"IT WOULD TAKE a braver man than I to try to forecast the future of mining exploration far into Canada's second century. Even to look ahead ten or twenty-five years we must review the figures of the fairly recent past -and I have found this quite a time-consuming but interesting job -in order to find trends and project them into future years. The trends to which I will refer are: firstly, the annual expenditure on exploration and its relation to value of output; secondly, the discovery rate and its relation to production initiations; and thirdly, the methods by which discoveries have been, and will be, made. Exploration Expenditures Figures on the annual expenditure on mining exploration in Canada have been collected and published for some years by the Do-minion Bureau of Statistics. These have some unavoidable limitations; e.g., in the varying definition between one company and another of what comprises ""Exploration"" and in the difficulty of getting complete returns. However, although the actual figure for a given year may be subject to question, I believe that the relative figures from one year to another are reasonably reliable. There is also a lapse of time between the collection of data and publication -the last published figures are for the year 1963. In bringing the figures up to date to 1966 I have canvassed eight of the larger mining and exploration companies and obtained their figures for 1963 to 1966 inclusive, and then averaged these for each year and applied the progression to the 1963 figures."

As part of a long-term study of titanium minerals processing being undertaken by the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre, techniques have been developed to measure the resistivity of ilmenite, rutile, zircon and other associated minerals. The techniques have proven reproducible and have allowed the measurement of resistivity under conditions of varying temperature, surface condition and surface moisture adsorption. The measured values can be linked to the separability of the minerals in the dry plant, and hence are useful as a diagnostic test for existing plants when performance deteriorates, or for greenfield sites to investigate potential problems. One of the major problems in electrical separation of titanium minerals is surface coating on the mineral grains. Coatings can make normally conductive minerals such as ilmenite and leucoxene behave much more like non-conductors. Electrical separation of surface contaminated ilmenite from non-conductors then becomes extremely difficult unless the surface contaminant is first removed. The resistivity measurement technique was used to evaluate the effect of surface cleaning on the resistivity of ilmenite and zircon from a Western Australian deposit which will shortly be in production. Ten different attritioning methods were evaluated, ranging from simple rinsing inwater to chemical attritioning in sulphuric acid combined with ultrasonic leaching. A roasting and quenching step was also investigated. As would be expected, the gentler treatments, such as rinsing in water or Calgon, had only amoderate effect on the ilmenite surface coatings. Ilmenite resistivity decreased by about 1 order of magnitude from 5.6 x108?m to between 2.5 and 4.4 x107?m. More intense treatments had a much more pronounced effect. The most effective, reduced ilmenite resistivity to 6.5 x105?m or three orders of magnitude. Zircon was relatively unaffected by any of the attritioning methods, with only a small increase in resistivity observed from 8.0 x1012?m to 2 x1013 ?m. The results show that measurement of mineral resistivity allows the effect of surface treatments to be easily quantified in a way that has benefits for greenfield site development where only small samples are available for testing. The effect of surface moisture has also been investigated using resistivity measurements. Measurements were made on zircon in an environmental chamber in which both humidity and temperature could be closely controlled. Zircon resistivity at 60 deg C decreased from 6 x1011?m at 5% relative humidity to 8 x108?m at 95% humidity. Moisture content and moisture re-adsorption from dry of zircon and number of other minerals were measured using a Mettler moisture analyser. Zircon adsorbed the least amount of surface moisture (0.05–0.09%) but re-adsorbed moisture from dry the fastest, reaching 98% of the original level in 10 minutes. Leucoxene adsorbed the most moisture (0.67%), but was much slower re-adsorbing this moisture from the dry state, reaching only 63% of the original level in 10 minutes. The difference was attributed to the surface characteristics of the grains, the leucoxene being much more porous than the zircon examined. The resistivities and differing rates of moisture adsorption can be used to quantify the effects of changes in atmospheric conditions of the performance of electrical separation in dry plants.

Two events during the past decade have combined to effectively alter the role of the geologist working in Papua New Guinea. The gold boom of the 1980s resulted in a substantial increase in the general awareness at village level of mining companies, gold and landowner issues, and as a consequence of the Bougainville tragedy, landowners are also very much aware of the potential problems of a mining operation in their area. Landowners know they have the power to remove a company from a project area, and government has shown itself to be virtually powerless and unable to help the company effectively. During a considerable proportion of a project's development time, the project geologist is viewed in the eyes of the local community as the 'company'. Good landowner relationships are nurtured over a reasonable time period and the input of the geologist is significant in determining the eventual fate of company-landowner relationships. The initial impressions of the company, gathered by the local community, will have a far reaching impact on the nature and direction of their future exchanges with the company.

Com a redução da oferta de minério granulado de boa qualidade no mercado mundial e as restrições ambientais à sinterização, as pelotas de minério de ferro passaram a ocupar um papel importante como matéria prima para produção de ferro primário. Entretanto, embora apresentem maior resistência à degradação, as pelotas ainda sofrem com este problema, embora em menor magnitude, quando comparadas com granulados. Pode-se identificar a degradação das pelotas de minério de ferro em duas etapas, durante o manuseio e sob redução. Uma vez que vários estudos já analisaram a degradação durante o manuseio, a degradação durante a redução torna-se um assunto relevante e pouco explorado. Assim, o presente trabalho avaliou as energias envolvidas no movimento da carga ao longo de um forno de redução direta do tipo Midrex, usando o método dos elementos discretos. Para isso, foi utilizado o software EDEM® para obtenção das energias dissipadas durante as colisões das partículas. Aplicando estas energias ao modelo mecanicista proposto por Tavares e Carvalho [4] para fragmentação das partículas foi possível estimar a taxa de geração de finos no interior do forno. Estes resultados foram utilizados na previsão da degradação mecânica de pelotas no interior do forno, que previu a geração de 1,2 a 2,6% de finos gerados em um forno Minimod®, dependendo das premissas usadas.

Exposure?response relationships between the relative risk of lung cancer and quantitative measures of exposure to asbestos are available from a number of epidemiological studies. Meta-analyses of these relationships have been published by Lash et al. (1997) [Lash, T.L., Crouch, E.A.C., Green, L.C., 1997. A meta-analysis of the relation between cumulative exposure to asbestos and relative risk of lung cancer. Occup. Environ. Med. 54, 254?263] and Hodgson and Darnton (2000) [Hodgson, J.T., Darnton, A., 2000. The quantitative risks of mesothelioma and lung cancer in relation to asbestos exposure. Ann. Occup. Hyg. 44, 565?601]. In this paper, the risks derived in these meta-analyses have been compared. Lash et al., concentrated on process and found that the risk of lung cancer increased as the asbestos is refined by processing. Hodgson and Darnton concentrated on fibre type and found that the risk was highest for exposure to amphibole asbestos (crocidolite and amosite), lowest for chrysotile and intermediate for mixed exposure. Some of the differences between the conclusions from the two meta-analyses are a consequence of the choice of studies included. The range of asbestos types included in the studies in the analysis of Hodgson and Darnton was wider than that in Lash et al., enabling differences between fibre types to be analyzed more readily. There are situations where occupational exposure to chrysotile asbestos has shown no detectable increase in risk of lung cancer. Under an extremely aggressive schedule, final design of 13.5 km (8.4 miles) miles of 8.2 m (27 ft) diameter deep rock tunnel, 322 ML/day (85 million gallons / day)submersible pumping station and associated facilities were accomplished ahead of a federal court mandated consent decree schedule. Challenges overcome by the project team in enabling timely completion of the construction documents will be presented. Discussion includes evolution of final design, consideration of future O&M requirements, and risks identified for construction and operations, together with measures to manage and proactively prepare for such risks.

Ilmenite-bearing paleo-beach deposits were discovered in Jylland, Denmark using a combination of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), portable X-ray fluorescence (XMET), bulk XRF analyses, Computer Controlled Scanning Electron Microscopy (CCSEM), and wire line logging. The Miocene-age paleo-beach deposits are located below a thin Quaternary cover in a region of very moderate relief and essentially no outcrop demanding unique approaches in exploration. Initially, an isopach map of the Quaternary is prepared from existing water well data. A geological model for likely occurrence of Miocene paleo-beach deposits is generated and the coincidence of thin Quaternary cover and potential paleo-beach deposits define targets for detailed exploration. The defined targets are traversed with GPR to identify paleo-beach structures which are then used to define a drilling program. This methodology located a paleo-barrier island at the Vorslunde location with more than 10% ilmenite in the sand. During the drilling process, the TiO2 and heavy mineral contents of the sand were logged every meter with a portable XRF unit (XMET) and subsequently calibrated more accurately by comparison to bulk XRF and CCSEM analyses for selected samples. The bulk XRF data also provided more complete compositional information. Insitu determination of geology, heavy mineral abundance, and corroboration of the XRF logging was done using wire line logs, a combination of spectral gamma and induction conductivity logs. Detailed characteristics (abundance, grain size, shape) and chemical composition of minerals was determined by the GEUS CCSEM methodology (Frei et al, this vol.). The average weight percent TiO2 for all Ti-minerals is 62%, 60% excluding rutile. That elevated TiO2 content (>> ilmenite stoichiometric value, ca. 50 %) indicates that ilmenite experienced an iron-leaching environment. The source of the sand deposit was investigated by dating contained zircon. The results show that the likely sources of zircon are in southern Norway and southwestern Sweden with common zircon ages of ca 1100 Ma. and 1500 Ma.

These interactions include technical exchanges, and this is at the heart of MetSoc’s service to its members. The theme of this 53rd Conference of Metallurgists is Prosperity Through Process Advancements. There are thirteen symposia at this year’s conference mainly focused on processing from extractive fields, to materials and the environment. Supporting these topics are the plenary, poster session, and trade show plus opportunities for socializing at functions like the opening reception and the awards banquet.Many people have contributed to this conference, from the authors and presenters to the organizers and the generous sponsors. They are all gratefully acknowledged for their quality work over the last two years. There was a time when an occasional failure of a tailings embankment was considered an acceptable risk associated with mining activities. This is not the case anymore. A major tailings failure today could result in the indictment of mine officials, huge fines and a possible site closure due to the loss of operating permits. As a result of this changed operational environment, tailings disposal facilities must be operated with these potential consequences in mind. Physical controls for tailings embankments are prohibitively expensive. However, the nuclear industry has developed a system of administrative controls as an alternative to physical controls. Administrative controls may be defined as control of actions, through organizations and management, using written procedures, record keeping, review and audit to assure operation of a facility in a safe manner (10 CFR 50). Administrative controls can reduce the cost of operating tailings impoundments, as well as increase the level of confidence in these facilities.

The Pipeline gold ore body was discovered in Lander County, NV in March 1991. Construction of the new mine and mill did not start until early March 1996. The $289-million project was placed on a fast-track development schedule upon completion of permitting and corporate approval. The mine and mill were commissioned 11 months after the start of construction and the project ended up $40 million under budget. Project design and construction management were provided by Placer Dome Project Development Division (PDD). History The Cortez Joint Venture has operated in northeast Lander County since the late 1960s. The business structure is comprised of 60% Placer Dome and 40%Kennecott Exploration. Throughout the years, production has been from several small open-pit deposits— Cortez, Horse Canyon, Gold Acres and now Pipeline.

Gold Fields Australia is constructing two major ventilation shafts at the Wallaby gold mine in Western Australia. The new ventilation shafts are required to facilitate the long term ventilation strategy for the mine, thereby allowing continued extraction of ore beyond 1000 m below the surface. The construction work has involved all of the challenges that shaft construction can throw up, including challenging geotechnical conditions, unexpected high water inflows and major circulation loss during pilot hole drilling for raise boring. An extensive geotechnical and hydrological investigation program was undertaken prior to awarding the shaft construction contracts. While most of the risks were identified, several proved to be much more challenging than expected. The shaft construction methods included conventional sinking into the fresh rock profile in each shaft, followed by raise bore pilot hole drilling and reaming. A headframe was constructed for the first shaft, which was sunk to 92 m with a stage suspended in the shaft to facilitate the concrete lining and provide rope guides for the kibble winding. Drawing from experience when sinking the first shaft, additional ground pre-conditioning was implemented for the second shaft, which was pre-supported with continuous piles to 28 m followed by sinking to 50 m using a crane instead of winders and a headframe. Following the conventional sinking through the weathered zone in each shaft, the shafts were completed using a raise bore. The first shaft utilised a riser pipe and rotary vertical drilling system (RVDS) with the second shaft having utilised a dual rotary rig for pilot hole drilling. "INTRODUCTION This investigation was undertaken to determine the response of Birmingham (Alabama) red-iron ore to heavy-medium concentration. Specifically, the work involved a study of the efficiency of the process in separating coarse gangue diluents from the ore and an endeavor to evaluate the potential economic results. The investigative work was not intended, nor is it to be construed, to be adequately exhaustive in scope to enable immediate plant construction. Rather, the primary objective was to determine the grade of ore that could be produced by heavy-medium treatment and the resulting indicative or tentative benefits to be derived from such treatment. The latter, in turn, would determine the merits of the more exhaustive study that would be required for an ultimate decision on the heavy-medium treatment of the ores.The problem of avoiding excessive contamination of red-iron ores by shale and/or ferruginous sandstone has been before the operators of the iron mining industry of the Birmingham, Alabama, district for many years. Within the last two decades, increased mechanization of mining methods has increased this contamination to a considerable degree. In fact, general utilization of scraper loading and other mechanical methods of mining, in conjunction with small increases in the natural insoluble content of the ores, in some cases has actually resulted in the production of ""acid"" or excessively insoluble ore, where ""basic"" or excessively lime ores were produced formerly.The contaminating materials are derived largely from roof spells and natural parting seams in the ore, a condition that to some extent has been aggravated by the irregularity of the ore beds. The latter have been subjected to both primary and secondary folding in many places. Considerable faulting has taken place, also. In many localities these conditions render virtually impossible complete avoidance of ore contamination from the over and underlying sandstones and shales. However, in a few localities, where the ore beds are less disturbed and shale partings are absent, mining can and is being accomplished with relatively little dilution."

The Bureau of Mines has used Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-1R) to study in situ reactions of aqueous solutions of potassium ethylxanthate with CU(II)-and Pb(II)-activated sphalerite plates, in which the plates were both the infrared-transparent windows and the reacting surfaces. A copper (I) ethylxanthate formed predominantly with Cu(II)-activated sphalerite, regardless of the activation time. The products formed on Pb(II)-activated sphalerite depended on the activation times; a short activation time (30 min) yielded a lead ethylxanthate-like product, but a long activation time (90 min) yielded a considerable amount of dixanthogen.

"Milling operations in northern Saskatchewan’s Athabasca Basin have produced uranium continuously since 1975. Over that period, the Athabasca Basin has been one of the world’s premier uranium camps, yielding more than 660 million lb of U3O8. In this paper, the author describes former and current milling operations and discusses why and how the milling process has changed and developed over the past 35 years. The author’s considerations for the future of uranium extraction in the Athabasca Basin close out the paper.INTRODUCTIONThe roughly oval Athabasca Basin in northern Saskatchewan occupies nearly one third of the surface area of the Saskatchewan Shield. Its sandstone-like deposits lie unconformably on the older basement. The basin hosts many high-grade unconformity-type uranium deposits(Saskatchewan Energy and Resources, 2010) for which the Athabasca Basin is world famous. Uranium production in the Athabasca Basin has come from four mills. In the order of startup these are Rabbit Lake, Cluff Lake, Key Lake and McClean Lake. General data (AREVA, 2010; Cameco, 2010; Denison 2010) for each mill are shown in Table 1."

This paper describes a situation that many drilling and blasting contractors have found themselves in – a client?s fear of the use of explosives. In the summer of 2007 Blasting Services Ltd was asked to undertake some drilling and blasting work in an abandoned quarry that was being restored for a housing development. Previous quarrying operations had left a series of overhangs that were considered unsafe and required removing. The site contractor considered that the best and safest way to carry out this work was by drilling and blasting. Blasting Services Ltd, with the technical assistance of Exchem Explosives, designed a drilling and blasting regime to accomplish this work with a series of trim blasts. The design took into account the close proximity of a structure in very poor condition and the imposed vibration limit of 6.0 mm/s (0.24 i.p.s.). The faces were profiled, holes drilled and explosives ordered. A few days before the first blast was due to be carried out the client decided that the poor condition of the nearby structure meant that the use of explosives could not be permitted. This decision was made despite the blast design indicating that the vibration level would be well below the 6.0 mm/s (0.24 i.p.s.) limit.

The use of activated carbon for extracting gold and silver from pregnant cyanide solution and pulp has been investigated many times. The primary advantage of this use of activated carbon is that .the dissolved values can be recovered from slimy ore pulps or from slime portions of ore without settling and thickening or filtering. The loaded carbon is removed from the barren pulp, and the pulp can then be discarded. Activated carbon has been used recently in treating gold ores containing very little soluble silver. When the carbon was loaded with a suitable amount of gold, the silver load was negligible. The remaining problems concerned the removal of the gold from the carbon, the recovery of the gold as bullion, and the reuse of the unloaded carbon. As described in a recent report, a method that solved these problems was developed. The gold-laden carbon was leached with caustic sodium sulfide solution and the gold simultaneously recovered by electrolysis. Both the carbon and the spent solution can be reused. That process was applicable to gold-laden carbon only. It was not applicable to carbon carrying silver, because sodium sulfide does not leach silver from carbon but "fixes" it. It has been necessary, therefore, to develop a modified process for the removal or desorption of both gold and silver from loaded carbon. This modi¬fied process permits the use of activated carbon for extracting both gold and silver from gold ores carrying enough silver to have economical interest or in which silver may be the predominating value.

This paper discusses in situ studies conducted at an Illinois Basin room-and-pillar coal mine to evaluate the performances of three different types of bolts under similar geologic conditions. The bolt types considered were the fully grouted passive rebar (FGPR), the resin-assisted mechanical anchor (RMAB), and the fully grouted tension rebar (FGTR). During the evaluations, the three types of bolts were installed in a single entry covering a span of three contiguous pillars with almost identical geologic conditions. The performances of the three types of bolts were investigated by instrumentting the bolts prior to installation as primary supports on cycle. Additional data on roof behavior was collected with extensometers and shear meters placed near the instrumented bolts. Excluding some time lapse right after installation, the performance evaluation of the three bolt systems was based on the data collected for over a year. Based on this study, it was found that the axial loads measured in the different bolt types did not show any identifiable patterns under the prevailing geological conditions at the mine. Therefore, the assumption that active bolts must be superior to passive ones is not always valid. Even though the studied mine did not have any thinly laminated, weak rocks in the immediate roof, the passive bolts performed as well as the active systems.

N order to attempt to arrive at a better under-Jl standing of the whole basic problem of sintering, these remarks will serve as an introduction for discussion that is included and will, perhaps, help to isolate specific questions which need to be answered or to suggest some definite avenues of investigation which should be followed. To bring some sort of logical order into the presentation, I will consider the various types of interaction between the metal to be sintered and the atmosphere which surrounds it, depending upon whether the phenomena are essentially chemical or physical in nature. For example, when the only necessary criterion for the satisfactory sintering of a certain powder is the removal of an oxide skin, then the problem of choosing a suitable atmosphere is primarily chemical; however, if a special surface condition as a consequence of the oxide skin removal is necessary for particularly effective sintering, then the problem becomes a physical one. Of course, the two aspects overlap considerably, but it may be possible to make a distinction in principle if not in practice. The chemical characteristics of the phenomena will be emphasized, since these are the better known. Metal-gas reactions involved in sintering are controlled primarily by the thermodynamics of the processes involved. In which direction will a reaction go and how far before it stops? The answer is to be found in the magnitude of the free energy change associated with the reaction. If a constituent is to be removed from the specimen as completely as possible or if a constituent is to be formed in the specimen as completely as possible, then one chooses conditions which are far from equilibrium so that the reaction is driven toward completion. On the other hand, if the composition is to be maintained at a desired value, then conditions are adjusted as closely as possible to the equilibrium point. This aspect of the problem is susceptible to quite precise analysis, provided, of course, that the significant reactions can be recognized and the required thermodynamic data are available. Conversely, if one asks how fast the reaction goes or how far it proceeds in a given time, the answer is frequently much more difficult to answer in quantitative terms. Yet the rate-con trolling factors of the reactions may be of primary importance in the success of a particular operation, especially where competing processes are at work. Both equilibrium and rate factors must be understood if a clear picture is to be obtained. For instance, in a process for carburizing titanium dioxide, is the difficulty of obtaining a stoichiometric Tic due to a true limitation of the equilibrium or simply to a very slow rate of reaction? An example of this appears in the work of Kalish and Mazza.' They showed that the oxygen content of sintered iron compacts was lower when sintered in pure hydrogen than in the case where the hydrogen was diluted with either argon or nitrogen. The equilibrium oxygen content of the iron would be the same in the two cases, since it is determined by the ratio of the partial pressures of water vapor and hydrogen and this pressure ratio is unchanged by dilution. The rate of oxygen removal, however, under the conditions of a constantly replaced furnace atmosphere, depends upon diffusion and thus upon the concentration of hydrogen in the furnace atmosphere. Possibly the clearest way to illustrate the interplay of these two factors is to consider in more detail some of the typical metal-gas reactions.
