The cyclone, or centrifugal separator, ,is firmly established in industry as a low cost separator of solids from gases.While it will also separate fluids of different densities, and solids from liquids, its main use is to remove relatively fine dusts from gases whose pr~erties are generally not greatly different from those of air. This latter phase of operation is the one that will be dealt with here.The duty of such a cyclone separating system is to take in a supply of dusty gas and separate it into its components of dust and clean gas as perfectly as possible for the least consumption of pressure head. Any separation at all causes pressure loss and, in general, the greater the separation, the greater the pressure drop needed to effect it. The percentage of dust in suspension which is separated from the gas-dust mixture is commonly called the collection or separation efficiency. Overall or "true" efficiency must take pressure drop into account and may be considered as proportional to the ratio of the percentage of dust collected to the resultant pressure drop. For any cyclone It will vary with different dusts.Many commercial adaptions of the simple cyclone are made solely on the basis of pressure drop improvement, without taking into account the effect on separation efficiency, probably because the latter is so difficult to assess correctly. It appears unfortunate but true that the majority of such adaptions and patent gadgets fitted to cyclones which decrease pressure drop, do have an adverse effect on separation. In other' words, the true efficiency is seldom increased but often diminished.Without a knowledge of what actually goes on inside a cyclone, it is impossible fully to appreciate the real effect of a modification. Because of the renewed importance of the strategic metal manganese the Bureau of Mines in conducting further research on pyrometallurgical methods of beneficiating manganiferous iron ores and low-grade manganese ores. Published data on the Pyrometallurgical of manganese ores have been reviewed by Joseph.5/ A method of treatment that has received less consideration than others is the matte smelting of manganese or the separation of manganese from the iron and the gangue in an ore b, formation of a matte, that consists principally of esulfide of manganese. A procedure of this type has been patented by Betts.6/ Lofquist7/ claims advantages for the production of a sulfide-oxide matte as a method of recovering manganese in alloys containing manganese and iron.

This paper describes the results of VLF-EM test surveys, using the Ronka EM-16 equipment, over a selection of environments in Australia and Papua.Using comparisons with known geology, drilling information and other geophysical work it is shown that the maximum depth of penetration of the method is about 100 ft but is considerably less than this in most areas.The author believes the method could aid in geological mapping and provide a useful adjunct to aeromagnetic surveying in some areas.

The conclusions reached by den Tex after a study of the fabric of some rocks from Broken Hill have been used to support the epigenetic hypothesis for the origin of the ore, first by Edwards (1959, p. 70) and then by Stillwell (1962, p. 131) in his criticism of Segnit's (1961) views. Den Tex claimed that the petrofabric study provided "independent evidence that the ore, at least in its present form, post-dates all events of a diastrophic nature in the area concerned".Repetition of this claim by Edwards and by Stillwell and the lack of any criticism of den Tex's work for more than three years implies its general acceptance by geologists in Australia. Therefore it appears necessary to examine parts of den Tex's paper in detail to show that his, conclusions are unwarranted. The major weaknesses in his study are that1. the petrofabric study was inadequate to warrant any major conclusions, and2. the petrofabric data allow alternative conclusions.Den Tex made a single visit to the field, collected six carefully selected specimens and presented quartz and· biotitepetrofabric diagrams for two specimens, quartz-diagrams alone for three more and included three diagrams of the orientation of c-axes and fractures in one specimen. It is not reasonable to come to firm conclusions about the origin of such a complex area as Broken Hill on such inadequate data, despite den Tex's claim (p. 87, lines 22 and 23) that "a thorough investigation of the quartz-fabric of the wall rock was undertaken".Den Tex's interpretation of each diagram is open to criticism, and alternative (and to my mind, preferable) interpretations may be made. The objective of the work reported herein was to evaluate state-of-the-art repeaters used in wireless communications to determine their suitability for use in extending the range of portable and mobile communications in underground mine applications. The scope of the work included wireless repeaters in the frequency range from LF (500 kilohertz) up to the one giga-hertz range. These repeaters included not only single-channel repeaters, that is F1/F1 repeaters for short range simplex party line communications, but in addition, F1/F2 type repeaters currently commercially available in the HF, VHF and UHF bands.

Noise surveys conducted in underground coal mines have consistently indicated that auger mining machines subject the operator and helpers to excessive noise exposure. The machine cutting heads have been identified as the primary noise source. This report documents the research program conducted to (1) investigate the nature of the cutting head noise problem, (2) develop noise control concepts, (3) devise in-mine survivable techniques to implement the noise control concepts, and (4) build and demonstrate prototype reduced-noise auger miner cutting heads. The dynamic forces generated during coal cutting by the brittle fracture of coal are predominently low frequency. The low-frequency (less than 1500 Hz) structural response of the cutting head, therefore, determines the noise radiated by the cutting head. The most feasible methods of reducing the cutting head low-frequency response are to increase both the structural stiffness and the low-frequency damping. A technique was devised to achieve these goals. The standard plate helix was replaced by a sand-filled hollow helix of triangular cross section, and the core diameter was increased with an attendant reduction in helix depth. Extended in-mine tests demonstrated the operational capability of the reduced-noise auger cutting heads. The simple noise control concepts are valid for all continuous miner cutting heads. The sand-filled hollow helix technique, which achieved a 10 dB(A) noise reduction for the auger, can be used on any helix-bearing Cutting head.

Turbidite-hosted, mesothermal lode gold deposits in Paleozoic metasedimentary rocks of the Buller Terrane, western South Island have a similar geological history and genesis to the Paleozoic lode gold deposits ofVictoria, Australia and Nova Scotia, Canada. In all three regions the gold deposits are hosted by interbedded meta-sandstone and meta-argillite that have been folded and regionally metamorphosed to greenschist facies, and locally in Nova Scotia to amphibolite facies. The gold deposits are typically narrow, structurally controlled quartz veins associated with dilatant zones in reverse faults or fold-related fractures. The principal vein types include: bedding parallel or concordant veins, discordant veins, saddle reefs, and stockwork veins. En-echelon and "ac" type veins are sometimes also gold-bearing in Nova Scotia. The contrasting competency of the host meta-argillite and meta-sandstone beds is an important factor in vein formation, particularly for the bedding parallel veins, which are typically developed within meta-argillite beds or along the contacts between meta-argillite and meta-sandstone. Veins found within meta-sandstone units are generally discordant. The deposits in Victoria are well known for their bedding-parallel veins, saddle reefs ( Bendigo ) and leather jacket reefs (Ballarat). Bedding-parallel veins are also common in Nova Scotia , along with a few examples of saddle reefs. In contrast, vein formation probably occurred later in the deformation history of the Reefton and Lyell goldfields, with most veins being bedding discordant and more typically aligned with the axial plane cleavage of the folds rather than bedding planes. The quartz lodes in one deposit, Globe-Progress, strike approximately perpendicular to the bedding and fold axes. No saddle reefs have been recorded from the Buller Terrane. Mesothermal vein morphology reflects the amount of fmite strain, the strain rate, competency contrasts, lithotypes, and the confirming pressures to which the system was exposed. On the basis of comparable depositional depths and rheologies of the host rocks, a controlling factor influencing the development of different vein styles (and timing) might be finite strain, as exemplified by the tightness of folding in the host rocks. Folding appears to be tighter in the Victorian rocks than in either the Buller Terrane or Nova Scotian rocks.

"INTRODUCTION Water flooding of oil sands in Texas as a means of secondary recovery of oil has been practiced mainly in the north-central part of the State, which includes the old shallow fields in eight counties, extending south through Wichita and Clay Counties on the Red River into Brown County.The Texas Railroad Commission, is empowered ""to promote conservation and prevent waste in the drilling, completion, operation, and abandonment of oil wells"" and ""to issue regulations necessary for fulfillment of these ends,"" granted The Texas Co. the first permit to inject water into the oil-bearing sand on December 7, 1935. The permit was granted after the Commission had conducted a number of hearings, which were attended by many operators interested in that method of secondary recovery. Through December 31, 1944, the Commission had granted 50 permits for water flooding. Of that number, 45 permits were issued for projects in north Texas, the remaining 14 being distributed throughout west and south Texas. By the end of 1944, there were 33 active and 5 abandoned water-flooding projects in the North Texas area, as is in figure I.Oil production in the North Texas area started in 1904 from the shallow sands (ranging from 100 feet to 800 feet in depth) of the Petrolia (or Henrietta) field in northern Clay County. Development was rapid and unrestricted during the boom period from about 1911 to 1918, and considerable waste of both produced oil and reservoir energy resulted."

Mine water management is often an afterthought in mine planning processes and can introduce significant risks to projects when studied as a stand alone component at a later stage in the mine design. Incorporation of a mine dewatering and pore pressure dissipation strategy in the early stages of mine planning is imperative in order to minimise constraints on the production schedule, to match designed pit slopes and maximise project value for an open cut mine option such as Olympic Dam. A risk-based mine planning approach was adopted during the project selection phase study whereby water management was introduced into mine planning, scheduling and the development of an operational strategy. Hydrological and hydrogeological studies and outputs were successfully integrated into the various iterations of the mine planning cycle during early selection phase to manage the potential water management risks associated with pit slope depressurisation and access to dry working conditions during rapid advancement of mining phases.An extensive network of vibrating wire piezometer sets and long-term depressurisation testing characterised aquifer conditions and demonstrated that hydraulic connectivity exists within the geological profile due to the presence of structures and resource drill holes which enhance vertical connectivity. This connectivity, along with underdrainage from mining activities contributes up to 100 m of depressurisation in low permeability units.A pit dewatering strategy incorporates the mine planning schedules and accounts for operational constraints as to the location and development of the dewatering wells, storages and pipelines. Numerical modelling generated a range of likely pit inflows and dewatering requirements with the average initial dewatering discharge likely to be 150 L/s and reduce quickly to 50 L/s after five years, depending on the premine schedule.Coupled hydrogeological and geotechnical assessments were also carried out as part of the mine planning cycle and indicate that successful dewatering will go a long way to reduce the pore pressures within key geotechnical units during the rapid mining phase where around 300 m of cover sequence is stripped in five years. However, the residual storage in the primary aquifer and the residual pore pressure in underlying low permeability units will need to be dissipated (in-pit horizontal holes) as the pit floor advances. Pit slope design angles are sensitive to depressurisation and dewatering and up to 70 per cent depressurisation of key geotechnical rock units are required. Whilst an accelerated program of aquifer dewatering supported by lithostatic unloading should drive rapid depressurisation in the lower permeability units, intervention is anticipated in key geotechnical units such as the Tregolana Shale and volcaniclastics. The extent of induced drainage will ultimately depend in part upon the mining rate and geotechnical stability requirements. Practical operability testing addressed the potential for operational constraints to mine depressurisation activities such as congestion and mining schedule development within the pit and identified that depressurisation drilling can be achieved even with reduced access availability. Mine operations and planning groups established design criteria and considered the likely inoperable periods following rainfall events of seven to 14 days to manage the base surge and minimise impact on production. In-pit surface water management options to minimise operational disruptions during and after significant rainfall events were estimated used a stochastic approach.

From modest beginnings in 1996, research into the mineral potential of New ZealandÆs Exclusive Economic Zone has progressed into a major multidisciplinary component of GNSÆs recently funded 6-year æMineral Wealth of NZ and its EEZÆ Programme. In excess of $7.5 M of research funding has been expended, plus $10 M leveraged via collaborations with NIWA (NZ), NOAA (USA), JAMSTEC (Japan), U. Kiel (Germany) and ANU (Australia), whose scientists have contributed hugely to research cruises, as well as subsequent analysis and publication. The 1999 NZAPLUME I cruise was the first research expedition to systematically locate, and chemically characterise, submarine hydrothermal venting associated with arc volcanoes of the southern part the Kermadec intra oceanic arc system. This was followed by the 2002 NZAPLUME II and 2004 NZAPLUME III cruises to the mid- and northern-sections of the Kermadec arc, respectively. Combined, these cruises have surveyed 1300 km of the volcanic chain (from Whakatane to Monowai), including 34 major volcanic centres. Together with concurrent surveys in the Tonga arc, this is now the longest continuous stretch of intra oceanic arc to be surveyed for hydrothermal emissions. Most of the volcanic centres are characterised by simple cones although 30 per cent contain caldera complexes, and compositions range from basalt through to rhyolite. Massive sulphide mineralisation has been recovered from several volcanic centres in the southern Kermadecs (Clark, Rumble II West and Brothers), suggesting the existence of significant Au and base metal bearing deposits along the arc front.

Longwall mining alters the fluid-flow-related reservoir properties of the rocks overlying and underlying an extracted panel due to fracturing and relaxation of the strata. These mining-related disturbances create new pressure depletion zones and new flow paths for gas migration and may cause unexpected or uncontrolled migration of gas into the underground workplace. One common technique to control methane emissions in longwall mines is to drill vertical gob gas vent holes into each longwall panel to capture the methane within the overlying fractured strata before it enters the work environment. Thus, it is important to optimize the well parameters, e.g., the borehole diameter, and the length and position of the slotted casing interval relative to the fractured gas-bearing zones. This paper presents the development and results of a comprehensive, "dynamic," three-dimensional reservoir model of a typical multipanel Pittsburgh coalbed longwall mine. The alteration of permeability fields in and above the panels as a result of the mining- induced disturbances has been estimated from mechanical modeling of the overlying rock mass. Model calibration was performed through history matching the gas production from gob gas ventholes in the study area. Results presented in this paper include a simulation of gas flow patterns from the gas-bearing zones in the overlying strata to the mine environment, as well as the influence of completion practices on optimizing gas production from gob gas ventholes.

The Getchell Mine is located on the east flank of the Osgood Mountain Range in the Potosi Mining District, Humboldt County, NV. Mining in the area first began in 1883 for copper, lead and silver in skarn-related deposits. Tungsten was discovered in the skarns in 1916 and was mined sporadically until 1957. The first major discovery was made in 1933 when two Winnemucca prospectors, Edward Knight and Emmett Chase, found gold at the present site of the Getchell gold mine. In 1934, after a small amount of preliminary prospecting, the claims were purchased by Noble H. Getchell of Midas, NV. The Getchell Mine Inc. was organized and exploration and development work began on a broad scale. Major funding was provided by George Wingfield and investors he assembled. Laxalt described Wingfield’s immediate history prior to his financing of Getchell as follows.

The aim of this investigation was to reduce the cost of primary steel de-oxidation by substitution of aluminium primary de-oxidation with a practice that uses carbon. The cost of carbon is four times lower than that of aluminium. The application of carbon would directly result in raw material cost savings. Investigations were conducted at Iscor?s Newcastle steel plant on various steel grades. Specific production aspects were emphasized to ensure that the cost savings accrued would not create secondary expenses. These production aspects entailed: ?Yields on de-oxidation elements ?De-oxidation capabilities ?Alloying yields (Mn and Si) ?Carbon-pickup ?Nitrogen-pickup ?Temperature loss during tap ?Steel cleanliness ?Slag morphology. This project proved that carbon de-oxidation, apart from reducing de-oxidation raw material cost due to cheaper raw materials being used and lower consumption rates, resulted in steel that is cleaner and has lower nitrogen concentrations. Carbon primary de-oxidation has been implemented at Iscor?s Newcastle plant on a large range of steel grades, ranging from ultra-high carbon (> 0.60% C) to ultra-low carbon (< 0.03% C) grades. A net saving of between R100 000 and R200 000 per month was achieved.

The goal of the U.S. Bureau of Mines diesel engine research program is to reduce exhaust emissions from diesel-powered equipment used in underground mines. This research has led to significant advances in aerosol measurement and to the development of more effective emission controls. This Information Circular contains reports of some of the presentations made at the Bureau&apos;s Information and Technology Transfer Seminar on Diesels in Underground Mines given in Minneapolis, MN, on September 29-30, 1992. The seminar emphasized the measurement and control of diesel particulate matter emissions. Topics covered include a discussion of the health issues associated with the use of diesel equipment underground, an overview of regulations, measurement techniques for diesel exhaust aerosol, levels of diesel exhaust pollutants found in mines, and modern emission controls. An appendix is included that contains a report describing the capabilities of the Bureau&apos;s diesel emissions research laboratory, two papers describing the effects of engine maintenance or: emissions, a paper describing the monitoring of carbon dioxide in mine air as an indicator of air quality, a glossary, and a list of abbreviations and acronyms.

Draglines are massive machines extensively utilized in opencast mines for overburden stripping. The demanding working environment induces fractures, wear and tear, and fatigue failures in dragline components and eventuates in extended maintenance, lengthy downtimes, and loss of production. The bucket is the main source of external loads on the machinery, since interactions with ground materials take place in this region. This study aims to develop a generic finite element model of the stress on an operating bucket. This entails (i) three-dimensional modelling of a dragline bucket, (ii) analytical estimation of resistive forces in the bucket movement, (iii) three-dimensional simulation of the moving bucket using finite element analysis (FEA), and (iv) sensitivity analysis to examine the effect of formation characteristics on stress variation. Simulation results imply that the drag hitch and digging teeth are the elements of the bucket that are most prone to failure. In addition, sensitivity analysis indicates that internal friction angle of the formation is the dominant parameter leading fluctuations in stress values. Changes in stress level are least influenced by formation density.

Isotopes and hydrochemistry were used to define groundwater flow systems and better understand the hydrogeological setting of the Karijini National Park, which is in the Central Pilbara region adjacent to the Marandoo iron ore mine. Based on the stable isotope composition of the water samples, the data can be divided into two main groups. Groundwater is characterised by depleted dD and d18O, suggesting no significant evaporation effect. Surface water on the other hand is more enriched in dD and d18O due to evaporation. The relatively high concentration of Cl- compared to rainfall and depleted dD and d18O values of groundwater indicate that recharge of the aquifers is occurring during intense rainfall events when rapid infiltration occurs. Evapotranspiration then acts to concentrate ionic species prior to recharge. Relationships between the major ion concentration and catchment area, surficial Tertiary cover and distance between recharge and discharge were identified. The results show that these catchment variables combine to determine unique water chemistry for each sub catchment in Karijini National Park. The TDS concentration of the groundwater in the Marra Mamba Iron Formation that hosts the Marandoo ore body is higher than most of the water bodies surrounding the mining area suggesting significant modification or different recharge mechanisms to that of the Karijini groundwater.

An examination is made of some of the consequences of a magmatic gas phase developed during a late stage of differentiation of an acidic magma. Elements possessing halides with high partial pressures (Sn, Mo, W) may be removed from the magma by distillation into gas bubbles in the manner suggested by Fenner (1933). The common chalcophile elements are not affected by this mechanism, but form sulphides which may become attached to rising gas bubbles by one of three distinct mechanisms. The gas bubbles may then carry the sulphides upwards and concentrate them in some favourable locus, giving rise to an ore-forming fluid. The process would operate selectively upon different sulphides and is capable of providing an explanation of the paragenetic succession observed in ore deposits as well as other important geological criteria of ore genesis.INTRODUCTIONThere is a widespread belief among contemporary geologists that a large and important class of ore deposits is genetically related in some way&#183;to acidic igneous rocks. This class includes the tin-tungsten-molybdenum-bismuth type of mineralization as well as a variety of sulphide deposits.A basic problem confronting explanation of the genesis of these deposits is the manner in which trace elements which were originally widely dispersed in granitic magmas were segregated therefrom and concentrated into economic mineral deposits.The principles underlying the formation of one group of minerals deposits (pegmatites) related to granitic magmas ate reasonably well understood, largely due to the labours of Goldschmidt and his school.
