Uranium ore deposits in the Lisbon Valley area are in an arcuate belt, 15 miles long by one-half-mile wide, on the southwest flank of the Lisbon Valley anticline. They range in size from 500 to 1,500,000 tons and by mid-1965 had yielded 6,147,000 tons containing 48,530,000 pounds of U3O8. Ore bodies average 6 feet thick, are tabular, amoeba-shaped masses, concordant to the bedding, and are in the thickest, lowest sandstone unit of the Moss Back Member of the Chinle Formation of Triassic age. The host rock is predominantly a fluviatile, calcareous, fine-grained to conglomeratic sandstone. Uraninite, the principal ore mineral, fills the pores in the sandstone and partly replaces sand grains and fossil wood fragments. During Late Permian and Early Triassic time pre-Chinle Formations were arched to form the ancestral Permian anticline. Moss Back streams truncated Moenkopi and Cutler beds which capped the ancestral anticline and then covered it with fluviatile elastics, which were subsequently covered by thousands of feet of Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous sediments. Uranium, probably derived from the Chinle Formation by diagenetic processes, was transported in connate ground waters, was moved by compaction or hydrostatic forces, and was deposited under reducing conditions. Uranium was emplaced around the crest of the ancestral anticline, prior to the Laramide orogeny. During the orogeny, the Tertiary-Lisbon valley anticline was super induced on the Permian anticline and, penecontemporaneous with uplift, was faulted parallel to its longitudinal axis. The Big Indian ore belt on the southwest flank footwall block was elevated to approximately its present position, and the northeast flank hanging wall block was elevated only slightly. An extension of the Big Indian ore belt around the northeast flank of the ancestral Permian anticline may exist in the Moss Back sandstone in the downthrown block northeast of the Lisbon Valley fault.

I. INTRODUCTION THE smelting plant of the British Columbia Copper Co. at Greenwood, B. C., now closed because of the decline in the price of copper due to the European war, is of special interest to metallurgists for several reasons. It was successfully smelting in blast furnaces the lowest grade copper ore of all plants in America. In order to do so, it had to run at' very high efficiency, which necessarily required a large tonnage per square foot of hearth area, together with the minimum amount of labor and other costs. The furnaces smelted daily 2,250 tons of ore (6.62 tons per sq. ft. of hearth area), carrying 0.85 per cent. of copper, at a smelting cost of $1.18 per ton. The entire plant required 130 men to operate it and keep up repairs, showing a labor efficiency of about 17.5 tons per man per day. In the present paper, the method of obtaining these results is shown. Most of the information contained in this description I obtained as Assistant Superintendent, during the two years preceding the present shutdown. In metallurgical circles it is known widely, but somewhat vaguely, that the ease of reduction of metallic oxides depends largely on the way they hare been prepared. It is likewise known that different forms of carbon have different and greatly varying reducing powers. It is the purpose of this paper to show somewhat more definitely and scientifically these facts. Some years ago the writer published an account of pyrometric determinations of the reduction temperature of zinc oxides variously prepared and of several kinds.' In said paper it was shown that the temperature at which zinc oxide evolves zinc according to the equa-tion ZnO + C = Zn + CO depends upon the nature of the two reacting bodies. The determina-tions had a range of accuracy of from 2° to 6°C., whereas differences were found to amount to an extreme of 90' C. So the differences are real ones and must have a definite cause. The equation of boiling water, (H2O)4 D 4 (H2O) has a fixed temperature for equilibrium of 100° C. at 760 mm. pressure. In general, all equations reacting in the liquid or the gaseous phase have well-defined constant physical conditions which govern the equilibrium point and reaction velocities. In a reaction where we have one or more solid phases, the tempera ture conditions requisite for the unbalancing of the stable system are found to vary. These variations are due to the fact that in a solid there is a very complex molecule and it is not a question solely of the tearing away of two interlocked atoms, but also of the destruction of a complex molecule containing hundreds, or possibly thousands, of smaller molecules. Greater progress than in any previous year was accomplished by the oil industry in New Mexico in 1936. The total number of completions in the state was 631, of which 549 were oil wells, 21 were hydrocarbon gas wells, three were carbon dioxide gas wells, and 58 were dry holes. The total oil production for the year was 26,804,446 bbl. Compared with the production for 1935 of 20,228,947 bbl., this represented a gain of 32.5 per cent. Of the total production, 25,337,382 bbl. came from Lea County. The average daily nonmarginal well allowable for that county was 115 bbl. the first of the year and 86 bbl. at the close. This paper is a discussion of the extremely valuable one of Mathewson and Phillips, The Recrystallization of Cold-Worked Alpha Brass on Annealing,1 which not only gives us a wealth of important data reached with great intelligence, but also shows both uncommon powers of imagination and a perfectly fair spirit. Let me try to analyze some of their results, and to enunciate some of the laws to which these results point. For brevity I refer to them as "The Authors." The page numbers in parentheses refer to their paper. 1. The Visible Aspects of Recrystallization.—Plastic deformation in a single direction, as in cold-rolling, draws the grains out in that direction, that is, inequiaxes them, without destroying their apparent individuality. Each grain seems to endure the drawing out without changing either its volume or its orientation materially, for the etching tint of each grain seems to be as uniform after as before the drawing out, save for the "etch bands,"2 shown in Figs. A to D of the Authors' Plate I. As the drawn-out metal is heated progressively, on reaching a certain "disintegration temperature" these old grains seem to break up, probably into submicroscopic fragments, and this apparent disintegration is followed by a coalescence of these fragments, so that their number decreases and their size increases, till they may become very much coarser than before the drawing out. Ruder3 coarsened the grains of silicon steel in this way till single grains reached an area of 50 cm. (7.75 sq. in.). The deformation itself probably breaks each grain up into many very small fragments, but the fact that each grain continues to have a uniform etching tint different from that of its neighbors indicates that these fragments retain the initial common orientation of the grain. The apparent disintegration which we observe, then, is rather an abandonment of community of orientation for individuality of orientation, by the fragments formed earlier during the deformation. A slight decrease in drilling activity occurred in the oil fields of western Pennsylvania during 1945 and a considerable decrease in the shallow-gas territory (Upper Devonian or higher). The number of deep tests (Middle Devonian or deeper) completed was two less than in 1944 and these did not open any new reserves of natural gas. Thus far, no commercial oil has been encountered in sands below the Upper Devonian in Pennsylvania. Oil production declined 8 per cent.

A first requirement for assessing the safety of a rock slope, either artificial or natural, particularly if the rock behaves in an elastic-brittle manner, is a propw knowledge of the distribution of stresses within the slope and their development with time and advancement of workings. There are a uumber of different methods that can be used, in principle, for obtaining this information, such as (1) stress measurement in situ, (2) photoelasticity,1 (3) analytical methods, and (4) numerical methods. In cases where the stress distribution cannot be obtained by classical analytical methods, as in the one considered herein, either photoelasticity or numerical methods are norrnally used. However, actually, due to the rapid development of high-speed computers, increasing preference is given to the numerical methods. Among the latter, the most successful ones, to date, for determining the stress distribution in slopes have been (1) the finite difference method,2-4 (2) the lumped parameter method,5 and (3) the finite element rnethod.6 However, for determining gravity stresses in a natural rock slope, only the finite difference method has been used until now.7,8 A solution of the same problem by the finite element method will be shown here in which a particular reference is given to the development of tensile fracture zones within the slope. FINITE ELEMENT METHOD The stress analysis using the finite element method originates from an extension of the matrix analysis of structures.9 It consists in decomposing a continuous medium, assumed herein to be homogeneous and isotropic,

In China there are more than 30 coal fields menaced by karst-confined water. In the north and east of China there are many collieries which mine coal seams of the Carboniferous and Permian Systems, which are above the Ordovician limestone (general thickness is 500-600 meters). Ordovician limestone is full of karst fissures, contains a lot of water under high pressure (15-65 kg/cm2) near the commercial coal seams (20-80 meters), the water easily infiltrates the thin lime- stone at the point of the structure crevice, so water-irruptions from the floor are the main source of water-related disasters in these coal fields. According to the statistics there were more than 300 accidents of all kinds of water-irruptions from the floor in these fields since the beginning of their development. It is of great significance in developing coal production in the eastern part of China to solve the problem of safe mining of the seams menaced by the karst-confined water of the Ordovician limestone. The research on this subject consists of three parts: (1) investigating the geological structure and hydrogeological conditions of each mine of the mining area; (2) researching the mechanism of water-irruptions from the floor and proposing reliable methods to predict and monitor; (3) improving the mining system and proposing a mining plan with safety precautions against water-caused accidents. The chief task is to research the mechanisms involved and to discover the causes and conditions of the phenomenon. The authors have obtained some findings on this subject in the last five years, making use of the comprehensive observation and research system, which will be discussed under three headings.

In another paper' the writer has shown that the low permissible maximum fiber stress in a loaded zinc sheet demands a much closer support spacing than is used for steel. The limiting fiber stress in 13-gage (0.032 in.) sheets having a 1-in. depth of corrugation was found to be about 5000 lb. per sq. in. on a 37-in. span under a load of 40 Ib. per sq. ft. Corrugated steel sheets are commonly laid with spans varying from 48 to 60 in. In order to increase the span in 13-gage zinc to 54 in. (a common spacing) the metal must be capable of withstanding, under long-continued loading, a maximum fiber stress of about 10,000 lb. per sq. in. This is known to be impossible with unalloyed zinc. In this paper the writer describes a series of experiments leading up to the development of an alloy capable of safely sustaining this fiber stress. The effect of alloying on the slow creep of zinc was studied by means of static tensile tests, accurate determinations of apparent elastic limits and finally by means of loading tests on full-size roof sections. Two industrial buildings roofed with alloyed zinc sheets on spans involving fiber stresses in excess of 10,000 lb. per sq. in. have been under observation for over two years without signs of sagging. Experimental Work Two methods of increasing the maximum permissible fiber stress in zinc were considered. Cold rolling, which' increases the stiffness and tensile strength, was found to decrease the resistance to slow flow. Alloying, therefore, provided the only feasible means of obtaining the desired result, It was recognized that the improvement secured by the solid solution of natural impurities was insufficient. DURING the past year or two considerable time and money have been spent in developing equipment for tubing large-volume high-pressure oil and gas wells without loss of production. That the efforts have met with success is proved by the fact that any properly cased well, regardless of its production or regardless of its rock pressure or working pressure, can now be safely tubed with no appreciable loss of production, provided experienced crews handle the new equipment. It is conceded that a far better gas-oil ratio can be secured by flowing a well through tubing of a proper diameter-the diameter of the tubing depending, of course, upon the volume of fluid and gas and the depth of the well-than by the more usual method of installing a choke at the mouth of the well. Where possible it is becoming the practice to bring wells in through tubing, though in the majority of instances this is not feasible. In many instances it has developed, after a well has been brought in through tubing, that the tubing installed is either too large or too small for the most efficient operation or that the well had not been drilled deep enough. The equipment described in this paper, in the hands of experienced men, permits the tubing of these wells after they have been brought in, with the size of tubing then determined by actual observation to be best suited for each particular well, and with no danger of the well getting out of control, of catching fire, of drilling itself deeper, or of any loss of production. The deeper the flowing production with the consequent future higher lifting costs, the more essential it is that the size of tubing used be such as to give the best possible gas-oil ratio. The ability to bring in these deep wells through the casing and then, immediately after their completion, regardless of volume or pressure, to tube them with the size of tubing that permits the most efficient use of the gas present will doubtless save many dollars.

The meeting of the Institute at St. Louis brought together many members of the Women's Auxiliary, and Mrs. Philip N. Moore, who was nominated as the Director for the St. Louis Section, took the occasion formally to inaugurate the organization in that district. A meeting was held at the Planters Hotel, anti after discussion as to, the aims and objects of the. Auxiliary, officers were nominated for the' Section; the meeting then adjourned for two days, to he resumed in Joplin.. Here a very successful meeting was held, at which the Vice-Chairman, Secretary, and Treasurer were elected. A great deal of interest was arouse under the able directorship of Mrs. Moore the St. Louis Section is likely to become a large and active organization. The president of the Women's Auxiliary, in opening the meetings, told the ladies present of the inauguration of-the-Society in February, 1917, and of the work which had been accomplished up to date. She told how the Society devotes itself to patriotic and humanitarian work along lines acceptable and interesting to the Mining Engineer, standing always alongside and behind the men of the profession. The Central Welfare Committee of the organization has three Sub-Committees: Foreign Relief, Emergency, and Americanization, and under one or other of those heads most of the work of the' Society has been done. Mr. Hoover was responsible for the inception of the Foreign Relief Committee, as its first work was the collection of funds for the supplementary meals for the Belgian Children. Under the energetic administration of Mrs. H. Knox, this sub-committee raised $12,100 in the period between the February meeting and the Declaration of war by the United States, when our government took over the entire duty of feeding starving Belgium. The organization of the Belgian Relief Committee, as it was styled, still remains, but the members are now asked to take up the question of relief in France. The President, Mrs. S. J. Jennings suggested at the St. Louis meetings that one way of working for the foreign relief alight be that all the members of the Auxiliary should, during the period of the war, forego all giving' and receiving of Christmas presents, except those they have been accustomed to give to the poor or in charity, and those they would give to the men in the services of the United States; that the money usually spent on the Christmas gifts should be put into a fund to be sent abroad for the fatherless children of France, as a gift from the families of the Institute. A good deal of discussion followed this proposal, as some of the ladies felt that children should have their Christmas gifts as usual. The Director of the Section emphasized the truth that the Christmas spirit was the .spirit of giving and sacrifice, and that no sacri-

Use of AN-FO in underground operations has greatly reduced the cost of primary explosives. AN-FO is also less sensitive than conventional dynamites, and when properly used, is safer. Maximum safety in the use of AN-FO, however, requires an understanding of potential hazards from toxic fumes as well as static electricity developed in pneumatic loading. Safe limits and guides have been established to permit most operations to pneumatically load holes that are bottom primed with electric blasting caps, but the toxic fume hazard is less widely understood. During 1959-1960 Du Pont cooperated with the U.S. Bureau of Mines to study the toxic fumes produced by prilled ammonium nitrate-NO. 2 fuel oil mixtures. The conclusions from this work were that oxygen balanced AN-FO, when thoroughly mixed, well primed and well confined in dry holes, produces no greater amounts of toxic fumes than conventional dynamites rated Class I by the Institute of Makers of Explosives. The study also showed, however, that any deviation from these guides tends to increase significantly the quantity of toxic fumes produced. This work was reported by the Bureau of International Symposium on Mining Research at Rolla, Mo., in February 1961.'

ONLY two of the Institute's 26 Local Sections were unrepresented at the delegates' three sessions, held on Monday morning and afternoon and Thursday afternoon of the annual meeting. The Philadelphia and Wyoming Sections alone sent no delegates. In all, seven hours were spent most profitably in reviewing the work done by the Institute at headquarters and in the field, comparing ideas and practices in varied activities, and in establishing personal contacts. Cordiality and the co¬operative spirit marked the meeting and apparently no one had any serious grievances to air. Four motions were introduced and unanimously passed. The first, which was introduced by B. L. Sackett, was a recommendation by the delegates that a national committee be appointed to cooperate with Local Sections in the matter of student activities, to promote Institute welfare. It was agreed that this recommendation be made simultaneously to the Board of Directors and to the Mineral Industry Education Division. A subsequent resolution by A. M. Smith was passed asking that a part of the duties of this committee be to secure the opinions of Local Sections as to the most desirable methods of interesting students in the preparation of technical papers, by giving prizes or otherwise, and to report their findings at the Section Delegates' meeting next year.

There was a decline in the Italian oil production in 1933 and also in the footage drilled. A total of about 194,500 bbl. of crude oil was produced in the Emilia district of northern Italy from the same fields in production as in 1932. New drilling to the extent of 80,700 ft. failed to find new production to compensate for the decline in old wells, and no new fields were discovered in spite of an active exploration campaign by the government-owned company A.G.I.P., which has just completed the first year of a five-year exploration program. This company drilled a total of about 33,000 ft. The majority of its tests were drilled in the Po Valley upon locations selected by geophysical methods. This company is changing over to the rotary system for all future wells. It produced about 16,600 bbl. of oil from wells near Salsomaggiore and in the Po Valley. The Petroli d'Italia, which operates the old fields of Montechino, Valleja and Gratera south of Piacenza, has been doing normal development drilling in the endeavor to extend its present fields. Also it was drilling two exploration wells in the Torino district. It drilled a total of about 13,930 ft. and produced approximately 12,645 bbl. of very high-grade oil (specific gravity about 0.765). The Societa Petrolifera Italiana was occupied chiefly in exploratory drilling in the endeavor to extend its producing fields at Salsomaggiore and at Vallezza, south of Parma. It was also drilling one exploration well at Rile dell7Olio near Voghera on the line Milan-Genoa. It drilled a total of 33,849 ft. and obtained a production from its two fields of 165,273 bbl. It also produced 123,220 gal. of casinghead gasoline from Vallezza field absorption plant.

When this country went into the war, but two concerns, The Bethlehem Steel Co. and The Midvale Steel and Ordnance Co., knew how to make steel fit for great cannons and at these concerns there were relatively few men who knew the whole art. Fortunately, certain of these men put their knowledge at the service of the Government, and proceeded to instruct the metallurgists at the arsenals and at various steel works. Doctor Howe, then chairman of the Engineering Division of the National Research Council, suggested that this work might be facilitated, and the number of effective gun-steel makers thereby increased, if a detailed description of the best practice could be written, giving the reasons for the various steps, and issued with the endorsement of a committee composed of those who were evidently the most competent authorities. It was thought that something would be gained by clarification of the subject, and something by the eminent authority of the members of the committee. To that end, the Engineering Division appointed a committee, consisting of the gentlemen whose names follow, to mention on1y those who retained their connection with it. At this time there were serious difficulties in the manufacture, for the Government. of aircraft and high-speed engine crankshafts, of certain ordnance forgings, and of shells for both the Army and Navy. This Committee was asked to study and report upon these, with a view to betterment of practice. There were indications that the source of some of the difficulties went back to the melting of the steel and the production of the ingot. Hence, the committee first studied steel melting and ingot production, in order to guide the wartime manufacturers to an even larger percentage of useful production from the steel initially melted. INTRODUCTION The Sunshine Mining Company's 16-to-1 silver deposit and mine project are located 384 kilometers (240 miles) southeast of Reno and 360 kilometers (225 miles northwest of Las Vegas, near Silver Peak in Esmeralda County, Nevada, at an elevation of about 2,300 meters (7,000 feet). The deposit was being developed, in 1980, with an anticipated mining and milling rate of 150,000 tons per year (500 tons per day). Mining is by underground, blast-hole open stoping with rubber-tire haul-age out of the mine to a straight cyanide plant about 5.5 kilometers (3.5 miles) from the mine. The product is a gold-silver dore which may be further refined at Sunshine's new refinery in Kellogg, Idaho. The cash required for investment was obtained through the sale of $25 million worth of 6 l/2h silver-indexed bonds. Some $15.0 million were directed toward development of the 16-to-1 Mine. These bonds, which were underwritten by Drexel Burnham Lambert of Chicago in April of 1980, are redeemable on or after April 15, 1985 or payable at maturity on April 15, 1995 at the greater of either $1,000 or the market price of 50 ounces of silver. Behre Dolbear acknowledges the kindness of the Sunshine Mining Company (Sunshine) for allowing the presentation of the subject material for this Case Study. APPLICABILITY AS CASE STUDY Reasons for Choosing 16-to-1 The reasons for choosing the 16-to-1 Mine as a case study follow: 1. The project is simple and compact. 2. The mine is small -- thus relevant to other contemplated precious metal operaions in the western states. 3. The areas of risk are readily identifiable. 4. A change to project financing was under consideration. 5. A substantial decline in the price of silver was experienced during development. 6. Behre Dolbear undertook one of the first feasibility studies of The 16-to-1 and thus has some familiarity with the project. Historical Summary The following history serves as a setting: 1. Late 1920s -- minor "production"(?) via shallow pitting. 2. Mid-1930s -- neighboring Nivlok Mine successfully put into production. 3. Late 1950s (?) -- Callahan Mining Company acquired rights and drilled -- results inconclusive; Callahan turned property back to Arthur Baker, who had originally interested Callahan in 16-to-1 on the basis of its similarity with Nivlok Mine.

World production of electrolytic zinc has shown an increase for each year since 1932. Production up to 1936 was summarized in my earlier paper [Trans. A.I.M.E. (1936) 121, 453-4641, and this present paper carries the subject through 1943. During this time of increase, it is safe to say that the average purity has been raised more or less continuously, and the amount of four-nines metal has been in- creased. While the period reflects preparations for and the carrying on of the present war, electrolytic zinc proved its value in many industries as a peacetime metal in the years from 1919 to 1940. World production (Table I) increased from about 594,000 tons in 1936 to around 858,000 tons in 1943; United States production increased from 127,171 tons to 329,903 tons for the same years. Total production of primary zinc in the United States is given in the first column of Table I; retort production of primary zinc, obtained by difference, in the last column. The curves drawn from these figures are shown in Fig. I. They represent continuations of the curves in the earlier paper that cover commercial production of electrolytic zinc from its inception in 1915 to 1935. It is known that austenitic chromium-nickel steels that have free carbide in the grain boundaries are subject to intergranu-lar corrosion. It is difficult to detect such a susceptible condition in a fabricated article because present test methods require a sample section for examination and in most cases this is difficult to obtain. The question of the nature and prevention of intergranular corrosion in austenitic stainless steels has been ably discussed by Bain and co-workers1-3 and by other investigator4-10 The present methods of study subject samples to corrosive conditions in such reagents as the Strauss solution, a mixture of copper sulphate and sulphuric acid. Such tests usually require at least 72 hr. to run. Various methods of measuring the degree of sensitization have been employed, such as the measurement of electrical resistivity, magnetic measuremerits, measurement of the degree of cracking produced on bending over a malldrel, and microscopic studies. The detection of carbides at the grain boundaries by metallographic polishing and etching methods is tedious and requires a skilled operator. A recent report on such methods of carbide detection is given by the American Society for Testing Materials Subcommittee VI of Committee A.-1011 and by Arness.12 The present investigation was undertaken to develop a simple test procedure for detecting carbide precipitation or susceptibility to intergranular corrosion. The test is designed for use in the plant and for the testing of fabricated structures. Carbide precipitation, the factor leading to susceptibility to corrosion, is produced by heating the alloy in the temperature range 800° to 1600°F., as in welding, in improper annealing or in service where such temperatures are met. The connection between such precipitation and susceptibility to corrosion has been thoroughly discussed, as has been the use of stabilizing addition elements to prevent precipitation. Experimental Method A small area of the steel under test is subjected to an anodic treatment in a cell that can be 'lamped Onto a a Or an actual structure. The cell and electrical circuit used are illustrated in Fig. I. The cell C is lead, joined to the steel plate D and insulated from it by a short piece of rubber tubing E. The cell is forced tightly against the steel plate by a spring Or clamping device. The seal formed by the rubber against the steel plate is sufficient to retain the liquid bath inside the cell. The spot treated can be made any shape desired, depending on the shape of the rubber gasket. The cell illustrated polishes a circular spot about 3/8- diameter' The bath consists of 60 per cent (by weight) sulphuric acid to which is added 5 ml. per liter of Glycyrrhiza extract (U.S.P.). The cell requires about 2 to 2.5
