It is desired to call the attention of young men who have had technical training and experience to the fact that their abilities can best be put at the service of the country by selecting a branch of service in which their special qualifications will be of the greatest use. The submarine force of the United States Navy requires the services, as officers on board submarines, of young men who have had technical training in mechanical and electrical engineering and who have had experience in these professions. It is intended to enroll a number of such men as provisional ensigns in the Naval Reserve Force, give then a course of instruction in deck duties at Annapolis and a course in submarine work at New London. Those who successfully pass these courses will then be sent on hoard submarines for regular duty. It is requested that any men who desire this duty and who are qualified as below outlined send their names and addresses to the Commander Submarine Force, U. S. S. Chicago, care of Postmaster, New York. Qualifications required: Desire to serve in submarines. Degree of M. E. E. E., or E. M. Two and one-half years' practical experience in profession. The mechanical properties of magnesium-alloy castings are greatly improved by grain refinement, and at present considerable attention is being paid to methods of obtaining fine-grained castings. One method of achieving this end is the use of proper melting and superheating techniques. These have been employed com-rnercially to a great extent, but no comprehensive study of the subject appears to have been published at present. Numerous investigations found in the literature include some reference to superheating techniques,1"4 and Achenbach, Nippcr and Piwowarsky,% ased principally on thermal analysis, ascribe the grain-refilling action of superheating to the influence of solid foreign particles or dissolved gases present in the melt upon the course of crystallization. The primary purpose of this paper is to present the principal facts concerning the cffect of superheating on grain size of magilesium alloys. .ittempts are also made to explain the experimental results in terms of a general hypothesis. The investigations are limited chiefly to common commercial casting alloys. In order to carry on this work, it was necessary to determine the factors influencing grain size and to develop a proper technique for the preparation of samples. Thc preliminary tests made by the author indicated that the grain size of magnesium alloys resulting from the solidification of a melt is determined by alloy composition, presence of impurities, rate of cooling during solidification, thermal history of the melt and to some extent the structure of the charge used. The rate of cooling is in turn dependent upon the mass of the melt, pouring temperature, and dimensions, properties and temperature of the mold into which the melt is poured. The final grain size of the alloys is still further modified by heat-treatment subsequent to casting. It is not within the scope of the present paper to discuss all of these factors, and it would suffice to note here that when equal amounts of magnesium alloys are prepared from the same alloying materials, melted in graphite crucibles under the same thermal conditions, then cast into graphite molds at a constant temperature, the resultant solids have the same grain size. By maintaining all other factors constant, it is thus possible to vary thermal conditions of a melt and to examine the grain size of resultant castings. 10.1-1. Relative Position of Maintenance as Compared to the Overall Mining Costs. The basic issue regarding the importance of maintenance in the modern mining industry must be faced squarely by the top manage- ment of each company before any real progress can be made in organizing a maintenance program for optimum effectiveness. Just a few decades ago the maintenance at coal mines consisted primarily of a blacksmith for sharpening picks and shoeing mules; as a result, probably less than 5%of the total mining cost went to maintenance and some 80% was operating expenses (operating labor). With each succeeding advance in equipment design towards larger, more complex, and more productive units, the pendu- lum swings the other way. As an example, haulage trucks have progressed through various stages in the past 20 years from 15-ton units to a 240-ton truck now in the "shakedown" or experimental stage. The following com- parison between 15-ton, 50-ton, and 100-ton haulage trucks clearly illus- trates this changing cost pattern in terms of percent of overall costs for running each size unit. REVIEWS on the applications of optical ellipsometry to the study of polycrystalline metal surfaces and oxidation-corrosion processes have been presented by Kruger and Hayfield, and white.' In view of the ability of this method to measure differences in film thicknesses to below 10A, ellipsometry was used to study nitrogen chromium surface reactions during the early stages of growth. Chromium specimens in the form of a vapor-deposited film on glass substrate were exposed to purified nitrogen for selected time increments at 700°F. This temperature was selected because it gave the best combination of exposure time and thickness change. Ellipsometer readings were taken immediately after exposure to determine polarizer and analyzer angles using monochromatic light at 5000A.2 After each set of readings was obtained, the specimens were exposed for an additional increment of time in nitrogen and a new set of readings taken. Film thickness was computed from LUCy's3 equation for nonabsorbing thin films. In Lucy's derivation, two equations for computing thickness were obtained. Peterson and Bashara4 have discussed the validity for using one of these equations when an independent value of the refractive index is used. The film was assumed to be Cr2N (Ref. 5) and was determined to be optically isotropic. Optical isotropy was determined by rotating the films about the surface normal and noting that the azimuth and phase difference did not change. Since Cr2N is reported to be hexagonal, it is assumed that optical isotropy results from randomly oriented grains of very small size. The thickness was computed using refractive indexes varying from 1.6 to 2.0. The maximum variation in computed thickness over this range for a given exposure was 20 pct. The data reported are based on a refractive index of 1.8. Reference readings on the metal surface were taken just prior to nitrogen exposure. No attempt was made to deoxidize or denitride the metal surface after vapor deposition, although specimens were observed to gain approximately 2A per day in air at room temperature. Twelve experimental exposures were made on a single sample over a total accumulative time of 132 min. Additional experiments over longer time intervals were made to determine the effect of heat up and cool down during and after exposure. As a result of these experiments, the thickness computed for each exposure was increased by 4A. Time profiles based on the linear law are similar to the oxidation profiles for many metals.' The rate of accumulation of the nitride film is rapid at first and slows down as the film thickness increases. The parabolic law x2 =k1t +k2 [11 gives a straight line in Fig. 1; therefore, it is concluded that the kinetic behavior is parabolic. Sey-bolt and Haman5 reported similar results for CrlN on chromium at 1000°C although the order of the thickness was much greater (10-3 cm). Analysis of thickness data based on other values of refractive index shows that the curves are shifted vertically but retain the same shape. According to Mott,7 it is expected that for thin films k2 is zero in Eq. [I]. Since the plot in Fig. 1 is linear through the origin, k2 is zero and the parabolic nature of the film growth is further indicated. The parabolic rate constant, calculated from the slope in Fig. 1, is 4.4 x 10-16 sq cm per sec. The corresponding work (+) required to bring an electron from the metal into the oxide is estimated to be 1.5 ev.7 The author thanks professor N. M. Bashara and D. W. For a number of years European investigators have used laboratory methods of predicting the probable strength of coke made from coal, and recently several investigators in the United States have reported the use of various tests for this purpose. There is at present no method accepted as standard, however, nor is there even agreement as to the general type of test that should be used. Furthermore, because the details of most of the tests have not been worked out carefully, one investigator can not hope to duplicate the work of another. The extension of coke manufacture to new localities in the United States, and the increasing need for cokes of exceptional qualities made from the most economical mixtures, made it desirable to have some simple laboratory test which will determine whether given coals, alone or blended with other coals, are more satisfactory from the standpoint of coke strenpth- than others of different cost. The work described herein has resulted in the development of a simple laboratory test which, it is believed, can be generally adopted in coal laborat,ories, and which will give concordant results even though performed by different investigators in different laboratories. The general method of predicting whether a coal or a mixture of coals will produce a strong coke, resistant to crushing and shattering, has been to correlate the known strengths of the cokes produced in commercial ovens with some measurable constituent or with some property of the coals, and then to use the relationship so found for forming an estimate of the coking strengths of coals unknown. Several such correlations have utilized the percentages of the various ultimate constituents of coal, such as the oxygen content and the hydrogen-oxygen ratio;(39)§ other correlations have involved the proportion of a, B and r com-pounds, (17,21,30c) or of "oil and solid bitumens."(16,30) Also a relationship has been traced between the coking properties of coal and the rate of change of the resistance offered to the flow of an inert gas by fine particles of the coal while being slowly heated. The response of beryl to sulfonate flotation was examined. The dependence of flotation recovery on sulfonate concentration, pH, and the absence or presence of various ions is also demonstrated. The response of quartz and feldspar to sulfonate flotation at various values of pH is given to. show the conditions necessary for selective separation. Finally, beryl was successfully concentrated from a natural ore using a technique devised from experimental observations on systems of pure minerals. With the possible exception of quartz, the flotation characteristics of silicate minerals are rather poorly understood. This is due in part to the com- plexity of the mineral systems themselves and in part to an insufficient amount of flotation data. The complexity of the systems arises from the wide range of chemical composition that the silicate minerals can assume. This is reflected in the variability of such physical properties as hardness and cleavage. Although the chemical composition of silicate minerals can vary considerably, a general grouping can be accomplished conveniently on the basis of the assemblage of SiO4 tetrahedra in all the silicates. That is, it has been shown that six basic groups can be obtained, depending on the arrangement of oxygen sharing between adjacent silicon atoms (or substituted aluminum). When all four oxygen atoms are shared, a framework structure such as quartz or feldspar is obtained. When three oxygens are shared, infinite sheets are obtained as in the micas and clays. When two oxygen atoms of the tetrahedra are shared, infinite chains are obtained, such as those in

The microstructure of TD-Ni has been examined by transmission electron microscopy in the extruded, annealed. and deformed states. The tensile properties hove been correlated with the observed microstructures and the results ore com-pared with those obtained from pure nickel. The important conclusions are that the thorin particles in TD-Ni act as strong burriers to dislocntion motion during both deformation (slip) and annealing (climb). During deformation. the dislocations tangle around the particles and a cell structure is devleloped after 10 pct or more strain. The cell size appears to be determined by the spacing of the largest particles and is about five times smaller than that in pure nickel for the same strain. The higher work-hardening rate in TD-Ni compared to nickel is probably due to the more rapid rate of dislocation multiplication in the alloy as a result of dislocation-particle interactions. The Th0,particles inhibit recrystallization and twin growh so that some strengthening may arise from the high density of small annealing twins. THE strengthening of materials due to the presence of a dispersed second phase has been the subject of considerable experimental and theoretical investigation in recent years. One of the newest dispersion-strengthened alloys to be developed is TD-Ni,1 a system of approximately 2 vol pct thoria (ThO2) dispersed in a matrix of commercially pure nickel. This material is fabricated by powder-metallurgical techniques and offers high-temperature stability and useful mechanical properties virtually to the melting point of the base metal. While the mechanical properties of this system have been investigated,2,3 there have been no reports in the literature concerning the microstruc-ture of TD-Ni and its correlation to mechanical properties. This paper describes a transmission electron microscopy investigation of the micro-structure of TD-Ni together with its mechanical properties. The results are compared with the structure and properties of pure nickel.

THE following paragraphs comprise such information as the Secretary has been able to obtain concerning the members and associates whose deaths have been reported. Further particulars or corrections of errors, and biographical data concerning deceased members or associates not already noticed in this way, are solicited. Pat Doyle was born in 1849. At the age of fifteen he entered the Civil Engineering College of Madras, India, and left it at seventeen, having achieved special distinction in mathematics, chemistry,. and geology. Before be was eighteen years old he was in charge of two of the most important Sub-Divisions in the Madras Presidency, where he had ample opportunities for acquiring a preliminary knowledge of his profession, which was his chief object in joining the Public Works Department. In 1867, his energetic measures saved the island of Seringham from disastrous inundation. At this period he began contributing to the press ; and after a varied practical experience he came into public notice again in 1876, with an article in the Colliery Guardian on Indian Mines and Mining. In 1877 he became a Fellow of the Statistical Society of London. He was a founder of the Straits Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society and a life member of the parent Society of Great- Britain and- Ireland, as well as a member of the Independent Asiatic Society of Bengal. In 1878-9 he was Chief Superintendent of the Public Works of Perak; was active in having the Associate Member Class added to the Institution of Civil Engineers; and became a member of the Society of Engineers of London and of the North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers. In 1880 he went to the Southern Colonies and held several appointments in Australia, where he became a member of the Johnsonian Club, Brisbane, and the Queensland Philo-

The term "clay" is somewhat ambiguous un¬less specifically defined, because it is used in three ways: (1) as a diverse group of fine-¬grained minerals, (2) as a rock term, and (3) as a particle-size term. Actually, most persons using the term "clay" realize that it has several meanings, and in most instances they define it. As a rock term, clay is difficult to define be¬cause of the wide variety of materials that com¬pose it; therefore, the definition must be gen¬eral. Clay is a natural earthy, fine-grained ma¬terial composed largely of a group of crystalline minerals known as the clay minerals. These minerals are hydrous silicates composed mainly of silica, alumina, and water. Several of these minerals also contain appreciable quantities of iron, alkalies, and alkaline earths. Many defini¬tions state that a clay is plastic when wet. Most clay materials do have this property, but some clays are not plastic; for example, halloysite and flint clay. As a particle-size term, clay is used for the category that includes the smallest particles. The maximum-size particles in the clay-size grade are defined differently on various grade scales, Soil investigators and mineralogists gen¬erally use 2 micrometers as the maximum size, whereas the widely used scale by Wentworth (1922) defines clay as material finer than ap¬proximately 4 micrometers. Some authorities find it convenient to use the term "clay" for any fine-grained, natural, earthy, argillaceous material (Grim, 1968). When used this way, the term includes clay, shale, or ar¬gillite, and some argillaceous soils. Even though no standard definition of the term clay is accepted by geologists, agronomists, engineers, and others, the term is generally un¬derstood by those who use it. Clay is an abun¬dant natural raw material, and it has an amaz¬ing variety of uses and properties which will be discussed in this chapter. Clays rank among the leading industrial min¬erals in both tonnages produced and total value. Their importance is indicated in Table 1, which lists the 1970, 1971, and 1972 production and values according to the U.S. Bureau of Mines (Ampian, 1972). Adequate reliable statistical data on which to summarize world production of clay are un¬available; this paragraph outlines the world re¬quirements for clay only in a very general way. According to one estimate, the world bentonite production in 1972 was 3.5 million tons (Anon., 1973a), but in the authors' opinion it was prob¬ably at least 5 million tons. The total fuller's earth produced was at least 1.5 million tons and may have been as much as 2 million tons. The total world kaolin production in 1972 was more than 10 million tons. Approximately 7 million tons of this total was produced in only two regions-the Georgia-South Carolina kaolin belt in the United States and the Cornwall re¬gion, United Kingdom. The world's 1972 out¬put of ball clay, which is also produced pri¬marily in the United States and the United Kingdom, was approximately 1.5 million tons or perhaps a little more. The total world fire clay production in 1972 was probably about one and one-half to two times and the miscellaneous clay production three times the United States production. As industrial minerals, clays are a complex group that consists of several mineral commodi¬ties, each having somewhat different mineral¬ogy, geologic occurrence, technology, and uses. THE diffusion of carbon in gamma iron plays an essential role in many metallurgical processes. In carburizing, in graphitizing, in homogenizing, in the formation of pearlite from austenite, and in other processes, migra-tion of carbon in gamma iron occurs.1,2 A full understanding of the rate at which these processes occur obviously requires a knowledge of the rate of diffusion of carbon. In carburizing, for example, the depth of carbon pentration is determined by the carbon concentration in solid solution at the surface, and by the rate of diffusion inward of the carbon. Until reliable data on the rates of diffusion of carbon are available it is unlikely that a full quantitative description of this process will be obtained. In the formation of pearlite from austenite, the segregation of carbon and alpha iron from the austenite obviously requires the diffusion of carbon; the rate at which pearlite nodules grow is evidently controlled at least in part by the rate of diffusion of carbon; it is unlikely that we shall understand the factors that determine the rate of growth unless data on rates of diffusion of carbon, and the variation of these with com-position, grain size, and temperature are available. Accordingly it was decided: (1) to determine, more accurately than hitherto, the diffusion coefficients of carbon in austenite over a wide temperature and a wide concentration range, (2) to study the influence of grain size and impurities on this diffusion coefficient, and (3) to study the effect of manganese and nickel on the rate of diffusion of carbon in the austenite of manganese and nickel steels, respectively; the influence of carbon on the rate of diffusion of manganese and of nickel will be made the subject of later papers. THE constantly increasing consumption of Portland cement in the State makes the above subject of partlcular interest at this time. The increasing demand is due to the rapid settling of the country and the fact that new uses are being found frequently for the above named commercial article. The industry is one that is bound to grow as the population increases, and this being the case, it may be well ,it this time to consider briefly- the matter of the chemical and physical com-position of proper raw materials. A cement mixture is one that contains approximately 75 per cent. carbonate of lime, 15 per cent. Silica, and 5 to 7 per cent. alumina, and iron oxides; the other elements being magnesium carbonate and small quantities of the rarer elements general associated with limestone deposits. It call be readily seen from the above composition that it is possible to build up this mixture from a number of different materials. First.-A rock high in carbonate of lime can be mixed with clay or shale in such proportions as to bring about the desired composition ; the chief difficulty in the building up of such a mixture is that it is hard to find a clay or shale in which the silica-alumina, ratio lies .between 4 to 1 and 3 to 1 and at the same time shows physical characteristics which will make certain its adaptability to the practical manufacture of Portland cement. Very often clays or shales are found which are right chemically but contain large quantities of grit or free silica. Such clays or shale must be ground to extreme fineness in the mixture in order to make the silica and alumina combine with the lime when the mixture is burned. On the other hand, clays or shales are often found that have the proper physical characteristics but in which the amount of alumina, is too great.

IN AS MUCH as our Institute, by tradition, never adopts any official view of matters upon which difference of opinion exists, it may be taken for granted that the duty of its Production Control Committee does' not embrace the formulation of any general policy on that much-discussed subject. During the first years of its existence the Committee confined its activities to making arrangements for an annual general session at which the broader aspects of the general problem were discussed by men both within and outside the mineral industry. These general sessions, although interesting, did not indicate any definite path of progress, so during the last year the Committee has held a number of luncheon meetings at which the members might discuss in detail problems existing in the specific industries with which they are most closely acquainted, in the hope that discussions dealing with conditions rather than theories might result in the bringing to light of some general truths. Most of these truths have been fairly obvious from the beginning but they are of such basic importance that a periodic restatement of them seems worth while,

It was voted that the sum of $857.61, or so much of it as may be necessary, be advanced to the Land Fund from the general funds of the Institute, in anticipation of the collection of unpaid installments of subscriptions to the Land Fund; and that the Treasurer be instructed to pay to Andrew Carnegie at the present. time the sum of $2,500 on account of the Land Fund indebtedness.

Development during 1942 led to the discovery of 26 new fields in the Texas Gulf Coast, as compared with 27 during 1941. Of these, 19 are classed as oil fields, 4 distillate fields, and 3 gas fields. Production from the new fields amounted to 614,467 bbl. to October 1942. Producing Sections.—Discoveries in I942, compared with the previous two years, classified by producing formations, are shown in the following table: It is interesting to note the increase in Wilcox discoveries due to the extensive geophysical campaign that has been con. ducted since 1940. Drilling.—During the year 688 wells were drilled, of which 574 produced oil or gas and 114 were dry. This represents a considerable decline in activity over the previous year, when 1405 wells were drilled in the area, of which 1081 were producers and 324 failures. Jackson County continued to hold the lead, with 222 wells completed. Production.—-Despite curtailed drilling, production amounted to 118,009,451 bbl. for 1942, indicating a slight increase over the 113,726,893 bbl. produced during 1941. The statistics in Tables I and 2 include condensate and distillate as oil production, because many Gulf Coast fields produce oils with a wide variation of specific gravities, all of which are commingled in pipe lines. Table 3 shows by counties most of the activities referred to. The number of wells drilled includes only field wells; not wildcats. Outstanding Fields of 1942 The Texas Gulf Coast covered in this report has 270 more or less active oil and gas fields, including the new discoveries of 1942. Of these the most outstanding from the standpoint of production are listed in Table 4. Each of these fields produced one million barrels or more during 1942. Some of the fields where new extensions are occasionally referred to as separate fields, such as West Columbia and New West Columbia, or Thompson and South Thompson, are combined to give a more accurate outline. Two interesting facts may be noted from this list of some 26 oil fields: (I) that the Lolita field, Jackson County, is the only discovery since 1938 to produce more than one million barrels annually, although there have been 79 discoveries since Jan. I, 1940; (2) that 20 of these 26 fields produce from the Frio. New Fields ALief, Harris County.—Pure Oil Company's No. I Mike Albanese was drilled to 8637 ft. in Cook Mountain shale. IN a laboratory devoted to the furtherance of the science of communication, the breadth and variety of the problems encountered are challenging to a metallurgist. In my own long association with the Bell Telephone Laboratories, our metallurgical group has dealt with a vast number of alloys, both ferrous and nonferrous, and with many materials in the border range of metallic properties., The objectives of our design engineers embrace every phase of telephony, and the properties they desire in metals are generally unusual, frequently unique, and often conflicting. Commercial alloys have not always been available with properties to meet a special requirement in the telephone plant, and many alloys have had, therefore, to be custom-made. Anyone who has had the opportunity to observe the results of tests of all types on numerous such alloys, both commercially and specially produced, or who has taken part in the development of an alloy of some necessary, but new or unusual combination of properties, could not fail to be impressed by the frequency with which a desired goal has been reached or adequately approached through the presence of decimal quantities of alloying elements. Nor could One fail to be struck by the occasions when, conversely, of a minute amount Of impurity element has rendered an alloy useful. It is no exaggeration to state that the content be- hind the decimal point often spells success or fail-ure, and the critical content is sometimes far to the right of the decimal point as I shall later illustrate. The great effects of small additions have long been recognized and have, in fact, been described by many investigators. The importance of the minute, however, cannot be overemphasized. Therefore, in this discussion, I propose to illustrate for you some of the startling instances, drawn primarily from our own experiences, wherein small, even vanishingly small, proportions of stranger elements in otherwise common aggregates have com-pletely changed the customary pattern of behavior. No one property has a monopoly as to being dis-proportionately affected by minor elements. Nearly all properties are affected, but there is time here to include only a selected few. I have chosen, there-fore, three of general interest: strength, magnetic, and electrical properties. I shall inquire into both the mechanisms and consequences of these disproportionate effects and try to share with you the fascination and challenge of this field. Strength Properties of Lead and Lead Alloys To illustrate the effect of the minute on strength properties I have selected lead and its alloys, with which we have worked extensively for many years. Lead has the advantages of being available in quantity in a state of high purity and of being fairly easy to melt and fabricate without contamination to any extent detectable by the spectrograph.
