The results from metallurgical test programs are used in feasibility studies for design of new plants and brownfield expansions, in long term mine plans, and to make decisions in an operating plant. There are many elements which contribute to a well-constructed test work program. Ultimately, understanding the accuracy and precision of the test work results is critical to ensuring good decision-making at various phases of a project.Every resource drilling and associated assaying program will have a quality assurance / quality control (QA/QC) component, however this often seems to be overlooked in metallurgical testing programs. The principles of “international standard” or “certified reference material” samples and replicate/duplicate testing can be applied to metallurgical programs, although there are metallurgical-specific considerations in both generating and analysing the data.This paper will describe the QA/QC program carried out within the Olympic Dam geometallurgy program. It will present results in the form of case studies from ten years of testing of replicates and bulk reference samples for industry-standard comminution tests as well as laboratory flotation and leaching tests. It details both common and unique engineering methods by which the respirable dust, which is generated in coal mines, can be controlled. This document was compiled by Apt, Bramer, Conrad and Associates, Inc. under contract number H0111464, issued by the U. S. Bureau of Mines and forms Volume II of the final report. This contract was authorized by and executed pursuant to the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety. Act of 1969 (P. I. 91-173; 83 Stat. 742).

A new, powerful model is presented that focuses on plant logistics and scheduling aspects of the smelting, converting, fire refining and casting operations at the Horne smelter. This plant complex is the largest custom copper smelter in North America. It handles a wide range of feeds and utilizes a number of proprietary continuous and batch technologies that require good scheduling in order to maximize plant capacity and efficiency. The present model was developed by Xstrata Process Support, in collaboration with the Horne smelter, and uses the Arena® software to evaluate the impact of a number of plant variables on the annual copper capacity of the plant. Model development was carried out by Xstrata Process Support, in collaboration with the Horne smelter, through the effective combination of process chemistry knowledge and detailed knowledge of the plant operation (including all material flows and transfers, as well as information such as operating on-line times, plant stoppages and also scheduled and unscheduled maintenance activities). A number of case studies were then examined, including the impact of anode furnace and casting cycle times on annual copper capacity and the impact of a one-crane mode of operation in the converter aisle, which normally operates with two cranes in service. The model predictions were found to match actual plant results very well. The present modelling of plant logistics and the scheduling aspects were found to add important dimensions at the plant with regard to projections of the real-life plant capacity. As demonstrated in the present case, this type of model and application can have a significant impact on optimizing operations at a given plant. This impact is particularly important in the current market environment, where emphasis is on maximizing plant output and lowering costs. These models can help yield the easily obtained gains that are clearly desirable in these times. Xstrata Process Support has developed Arena models for other operations and is available to explore new applications for a win-win situation at other plants, including mines and concentrator operations.

IN 1922, the writer communicated to the Institute a paper entitled The Development of the Coal Industry in Canada (1), which summarized the considerations set out in a series of papers (2) concerned with coal-mining in Canada which he had presented in 1920 and 1921. This paper contained a forecast by decades, commencing 1920, of Canadian coal production, importation, consumption, and exports, based on anticipated rate of population increase, and continuation of the gradual increase in the per capita rate of coal consumption in Canada that had taken place every year up to 1920. Falls of Ground is one of the highest causes of incidents, accidents and fatal injuries in our mines today. These falls of ground may occur as soon as the face is exposed after blasting or after machine cutting. The falls of ground can also occur after support has been installed. There are many reasons why these falls occur before and after supporting of the face. It is therefore important to support the exposed face as soon as possible to prevent the falls of ground. It is also very important to support the face with the correct support products and to support the face as designed and required by the mining engineers. The possible reasons for falls of ground, possible support methods and the products available will be discussed in this presentation. In typical conventional narrow vein stoping operations, the use of conventional temporary support components to offer some support to workers, whilst the permanent and generally more elaborate support system gets installed or constructed, still results in injuries to people. The use of consumable.-electrode arc melting as a production technology is growing. One advantageous feature of this process is that it avoids ingot contamination by soluble crucible materials by employing a chilled metal crucible. Because the thermal balance under these conditions is rather delicate and does not necessarily provide a favorable environment for solidification, catastrophic imbalances can occur. The effectiveness and mechanistic roles of various factors are mostly unknown, and more intelligent insight regarding the distribution of temperature and heat is needed. Experience has provided several pertinent observations, some of which are quite superficial. The most meaningful data have resulted from studies of molten pool shapes and sizes and from measurements of heat flow through crucible walls. Overall experience, intuitively interpreted and supplemented, is sufficient nevertheless as a basis for a boundary-value treatment of the problem. A mathematical analysis based on a separation of variables, using conventional differential equation methods, provides a useful solution. For a cylindrical ingot, the temperature varies as a Bessel function of an argument proportional to the radius and as an exponential function of longitudinal position. Trial calculations using the problem solution seem to verify the general correctness of the result as compared with experience. The role and nature of solution parameters are also clarified, though not entirely resolved. It is revealed that the barrier to heat flow at the ingot-crucible surface has a prominent influence. Utility of the model embodied in the problem solution is readily demonstrated by considering a variety of contemporary questions about arc melting, and it is hoped that utility can be enhanced by improvement of the model.

Under Bureau of Mines Contract H0122007, Telcom, Inc., with the assistance of Fenix & Scisson, Inc., conducted a 17-month research and development project aimed at provid¬ing a field-test model of a guidance system for use with the Bureau of Mines Probe Drill. The Probe Drill is a part of the Bureau's Mine Rescue System developed under Contract H0101262. Volume I of this report is subdivided into seven sections. Volume II consists of a number of supporting appendices. In addition, there were delivered under the Contract, a number of other documents which are referenced in the text. Section 1 deals with essential contract information, Program Background, and a general system description. Section 2 covers the project chronology in brief. Section 3 is a digest of design considerations and implementation related to the requirements of the Contract. Section 4 is a description of the System, including illustrations of the hardware, and software. Section 5 is devoted to Operation and Maintenance. Para. 5.1 describes step-by-step field assembly and disassembly of the downhole unit. Para. 5.2 covers Operation. Para. 5.3 covers various aspects of maintenance from the lowest field echelon possible. Higher level maintenance must be accomplished in the laboratory, for the present field-test model. Para. 5.4 covers system calibration. Para. 5.5 covers detailed step-by-step operational sequences. Section 6 covers the results of the field testing, post-test evaluation, and recommendations. Essentially, we conclude that the present hardware (field-test model) has proven every aspect of system performance, but failed to provide reliable assurance of an operationally ready system. Telcom, therefore, recommends a three-phase continuing effort devised to provide the operationally-ready model of the system.

The Joint Conference Committee reported that the American Institute of Metals had accepted the invitation to form the Institute of Metals Division of this Institute. The Committee on Publications of the Institute of Metals was added to the Committee on Publications of the A. I. M. E. Exchange of one volume of Transactions of the A. I. M. E. at reduced price to members of the British Institute of Metals was authorized, in return for the reduced price given to our Institute of Metals Division on the annual proceedings of the British Institute.

This paper provided an overview of characteristics of limonite ores as well as their influence on sintering performance. Evaluation experiments focusing on basic characteristics, granulation characteristics, and high temperature sintering characteristics had been conducted by using two types of limonite ores, then the principles of high effective utilization technology of limonite ores were discussed, and the sintering pot tests were conducted. Limonite ores possessed low total iron content, high combined water content, high SiO2 content, large average particle size, low adhering particles proportion, high porosity, high water absorption rate, short water absorbing time, poor granulation ability, high melt formation ability, low melt fluidity ability, low melt penetration ability, high melt absorption ability, low bonding phase strength, and high forming ability of SFCA. By taking the technical measures of ore-proportioning optimization, increasing the proportion of burntlime and segmentation granulation, the usage of limonite ores could reach 50% in sintering.

A committee of three was appointed to draft a suitable resolution of memorial of the services of Joseph Esrey Johnson, Jr. The committee consists of Joseph W. Richards, Chairman, J. V. N. Dorr and Allen H. Rogers. William R. Walker was elected a Director in place of J. E. Johnson, Jr., and Edwin Ludlow was elected a member of the Executive Committee in his stead. George C. Stone was appointed Chairman of the Committee on Membership in place of Mr. Johnson. The following resolutions were then adopted: RESOLVED, That a special business meeting of the Institute be and the same hereby is appointed to be, held at the office of the Institute, No. 29 West 39th Street, Borough of Manhattan, City of New York, on the 27th day of June, 1919, it 8.30 o'clock in the P. M. to consider and take action upon the proposal to change the name of the Institute to "American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, Incor-porated," and the further proposal to extend the corporate purposes of the Institute so that it shall, in addition to its other powers, be empowered to promote the arts and sciences connected with the economic production of the useful minerals and metals, and the welfare of, those employed in these industries, by all lawful means.

New and developing communication systems en-able underground miners to, not only connect to the surface from an increased communication coverage area, but also to be discovered in the event of an emergency. Communication and tracking systems are required by the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Ad-ministration (MSHA) regulations, aiming to enhance health and safety and routine production in underground operations. Modeling a mine?s potential communication coverage area will increase overall coverage and efficiency of the communication network itself. Modeling the propagation of wireless communications enables ideal broadcast locations to be found when designing a communications network. Strategic placement of broad-cast devices results in a reliable communication network that can better withstand disruption in daily operation and during a time of emergencies. Research on wireless communication in mines has been ongoing since 1922, when the U.S. Bureau of Mines performed experiments in its experimental mine in Bruceton, PA (Schiffbauer & Brune, 2006a). Ac cording to Dobroski and Stolarczyk (1982), ?as early as 1922, Bureau of Mines experiments showed that radio propagation in mines was possible but not practical.? In 2006, the underground communication technologies available to the mining industry had inherent problems that limited communication capabilities. Because harsh underground mine environments significantly reduce line of sight and propagation range and introduce power and safety concerns, the overall effectiveness of underground communication technologies were limited. An investigation was conducted to determine the relationship between ASTM and Micum tumbler data and to develop equations that would enable the conversion of data from one test method for comparison with those determined by the other , and thereby facilitate the international exchange of data . Relative strengths of 18 commercially produced cokes were determined by ASTM and Micum tumblers and ASTM shatter test . Two of the samples were coke produced for foundry use , and two were produced in beehive ovens . The remaining 14 samples were produced for blast furnace consumption and had ASTM tumbler stabilities of 36 to 58. Statistical procedures were used to relate the three test methods and also to evaluate the effect of charge weights , top sizes of coke , and types of screens specified by the two standard tumbler procedures , square - hole wire mesh for the ASTM tumbler and punched round - hole for the Micum . A significant result was that the data obtained with like screens have a higher degree of correlation with a smaller standard deviation than data from the screens specified for each tumbler .

For many years the Federal Bureau of Mines has been investigating fires and explosions in mines, tunnels, buildings, and hazardous processes of various kinds. Means and methods for controlling and extinguishing mine fires and preventing explosions and other accidents in many hazardous processes require the collection and analysis of samples of the atmospheres surrounding the sources of ignition. Complex mixtures of gases often encountered in mines, tunnels, and industrial processes may well presage imminent danger from explosions. This report discusses some practicable methods of utilizing the analyses of samples of complex mixtures of gases in their application to the many problems that arise from their presence.

The property of the Park City Consolidated Mines Co. is situated in the northeast part of the Park City dining district 1 mile east of the town of Park City. The elevation at the collar of No. 1 shaft is 7,250 feet. Park City is a town of approximately 4,500 population lying about 30 miles east of Salt Lake City. The two are connected by an oiled State Highway, which is cleared of snow in winter and maintained in first-class con¬dition by the State throughout the year. The district is served by branches of the Denver & Rio Grande Western and Union Pacific Railroads, each operating on a daily' schedule, except Sunday. These two railroads have constructed 1 ½ miles of joint track from the town to the Park City Consolidated Mines Co. loading tipple, located 200 feet from the portal of the adit that leads to No. 1 shaft.

"The Construction Group is responsible for the construction of all of Placer Dome’s major projects and contributes to the development of most major feasibility studies. This group includes an international collection of Placer Dome people who have built mines in Papua New Guinea, Australia, Chile, the United States and Canada. This paper outlines the changing role of the Construction Group from the early days of single projects to today, when several projects are in various phases from feasibility to construction. The projects’ total annual budgets have from time to time exceeded one billion dollars. IntroductionAs the competition increases globally between the major gold mining companies, the impetus continues to build mines at the lowest cost with the shortest construction schedule. Placer Dome has more than met that challenge by building mines around the world at a pace that was not contemplated 15 or 20 years ago. Since 1960, Placer Dome has built 30 mines and expansions at a cost of nearly 4.5 billion dollars.In the last six years alone, Placer Dome has built 14 mines and expansions, worth 2.6 billion dollars. The company’s success is due primarily to Experience, Innovation, People and Standards.The diversity between projects, let alone the pace, has been a challenge. Placer Dome has built mines around the world in a variety of extreme climates and distinctive cultures. The construction experience gained from these projects has allowed Placer Dome to develop an extensive knowledge and data base making it easier to “fast track” projects.Through the years Placer Dome has developed a human resource base. It now has an experienced and adaptable core team of people able to set up construction projects and build mines anywhere in the world. By developing standards and systems to support the projects they can act as soon as a new project is approved, and complete the projects quickly and effectively. The result is that Placer Dome now has the construction expertise to build its own mines, giving them the competitive advantage that allows them to design and construct a mine in the least time at the lowest capital cost. This was demonstrated in March 1997 with the completion of the construction of two new mines in 12 months."

The Australian coal industry has undergone sevenfold growth over the last 30 years and since 1985 has been the world's largest coal exporter. Three quarters of Australia's coal production is exported so its future is dependent on it remaining internationally competitive with other energy sources and other coal exporting countries. Coal is likely to increase its share of the energy market during the nine- ties as oil prices increase, new coal-fired capacity is commissioned and some form of nuclear energy is developed which is of acceptable safety standards to the community for use in the 21st century. Gas may take a part of coal's anticipated market share by the Year 2000. While coal exports will increase from China, Colombia, Indonesia and Venezuela and satisfy some of this additional coal demand Australia will also expand its export production, due to its existing advantages. The United States, Canada, South Africa, Poland and USSR seem unlikely to enjoy the same degrees of expansion and some, particularly Poland and USSR, will decline. Australia will always find it difficult to compete in the more distant markets due to levels of ocean freight, although its high quality coals will tend to partly offset such disadvantage.

This is a sampling of the papers presented at the conference, the proceedings can be bought from the SAIMM The technique reported here involves measuring the air pressures generated within sealed boreholes located behind blasts. Results from twelve free face blasts in competent rock environments a represented. There were no instances of high pressure gas penetration, even at distances corresponding to less than one blast burden. Rapidly generated underpressures were measured in most holes, with the magnitudes of the peak pressures decreasing with distance behind the blasts. It has been proposed that the under pressures are the result of new volume created due to crack formation and overall rock mass dilation. The experimental evidence is consistent with this, including a correspondence of the onset times of the peak underpressures with the nominal firing times of the nearest blastholes. New post-blast cracks were observed when using borehole video cameras in the monitoring holes. A calculation of new volume produced within the monitoring holes is proposed as an indicator of damage. While the data exhibit considerable scatter, there is a power function dependence on scaled distance, which resembles that of typical vibration data. The data also lie within the normally quoted vibration regimes for rock damage and are consistent with measured extents of damage. It is concluded that this technique may provide an inexpensive and practical comparative measure of near-field rock damage due to blasting. It is further concluded that gas penetration is not a common phenomenon. Damage appears to be mainly attributable to the nearest blastholes and the control of charge mass in perimeter blastholes is emphasized for damage minimization.
