For research and test data to serve a useful purpose, it is essential that it be derived from some known standard test procedure that allows for comparative analysis as well as independent replication and verification. Fan performance data provided by manufacturers is not absolute, and is influenced by the geometry of the test installation. For these reasons, fan test standards have been prepared in order to establish a clearly defined test procedure that allows for comparison of different fan designs, and also allows for the independent verification of test data. Internationally recognized Standards such as BS848, ISO5801, and AMCA 210 etc. are highly prescriptive, and precisely specify test duct configurations, measurement procedures, measurement planes and instrumentation to be used. Provided the laboratory tests are conducted strictly in accordance with the relevant Standard, the performance data will accurately reflect fan performance within the appropriate tolerances for efficiency, pressure and flow when tested in the defined configuration. Major differences in performance exist between a fan tested in accordance with a Fan Test Standard, and an identical fan installed in a mine ventilation system. The aerodynamic performance of any fan will be influenced by the quality of the fan manufacture, the flow system within which it is operating, the location of measurement planes, and the system stability. The flow distributions present in a standardized Laboratory test are unlikely to be repeated in mine ventilation systems, and this will also disadvantage fan performance. Unless the fan supplier takes all of these influences into account, there will an inevitable reduction in fan aerodynamic performance, and the end user will experience a shortfall in expected flow through the mine. The effect on fan performance can range from minor inconvenience to catastrophic fan failure resulting in major rectification costs and significant loss of mine production.

"In 2015 operations under the ownership and/or management of all Newmont Mining Corporation subsidiaries (Newmont) produced 5.7 Moz of gold and 619 Mlb of copper from mining operations in five countries, with well over 100 Mt of ore processed by various grinding technologies. Processing methods used in the extraction of metals include flotation, oxidation, conventional cyanidation and heap leaching. The grinding technologies applied in milling operations feeding metal recovery processes include conventional wet grinding semi-autogenous grinding (SAG), rod and ball, dry grinding, concentrate regrinding and ultra-fine grinding, and ball milling of high pressure grinding roll product. SAG/ball (SAB) configurations represent the dominant comminution flow sheet within the company and the circuit configurations employed include SAB, SABC-A, SABC-B and single-stage (SS) SAG milling, with SAG mill feed ranging from run-of-mine (ROM) ore through to secondary crusher product. The collective experiences earned from designing, operating and debottlenecking these various comminution circuits provide many lessons that can be applied to the design and optimisation of future operations. This paper provides an overview of Newmont’s diverse comminution circuits, discusses recent performance and offers some insight into optimisation and design considerations based on recent experience in both endeavours.Citation:Giblett, A and Hart, S, 2016. The Crown Building, built circa 1921, is a 26-story iconic building located at West 57th Street and Fifth Avenue in the heart of Manhattan. The paper highlights collaboration between the geotechnical engineer and foundation contractor to develop economical and practical solutions to foundation design and construction challenges associated with this complex redevelopment project. The project includes both below-grade and above-grade expansion of the occupied building, and required undermining the existing foundations, and essentially doubling the foundation loads. The below-grade expansion required surgical foundation work including drilling minicaissons, shoring columns, underpinning, and excavating 20 feet of rock.

New and existing gravity and aeromagnetic data are used to determine the structure of the Waihi region and to investigate any relationship between structure, hydrothermal alteration and epithermal mineralisation. The 24 mGal, 10 km diameter, negative Bouguer gravity anomaly which occurs south of Waihi has been modelled as a I.5 km deep asymmetrical basin. This basin, the Waihi Depression, is interpreted to be infilled with low-density volcanic rocks of the Uretara Formation and Whitianga Group, overlying older andesites of the Waipupu Formation. To the north and west, the margins of the depression are defined by the Waihi and Mangakino Faults, which have been modelled with dips of 45 - 60¦ to the south and west respectively. The southern and eastern boundaries of the Waihi Depression are defined by smooth, shallow dipping (15 - 20¦) boundaries. The Waihi Depression is interpreted as a fault-angle depression, resulting from southeast extension in the early Pliocene. The Waihi Fault is modelled as an approximately E-W feature, located to the south of Waihi. Small 2 - 4 mGal positive Bouguer gravity anomalies occur north and west of the margins of the depression, and correlate with known areas of hydrothermal alteration and areas of low magnetic gradient.

THE CHAIRMAN.- This meeting is under the auspices of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, and I think the germ of the idea originated in the steel business. Last year there was a meeting of prominent people in the steel industry with the idea of getting together and discussing practical phases of their business, so that everybody could contribute and from that there might be benefit derived for the industry. Several months ago when Mr. Bain was in Salt Lake City, he and Mr. Oldright asked me what I, as an individual, thought of it. From that originated this idea of having the copper people come together to discuss reverberatory smelting and all its phases. In starting out, it seemed the best plan to ask members what particular subjects they wished to discuss first; that is, the ones that would be considered more important. We asked Mr. Oldright, or suggested sometime ago that the meeting be postponed until May because May is a lovely month in Salt Lake. There are a number of attractive features around the city. We have a number of smelters here and I think that probably the most of the benefit will be derived from talking in an informal way and visiting the various plants around. the valley. At any rate, speaking as a resident of Salt Lake, I am glad to see all of you gentlemen here, and hope you have an interesting and instructive time. The tentative list of subjects for discussion at this conference is as follows: Construction Walls, etc. Walls, proper design and thickness of brick for various types of charging. Bottoms, construction of. Binding steel, correct weight and arrangement, where thrust of arch should be taken. Refractory materials, feasibility of using different material in various parts of the furnace. Water jackets, where applicable. Should bricks be used inside of same. MCELVENNY.- Over 20 years ago I went back East on a little tour of copper companies to see how copper was handled and fabricated, and I met a Mr. Bassett who took me through the Waterbury branche of the American Brass Co. I have not seen this gentleman for 20 years, but I have a letter from him that I would like to read to you. 'The American Brass Co. Waterbury, Conn. May 19, 1930. To the-Salt Lake City Conference on Reverberatory Smelting Practice: Through the courtesy of Mr. Scott Turner, Director of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, Mr. G. L. Oldright has been temporarily released from his regular duties to act as your secretary. We have asked him and Mr. McElvenny to make the necessary preliminary arrangements and to present to you at the opening session the greetings of the officers and' directors of the Institute. I am very glad that it has been possible for you to come together under the auspices of the Institute and that the acceptance of our invitation has been so very unanimous. Such an acceptance of the invitation to this meeting indicates your interest in getting together for an exchange of technical data and ideas. We anticipate that this meeting will be of real service to the smelting industry through your open discussion and exchange of ideas, and we sincerely hope that you will form an organization which will arrange for future meetings of a similar nature. While it probably may not be desirable to. distribute the minutes of this conference except to the members who take part in it, we hope that later the Institute publications may be enriched by such matter as you think it desirable to have published; and also, that some of you may be able to offer technical papers for the Institute publications. Chromium recovery from wet-blue offal trimmings and shavings can be done with substantial chemical cost gains by incineration at 600° C for 5 hr. Pretreating the offal with 0.5 M Na2C03 and air-drying prior to incineration produce Cr04 .By simply incinerating the offal, without pretreatment, an ash containing water insoluble Cr203 was produced. The Cr203 in the ash was purified by leaching with water. Chromium and crude protein were efficiently extracted from offal using 5 pct Na103, 5 pct H2S04, and 3 pct NaCl at 40° C. This procedure was effective but expensive. Satisfactory leather as to odor, appearance and shrinkage temperature was made from chromium recovered from wet-blue offal by incineration and by extraction. Chromium conservation is possible by recycling chromium liquors and by precipitating chromium from spent tanning liquors prior to combining these liquors with other tannery wastes. Combining chromium liquors with other wastes introduces contaminants that make chromium recovery and reuse difficult. Leaching sludges with H2SO4 produced marginal chemical cost gains. Leather tanned with these solutions had satisfactory shrinkage temperature but the sludge odors and iron contamination were objectionable.

Two mine-fire experiments were conducted in the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health's (NIOSH) Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) which demonstrated that smoke from diesel-fuel fires of 500 kW and 660 kW heat-release rates in a return airway can develop, without causing a complete air flow reversal, into a roof layer that can migrate upwind forming a counter flow to the primary airflow in a crosscut. Subsequently, smoke can penetrate into an intake airway and create a hazardous atmosphere in the intake airway upwind from the fire. Visibility conditions less than 13 m were created by the smoke in the intake airway downwind from the crosscut. Modeling of the event with a three-dimensional, time-dependent, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) program correctly represented the smoke movement.

Ores are becoming extremely variable with mineralogy and hardness disturbing the grinding and flotation circuits. The current grinding and flotation sensors provide large amounts of data for process optimisation. Adding the right context and operational events augments operational knowledge for proactive actions to improve the performance of the grinding and flotation circuits. A data-driven strategy is needed to enable operations, maintenance, and business personnel to quickly and easily take corrective action when abnormal conditions occur. A digital plant template transforms data into operational insights in real-time. It uncovers the hidden, idle and downtime losses. By measuring and managing these unproductive times, people find new ways of avoiding them, improving the profitability of the plant. The information created by the real time analytics enables the calculation of recovery in real time and develops predictive analytics models to find the best operating condition based on the type of ore currently mined. The creation of new workflows and collaboration between mining and concentrator plant and the enterprise, including services providers, are enabled. A grade recovery model is used to identify the best operating conditions in real-time. An optimal Gaudin size distribution shape is used to find the grinding operating conditions that optimise the metal recovery in the rougher sections of the mineral processing plant. Sensors in the flotation circuits enable estimation of metal recovery and determine the optimal froth depth and aeration profiles, using an industrial air holdup flotation model. The implementation of a recovery/grind strategy with industrial examples in non-ferrous metal concentrator is presented in the paper. The wastes from marble extraction in the Thasos- Kavalla-Drama region of northeastern Greece could be utilised as a new source of high-quality white carbonate fillers for the European market. Large deposits, satisfactory properties, acceptable processing costs and environmental benefits are among the factors that would have a positive bearing on a proposal for their use in this way. DTH, the waste arising from dolomitic marble quarrying operations on the island of Thasos, appears to be the more suitable material than DA waste from Nikissiani on the mainland because of the lower cost of primary grinding and the higher production rate of ultrafines with a mean particle size of 5 micrometres (the optimum size for filler properties in the case of both DTH and DA), its superior whiteness, the benefits that such use would bring to a very severe and complex environmental problem and the lower transport cost

Transportation networks extend every day around the world, requiring safe and well-maintained structures for efficiency and for users’ safety. Due to specific features of the infrastructure, such as longer tunnels, increased traffic and marginal safety rules, fire safety in rail and road tunnels becomes more challenging.The situation becomes more critical due to the global economy and increasing worldwide tourism, with multi-national companies often involved in both design and construction of transportation routes or systems in other countries. Tourism brings the risk of visitors becoming victims in a foreign land; thus, international law becomes more and more applicable to transportation projects all over the world, requiring a consistent approach to safety (UN Economic and Social Council, 2001; US DOT Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) 2006; US Transportation Research Board, Committee on the Role of Public Transportation in Emergency Evacuation, 2008; UK Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology, 1997).There are significant differences between rail and road tunnels, both in their functionality and safety requirements. Most tunnels over a certain length are equipped with emergency ventilation systems capable to control the spread of smoke by creating an air stream in the desired direction. Besides ventilation, fire-life safety (FLS) includes smoke and heat detection by linear or spot detectors, closed-circuit television (CCTV) and public address systems with prerecorded announcements, as well as evacuation signage and monitoring capabilities (Vägverket – Swedish National Road Administration, 2004).There isn’t a consistent, worldwide approach to the design of emergency ventilation systems for tunnels, with significant differences from continent to continent (US DOT Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), 2004, US Federal Transit Administration, Transportation Research Board, 2006). In North America US NFPA 130 and 502 standards for rail and road tunnels, respectively, represent the main criteria, however, they are continually revised and new versions issued every three years. For road tunnels the World Road Association PIARC issues guidelines, but they are not truly enforceable. There are no similar international guidelines for rail tunnels, except general recommendations by the International Association of Public Transport (UITP) (IAPT, 2003).In Europe the Directive #54/EC adopted by European Community Parliament in 2004 requires a minimum level of safety for road tunnels users in all existing and proposed tunnels in the Trans-European road network that are greater than 500 m in length. Authorities having jurisdiction in many other individual countries, such as Australia, Austria, Germany, Japan and others, enforce specific safety regulations (Miclea et al, 2007). While it is impossible to summarise all aspects of this topic in a short paper, a review of the design approach, the existing differences in safety requirements, as well as applicable design solutions to meet safety codes for both rail and road tunnels are discussed below.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is not just a catch-cry. It is an essential component of every-day life in many professions, including accountancy, law and public administration. Without realising it, many other professions are undertaking CPD activities in an un-structured way, including mining, metallurgy and geology. Examples include Annual and technical conferences of The Institute, Branch-level technical meetings and in-company training and development programmes and technical exchanges. Whilst approaches to date have undoubtedly helped keep the Australian mining industry at the forefront of mining technology, one cannot presume that technological development will stand still. To meet this challenge, human resource development must keep pace, not only to optimize utilization of technological developments, but more importantly to develop firm bases from which new products, processes and technologies can be developed within Australia.

The gold at Giant Yellowknife is intimately associated with a complex mixture of sulphides, including pyrite, arsenopyrite, stibnite, and a wide variety of antimony sulpho-salts. Direct cyanidation has never been feasible. Recovery is almost entirely dependent upon flotation, roasting of flotation concentrate, and cyanidation of calcine. In November 1958, an Edwards-type roaster and an early prototype, two stage Fluosolids roaster, were replaced by a large two-stage Fluosolids roaster of improved design. The new roaster was started at "safe" medium temperatures, but early in 1959, temperatures in both stages were gradually and deliberately lowered to determine whether continuous autogenous roasting could be maintained under exacting low temperature conditions necessary for good extraction. Geology and oil-yield data are presented for a 58-square-mile area encompassing the U.S. Department of the Interior oil-shale leasing program tracts in the western Washakie Basin, Sweetwater County, Wyo. Lithology and oil yields of samples from three Bureau of Mines coreholes are evaluated and correlated with Kinney Rim surface sections measured and sampled by the U.S. Geological Survey. Minable sections of oil shale averaging up to 25 gallons of oil per ton crop out on Kinney Rim in the Laney Member of the Green River Formation. Thick oil-shale sections in the Laney Member that average 15 gallons per ton represent 155 million barrels of oil in place per square mile. In the lower part of the Green River Formation the Tipton Shale Member contains a 20-to 40-foot section averaging 15 gallons per ton. Beds of high-volatile C bituminous coal up to 6 feet thick are present in intertongued parts of the lower Green River Formation and upper Wasatch Formation.

THE production and inspection of the materials of war involves thousands of observations. Logical action is generally based on the interpretation of many observations. The success of such action depends upon the accuracy of the observations and the soundness of the interpretation placed upon them. There are countless instances where the observer 'sees but perceives not'; that is, the significance of a group of observations is lost, due either to faulty interpretation or to no interpretation at all being placed on the results. This condition is being partly corrected in the United Kingdom and the United States (1) by the promotion of certain principles by Ordnance officials. The term Quality Control has been adopted to describe a system of studying and controlling industrial products by methods of handling observations. In these pages an attempt is made to outline in a non-technical manner some of the ideas used in the handling of observations. Of course the authenticity of the observations determines the worth of any decisions based on them. No matter how brilliant is the theory built on unreliable sampling, it is usually of little practical value. n some fields it is almost impossible to obtain observations free from bias. Let us suppose that observers of speed in miles per hour were available for judgment: (a) a bystander, (b) a motorcycle policeman, and (c) a motorist accused of speeding. The bystander might be unbiased but probably would be very inaccurate. The motorist is usually biased on the low side. The policeman is the only qualified observer and, if over-zealous, he might be biased on the high side. Conclusions drawn from large numbers of biased observations naturally would be of little value.

We have considered the following characteristics of the crust and upper mantle of the Pacific Belt: seismic wave velocity anomalies, mechanical stress and shear deformation rate fields, heat flow and the pattern of metallogenic provinces of the Belt. It has been noted that there exist certain .regularities in distribution of the above mentioned geophysical characteristics and metallogenic zones within the Belt, displayed by prevalence of the lithophile elements in the Asia-Australian part of the Belt, and of the chalcophile ones within the American part.

The widespread adoption during the past decade of the dense-medium process for cleaning coal increases the need for technologic studies of the process. Such studies provide information that will insure maximum usefulness of this process in its present form and may well lead to substantial improvements in design and opera¬tion. The Bureau of Mines has published the results of cleaning trials on a wide variety of coals in two dense-medium pilot plants5/ and reported the recovery of coal from waste by dense-medium treatment.6./ The present report deals with the viscosity of magnetite dense medium, an important subject about which virtually nothing has been published. Specifically, the report concerns methods for measuring viscosity, the influence of various medium contaminants on viscosity, the effect of viscosity on cleaning results, and the influence of viscosity on consumption of medium. Cleaning trials on four coals of varied density composition in a pilot plant, using mediums of different viscosities, showed a steady reduction in cleaning efficiency with increasing viscosity in every instance. However, the behavior of each coal in a viscous medium was distinctly individual. With one, an increase of only 1 centipoise in viscosity caused a reduction in recovery efficiency of 7.7 percent, whereas the same increase in viscosity with another reduced recovery efficiency only 2.7 percent.

The objective of these projects is to provide an ordered and sequenced series of advance toward the Bureau's overall goal of providing the systems technology required to create a more healthful and safer working environment for the Nation's mining and minerals processing workers.

A practical simple method is proposed to estimate the tensile strength (st) of strong brittle rocks from the strength ratio of R= sc/st = 8 sc/sci, where sc is the uniaxial compressive strength and sci is the crack initiation stress in an uniaxial compression test. 8 is the Griffith strength ratio and the term sc/sci accounts for the difference of crack growth or propagation in tension and compression in uniaxial compression tests. sci can be reliably obtained from volumetric strain measurement or acoustic emission (AE) monitoring. With the strength ratio R determined, the tensile strength can be indirectly obtained from the result of uniaxial compression tests. In addition, a practical estimate of the Hoek-Brown strength parameter mi is presented and it is suggested that mi = 12 sc/sci can be applied to strong, brittle rocks in high confinement zone and mi = 8 sc/sci can be applied to low confinement to tension zones. It is found that the predicted tensile strengths and Hoek-Brown strength parameter mi using this method are in good agreement with test data. The rock strength parameters like st and mi, which require specialty tests such as direct tensile (or Brazilian) and triaxial compression tests for their determination, can be reasonably estimated from uniaxial compression tests.

The combined study of ground water regime and rock deformations has resulted in the theoretical substantiation of the common principles for analysis of the hydrodynamic and geomechanical processes Within the scope of unique scientific direction -hydrogeomechanics (Mironenko and Shestakov, 1974). The hydrogeomechanical models are widely used now for the analysis and forecasting the extremely important processes connected with the safe and efficient mining operations, as well as with the protection of geological medium. Among these processes are: -deformations of the open-pit slopes and spoil dumps; -consolidation of rocks due to the ground-water pressure drop; -water-end-rock material inrush into mine workings caused by deformations of the undermined rock mass; -geodynamical processes due to the changes in ground water regime; -artificial hydrofracturing in rocks; -transformations of clay linings under the tailing ponds and other technical water basins.
