La finalización de la estimación de reservas de un modelo de mina cuestiona la asertividad del modelo de Mina para la planeación minera. En ese sentido, el presente texto señala la Reconciliación como la comparación real histórica de tonelaje, leyes y contenido fino estimado, entre el modelo de mina y planta concentradora. La reconciliación permite conocer y ajustar mediante el uso de factores, la planeación mensual y anual de los siguientes años de la operación minera, y así cumplir con los compromisos mensuales asumidos de envío de contenido fino desde mina. Así también se muestra el proceso que sigue la explotación minera a tajo abierto en Toquepala, las variables que influyen en la variación de la reconciliación y algunas pautas a considerar para minimizar estos errores de reconciliación entre mina y concentradora.

"The Sturgeon Lake Joint Venture volcanic massive sulpide deposit was discovered in 1970. Milling was started by Falconbridge Copper Ltd. at Sturgeon Lake in September 1974. The Sturgeon Lake pit and mill are located 88 kilometers by road northeast of Ignace, Ontario. IgnE1ce is a town of some 2800 people located on the Trans-Canada Highway, 241 kilometers west-northwest of Thunder Bay. The mill is treating an average of 1100 TPD producing separate concentrates of copper, lead and zinc. Initially, difficulties were experienced in achieving accept-able concentrate grades and recoveries but these were eventually overcome. This presentation describes current metallurgical strategy as practiced at the Sturgeon Lake mill.But first, a few words about the type of ore being treated. In geological terms the ore is classified into two main categories. They are the massive sulphides with underlying zones of stringer sulphides as illustrated in Fig. 1. The plan view is shown in Fig. 2. The areas of East-limb and North-limb are as shown. These last two ores have suffered enough alteration to cause problems during treatment. The massive sulphides consist of chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena, tetrahedrite and small amounts of pyrrhotite among other gangue materials. The stringer ore is comprised of predominantly chalcopyrite intrusions into rhyolite and has lesser amounts of sphalerite and tetrahedrite. At present we are treating a predetermined blend of massive and stringer ores from zones that have been metallurgically tested to ensure compatibility with current treatment procedure in the plant. Ore responding to this treatment is classified as normal ore while the ore proving incompatible is classified as north-limb ore or east-limb ore."

In 1972, the Bureau of Mines of the U. S. Department of the Interior commissioned the development and design of a Simulator for research and testing of mine roof supports used in long-wall mining. The purpose of the Simulator is to reproduce forces and displacements of a section of a mine roof in contact with one or more supports. This report is an account of the design process that resulted in the final configuration of the Simulator presented here. It includes discussions of engineering considerations that led to major changes in important details of the Simulator. These changes, however, did not substantially alter the basic design originally proposed, except for the elimination of certain originally-specified features that were adjudged as insufficiently cost-effective by both the Bureau of Mines and the design agent at an intermediate stage of the design.

THE MAGNITUDE of the anthracite industry's drainage problem in the Lackawanna River drainage area is realized when it is known that in 1948 the 27 pumping plants in this region pumped over 48 billion gallons of water to the surface from the mines in the Lackawanna Basin of the Northern field. This is almost 92,000 gallons per minute pumped against an average hydrostatic head of over 300 feet for that year. By comparison, Lake Wallenpaupack, the largest artificial body of water lying wholly in Pennsylvania, contains 71 billion gallons of water in its 24-square-mile area: the volume of water pumped from the mines in the Lackawanna Basin during 1948 was approximately 68 percent of that impounded in Lake Wallenpaupack. The Lackawanna. River and its tributaries drain a troughlike area of 345 square miles. The synclinal axis of this trough lies within the coal measures. All surface drainage into the valley must traverse some part of the coal measures. On the basis of 45.03 inches of rainfall recorded by the Scranton station of the United States Weather Bureau for 1948, the runoff from the Lackawanna River drainage area during that period was 135 billion gallons, approximately three times the volume of water pumped by all mine pumping plants in the Lackawanna. Coal refuse slurries stored in tailings impoundments can potentially lead to environmental concerns such as effluent seepage, property devaluation, and in extreme cases, dam failures. Pressure filtration offers an opportunity to reduce the impoundment requirements by providing significantly drier solids. A full-factorial design was used to study the effects of temperature and pH on dewatering a refuse slurry obtained from a coal preparation facility in Pennsylvania, USA. The experimental results indicated a strong effect of temperature on cake moisture as the cake moisture after about 2800 s was 22% at 43 °C and only 36% at 10 °C for tests conducted at pH 3. ANOVA results confirmed the statistical significance of pH, temperature, and their interaction effect. Also, the results showed no significant differences between the tests conducted near neutral and alkaline pH values at low and ambient temperatures. On the other hand, Tukey's test indicated higher reductions in cake moisture at higher temperatures for lower pH values. This study affirms the need to monitor and control the pressure filtration process as throughput could significantly vary with changes in temperature and slurry conditions.

This report is a summary of the work performed for the Bureau of Mines to evaluate the feasibility and desirability of a movable in-pit crusher combined with conveyors to substantially reduce or eliminate truck or train haulage in large open-pit non-fuel mineral mines. The report includes an introduction and summary of previous work, an analysis of movable crusher system components, a description of the selected system, a review of possible movable crusher system applications, and finally requirements for future work to bring about the general availability of such systems. It was clear from the program that there is a real need for movable in-pit crushers.

Since the introduction of water cooled test rings the operation of cupelling retort bullion has not alone been sImplified, but has also been the means of concentrating the bullion for the fining test in a much shorter time.The first water cooled test ring which I used was rectangular in shape, inside dimensions 5 ft. 3 in. x 2 ft. IQ in., and made of i in. mild steel plates, with a water space of 9i in. x 3t in. However, it was found that as soon as the filling commenced to wear and the litharge came in contact with the jacket, the plate was gradually affected on the lines of the wash, caused by the blast. After a while the inside steel plate went beyond the factor of safety, and was then substituted on the sides and the front of the test ring by a tin copper plate, which has stood now for the last five years without showing the least signs of wear or leakage.The test remains in use as long as the bottom is regarded as safe, and toward the end of the life of the test the litharge is allowed to work against the copper plate.

Researchers from the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and personnel from Coeur Silver Valley, Wallace, ID, conducted tests using rock strain strips and Split-Set rock bolts instrumented with strain gauges to monitor wall rock strain at the Galena Mine, Osburn, ID. The objective of the test was to identify whether strain on the rock bolts increased prior to a rock burst. Although results were inconclusive, researchers learned that the Split-Set rock bolts yielded in stick-slip fashion in the highly jointed walls of the stope. The bolts were also bent as stress was redistributed following blasting and subsequent movement along joints in the wall rocks.

The dictionary defines 'jargon' as "barbarous or debased language". This description does not suffice. Quiller-Couch has said, it is "a kind of writing which, from a superficial likeness, commonly passes for prose in these days, and by lazy folk is commonly written for prose, yet actually is not prose at all ". The two main vices of jargon, he says, are "that it uses circumlocution rather than short straight speech", like the Babu who reported his mother's death by saying: "Regret to inform you, the hand that rocked the cradle has kicked the bucket ". Its other chief' vice is that "it habitually chooses vague woolly abstract nouns rather than concrete ones", like the newspaper statement; "He was conveyed to his place of residence in an intoxicated condition", instead of saying, "He was carried home drunk ". Jargon is "an infirmity of speech", it is not journalese, but akin to it. "Like respect- ability in Chicago, jargo4 stalks unchecked in our midst" and renders much technical writing ridiculous. It deals in periphrasis instead of going straight to the point, it loves the abstract rather than the concrete, it dabbles in words of sound rather than of meaning. Avoid it, despise it., if you purpose earnestly to write well. "III literature as in life he makes himself felt who not only calls 4 spade a spade but has the pluck to double spades and re-double." * Jargon is rampant in technical publications. This paper is directed at interested parties outside the Beach Sand Industry : the scope is quite broad. The geomorphology described is a successful working hypothesis which guided the author during prospecting and pegging campaigns : the author is not an expert in this field. The test data used in the text, for illustrative purposes, is original and may constitute a contribution to the state of the art. The operation- al and design philosophy embodied in the text is personal and describes the author's methods : all practising exponents would differ in some degree amongst themselves on these subjects. In this paper, no criticism of any existing operation or brand of equipment is intended and names are used to maintain a real contact with the subject matter. The author believes that the operational and design techniques evolved in the Beach Sand Industry under continual duress, have a wider application in the mining industry. This glimpse of the Industry is intended to enhance the respect for the present and past members. Space does not permit individual acknowledgements.

Because of the danger to life and property in a coal mine if an oil or natural gas well should be accidentally intersected during mining operations, certain precautionary measures should be carried out prior to entering previously unmined areas. The locations of all wells both at the surface and at the depth of the coalbed should be accurately determined. The condition of the well should be learned from surface observations, and more importantly, from subsurface examination by geophysical logging devices where possible. It is also desirable to learn the physical properties of the hydrocarbon-bearing rock formation and the hydrocarbon fluids. The major hazard presented by oil or natural gas wells to mining operations is that of explosion and fire due to the rapid release of gas into the mine atmosphere. Wellbore pressure, the principal index of danger, should be determined by one or more of the methods described and by a service company such as those listed in the appendix. Because of high pressures involved and the consequent hazard, much emphasis has been placed on underground storage of natural gas in areas containing minable coalbeds. Maps are shown of the principal coal producing areas and the locations of currently active gas storage reservoirs. A checklist has been included of factors to be considered when mining coal in an area where oil or gas wells exist.

We describe inconsistencies in disease and illness reporting in U.S. mining, identify under-reporting of disease and illness in U.S. mining, and summarize selected disease and illness in U.S. mining from 1983 through 2001. Methods: We summarized information on mining-related disease and illness data for the years 1983-2001 from the Mining Safety and Health Administration database (MSHA). Results: Discrepancies exist in types of information collected by the Centers for Disease and Control, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, and the Mining Safety and Health Admin¬istration database. Several factors, including a worker's fear of losing his or her job, health insurance, or other job-related benefits contribute to under-reporting of disease and illness information in the US mining industry. Conclusions: Since 1997, both number of workers employed in mining and disease and illness rates have decreased; however, the highest disease and illness rates in mining continue to be coal worker's pneumoconiosis and hearing loss.

ASBESTOS is a name applied to a group of naturally fibrous minerals. As indicated in a later section devoted to a detailed discussion of the early history of asbestos, the tern may be defined as a. fibrous form of serpentine or amphibole. It does not include fibrous forms of other minerals, such as wollastonite, nemalite (fibrous brucite), or the fibrous forms of calcite or gypsum. A material that has the characteristics of silk or cotton and at the same time will not burn is unique. Because it combines these qualities with other advantageous properties, asbestos has specialized uses for which no substitutes are yet available. Asbestos furnishes a major raw material for a great variety of essential products and their manufacture constitutes a vast industry. The United States leads all countries in the manufacture of asbestos products. The value of such commodities manufactured in 1952 exceeded $332 million. They are not only of vast importance to budding construction and industry but axe absolutely, essential to certain important fields of use, for example, steam packings and friction materials, such as brake-band linings on automobiles.

This report contains a description of the contract activities performed by ENSCO, Inc. under contract No. H0178069. The purpose of this project was to enhance the Bureau of Mine?s Cableless Electronic Survey System use to aid in the drilling of long (approx. 2000 feet) boreholes in coal. This drilling is performed as part of the methane drainage program. The system that was ultimately developed was field tested 2nd demonstrated in actual in-mine drilling activities. The significance of this system as compared to previous drill survey systems is the fact that it surveys without having to be inserted and removed for each survey point. It is so designed that it can withstand the shock and vibration experience by the drill string during drilling. This means an increased productivity is now possible in that drill operators can determine drill bit positioning in a near real-time environment.

The Haile mine has been the outstanding gold-mining operation and the largest single producer of gold in the Appalachian region. Gold was discovered at the Haile in 1827, previous to the present operation, production has been nearly $4,500,000 (gold at $20.67 per ounce.) from somewhat over a million tons of ore, with an average extraction of about 70 percent. The Haile property, now operated by Haile Gold Mines, Inc., is in the southern part of Lancaster County, South Carolina, 3-1/2 miles northeast of the town of Kershaw and 55 miles north of Columbia, the State capital. (See fig. 1.) The corporation has a lease and purchase contract on 1,805 acres, covering the present productive area. In addition, it holds lease contracts on 1,500 acres additional adjacent to this area.

IN the underground department of a mine, we may fairly say that "good management is based upon three elementals: first, sound engineering; second, proper coordination and efficiency of every human unit; third, economy in the purchase and consumption: of supplies.This paper is practically an analysis of the second element; which stands out prominently as the most important in the winning of successful results. The human units are divided into officers and men. The officers intermesh. One man takes responsibility where another throws it down; incessantly new conditions are arising where they may be doubtful of their powers; and always, on account of the three shifts, varying methods of work are coming into conflict. This very often results in disorganization. What is most necessary to guard against this is an esprit de corps, which would influence officers to stifle personal feelings for the general welfare of the department, To secure co-operation and loyalty of the staff, the writer recommends for the mines of the field a system of profit-sharing. Distributed on a salary basis, together with liberal holidays (not less than three weeks in each year) on full pay...

During the fiscal year most of the work of the division was done at the experiment stations in College Park, Md., Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Seattle, Wash.
