Deep tunnels have been used for decades for the temporary storage of large volumes of urban runoff, both storm water and combined sewer overflow (CSO). Tunnels are attractive because they reduce surface disruption and do double duty as storage and conveyance systems, collecting overflows from multiple locations and transporting them for treatment to various facilities. Like any hydraulic system, however, there are dynamic effects that must be fully understood during the design phase so that the final constructed product does not have unintended negative consequences. Preliminary sizing of storage tunnels is typically based on the total volume required. For example, if studies have determined that a volume of 56.8 ML (15 million gal) will provide the intended level of control, then that figure can be used, along with a preliminary idea of the desired tunnel length, to compute the required diameter. Of course, filling a long tube with water from various points along the way is not at all the same as pouring water into a bucket, and these dynamic effects require additional attention from design engineers. The rapid filling of storage tunnels can lead to the formation of bores, which are essentially moving walls of water. An open channel bore can build in height until it reaches the crown of the tunnel, at which point it becomes a pipe-filling bore. Figure 1 depicts both kinds of bores moving upwards in a rapidly filling tunnel. Bores can strike the ends of tun-nels with tremendous force, driving water and entrained air upwards into dropshafts and creating strong pressure surges in portions of the tunnel that are already filled. If the hydraulic surges are high enough to reach grade, they can cause overflows and/or damage structures at the surface. Trapped air pockets can occur through several phenomena, including the reflection of bores off dropshaft structures and the occurrence of ?premature pressurization.? The latter refers to the situation where the inflow to a tunnel is increasing more rapidly than the tunnel can convey it, such that the pipe becomes surcharged at an upstream point while points downstream are still flowing as an open channel. These air pockets are a great nuisance as they migrate toward points in the tunnel where they can rise to the surface, which are often shafts that are already filled with water (Fig. 2). Over 60 simple; were prepared and forwarded to Dr, S. Z. Toma, TPO, PMSRC as a result of this project. Included among these samples were various low temperature forms of silica. Samples of quartz, cristobalite, and tridymite with iron, manganese, and titanium impurities present were prepared. In addition, a long series of samples both wet ground and dry ground for times from 1/2 to 8 hours were prepared. Numerous miscellaneous samples were submitted which included kaolinite, calcite, muscovite, illite, montmorillonite, Ba3(P04)2, and YPO4 among others, in response to special requests from the TPO. The silica rich portion of selected binary (CA 203-Si02, In 203-Si02, Li20-Si02) Na20-Si02, PbO-Si02, SnO2-Si02, Sn02-Si02 BaGa204-SiO2 and SrGa204-Si02) and ternary systems (Na20-Ga203-Si02 and Li20-Ga203-Si02) was investigated to determine the effects of solid solubility on the stabilization of the high temperature forms of tridymite. In addition to the determination of the extent of these crystalline solubilities, observations were made. on the mechanism of the transformation of silicic acid to tridymite and the rate of the reaction in the presence of foreign ions,

There is an increasing demand for refrigeration as mines progress deeper. Mine refrigeration plants have special requirements in terms of their duty and application. There are no national or international standards applicable for the testing of these plants. There have been numerous examples of plants failing to meet their required nominal capacity, but with the plant owner being unable to enforce the design duty on the manufacturer, due to a failure to unambiguously specify testing or accepting criteria. This paper discusses some of the reasons for performance shortcomings and describes a methodology for developing and specifying performance criteria, when inviting design and/or construction tenders, and a method of performance and acceptance testing once the plant has been built and commissioned. These guidelines encompass the full range of performance duties expected from a mine plant, including stable operation at maximum and minimum plant capacity, and under the various combinations of extremes of high and low condensing and evaporating pressures. A description of a methodology for developing a computer-based mine refrigeration plant model is also presented as part of the performance testing criteria. The methodology is illustrated with reference to the actual performance and acceptance testing process used on the worldÆs largest bulk air cooler (R67) at the Enterprise mine at Mount Isa, Australia.

Editor’s note: Mining companies doing business in Central Asia, and parts of the developing world, should look for ways to promote community development through the introduction of appropriate technology. This article should be of interest to SME members. It shows sustainable development type projects need not be massive or expensive. Smaller, utilitarian projects are equally valuable to developing communities as they seek to develop their own economic and social infrastructures. Joint Development Associates International (JDA) began humanitarian relief and community development in Central Asia in 1992, following the collapse of the former Soviet Union. Appropriate technology has played an important role in the company’s efforts to assist those segments of society that are most vulnerable to poverty and disease.

This document presents the explosion-proof enclosures used severity of certification tests solutions to linear transient thermal and stress analyses of in underground mines. The results were used to assess the for enclosure windows relative to possible loads occurring in the actual mine environment. Cast iron electric light enclosures with polycarbonate and glass windows were analyzed under steady state thermal conditions (light burning) and for thermal shocks corresponding to an internal explosion (ignition of volatile mine gas) or external quenching (mine water spray system). Thermal shocks to the enclosure, caused by ignited gases or water spray, were applied via a series of load steps in the transient analysis. The temperature dependence of material I properties and of the film heat transfer coefficients were included in the model. The work demonstrates that thermally induced stresses are strongly influenced by the way the window is mounted in the enclosure. It also shows that the MSHA Thermal Shock Test, if performed on an unsupported lens (or window), produces lower stresses than the lens (or window) may experience in the mine environment.

This report is the 21st in a series summarizing research and technologic work on coal and related investigations by the Federal Bureau of Mines - the Chard of the series published on a calendar-year basis 2/ Subject publica¬tions of the Bureau during 1956 are cited, and pertinent Bureau work is described briefly. The most effective method of conserving our important coal reserves is through improved technology of production and utilization. Associated problems form the program of the Bureau.3 4 5 6/ Potential production is depend¬ent on a knowledge of the quantity and quality of the reserves, and the Bureau continues to contribute information on this subject. Many problems are being studied that relate to improvements in current production, including mining methods and health and safety measures. Preparation of mined coal is necessary for its most efficient utilization. Preparation by conventional methods is being studied, as well as the development or new methods. Fundamental studies on the structure and properties of coal are necessary to insure full advantage of the special qualities of different coals. Controlling factors in the efficient use of coal in combustion, carbonization, gasification, and direct and indirect hydrogenation of coal are being studied continuously, and new processes are being investigated. The many advances in all these fields are discussed.

The Victory Bridge project was contracted by the New Jersey Department of Transportation. The project included the construction of two 4000-ft precast segmental concrete bridges to replace the existing Victory Bridge that was built in the 1920's. The existing bridge was a swing span bridge that was in desperate need of replacement. The project was considered high priority due to the large maintenance costs to keep the swing span operating over the busy navigational channel. In March of 2003 construction began on the first bridge and by April of 2005 all of the segments were set for the second bridge. On September 5 of 2005 the second bridge was open to traffic. The total cost of the project was $110-million. The two new bridges required the construction of 24-eight foot and 32-six foot diameter-drilled shafts with rock sockets. All of the shafts were constructed in the tidal Raritan River working from barges. What will follow is a description of the construction techniques that were used to build these drilled shafts, the anticipated and unanticipated challenges that were encountered during the project, and the lessons learned.

Modelling of pyrometallurgical processes can become extremely challenging when the process involves complex chemical reactions, phase change, multiphase flows, heat and mass transfer and fluid flow. Traditionally modelling involving complex thermodynamic equilibrium and thermochemistry are treated separately from problems in which transport phenomena are dominant, such as CFD and heat transfer studies. The separation is also necessary due to the lack of modelling tools that can effectively couple both solution thermodynamic and transport phenomena or even multiphysics problems. However, there are, quite often, problems in high temperature process metallurgy in which it is not possible to simplify this two modelling approaches. Typical cases of this are for example, the modelling of slag freezing on furnace walls (electric or flash furnaces) to create a protective layer in front of the refractories hot wall, the formation of build up from the matte or metal phases at the hearth of the furnace, calcine smelting from charging piles into slag phase, etc. The problem is even more challenging in nonferrous pyrometallurgy as most, if not all, of the condense phases are highly non ideal solutions involving several components and exhibiting complex crystallization paths and miscibility gaps, such as the Fe-Ni-Cu-S matte, FeO-Fe2O3-SiO2, FeO-MgO-SiO2 slags, etc. In this paper, an approach to model coupled problems involving multiphysics and solution thermodynamic is presented. The approach consists in developing in-house a library containing the Gibbs energy minimization routines and using the local equilibrium concept for process modelling from a multiphysics commercial software (COMSOL). Simple test cases, such as building a non-ideal binary phase diagram on a CFD package is presented, the limitations and of other classic approaches such as equilibrium or Scheil cooling are discussed and compared to this model.

"The Linatex Dewatering System is a compact, low capital and maintenance cost matched set of processing equipment suitable for solids recovery, dewatering and desliming sand-like materials in the range 3/8"" to 325 mesh ( 1). Since its introduction to North America in the early 1970s, various elements of the system have been successfully installed in a variety of applic11tions both in Canada and the U.S.A. Examples are chosen from the coal, fine aggregates, iron ore and industrial minerals industries.II. Elements of the Linatex Solids Recovery System(A) The Linatex Separator (See Fig.I)The Linatex Separator, which is the heart of the system, is a specialized type of hydrocyclone designed to give a self regulating rope discharge product. It has the familiar cyclone geometry of cylindrical and conical section, tangential inlet, apex and vortex finder. The apex is enclosed in a unique patented automatic underflow regulator consisting of a collapsible rubber sleeve, and the overflow line is a siphon-leg, with a controlled air bleed valve. The siphon leg is adjusted so as to balance the internal negative pressure acting as a closing force on the underflow regulator against the mass of slurry pressing down on it from the cone section of the Separator. With correct adjustment the underflow regulator will close drip-tight on a water only feed. As solids accumulate in the apex of the cone the weight of solids counterbalances the vacuum and cat1ses the underflow regulator to open and discharge classified material at a controlled density."

Preliminary results of an experiment in seismic holography indicate that the techniques of acoustical holography may be successfully used with seismic waves to determine the size and general shape of underground objects. This experiment was carried out under field conditions on a moderately large scale compared with the typical laboratory experiments in acoustical holography. The object to be mapped was a 100-foot-diameter, spherical, low-velocity zone of explosively fractured rock in oil shale at an average depth of 80 feet. The seismic wavelength of the Fourier component wave used in making the seismic holograms was 50 feet at a frequency of 140 cps. The hologram sampling aperture was 226 feet square and was sampled by 441 geophones in a 21 by 21 rectangular array. One novel aspect of the experiment was the use of a wide-band polychromatic explosive source of seismic waves rather than a narrow-band quasi-monochromatic vibrator source. A successful laser reconstruction of the object image from a lensless Fourier-transform hologram in the form of a 5/l6-inch-square photographic transparency is illustrated. The size of the underground object measured from the laser reconstruction of the object and the size inferred from a knowledge of the amount of explosives used to fracture the site and the tensile strength of the oil shale are found to agree.

The evaluation of the effectiveness of the time domain Coal Interface Detector developed by the General Electric Company under contract H0155120 is the subject of this report. The sensor utilizes differences in the time characteristics of shearer vibrations as sensed by an accelerometer mounted on the ranging arm to discriminate the cutting of coal and rock. Pour identical time domain sensors were supplied by the Bureau for field evaluation. The performance of the time domain sensor was evaluated by an extensive field test and data collection program that included four longwall mines and a total of nine mine visits. The intent was to determine the sensor's applicability to a wide range of mining conditions and to document its limitations. Results of the extensive field tests indicate that shearer vibration data processed by GE's time domain signal processing algorithm cannot be used to reliably detect when the cutting drum crossed the coal/rock interface.

After forty years of exploration and development, the heavy mineral sand deposits of the Murray Basin are on the eve of substantial exploitation by Iluka Resources Limited, Southern Titanium NL and RZM/Cable/Bemax, whom plan to initiate mining and processing operations in 2005. A trial mining and processing operation was undertaken on the Wemen North strandline deposit in 2001-2003 by Murray Basin Titanium, a joint venture of Sons of Gwalia and RZM/Cable, which brought to light a number of mining and processing problems which have since been the subject of extensive studies and process development work. The mineralogy of these weathered strandline deposits is complex by industry standards due to the variety of the heavy minerals present, coatings on the mineral grains and the extensive weathering and alteration which has taken place during the past 50 million years. This paper provides an overview of the complex mineralogy that, in turn, dictates the processes that can be used to recover the valuable heavy minerals. The Murray Basin encompasses some 300,000 km2 and has been a depositional basin, often land locked, since the start of the Cenezoic Era. The economic heavy minerals include ilmenite, altered ilmenite, leucoxene of highly variable composition, rutile, and zircon. There are also other heavy minerals present such as cassiterite, chromite, and monazite in quantities that pose both problems and opportunities. The clay content and overburden thickness also play a major role in the selection of the deposits to be mined. Project Services Consultants (PSC) has undertaken the preparation of this paper as part of its ongoing participation in the mineral sands industry and in particular the project development activities in the Murray Basin region currently being undertaken by Iluka Resources. PSC has been involved with the mineral sands business for several years with senior staff having in excess of 30 years global industry experience. Coal research and related activities in 1964 by the Bureau of Mines resulted in many advances in the production, preparation, and utilization of this valuable natural resource. Mining research during the year was marked by work on hydraulic mining, coalbed degasification, mine drainage control, mine sealing, strip-mine rehabilitation, and quenching of mine-refuse fires. Bureau research continued to produce information leading to increased safety in underground mining. Such research included roof and rib control via bolting and bonding, pressure monitoring of coal and mine rock during mining operations, and development of safety devices for detecting conditions leading to roof falls. Other safety work was continued on methane detectors, coal-dust suppression, and mine ventilation equipment and techniques. Mine explosion and explosives research, mine equipment and materials, safety rule modernization, and safety education and training of mine workmen were continued. Coal storage and preparation work in 1964 ranged from freezeproofing of lignite for rail shipment, through washability studies of coals and washing equipment, to research on new ways to remove ash and sulfur from coal. Electric power production, which accounts for a major portion of the market for coal, received further study. Unique power generation systems, including coal-burning gas turbine and megnetohydrodynamic generators, were intensively investigated. Conventional power systems were improved through continuation of work on furnace performance, powerplant stack gas purification, and engineering and boiler water service.

In late 1994, EPA and OSM acknowledged that efforts by any one agency or by the many different agencies to remedy the water quality impacts of decades of contamination from abandoned coal mine lands in Appalachia would not be successful if their disjointed efforts were not unified and if the local watershed organizations were not included. The result of the collaboration between EPA and OSM was the creation of a statement of mutual intent which was a pledge by government agencies, watershed organizations, and the industry to restore watersheds degraded by acid mine drainage from abandoned coal. The presenter will describe the evolution of this pledge from a paper promise to on-the-ground remediation projects.

"A four-inch compound water cyclone (CWC) was tested to evaluate its gold recovery characteristics when processing -4.8 mm run-or-pit, placer material. Neutron activated placer gold particles (840 to 37 microns) were used as radiotracers (/98Au) in a closed circuit ewe test loop to determine concentrator recovery; a procedure believed unique to this study. The effect on gold recovery of gold size and shape, feed pulp density, feed pressure, vortex finder clearance (VFC), ewe cone type, top-size of the feed solids, presence or absence of heavy minerals in the feed, and the quantity of-37 micron slimes in the feed was investigated in over 300 tests.CWC concentration ratio and the top-size of the underflow solids were both affected by cone type, VFC, and feed pressure. Gold recovery was significantly affected by gold size, gold shape, and concentration ratio. These effects are complex, because significant size-concentration ratio and size-shape interactions exist. Radiotracer techniques showed gold particles had a residence time within the ewe of approximately one second. This study suggests ewe gold recovery is a concentration. This work suggests ewe gold recovery is a function of particle size and shape, and the flow rate through the cyclone. CWC cone ""bed density"" is considered important only as a thin, protective layer, which shields coarser gold particles from the entraining currents and facilitates their movement through the CWC.IntroductionCompound water cyclones (CWC), or automedium cyclones, are enhanced gravity concentrators for the beneficiation for slurries of sand, coal, and ground ore (Fig. 1). They are called compound water cyclones because of the compound slopes of their basal cones (Fig. 2) and are operated to suppress classification phenomena in favour of gravity concentration effects. The compound water cyclone is not a new wet concentrator. It was developed in the late 1950s by Dr. Jan Visman through research sponsored by Canada's Department of Energy, Mines, and Resources. Since that time, it has become a common unit in coal washeries for cleaning fine coal. CWCs and other versions of concentrating cyclones have also shown promise for heavy minerals and precious metals recovery."

[In report of Investigations 3452,5/ baling with roof movement in the Crucible mine, reference was made do to the fact tart timber decay was being studied at the time of writing. This roper, written after completion of that study, describes s the work and summarizes the data obtained. When the study of roof movement as begun at Crucible two ideas were advanced on decay Of timber by some of the officials: (1) That timber decay vas unusually rapid in the Crucible mine, and (2) that timber coated with rock dust decayed more rapidly than those teat were not so coated. There yore no records by which these ideas could be tested, and it appeared wise to make a limited; investigation particularly of the effect of rock dusting on decay, as rock dusting is an important means of preventing coal-dust explosions.]

Responsible mining requires stakeholder engagement throughout all operational stages and after mine closure. By assessing the current and anticipated future socio-economic and environmental impacts, a company can maximise the positive impacts they can have on a community, whilst minimising any negative impacts. Despite the current emphasis on companies maintaining effective stakeholder relations to gain their ‘social license’ to operate, findings of the present study reveal a wide variation in community expectations, with different degrees of ‘acceptability’ evident across seven sites in Romania (Rosia Montana), Sweden (Kristineberg), the United Kingdom (Cornwall), Bosnia Herzegovina (Vihovici) and Russia (Karabash, Gay and Mednogorsk). These variations reflect the current status of mining within a community, as well as its socio-economic background and the nature of existing engagement with mining companies already operating in the region.

The production of lightweight aggregates in Oregon is a new industry, and, like all new enterprises, it is suffering from growing pains characterized by numerous, small operations some of which flourish for a short time and then cease altogether. Normally all industrial mineral products are produced in a highly competitive atmosphere. At the present time this condition does not exist to a very marked degree in the state because as yet producers have not saturated the constantly expanding market. This paper has been prepared with the intention of outlining very briefly the current status of the various products now being used as lightweight aggregates in Oregon. The present picture will surely change, perhaps quite radically within even a short space of time.
