Palabora Mining Company operates a low grade underground copper mine situated in the Limpopo Province, South Africa. Full production was first reached in May 2005 after a successful transition from an open pit operation to an underground block cave operation. The operation faces a number of technical and operational challenges, not the least being fragmentation of a competent rock mass and external dilution. The cave is subdivided into three main sectors being the east, the west and the central sectors. Caving was initiated from the weaker central sector, which has the majority of its drawpoints located directly under the open pit bottom currently filled with about 130 million tons of waste material from the pit wall failure incurred in 2004. About 48% of the ore reserve has to be extracted from the western sector, which has a much courser fragmentation compared to the other two sectors and only 25% from the central sector with the finest fragmentation. The main constraint during the ramp-up stage has been secondary breaking of drawpoint blockages. Ground-breaking secondary breaking and cave management initiatives and practices have made it possible for Palabora to realize and sustain high production rates.

The Bureau of Mines, as part of a program to improve mine planning and development, is currently investigating the effects of pillar load transfer, which can impact mining operations wi.thin a multiple-seam configuration. At two mine sites where such ground interactions were present, the Bureau performed a complete geological analysis and installed and monitored instrumentation to gather pertinent data on rock mechanics. Overburden depth varied dramatically in the vicinity of the study area and reached a maximum at the study site; innerburden thick-ness was less than a pillar width (40 to 4S ft); heaving was experienced in both mines where sandstone and/or shale floor units were observed; overlays of the mine layouts show pillars were not totally superpositioned; a maximum of S in of roof to floor convergence was measured; and pressure readings indicated pillar core loading only and increased to a maximum of 7,000 psig over instrument setting pressure.

However, as more extra-thick coal seams are mined, it becomes more and more difficult to make the top coal fully broken up, resulting in more and more top coals flowing into the gob, rather than onto the rear AFC at the working face as designed. This research is aimed to investigate the failure mechanisms of the extra-thick top coal caving mining method.

Plain and alloyed titanium aluminides of composition Ti-47.5 at.% Al were prepared by melting commercial-purity titanium and aluminium with additions of 1 at.% precious metal. The as-cast alloys were subjected to potentiodynamic scans in 5, 15, and 25 wt% HCl aqueous solutions at room temperature and compared for their abilities to spontaneously passivate. Addition of precious metals resulted in a general improvement of corrosion resistance by increasing the open circuit potential to more noble values. Addition of 1 at.% gold or silver to titanium aluminide did not significantly increase the corrosion potential (Ecorr) above that of the plain titanium aluminide alloy, indicating that gold and silver are not sufficient cathodic modifiers to improve the corrosion resistance of titanium aluminide in all the solutions tested. However, platinum, palladium, and iridium additions shifted the corrosion potentials to the position of the passive region of plain TiAl for all solution concentrations. This indicated that TiAl alloyed with these platinum group metals would passivate spontaneously by cathodic modification. TiAl alloyed with palladium performed the best in 5 wt% HCl solution with the most positive corrosion potential. In 15 wt% HCl solution, alloys with platinum exhibited the most positive corrosion potentials, while alloying with iridium or palladium revealed more negative corrosion potentials. Thus, palladium alloying led to the best cathodic modification of titanium aluminide in low-concentration HCl solution, whereas platinum and iridium alloying additions resulted in the best cathodic modification of titanium aluminide in high-concentration HCl solutions.

MAGNESIA refractories and magnesium metal are both essential war commodities. The need for magnesium, which had just made its debut as a commercial metal a few years before the outbreak of the present war, is widely known because this new and valuable light metal has already received much publicity. Less widely known but equally important in the war effort are magnesia refractories. They are indispensable to the efficient functioning of the great metallurgical plants producing steel, nickel, copper, and other metals, where, because of their resistance to extreme high temperature and chemical attack, they are used in lining the furnaces, which are operated at a white heat. The demand for refractories in the metallurgical industries rose rapidly upon the outbreak of war, and now, in consequence of the continued great expansion under way in the manufacture of steel, nickel, copper, and other metals, the need for magnesia is greater than ever. Since 1915, part of the Canadian requirements of basic refractories has been supplied from the deposits of magnesitic dolomite in Argenteuil county, Quebec. The products from these deposits are excellent for many uses, but the magnesitic dolomite has too high a content of silica and lime to be used in making a type of magnesia brick required in nickel converters, and in the roofs of reverberatory furnaces used in the copper and steel industries. There is now a large and growing demand in Canada for bricks and shapes for these uses. This demand has always been supplied from the United States. Makers of these products in the United States, in turn, formerly imported most of the necessary high-grade, dead-burned magnesia from Austria and Manchuria. Not only are these sources closed, but refractory chrome ore from the Philippines is no longer available and chrome refractories may have to be in large part replaced by magnesia.

Few factors have had more influence in maintaining the strength and stability of the United States than our persistent habit of providing .checks and balances to the dynamic powers of free enterprise on the one hand and to the controls and guidance exercised by the State on the other. .Indeed, it is this same concern for matching forces against each other that has given our republic its ability -to preserve a democratic basis of life for its citizens, and yet maintain a ,government that is able to protect the rights of all and to resist and minimize the danger of excessive concentration of authority. Our current efforts to clarify the nation's mineral policies and to define more clearly the role that the governmental agencies should play in conjunction with the functions of private -enterprise again reveal the desirability and advantages of maintaining our traditional controls. At times, the equilibrium has been temporarily disturbed by too great enthusiasm for one or the other of these basic concepts. Sooner or later, however, the balance has been restored by the healthy opposition that is always created by excesses of one sort. At the current stage in our history, the swing toward undue enlargement of the powers of the State seems to have gone dangerously far and we would be untrue 'to our traditional behavior if the group that must demonstrate the virtues of free enterprise did not rally to its support with the utmost earnestness.

The effect of microwave radiation on the processing of Palabora open pit ore has been investigated. Significant reductions in Bond work index are demonstrated for microwave treated samples. Reductions in work index were found to be sensitive to applied power level and method of application. After single stage magnetic separation tests, improvements in recovery of FeO were noted. However, these were curtailed by oxidation of the magnetite species as a result of continued heating. The effects of microwave radiation upon the recovery of copper after froth flotation were also quantified. Small initial increases in recovery of copper were note dafter microwave treatment. However, with prolonged exposure, recovery was found to decrease. Overall recovery of copper was not affected except for samples treated for extended duration. The influence of microwave treatment upon the conventional Palabora grinding circuit has been quantified with the use of USIMPAC software. This paper describes measurements of current and voltage done on submerged arc furnaces. The aim is to focus on and attempt to separate from one another the electric arc current and the current bypassing the arc through the charge. Toward this goal two measurement campaigns on AC-arcs burning on coke beds are ac-counted for. The first was done on a 150 kVA pilot furnace at SINTEF in Trondheim Norway, and the second one was done on a 48 MVA industrial furnace run by Icelandic Alloys in Iceland. The measurements were compared to simulations employing an advanced MFD arc model. The main results are that a coke bed does not necessarily behave as a linear conductor. However the warmer chemically transformed part of an operating Si-metal or FeSi furnace probably exhibits linear behaviour and passes a considerable fraction of the phase current, perhaps on some operating conditions, as much as 50%.

INTRODUCTION The Norad Expansion Project was located 10 miles southwest of Colorado Springs, Colorado, within Cheyenne Mountain. The expansion areas to be excavated would be adjacent to the existing underground Norad complex, which would remain in operation during the work on the expansion. The original complex had been constructed approximately eight years earlier and had been in full operation for approximately five years. Phase I, Excavation was awarded the Tiro Construction Corporation, a subsidiary of Harrison Western Corporation, Denver, Colorado, in the fall of 1970. Notice to Proceed was given to Tiro on 28 December 1970. The project owner was the U. S. Air Force, design was performed by the U. S. Corps of Engineers, Omaha District, who would also serve as the construction agency. [ ]

Rietspruit Opencast Services was one of the first opencast coal mines to successfully employ cast blasting to aid in the burden removal operation. Initial work on cast blasting began at the mine in 1980 and has developed to a stage where approximately 26% of the total burden material is cast to a point where handling by draglines is no longer required.

"Stirred mill technology dates back to 1928 where the idea to use “an agitator and spherical grinding media” was presented. The year 1948 saw the successful application of DuPont’s “sand mill” for pigment grinding. Subsequent years have led to the development of different types of stirred mills spanning a number of industries that require fine and ultrafine grinding. In the context of the mining industry, smaller grain size and other mineralogical characteristics have motivated the need to grind finer. In order to address this need, the interest in stirred milling technologies has grown over the last 20 years as can be illustrated by the large body of literature published over this same period of time. The typical observation reported in the literature is that in certain circumstances stirred milling is significantly more efficient than ball milling. Despite these developments, the tumbling mills are continuing to be used in fine and ultrafine grinding applications. The main reason for this, as communicated at the Canadian Mineral Processors roundtable discussion in 2013, is that the comfort level in understanding stirred milling technologies is not at the level of that of tumbling mills. The aim of this paper is to contribute to increasing the general comfort level with stirred milling technologies by developing a better understanding of how power and energy is affected by stirred mill impellor design and mill operation. This will be accomplished by first completing an overview of the power models found in the literature followed by a general description of DEM and CFD stirred mill models as well as the insights that can be drawn from them. Finally, a generic stirred mill power model will be presented and applied to different stirred mill types in order to develop some insights into the differences between different mill types. The paper will close with a discussion on some of the challenges that these models have and how future research might contribute to overcoming them."

A new technique was used to obtain detailed sonic logging data in drill holes above the water table at a coal mine site in northeastern New Mexico. The equipment was developed under contract to the Bureau of Mines and the U.S. Department of Energy to indirectly evaluate the in situ structural properties of coal and overburden. The system comprises a hydraulically operated, wall-clamping downhole probe compatible with standard four-conductor logging cable, and a surface control module. Resolution of layering is 0.6 meter (2.0 ft), and a redundancy of data from separate receivers provides accurate timing measurements. Preliminary results in the settled overburden of an excavated long-wall panel indicated a low average velocity zone, extending approximately 18 meters (60 ft) into the immediate roof of the coal seam. Subsequent measurements improved the field and recording procedures to produce high quality waveforms from which both P and S arrivals may be visually interpreted. Over a representative section of interbedded sandstone, siltstone, shale, and coal, Vp and Vs varied considerably even within lithologic units. Compressional wave velocity in the coal seam, Vp = 1,740 m/sec (5,700 ft/sec), was in the range of variability of published data.

J BERESFORD introduced the subject of the paper which is the use of polymeric slurries to support the sides of diaphragm wall and bored pile excavations during construction. In the opinion of the authors the use of a suitable polymeric fluid offers financial and technical advantages compared with traditional bentonite based slurries. Under quiescent conditions a support slurry must have the following properties. - sufficient viscosity to support the sides of the excavation, to prevent infiltration into soils and to hold loose soil particles in suspension. - when agitated it should thin quickly to assist pumping transfer and cleaning and allow free passage of the grab or drill. - viscosity should be low enough during concreting to facilitate placement but high enough to prevent contamination of the concrete.

"SRI International has developed and patented* a castable dilute explosive tile @ET) that offersunique advantages over conventional high explosive. The primary advantages of DET are that itsdetonation pressure can be adjusted over a wick range and its impulse can be controlled independently by adjusting its thickness and configuration. Because DET has a much lower detonation velocity than conventional explosives, the pulse duration produced by DET is as much as 10 times longer than the pulse duration produced by conventional explosives for equal explosive weights. These features of DET present several advantages to the mining industry. For example, DET can be tailored so as to control fragment size and distribution to enhance extraction of desired elements from ore or breakup of specific regions."

Recent antipollution legislation for the control of mine tailings and waste-water has required an increasing number of tailings ponds. Many of these new waste-retention ponds are being constructed in congested locations, or the older ponds have reached such a size that--if failure occurs--they pose a threat to human life and public property. Although the typical tailings-disposal embankment represents--to the casual-, observer or the economy-minded mine official--a rather ugly but benign and stable pile of waste, they are in fact an extremely sensitive structural mass, retained behind the frailest of dikes. Failure of the waste mass requires only a minor change in water retention or weather conditions, erosion or piping of the ground strata, shifts in load or slight earth tremors. When failures occur, the results can be disastrous. In the U.S., we have been fortunate that, so far, pond failures have not caused loss of life. Thus, failures in this country have attracted little public attention. Present tailings-pond construction methods used by the mining industry require the barest money investment, and little engineering effort. Unfortunately, this superficial approach may increase short-term profits, but the practice may be conducive to the construction of needlessly weak structures. In coming years many of these designs will probaly become corporate liabilities. A typical pond is portrayed in Figure IA. This particular pond in Arizona is 1 mile long and 3/4 mile wide. Illustrated in Figure lB is a representative pond in cross section. During the past six or seven years extensive research has been performed on ore samples procured at the Bruns1,vick Tin Mines which is located in the south-west corner of New Brunswi.ck. This property was originally staked by Mount Pleasant Mines and they did considerable metallurgical and geological work on a small copper, zinc and tin deposit. In 1969, the property was obtained by the Sullivan Mining Group and after much geological and diamond drilling work, an entirely separate ore body \Vas located two miles south of the previous workings. The major economic metals in this ore zone are tungsten, bismuth and molybdenite, but many other metals exist as well. As the ore contains a host of different mineral species, it can be seen that considerable time WRS required to develop a practical flow sheet.

Kinetic Study on the Leaching of Vanadium from LD Converter Slag Using Sulfuric Acid In order to reduce the environmental impact due to land disposal of LD (Linz-Donawitz) converter slag from steelmaking plant and to valorise this waste material, an acid leaching study was carried out to assess the effect of several parameters on the kinetics of vanadium dissolution. The characterisation and morphology of the feed investigated using XRD, XRF. The factors influencing leaching vanadium such as particle size, temperature, slurry density and the concentration of sulfuric acid were investigated and optimised. The maximum vanadium recovery about 95 per cent achieved at 70¦C, S/L: 1/15, acid concentration: 3M and for 150 minutes of leaching time. The dissolution of vanadium in sulfuric acid shows that there are two stages in the kinetics of leaching. At the first 15 minutes, there is a sharp increase in the amount of vanadium extracted and at longer leaching time, the extraction increase slightly. In the present work, the shrinking core model (SCM) was used to describe the acid leaching of vanadium compounds. A summary of the controlling regimes in the SCM are examined below for short time (less than 12 min.) and long time (more than 30 min.) stages. So, it was found that the kinetics of leaching in both stages is controlled by solid product diffusion regime.

This paper is one of a series covering mineral resources of the Nation . It describes briefly most of the known manganese deposits of eastern Arizona , which for the purpose of this report includes the counties of Navajo , Apache , Gila, Graham, Greenlee , Pinal , Pima , Santa Cruz , and Cochise . With few exceptions , these descriptions are the result of field examinations by the writers . Work on this paper was begun in May 1956 , and in the following 18 months 151 deposits were examined . The distribution of the deposits by counties is as follows : 1 in Navajo , and 1 in Apache , 37 in Gila , 4 in Graham, 13 in Greenlee , 25 in Pinal , 13 in Pima , 12 in Santa Cruz , and 45 in Cochise . In surveyed areas the locations of the deposits are described by section , township , and range and in unsurveyed areas , by approximate projections of these subdivisions . The township and range numbers refer to the Gila and Salt River base and meridian . The history, production, ownership , geologic setting , and mining methods used are discussed for most of the deposits that were visited . Probably , some occurrences have been overlooked , but all of the principal ones have been examined . Ore dressing studies were made of typical ores from several of the larger districts . The work was performed in the laboratory of the Bureau of Mines Tucson Metallurgy Research Laboratory . The results of these studies are given with the descriptions of the deposits from which the samples were taken .
