FEW mining schools possess an art gallery and certainly none can equal the collection of paintings depicting the mineral industries now hanging in the comparatively new building of the School of Mineral Industries at The Pennsylvania State College. Dean Steidle, who conceived the idea, early this spring boasted of 55 paintings in the collection, by 24 different artists, the gallery being appraised at $18,000. Since then, eleven additional paintings have been added. Opportunity will he presented for an inspection at the meeting of the Industrial Minerals Division, to be held at the College, Sept. 24-26.

Examination showed that characteristic cleavage step patterns are observed on the cleavage surfaces of undeformed, slipped, bent, twinned, compressed, and indented zinc crystals; and the effect of temperature is discussed. Dimples were seen to produce cleavage steps in a treelike pattern in otherwise undeformed crystals. The steps seem to originate when cracks intersect screw dislocations. IT has been known for a long time that the path of fracture in polycrystals may be discontinuous (see Jaffe, Reed, and Mannl for review). Recently, Kies, Sullivan, and Irwin2 have proposed, and given evidence, that crack propagation is discontinuous within individual crystals as well. Other evidence has been given by Low.' When discontinuous cracks within a crystal join together to make a macrocrack, the lamellae between each set of two cracks are torn somewhere, forming small cliffs. These cliffs appear as lines when the cleavage surface is observed microscopically.4,5 The lines have been called vein, tree, and riverlike markings by various authors, and they have sometimes been mistaken for fissures. The descriptive term cleavage steps is used in this paper. Cleavage steps vary in height over a wide range of values, from molecular dimensionsG to lor. and larger. Kies, Sullivan, and Irwin,2 as well as George,' have shown that the gross cleavage step patterns for plastics, polycrystalline metals, and for mono-crystals are sometimes similar. Thus, they depend mostly on the mechanical variables that prevail during cleavage and are relatively insensitive to the structure of the material. For example, parabolic markings2,7,8 sometimes result when cracks open up ahead of, and not coplanar with, the main crack front. If the advance crack has the same velocity as the main crack, their intersection line is a parabola, otherwise it is a hyperbola or an ellipse. The patterns are strongly affected by differences in crack velocities. This results in chevron patterns which point to the place of origin of the main crack. It is the purpose of this paper to demonstrate the existence of a mechanism of cleavage step formation which is a continuous rather than a discontinuous process. Also, certain characteristic step patterns are described, and the strong effect of temperature is shown. The specimens were zinc monocrystals (grown from 99.999+ pct pure metal). These were cleaved at room temperature and at — 196°C. Results and Discussion Cleavage step patterns are highly variable from point to point on a given specimen, as well as from one specimen to another. Although the patterns shown in the photographs are typical, they have been selected for graphic illustration. Figs. la and lb compare undeformed crystals that were cleaved at —196 °C and room temperature, respectively. Cleavage at room temperature (Fig. lb) resulted in a higher density of high steps (dark black lines) and enhanced the visibility of the fine background markings. Deformation by simple slip caused no marked change in the step patterns until the glide strain reached about 1.0. But, as Fig. lc shows, the density of high cleavage steps was greatly increased by large glide strains. Corrugations lying perpendicular to the slip direction may also be seen in Fig. lc. These are caused by deformation bands. The cleavage resistance of the crystal of Fig. lc was very high compared to undeformed crystals (estimated by the force on a needle required for cleavage). Striking and varied cleavage step patterns were observed on bent crystals. Two characteristic patterns that were observed on crystals bent at 25°C, and cleaved by reverse bending at —196°C, are shown in Figs. 2a and 2b. The first, Fig. 2a, consists of V-shaped lines similar to the parabolas of other materials2,7 Fig. 2b shows a pattern that is the equivalent of Fig. la, consisting of faint background lines with a few higher step markings. Cleavage of bent crystals at room temperature resulted in Figs. 2c and 2d. Now, the cleavage step lines show a strong tendency to follow one of two perpendicular paths. In Fig. 2c (bent once), many of the cleavage step components that lie parallel to the bend axis are assembled into irregular lines. In Fig. 2d (bent twice), the cleavage steps again tend to consist of two perpendicular components, but neither of the components is assembled into lines. Also, the step density is higher.

Briquetting is apparently a very simple operation, yet it has offered so many mechanical and chemical difficulties that it required almost a century to place it on a commercial basis. Since 1860, however, the progress has been steady and satisfactory, and to-day, for most of the European coal companies, the briquette-plant is a very profitable investment. Among the many applications of scientific knowledge to further economy by recovering and utilizing by-products and raw materials, there is possibly none which deserves the attention of Americans to a higher degree than briquetting. The recent miners' strike in Pennsylvania, which resulted in a scarce and irregular supply of coal at a high price, has advanced the possibilities for briquetting, and as a consequence public interest has grown rapidly. In connection with an investigation in this laboratory on the high-zinc side of the copper-zinc system, it was observed that well developed segregate structures of the Widmansttten type were formed when a secondary phase precipitated from the solid solution of copper in zinc. This paper presents an analysis of the crystallographic relationship between the segregate and the solid solution matrix. The data to be presented are an interesting addition to the literature on segregate structures in that the plane of segregation is one of the less densely populated planes. In agreement with the generalization of C. H. Mathewson and D. W. Smith' the plane of segregation in the matrix contains the direction of closest atomic packing of the lattice. Furthermore, the matrix and the segregate are both hexagonal close-packed, which has not been reported hitherto in the 1iternture.l The increasing commercial importance of zinc alloys containing copper makes this fundamental study of value to the metallography of zinc alloys. Zinoeich Copper-zinc Alloys Copper enters into solid solution with zinc to at least 1.8 per cent at 400" C., according to W. M. Peirce.3 The solubility is less at lower temperatures. Thus a solid solution of copper in zinc, saturated at an elevated temperature, will precipitate the excess copper in a separate phase at a lower temperature, conditions of concentration, time, and temperature being suitable. The nature of these two phases has been established by the X-ray method of crystal analysis. Westgren and Phmgmén4 and also Owen and Preston5 have shown that the solid solution eta (7) is of the substitu-tional type with copper atoms replacing zinc atoms on the hexagonal

The distribution of silicon between liquid silver and Fe-Si-C alloys has been studied at 1420oand 1530°C. The data are consistent with earlier studies. New data of Hager on the liquidus lines of the system Ag-Si and the distribution data are used to obtain the activity coefficient of silicon in both liquid phases. Data on the heat of mixing in iron permit accurate extension to 1600°C. Equilibrium data involving SiO2 and silicon in liquid iron together with revised data on the free energy of SiO2 are used to fix the activity of silicon in the infinitely dilute solution. The binary system exhibits strong negative deviation from ideality. At infinite dilution ? Si at 1600" is 1.25 x 10'3, and at concentrations up to NSi = 0.4 the slope d InySi/dNSi has a constant value of r; = 13. It is found that logysi in the ternary solutzon is approximately but not exactly the same function of Nsi + NC as of NSi in the binary. The results are consistent with currently available data on the free energy of Sic and its solubility in molten iron. LIQUID solutions of the system Fe-Si-C have acquired considerable importance as the laboratory prototypes of blast furnace hot metal. Equilibrium studies involving such solutions and slags approximating those of the blast furnace have yielded useful information concerning the thermodynamic properties of blast furnace slags. In studies of this kind great importance attaches to a knowledge of the thermodynamic activity of silicon in the solution as a function of temperature and composition. An attempt was made by Chipman, Fulton, Gokcen, and askey' to evaluate all of the pertinent data on this system and to deduce the desired relation between activity, composition, and temperature. These authors published data on the solubility of graphite and Sic in molten Fe-C-Si solutions and on the distribution of silicon between liquid iron and liquid silver. They showed further how the activity of silicon in very dilute solutions in liquid iron could be calculated from equilibrium data involving the molten alloy and solid SiO,. These calculations rested on the published thermodynamic properties of SiO, in- cluding its heat of formation which at that time was recorded as -209.8 kcal. This value has been under suspicion for some time and has recently been replaced by the concordant results from two independent laboratories2,3 which place the heat of formation of a-quartz at -217.6 kcal. This revision necessitates a re-evaluation not only of the activity of SiO2 in slag but also of silicon in molten iron. It is the purpose of this paper, therefore, to recalculate the activity of silicon, and in furtherance of this objective to present new data on its distribution between liquid Fe-Si-C alloys and liquid silver. HEAT OF SOLUTION OF SILICON IN IRON In order to determine the effect of temperature upon the activity coefficient it is necessary to know the heat of solution of silicon in iron as a function of composition. This is found in the data of Korber and Oelsen4 shown in Fig. 1. The curve corresponds to the following equation, which is of a form suggested by Wagner:5 Here AH is the heat absorbed in kilocalories in forming one gram atom of molten alloy from its molten elements and the N's are atom fractions. The relative partial molal enthalpies of the components, each referred to its pureliquid state and defined as zFe = aFe - PFe and zsi = HSi — -psi, are shown graphically. At low concentrations zSi = -28.5 kcal, in agreement with Kijrber and Oelsen's computation. This is in good agreement with the value of -29.3 kcal obtained by Chipman and Grant6 using an entirely different method. ACTIVITY AT INFINITE DILUTION From the known free energy of SiO, it is possible to obtain the activity of silicon in dilute solution in liquid iron from equilibrium studies. The heat of formation of a-quartz is —217.6 kcal and the heat capacity and entropy data are given by Kelley and ~ing.' The free energy of formation of ß-cristo-balite at temperatures above the melting point of silicon is expressed by the following equation: Si(Z) + O2(g) = SiO2 (crist); AF" =-226,500 + 47.50T [I] The value of the deoxidation product for silicon [%Si] x [%O]2 at 1600°C according to Gokcen and chipmans is 2.8 x 10"5, in agreement with results of Hilty and Crafts.9 More recent works of Matoba,

THE Federated American Engineering Societies through its Executive Board has endorsed House Bill 5230, introduced April 26, 1921, which provides for- the completion of the topographical survey of the United States. Before this bill can be reported out it will be necessary for the House Committee on -interstate and foreign commerce to hold hearings. This will not be done unless the engineers of the country show interest -and demand action which should be taken immediately after the recess ends and Congress reconvenes this fall. Surveys and maps have been made in this country ever since Captain John Smith mapped Chesapeake Bay about. 300 years ago, but it is only in comparatively recent years that the need for accurate maps has been keenly felt by those engaged in the industrial' and commercial development of the country.

A detailed investigation was made of the phase diagram of silver-zirconium, particularly in the region 0 to 36 at. pct Ag. The system was found to be characterized by two intermediate phases Zr2Ag and ZrAg and a eutectoid reaction in which the -zirconium solid solution decomposes into a-zirconium and Zr2Ag. It was found that impurities in the range 0.05 pct from the iodide-type zirconium were sufficient to introduce deviations from binary behavior, and that with partial removal of these impurities an increase in the a-phase solid solubility limit from 0.1 to 1.1 at. pct Ag was observed. The phase diagram of the silver-zirconium system is of interest as an example of alloying a transition metal from the left side of the Periodic Table with a Group IB element. Silver would normally act as a univalent metal, its filled 4d-shell remaining undisturbed during the alloying. However, there is a possibility that some of the 4d electrons might transfer to the zirconium. An insight into such a question can occasionally be obtained by comparison of phase diagrams. The silver-zirconium system forms part of a more complete review of various solutes in zirconium in which these valency effects were studied.' Earlier work on the silver-zirconium system was done by Raub and Enge1,2 who investigated the silver-rich alloys. After the start of the present experhents, work on this system was reported by Kemper3 and by Karlsson4 which for the most part agrees with the phase diagram presented here. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The alloys were prepared by arc casting on a water-cooled, copper hearth with a tungsten electrode and in a pure argon atmosphere. Uniform solute composition was attained by multiple melting on alternate sides of the same ingot. Progressive improvements in the vacuum conditions inside the apparatus during the course of the experiments reduced the Vickers hardness increase of the pure zirconium control ingot from 10 to 20 points, observed initially, to negligible amounts at the end of the experiments. Such hardness changes in zirconium are a well known indication of purity. For example, -01 wt pct additions of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon increase hardness by 6, 10, and 3 VPN respectively. '9' Further verification that the final casting technique did not add a significant quantity of impurities was obtained when pure zirconium was arc cast and then isothermally annealed in the vicinity of the allotropic transition. The transition was always observed to take place over the same temperature range as in the original crystal bar. The alloy ingots were annealed in sealed silica capsules for times and temperatures which varied between 1 day at 1300°C and 60 days at 700°C. The best method found to prevent the reaction of the zirconium with the silica was foil wrapping of molybdenum or tantalum. With this method, samples of pure zirconium were found to be unchanged in hardness after annealing for 3 days at 1200°C. In most of the experiments the protection of these foils was supplemented by an additional layer of zirconium foil inside the molybdenum or tantalum foil. The alloys, foil, and the capsule were outgassed at pressures in the range 10 to l0-7mm Hg in the temperature range 800" to 1100°C before each anneal in order to remove hydrogen and other impurities, and to provide a suitable container for the high purity, inert atmosphere, which is essential in the annealing of zirconium. The temperature measurements were made with Pt/Pt + 10 pct Rh thermocouples calibrated frequently during the experiments against the melting points of zinc, aluminum, silver, gold, and palladium. For the longer anneals the sum of various temperature errors was generally well within ± 2°C. For short-time anneals and during thermal analysis the overall temperature error is considered to be within ± 0.5°C. The compositions of the alloys from the quenching experiments were determined by chemical analysis at Johnson Matthey and Company, Ltd., under the direction of Mr. F. M. Lever. The actual metallo-graphic samples were individually analyzed in every case, and prior to the analyses two or more sides of each specimen were examined to insure that the specimen was not segregated. The sum of the solute and solvent analyses was in each case within the range 99.9 to 100.1 pct. In the course of the experiments, minor impurities in the range 0 to 500 ppm were found to have significant effects on the zirconium-rich portion of the phase diagram. Two sessions during the recent AMC Mining Convention in Los Angeles, September 23-26, served to update industry personnel on the status of health and safety regulations in the US. As reflected by the American Mining Congress resolution on mine safety and health, "Based on experience with the federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 and the federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977, (AMC) does not believe that laws designed to force compliance with regulations through the imposition of criminal or civil penalties will result in safer mines. (AMC) feels that the government's participation will be much more productive if greater emphasis is placed on research, training, and inspections aimed primarily at assisting operators and employees in recognizing and eliminating hazardous conditions and practices.

SEVERAL authors1-6 have shown that, during solidification from the melt, the direction of formation of substructure boundaries depends upon the direction of heat flow and the rate of solidification of the metal. The most prominent of these observations was that a preferred orientation developed during the solidification of the columnar zone of an ingot which for face-centered-cubic metals was the <100> direction. Previous explanations1-&apos; given to account for this preferred orientation and the other boundary phenomena are all based on the premise that the phenomena are characteristics of the pure element. However, recent experiments by Rosenberg and Tiller7 have demonstrated that the preferred orientation in pure lead is the <111> orientation, and that the heretofore observed <100> orientation is due to the effect of solute on the mode of solidification of the metal. Teghtsoonian and Chalmers,4 studying striation boundaries in tin, and Chalmers and Rutter,5 studying corrugation boundaries in tin, showed that these substructure boundaries were aligned parallel to the axis of heat flow for slow rates of growth, and that the alignment varied from this direction as a function of the rate of growth. to approach the den-drite direction at high rates. Chalmers,6 studying the direction of formation of a grain boundary separating two crystals of different orientation, showed that at slow growth rates the boundary is parallel to the axis of heat flow, while at higher speeds it will deviate from this direction, sloping into the crystal whose dendrite orientation departs the most from the axis of heat flow. It is this phenomenon that allows certain crystallites in the chill zone region of an ingot to encroach on their neighbors and ultimately produce the preferred orientation of the columnar zone of the ingot. Since the previous explanations of this preferred orientation are unable to account for the recent observations,&apos; a new mechanism will be considered. This will lead to an explanation of the other substructure boundary phenomena as well. Investigations by Graf,8 Billig,9 Rsenberg,10 and others have demonstrated in a striking fashion that crystal growth takes place by the deposition of individual layers oriented along the close-packed planes of the material considered. Albert Sauveur writes, on Apr. 16, 1918, while the German offensive was at its height, as follows: "In spite of the German guns and air raids we are all in good health and spirits and shall leave Paris only as a last extremity. Our unlimited confidence in Foch, however, makes us believe that it will not be necessary. I trust that everything is well with you at the Institute." Harold Whittingham entered the active service with the heavy artillery in England at the beginning of the war and has been fighting in France since February, 1915. He now holds the rank of Major. On Dec. 17, 1917, after being wounded, he was taken prisoner by the Germans, and, so far as is known, is still in a prison camp in Germany. Charles W. Wright, who is a Captain in charge of the work of the American Red Cross in Sardinia, Italy, writes that the service there is giving aid to about 80,000 soldiers&apos; families and is upholding the good repute of America in that place. W. S. Holloway in 1914 joined the Sportsmans&apos; Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers as a private, but is now a Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers, Mining Corps. THE Maintenance Committee of the Coal Division of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers is presenting as a part of this report the second of a series of maintenance cost comparisons. The committee&apos;s purpose is to assemble maintenance costs on all equipment connected with mechanical operations at the face of coal mining and to arrange these costs by districts so that comparisons can be made between districts and within districts. The committee, this year, sent 35 questionnaires to representative coal companies who either reported last year or had advised specifically of the inability to report to last year&apos;s questionnaire primarily because of limited time. The response to the questionnaire this year was not as good as last year, only 20 of the 35 selected companies returning a completed questionnaire. This year&apos;s data has been .compiled and combined with last year&apos;s data to present a comparison of the 1945 and 1946 costs of loading machines, shortwall cutting machines, universal cutting machines, service locomotives, shuttle cars, and mine cars. The same tabulation by districts is used as was used for 1945. As was indicated by last year&apos;s report there is considerable variation in the maintenance cost of mining machinery in the various coal mining districts and due to this high variability it was not felt practical to attempt to Arrive at weighted averages. Consequently, all average figures used in this report are straight averages. An analysis was made of companies reporting both this year and last year in an attempt to determine the trend in maintenance costs for different classes of equipment. Ten representative companies are used in this computation. Table I shows the average cost for 1945 and 1946. It is felt that the negative trend in the maintenance cost of universal cutting machines probably represents the effect of the purchase of a relatively large number o new machines in 1946 with little maintenance cost appearing during the first yeas of operation. The grand total figure indicates an upward trend amounting to plus 18.7 pct. However, this figure is viewer with some suspicion because of the effect of the universal cutters decreasing maintenance cost and it is concluded that direct application of percentage increase should be made to types of equipment. IT is 27 years since I last visited Broken Hill, New South Wales, one of the world&apos;s greatest lead-silver-zinc districts. Then, the flota¬tion of ores was in its infancy. The Minerals Separation process had its birth as a practicability in the Central Mill, which is still operating and yielding high recoveries. The average Australian knows that Broken Hill is an important mining center in a "corner" of New South Wales, but he does not know what a factor it is in the lead, silver, and zinc production of the world. Nor does he realize that among the ramifications arising from metal production at Broken Hill are the great lead smelter at Port Pirie, South Australia, 254 miles southeast; the electrolytic zinc works at Risdon, and the limestone mine at Davenport, Tasmania; the acid works at Cockle Creek, New

INVESTIGATIONS by the Bureau of Mines of deposits containing strategic minerals were authorized by what has become known as the Strategic Materials Act (Public No. 117, 76th Congress, Chapter 190. 1st Session). A later act providing an appropriation for the first of four years through which the investigations are to be conducted was signed on Aug. 9, 1939. No time has since been lost as seven field projects already are being vigorously prosecuted, and two others no doubt soon will be in course of execution. Project engineers were at their stations within two days after funds had been made available. Crews have been hired; equipment and supplies have been purchased; 5 bids for diamond drilling have been obtained and the drilling has started base camps have been established: ground has been cleared; and several thousand feet of trenching, test-pitting, and sampling have already been done. At the Reno Experiment Station of the Bureau, a special metallurgical laboratory has been provided to make assays, analyses, and tests upon samples of ores from all projects under investigation.

THE phosphate-rock industry is built upon natural deposits of rocks and minerals in which the element phosphorus is present as a phoshate. The term ?phosphate rock? is a general one, applied to certain rocks of different degrees of consolidation and of diverese origin, charater and occurrence, composed of intimate mixtures of several phosphate minerals, largely submicrocrystalline, usually calcium phosphates, in commerical quantities, with various impurities. This term includes phosphatized limestones, sandstone, shales, and igneous rocks; nodular phosphates ; residual weathered phosphatic limestones ; vein phosphates ; and phosphatic sediments, both consolidated and unconsolidated.

ON FEBRUARY 4, 1952, the Phelps Dodge Corporation signed Contract GS-00P(D)-12068 with the United States Government. This interesting document dealt with the "Bisbee East" project as part of the Government&apos;s program to increase the supply of needed copper by encouraging private enterprise to expand production. The ore deposit involved was a relatively small body of low-grade ore lying east of the remnants of the old Sacramento Hill deposit that was exploited with indifferent success from 1923 to 1931, as related in THE PORPHYRY COPPERS. Planning for the entire enterprise had been directed from the start by Harrison M. Lavender, who in 1945, succeeded Percy G. Beckett as vice-president and general manager for all of Phelps Dodge&apos;s Western mines and smelters. The untimely death of Mr. Lavender in 1952 prevented him from seeing his plans brought to fruition; but in his honor the mine was fit- tingly named "The Lavender Pit" and was so dedicated on August 7, 1954. The Copper Queen Branch operates under- ground mines at Bisbee (production in 1955 was 28,000 tons) ; but, as this volume is concerned only with Porphyry operations, this chapter deals only with the Lavender Pit project, or as the Government knows it, Bisbee East. My reason for going into some detail regarding the floor-price contract is that it is fairly typical of contracts made by the Government in connection with a half-dozen other copper-expansion projects; and, incidentally, with various projects involving other strategic metals. Phelps Dodge did not seek a loan or other financial aid. The only encouragement asked consisted of (a) the privilege of a five-year write-off (commonly called rapid tax amortization)

This year&apos;s data have been compiled and combined with last year&apos;s data to present a comparison of the 1945 and 1946 costs of loading machines, shortwall cutting machines, universal cutting machines, service locomotives, shuttle cars, and mine cars. The same tabulation by districts is used as was used for 1945. As was indicated by last year&apos;s report there is considerable variation in the in cost of mining machinery in the various coal mining districts and due to this high variability it was not felt practical to attempt to arrive at weighted averages. Consequently, all average figures used in this report are straight averages. An analysis was made of companies reporting both this year and last year in an attempt to determine the trend in maintenance costs for different classes of equipment. Ten representative companies are used in this computation. Table I shows the average cost for 1945 and 1946. It is felt that the negative trend in the maintenance cost of universal cutting machines probably represents the effect of the purchase of a relatively large number of new machines in 1946 with little maintenance cost appearing during the first Year of operation. The grand total figure indicates an upward trend amounting to plus 18.7 pet. However, this figure is viewed with some suspicion because of the effect of the universal cutters decreasing maintenance cost and it is concluded that direct application of percentage increase should be made to types of equipment. Aluminum and copper single crystals were strained in shear, unloaded and rotated 60, 120, and 180 deg. The magnitude of the Bauschinger strain increased rapidly during the easy glide region and became constant as the easy glide limit was reached. An increment in stress was not required to continue slip in any close-packed plane or in the reverse direction during easy glide. A qualitative theory is proposed to explain the present results. FOLLOWING the initial work on tin by Bausch,&apos; there have been several investigatorsB7 who have employed the shear test to study the deformation of aluminum. In all cases the shear technique was employed in an attempt to obtain a more homogeneous shear than in the conventional tension test The direct shear technique has the obvious advantage, relative to the tension test, that a crystal may be stressed in any predetermined plane and direction, including the reversal of strain sense. In the present investigation the shear technique was employed with aluminum and copper single crystals and their behavior was studied with respect to deformation in all close-packed directions in the octahedral plane. In contrast to previous investigations, the shear technique was used in an attempt to obtain a stress-strain curve in shear which is identical with the corresponding tension curve and then to use the additional degree of freedom of the shear test to study the mechanical behavior of crystals in all close-packed directions in the octahedral plane. PREPARATION OF CRYSTALS Single crystals 1/2 in. in diam and 6 to 7 in. long, were prepared from aluminum containing 0.001 pct Si, 0.001 pct Fe, and 0.001 pct Zn, by spectro-graphic ana1ysis and from OFHC copper. Crystals were grown from the melt in graphite at a rate of 1 5 in. per hr. The copper crystals were grown under an argon atmosphere. No lineage structure was observed in Laue patterns, though small angle boundaries were present in the crystals. Changes in existing airway and fan-installation conditions offer the most common opportunities for effecting economical operation of mine-ventilating systems, but the largest possibilities for securing this result lie in the original design of the main airways for efficient service. Formulas, and charts for their graphical solution, are presented herewith for the determination of the elements of airways design when the conditions of service are known or may be roughly approximated. Although the analyses are made with particular reference to metal-mine airways, there is no essential difference between main airways in metal and coal mines, and the methods presented are applicable to both. Little attention is paid to designing airways for maximum economy in the ventilation of metal mines. Most of the openings used as main airways are originally designed and used for transportation and other operating purposes. Even where openings are made primarily for ventilation, the possibility of their future use for other operating purposes, or even custom alone, usually results in the selection of a size and shape similar to those of existing openings. Natural conditions, such as heavy ground, often seriously limit the size of opening that can be maintained without excessive expense; and various operating factors, such as velocity limitations on traveling roads, often dictate size requirements in excess of those required for economy in ventilation only. In metal mines the main airways are, as a rule, too small rather than too large for economic service, with the general result that the quantities in circulation are often less than the mine&apos;s proper requirements over long periods, even though excessive amounts of power are applied in an effort to remedy conditions. Increasing the area of an airway increases the cost for excavation and lining practically proportionately but at the same time affects a very rapid decrease in power requirements. The balancing of these two factors of the expense to give a minimum total yearly operating cost for ventilation is mainly a matter of proper original design of the main airways of the mine, since the large volumes handled through these parts of the system involve large power costs and thus present opportunities for effecting large savings through proper design. THE decades immediately before and after the end of the nineteenth century (1890-1910) were a period of increased activity in mineral industry education. One reason for this, undoubtedly, was the rapid increase in mineral production in the decade 1880-1890; pig iron and copper production tripled; coal, lead, and zinc output more than doubled. Most of the other mineral substances followed the same general trend. Aluminum production began in 1886; petroleum output, which in 1888 was less than it was in 1882, almost doubled in the next three years. Gold alone showed no appreciable change until its discovery at Cripple Creek in 1891, followed by the Klondike in 1896, brought to boiling a public interest in minerals that had been simmering for some years previously. The first cyanide plant in the United States was erected at Bodie in 1892, and the first chlorination plant at Cripple Creek* the next year. Silver- lead smelting had already greatly developed, and the metallurgy of copper was almost transformed. The hearth area and smelting capacity of copper reverberatory furnaces more than quadrupled between 1878 and 1894; matte converters were first erected at Butte in 1884. Copper production of the United States in 1899 was 20 times that of 1872. While it was the increased technology used in mineral production that really made the field attractive for educated young men, undoubtedly they did not realize that, and were impressed mainly by the quantitative increase in output. Another factor was the increased general interest in engineering education; three times as many men took engineering degrees in the United States in 1890 as in 1880; 1892 showed almost a 56 per cent increase over 1890. HAVING had some experience in the use of gasoline-gas in a laboratory, I have been induced by frequent inquiry to present a few hints concerning it, which I hope may be of some value to those who are out of the reach of coal-gas, and who contemplate using this gas. While I will not delay to describe the method by which this gas is made, it may not be out of place to note that, unless frequent charges are put into the carburetter, the gas is variable in richness. This may be partially avoided, it is said, by repeatedly pumping from one cell in the carburetter to another. If a machine is in constant use for many months without re charging, the gas becomes rather poor for illuminating purposes ; but in this condition it may be burned in a Bunsen burner with advan tage. Could the gas be used always in this condition, no difficulty would be experienced, and it would be quite satisfactory for general laboratory purposes. Considerable annoyance, however, is experi enced whenever the machine is filled with gasoline. The Bunsen and other burners then produce a flame too smoky to be used with com fort, and, in fact, with most of them, a full supply of air; turned on at the base of the burner, will not suffice to completely burn off all the carbon. Finding it necessary to adopt some method by which I could get a flame free from unconsumed carbon, I adopted a plan which has in every way proved satisfactory. In addition to the pipe conveying the gas to the table, and ar ranged with a stopcock, there is brought to the table, within a fern inches of the gas-pipe, another pipe, conveying air direct from the pump. This pipe is also arranged with a stop-cock. The air- and gas-pipes are now connected with one pipe by a T joint; and to this last pipe is attached, by rubber tubing, the Bunsen or other burner. I have successfully used this simple system in connection with both small and large Bunsen burners, a burner with three tubes, arid a Fletcher burner; and recently I have added a new still to our equipment, and have been tising with it a Fletcher special high power burner No. 6, to which this system has been applied.
