THE industrial development of the United States has been stimulated by the presence of high-grade iron ore in the Lake Superior district. These great deposits have been susceptible to economical extraction and are conveniently located for cheap lake vessel transportation to the great consuming centers. The district furnishes from 80 to 85 per cent of the iron ore annually consumed in the United States, and a full understanding of the available supply of this great commodity is so important that it is well to consider whether or not the industrial supremacy and national independence attained as a result of the abundance of cheap ore are permanent. The enormous deposits of high-grade ore available in the Lake Superior district have been the foundation upon which the vast industrial structure of the steel and allied industries has been built. It is extremely important to the country as a whole, and especially to those States and communities now dependent on Lake Superior ore for their prosperity, that their industries shall retain the particular advantages with which they are now endowed, and that a generous supply of high-grade raw material be available for their consumption at a satisfactory cost. The steel industry is so basic and fundamental that any fluctuation in the cost of its finished products as determined by the supply and cost of the raw materials involved in its manufacture will necessarily affect the business of a wide variety of industries which are dependent on it.

Quality assurance and quality control of drilled shafts has become a concern due to difficulties in accurately locating construction anomalies and determining load bearing capacity of defected drilled shafts. Various non-destructive evaluation techniques have been developed to estimate the integrity of the concrete in drilled shafts. While these techniques have been widely accepted, variables and unknowns can affect the measurement results. Results are typically difficult to interpret, leading to unnecessary construction delays and possible litigation over shaft integrity. In addition, influences of surrounding ground materials, stress states under different load conditions, and crack and residual stress development during concrete curing further complicate determination of shaft performance. This paper focuses on the evaluation of load bearing capacity of defected drilled shafts under various conditions by numerical analysis and modeling.

Increased TBM performance is leading the way for resurgence in tunneling activity in NYC. Tunnels will be excavated in the same geologic formations as previously excavated D&B tunnels whose construction records are providing valuable insight into the prediction of rock mass behavior. This report compares an eight mile stretch of NYC Water Tunnel #2 with the recently excavated eleven mile stretch of the TBM driven Water Tunnel #3. Comparisons of the type and amount of rock support installed as well as water inflows and grout quantities are made. Rock mass characteristics specific to TBM performance are also evaluated.

The implementation of new technology in mining can be likened to a paradoxical situation or dilemma, where, on one hand, major mining projects are not able to solicit investor funding unless it is proven that the business cases were developed using tried and tested mining methods. On the other hand, new and innovative mining technology and mining methods need first to demonstrate and prove themselves under real production conditions over a reasonable period before they can be considered bankable feasibility studies in the mining industry. This dilemma locks new mining technology investments in a continuous cycle of underinvestment. Technological innovations are particularly relevant to the mining industry, which deals with the challenges of depleting access to resources, requiring new solutions to remain sustainable and competitive. In the last decade, the mining industry has come to realise that technological innovations can directly contribute to its sustained competitive advantage (Sanchez, Hartlieb, 2020), helping to reduce costs, lessen environmental impact, increase production, and improve mineral recovery. While understanding barriers and drivers for technology adoption is important for the success of technology implementation efforts and the sustainability of the mining sector (Muduli et al., 2013), this paper suggests strategies to exit the dilemma, proposing a preliminary framework.

Filtered dry stack tailing storage facilities offer many advantages over thickened tailing storage facilities and yet, most of the mining companies still prefer the latter.Some of the advantages of filtered dry stack tailing storage facilities are: increased structural integrity of the tailing storage facility, which is even more critical in areas of high seismicity, close to nearby communities or environmentally sensitive areas; maximised water recovery which is particularly important in arid environments where water is an extremely valuable resource and its supply is regulated; optimised recovery of valuable metals in the process water, avoiding high cyanide concentration going to detoxification (both aspects haven’t been emphasised enough in technical papers on this subject); optimised space to store the tailings in mountainous regions; minimised elevation of embankment height, providing a safe option to store the tailings in places where there is limited area available; simplified license approval to operate where the tailing facility is a big issue; and avoidance of potential problems with nearby communities.Filtered dry stack tailing storage facilities have some disadvantages such as: technology limitations in operations that process high throughputs (eg >50 000 tpd) as they require many filters resulting in high maintenance and operating costs; higher capital cost; low efficiency in the filtration process, particularly in ores with high clay content increasing operating problems and capital cost; the new technology risk with possible debottlenecking issues and a longer time to achieve the design throughput; and the need to treat larger water flow rates when the water balance is negative.This paper analyses: the operating practices of Mexican gold and silver operations using filtered dry stacking storage facilities; implementation issues, advantages and disadvantages; quantifiable reductions in gold and silver losses and actual lower detoxification cost; and current trends to use filtered dry stacking storage facilities in new projects. São avaliados os consumos de energia elétrica, oxigênio, gás natural e materiais carbonosos; os tempos entre vazamentos, com forno ligado e com forno desligado, assim como a produtividade horária. Com os dados obtidos, se analisa a influência dos metálicos (e seu estado térmico ao momento do carregamento), e o design do forno, sobre os consumos específicos mencionados e a produtividade.

Dozer operators are frequently exposed to whole-body vibration (WBV) during the execution of their work. Occupational exposure to WBV in Indian surface coal mines was evaluated by measuring vibration intensity and duration of exposure. A triaxial accelerometer was placed on the operator seat surface for taking the readings. Based on frequency-weighted root mean square acceleration equivalent to 8-hr shift duration, i.e., (A(8)) all dozer operators have exceeded an Exposure Action Value (EAV) of 0.5 m/s2 , and 90% of dozers did not exceed Exposure Limit Value (ELV) of 1.15 m/s2 . Based on Vibration Dose Value (VDV (8)), all dozer operators have exceeded Exposure Limit Value (EAV) of 9.1 m/s1.75, but no dozer operators have exceeded Exposure Limit Value (ELV) of 21 m/s1.75. Further, an epidemiological study was performed for identifying the extent of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) among dozer operators. For the detailed study, 42 dozer operators and 22 controls were selected from 2 surface coal mines. The control group was not exposed to WBV. It was seen from the cross-sectional study that pain in the lower back was predominantly higher (83.33%) in the exposed group when compared with the control group (31.81%). Likewise, pain in the neck (47.61%), shoulder (42.85%), knees (42.85%), and ankle (11.90%) was higher in the exposed group than that of the control group (22.71%, 0%, 45.45%, and 4.54%). A significant observation among the exposed group was that there was degradation in the quality of life. The outcome of the study would assist in monitoring and mitigation of machinery-induced vibration diseases (MIVD) in India and generally applicable to most of the mechanized mines as well. However, comprehensive studies are still needed to enunciate the magnitude extent.

Shoshonite suite (absarokite-shoshonite-banakite) and adakite-hosted epithermal Au deposits are a feature of circum-Pacific magmatism. Fijian examples include Tavua (Emperor) and Tuvatu on Viti Levu. New discoveries of shoshonite suite and adakite-hosted epithermal Au mineralisation have been made in the southern Yasawa Islands and in central-northern and central-western Viti Levu. The Fijian shoshonites define four NE–SW trending suites. The oldest is the northern 7.9–5.0 Ma Yasawa suite, followed by the 4.7–3.5 Ma Sabeto–Tavua–Rakiraki suite in northern Viti Levu, the 4.7–4.2 Ma Yanuca–Vatulele suite approximately 20 km south of Viti Levu and the 3.4 Ma Astrolabe suite approximately 75 km further south. Shoshonite suite lithologies with 3.8–3.0 Ma ages also occur in the Lomaiviti islands between Vatu-Cake and Moala, to the east of Viti Levu, defining a trend oblique to the NE–SW shoshonite belts. Seatura, a 3.3–2.8 Ma ocean island basalt (OIB) volcano, sits at the northern end of the Lomaiviti trend shoshonites. Trace element/isotopic chemistries indicate that shoshonite arc magma genesis involved the melting of a hydrated supra-subduction zone mantle wedge and also a lower mantle-derived plume (OIB) component. The upwelling plume provided heat for melting and possibly Au enrichment. Accessing the melt generation zone associated with the plume required a slab conduit or window. Such slab windows form by tearing during subduction or occur at slab edges. Adakites form by plume-induced slab melting. The four NE–SW Fijian shoshonite suites are interpreted to occur in back-arc extensional zones above a slab window (tear) that migrated southward during rollback of the New Hebrides–Vanuatu subduction zone. The plume (Seatura OIB) that is interpreted to have caused mantle wedge melting and formation of the Lomaviti trend shoshonites was focused along the interface between the north-dipping Vanuatu–New Hebrides subduction zone and the west-dipping Tonga subduction zone, which we have seismically imaged at approximately 400 km depth. THERE are, broadly speaking, three classes of refractories: acid, basic, and neutral. Fireclay, diaspore, silica, and the sillimanite group of minerals are included in the acid class, which for the most part are not very resistant to basic slags. The neutra! class includes chrome, graphite, and silicon carbide, while most important in the basic class are magnesite and dolomite. Although chrome is a neutral refractory, it has no sharp distinction from magnesitic refractoriness. The two are mineralogically (1) and chemically related, and there is available on the market a complete range of brick from straight chrome to straight magnesite. In many indus trial applications, one. type may be replaced by another. The present paper is confined entirely to such refractories. The Missouri-Kansas-Oklahoma lead and zinc district, better known as the Joplin district, includes the mines in southwest Missouri and in those parts of Kansas and Oklahoma that are directly adjacent. (See PI. I.) This report of investigations carried on by the Bureau of Mines gives the methods used in mining and milling and indicates in some detail the conditions that affect the efficiency of those methods; it does not attempt to discuss the geology of the district, except incidentally, as this has been described in numerous reports by several geologists. Some of the more important recent publications are those of the United States Geological Survey by Smith and Siebenthal, a Bain, b and also those of the Missouri State geological survey by Buckley and Buehler." Other reports are those by Schmidt and Leonard," and Winslow,e of the Missouri geological survey, by Haworth and Crane,! of the Kansas geological survey, and by Jenney.g Although the lead and zinc ores are closely associated, the proportion of zinc ore mined at present is far greater than in former years. For this reason and because the losses in milling zinc ores are proportionately greater than in milling those of lead, the zinc ores are here given most consideration. Only the mines and mills actually examined and tested are discussed in detail, statements of results being restricted to the mines in general, with no special reference to anyone mine. Several mill tests were made to determine in a general way the efficiency of the milling practice in this district and to discover at what stage of the process the losses were greatest. Making these mill tests proved difficult,for, because of the arrangement of the mills and the necessity of estimating the tonnage treated, systematic mill testing and sampling can be done at only a few plants. Many tables giving results of mill tests and screen tests have been omitted because they would serve only to emphasize the important points shown by other data given. The writer has tried to bring out the possibilities of making certain improvements that would effect a greater saving, and has endeavored to avoid the use of technical terms and phrases in order that all statements may be clear and easily understood.

The application of microwave energy as a substitute for conventional heating has drawn interest from many researchers in extractive metallurgy. Microwaves have a heating effect just as many other forms of radiant energy. Microwaves are able to penetrate the substance at which they are directed and in being absorbed heat the material from the inside. As a result of heat generated in the interior of a particle, microwaves can affect the rupture of a particle (in this case a host ore) and break down the matrix of the particle (host ore) and expose the recoverable mineral to the leaching reagent. Two series of leaching experiments were carried out at temperatures above 90????C using a conventional heater (hot plate) and a modified 850 W, 2.45 Ghz microwave oven. One series of tests was carried out at ambient temperature. A pyritic/arsenopyritic gold concentrate was leached with 3.3 kg/t to 6.8 kg/t NaCN for two hours. The extraction of gold at 6.8 kg/t NaCN was higher in microwave assisted leaching (59 per cent) than the extraction obtained in leaching at conventional heating (39 per cent) and ambient temperature (28 per cent). Extraction of gold was dependent on the size fraction used and was 48 per cent for û75 ¦m, 43 per cent for û90+75 ¦m and 37 per cent for û150 + 90 ¦m size ranges.

The Magmont Mine, a 50/50 venture between Cominco American Incorporated (the Operator) and Dresser Industries, Inc., (Halliburton), is a metallic mining and milling facility in the new lead belt of Missouri. The mine is located approximately 100 miles southwest of St. Louis. Legislation passed in 1992 by the Missouri legislature requires all metallic mining and processing facilities to apply for a Metallic Minerals Waste Management permit (MMWM) for their waste facilities. Regulations were subsequently promulgated by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Cominco obtained a MMWM permit (MM-006) from the Missouri DNR in 1992.

"AbstractThis paper reviews the progress made in the manufacture of hydraulic cement from iron blast-furnace slag by simply grinding the granulated material with other constituents. The influence of the chemical and mineralogical composition of the slag, the conditions of granulation, the manner of drying, and the fineness of grinding, on the hydraulic properties of the cement, is discussed. The effect of additions of lime, portland cement, and anhydrite, alone and in combination, on the physical and cementing qualities of the mortar and concrete made from Sydney blast furnace slag, is shown in tables of data and is reviewed in some de- tail. The work at the Nova Scotia Technical College has shown that a cement equivalent in every respect to portland cement can be made from basic blast furnace slag- by the us2 of certain quantities of portland cement as an activator.IntroductionBlast furnace slag is a potentially valuable material for the manufacture of hydraulic cement. It is a by-product of the manufacture of iron in the blast furnace, and is formed by the combination of the silica and alumina .of the iron ore with the limestone flux. The metallurgist terms a slag .acid or •basic according as the percentage of lime is less or greater than the percentage of silica plus alumina. The basic slags have the •more pronounced hydraulic properties."

During the pyrometallurgical processes, a substantial quantity of high-temperature ironmaking and steelmaking slags, generated at temperatures ranging from 1400 to 1600°C, is wasted, as the heat contained in these slags is released into the environment during the tapping process without effective utilisation. On the other hand, a significant amount of energy is required to reheat the cold materials for the manufacturing of glass and mineral-wool, often necessitating the addition of high-silica materials to facilitate the production process. In this study, an innovative approach is presented to harness the heat present in molten metallurgical slags to directly produce new raw materials for glass and mineral-wool manufacturing while simultaneously reducing energy consumption and mitigating CO2 emissions. The theoretical amount of waste glass that can be effectively added in the process has been estimated via thermodynamic calculation. Experimental assessments were conducted to examine the impact of high-silica waste materials on the dissolution, melting and fluidity. Potential recipes for glass and mineral-wool manufacturing were suggested and an assessment of the energy savings, and reduction in CO2 emissions with manufacturing of glass and mineral-wool using this innovative approach were included. It was determined that the processes could lead to a reduction of over 26 kg of CO2 emissions per 100 kg of new material used, primarily due to the utilisation of heat from slag and the accelerated smelting process.

This report gives the result of investigations of coals of different rank, coal com¬ponents, chemically and thermally treated and irradiated coals, and sedimented organic matter. In most studies the arbitrary parameters obtained from the usual quantitative profile analyses are not given largely because they lack physical meaning. Instead comp interpretations are offered. X-ray patterns of high-volatile bituminous and lower rank coals are not self¬-sufficient for structural interpretation by the methods of analysis developed to date. The patterns of hydrogenated and dehydrogenated coals indicate that the basic change in the structure of bituminous coals with increase in rank is the conversion of alicyclic structures into aromatic layers. In low-rank anthracites the aromatic layers are about 10 A in size. The increase in rank is the result of coalescence of layers. High-rank anthracites have layer sizes of 25 to 40 A and exhibit the development of three-dimensional (hkl) reflections of graphite, indicating ordering of adjacent layers. In meta-anthracites the layers are > 1000 A and the basic structure is that of defective crystalline graphite. The well-known petrographic components in low-rank coals have different structures; the differences dissappear in low-volatile bituminous and higher rank coals. The patterns of sedimented organic matter, except impsonites, differ from those of coal hydrogen contents are high, and their X-ray patterns are consistent with those of structures. In contrast to normal coals, the patterns of uranium-bearing coals show increased diffuseness with decrease in hydrogen content. The diffuseness is accompanied by increase in the uranium content of the coal. It is very likely that high uranium-bearing coals have predominantly tetrahedral structures.

These types of ground conditions tear up coring bits rapidly, making it extremely difficult for even the most seasoned drilling teams to maintain effective productivity. The drilling challenges faced in this rich and opportune region are being met today by advanced coring technology, bringing with it the potential for increased productivity in Latin American mineral exploration.

Mengzi Mining and Metallurgy Co, Ltd (MMMC) polymetallic ore contains recoverable amounts of tin, lead, zinc, pyrite and other valuable minerals. With the change in orebody, the run-of-mine (ROM) ore changed from lead zinc rich ore to tin rich ore, where the current ROM ore contains 0.45–1.25 per cent tin, 20–25 per cent sulfur, and 0.20–0.35 per cent copper. The previous processing flow sheet was designed to recover lead zinc rich ore and it is clearly not suitable for recovery of the current tin rich ore, where the tin was already overground and tin recovery was only 50.19 per cent. The Mengzi Mining Company has recently modified the concentrator circuit by incorporating rod mill and high efficient Derrick fine screen. As a result of the improved classification efficiency, the overgrinding of the tin ore was minimised and the recovery of tin was improved by 20.71 per cent, ie from 50.19–70.90 per cent. ABSTRACT Sooner or later, every producing mine faces the question of fill. This paper invites consideration of mill tailings as an economical, efficient, and quantitatively adequate source of such fill. Some of the advantages, disadvantages, methods of utilization, and methods of treating mill tailings for sand recovery are covered. ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF SAND FILL DISREGARDING economic com-promise, that material which supports the greatest applied load with the least compression is the best choice for fill. Table I, reproduced from U. S. Bureau of Mines Bulletin 60, is offered as evidence of the adequacy of hydraulically placed sand. Table II gives the results of tests made in an effort to determine the reason for the difference between load hearing qualities of dry-placed and hydraulically-placed sand. From these, it would appear that hydraulic placing gives a denser initial packing, with corresponding higher, and faster development of, load bearing qualities. Assuming this to be true, then if sand from mill tailings can be placed underground economically, it is the superior fill material. Table III summarizes cost data available. The most cursory glance through the available references (2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9) will show .that the major benefit from the adoption of sand fill is a decrease in the non-productive fill ?cycle of a working place. This, it is estimated, increases the output of an individual stope by from 25 to 50 per cent. The advantage of reducing the number of required working places for a constant daily production is obvious.

The REP experiment is part of the research programme conducted by Andra to investigate the possibility of reversible radwaste disposal in a Jurassic (Callovo-Oxfordian) argillite formation at the Meuse/Haute-Marne underground laboratory site in northeastern France. The experiment focuses on the hydromechanical response of the formation to sinking the laboratory access shaft. Modelling of boreholes and shaft sinking operations has helped to optimise measurement point locations based on initial stress tensor anisotropy, while minimising interaction between instrument boreholes. Analyses were made of model sensitivity to intrinsic rock characteristics, hydromechanical coupling properties and sensor installation procedures. L’expérimentation REP fait partie du programme de recherche pluridisciplinaire engagé par l’Andra pour étudier la possibilité d’un stockage réversible des déchets radioactifs dans la formation Callovo-Oxfordienne des argilites du site de Meuse/Haute-Marne (Commune de Bure - France). Cette expérimentation permettra d’étudier la REponse hydromécanique de la formation aux sollicitations engendrées par le fonçage du Puits d’accès du laboratoire souterrain de recherche. Afin d’optimiser le positionnement des points de mesures, compte tenu de l’anisotropie du tenseur des contraintes initiales, et de minimiser les interactions entre les forages d’instrumentation, des modélisations des forages et du creusement du puits ont été conduites. Des analyses de sensibilité aux caractéristiques intrinsèques de la roche, aux propriétés de couplage HM et aux protocoles d’installation des capteurs ont été faites. Die REP-Untersuchung ist Teil des multidisziplinären Forschungsprogramms, das die ANDRA im Callovo-Oxfordian-Tonstein in situ am Standort Meuse/Haute Marne (Gemeinde Bure – Frankreich) im Hinblick auf eine Eignung zur reversiblen Lagerung radioaktiver Abfälle durchführt. Dabei soll das hydro-mechanische Verhalten der Formation auf die Beanspruchungen, die durch das Abteufen des Zugangsschachts zum Untertage-Forschungslabor erzeugt werden, untersucht werden. Zur optimalen Positionierung der Messpunkte unter Berücksichtigung der Anisotropie des Tensors der Ausgangsspannungen und zur Minimierung der gegenseitigen Beeinflussung der Instrumentierbohrungen wurden ein Schachtabteuf- und Bohrmodelle entwickelt. Zur Untersuchung der inhärenten Eigenschaften des Gesteins, des gekoppelten HM-Verhaltens und der Installationsprotokolle der Messsonden wurden Sensibilitätsanalysen durchgeführt.
