AS part of a program to investigate the diffusive properties of dilute ternary austenites we have made a determination of the effect of chromium on the activity of carbon in ? iron. Samples of pure iron and Fe-Cr alloys were simultaneously equilibrated at 1000°C with atmospheres of controlled CO/CO2 ratio following the procedures of Darken and Gurry 1 and smith.' The 0.020 in. thick samples were analysed for carbon by microcombustion analyses3 to yield a set of isoacti-vity curves. The latter were converted to activity coefficient (standard state at infinite dilution) plots by combination with Smith's data2 for the activity of carbon in pure iron. Table I shows the compositions of the base alloys used while Fig. 1 shows the experimental results superimposed on a set of curves generated by the relation In?C=6.9NC- 10.7 Ne In the notation of wagner4 the interaction parameter is the second coefficient on the right, Sgr = - 10.7 This can be compared with a rather inaccurate value deduced from the transient equilibrium diffusion data of Kirkaldy et al.' as The authors are indebted to the American Iron and Steel Institute for financial support. (written discussion *).-This paper is particularly interesting to me, because it gives data on a much mooted question, viz., the serviceability of Le Chatelier (platinum-platinum-rhodium) thermocouples under severe industrial conditions. It has always been supposed that platinum-platinum-rhodium thermo-couples, used at high temperatures under strong reducing conditions, would not give long service and were subject to rapid volatilization. The fact, however, that the carefully kept records indicate that a little more than 3 gm. out of more than 830 gm. was lost over this considerable period, shows what kind of service can -be obtained from platinum-platinum-rhodium thermocouples,, when properly installed, and well cared for. While the writer has no actual figures on the loss of weight, etc. of platinum-platinum-rhodium thermocouples under service, he was told, by the man in charge of pyrometers at a large industrial plant in which over 400 platinum-platinum-rhodium thermocouples were installed in furnaces doing various kinds of heat-treating work, that the average maintenance cost, for materials alone, including platinum-platinum-rhodium wires and protecting tubes, was 27 c. per furnace, per month:

The fact that cobalt diffuses in silver at a much slower rate in a region near a free surface than in bulk material has been demonstrated in a variety of experiments. Various possible mechanisms of this near-surface effect (NSE) are examined in light of experimental evidences. The tendency for surface segregation of some solute atoms appears to be a likely mechanism to explain the effect. UNIDIRECTIONAL and isothermal diffusion from a plane source of radioactive tracer into an isotropic, homogeneous medium follows the Gaussian solution to Fick's second law, or: where A(x,t) is the position and time-dependent concentration of the diffusing species, M is the quantity of diffusant per unit area initially at x = 0, and D is the diffusion coefficient. For a given time, say t = tl, one can easily see that: d In Aixji)_____1_ r2] d(x2) 4Dti Thus, if diffusion data obtained by serial sectioning are plotted as In A(x,tl) vs x2, the diffusion coefficient is obtained from Eq. [2]. The ideal behavior seldom is observed in real systems. Deviations from ideality generally occur either at small or large values of penetration distance. The overall picture is shown schematically in Fig. 1 where Regions I, 11, and 111 are due, respectively, to some near-surface effect or effects (NSE), volume diffusion, and short-circuiting effects. For different systems and conditions of specimen preparation and analysis, the relative importance of Regions I, 11, and I11 may be drastically different. Region I is completely absent in many systems and there is no NSE. In others, however, there may be considerable difficulty in determination of volume diffusion coefficients due to the overshadowing influences of Region I. Such is particularly true when indirect techniques such as the surface concentration decrease or the Gruzin method' are used to find D. In this paper several experiments which had as their goal a better understanding of near-surface effects are reported. Specifically, it is well-known that unusual penetration behavior results for the diffusion of several impurities in ilver- and that considerable controversy exists with regard to interpretation of the published diffusion data. We chose to examine those unusual results which occur for cobalt diffusion in monocrystalline silver395 primarily because knowledge of experimental procedures and materials were readily available. Both radioactive co60 and co5' could be utilized to offer a wide range of available concentration of the diffusing species. Experiments were also performed on the diffusion of AgnO in silver. They gave base-line data for the system—both for technique evaluation and for examination of the vacancy distribution near the surface. I) PROCEDURES Cylindrical-shaped specimens 1.25 cm diam and 1 to 1.25 cm long were cut from 99.999 pct Ag single crystals obtained from Monocrystals Co., Cleveland. One end surface of each specimen was polished flat and etched with a mixture of 20 ml saturated Cr03 solu-tion-20 ml H20-3 ml concentrated HC1. Radioactive tracer (co60 or co5' or Ag'lO, each having a radio-chemical purity of greater than 99 pct) was deposited onto the prepared surface either dropwise with evaporation to dryness of the solution containing the tracer (0.5 N HC1 solution for the co60 and co5' and 0.6 N HNO3 solution for the A"'), by electroplating, or by evaporation from a tantalum or tungsten filament in an evacuated bell jar. The amount of deposited cobalt was varied from many atomic layers of cobalt containing the co60 to approximately one co5' atom per lo6 surface atoms of silver. This large variation in amount of deposited cobalt yielded information about both the influence of a thick-source layer of tracer and solubility effects on the NSE. Such variations were possible because of the large differences in half-lives,

Industrial minerals are the Cinderella of the mining I industry. Often considered as just dirt by traditional hard-rock miners and oil drillers, these products nonetheless comprise the second largest segment of the industry and the fastest-growing one. With annual sales of $5.7 billion, industrial minerals make up 22% of the dollar value of U.S. mineral consumption. By contrast, metals account for only 11%. Fuels, of course, are dominant, representing 67%. The dollar values of production and consumption for the three segments of the industry in 1968 are shown in Table I. The growth rate of industrial minerals is shown in Table II. From 1953-1968, the current-dollar value of all U.S. mineral production increased at the average annual rate of 3.8% while that of the gross national product increased at 5.9%. Industrial minerals are the only segment of the mining industry that approached the growth of the overall economy in this period, with production values increasing 5.1% a year and apparent-consumption values 5.6% These data, expressed in current dollars, include the effects of inflation. The growth in U.S. industrial minerals production is even more striking when expressed in indexes of physical production. As shown in Table III, production of all U.S. industries increased by 4.1% a year from 1953 to 1968. The growth in production of stone and earth minerals just matched this figure. By contrast, the average annual increase for oil and gas was 2.2%: for metals, 1.6% : and for coal, only 0.6 %.

I WISH to urge on this Committee the task of evaluating mining geology. -My motive is as follows: It, is a. duty of the Institute from time to5 time, to establish the social perspective of the professions grouped within it, not simply to promote their use, but to determine with engineering definiteness their true powers and functions. This becomes the delegated duty, therefore, of this committee in respect to geology. Be- cause my own subject is mining, I shall confine my remarks to mining geology. But I believe that the evaluation should be made to include all of that geology termed economic. The perspective for such evaluation is shown in the nature of the public support given to geology. The federal Geological Survey, the leading organization on the economic side, is actuated by the zeal of a small group of devoted professionals who consider its work valuable, ' It proceeds, however, on a starvation ration of appropriations, and that implies that neither the corporations, the voters nor the vote getters consider it important. Altogether, in' the public consciousness, geology is negligible. That, at the same moment, .the profession should act with full confidence, while everyone else should act' with opposite motives, is not fitting. For us, as a committee, to remain incurious regarding such a disparity of beliefs is quite impossible.

Spurred on by the very high demands for new crude supplies resulting from World War 11, the oil men of Kansas strained every effort in 1943 to find as many new pools as possible. In all, 1761 test wells were drilled, ,of which 895 were successful in finding new oil supplies and 32 in finding new gas supplies. The total number of wildcat wells drilled in Kansas was 577, including the so-called "extension wildcats," which are located less than 2 miles from production. As a result of the very determined effort to find new oil reserves, 49 of the wildcat test wells found new oil pools in western Kansas and 7 found new oil pools in eastern Kansas. There were 289 rank wildcat tests, and among these 28 were successful ventures. They are responsible for 26 of the new oil pools recorded for the year and 2 of the new gas pools recorded. The ratio of dry holes to producing wells among such rank wildcats is thus approximately 10 to I (289 dry and 28 good). This compares with a ratio of II: I in 1942 and 6:1 in 1941; the same in 1940 and 5:Iin 1939. With nearly all wells flowing to their maximum economic capacity, the total production for Kansas during 1943 reached a new high; that is, 107,700,000 bbl., compared with 97,000,000 during the previous year. Similarly, the amount of gas sold during 1943 made a new high point on the production curve. The total amount was 122 billion cubic feet, compared with about 98 1/2 billion cubic feet for the year previous. As usual, the large Hugoton field of south- western Kansas accounted for approximately half of the total gas production. Highlights of the Year Despite the fact that 56 new pools were found in Kansas during 1943, it must be admitted that the future reserves of the state have not been increased greatly. Most of the new pools seem to be of minor value, although it is admittedly impossible to gauge the future production of any pool in Kansas with any exactitude. Judging by the later performance of some of the pools found in 1942 and in 1941, less than five of the new pools are likely to make any great contribution to the state's future oil reserves. Taking up the counties of Kansas in alphabetical order, the following statements summarize the highlights of the year. In Graham County, the Morel pool was extended to the southeast and this pool now promises to become one of the important pools of western Kansas. Several of the older wells have already contributed more than I000,000 bbl. of oil, and such a figure is considered very satisfactory in Kansas. In McPherson County, important new reserves were found by persistent drilling in township 17 S., R. I. W., the most northeastern township of the county. Many new wells in older pools and discovery wells in new pools make this region look promising. The Lindsborg pool, which had a sensational revival during 1942, was also extended in a number of directions and has now become a rather large producing area with a fairly high future potential capacity.

FROM 1870 to date, the coal production of Utah has been somewhat less than 85,000,000 tons. There have been at least three major disasters with total fatalities about 380; or approximately. 4.4 persons killed by mine explosions per million tons produced, a record that is decidedly bad. Even during the periods when there have been no disasters, such as the years 1914 to 1920, inclusive, the fatalities .in ordinary working ran about 5.4 per million tons produced, against 3.7 per, million tons. for the whole United States for the same years. The five-year period following the war, 1918 to 1922 inclusive, showed 4.7 fatalities per million tons, hence the fatality record in the coal mines of Utah has uniformly been in excess of the average of the coal mines of the entire country. Notwithstanding this poor record, Utah has given to the coal-mining world many excellent safety methods and practices and the Utah. coal mines in general take greater measures toward safe mining than do the coal mines of any other State; if practices and methods allowed and pursued in coal mines of other States were tried in Utah coal mines, there would be a succession of disasters. Utah's principal producing coal mines, operated by about eighteen companies and numbering less than forty, have comparatively thick seams. Very little coal under 5 ft. thick is being worked and practically none under 4 ft.; much, if not most, of the coal comes from seams in excess of 8 ft., some running as high as 30 ft. In thick seams in which coal is left on floor and roof, any dust found or made is entirely combustible. In addition, the thick seams induce the use of large capacity cars, handling which in rooms and other workings on fairly heavy grades (up to 10 or .12 per cent.) tends to cause haulage accidents. The thick seams give high ribs and roof, in which it is difficult to prevent slabs of coal or rock from dropping on workers and also difficult to keep free of gas and of coal dust. The coal is high volatile, running usually over 40 per cent and in some instances nearly to 50 per cent; hence is highly flammable. Most of the coals have very high resin content, the resin usually being in dust form, hence almost as highly flammable as black powder. THE discussion of this topic at the Open-hearth Conference at Detroit on Nov. 3, 1927, was opened by statements of the general principles involved, made by manufacturers of molds. Because of their general interest they are printed below. WILLIAM HAIL RAMAGE,* Hubbard, Ohio.-I did not come prepared to read a paper, thinking. the most I would be called upon to do would be to make a few, remarks by way of discussion. A number of our friends have pre-viously asked questions. similar to this which really does not permit a direct "yes" or "no" answer. If I may he pardoned for so doing, I believe it advisable to discuss rather what we consider the principal factors which in-fluence mold life. I think possibly a little undue weight has been given to the subject of the analysis of the metal. For the last eight years we have spent a lot of time, effort, and money investigating this very problem from a chemical, physical and microscopic standpoint. We have had the benefit of complete records and history of over 100,000 molds in service at a variety of plants and over long periods of time. Obviously, I cannot be so specific that I should divulge information that is really a trade secret. In our opinion the principal factors influencing mold life are: (1) design of the mold; (2) process of manu-facture, including workmanship; (3) care in the steel plant or what might be termed "the use or abuse" in the steel plant; (4) the analysis of the iron and the physical con-dition of it. Under normal conditions these factors are of importance in the order named, although in specific cases they might be rearranged in any order you choose. For instance, the best mold made can be destroyed in one or two pours by subjecting it to certain conditions which are occasion-ally met in steel plant practice. Obviously, in that case, nothing else matters but that one item. On the other hand, I have seen molds made of such a terrible design that it was a foregone conclusion it would have to be broken after the second pour of the ingot to get it out. In that case, nothing but design mattered. As to the effect of process of manufacture, let me cite a case. Some years ago there were two batches of molds sent to a certain company. They were the same sized molds, used under the same conditions and in the same kind of service. There were, 20 molds in each batch. The second batch sent gave ten times the life of the first batch. It is true that the design was changed a little, but not very much, and it was not. a bad mold to begin with. It is possible that the iron may have been better in the second consignment but not very much. In my opinion, it is con-servative to say that of the 900 per cent improvement in life, 5 per cent was probably due to better iron, 25 per cent to better design and the remaining 870 per cent to process of manufacture and workmanship.

The Carlin gold deposit is located in northeastern Nevada about thirty-five miles by road from the town of Elko. Following the staking of six square miles 'of ground, a drilling program outlined a fine ore body mineable by open pitting. The resulting mine turned out to be the largest open-pit gold operation in the world, until the Rosario Pueblo Viejo operation was started in 1975. Because of the high profitability forecast at the then $35 gold price, construction of a 2000 stpd mill was commenced on a crash program and was completed for Newmont Mining Corporation by Bechtel Corporation in ten months. Production was started in early 1965. The gold mineralization occurs in marine-type sediments, chiefly silt- stones and limey shales, and the ore characteristics make for a difficult materials-handling problem. At 5% to 6% moisture the ore is dusty during crushing, but even a light rain or snowfall virtually turns the material into a slurry. Crushing this sticky ore below 314 in. (19 mm) in the dry season and 1 in. (25.4 m) during the winter is extremely difficult and leads to problems with conveyors, chutes, and fine ore storage. The initial flowsheet for Carlin's crushing plant used a 5 ft by 22 ft (1.52 m by 6. 7 m) vibrating feeder -grizzly under the 60 -ton dump pocket for feeding the 42 in. by 48 in. (1067 mm by 1220 mm) single toggle jaw crusher and a 5 ½ ft (1.52 m) standard cone crusher in closed circuit with a 6 ft by 12 ft (1.83 m by 3.66 m) vibrating double - deck screen. Because continual packing of fines in the vibrating feeder pan would cause frequent plant shut-downs to remove the fines with jack hammers, the decision was made to replace the vibrating unit with an apron feeder and stationary grizzly ahead of the jaw crusher. A dribble belt was also installed under the apron feeder. This installation has greatly improved the feeding of the pit run ore to the .primary jaw crusher. Mining at Carlin is done by a 5 yd shovel and 7 ½ and 10 yd front-end loaders, and ore transport is by several sizes of trucks from 30 to 75 tons capacity. These pit haulage trucks dump onto stockpiles adjacent to the primary crusher. Ore is then fed to the dump hopper by front- end loaders only when the crushing plant is operating. This extra handling procedure is necessary because plant delays caused by problems with wet ore in the secondary crusher resulted in the ore setting up or packing in the dump pocket. His face wreathed in smiles, J. Richard Lucas, Chairman of the Keynote Session, conceded that "the papers appeared to have been of some interest." This was a modest description of the opening day of technical sessions at the SME Fall Meeting and Exhibition, October 13 to 15, in Tampa, Fla. The auditorium had capacity for 800 spectators and there was hardly a vacant seat visible. The topic, Resource Development of the Fertilizer Minerals, was covered in four authoritative papers. H. S. Ten Eyck set the stage. Resources are always viewed in relation to future requirements, and these depend largely on population. If the population trend continues, the world's 3.3 billion people will increase to 6.7 billion people by the year 2000. About 70% of this increased population will be in developing areas which are not capable of supplying sufficient food and fiber for their needs. Fertilizer is a means of bridging the crop shortage. Projections of fertilizer requirements by 1970 are from 53 million to 67.5 million long tons of plant nutrient which compares with 1964 consumption of 37.7 million tons. Looking ahead to 1980, the growth continues with an estimated demand of 80 million to 113 million tons combined of N P and K.

In September, 1975, production was begun at the new milling facility of ASARCO Incorporated, the Young Mill. The mill is located adjacent to the Young Mine 35 km (22 miles) east of Knoxville, Tennessee. The Young Mill replaced the obsolete Mascot Mill which had been operating since 1913. The basic flow sheet of Mascot was retained for the construction of the Young Mill, with a 20% increase in capacity included in the design. The Young Mill is capable of processing 7710 - t/d (8500 stpd) of crude ore from three underground mines (Young, Immel and Coy) yielding 300 - t/d (330 stpd) of 63% zinc concentrate. The Young Mill is unique in that 92.5% of the ore milled is recovered as saleable products, including zinc concentrate, construction aggregate, sand and agricultural limestone. Processing at the Young Mill is divided into five basic stages: two-stage crushing, heavy media separation, grinding-flotation, concentrate filtering and drying, and limestone by-products recovery. The ore bodies are located in the Knox formation, which consists of primary dolomite, secondary dolomite and limestone with silicas in the form of chert and jasperoid. The zinc mineralization occurs as an exceptionally pure sphalerite. The ore contains an occasional abundance of pyrite and traces of fluorite and barite. TWO STAGE CRUSHING Ore enters the crushing section from two points. The Young Mine ore is hoisted into a 816 ton (900 st) bin which feeds a 1.52m (60 in) conveyor via a 1.52 m (60 in) vibrating feeder. The Immel ore is trucked 10 km (6 miles) by an independent contractor and weighed on automatic recording truck scales at the entrance to the property.

International developments affecting foreign in- vestments in 1960-61 were many, varying from region to region and differing with respect to various categories of investments. Total value of U.S. private investment abroad in 1960 was approximately $32.7 billion, an increase of $2.9 billion over 1959. Production and distribution of mineral resources was, by a sizeable margin, the most important function of American capital working in foreign countries in 1960. Investment in mining or petroleum interests totaled approximately $14 billion, or 42% of all direct foreign investment. In- vestments by industry for 1960 were as follows: Petroleum-10.9 billions, Mining-3.0 billions, Manufacturing-11.2 billions, Utilities-2.5 billions, other-5.1 billions. American investors found Canada and Latin America to be most desirable in 1960 with the greatest percentage of American capital in all areas centered in the petroleum and mining industries. The areal breakdown of total American investments is as follows: Canada-$11.2 billions, Latin America-$8.4 billions, Western Europe-$6.6 billions, Middle East-$1.2 billions, Far East-$1.2 billions, Africa-$.9 billions, other areas-$3.2 billions.

The carbides of approximate composition and Mn have been studied using X-ray diffraction techniques. Those carbides of the type (Fe,Aln)zC ave isostructural with cementite. The cell pararmeters a and c have minimum values at approximately 10 at. pd substitution of manganese for iron; no satisfactory explanation has yet been found for this phenomenon. The carbide fFeMn4)C has a monoclinic unit cell whose dimensions are close to those of ,11,15Cz A neu-troip-dij~ractiot~ study of (F'eAlrz4)C~ reveals that, like MnsCZ, it is isostructural with Pd5Bz. The iron and manganese atoms occupy the palladium atom sites, while the carbon atoms were found to have the same atomic coordinates as the hovon atoms. A neutrorr-diffraction study of indicates that the carbon-atom positions are very close to those occupied in (Fez.,ll/lr~,.3)C. In both carbides studied, tlre iron and manganese atomzs were found to be essentially randomly distributed, although, in the case of (Fe,.811fn1.2)C, it is possible that there may be a slight preference of manganese atoms for- the general (d) positions and a corresponding slight preference of iron atoms for the special (c) positions. It has been found that a complete range of solid solution exists between Fe3C and Mn3C at 1050°C,I although Mn3C becomes unstable when the temperature is reduced to 95O0C,' and can only be retained by rapid quenching. It is also known that a complete range of solid solution exists from Fe5Cz to M~SC~,~ although the stability range of carbides of the type (Fe,Mn)sCz as a function of the relative proportions of iron and manganese is not known. X-ray examinations of Oh-man's carbide3 and Spiegeleisenkristall,~ which have the approximate compositions (Fe3.67Mnl.33)C2 and (Fe3-,Mn,)C, where x lies between 0.4 and 1, respectively, have been made. The following carbides have also been studied: ] The lattice parameters determined during these investigations are listed in Table I. It is seen that carbides of the type (Fe,Mn)sCz have a monoclinic unit cell while carbides of the type (Fe,Mn)3C have an orthorhombic unit cell. It is evident that the variation of lattice parameters with manganese content is not linear for carbides of the type (Fe,Mn)3C. The coordinates of the atoms in (Fe2.7Mno.3)C have recently been determined by single-crystal analysis., The fractional atomic coordinates have been shown by Fasiska and jeffrey to be in good agreement withj those deduced from an earlier analysis of Fe3C by Lipson and etch.' However, it was impossible to determine whether iron and manganese atoms occupied ordered positions because of the small difference between the atomic scattering factors of iron and manganese. The atomic positions in Mn5Cz (Refs. 8 and 9) and Fe5C2 (Refs. 7 and 8) have been obtained only by comparisons made with the isostructural compounds P~SB~.' Since X-ray diffraction techniques were used in these investigations, accurate positioning of the carbon atoms, which have a low atomic scattering factor, was difficult. No attempt has been made to determine the atomic positions in the other carbides previously studied. It was felt that an investigation of the lattice parameters of a number of intermediate carbides of the types (Fe,Mn)sCZ and (Fe,Mn)& would be of interest. It seemed likely that a neutron-diffract ion study of such carbides would indicate whether ordering occurred between the iron and manganese atoms because of the large difference between the neutron-scattering cross sections of iron and manganese. It also seemed probable that such an investigation would provide a determination of the atomic coordinates of the carbon atoms. I) EXPERIMENTAL DETAILS Specimens, each weighing approximately 20 g, were carefully prepared according to the following proportions: The components were 500-mesh powders of 99.995 pct purity iron and spectroscopically pure carbon and a 200-mesh powder of 99.995 pct purity manganese. The component powders were intimately mixed by prolonged shaking, then each specimen was inserted into a spot-welded cylindrical container of tantalum foil, whose end was closed but not sealed. Each specimen in its envelope was then sintered at 1050° C for 24 hr in a thin-walled evacuated quartz capsule, such a time having been previously found sufficient for equilibrium to be attained.' Each specimen was then quenched in order to attempt to retain the high-temperature phase, as the literature indicates that transformations may occur on cooling. Debye-Scherrer X-ray photographs were taken of each specimen using a 114.6-mm-diam camera, Fig. 1, patterns 2 to 6. The exposure time was 6 hr using filtered iron radiation at a tube voltage of 40 kv and a tube current of 12 ma.

Results and experimental procedures are presented covering a preliminary laboratory investigation of the compaction of reservoir rocks and its effect on porosity and permeability. "Egective" compressibility was measured by subjecting core material to an overburden load and reducing pore pressure. Preliminary results showed relatively high effective compressibilities which varied from 1.8 X 10-' pore volume/pore volume /lb / in.~ for limestones to 7.7 X 10-6 pore volume/pore volume/lb/in.' and even higher for sandstone reservoirs conmining large amounts of fine clay material. It appeared from the initiol results that the effective compressibility of the material could not be correlated directly with porosity and that other factors, such as the amount of clay material present might have to be taken into account. The work to date has indicated that effective compressibility factors will have to be measured for the particular reservoirs heing studied. Oil permeability of core materid was measured under various effective overburden loads from 0 to 8,000 psi. It has been found than reduction of permeability in clean sands was relatively small and the results agreed with published data. For sandstones containing large amounts of clay, preliminary tests indicated very large reductions in permeability with increasing effective overburden pressures. It is planned to continue laboratory work on this phase because of its importance in low-permeability reservoirs. INTRODUCTION During the past few years increasing interest has been shown in the differences obtained between conventional laboratory measurements on cores at atmospheric pressure and those when reservoir conditions are simulated. Since these data are used as the basis for calculations and the prediction of reservoir behavior, their evaluation under reservoir conditions is most important. The effect of the compressibility of the rock upon the reservoir behavior, as fluid pressure declines, is an important subject which has been insufficiently studied. The total pressure on any plane through a reservoir is the result of the grain-to-grain rock pressure due to the overburden and the pressure of the interstitial fluid on the plane. As reservoir fluid pressure declines, the net load on the rock phase must increase, and the result is the compaction of the rock structure which produces a decrease in pore volume. Simultaneously, the rock grains expand into the pore space as the fluid pressure declines. The result of these two effects is defined as the effective compressibility of the rock and is expressed in units of pore volume/original pore volume/psi. Work was started by Imperial in 1954 on the effects of pressure on the porosity of reservoir rock. These studies established effective compressibility factors for some limestones and dolomites. Since that time effective compressibilities have been obtained for other Canadian and some U. S. reservoir rocks. In conjunction with the study of porosity, an investigation has also been initiated to determine the effects of pressure on permeability. One outcrop and several reservoir sandstone cores have been tested to date. ROCK COMPRESSIBILITY Apparatus anD Procedure A diagram of the apparatus used in these studies is shown in Fig. 1. The equipment was constructed so that a uniform pressure, equivalent to the reservoir overburden, could be applied by the oil pump and transmitted on all sides of the core through the Lucite sheath. The sample was completely saturated by circulating brine through the mounted core. Pressure in
