Much of the drill steel produced in America is manufactured into hollow rods. After all forging has been finished the entire bar should be thoroughly annealed and heat treated before the point is hardened and tempered, at least where the drill has heavy duty, such as working in deep holes and hard rock. A large number of tools of like character and doing work requiring similar properties are now being made of alloy steels; for instance a steel with a carbon content of 0.75 to 0.85 per cent., manganese 0.25 to 0.35, phosphorus under 0.020, sulfur under 0.030 and vanadium 0.18 to 0.23 has proved very satisfactory for chisels. A steel of this type properly manufactured will be far superior to the ordinary carbon steels, while at the same time is one whose price range should not prove prohibitive. Much of the cutting efficiency of a drill depends on proper heat treatment. This vanadium steel has a far greater safe hardening and forging range than ordinary carbon steels, making it more nearly foolproof. It will harden nicely at 1400" I?. but will also harden well and satisfactorily at 1550" F. retaining its quality of hardness and toughness in either case.

ALTHOUGH flotation of coal is considered relatively new in the United States by coal-preparation engineers, actually it has been practiced to some extent for the past 30 years, It is practiced much more widely in Europe than in the United States. Commercial plants are operating in nearly all major coal-producing countries of the world. A froth flotation plant has been operating since 1930 at the Champion No, 1 preparation plant of the Pittsburgh Coal Co. Unfortunately the term flotation is widely used in the United States by coal-preparation engineers to designate dense medium processes of coal cleaning. As used here, flotation means those processes for cleaning fine sizes of coal in which the coal is collected in a froth or matte at or near the surface of a pulp. The refuse particles remain in the pulp. Two distinct types of flotation are practiced: froth flotation and agglomeration. FORMS OF FLOTATION The theory of the principles of flotation and of the physicochemical foundations surrounding this process has become a complex and scientific field and coal-preparation engineers contemplating use of flotation processes would do well to study the works of Gaudin, 2, 5 Taggart, 3 Zimmerman, 4 Wark, 6 Ralston, 7 Petersen. 8 Bulk Oil Flotation.-In this process the separation of mineral from gangue is accomplished by virtue of the fact that minerals of metallic lustre, as sulphides, or hydrocarbons, as coal and graphite, are wetted preferentially by oil in the presence of water and consequently pass into the interface between oil and water; while gangue or rock is wetted by water and remains in the medium. Beginning in 1860 with Haynes and later between 1897 and 1907, at least 25 patents were granted for bulk oil flotation. Large quantities of oil are required, generally 3 to 25 per cent by weight of feed, and recovery of such oil is a major problem. The Elmore process 3 (1901 and 1902) is an example of a bulk oil process, The Trent process (1902-25) has been used for the cleaning of coal on a commercial scale, According to E. W, Davidson 9 there were five such plants operating in the United States by 1925. They have since been abandoned.

It is generally recognized that fluid is lost from rotary drilling muds to permeable strata during normal drilling operations;1,2-3 but that this fluid is the filtrate from the mud, rather than the mud itself, has been shown by various workers.1,4,5 The presence of this filtrate in oil-bearing or gas-bearing strata is undesirable and harmful. The decreased permeability of the stratum to oil effected by the presence of water has been pointed out by several investigators,6,7 and since, in the production of the reservoir fluid, the greatest pressure drop occurs immediately adjacent to the borehole, it follows that infiltered water is particularly objectionable in this region. Again, this filtrate tends to make electrical logs less reliable, since oil in the proximity of the borehole is probably flushed out to an appreciable extent by the water.8 Observation of side wall cores may be misleading for the same reason. Drill-stem tests in low-pressure areas may be of doubtful value where no oil is recovered, unless sufficient time is allowed for production of water lost from the mud. The infiltered water may hinder drilling operations by softening shales and causing sloughing; the ['tight hole" occasioned by excessive deposition of filter cake in the hole is a common occurrence. The filter cake remaining on the face of the producing formation may itself sometimes be detrimental to production.9 In view of these implications of the importance of filtration of mud, an investigation was undertaken to determine the factors involved in the infiltration process, and to correlate these in such a manner that the values obtained in routine filter tests employing a conventional filter of the "wall-building tester" type,10 together with data on size of hole, drill pipe, and rate of mud circulation, could be used to estimate water loss and distance of penetration of the filtrate into strata. Quantitative relations of filter-cake permeability, filtrate viscosity, and rate of filtration have been developed for filtration in the simple laboratory filter.4a,11,12,13 It is obvious, however, that the conditions

Gordon Parr (University of Alberta) —While we appreciate the difficulties involved in any investigation of this system, and we wish to congratulate the authors on their comprehensive efforts, there are several aspects of their paper that are not clear to us. 1) If the 6 phase is, in fact, isomorphous with Ti3Sn, it should not be designated Ti,Al. An 4B structure cannot be isomorphous with an ordered structure of the DO type. Anderko et al.' suggested that the structure be called Ti3A1, and we believe this to be a more reasonable designation. The confusion is compounded when the authors designate the phase Ti3Al—yet the composition limits of this phase (according to their diagram) are approximately Ti,A1 and Ti,Al. Further, while Pietro-kowsky is said to have pointed out that the structure of the 6 phase is isomorphous with Ti3Sn, we understand that this was only a suggestion that was not confirmed. Margolin and Ence do not appear to have presented any evidence to support the suggested isomorphism. 2) In referring to the precipitation observed microscopically during the initial breakdown of high A1 a during quenching, the authors state that "such precipitation is not likely to be detected by Debye-Scherrer techniques". We suspect that if the precipitate was visible by optical microscopy, it must have at least one dimension of the order of 1 or greater, and would therefore be readily detected by diffraction techniques. 3) The authors state: "The basis for this suggestion (that 6 forms peritectically P + L—6) is the observation that the ,'3 + 6 and 6 phase fields were

Measurements of the latent heat of transformation from a to 0 titanium were made using a pulse-heating technique. Rapid heating was accomplished electrically by discharging a low-inductance capci-tor hank through a thin-strip specimen. Both high-purity titanium and titanium containing 2700 ppm of 0 were studied. An electrical-resistivity technique and a plot of energy input us temperature rise were used to monitor the phase change. It was concluded that: 1) the latent heat of transformation is 800 i 48 cal per mole; 2) phase change occurred in less than 200 sec; and 3) the percentage phase change that occurs is linearly a function of the energy available for phase change. In addition, this experiment provides a simple and inexpensive method for determining specific heat of electrical conductors over large temperature ranges. The chief advantages of this technique over past pulse-heating experiments are: 1) static measurements of capacitor-bank voltage capacitance and specimen resistance can be made quickly and accurately to determine the energy supplied to the specimen; 2) the specimen is heated so rapidly (10 µ sec) that there is no appreciable heat loss during the heating. THE purpose of this paper is to illustrate the use of the capacitor bank as a tool for basic experimental investigations and to determine the rapid phase-change kinetics of titanium. The capacitor provides a number of unique properties: 1) rapid heating rates in the order of l09oC per sec can be obtained; heating rates as slow as l04oC per sec are available by merely adding a given amount of inductance to the circuit; 2) the energy input can be precisely determined and can be varied from several joules to millions of joules, depending on the bank capacitance and voltage; 3) the specimen can be heated uniformly through the thickness and length or non-uniformly, as desired; 4) the apparatus is simple and inexpensive and can be easily altered; 5) the form of the specimen can be wires, sheets, foils, rods, and cylinders; 6) there is great precision in the timing of events; 7) this technique may be readily used in conjunction with rapid cooling.

The new 4800-ton fine-grinding plant at the Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines property at Timmins, in the Porcupine district of northern Ontario, went into operation in November 1937, and represents the culmination of an experimental program. The plant is a moderately low rectangular building of hollow tile on a steel frame, large enough to house four 7 by 15-ft. ball mills, with a 12 by 27-ft. classifier beside each mill. At one end is space for the addition of another mill and classifier or a mill and classifier for the regrinding of table concentrates. This regrinding is now done in the old grinding department of the main mill building. Also within the new building are the four 6-in. sand pumps for lifting the product from the low-dis-charge ball mills up to the classifier feed launders and the containers and appurtenances of a complete dust-collecting system. Together with the usual overhead crane, these constitute the major units of equipment within the new plant. The location is at the lower end of the main mill buildings toward the old tailings pond, now so neatly leveled off and sodded to rival the very best of our own W.P.A. projects. Close by the new grinding plant is a large dome-shaped structure—the new fine-ore bin designed and built by Mr. Longmore and the Hollinger milling and engineering staffs. There are four separate automatically loaded inclined belt conveyors leading up from the bottom of the bin to the grinding plant. Each belt is equipped with a recording weightometer, in the grinding building. The whole structure and the machinery within it give the impression of permanence and a carefully integrated design with close attention to details, giving the operators every advantage for consistently good work. The many ideas and opinions behind this achievement were all ably organized and executed by the Hollinger milling and engineering staffs, and not a few were directly initiated by them. THE Hercules mine is located in the northeastern section of the Coeur d'Alene district, approximately 1 1/2 miles north of the town of Burke, Idaho. Surface indications of the ore deposit were first discovered in 1886, but regular mine production was not started until 1902 and was continuous until April 1925, when the known ore had been extracted. Incomplete records show that from 1912 until operations were suspended the mine produced 2 1/2 million tons of ore containing 9.4 pct lead and 7.7 oz of silver per ton, together with an estimated 2 pct zinc, 0.3 pct copper, and 20 pct iron. This operation was the first in. a series of mining enterprises culminating in October 1947 with the consolidation of Day Mines, Inc. In the same year it was decided to unwater the levels below the collar of the Hercules shaft in the hope of finding some indication of a recurrence of ore. The unwatering operation has been described in a. previous paper.' The initial exploration, following recapture of the workings, showed sufficient promise to warrant a detailed study of the mineralogy with modern techniques. The general geo1ogy of the Coeur d'Alene district, including a detailed description of the rock types encountered, has been comprehensively treated by Ransome and Calkins' in their classic paper, and only local background description, therefore, is felt to be appropriate here. The Hercules deposit transects a portion of the trough of a broad south-trending synclinorium which has been greatly complicated by faulting. More locally, it lies within a block of ground bounded on the east; by the O'Neil Gulch fault, a steep north-south overthrust of considerable magnitude, and on the west by a monzonite stock, the outcrop of which is 1/2 mile or more wide and 5 miles long. The country rock is composed of thin to medium-bedded argillites and argillaceous quartz-ites of the Prichard and Burke formations, the oldest members of the Pre-cambrian Belt Series of sediments in the area, believed to be of Algonkian age. The contact between them is a conformable gradation. The argillite is colored gray to tannish-gray and is fine-grained, compact, and generally massive in structure. Under the microscope the unaltered argillite is seen to be composed principally of anhedral quartz and a few feldspar grains which were at one time presumably partly rounded sand grains, but as a result of recrystallization and cementation by silica, the interstices are now almost obliterated and quartz grains show crenulate boundaries. The sizes of these crystals vary from 0.5 mm down to 0.1 mm in greatest dimension. In all specimens sericite comprises 10 to 20 pct of the rock and is present abundantly between most of the grains as flakes or shreds which vary considerably in size. Sometimes they form a fine felt-like mat or aggregate, and sometimes flakes are seen which appear to be good muscovite. In some specimens, separated rhombic-shaped carbonate grains are abundant, and in some instances these have been changed to sericite. Mining operations to date have explored the Hercules vein to a maximum vertical depth of 3600 ft below its outcrop, and along a maximum strike-length of 3600 ft on certain of the lower mine levels. The main orebody is irregular in outline, extending over a variable strike-length of 400 to 1500 ft; and it is intersected by a strong transverse fault that has been traced from the surface to the bottom level. This has been named the Hercules fault, and apart from the vein itself, it is the most prominent structural feature in the mine. There is good evidence that it existed prior to the introduction of ore solutions and may have influenced ore deposition, but it was also the locus of important post-ore displacement and shows a progressive right-handed horizontal component reaching 200 ft on the deeper levels. Its vertical component is not definitely known but may be considerably greater. The fault strikes 20° N to 50° E and dips westerly at angles of 70" to 45", flattening in dip where it crosses the original orebody from east to west between 1000 and 1600 ft below the surface. At about 3000 ft in depth the Hercules fault is joined by a vertical fault of similar strike, and the major post-ore dis-placement below their junction is taken up along this vertical branch of the structure, now called the Mercury fault. Recent work has been concentrated in this vicinity. Another structural feature of special geologic interest, though of little economic importance, is the occurrence of a porphyritic dike in this area. This lies a short distance above the Hercules fault, essentially parallel to it, and is 5 to 15 ft in thickness. It appears at first glance to cut the mineralization, suggesting push-apart relationship, but small stringers of the vein minerals have been observed to penetrate the dike for a matter of inches at several points. The dike is thought to be related to the monzonite intrusion. A vertical longitudinal projection of the mine is shown in Fig. 1, which illustrates most of the features discussed above. The Hercules vein was deposited along the course of a strong, persistent shear zone that now appears as a braided network of gouge seams running through more or less crushed and shattered country rock. It strikes 70° N to 80° W and dips southerly at an average of 75". Barren parts of the structure vary in width from less than 1 ft to more than 15 ft. The width of mineralized segments may be double that. Although the evidence is not conclusive, pre-mineral, normal movement along the zone may be 1000 or 1500 ft. The horizontal component is unknown. There's a right way and a wrong way to store diesel electric systems and similar equipment for generating on-site power, according to James Frankow, service manager for Allis-Chalmers Corp's Engine Division. In any event, the less storage the better. Many generating sets are stored before installation, especially when new construction is underway. Improper storage, or mothballing, can create initial reliability problems. Therefore; arrange for inside storage with no drastic extremes in temperature or humidity. If engines and alternators are stored in areas other than inside a dirt-free and temperature-controlled building, the unit or engine should be completely covered and protected against the environment. Before covering it with a canvas or with plastic, the unit should first be sealed at the following critical engine openings:

Through a unique Department of Commerce program a group of US mining equipment manufacturers spent 18 fruitful days in the, Far East, meeting with government and industry leaders in Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philip¬pines. The US Mining and Exploration Equipment Semi¬nar Mission, held April 3-20, 1979, was sponsored by the Special Activities Group of the Commerce Department's Office of International Marketing. The program included a series of technical overview papers presented by the manufacturers, aimed at promoting the sale of US products and services throughout the world.

A dynamic regional coal development model is constructed for the Eastern Powder River Basin of Wyoming. Using this model, alternative development schedules from a recent environmental impact statement submitted to the Department of the Interior are simulated (Ref. 1). These alternatives include different mixes of export capacity, different coal conversion techniques within the region, as well as various levels of coal production. Exportation of 70 to 80 percent of an ultimate coal production of 180 million tons (163.3 x l09 kg) per year and the careful phasing of additional public services with population growth effectively reduce the social and environmental impacts of coal development. The alternative involving the addition of 43,000 megawatts of electrical generation capacity has very significant adverse social and environmental impacts on the region.

The rapid worldwide increase in labor costs, prices of goods and services, and the rising tide of economic nationalism do not bode well for the future of mineral exploration and the mining industry. The increasing complexity and difficulty involved in finding economic mineral deposits makes these trends particularly significant. A comparative cost analysis of domestic and foreign exploration projects which developed into mines during the period 1960-74 may be useful in indicating the general nature of exploration expenditures as these trends continue. This analysis is based on a survey of 18 US and Canadian mining companies. Due to the inexact nature of exploration expenditure data, plus the fact that no two mining companies follow the same system of cost allocation, the results of the survey must be considered quite general in character.

The income of the Institute is derived from dues, subscriptions to MINING AND METALLURGY sale of publications. These sources are fortunately supplemented by the interest from invested funds now amounting to over $500,000, a considerable portion constituting endowments for especial purposes. Aside from the medal funds the principal endowments are the James Douglas Fund for support of the Library, the Rocky Mountain Fund and the Seeley W. Mudd Memorial Fund. The income from the two last named is available for the support of research and a variety of other purposes. It is allocated by the Board of Directors upon recommendation of standing. committees in each case. An active effort is being made to increase the endowments of the Institute, it being felt that unusual opportunities exist for research and public and professional service through the organization and at a minimum of expense. The austenite to martensite solid state phase transformation in the 300 series austenitic stainless steels was studied over the temperature range of 788° to -423°F. The primary variables controlling this transformation are temperature, plastic strain, and chernical composition. Consequently, temperature effects were studied by measurements at 78", -100°, -320°, ad -423°F; plastic strain was controlled by cold-rolling the alloys varying amounts between 40 and 80 pet; and chemical compositions were varied by using 301, 302, 304 ELC, and 310 stainless steel alloys which exhibit varying degrees of austenite stability. The martensite contents of various alloys were correlated with several mechanical properties including yield and ultimate tensile strength, elongation, and notched tensile strength (Kt = 6.3). The yield and tensite strengths generally increased with increasing martensite content, but ) no correlation was observed between elongation and martensite content. The notched/un-notched ratio (Kt = 6.3) at -423°F exhibited a maximun at about 65 pct martensite. Attempts to correlate austenite stability (as measured by the Ms temperature) with both martensite content, and incremental increases in martensite content resulting from tensile testing were generally unsuccessful because the variable of cold Work could not be separated. As a result, only a general correlation of these variables was obtained. A (111) pole figure of austenite in a cold-rolled 301 stainless steel mas prepared an attempt to further investigate directionality as exhibited by mechan- ical properties. Yield strength was correlated with this pole figure, but ultimate and notched tensile strengths were not. 1 HE literature contains a wide variety of references pertaining to the austenite to martensite solid state phase transformation in austenitic stainless steel, see references 1 through 18. Discussions of the crystallography and kinetics of this transformation are given in references 2, 7, 8, 'and 11, while further discussions of austenite stability and hardening mechanisms are given in references 1, 3, and 10. Two important processing variables involved in this reaction are the degree of cold work and the temperature at which cold work is performed, and the nature of these effects are outlined in references 4 and 12, and 15 and 16 respectively. The latter two references deal primarily with cold rolling conducted at subzero temperatures. The effect of chemical composition on the austenite to martensite reaction was treated in detail by Eichelman and Hull, and they determined an equation for the M, temperature of this type of steel which included the effects of nickel, chromium, carbon, nitrogen, silicon, and manganese.5 Previous studies have shown that austenitic stainless steels of AISI types 301, 302, 304ELC, 310, and 301-N exhibit mechanical properties between 78" and -423"~ that are microstructure dependent, and the dependence of this microstructure on chemistry, temperature, tensile stress, and prior deformation is in general accord with previous investigations which have measured the effects of each of these variables on structure, or more specifically, the austenite-to-martensite transformation.lg The behavior of fully stable alloys, such as ATST type 310, at cryogenic temperatures is

Leaching in place at Cananea began in the 1920's on a limited scale. The first plants were small wooden boxes located underground in the Capote and Oversight mines, and output was low. Scrap iron was used as precipitant. Later several other small plants were started up. Leaching was limited entirely to underground areas, and production remained low. The Veta precipitating plant, the first on a larger scale, was put into operation in the late 1920's. After a period of intermittent service it was rebuilt in 1946 and has since been running continuously.

The object of this paper is to record and interpret field and laboratory observations made by the writers during five years of study of the barite deposits of North Carolina. Deposits of barite are known to occur in three localities in North Carolina (Fig. 1) two of which—the Hot Springs and Kings Mountain —contain material of economic value. The Hot Springs area begins near Bluff, some 6 miles south of Hot Springs, and continues northeast by Stackhouse; a total length of 7 miles. The Kings Mountain deposits lie along a belt that extends from the north end of Crowders Mountain in a southwestward direction, along the east side of this and Kings Mountain, to Kings Creek, South Carolina. The third locality is 3½ miles southeast of Hillsboro, Orange County, a short distance west of the highway leading from Hillsboro to Chapel Hill. It is not known when barite was first discovered in North Carolina, but production from the Hot Springs area began some 50 years ago. The state has never produced large quantities of barite—usually there have been less than three producers—and definite figures are not available, but reasonably reliable estimates indicate a total production of 300,000 tons. The object of this paper is to record and interpret field and laboratory observations made by the writers during five years of study of the barite deposits of North Carolina. Deposits of barite are known to occur in three localities in North Carolina (Fig. 1) two of which—the Hot Springs and Kings Mountain —contain material of economic value. The Hot Springs area begins near Bluff, some 6 miles south of Hot Springs, and continues northeast by Stackhouse; a total length of 7 miles. The Kings Mountain deposits lie along a belt that extends from the north end of Crowders Mountain in a southwestward direction, along the east side of this and Kings Mountain, to Kings Creek, South Carolina. The third locality is 3½ miles southeast of Hillsboro, Orange County, a short distance west of the highway leading from Hillsboro to Chapel Hill. It is not known when barite was first discovered in North Carolina, but production from the Hot Springs area began some 50 years ago. The state has never produced large quantities of barite—usually there have been less than three producers—and definite figures are not available, but reasonably reliable estimates indicate a total production of 300,000 tons. This section will outline procedural, statistical, and model applications developed for specific problem solving and for specific applications in beneficiation processes. Iron Ore Processing Introduction of taconite as a basic raw material in the iron ore industry took place with application of high order technical resources for process development and engineering. This investment of resources encouraged computer utilization to maximize efficient use of capital. From this recognition, process control computers have been installed for operations use in the major taconite plants of the iron range. One of these installations, the Minntac Division of U. S. Steel at Mountain Iron, Minnesota, is described in the paper by Chase in these proceedings. Other computer techniques used in taconite processing are outlined by Tuttle, Ahlquist and Carlson, representing Erie Mining. In this volume Tuttle, et al. describe statistical methods for development of information in taconite beneficiation. Statistical methods used in iron ore processing are described by Volin in treating flotation data as outlined in prior proceedings of the symposia and in other publications. 1,2,3 Industrial Minerals The use of linear programming for feed blending at the Carlsbad operation of International Minerals and Chemicals was outlined by Nunnekoven in 1963.4 Subsequent application of this procedure at the Kingston phosphate operation in Florida was described by Loper. Continued development led to installation of an on-line computer in the Kingston plant which reached operational status in 1967.6,7,8 Application of an on-line computer to industrial mineral production accomplished at Kingston is regarded as a milestone in computer use development. Following this achievement, the Cominco potash beneficiation plant near Saskastoon in Canada was automated by installation of an on- line computer programmed to carry out direct digital control functions to effectively operate the plant by process computer.
