The phase diagram of the Ta-Zr system is presented with a discussion of the methods used in its determination. The solidus contains a minimum at 1820°C near 25 wt pet Ta. A complete solid solution exists at elevated temperatures between tantalum and ß zirconium. This solid solution decomposes monotectoidally at 800°C and 12 wt pet Ta. The maximum solubility of tantalum in a zirconium is slightly less than 2 wt pet, and decreases with decreasing temperature. The solubility of zirconium in tantalum is 5 wt pet at the monotectoid temperature and about 2 wt pet at room temperature. THIS investigation was part of a program of research on refractory metal alloy systems having potential application in nuclear reactor technology. Preliminary prop-ess has been reported in the Ames Laboratory annual research reports.l Most of the previously reported work on the Ta-Zr alloy system consisted of partial phase diagram investigations and the determination of the mechanical properties of the zirconium-rich alloys. Anderson eta1.2 studied alloys containing up to 30 wt pet Ta as part of an investigation of several zirconium alloy systems. These investigators also determined some of the mechanical properties of the alloys at room temperature and 650°C. In a discussion of Anderson's work, Pfei13 suggested that the bright phase in the microstructures of the intermediate alloys is a tantalum-rich solid solution or an intermediate phase in a matrix of ß zirconium solid solution. MR. NEILSON was born Aug. 12, 1842, at Philadelphia, Pa., where he died Dec. 30, 1906. His business career began with his graduation, in the class of 1862, from the Polytechnic College of the State of Pennsylvania. For a short time after graduation he was instructor in mathematics at the college, and then became associated with Messrs. Booth & Garrett, chemists, of his native city: In 1867 he was sent to the Adirondack mountains to care for mining interests of the late Jay Cooke, and spent about three years there, operating the forges at Elizabethtown, Essex county, N. Y. He also prepared an interesting monograph on Catalan forges and their operations. In 1868 he published a chart showing the material progress of the United States, and the cost of certain staple products during a series of years, which is believed to be the first of its kind issued in this country. In 1870 he made a trip to the Pacific Coast, prior to entering the service of the Pennsylvania Steel Company. In 1871, when the Logan Iron & Steel Co., of Burnham, Pa., failed, Mr. Neilson was appointed receiver, re-organized the company, became' its General Manager, and spent more than four years in this work. In the meantime, he became interested in the Freedom forge of the same place, and, with Mr. Wm. Burnham and Mr. Milton Brosius, laid the foundations for what is now the Standard Steel Works. From Jan. 1, 1877, to April 1, 1890, he was General Manager of these works, and closely associated with the Baldwin Locomotive Works. In 1878 he was in charge of the first consignment of Baldwin locomotives to Europe, which, with a picked crew of men from Baldwin's, he took to Eydtkennen, Russia, and placed in service. Several of the current concepts of brittle fracture involve consideration of the existence of defects or flaws. Griffith 1 observed that the tensile strength of brittle materials was several orders of magnitude less than might be expected from the calculated strength of the molecular bonds. He was able to show that the stress concentration at the tip of an elliptical crack is sufficient to raise the local stress level many fold. He therefore proposed that real materials do contain such stress risers in the form of minute cracks and that this accounts for the rather large difference between theoretical and actual strengths of brittle materials. The degree of stress magnification depends to a great extent upon the orientation of the crack with respect to the general stress system, and to the general geometry of the crack.

No method of roof control yet devised has proven to be universally acceptable for the wide range of strata conditions experienced in U. S. coal mines. However, a relatively new innovation, the roof truss, has proven itself capable of preventing roof failures which both conventional and resin bolting could not. Presently, the economics of roof trusses are not favorable when compared to bolting due primarily to drilling and installation procedures, but this is expected to change with improved truss and equipment designs. To realize the full potential of this new method of roof control, design criteria are needed which can optimize the effect of the truss for varying strata conditions. A review of the literature reveals that some work has been conducted on the roof truss. Cambrell and Haynes1 (1970) showed that the roof truss is superior to angled roofbolts installed through a header. Sheorey, Verma, and Singh2 (1973) used statics to prove that the optimum angle of inclination should be greater than 45°. However, to date, no systematic attempt has been made to establish design criteria. In this paper, the problem was approached in three ways. First, model studies were performed to determine general trends of truss support as a function of a number of variables. This provided a better understanding of the support mechanism involved. Secondly, beam theory was employed to calculate the actual support capacity of a truss, realizing the many simplifications, assumptions, and shortcomings of this approach to such a complicated problem. Last, field testing will be utilized to test the hypotheses previously developed and provide hard data to further synthesize roof truss design criteria. Field testing has recently commenced and should be complete before mid 1977.

THE Consolidated Mining and Smelting CO. of Canada Ltd. has operated a lead smelter at Trail, B. C., for many years. In order to take advantage of metallurgical advances, as well as to improve materials handling methods, this company, commonly known as "Cominco," commenced planning a program of smelter revision and modernization some years ago. The first stage of this program involved the design and construction of a new blast furnace gas cleaning system. The selection of equipment, the design of facilities, and preliminary operating details of this system will be dealt with in this paper. The essential problem was to clean and collect 100 tons of dust daily from 153,000 cfm* (12,225 lb per min) of lead blast furnace gas which varied in temperature from 350º to 1100°F. Because it was desired to collect the dust dry, either a Cottrell or a baghouse cleaning plant was to be selected. Comin-co's many years of experience with both systems provided a background for choosing the most satisfactory installation. All information pertinent to the two methods of dust recovery was carefully investigated, and it was decided to replace the existing equipment with a baghouse. Very briefly, the reasons for this decision were as follows: 1—A baghouse installation would be practical because the SO2 content of the gas was low and corrosion would not be a problem if the baghouse operating temperatures were held sufficiently above the dew point. 2—Variations in the physical characteristics of fume and dust, which are inherent in this blast furnace operation, should not substantially affect the operating efficiency of a baghouse. 3—For the same capital cost, metal losses (stack and water losses) would be appreciably less in a baghouse. 4—A baghouse would be easier to operate, and would not require the use of highly skilled labor. 5—Operating and maintenance costs of a bag-house would be lower. 6—The only available space for reconstruction was relatively small, and not suited to a Cottrell installation. Once the baghouse system was decided upon, detailed design of the installation was begun. Baghouse Design Gas Cooling: Before the required capacity of the baghouse could be determined, the method of cooling the gas to the temperature necessary for bag-house operation had to be chosen. The problem confronting the design engineers was how best to cool 153,000 cfm of gas from a temperature ranging from 350°F to brief peaks of 1100°F, down to 210°F, the maximum safe baghouse inlet temperature. A survey of existing blast furnace gas temperatures in the outlet flue showed that the normal range was as given in Table I. The obvious choices of cooling method were: 1— cool completely by the addition of tempering air; 2—utilize a heat exchanger; 3—cool by radiation; and 4—cool with water spray in conjunction with the admission of tempering air. The advantages and disadvantages of the various cooling methods were: Air Addition: To cool completely by the admission of tempering air involved tremendous volumes, Fig. 1. For example, to cool 1 lb of blast furnace gas at 450°F requires 1.84 lb of air at 80°F or 1.60 lb at 60°F. As it is necessary to design for peak conditions, it can readily be seen that volumes of tempering air in the order of 1,500,000 cfm would have to be handled. Using the normal design figure of 2.5 cu ft per sq ft of bag area, a baghouse installation comprising some 600,000 sq ft of filter cloth would be necessary. Such design requirements would be prohibitive, not only from a standpoint of capital expenditure, but also because of space limitations. Heat Exchanger: The utilization of a heat exchanger was given serious consideration. A horizontal tube unit using air as the medium to cool the required volume of blast furnace gas from 400" to 250°F was investigated. Cooling above 400°F would be done by water spray, and below 250°F by admission of tempering air. The estimated capital cost of such a unit was found to be prohibitive. From an operating standpoint, there was considerable doubt as to whether the soot blowing equipment provided would effectively keep the dust from building up on the tube surface. The performance of heat exchangers operating on dusty gas in other company operations had not been too favorable. Radiation Cooling: Although somewhat cumbersome, gas cooling by radiation from 'trombone' tubes or other similar equipment (cyclones) is employed in many metallurgical operations. Such an installation was also considered. However, calculations showed that an installation much larger than the space available would be required to handle the gas volume involved. For example, to cool 153,000 cfm of blast furnace gas from, say, 600' to 250°F (i.e., remove in the order of 58,500,000 Btu per hr with heat transfer rates varying from 1.1 Btu per sq ft per hr per OF for the higher temperature ranges to 0.88 Btu per sq ft per hr per OF for the lower ranges) would need a cooling area of some 175,000 sq ft.

WET processes for the extraction of copper from its ores have of late attracted much attention, especially in Europe, where the use of oupriferous iron-pyrites as a' source of sulphur prevails. These processes present an additional interest, when, as is often the case, the copper-ore's to be treated contain one or both of the precious metals, since the complete separation of these from copper, either in the dry or the moist way, is, as is well known, one of the difficult problems of metallurgy. The principal wet processes hitherto in use for the extraction of copper from its ores, may be included under three classes : I. Those in which the copper in snlphuretted ores is rendered soluble in water by calcining them, after a preliminary roasting which removes the greater part of their sulphur, with a portion of common salt, by which the copper is converted into a chloride (Long-maid and Henderson), or with sulphate of soda, by which sulphate of copper is formed (Monnier). Allied to these is the method by which a portion of the copper is got as soluble sulphate by roasting without addition, a process which is sometimes modified and rendered more complete by re-roasting the lixiviated residues with the addition of a portion of raw sulphuretted ore (Bankart). II. Those methods in which free chlorhydric or sulphuric acid is used to dissolve the copper- from oxidized or roasted ores. These, while simple and efficient, are too costly, except in certain localities where chlorhydric acid is a waste product. Related to them is the plan which consists in exposing the oxidized and moistened ores to the slow action of sulphurous acid mixed with air, by which a soluble sulphate of copper is formed. It has been proposed to decompose the solutions of sulphate or chloride of copper by sulphuretted hydrogen, thus separating the copper as sulphide, and using the liberated acid to dissolve fresh portions of oxidized copper. It is, however, the almost universal practice to throw down the copper from its solutions, however obtained, in the metallic state by the use of iron, either scrap-iron or iron-sponge; although in some instances

A new method for determining rock drillability in diamond drilling is discussed; the method takes into consideration both penetration rate and bit wear. The method is based on drilling a rock specimen under controlled laboratory conditions using a model bit. The technique used for determining the experimental variables is extremely simple, quick, and reliable. Drillability is then determined by the mathematics of drilling. In considering the different factors that affect diamond drilling performance, the nature of the rock to be drilled is of outmost importance since it affects significantly the drilling costs and such other variables as bit type and design, drilling thrust, and bit rotary speed. Many attempts have been made to study this effect by correlating actual drilling performances either to certain physical properties of the rock being drilled1-? or to test drilling data obtained under laboratory conditions.7-13 These attempts were aimed at providing a reliable method of predicting by simple means the expected rock behavior in actual drilling, thus giving the engineer a tool to use in estimating drilling performances and costs in different types of rock. The purpose of this paper is to describe such a method by which rock drillability (a term used in the technical literature to describe rock behavior in drilling) could be determined in diamond drilling. It is believed that the proposed simple and reliable method will cover the need of the mining industry for a workable method of measuring the drillability of rocks. It should be emphasized, however, that since drill-ability depends on the physical properties of rock and each drilling process (diamond, percussive, rotary) is affected by different or partly different rock properties,14-l6 the proposed method of determining rock drillability cannot be extended to the other drilling processes. The results presented in this paper form part of an extensive three-year research program carried out by the author in the laboratories of the Greek Institute of Geology and Subsurface Research. During this period the effects of the physical properties of rocks and of such operational variables as drilling thrust and bit rotary speed in diamond drilling were investigated in detail. DRILLABILITY CONCEPT The literature is not devoid of drillability studies. While there are a number of investigators1,3,5-7,9-0,12-13,17 who have attempted to establish by direct methods (i.e., drilling tests under laboratory conditions) or indirect (i.e., through a physical property of rock) an index from which the drilling performance in a given rock may be estimated, very few6-7,9,12, of the proposed methods seem to be of much practical value to the diamond drilling engineer and none to date has been universally accepted. Commenting on the proposed methods for assessing rock drillability, Fish14 remarks that "for a measure of drillability to be accepted it is essential that penetration rate at a given thrust and bit life are elucidated as otherwise the method is of little value." This statement should be examined in more detail by making use of the penetration rate-drilling time diagram obtained in drilling a rock under constant operational conditions. Furthermore, the merits of using this diagram to describe rock drillability will be pointed out. At the same time reference will be made to this diagram when discussing some previously proposed methods. Fig. 1 illustrates such a diagram for three rocks,A, B, and C, which have been diamond drilled under identical conditions. It is assumed here that rocks A and B have the same initial penetration rate, i.e., VOA = Vog, but since rock B is more abrasive than A, rapid bit wear occurs and as a result the fall of its penetration rate with respect to time is more vigorous than in rock A. This is shown graphically by a steeper V = f(t) (0 curve in this rock than in rock A. Rock C has a lower initial penetration rate, due to higher strength properties16 but since it is not very abrasive, only a slight fall of its penetration rate occurs during drilling (in this category are some limestone and marbles with compressive strength above 1000 kg per sq cm). It follows from the foregoing considerations that the characteristic for each rock curve (I) is a function of (i), the penetration rate of the rock Vo recorded at the instant of commencing drilling, which determines the starting point of the curve (1) on the y-axis and (ii), the abrasive rock properties which determine the rate of fall of Vo with respect to time. Thus, curve (I) provides an actual picture of the rock behavior in drilling for given operational conditions, and it can be used with complete satisfaction to assess rock drillability. A great deal of speculation, as well as actual experiment, has been devoted to ascertaining the changes in the materials (luring their descent in an iron blast-furnace, affecting (1) the chemical constitution, (2) the mechanical condition, and (3) the arrangement of the materials. With a view to throw some light upon the third question, we constructed a model and tried experiments which are here described. Our model is a vertical section of a furnace, with the lines of the Edgar Thomson furnace D of 1885 for the use of which we arc indebted to Mr. Gayley. The model is 40 inches high, and made to scale (1/2 inch equals 1 foot), and the horizontal section of the space through which the charge falls at any point in the descent is 11/2 in. x d, d being the diameter of the furnace at that place. Discussion of the paper of J. PARSE CHANNING, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 99, March, 1915, pp. 529 to 538. FRED H. RINDGE, JR., * New York, N. Y.-It is interesting to note that although this movement was started only seven years ago at Yale, it has spread in that brief time to 200 colleges and technical schools, anti thousands of men are interested in it. There are 3,000 graduates who became acquainted with the movement in college days anti are now promoting the industrial betterment idea all over the country. Some of these men are employed entirely in this work, and the number of such workers is constantly increasing. We feel we are really doing a very fundamental thing in getting so many coming engineers and prospective employers of labor to interest themselves in these things which we have been discussing this morning; these things which are so vital to efficiency and success in any line of business or engineering to-clay. Of course the institutions located in our large industrial centers have the greatest opportunity for practical service. But I have just returned from one college, Pennsylvania State College, where 300 engineering students in three clays signed up as interested in this movement and as anxious to take active part in the work this summer. That is one of a number of colleges situated in towns where there are 110 industrial opportunities. Therefore, their field of service must be where they work

The Nivloc mine is 9 miles west of Silver Peak, Esmeralda County, Nevada. It has been operated by Desert Silver, Inc., since the summer of 1937. The cyanide mill treats 190 tons of silver-gold ore per day. In March of this year the main operations were about 2000 ft. west of the main shaft, which served as the downcast air passage for the mine. The mechanical blowers in use were sufficient to ventilate the west end at that time, but it was foreseen that as the mining area was extended ventilation would be an increasingly difficult problem, especially during the summer months. It was decided, therefore, to continue a raise from a point 100 ft. above the highest mining level (440-ft. level) to the surface; a distance of 443 ft. at approximately 65°. From this point 40 ft. of drifting would be necessary to connect with a shallow shaft on the surface. (Fig. I.) All the raise was serviced from the 440-ft. level; costs and progress obtained in the initial 100 ft. are included in the following pages. Choice of Raise A raise in this locality would have four objects: (I) to provide an ample supply of fresh air to the working places; (2) to explore the vein from the highest mining level to the surface; (3) to provide waste fill for stopes in the area, and possibly provide a transfer for waste from the surface; (4) to provide an emergency exit in the west end of the mine. Before the mining of an ore shoot in the eastern part of the mine, a similar raise had been driven for purposes of ventilation and exploration. This raise and subsequent mining showed the vein to be noncommercial for a distance of about 250 ft. below the surface. However, in the area under operation, old surface workings showed occasional values. Thus from a development standpoint the raise was an excellent prospect. The raise chosen was a three-compartment, stulled raise having two chutes and a manway. The manway inside timber measured 4 ft. 8 in. by 4 ft. 6 in.; it carried air and water pipes, a ladderway and a slide for a timber skip. The two chutes would be used for drawing off the muck and the cleaning of the bulkhead, as well as for ore and waste passes, which would be especially useful for lateral exploration from the raise. The fairly large cross section of the raise (6 by 15 ft.) would provide a large quantity of waste for backfilling, and more could be obtained from a glory hole on the surface. Time Schedule As speed in completing the raise was the main requisite, three shifts were considered, but two shifts were decided upon when it was found that three would necessitate considerably larger fans than those available for clearing the raise. A POWDER pattern for the (Cr, Mo, Co)R-phase annealed at 1200°C was reported in 1951.1 Through the courtesy of Prof. D. P. Shoemaker of Massachusetts Institute of Technology the authors became aware of inconsistencies of this pattern with that to be expected from the structure of the R-phase, as determined by Komura, Shoemaker, and Shoemaker.' In addition, Professor Shoemaker also noted that the powder pattern reported8 for the (Cr, Mo, Co)D-phase, annealed at 1300°C, agreed fairly well with that to be expected from the newly determined structure of the R-phase. In view of these findings, the previously reported powder patterns of the R-phase and of the D-phase were compared carefully. It was found that most lines in the two patterns (22 lines) were to a fair degree of accuracy related to each other by a single conversion ratio for the corresponding d spacings. The value of the conversion ratio was found to be 1.0058, so that the d spacings of the D-phase pattern previously reported were larger than the correspond- ing d spacings for the reported R-phase pattern by approximately that factor. The intensity relationships between corresponding lines in the two patterns were similar, as judged visually. The following exceptions were noted: Lines Nos. 2, 3, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24 and 25 of the D-phase pattern,:' all designated weak or very weak, were missing in the apparently somewhat fainter R-phase pattern used.' Lines 1, 2, 3, 5, 15 and 34 (all weak or very weak), reported for the R-phase, were missing in the D-phase pattern, Table I. In view of these observations it seemed probable that the two patterns differed from each other mainly by a slight change in lattice parameters (with c/a remaining approximately constant), and that the pattern previously reported for the R-phase contained some weak extraneous lines, most likely to be attributed to impurities. In order to check the foregoing assumption, two specimens of an alloy containing 43 pct by weight of cobalt, 41 pct molybdenum, and 16 pct chromium, which was within the composition range of stability of both the D-phase at 1300°C and of the R-phase at 1200°C, were homogenized at 1200 and 1300°C, respectively, and quenched. X-ray diffraction patterns of the powders of these two specimens, obtained with CrK radiation, were compared carefully with each other and with the D-phase pattern previously

Manganese has, until recently, been most highly esteemed as a good thing to keep out of steel. Its value in the process of mannfacture has been fully recognized, but after it has played its part in the crucible or the converter, then the less of it the better. It is true that the mission of this metal and its influence upon the character of steel has been a source of much controversy. Our own Holley, in one of his special reports on ferromanganese: I, states that ''it has been suspected by some, and believed by a few, while it is still denied by many, that manganese as an ingredient in steel has not only a body-giving and toughening influence, but a positive neutralizing influence upon any excess of hardening or cold-shortening substances, as phosphorus." In another paper on the same subject he states that " it should appear from such facts as we have that manganese toughens" the structural steels, "increases their soundness and prevents red-shortness." Notwithstanding these rather guarded assertions as to its value, the general belief, it will be found, is with Dr. Siemens, that manganese is " merely a cloak to hide impurities," and its presence in steel has been endured, not welcomed. The paragraphs quoted, regarding Mr. Hoover's appointment as chairman of the newly organized food board of the United States, are taken from the editorial page, of the New York Times for April 13: ?The country is fortunate in commanding the services of Herbert C. Hoover as Chairman of the newly established Food Board. This is n, problem of first importance. Few realize the extent to which American food stuffs will enter into the decision of the war, and it is doubtful if it has occurred to many minds as yet that we shall have to deny ourselves what we have regarded as necessaries in order to keep our European allies supplied. " Mr. Hoover is one of the leading mining engineers of the country. At the outbreak of the war he put his private affairs aside to become the head of the American Commission for Relief in Belgium. He has had an experience that perhaps no other man has ever had, covering the raising of money and the purchase and distribution of supplies on a large scale; He has been brought into close relations with the neutrals and the belligerents on both sides. By them all he is recognized is one of the best executives brought to the fore by the mar. Mr. Hoover is in a position now to place abilities and experience at the service of his country. He will come back with comparative data that will enable him to measure resources and deficiencies accurately. This appointment gives renewed assurance of our Government's grasp of the problems of war and its resolve to apply, business principles to their solution."

In central Colorado is a great belt of intrusive porphyry nearly 100 miles long (160 km.), extending from the Clear Creek district on the north to Aspen on the south, which includes many of the well known mining camps of the state. Near the southern end of this belt, at Leadville, the occurrence of these intrusives is most marked, resulting in intensive mineralization and the formation of a great variety of large orebodies. During the past 40 years, Leadville has been a steady producer of gold, silver, lead, zinc, manganese, iron, and bismuth, in the forms of sulfide, carbonate and oxide ores. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss pyrite alone, which, under present economic conditions, is valuable chiefly for its sulfur contents. The ore-bearing formation of the Leadville district consists of two beds of limestone separated by a layer of quartzite. The upper limeatone is carbonaceous, and is known locally as the blue limestone. It varies in thickness from 50 to 300 ft. (15 to 91 m.). The lower limestone is Silurian, known locally as white limestone, and is about the same thickness as the upper bed. Underneath the Silurian limestone is a layer of Cambrian quartzite from 100 to 250 ft. (30 to 76 m.) thick resting on Archean granite, which forms the limit of ore deposition. As a rule, there is a sheet of white porphyry above the upper, or blue limestone; a sheet of gray porphyry is associated with the blue limestone, either in or below it, but the porphyries are not so regular as the quartzites and limestones and are not always found in their expected positions. Throughout the district there is an elaborate system of faults and intrusive porphyry dikes, which have an important bearing on ore deposits. The writer has seen two or three orebodies which were not closely associated with either a fault or a porphyry dike, but if the minor fractures and water courses are considered as part of the fault system it is safe to say that all orebodies are directly traceable to one or both of these causes. The distribution of pyrite in the Leadville district is quite general; but, eliminating the smaller bodies and those containing prohibitive quantities of zinc or lead, and considering only the larger deposits commercially valuable for their sulfur, we find the chief pyritic ore-bodies extending in a zone approximately 6000 ft. (1828 m.) long and several hundred feet wide, from the Yak and Moyer, on the south; through the Louisville, Greenback, Mahala, Adams, and Wolftone, on Carbonate Hill; across Yankee Hill, and into the Quadrilateral, Denver City, and Tip Top, on Fryer Hill.

The subject of the supply and the quality of the iron-ore and coke of this State has suffered exaggeration and misrepresentation in both directions. Unsophisticated persons have made extraordinary reports of quality and richness, which could not be supported by facts; while, on the other hand, experts have selected inferior samples, and upon the average of these, which was not by any means the average known to our practice, have based comparisons favorable to other States. Our furnace-records give much better testimony as to the run of our ores, the calorific duty of our coke, and the burden and blast which it will bear. Some of them show poorer ore-mixtures than others; but it is safe to say that the Birmingham furnaces produce from 40 to 60 per cent.. of iron from a mixture of equal parts of the leanest and the richest ores, as classified in large quantities. And certain performances on record here, while they do not represent the regular or average practice, ma: be fairly urged as proof of excellence of raw material, since they would otherwise have been impossible, even as exceptional achievements. Thus oue of our furnaces has made iron with 2500 pounds of coke to the ton of 2300 pounds (Mr. Stratton, 1888); another, with a ton of coke to the ton of iron (Mr. Gordon, 1888); another, with 1.27 ton of coke to the ton (2300 pounds) of iron, the product in the last case being from

§ 22. THe results published in Professor Howe's paper10 of our determinations on the Ac3 and Ar3 points for a series of commercial carbon steels " containing manganese in varying proportion, represent the average temperatures found by taking several (4 or 5) heating and cooling curves. The accompanying curves, Figs. 6 and 7, are, for each steel, the first heating and cooling curves as obtained by the inverse-rate method of Osmond, using a cylindrical chronograph sensitive to 0.1 sec. for recording time. Simultaneous observations were also taken by the differential method with a platinum neutral and plotted by Rosenhain's derived differential method and gave substantially the same results, the curves having sensibly the same contours in both cases.12 The observations were taken in vacuo on cylinders 5 by 1 in. in length bored to center with a 1/8-in. hole to receive porcelain insulated thermo-couple, and inclosed in an out- and in-glazed Berlin porcelain tube heated electrically by platinum foil wound on the tube. The vacuum was usually better than 0.1 mm. The heating and cooling of the furnace was automatically controlled by a salt-water rheostat with shaped electrodes, giving a uniform rate of heating and cooling.

THE Nivloc mine is 9 miles west of Silver Peak, Esmeralda County, Nevada. It has been operated by Desert Silver, Inc., since the summer of 1937. The cyanide mill treats 19o tons of silver-gold ore per day. In March of this year the main operations were about 2000 ft. west of the main shaft, which served as the downcast air passage for the mine. The mechanical blowers in use were sufficient to ventilate the west end at that time, but it was foreseen that as the mining area was extended ventilation would be an increasingly difficult problem, especially during the summer months. It was decided, therefore, to continue a raise from a point 100 ft. above the highest mining level (440-ft. level) to the surface; a distance of 443 ft. at approximately 65° From this point 40 ft. of drifting would be necessary to connect with a shallow shaft on the surface. (Fig. I.) All the raise was serviced from the 440-ft. level; costs and progress obtained in the initial 100 ft. are included in the following pages. CHOICE OF RAISE A raise in this locality would have four objects: (I) to provide an ample supply of fresh air to the working places; (2) to explore the vein from the highest mining level to the surface; (3) to provide waste fill for stopes in the area, and possibly provide a transfer for waste from the surface; (4) to provide an emergency exit in the west end of the mine. Before the mining of an ore shoot in the eastern part of the mine, a similar raise had been driven for purposes of ventilation and exploration. This raise and subsequent mining showed the vein to be noncommercial for a distance of about 250 ft. below the surface. However, in the area under operation, old surface workings showed occasional values. Thus from a development standpoint the raise was an excellent prospect. The raise chosen was a three-compartment, stulled raise having two chutes and a manway. The manway inside timber measured 4 ft. 8 in. by 4 ft. 6 in.; it carried air and water pipes, a ladderway and a slide for a timber skip. The two chutes would be used for drawing off the muck and the cleaning of the bulkhead, as well as for ore and waste passes, which would be especially useful for lateral exploration from the raise. The fairly large cross section of the raise (6 by 15 ft.) would provide a large quantity of waste for backfilling, and more could be obtained from a glory hole on the surface. TIME SCHEDULE As speed in completing the raise was the main requisite, three shifts were considered, but two shifts were decided upon when it was found that three would necessitate considerably larger fans than those available for clearing the raise.
