The mining industry of Cameroon continued to be dominated by crude petroleum. Crude petroleum production has become the most important facet of Cameroon's economic development. Oil production was estimated to be 6.3 million tons in 1983 compared with 5.2 million tons in 1982 and 4.3 million tons in 1981. Over two-thirds of its export income was attributed to crude oil. The country's only refinery, dedicated in 1981, has a production capacity of 2 million tons. Cameroon has become self- sufficient in petroleum products since commissioning the refinery. The oil sector contributed approximately 13.5% to Cameroon's gross domestic product in 1982-83. Oil production was expected to rise from 125,000 barrels per day in 1983 to 156,000 barrels per day in 1985 when output peaks. Cameroon's ultimate recoverable reserves have been calculated at 100 million tons, or 750 million barrels of oil.

The Work Crew Performance Model (WCPM) seeks to define performance variability within similar tasks of an underground work crew and relate observed variability to a cost consequence. Performance variability is described using work site observations to determine the adherence to job elements con¬tained within a standard operating procedure. Key components of the WCPM include (1) job definition through task analyses and the ranking of job elements by perceived cost consequence, (2) observational techniques for establishing performance baselines by measuring adherence to safe and proficient job procedures, and (3) cost linkages between adherence to task procedures and measures of consequence for noncompliance. Data presented within this report were obtained through the study of shuttle car operation in an underground mine in Appalachia. Observed adherence to safe and proficient job procedures by opera¬tors matched well with the consensus profiles (measured through a nominal group technique) with min¬ing personnel. It was also found that experienced operators consistently outperformed less experienced, incidental operators. These findings imply potential use of the WCPM as a practical procedure for thinking systematically about the choices available to reduce performance variability. Field application of the model can offer useful data to evaluate training and financially support performance improvement strategies that can be tested for their ability to reduce human error.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating vanadium recovery from various domestic resources. A low-grade carnotite ore sample containing 0.34 pct V20S and 0.04 pct U30S was leached, and the results were compared with those of similar leach tests using a mill-grade sample containing 1.26 pct V205 and 0.19 pct U308. Experiments on the two ore samples included agitation leaching, pugging, salt-roast leaching, and autoclave leaching. None of the leaching methods investigated showed any significant advantage over another except autoclaving, which reduced the leach time but at the expense of greater acid consumption. Typical of the experimental results attained are the data gathered from the agitation leaching tests. Agitation leaching of the mill-grade ore with 100 lb/ton H2S04 resulted in extractions of 94 pct U308 and 33 pct V205. To increase the vanadium extraction from 33 to 91 pct required concentrations of 300 lb/ton H2S04 and 10 lb/ton NaC103. Complementary agitation leach tests on the low-grade ore required 200 lb/ton H2S04 to extract 94 pct U308, and 300 lb/ton H2S04 and 10 lb/ton NaC103 to extract 90 pct V205.

The mineral deposits found in carbonate facies rocks of sedimentary basins include deposits comprised of the country rock itself such as limestone for chemical uses, dolomite for road aggregate, and a variety of other industrial uses of the sedimentary rock. Exploration for new reserves is generally conducted on basis of outcrop investigation, subsurface drilling, and facies change studies while geophysics and geochemistry are not applied. In contrast, rapid development has taken place in the application of both geophysical and geochemical techniques in exploration for stratiform deposits of zinc, lead, barite, and fluorite deposits. This paper will present case histories and show illustrations from such work in the Mid-Continent region. The Metals Division of International Oil & Gas, Inc. has gathered this experience through work over the last three years along the southern margin of the Eastern Interior platform focusing on the states of Arkansas and Tennessee. The exploration work was conducted partially for the Company's own account, partially in joint exploration ventures with mining companies including International Mogul Mines, Ltd., a Canadian company; Bear Creek Mining Company, a subsidiary of Kennecott Copper Corporation; the Mining Division of W. R. Grace and Company, and Boliden-Preussag Exploration, a Swedish-German partnership. A super-conducting high gradient magnetic separator with matrix vibration in dry separation mode is a powder purification device, which has been used to remove weakly magnetic impure particles from fine calcite powders below 53 µm in this study. A fundamental question concerned is the evolution of the matrix clogging under gas-solids loads. This paper presents the improvement of the separation selectivity using a method of mechanically based vibration on the matrix in the separator. The functions of the matrix vibration are discussed. The results indicated that the mechanically based vibration on the matrix within a high intensity magnetic field while a feed was introduced in an air stream, was found to be effective for the dry purification of fine powder materials.

This Bureau of Mines publication contains analyses and related source data for 349 natural gas samples from 26 States and 2 foreign countries. The 3 samples from foreign countries and 339 of the U.S. samples were collected during calendar year 1983. The remaining seven samples were collected earlier, but releases granting permission to publish were not received until 1983. All samples were obtained and analyzed as part of Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economies. This survey has been conducted since 1917. The analyses published herein were made by the mass spectrometer and chromatograph. The results of these investigations are published annually to make the information available to the petroleum industry and the general public. Twenty-seven publications have presented the results of 13,332 gas analyses made prior to 1983. The first three bulletins (1-3)3 contain analyses and related source data on 5,218 gas samples collected from 1917 through 1960; these bulletins have been supplemented annually by information circulars (4-17, 19-24, 26-27) containing 8,104 analyses of sam¬ples collected since 1960.

In 2006, McNally International Inc., in a joint venture partner-ship with Aecon Constructors, was the successful bidder on two York Region Tunnel Projects: the Bathurst Collector/Langstaff Trunk Sewers and the York Durham Sewer System (YDSS) Interceptor Sewer 19th Avenue, both in the Toronto area. These projects comprised a total of 13 km (8 miles) of 2.74 m (9 ft) finished diameter tunnels and are both part of the YDSS. Both contracts required the use of earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machines (TBM) with a precast concrete segmental liner.

When the opportunity to revisit the region was offered in 1929, as a result of a cooperative agreement between the State Mining Board of Oregon and the United States Geological Survey, it seemed advisable to pay particular attention to this feature of the lodes, in the hope that if the idea of zonal relations was confirmed it might serve as a guide in exploitation.

For several years, or from about 1932 to 1935, inclusive, the coal industry of the United States had an excellent record as to coal-mine explosions. In 1937 and in 1938 to date there has been a definite increase in the number of explosions attended by considerable loss of life and property damage. In most of these explosions one important underlying and contributing cause has been lack of sufficient (or at least efficient) ventilation to properly dilute and remove explosive gas from the mine. This increase in explosions indicates that. the lesson taught through bitter experience, many times in the not far-distant past, of the need for good ventilation is frequently being overlooked, partly because the relatively good experience of the industry in the past several years has made many mining people forgetful. Moreover mining practices are rapidly changing, and in some instances the changes are being made with little if any regard for safety. It appears, therefore, that a review of some ventilation principles and practices should be of value in preventing further disasters; this paper has been prepared with that object in mind. In coal mining the need for thorough ventilation of all underground working places is recognized by both mining practice and law; such ventilation is generally obtained by the use of fans that circulate a quantity of air much in excess of the quantity of coal produced, by weight as well as by volume. For example, in a relatively small mine producing 1,000 tons of coal per day and circulating 100,000 cubic feet of air, which is by no means abnormal, 2,000,000 pounds of coal and approximately 10,900,000 pounds of air would be moved out of the mine every 24 hours. Because of the need for adequate dilution and removal of methane issuing or likely to issue from mine strata and for removal of the carbon dioxide formed by coal and timber oxidation up-to-date coal mines usually provide an air volume which if adequately coursed not only removes these gases but also the gaseous products of the detonation of explosives (which may include carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulphide, nitrogen oxides, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen) and the carbon

Mineral output and trade in the Central American countries were directly or indirectly affected by the sometimes violent civil unrest and recessionary economic developments that have pervaded the region for several years. Central American countries found their foreign exchange export earnings and traditional market areas shrinking while essential import costs were rising. Restricted spending measures were adopted by governments and private industries. Domestic investment funds for mineral development and exploration projects were among the first casualties of these austere budgetary measures, especially since weak demand and depressed mineral prices diminished the probability of a favorable cost-benefit ratio. The lack of physical security and political stability also discouraged private foreign investment. The United States Congress enacted the Caribbean Basin Economic Recovery Act of 1983 (19 U.S.C. 2702), more popularly known as the Caribbean Basin Initiative (CBI). This legislation was designed to stimulate economic recovery and promote economic development by increasing private investment and trade in the Caribbean Basin countries. The act provided for the elimination of U.S. duties on most trade items imported directly from eligible Caribbean countries, provided at least 35% of the product value originated in the region. The financial assistance components of the CBI were to be supportive of the basin's private sector as well as assist general economic stabilization programs.

The Project alignment initiates north of Pinerolo, along the State Road 23[S.S. 23] that is one of the principal arteries to the northwestern Alps where a number of Olympic events for the 2006 Winter Games will be held. The 3.5 km ring road bypasses the Porte habitat by traversing twice the Chisone River. It consists of the following principal structures [Figure 1]: San Martino bridge [130 m in four bays] Prarostino viaduct [130 m in four bays] Craviale tunnel [1055 m] Turinella bridge [a 50 m long bridge that connects the two tunnels] Turina tunnel [665 m] Malanaggio viaduct [350 m in 9 bays]. The road section is 13 m wide and is made up of two 3.75 m lanes, a hard shoulder [1.50 m wide] and a 1.25 m wide curb for each lane. The Project maximum velocity is 100 km/h.

There are considered deep piles which are fixed in blocks of rotating machinery foundations. A mathematical background is developed for determining the behavior of this kind of piles for motions caused by horizontal and vertical oscillations, as well as by roc-king and twisting. It is assumed that the piles come across a top soil layer of depth c, not capable of lateral support, and penetrate over a length b, in a bottom firm soil layer, or in a bottom soft soil layer in which vibrations can produce voids around the piles. With respect to b and c, as well as to the elastic properties of piles and soils, the analysis leads to the maximum bending moments and shear forces subjecting the piles, to the maximum lateral bearing on the bottom soil layer, as well as to the deflection of the pile and the displacement of the foundation block. The results of the performed analysis can be applied to seismic loads too, and they are illustrated by a numerical example.

Recent advances in computing, rendering, and display technologies have generated increased accessibility for virtual reality (VR). VR allows the creation of dynamic, high-fidelity environments to simulate dangerous situations, test conditions, and visualize concepts. Consequently, numerous products have been developed, but many of these are limited in scope. Therefore, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health researchers developed a VR framework, called VR Mine, to rapidly create an underground mine for human data collection, simulation, visualization, and training. This paper describes the features of VR Mine using self-escape and proximity detection as case studies. Features include mine generation, simulated networks, proximity detection systems, and the integration and visualization of real-time ventilation models.

"This article addresses the prevalence of poor public reporting practices of coal exploration results, coal resources and coal reserves in southern Africa. Currently, the reporting of coal tonnage without supporting coal qualities or saleable tonnes and quality is a poor reporting practice that occurs far too often. Not all coal is equal — therefore it is extremely important that investors or potential investors are provided with the full details of both run-of-mine (ROM) and saleable coal tonnage, their associated qualities and other material and relevant information.Competent or qualified persons should note that publicly reported information should be sufficient to enable an informed reader to make a reasonable and balanced assessment of the significance of the information provided. “Companies are encouraged to provide information in their public reports, which is as comprehensive as possible (CRIRSCO, 2013).” However, too often this isn’t the case, and material matters are either not reported or inadequately disclosed.According to the South African National Standard (SANS) 10320:2014 draft document, “tonnage and coal quality that will be available for sale, either in the raw ROM state (raw saleable) at a specified moisture content, or after beneficiation of the ROM coal by processing operations to produce materials at specified qualities, size ranges and moisture contents. The assessments must demonstrate that at the time of reporting, the marketing of the products is reasonably justified. The basis of the predicted practical product yield to achieve the saleable coal reserve must be stated. The moisture basis of reporting shall be stated.” An example as to why coal qualities are so important to the public, the requirements of South Africa’s electric public utility (Eskom) power stations are detailed in the followint paragraphs. The Kendal power station, commissioned in 1988, operates at a calorific value (CV) range of 19 to 20 MJ/ kg, an ash content between 29 and 34 percent and volatiles between 20 to 21 percent. Other power stations, such as Kriel or Hendrina, may require different qualities, such as a CV range of 22 to 23 MJ/kg, an ash content between 20 and 28 percent and volatiles between 22 to 23 percent. Thus, in terms of domestic saleable coal, it is not just about reporting the coal qualities but also informing the investor as to which power station the coal is intended to be sold as “boilers are designed to burn particular qualities of coal” and “it is not always possible to transfer coal between stations because of different quality requirements at each station (Chetty, 2010).” Sulfur content is another important quality with the ideal coal content having a quality of less than 1 percent sulfur."

The Triassic Ipswich (SE. Queensland) coals are of bituminous rank. The more exact rank of individual samples was determined by measuring the reflectance of the vitrinite. While in general the rank of the coals increases with stratigraphic depth, minor reversals, probably related to igneous intrusions, occur.The Ipswich coals form a coherent group so far as petrographic type is concerned. All are comparatively rich in vitrite and clarite, cutinite being the common maceral of the exinite group. The mineral contents of all the coals are comparatively high, clay and quartz being most abundant. The coals appear to be of essentially autochthonous origin, and to have been formed under conditions of fairly rapid subsidence.While the use of the coals is at present restricted to combustion, most have pronounced coking properties, as would be predicted from their petrographic composition and reflectance. However, the high mineral content of the coals would be a limiting factor in their use for coke-making.INTRODUCTIONDuring the last ten years, the Division of Coal Research, Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization has carried out an extensive investigation of Australian coals, providing a wide range of analyses of most of the important of them. Special attention has been given in recent years to Queensland coals.Most seams were sampled as a number of subsections, enabling the internal variations, as well as the overall properties, to be assessed. INTRODUCTION The control of nuisance water in a mine is extremely important; left uncontrolled, nuisance water can have a severe effect on haulage, ventilation, production, and the health and safety of miners. To control water in mines, a four-step process is followed: (1) prevention, (2) collection, (3) transportation, and (4) treatment. This chapter will be devoted to the collection and transportation of mine water because prevention is usually dictated by pre-mining conditions and initial planning, while treatment is variable and highly site specific. A mine drainage system is nothing more than a collection of gathering points (sumps), machines that impart energy to the fluid (pumps), transportation ducts (pipes), and control devices (fittings, valves, etc.). A pump does not pull the fluid up the suction pipe; atmospheric or external pressure pushes the liquid up the suction pipe to the pump. All references in this chapter will be to centrifugal pumps, due to their popularity for mine drainage. PUMP CHARACTERISTIC CURVES The performance of a pump is plotted on a graph as an indication of its characteristic. To develop the data points, a test facility similar to that shown in Fig. 1 is established. The calibrated Venturi meter is used to measure quantity, the Bourdon gage measures pressure, and the wattmeter measures power input. Various discharge pressures are obtained by throttling with a gate valve in the discharge pipe. Quantity and power are measured at each of these pressure levels, giving the necessary data for plotting the characteristic curves. Fig. 2 shows a typical characteristic curve for a centrifugal pump. Notice that pressure is measured as so many feet of vertical water column above the outlet level, or head. Knowing the quantity (in gallons per minute), head (in feet), and power input (brake horsepower), the pump's efficiency can be plotted based upon the following relationship:

Upon completion of the 6,200 m (20,340 lineal ft; lft) North Tunnel drive for the Portland East Side Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) Tunnel project in Portland, OR, the slurry tunnel boring machine (TBM) had to be returned from the Port Center shaft at Swan Island to the Opera shaft at the main mining site for the 2,700 m (8,860 lft) South Tunnel drive. At the Port Center shaft, the main 513-t (565-st) TBM and TBM tailshield were hoisted out of the shaft in two pieces using four 200-t (220-st) strand jacks mounted on a 635-t (700-st) hydraulic boom gantry system supported by Emmert International?s custom gantry tracks designed to span the shaft. After lifting the TBM components out of the shaft, the gantry system loaded the TBM components onto two Goldhofer platform trailers, which then transported the TBM and tailshield to a barge using a roll-on/roll-off method.

The reduction process of pre-oxidized ilmenite concentrate powder in 30%CO–70%N2 atmosphere was characterized by thermogravimetric and differential thermogravimetric (TG-DTG) analysis system at the temperature from 1073 to1223 K. The isothermal reduction results show that the reduction process is divided into three stages and the corresponding apparent activation energies are obtained by iso-conversional method and model-fitting method, respectively. For the first stage, the conversion degree increases sharply with increasing time, and the reduction process is controlled by the random nucleation and subsequent growth model (A2 model). For the second stage, the conversion degree increases slowly with increasing time, and the reduction process is controlled by the diffusion of carbon monoxide in the reduced layer (D1 model). For the third stage, the reduction processes at different temperatures are controlled by the diffusion of carbon monoxide in the reduced layer (1073 K and D1 model), phase boundary chemical reaction (1123 K and R2 model), random nucleation and subsequent growth (1173 to 1223 K, A2, and A3 models), respectively. For the whole reduction process, the apparent activation energies obtained by iso-conversional method and model-fitting method are 71.72 and 31.92 kJ mol−1 , respectively

This Bureau of Mines publication consists of an overview of the mine waste management research currently being conducted by the Bureau. The following papers, given at a Technology Transfer Workshop, emphasize the increasing importance of research related to the safety and environmental considerations of mine waste disposal In recent years. Current work related to legislation passed in the last 10 years and their subsequent standards includes the development of adequate monitoring systems, development of stability and seepage prediction and control techniques, control of runoff water, and control of leaching solutions. Selected topics are included here that cover coal mine waste disposal, embankment slope stability monitoring, flow failures of mine tailings impoundments, and controlled burnout of abandoned coal mine fires. The projects described provide a current documentation of problems being addressed.
