The disposal of the phosphate slimes produced by Florida beneficiation operations is perhaps the biggest single problem of the phosphate mining industry. This is an old problem which has not been solved and which is becoming increasingly severe. In a typical phosphate mining operation, the phosphate rock mined is initmately mixed with sand and clay, constituting what is known as matrix. During the beneficiation, the clay and other fine materials are separated usually at -150 mesh, and washed from the phosphate rock in a form of diluted slurry known as phosphate slimes. The quantity of slimes solids and their composition vary considerably with the location but usually represent from 25 to 35% of the ore mined. Because of the affinity that clays have for water, large volumes of water are required to separate the granular material in the matrix forming a dilute slime suspension (1.5 to 3% solids) of colloidal material, which settles very slowly, and thus requires immense impounding areas, which never becomes totally usable land. This paper, covering Chaffee, Fremont, Gunnison, Lake, Larimer, Park, and Summit Counties, Colo., is the second of a series reporting on the tungsten potential of the Colorado region. The assembled information was obtained by examination of some properties, personal contacts with owners, and access to unpublished reports by other engineers. The tungsten-bearing areas of the 7 counties cover approximately 400 square miles and are in 10 distinct areas, which vary in size (fig. 1) from 1 square mile up to 290 square miles. The tungsten mineral wolframite was discovered by a man named Hackay near Dale on the Florence & Cripple Creek Railroad in the early 1900's, and wolframite and hubnerite were noted at Climax and the adjacent areas in Lake and Summit Counties at an early date, but no records of shipment from any of the areas are available before World War II. It is not known when scheelite was first discovered, but it was recognized in the Stockton mine during World War I. In the counties listed 64 properties are known to contain tungsten; of these, 18 have had some commercial output, although only 3 of them produced in 1953. The total production through 1953 is estimated at 115,000 short-ton units of tungsten trioxide. In 1953 by far the major portion came from the Climax mine.

This report summarizes the results and conclusions reached by various investigators who have attempted to determine the extent to which hydraulic fracturing will affect the secondary recovery of crude oil by waterflooding. It also discusses the most advantageous use of this well-stimulation method in waterflood projects. A thorough search of the literature was made, and pertinent information was abstracted from appropriate reports. A carefully designed and controlled program of formation fracturing is an effective aid in waterflooding because it increases water-injection and oil-production rates. Generally, fracturing has resulted in little or no reduction in ultimate oil recovery, but under certain circumstances recovery has been substantially increased.

This work was performed to demonstrate the technical and commercial viability of the technology to produce tantalum metal directly from tantalum oxide and ore concentrates using a solid-oxide, oxygen-ion-conducting membrane (SOM). The process can be used to efficiently produce tantalum metal without expensive pre-processing of raw materials and without harmful by products. The work reported in this paper is: the proof that high purity tantalum metal can be produced, study of the electrochemical behavior of the cell and the method to increase membrane stability.

Douglas (Dept. of Scientific and lndustrial Re-search, Warren Spring Laboratory, Hertfordshire, England) — The authors are to be congratulated on the considerable improvements they have made in tailoring efficiency and selectivity terms which are generally superior to the alternative forms in current use. However, I feel that their efficiency expression is limited to lower-grade feeds; its accuracy reduces as the feed grade increases. For example, its application to such processes as the beneficiation of glass sands, refractories and clays will invoIve considerable inaccuracies. The reason for this lies in the direct use of recovery, which, with high-grade feeds, biases their empirical expression, R(1 - c/h). With a 90% grade feed, the recovery weighting for the slightest degree of beneficiation, over a zero efficiency sampling operation, will be 90+%+ I disagree with their second basic requirement which states that there can be no fundamental basis for any single quantifying expression. A formula giving a comprehensive representation of concentra- tion efficiency can be derived fundamentally accord-to the procedure outlined in the literature. TheSouthern Alps in the South Island of New Zealand are currently rising rapidly as a consequence of continental collision along the Pacific-Australian plate boundary. Rapid uplift has resulted in a major thermal anomaly in the shallow crust beneath the alps. Alpine topography and associated intense precipitation, coupled with the thermal anomaly are responsible for vigorous combined topographic/convective circulation of water through the shallow crust.   Uplift is greatest in a wedge-shaped region between the Alpine Fault and an associated second-order backthrust system, the Main Divide Fault Zone, approximately 20 km to the east. The Main Divide Fault Zone is segmented into NNE and NE striking faults, which are regionally sub-parallel to the Alpine Fault, but dip northwest in the opposite direction. Reverse oblique-slip on the Main Divide Fault is in an easterly direction, with a greater component of strike-slip movement on the NE trending faults. Elevated topography in the Mt Cook region is related to thrusting of a relatively homoclinal sequence of semi-schistose rocks on top of lower-grade greywacke, which controls the position of the Main Divide. Tectonically induced fluid flow resulted in only minor alteration and hydrothermal mineralisation of fault-rocks in Alpine and Main Divide Faults, and localised deposition of quartz and/or carbonate in the immediate hangingwall.   The wedge between the Alpine and Main Divide Faults is segmented by third-order structures north of the Mount Cook region. A series of right-lateral (-085/700S) and left-lateral (-150/600SW) faults, which are synthetic and antithetic to the Alpine Fault, respectively, developed as a conjugate set during uplift. Fluid-flow in the Southern Alps is controlled by these third-order fault/fracture systems. Cu-Au mineralisation, hydrothermal veins, and surface hot spring activity are localised by third-order fault/fractures and appears to be enhanced where conjugates intersect.

This paper looks at some of the fundamental variances that often occur in the approach to the mechanical design of drum hoists, based on our experiences of recent years. The Central Maratoto Valley in the Coromandel Peninsula contains a sequence of veins in pervasively altered dacite + andesites of the Waipupu Formation. We recognise at least eight different vein types: (1) pyrite stringers, (2) quartz + carbonate veins, (3) crystalline quartz veins, (4) carbonate veins, (5) chlorite + carbonate veins, (6) siderite veinlets, (7) siderite + carbonate veins and (8) carbonate + pyrite veins. The overall temporal trend of the veins is from early pyrite to quartz and then to late carbonate veins. Carbonate veins and pyrite stringers both form planar and irregular veins, whereas some carbonate veins have diffuse contacts with the wall rock. Gold and base metal sulphides are associated with some of the quartz + carbonate veins. Textures within the veins reflect open space filling and multi-phase reopening. A partial record of hydrothermal activity has been preserved by vein crosscutting relationships, hydrothermal alteration minerals and fluid inclusions. Hydrothermal alteration minerals display zonation from south to north. The alteration increases from unaltered to weak propylitic alteration of andesite in the south (MVRCDC1), to sericitic alteration of andesite and dacite in the north (MVRCDC3). The alteration assemblage is dominantly sericitic, with no adularia present, drawing parallels to the Thames region where there is no adularia.

The primary water supply system for the City of San Francisco and adjacent peninsula areas consists of aging and deteriorated pipelines crossing under the San Francisco Bay (the Bay). This system is highly vulnerable to seismic damage from the nearby San Andreas and Hayward fault zones. The Bay Tunnel Project will replace the existing system with a 8-km-long (5-mi-long) tunnel underneath the Bay. The tunnel will be constructed using earth pressure balance methods and will have a two-pass lining system of precast concrete bolted, gasketed segments for initial support, and a welded steel pipe final lining. The project challenges include tunneling through both soft ground and rock conditions without any intermediate shaft access over the entire alignment. Seismic performance criteria include maintaining service flows after a large earthquake.

Um forno a arco elétrico é um tipo de forno industrial que usa uma corrente elétrica alternada para produzir calor. Estes equipamentos servem como uma alternativa para os altos fornos tradicionais, e desempenham um papel importante na produção de aço. Em um forno de arco elétrico, a corrente elétrica passa através dos eletrodos de grafite, do aço e de outros metais, o que resulta na produção de aço de modo mais rápido e eficiente. A queda de tensão no arco é, praticamente, proporcional à distância entre o eletrodo e a carga. O eletrodo corresponde ao polo positivo (+) e a carga o negativo (-). Em corrente alternada os pólos, positivo e negativo, trocam de posição a cada meio ciclo da tensão de rede. Sob condições de arco, forma-se, no eletrodo e na carga, uma finíssima camada altamente ionizada devida a uma altíssima concentração do campo elétrico nestas zonas. No forno o arco se extingue quando a corrente se anula e reacende, quando a tensão volta a crescer. Devido a constantes quebra de eletrodo foi montado o grupo de trabalho com objetivo de reduzir o consumo dos eletrodos, otimização do consumo de energia, redução do Power On, aumento da potência média e redução nas quebras de eletrodos. Esta implantação foi extremamente importante pois o mesmo está garantindo a continuidade operacional, de forma segura e confiável, de um dos equipamentos mais importantes para a produção de aço na Usina.

Electrical trailing cable used to power coal mining machinery is frequently damaged in usage because of tensile strain or crushing effect of mining machines running over the cable. One of the repair problems is finding the exact location of a short or open in this cable so it may be spliced or otherwise repaired. The U.S. Bureau of Mines and FMC corporation signed Contract No. H0 122011 in August, 1971, to develop instrumentation for finding faults in coal mine trailing cable. This report describes performance of several existing instruments as trailing cable fault locators and also construction details and performance records of several cable fault location instruments that FMC designed, built and tested as part of this project.

"The selection of materials and pre-cautionary measures for handling natural gas and condensate containing aqueous hydrogen sulphide are presented. Based on the results of a pilot production test and laboratory studies, together with several years . of operating experience, it was found that the behaviour of materials in sour gas environments can be predicted sufficiently accurately for engineering purposes.The selection of proper materials is essential for preventing sulphide-stress cracking. Where high strength materials are not required, low car-bon steel is used. Components requiring high tensile strength and hardness characteristics should be made from K-monel or properly heat-treated carbon-manganese-molybden-um and AISI 4140 steels. Welded connections are a potential source of sulphide-stress cracking. Consequently high quality welding and strict inspection are suggested as the most economical precautionary measures available.A maintenance program based,. where possible, on visual inspection of equipment and/or test spools located at strategic points should be used to follow weight loss and putting corrosion in sour gas environments. If severe weight loss or pitting corrosion is encountered, inhibitors have been found to be an effective deter-rent."

The technology developed by the authors uses new methods for raw material smelting in electric furnaces, a new autogenous method and apparatus for subliming smelting for antimony trioxide production and separation of antimony and gold. Concentrate produced from the ore deposits in Yakutia has the following average contents of main constituents, % by weight: 29.4 Sb, 1.2 Fe, 13.1 S, 40.0 SiO2, 0.2 As, 2.6 CaO and 45 g/t of Au. Unlike the technology used abroad a new autogenous method makes it possible to increase considerably specific capacity and reduce gold losses with antimony trioxide by several times. At the same time mineralogical composition of trioxide has improved considerably ? it has mainly a cubic base with prevalence of senarmontite. The content of a main component (Sb2O3) in the final product has increased from 99.0% up to 99.6% which means better quality and makes it suitable for use in special technologies. Despite a lower antimony content of the concentrate (29.4% as compared with over 33% as common in the world practice), an antimony recovery of 85.3% into a commercial-grade product has been achieved, as well as a gold recovery of 96.65% into a gold-antimony alloy. The technology for processing gold-antimony materials developed and introduced at the Ryaztsvetmet plant is unique in the world with respect to gold recoveries.

This paper covers only the energy uses of natural resources and does not deal with non- energy uses, which in 1975 were of the order of 10 per cent of the total consumption of energy resources. The United Nations `J' Series of Statistics ex- presses each of the various forms of energy in terms of its coal equivalent in metric tonnes and this basis is followed in this paper. The comminution in a high-pressure roller mill is modeled by an energy-based population balance approach considering three aspects of breakage taking place in the active zones of the mill: the interparticle breakage in the high-compression zone, the breakage at the edges of the rolls, and the pre-breakage in the acceleration zone. Together with an appropriate model of classification, this model can be used to simulate steady-state performance of closed-circuit grindings with high-pressure roller mill. After a brief description of the basic modeling approach, the algorithm of the steady-state calculation for a generalized grinding-classification circuit is presented, from which the circuit configurations commonly met in industrial practice can be derived. With an iron ore as feed material for example, simulation results are shown and discussed in respect of circulating load, specific energy consumption and product fineness for closed-circuit grindings under various operating conditions. The effects of stressing intensity, working gap, classifier parameters as well as circuit configuration on the overall circuit performance are investigated systematically by means of computer simulation.

It is almost exactly two hundred years since the foundations of the mining and metallurgical industries in Canada were laid. There '."'as nothing spectacular about this early start. It had to do with the most basic phases of these industries-the mining of coal and iron ore, and the manufacture of cast and wrought iron. At several points along the coast of Cape Breton island, coal seams may be seen outcropping quite conspicuously, and it is probable that they had been observed, and possibly worked in a small way, in very early times. However that may be, these coal seams have the distinction of being the first in North America of which there is any printed record, reference to them appearing in a volume by Nicolas Denys which was published in Paris in 1672. Regular coal mining in the district did not commence until about fifty years later, however. The metallurgists started their operations along the north shore of the St. Lawrence river. Here, at many points between Montreal and Quebec, are to be found deposits of bog iron ore, and in 1 730 a furnace for smelting such ore was established on the St. Maurice river. The St. Maurice forges continued in operation until 1880, and throughout that long period they were famed for the fine quality of castings produced, and also for a-superior wrought iron.

A glance at the following chart reveals that because of the continued poor economy, the slump in industrial mineral production continued into 1980. Gypsum was down 17% from 1979; cement down 9%, sand and gravel, 17%, and crushed stone, 11%. All these downward trends reflect the high interest rates and high costs that slowed construction starts. Domestic fluorspar was down 21% and imports off 14% due to the steel iudustry slump. However, potash production was up 8% and phosphate, 5%. Increased drilling activity spurred au increase in barite production of 25%. Most other industrial minerals posted losses with only a few insignificant increases. As expected, prices were higher, reflecting increases due to high costs for labor, supplies, and above all, energy. Increasing energy and transportation costs also had their effect on industrial mineral production. Railroad freight rates increased 16-22% including fuel surcharge; truck rates increased 11-14%a; and ocean freight rates increased 20% for finished goods. The 1979 shortage of boa and hopper cars did not continue into 1980-most likely due to low production of many of the hulk industrial mineral commodities. All in all, 1980 was not a good Year for industrial minerals.
