Instability in rockpasses at deep levels often initiates as a result of stress induced fracturing of the rock on the walls of the pass. This may then progress to a stage at which the geological structure of the rock mass becomes dominant and permits large joint-defined blocks and slabs to become unstable. In this paper, a technique is described in which jointing parameters and their variabilities?orientations, spacings and lengths?are taken into account in estimating the extent of failure that may develop around a typical unsupported deep level gold mine rockpass. The results of this prediction are compared with the results obtained from a review of pass performance in the gold mining industry.

This paper presents design and implementation details of a fuzzy-behavior-based controller for an automated excavator. The robotic excavator is equipped with sensors, actuators and an embedded control system. The excavator controller uses neural-networks to interpret forces and torques gathered during the excavation process from bucket-mounted force sensors. Implementation details card experimental results using the fuzzy-behavior-based excavation controller are given for several excavation tasks. These excavation tasks demonstrate some of the complex skills that are essential for an autonomous mining-excavator controller.

"NioCorp is developing the niobium/scandium/titanium Elk Creek carbonatite resource deposit. The carbonatite phase contains significant niobium (0.71% Nb2O5), titanium (2.68% TiO2) and scandium (72 g/t) and is composed predominantly of calcite, dolomite and ankerite. Niobium is mostly (80%) contained in the pyrochlore and the balance in various Fe-Nb-Ti oxides, which also host most of the titanium. Scandium is distributed homogeneously throughout the ore mineral assemblage. The process flowsheet recovers separate niobium, titanium and scandium products. Scandium is extracted from whole ore hydrochloric acid leach solutions through solvent extraction, and is further refined through a re-leach and precipitation process. Scandium leach residues are treated with sulphuric acid to recover separate niobium and titanium precipitates. Both hydrochloric acid and sulphuric acid reagents are recycled within the flowsheet. This paper will discuss key bench and pilot test results (focusing on the scandium flowsheet) and will present a conceptual flowsheet developed by the project team for NioCorp at SGS Minerals.INTRODUCTION NioCorp is developing North America's only niobium/scandium/titanium project. The Elk Creek project is located near Elk Creek, Nebraska, and is the highest grade niobium project in North America and the largest prospective producer of scandium in the world. These elements are unique and valuable superalloy materials that are strategic and critical to many industries and national defense technologies. The project includes the Elk Creek Carbonatite (the Carbonatite) that intruded older Precambrian granitic and low to medium grade metamorphic basement rocks. Both the carbonatite and Precambrian rocks are interpreted to be unconformably overlain by approximately 200 meters (m) of Paleozoic marine sedimentary rocks of Pennsylvanian age. As a result of this thick cover, there is no surface outcrop within the Project area of the carbonatite, which was identified and targeted through magnetic surveys and confirmed through subsequent drilling. The available magnetic data indicate dominant northeast, west-northwest striking lineaments, and secondary northwest and north oriented features that mimic the position of regional faults parallel and/or perpendicular to the Nemaha Uplift."

Between 1966 and 1976, Australia moved from being a non-producer to a position of meeting more than ten per cent of world nickel demand. New mine developments beginning the early-1990s have the promise of more than doubling the country's world market share - from around eight per cent to perhaps close to 20 per cent. This new surge in activity - the so-called `second nickel boom' - has led to several developments which seem likely to have similar economic impacts to those of the late- 1960s and early-1970s. There are, however, some notable differences this time around. The impact of long distance commuting over the past 30 years has changed the regional development scenario. The gold industry is much stronger in Australia than it was in the late-1960s and this helps to place the importance of new nickel discoveries in a more realistic perspective. As potential players have jockeyed to complete feasibility studies and move into construction and production phases of new long-life mines, established suppliers clearly seem to be taking actions to discourage the newcomers. In what appears to be a classic oligipolistic market situation, the heightening of perceived entry barriers to the industry appears to be a particularly visible strategy undertaken. In the current scenario as well, greater vertical integration among producers appears a significant influence on market power.

Brake testing of large mining trucks was initiated in British. Columbia in 1969 following an accident involving the failure of the service brakes of a l00-ton electric-drive truck. Some selected results of the 1976 brake test program are presented and discussed ?in this paper . The tests were conducted on end- dump trucks having load capacities ranging from 85 to 235 tons. All tests were made with the vehicles fully loaded operating on downhill grades varying from 8 to 10 %. Stopping distances were measured from initial speeds varying between 10 and 39 mph. The results are adequate, in most cases, to determine the "ultimate" capabilities of the service brakes of varying models and sizes of haulage trucks operating in British Columbia mines.

The 1,000 MW Hydro Power Station Masjed-e-Soleiman (formerly called Godar-e-Landar) in Iran is under construction since 1992. The rock engineering aspects of the major underground structure, i.e. the powerhouse cavern shall be reported on in detail. The geotechnical investigations are described and results given. The results of several geotechnical analyses are presented. The designed and executed rock support is given. A description of the monitoring systems and typical measurement results obtained during and after excavation are presented. The lessons learnt during construction of the Stage-I powerhouse cavern were applied on the extension of the powerhouse cavern, which is to house an additional 1000 MW. The reaction temperature was controlled at between 1400°C to 1600°C. The synthesized products were mixtures of alumina and silicon carbide in the form of whiskers. The effects of milling time of precursors and reaction temperature are presented. XRD and SEM analyses indicate complete reaction of precursors to yield Al2O3-SiC as product powders, with the SiC having porous and whisker morphology.

The idea of using apron feeders for in directly feeding crushers is not a new one, it has been used for many years. To the best of our knowledge, the first apron feeder was used for bulk material handling in 1893. Since that time many design innovations have been introduced, with perhaps the most effective one being, the application of crawler tractor components in the feeder construction. This design was first introduced to the mining industry in 1954 by, national iron company. These feeders were used in the handling of run-of-mine iron ore on the Minnesota iron range, at the rate of 1,000 ltph. The material was fed over a grizzly to a jaw type of crusher. The crusher output was also handled by an apron feeder. Today, the apron feeder is being used in hard rock surface mine operations feeding crushers at rates of 5,500 ltph and over.

During the 1980s and early 1990s, the South African coal industry experienced a series of methane explosions in which well over 200 coal miners lost their lives. In addition, a fire and an explosion in the gold mining sector claimed a further 240 lives. These tragic incidents resulted in the establishment of a research facility at Kloppersbos dedicated to explosion and fires research and the funding of an extensive research program, and almost certainly influenced the government of the day in its decision to establish, in 1993, the Leon Commission of Enquiry into Mine Health and Safety. The results of this focused research program, the wide-ranging recommendations of the Leon Commission and the determination of the coal mining industry to improve its safety record all combined to result in the past 20 years without a major explosion.This paper lists some of the research outcomes and, through three case studies, illustrates what can be learnt from investigations following explosions. The paper concludes with an evaluation of some of the findings of the Royal Commission on the Pike River coal tragedy. Many of the Commission’s conclusions are pertinent and relevant to the coal mining industry worldwide and their implementation could significantly improve coalmine safety; however, a careful study of the available facts indicates there could well be an alternative explanation of the source of the methane, the location of the ignition and the size of the explosion at the Pike River coalmine.CITATION:Phillips, H R, 2015. In this study, coke oven tar additions over a range of 0?8 wt.% were evaluated as a possible substitute for imported coal fractions. The coke oven tar used was collected from tar decanters in the byproducts section of the coking plant. The moisture content in the tar varied depending on the residence time and water carryover from the coke oven tar separators to the storage tanks. Moisture contents of 1 wt.%, 3 wt.%, and 6 wt.% were investigated in order to evaluate the effect on coal blend, carbonization, and coke properties. At 6 wt.% moisture content with 6 wt.% coke oven tar, although the coke quality improved the yield showed a 4% decrease. On the other hand, 1 wt.% moisture content with coke oven tar of 6 wt.%, increased the yield by 1% and the coke quality improved. However, the latter process was characterized by an excessive increase in wall pressure and pushing energy, both of which are detrimental to the oven walls. The optimum moisture content in coke oven tar was found to be 3 wt.% with a coke oven tar addition of 6 wt.% in the coal blend. With these conditions, the coke properties improved and wall pressure and pushing energy were acceptable. However, a decrease in coke yield of up to 2% was observed. Despite this, coke oven tar addition is considered to be a viable option based upon economic factors of a reduction in the quantity and cost of imported coking coals that is required to achieve the same optimum final coke product. "INTRODUCTION Because of its interest in accident prevention, the Federal Bureau of Mines has cooperated with city officials and utilities in investigating the causes of explosions in sewers, manholes, and other underground spaces and has aided in the development of means to prevent such explosions. For several years this Bureau has cooperated with the Boston Edison Co. and the Boston Consolidated Gas Co. of Boston, Mass.,for the purpose of detecting and eliminating combustible and physiologically harmful gases in manholes in Boston and vicinity.These investigations 5/ have shown that combustible gases from the usual sources — leakage from gas—distributing systems and underground tanks and gasoline wastes — can be located and the dangerous conditions remedied by a well—planned, adequately supervised, systematic, and continuous manhole survey. However, other types of gas contamination, termed ""soil"" gases, are present in manholes at times and are more difficult to eliminate because they have no fixed origin and because seasonal and barometric chances affect their production and passage into the manhole. Soil gases usually are abnormally high in carbon dioxide and low in oxygen and contain varying amounts of methane. They are especially dangerous to men entering manholes because they lack sufficient oxygen to support life."

Carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (18CNMR) spectra of nine 2-substituted pyridines, seven 3 -substituted pyridines, and nine 4-substituted pyridines have been obtained and analyzed. Substituents included both electron-releasing groups and electron-with hawing groups. Substituent effects on the magnetic shieldings of the ring carbons, except for those in the 2-positions of 2-substituted pyridines, were found to be quite similar to the effects reported for the monosubstituted benzenes, Thus, at least to a first approximation, the two classes of compounds have similar shielding mechanisms. Shieldings of the carbon atoms in the 5-positions of 2-substituted pyridines and those in the 6-positions of 3-substituted pyridines were found to reflect electron release or withdrawal by substituent groups, The pyridinium cation and the compounds 2,2'-dipyridyl and benzonitrile were also investigated.

This paper gives the cost and describes the mining of 55 tons of nickel-bearing rock by hand methods from a prospect in southern Nevada, June 15, 1937, by the Mining Division of the Bureau of Mines. The geology, mineralogy, and problems related to future development also are discussed briefly. The main object was to obtain a 55-ton sample within the limited period during which funds were available; little time was available to make a first-hand detailed study of the possibility of commercial ore deposits being found. The sample was desired by the Metallurgical Division of the Bureau for experimental purposes at the Electro-Metallurgical Station at Boulder City, Nev. The term "ore" is used loosely in the following discussion to designate dike material containing nickel and copper, without consideration of its commercial value. A few years ago, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and Unimin Corporation developed a clothes cleaning system that is able to quickly, effectively, and safely remove dust from a worker?s clothing without dust exposure to the worker, the work environment, or co-workers during the cleaning process. To perform the process, a worker enters a cleaning booth and activates an air spray manifold which blows the dust from the worker?s clothing. Since the cleaning booth is under negative pressure, all the dust and product removed are contained. In the original design, this dust-laden air was exhausted to a dust collector system. However, since most operations do not have excess dust collector capacity, it was decided to determine an alternative method to provide for a stand-alone cleaning system. This was achieved by ducting the exhaust outside the plant and into the atmosphere. This technique was recently tested and shown to be a viable method to provide for a stand-alone clothes cleaning system.

Ten composite samples of Mesabi Range nonmagnetic taconite from the Hibbing, Minn., area were evaluated by flotation and by reduction roasting-magnetic separation to determine their potential as a future source of iron are. Only one of the composites yielded concentrates that could be considered marketable, using as a criterion a 10-to-1 iron-to-silica ratio. Cursory petrographic examinations of all 10 composited samples and a detailed mineralogical study on 1 sample suggest that unfavorable mineralogical associations between iron and gangue minerals are responsible for their poor beneficiation characteristics.

"This paper presents a case study on bored pile construction in challenging karst conditions below a supertall building in Kuala Lumpur. Innovative design and construction techniques helped keep the project moving through very difficult and unpredictable geological and drilling conditions. The development encompasses about 12,400 square meters and includes a 77-story tower, a 59-story tower, a five-story podium, and four contiguous basement levels. The site is underlain by a residual soil derived from a siltstone/claystone (the Kenny Hill formation), then limestone bedrock. Subsurface conditions are relatively uniform within the Kenny Hill and highly variable at the limestone surface. Extreme cases included 40-meter-tall underground caverns, 40-meter-tall pinnacles, and a 50-meter-tall underground rock ledge. Local piling practice in Kuala Lumpur involves deriving pile capacity entirely in the Kenny Hill formation to avoid the unpredictable limestone surface. However, the massive tower foundation loads and relatively shallow bedrock required the piles to be socketed in the limestone. The 77-story tower will be supported by 2.0- and 2.2-meter-diameter bored piles 50 to 100+ meters long, socketed in limestone, with working loads between 40 and 70 Meganewtons. Two Osterberg-cell load tests were used to develop a site-specific rock socket skin friction correlation with RQD. Exploratory rock probes were drilled at each pile location to design the rock socket length based on the rock quality and sloping rock conditions. The rock mass was pressure-grouted during each rock probe to improve the rock quality and fill voids in the rock.INTRODUCTIONThe Kuala Lumpur City Centre, home of the Petronas Towers and the world’s deepest foundations, will be the future home of a new supertall tower. The 77-story tower will be supported by a piled-raft foundation that relies on piles terminating in the highly erratic, karstic Kuala Lumpur limestone formation. The high building loads coupled with relatively shallow limestone across the majority of the tower footprint forced the piles to extend into the limestone."

High resolution seismic refraction tomography has proved to be a useful tool to effectively estimate depth of blast induced damage in a mine face. Excavation blast damage can be as shallow as 1 to 2m and requires resolution at a fraction of a meter for effective imaging. We used an accelerometer with flat frequency response to 1000Hz to record data at spacings of approximately 0.25 to 0.5m along mine walls. First arrival times from the seismic data were used to produce P-wave velocity tomograms. The tomograms show transition from low velocity zones to velocity associated with competent rock. We interpret the low velocity zones to indicate residual fracturing from blasting. Experiments on a concrete test block and at two underground mine locations give results that are consistent with fractured rock transitioning to competent rock. Our method can be applied efficiently in an underground environment to provide continuous velocity information with depth into a mine wall over a span of approximately 10m.
