This document describes the direction and progress of the Bureau of Mines Oil Shale Mining Environmental Research Program as of January 31, 1979. It is aimed at focusing the Bureau's role in environmental research supporting oil shale development with respect to the activities of other involved government agencies and private industry. Environmental considerations in oil shale extraction, such as ecological disturbances, health and safety hazards, waste management, and socioeconomic impacts, are discussed along with the type of research known to be planned by organizations to ameliorate these problems.

The rate of the steam-carbon reaction, which is of fundamental importance to coal gasification, was determined by passing steam over graphite specimens suspended in an electrically heated tube. The measurements were made at 1,900° to 2,400° F. and at steam-feed rates of 0.1 to 2.0 moles of steam per mole of carbon per minute. At the maximum steam-feed rate, the reaction rate of carbon ranged from 0.4 percent per minute at 1,900° F. to 7 percent per minute at 2,400° F. Up to about 2,200° F., the steam-feed rate had only a slight effect; above this temperature, it limited the reaction velocity when the final mole fraction of steam in the reaction products was much less than 1.

The Modified Zincex® Process, developed by Técnicas Reunidas, is highly flexible dealing with a wide range of pregnant leach solutions. No matter if those solutions are produced from primary or secondary raw materials, and/or are based on conventional leaching, pressure leaching, heap leaching or bio leaching the result is always high-purity zinc product. The zinc solvent extraction unit within the process is a very effective barrier for impurities and a buffer for the composition of the pregnant liquor. This unit achieves an extremely pure aqueous extract that can be converted into different final products. All of them are characterized by fulfilling the highest purity standards. Also, there is the possibility to adapt the global process to a wide range of pregnant liquor compositions and various production capacities up to a zinc production limit over 150 000 t/a with a single solvent extraction plant.

The mechanization of hard rock underground mines offers a large potential for reducing cost, improving efficiency, and increasing profitability. However, in spite of serious efforts by quite a number of equipment developers and mining company initiatives, the industry has achieved little real progress. The task is difficult and the blasting alternative to mechanical excavation is an effective and well-developed method, which continues to improve in spite of its inherent limitations. A large number of machines have been built and tried. Only a few developments have succeeded to make a major impact on underground hard rock mining. It is certain that hard rock mines would be laid out and designed quite differently if the mining engineers knew they had available continuous mechanical excavation machines. In the absence of the machines, mines will be designed for excavation by traditional methods. It is not easy to utilize mechanical excavation in a mine which is designed to operate with normal drill and blast excavation. This is certainly an impediment to machine development. But what if an ore body cannot be mined conventionally, simply because the mining company cannot get permits to satisfy the ever increasing strict EIS requirements of the general public and governmental agencies? This may provide the incentive necessary to develop the equipment that will be needed by a new mining method that will have almost no impact on the environment.

The Archaeozoic Willyama Complex at Broken Hill has suffered several periods of deformation and metamorphism. New structural and petrological information together with that available from the literature gives a picture of the metamorphic evolution of the Barrier Ranges. Several epochs of metamorphism are recognized, and potassium-argon dating of minerals has been applied with limited success to the resolution of these epochs.INTRODUCTIONAdvancements in the mineral industry at Broken Hill over the past eighty years have been accompanied by a continual striving towards increased understanding of both the geological history of the Barrier Ranges and the environment of the Broken Hill ore deposits. However, although many detailed studies of selected localities and particular-aspects of Broken Hill geology have been carried out recently, the regional geology of the Barrier Ranges as a whole has received little attention from a petrological viewpoint since the pioneer investigations of Mawson (1912) and Browne (1922). There still remains a great need for regional surveys combining field studies of the habits, structures and outcrop relationships of the various rock types with laboratory investigations of their chemistry, mineralogy and microscopic ,fabrics. Recording observations arising from three brief visits to the Broken Hill area during 1959 and 1963 may stimulate further surveys.During one of these visits, the generosity of the Zinc Corporation Limited in providing field transport and geological guidance enabled the writer to collect material and study field relationships and appearance of the various rock types at numerous localities covering most of the Willyama outcrop. The rapid rise of industrial Los Angeles to international prominence has been accompanied by the natural corollary - a record influx of population - together with greatly increased production and fabrication of steel and nonferrous and light metals; industrial mineral processing; and high consumption of fuel oil, gasoline, and chemicals. These have resulted in the release of hundreds of tons of metallurgical and mineral dusts, fumes, and gases into the atmosphere daily. Los Angeles County, intrinsically, is no worse than other industrial centers in respect to the generation of atmospheric contamination. It is, in fact, more fortunate in that no coal is used, and it has no great primary metallurgical industries comparable to those of Chicago and Pittsburgh. Meteorologic and topographic peculiarities of the area, however, which result in poor drainage of the polluted air away from the Los Angeles Basin, serve periodically to greatly increase the intensity and frequency of industrial smog visitations. This combination of intense industrialization, population influx, climate, and topography has made mandatory control of air pollution necessary. The nonferrous pyrometallurgical industry of Los Angeles has three rather unusual characteristics that contribute to its difficulties in developing suitable fume control: It consists of a multiplicity of relatively small establishments subject to wide Variations in products and operating schedules; operations are largely of the secondary or reclaiming nature and, therefore, often work dirty scrap metals; and, unfortunately, much of the industry is concentrated, to a considerable extent, near the center of the city. A difficulty inherent in most nonferrous foundries, including the many brass-works melting alloys containing zinc, is the high volatility of zinc and the extremely small mean particle size of the resulting zinc oxide fume.

Greywackes of the greater Auckland Region (Brynderwyn Hills to Hamilton), when considered on a regional scale, have characteristic ranges of physical, mineralogical and other properties. Some properties (eg density, porosity, crushing resistance, clay index) generally cluster and correlate with the basement greywacke facies, regions and terranes recognised by geologists, and their diagenetic/metamorphic level. Other local factors, particularly variations in mineralogical composition, nature of matrix cement, grain size, and degree of weathering may produce aberrant properties. Some of these local variations, when extreme, have the potential to affect the aggregateÆs performance in roading or the concrete industries.   Smectite and the zeolite laumontite are the major deleterious minerals occurring in fresh greywacke rocks of the Auckland region, although weathered rocks may contain halloysite, an expanding member of the kaolin clay mineral group. These minerals, when found in abnormally high levels in greywackes cause expansion effects in the aggregate. Currently there are inconsistencies in the detailed correlation of shrinkage, clay index, clay mineral content and intrinsic expansion data that need further research to resolve them.

The influence of microwave treatment on copper flotation has been investigated. Comparative batch flotation tests carried out on ore treated at 5?12 kW for 0.1?0.5 s showed that improvements in copper recovery of between 6?15 % could be achieved compared with untreated ore. Both recovery and cumulative grade increased with increasing treatment time and power. A preliminary economic analysis showed that microwave treatment will be economically viable if recoveries similar to those determined on laboratory scale can be achieved on a plant. LANDSAT imagery has renewed interest in linear features first recognised by E. S. Hills in a physiographic model of Australia. Certain of these lineaments are aligned with structures which control mineralisation.Lineament guidelines are potentially useful in many poorlyexposed areas if they can be recognised early enough in exploration and drilling programs leading to mine development.A case history based on the Charters Towers Gold Field indicates that lineament guidelines can be established early enough to guide development ofnew mines. The position of the Charters Towers Lineament was known as early as 1956. Subsequently, more detailed publications identified and classified associated lineaments which provide intersections correlated with gold occurrences. The discovery of a significant orebody at one of the most prominent lineament intersections came in 1975. Mine drilling has confirmed the influence ofintersecting structural trends indicated by lineaments but not by previous regional mapping.Recent gold discoveries south of Charters Towers lie in a grid of prominent lineaments. The development of mines about Charters Towers will provide additional understanding of relationships between centres of mineralisation and lineament intersections. This understanding may in future be sufficient to encourage exploration for a new generation of concealed gold deposits in northeastern Queensland.

The main factors which influence disposal of mine waste under New Zealand conditions are identified and discussed: namely, geological conditions which produce soft weather-sensitive waste, wet and cold winters which affect productivity in such waste, elevated seismicity which affects stability and the need for water rights which involve public participation. The waste disposal scheme for the Martha Hill Project is described, thereby illustrating how these factors influence the planning of a current mine strippings and tailings disposal scheme.

In 1946 Littlefield, Gray and Godbold published a thorough geologic description of the West Edmond Hunton Lime reservoir, located in Central Oklahoma, and discussion of its early performance.l They stressed implications of the nature of the reservoir rock on performance to be expected with production both by natural means and by pressure maintenance with gas injection. The essence of their analysis was that presence of an extensive interconnected system of fractures and solution channels constituting about 10 percent of the total reservoir void space in otherwise very low permeability reservoir rock would result in severe channeling of naturally encroaching water or injected gas through the fractures with little or no benefit to ultimate recovery of oil. Considerations were in progress to unitize the reservoir for pressure maintenance by gas injection. Some other engineers involved in the project had considerably different opinions at the time regarding continuity of fractures and regarding effects of such fractures on performance. The field was unitized Oct. 1, 1947. Subsequently, pilot gas injection tests were conducted in four areas of the field; large scale waterflooding was conducted in two parts of the field in the Bois d'Arc or Upper Hunton; and pilot waterflooding was conducted in the Chimney Hill or Lower Hunton. Full scale water-flooding is now in progress in the Chimney Hill section where it is oil productive. The primary purpose of this paper is to divine some of the secrets of this reservoir through analysis of all aspects of its performance, with the hope that it will be of help to engineers and operators in developing and operating other low permeability fractured reservoirs. In part, this considers variance of actual performance from some widely used conventional reservoir engineering assumptions. For brevity, other aspects of unit operation and its benefits to the owners are not discussed. Oil and Gas in Place For unit participation, net pay in the Bois #Arc defined by the gross SP anomaly on electric logs totalled 2,100,000 acre-ft in the 30,000-acre reservoir. Development of West Edmond predated modem logging techniques that now would be used to determine "net" or "productive" pay. In Fig. 1 this log pick is compared with detailed core analysis and core descripfion by Littlefield et a1.l for one well identified as A on the index map in Fig. 2. Not all of the gross Bois #Arc section had oil staining, but all cores with measureable intergranular permeability were stained. (The committee selection of the Bois d'Arc SP interval also includes the Frisco section as identified from cores by Littlefield.) The Bois d'Arc is oil productive throughout the entire 600-ft monoclinal accumulation from the eastern upstructure erosional pinchout to the west-side oil-water contact. The work described was conducted to develop standards for the application of wire rope clips on wire rope. These standards include optimum number of clips and clip nut torques for wire rope sizes 1/4 through 2-1/4 inches, when used for forming an eye attachment in wire rope. Wire rope test specimens with clip attachments were load tested on tensile testing machines to determine an effective combination of clip nut torques and number of clips for each size of wire rope to develop efficiencies above 90 percent of the catalog ultimate rope strength.

"SkimAir®, Outotec’s Flash Flotation unit, is placed in the grinding circuit to float the valuable liberated mineral particles from the circulating load of the grinding process while still relatively coarse. Esperanza copper-gold deposit located near Sierra Gorda, Chile, hosts 535 Mtn ore grading 0.57 % copper, 0.27 g/t gold. A series of laboratory and pilot flotation tests were conducted to find out the flotation performance of different ore types both with and without the Flash Flotation. This data was used in modeling and simulating to find the optimal flow sheet for the highest Au and Cu recoveries with required Cu concentrate grade. Simulations with the HSC Chemistry 6.1 software showed that with the SkimAir® and Flash Cleaning it is possible to achieve the required copper grade of 27% Cu with 5% higher recovery for gold and 2% higher recovery for copper compared to the circuit without the Flash Flotation. The pilot tests with simulations were the back up for the installation of four Outotec SkimAir® SK 2400 Flash Cells in the Esperanza circuit for the processing 95.000 tpd of copper-gold ore.INTRODUCTIONEsperanza copper-gold deposit is located near the town of Sierra Gorda, 2nd Administrative Region in Chile. Deposit hosts 535 Mtn ore grading 0.57 % copper, 0.27 g/t gold. The main copper minerals are chalcopyrite and bornite. Gold is carried by native gold and solid solution of copper.Antofagasta Minerals S.A. conducted a series of flotation studies at SGS Minerals Services. The studies included both laboratory and pilot scale work. In the pilot scale study the applicability of the Flash Flotation technology was studied with High-grade Andesite and High-grade Porphyry samples (SGS Mineral Services). The Flash Flotation technology gave significantly higher recovery for gold than the conventional flotation circuit. The recoveries for copper were slightly higher using the conventional flotation."

The WEMCO Heavy Media Drum Separator was first introduced by WEMCO in California in the 1940`s, initially from their base in San Francisco and later when the company moved to Sacramento. The WEMCO Company became a part of EIMCO Process Equipment in 1985, and in 2002 EIMCO became a part of the GL&V Group when Dorr-Oliver EIMCO was created. Throughout this period of time the WEMCO Drum has been installed on a variety of different applications and is now operating at the heart of many of the world?s largest Minerals and Coal Processing Plants, as well as being used by many smaller producers and metal re-cycling operations. This paper looks at the practical aspects of using WEMCO Drums in a representative range of processing applications.

"INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, with the cooperation of the University of Alabama and coal producers of Alabama, is making a series of washability studies to obtain technically and commercially important data from the productive coal beds of the State. Based on the system followed in these studies, this report consists of screen-sizing and sink-and-float data on the America and Pratt beds at Gorgas, Ala.SAMPLING AT THE MINESAlthough operations were discontinued in 1929, the accessible openings of the old Gorgas mines of the Southeastern Fuel Co. made possible the taking of samples from the America bed at three openings and from the Pratt bed at two openings. A sample was taken from the America bed at the Klondyke opening; a second was taken about 1 rile south of the Klondyke at the Musgrove America opening, and a third sample was taken about 1-1/2 miles south of the Musgrove-America at the Cricket Lodge opening. A sample was taken from the Pratt bed at Musgrove-Pratt No. 1, which is about 3/4 mile east of Musgrove-America, and a second sample was taken at Musgrove-Pratt No. 2, which is about 3/4 mile west of Musgrove-America. The samples ranged in weight from 1/2 ton to 1 ton and were equivalent to approximately a 2-ton sample from each bed. Figure 1 shows sections of the beds at the places sampled.In addition to the samples for washability study, a seam sample for analysis was taken at each of the places sampled. So as to give a representative seam sample for each of the two beds, these samples were combined in the laboratory in proportion to the thickness of the bed at the places sampled."

This report is the 26th in a series summarizing Bureau of Mines research and technologic work on coal and related investigations and the 8th of these reports to be issued on a calendar-year basis.1 It reviews briefly work in progress during 1961, and it provides references to publications by Bureau personnel during 1961 and also to a few older papers that were not cited in prior reports of this series. Details about some of the researches mentioned may be obtained by referring to the publications cited in the footnotes or in the further list in the Bibliography; other phases of work are reported here for the first time and will be covered in more detail by later publications. The coal program of the Bureau of Mines extends over the wide range of applied and theoretical studies indicated by the table of contents of this report. Applied studies are conducted in connection with the development and evaluation of new mining techniques, and the effective processing and utilization of coal and coal products. Analyses of coal, technical advice, and other assistance to Federal agencies in connection with fuel and boiler-water problems, and health and safety activities are among the practical services handled by the Bureau, Fundamental research such as that on coal structure and on the properties of coal is conducted because it will, over a period of the, furnish an increasing general knowledge about coal; scientists and engineers may use this knowledge in solving problems in mining and utilization of

LKAB’s Kiruna Mine, located in northern Sweden, produces about 24 Mton of iron ore yearly using sublevel caving. For efficiency, the mine must deliver planned quantities of three ore products. We use mixed integer programming to schedule Kiruna’s operations, specifically, which production blocks should be mined, and when they should be mined to minimize deviations from planned production quantities while adhering to mining restrictions (e.g., sequencing). A new production block database and a well-formulated mixed integer programming model dramatically reduce the size of the original problem; in less than ten minutes we generate five-year schedules with time fidelity of months.

The additive property of dispersion variances was found experimentally by D.G. Krige using data from the gold deposits of the Witwatersrand. In this property, called ?Krige?s relationship?, the dispersion of a small unit, v, within the deposit is equal to the sum of the dispersion of v within a bigger unit, V, and the dispersion of these units, V, within the deposit, D. It is known that the variance of the grades decreases as the support increases, the so-called volume-variance relationship. To analyse volume-variance and Krige?s relationship, the methodology herein proposed combines blending piles and geostatistical simulation to simulate the in situ and the pile grade variability. Variability reduction in large piles is based on the volume-variance relationship, i.e. the larger the support, the smaller the variability (assuming perfect mix). Based on a pre-defined mining sequence to select the blocks that will form each pile for each simulated block model, the statistical fluctuation of the grades derived from real piles can be simulated. Using this methodology, one can evaluate within a certain time period the expected grade variability for various pile sizes, and also calculate the Krige?s relationship between the small blocks and the piles of different sizes. A real case study using a large Brazilian iron ore deposit illustrates the methodology and demonstrates the validity of the results.

This research report was produced in response to the release of the Mineral and Petroleum Royalty Bill. It involved are view of the mineral investment environments of selected countries in order to form an opinion on the appropriateness and competitiveness of the proposed royalty structure for South Africa. Many emerging countries have recently attracted a significant share of foreign investment, as a direct result of changes in policy. These are, by implication, the least risky and most favourable destinations for the ?investment dollar?. The five most competitive countries, namely Chile, Argentina, Peru, Mexico and Brazil have been identified as succeeding with their policy visions of creating favourable domestic investment environments. The investment rules of these countries served as a basis for the compilation of a Competitive Investment Framework (CIF). This is a template of best practice against which other investment environments, such as that of South Africa, can be measured. The framework indicates that mineral royalties should ideally be no more than three per cent, demonstrating that the regime proposed in the Royalty Bill is out of step with international best practice. Mineral royalties can never be viewed in isolation and in the assessment of the rates proposed in the Royalty Bill, one must consider the total taxation package. Such assessment appears in Section 5 of this report, demonstrating that there is reason for concern if National Treasury were to impose the rates stipulated in the Royalty Bill. The alternatives, conclusion and recommendations of the review appear in Sections 9 and 10. These are the result of independent analysis and assessment of the fundamental principles. It is done through the application of a Competitive Investment Framework that avoids the highly subjective and emotional views that often accompany a process like this.
