This report is one of a series written by members of the Solid Fuels Mission to Germany describing wartime developments in the mining, prepara- tion, and utilization of coal. This mission was organized early in 1945 under the auspices of the Technical Industrial Intelligence Committee, which cooperated with a counterpart British Committee. In some instances; engi- neers from other allied countries cooperated. The Solid Fuels Mission operated under the direction of a steering committee headed by Dr. C. J. Potter, Deputy Solid Fuels Administrator. The personnel of the mission consisted of H. F. Yancey, in charge, J. W. Buch, Thomas Fraser, L. L. Newman, and L. D. Schmidt of the Bureau of Minos; H. H. Lowry, Director of the Coal Research Laboratory, Carnegie Institute of Technology; H. J. Rose, Vice-President and Director of Research, Bituminous Coal Research, Inc.; and F. H. Reed, Chief Chemist, Illinois Geological Survey. E. 0. Rhodes, Manager, Development Section, Tar Products Division, Koppers Co., Inc., served on the mission for the Chemical Subcommittee of 1.I.I.C. in Europe. His assignment was the investigation of the coal-tar industry. In this connection he prepared this report on the German Low- Temperature Tar Industry as a companion to his provious report on the German High-Temperature Tar Industry (Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7409). Because of Mr. Rhodes' extensive experience in these fields and the impor- tance of the subject material to the coal producers and those utilizing coal-tar products, both reports are issued by the Bureau of Mines. Over fifty reports were written by the members of the Solid Fuels Mis- elon. Gas and water permeabilities of a large number of samples from the Pittsburgh and Pocahontas coals were measured at various overburden and mean flow pressures. A wide variation in the air and water permeabilities was obtained for each type of coal. Overburden pressure has the most significant effect on the single-phase permeability. Considerable hysteretic effect was observed for both air and water permeabilities. Gas permeabilities are affected to a lesser degree by mean flow pressures above atmospheric. However, at subatmospheric mean pressures, appreciable increase in permeability occurs for low permeability samples. Air and water relative permeabilities were also measured for numerous samples of Pittsburgh and Pocahontas coals. Tests were performed under steady-state conditions for both drainage and imbibition cycles. Results indicate that the flow of gas is greatly reduced during the latter process, whereas it is largely undiminished over a wide water-saturation range during drainage. It is also shown that imbibition saturation distributions obtained from liquid-water imbibition as opposed to water-vapor adsorption produce gas permeability curves of radically different character. The effective permeabilities to both gas and water were significantly reduced with the application of overburden pressures in the range of 0 to 1,000 psig, but the general shapes of the relative permeability curves remained the same.

The caisson foundation for Vent Building No. 6, at the southern landfall of Boston's Third Harbor Tunnel, was installed inside an unbraced concrete cofferdam 250 feet in diameter and about 70 feet deep. As a spectacular engineering feat, the cofferdam itself certainly ranks first. However, the foundation work within was no routine caisson job and made its own contribution to the state of the art. Comprised of 5 ft. diameter caissons socketed 10 to 16 feet in sound rock, it posed serious challenges in logistics, space limitations and time, requiring development of unique, purpose-made equipment. The unexpected discovery of significant depths of shattered rock overlying acceptable sound rock, along with other surprises of lesser import, compounded the problems. How these challenges were planned for, met and overcome is the subject of this paper.

AS a portion of a general study of liquid-metal thermodynamics, high-temperature galvanic cells were used to study the effect of added dilute solutes on the activity of zinc in dilute solution with molten bismuth in the range 450° to 650°C. 1,2 The cells were of the type The experimental procedures have been described previously.1 In the course of studies conducted in the bismuth-rich corner of the systems Bi-Zn-Au and Bi-Zn-Cu, marked discontinuities were observed in the electromotive force-temperature relations for a number of the experimental compositions. Above the discontinuity temperatures, the relations, which were linear, exhibited slopes similar to the binary alloy of the same mole fraction zinc, as shown in Figs. I and 2. Below the discontinuity temperatures, the slopes were markedly different, but the relations remained linear. In general, as the amount of the third eletnent was increased, the slope of the lower portion of the relations tended to become less positive. The slopes of electromotive force-temperature relations reflect the entropy of mixing of zinc and, therefore, the occurrence of a discontinuity marks the transition between two different equilibrium situations involving the solution of zinc. A number of other investigators3-5 have used such observations to determine liquidus boundaries in binary alloys. Since the upper portions of the ternary electromotive force-temperature relations of this study had the same slopes as the binary alloys, the discontinuities are interpreted as marking the transition between the single-phase liquid region and the underlying two- and three-phase regions. Reference to the Zn-Bi equilibrium diagram6 confirms that the binary alloys were single-phase liquids at the experimental temperatures. Fig. I shows the electromotive force-temperature relations for the alloys containing Bi-Zn-Au and Fig. 2 shows similar relations for the Bi-Zn-Cu alloys. In the lower portion of each figure, the temperature of the discontinuity is plotted vs the mole fraction of the added solute at the various levels of zinc concentra- tion. Cross-plots from these curves at constant temperature permitted the construction of the partial liquidus surface isotherms shown in Figs. 3 and 4.

THE subject of the constitution of copper-iron mattes has received considerable attention in recent years by Keller,1 Bolles,2 Hofman,3 and Gibb and Philp.4 Still more recently Friedrich, Röntgen, Wiedmann, Heyn and Bauer, and Leroux have published, in some instances, elaborate researches on the various systems of the sulphides, and the sulphides and their respective metals, which enter into the constitution of mattes, and have added very greatly to the knowledge of the subject. The work of Friedrich has been especially fruitful. But to date no effort has been made to correlate the data obtained in the latter researches and apply then to the study of the product called " matte," which is made in such large quantities by copper and lead-smelters. In this paper we propose to determine, by metallographic and chemical means, the constitution of copper-iron and copper-lead mattes in the light of the recent data above mentioned. We do not discuss copper-nickel mattes or speisses (artificial arsenides). The paper is divided into three sections I. A review and discussion of the various binary systems of the metallic, sulphides, and the binary systems of various metals and their respective sulphides entering into the constitution of mattes; also a discussion of the physical and chemical properties of these sulphides. II. A description of the results obtained from the chemical and metallographic examinations of the samples of copper-iron and copper-lead-iron matte obtained from various plants.

RIGHT OF LIFE TENAN1' TO OPEN MINES. The common-law rule that a life tenant was not permitted to open or share in mines does not prevail in Michigan; but a life tenant by dower right is permitted to share in the royalties, as the strict common- law rule is not in harmony with the spirit of our institutions and the policy of our law and would often result in defeating the purposes of dower statutes. Poole v. Union Trust Co. (Michigan), 157 Northwestern 430, p. 432, March, 1916. SALE AND CONVEYANCE. PURCHASE OF ENTIRE ESTATE--FRAUD. A purchase of land where no exceptions or reservations of minerals were made and the land was bought as property, when nothing is excepted and no qualifications or reservations are embodied in the agreement, was presumptively and by common understanding a purchase of the property in its entirety; and the insertion in the deed of a reservation of mineral rights in violation of the contract of purchase and without the grantee's knowledge or consent was fraudulent. RESERVATION OF MINERALS--EXTENT AND EFFECL A reservation in a conveyance of land excepting and reserving to the grantor all coals and mines beneath the surface with the sole right and privilege to remove the same, is not as broad as the grant itself. A contract for the purchase of a mine recited that a deed had been executed by the owner and placed in escrow to so remain until the sum of $30,000 should be paid. The contract provided that $1,200 of the purchase price was to be paid in cash, $800 in 60 days, and the remainder out of 20 per cent of the gross output of the mine, such per cent to be paid in five years unless the vein and value of ore should not continue in depth, in which event the purchaser was to have two years longer to complete the payment of the purchase price. The contract contained other covenants to the effect that the purchasing corporation would fit up a certain specified mill and would continue development work at such rate as to keep the mill in operation if ores sufficiently valuable should be found and in the absence of unavoidable accident. The contract also provided 1/ that abandonment of work for a period of six months at anyone time, except as above, on said property," should operate as a forfeiture of the purchaser's right. In an action by the vendor to quiet the title to the land and to have the contract declared void, the court found that the purchaser failed to perform the work on the property and failed to place thereon the improvements as required by the contract and permitted debts to accumulate against the property, taxes to be levied thereon, and that for more than a year the purchaser had not done any work or labor of any sort upon the mine or premises, and that the contract contemplated development work from the time the purchaser took possession of the property, or at least promptly thereafter, and the fact that no machinery was in place for a year or more after the execution of the contract was a breach of the covenant of continued development, and that the clause in the contract" except as above" does not contemplate a delay in the development resulting from a failure to install machinery, but it means that unless prevented by unavoidable accidents the purchaser shouLdhave no valid excuses for neglecting the work for a period of six months or more.

The Embankment Place office development over the platforms of Charing Cross Railway Station in London has presented many interesting and unusual problems to the engineers involved with the project. The main structure is supported on widely-spaced columns which penetrate the station platforms and underlying vaults, calling for high capacity foundations built in severely restricted spaces. Hand-dug underreamed piles were chosen. Whilst a conventional design approach was taken to size the piles, a detailed appraisal of ground movements was made to explore the effects of the new building loads on the existing foundations, not only beyond the site perimeter but also those amongst the new foundations. Before construction of the pile proper could take place, it was necessary to sink a caisson through the upper unstable and water-bearing soils. This being identified as a high-risk item, a full-scale trial was carried out prior to embarking on the main works. The twenty-one hand-dug piles were 2.5m diameter, over 30m deep and belled out to between 4.5m and 6.6m.

Petrographic studies, assay records, and laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer (LA-ICP-MS) analyses of major sulfides suggest nearly all of the gold at the Ernest Henry Cu-Au deposit occurs in the form of native gold or electrum (95-65 wt.% Au); sylvanite and dissolved gold in cobaltite, chalcopyrite, and pyrite make only minor contributions. LA-ICP-MS analyses of the gold contents of chalcopyrite gave from 8 to 139 ppb (mean = 56 ppb), more than an order of magnitude lower than those experimentally determined in chalcopyrite in equilibrium with native gold at the estimated mineralization temperatures (350°-450°C). Gold content is more variable in pyrite (1-400 ppb, mean = 77 ppb) and highest in narrow growth zones of a subordinate type of complexly zoned pyrite wherein it is associated with elevated As, Ag, Sn, Sb, Te, and Bi. Deposition of gold-electrum was closely associated with, but preceded some of the chalcopyrite deposition, as indicated by microtextures and lower bulk Au:Cu ratios in late-stage chalcopyrite-rich veins. Gold grains have maximum dimensions from <1 to 50 micrometers, and are heterogeneously distributed with most occurring in microscale clusters. Fifty-five out of 76 grains recorded in polished sections are in contact with both chalcopyrite and pyrite, and many of the rest are in sites where such a relationship could exist in the third dimension. The dominant textural sites are intergrowths with chalcopyrite in microveinlets cutting pyrite, and on faces of pyrite grains in contact with chalcopyrite. Scanning electron microscopy, electron microprobe analysis, and proton induced X-ray emission studies show that pyrite associated with gold includes complexly zoned, weakly zoned, arsenian, and arsenic-poor types. The textures are compatible with the possibility that most gold was deposited electrochemically as native metal on pyrite surfaces. The textural distribution of gold has important metallurgical implications given that the ore processing circuits at Ernest Henry and most other sulfide copper mines are designed to exclude pyrite (and arsenic) from concentrates.

THE Polaris-Taku mine is a new gold property, situated in the far north-west corner of British Columbia. Production was started in November, 1937, at the rate of 150 tons a day, and recently has been increased to 200 tons. The property, which promises to become one of British Columbia&apos;s important gold mines, was developed and brought into production in twenty-nine months after work was started on it as a virtual prospect in June, 1935, by Edward C. Congdon and associates. Inaccessibility, extraordinarily complicated geological problems, and difficult metallurgy retarded development of the property before acquisition by the present interests, an::l, in fact, discouraged two companies that had spent substantial sums upon it from continuing development. This paper is concerned with reviewing the development of the property and describing the principal features of the geology, the mining and metallurgical practices, and the equipment employed. The Federal Bureau of Mines conducted static tests at 2,500° F on 39 refractory compositions, and dynamic tests at [2,825°35° F] on 31 commercial refractory brick specimens to determine their resistance to corrosion and erosion by a slag similar in composition to that used in producing insulating mineral wool. The static tests showed fireclay, low-alumina compositions (<70 percent A1203), zircon, zirconia, SiC, and clay-bonded graphite refractories to be unsuitable. Dynamic test results indicated that magnesia and chromia compositions were superior to high-alumina compositions (=70 percent A1203) as a furnace lining for melting mineral wool. Data from these tests indicated that magnesia and chromia compositions with low RO/R203 mole ratios were more resis tant to attack by mineral wool slags than ones with high RO/R203 mole ratios.

The kinetics of leaching galena with ferric chloride and ferric nitrate have been examined as a function of ferric concentration, salt concentration, temperature and particle size. Diffusivity of ferric complex ions was also established as a function of ferric chloride concentration and temperature. In the presence of 3 M NaCl, leaching rate is controlled by product layer diffusion when ferric chloride is added as oxidant. With NaCl concentrations less than 3 mole/liter rate decreases with decreased NaCl concentration, and, thus, rate is apparently not controlled by product layer diffusion. It is suggested that rate is controlled by lead chloride solubility at the reaction interface under these conditions. When ferric nitrate is added as oxidant, leaching rate is limited by chemical reaction control. An electrochemical model is presented. Activation energies are 8.1 and 11.3 kcal/mol in the ferric chloride and ferric nitrate systems, respectively.

"A surge in mine related deaths in Middle Eastern conflicts over the past few years has prompted research into the mitigation of the impact on a blast loaded vehicle. In past military conflicts, it has been observed that blast loading can cause injury to the brain but the exact cause is unknown [1]. The recent rise in deaths due to Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) has led to research that has speculated that the high acceleration experienced by soldiers on a blast loaded vehicle leads to Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) [2]. This research aims to investigate vehicle designs that can reducethe peak acceleration for passengers on board the vehicle, in the event that the vehicle is blast loaded by an IED."

Recent studies on the physico-chemical properties of molten slags and oxide solid solutions of interest is reviewed. The review covers redox and phase equilibria in slags, viscosity, diffusivity, electrical conductivity, kinetics of interfacial reactions between slags and CO-CO2, interfacial properties and phenomena. Some highlights from ongoing work on modelling phase diagrams, component activity, viscosity and electrical conductivity of multi-component slags will be presented and results compared with published experimental data on slags with or without suspended solid phases.

"The Lake St. Joseph Iron Deposit is in Northwestern Ontario. Exploration to date by Steep Rock Iron Mines Limited has indicated an ore reserve of 683 million long tons. Metallurgical investigations have proved that suitable oxide pellets and/or superconcentrates can be economically produced from this ore. Studies of the Lake St. Joseph iron ore deposits have covered the period 1956-71, and have embodied applications of the improvement in mining and processing technology over this period. Market demand in the early 1960's for high-grade oxide pellets as a replacement for natural iron ores for the blast furnace first drew attention to the potential of the Lake St. Joseph deposit. The current market trend toward utilization of sponge iron to replace steel scrap as feed to electric furnaces and cupolas now suggests that the deposit can better be exploited as a prime source of superconcentrates."

The bulk of high carbon ferromanganese produced in India continue to have more than 0.35% phosphorus since they are produced by carbothermic reduction process. The low phosphorus manganese ores are depleting fast and ferromanganese manufacturers will have no option but to use medium and low grade ores having high phosphorus content resulting in high phosphorus in the product. A systematic study was taken up at NML to solve this problem. Initially, a thermodynamic analysis was carried out for which Ba-P-O ternary predominance diagrams were constructed at several temperatures to predict the most suitable conditions for selective removal of phosphorus from high carbon ferromanganese. These conditions required a usage of a flux having a high level of basicity, moderate oxygen potential as well as low melting temperature. The experimental results showed that it was possible to remove phosphorus from high carbon liquid ferromanganese from 0.56%to 0.18% using BaCO3 based fluxes at the rate of 16-wt% of the ferromanganese charged. However, the Mn loss varied in the range of 2-5%. The objective of the subsequent study carried out at the laboratory scale was to optimize the flux consumption as well as minimize the Mn loss with effective dephosphorization by using BaO based calcined pellets instead of BaCO3 based powders. It was felt that the handling of pellets under plant conditions would be easier and also eliminate the loss of flux as a dust, which occurs when powder is added. These pellets were forced towards the bottom of the melt for better efficiency. For this purpose, a plunging system was designed and fabricated in-house that helped in reducing the flux consumption to less than 5% and also improved the kinetics of the process. The desired results were achieved within 10 minutes of the addition of the flux. The know-how is ready for transfer to interested parties and authors are willing to conduct large scale trials with them.

Early this year at the University of Arizona in Tucson, a survey was made of student opinion about the minerals industry. Over 100 of the three page questionnaires were completed and these were analyzed by the following categories: 40 Mining Engineering students, 20 Geological Engineering with 2 Geophysical Engineering students, 15 Geology students, 7 Metallurgical Engineering, 26 Underclassmen, 29 Graduate students and a composite of 84 total students. Not all of the results of the survey were predictable. After graduation there is a strong preference toward going to work in the mineral industries. The next most popular options, but trailing the first choice greatly, was graduate work or employment in another industry. A smattering of other choices were for teaching, government or research. None checked the box for drop out.

Two sessions during the recent AMC Mining Convention in Los Angeles, September 23-26, served to update industry personnel on the status of health and safety regulations in the US. As reflected by the American Mining Congress resolution on mine safety and health, "Based on experience with the federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 and the federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977, (AMC) does not believe that laws designed to force compliance with regulations through the imposition of criminal or civil penalties will result in safer mines. (AMC) feels that the government&apos;s participation will be much more productive if greater emphasis is placed on research, training, and inspections aimed primarily at assisting operators and employees in recognizing and eliminating hazardous conditions and practices.

This paper presents the variability of responses of paste backfill specimens that have been prepared with varying binding agent and binder combinations, when subjected to uniaxial compressive strength testing. A testing program conducted for an underground operating mine to produce cost efficient paste fill recipes using four different binding agents, in various ratios and combinations, is presented to illustrate the responses. These binding agents are Normal Portland Cement Type-10 (NPC T-10), oxidation or sulphide attack resistant binder (Binder A), replacement binder B (Binder B), and replacement binder C (Binder C). The paste fill recipes were prepared at 2, 3.5 and 5% binder content at varying binder combinations, at fixed size and tested in a Material Testing System (MTS) under constant strain rate conditions following cure times of 7, 14, 28, 56, 90, 112, 180 and 240 days. The results of tests suggested that the strength data clearly shows a trend of increasing strength with increasing binder content but not necessarily cure time. It is noted that all the blends achieved dramatic increases in strength up to 28 days of cure and then either increased or decreased moderately beyond 28 days curing, depending on the binder content and binder combination. The moderate decrease is apparent for the 2% paste fill blends and in some binder combinations of the 3.5 and 5% blends, which indicated lackluster performance beyond 28 days curing. This lackluster strength performance indicated that the binder content and combination may not be sufficient for the paste fill to achieve complete hydration and acquire adequate strength performance beyond 28 days. This study indicated that economic paste fill recipes can be designed with confidence using affordable alternative binders. However, it is noted that these alternate binders cannot be used as stand alone binders but should be used in combination with NPC to facilitate hydration of the paste fill.

EXPLORATION for deep-seated orebodies in the Silver Belt area of the Coeur d&apos;Alene mining district is complicated by meager surface expressions of diagnostic criteria, lack of knowledge of the significance of specific alteration phenomena, and the great expense involved in the exploration for ore shoots, the tops of which often occur near sea level elevation or below and as much as 4000 ft or more below the surface. Except for the early studies of Ransome and Calkins in 1903 and 1904,[1] little geological work was done in the Coeur d&apos;Alene district for many years, and it is only during the last 15 to 20 years that complete and careful geological mapping has been applied to most of the mines in the area. Much early information, which now would prove invaluable, is lost in hundreds of miles of caved and inaccessible mine openings not mapped by mining geologists. In more recent years mining geology has become a tool of greater use in the district, and some measurable progress is being made in the accumulation of observations that are adding gradually to the knowledge of ore deposits in the district.

Whilst the wider community is both a large consumer of mineral products and relies on mineral exports for much of the wealth which sustains it, the community generally has a poor perception of the minerals industry. &nbsp; The role of professionals and The AusIMM in the "New Economy" minerals industry is reviewed. The new structure of The Institute is vital as we move forward in times of globalisation, rationalism, increasing litigation, criminalisation of risk and increased focus on corporate governance. This address looks forward to ways The AusIMM and professionals of the future are positioning themselves for these and other challenges.
