It is necessary to understand this technology in order to recognize how it can best be utilized to give the greatest value for the application. And, once the decision to buy transmitters has been made, it becomes a question of whose SMART transmitter to buy. For, although the under-lying technology is similar, the differences that exist in how the technology has been implemented can make a dramatic difference in the end result. What prudent users of SMART technology do is to analyze their needs by application before making their buying decision.

The art of treating ores by the chloride volatilization process is still in the experimental stage. The process has not been sufficiently developed along metallurgical lines to warrant a definite statement as to the exact place it will occupy in the industry. The basic theory of the process has received the attention of prominent metallurgists for 20 years, and considerable research and experimental work have been carried on. Much of the experimental work done has never been published; if the accumulated results were made known, they would greatly aid,. the further development of the process. This bulletin aim~ to bring the salient features of the process to the attention of metallurgists for the purpose of furnishing information to and receiving comments from interested parties with the ultimate hope that the process will be a commercial success. If commercially utilized, the process will fill a long-felt want in metallurgy, especially in the treatment of oxidized and semioxidized or" carbonate" ores of copper, lead, and silver. Such ores are difficult to treat by gravity concentration or by flotation: in the former their tendency to slime upon crushing and their being of lower specific gravity than the sulphide minerals cause serious losses; in the latter much has been done in sulphidizing oxidized ores and subsequently recovering the artificial sulphides by flotation. Difficulties in proper sulphidizing and the low recoveries obtained have not balanced the cost of the treatment in many plants and in very few has it proved successful. Evidently there is a big void to fill in the treatment of these ores. No radical changes in present methods are forecast, but it is obvious that chloride volatilization can have a distinct place as a method of treatment for ores that are not readily amenable to present methods. In many plants it might replace concentration methods, especially where part of the mineral content in the ores exists in forms other than sulphides.

"Due to the increase of automotive vehicles, available parking spaces become a new type of limited resource in central cities of China, especially in those old districts without visionary urban planning. Additional mechanical parking in underground space is an efficient solution to provide parking spaces under the situation where the urban space is constrained. Shichahai district is an old protected zone in Beijing which is close to the Forbidden City and there are many Hutong (alleyway) and Quadrangles (courtyard house). No spaces are available for car parking on the ground and all vehicles are parking in Hutong without order currently. The local government plan to do renovation work for this district and improve the residential environment. Several innovative solutions are studied including parking in deep shafts, parking under existing buildings by under-pinned method, parking under buildings by covered excavation method, parking under roads built together with utility tunnel etc. 5000 difference types underground parking spaces are planned to be constructed in the following three years. Project examples are also introduced in this paper. INTRODUCTIONCar parking resources are very limited in central cities, especially in old districts without planning for increasing automotive vehicle volume. Traffic get worse when cars park on the side of the roads or move slowly to find parking spaces. Investigation shows the normal (parking space/ automotive vehicle volume) ratio is about 1.2 in most big cities such as New York, Tokyo and Hong Kong, while this ratio is only 0.5 in Beijing. One solution is to move cars out of central cities. But there are still huge parking requirements for the citizens living in central cities. Shichahai district is an historic protected zone in Beijing which is close to the Forbidden City and there are many Hutong and Quadrangles (refer to Figure 1 for project location). No spaces are available for car parking on ground and all vehicles are parked in Hutong without order currently. "Gold is present in different forms and associations in different ores. Flotation is used to recover gold and minerals associated with gold, but the applicability and type of flotation vary. The purpose of flotation in a gold recovery plant is largely dependent on the mineralogical association of the gold, and environmental and economic considerations. In this paper, the role of flotation in the recovery of gold is reviewed. The paper will describe examples of gold recovery by flotation including flotation of native gold, gold associated with sulphides including specifically copper sulphides, gold associated with tellurides, gold ores containing carbonaceous material and gold contained in tailings.INTRODUCTIONFlotation is widely used in the recovery of gold. However, the objectives and the mode of application are quite variable dependent on the type of ore, the gold association(s), other metal values, marketing considerations and environmental requirements. In this paper, a range of different applications of flotation incorporated in the recovery of gold are discussed. The reasons for each particular application are outlined and metallurgical results are presented.The mineralogy of the ore and the gold associations are fundamental influences on gold recovery. The use of flotation to concentrate gold is dictated by the mineralogy of the ore and gold. The fundamental factors are mineral/gold size, liberation size, association of the gold and type of gangue minerals or other valuable minerals. Gold can exhibit a range of sizes in a host from relatively large size (+50 µ) to refractory size (1 µ and sub-micron size). Similarly, the gold can occur in a number of phases in the same host. For example, the gold was present as petzite (AgAu telluride), calaverite (AuTe2) and native gold in a gold telluride ore and each of these minerals was associated with the pyrite host.Understanding the gold mineralogy and association is important in establishing the correct process route. The gold mineralogy is established by good mineralogy, use of diagnostic tools such as diagnostic leaching and assay by size fraction analyses and basic metallurgical testwork."

The Chambers Creek Interceptor Sewer Tunnel project consisted of 2-1/2 miles (4 kilometres) of nominal 9-foot (2.7-metre) O.D. tunnel driven through predominantly glacially overridden soils. Mole-Collucio Construction Company initially elected to drive the entire tunnel with a Lovat TBM. However, this machine could not control the fast raveling ground conditions which developed when the TBM encountered sands overlying very dense, hard glacial till or boulders. As a result, a shield and digger machine was brought in for a 1700-foot (518-metre) long segment. Pumped wells spaced roughly 50 to 125 feet (15 to 38 metres) apart were utilized to dewater about two-thirds of the alignment during construction. Initial support consisted of steel ribs and wood lagging, with a final lining comprised of pre-cast concrete pipe segments grouted in place.

To say that the treatment and handling of the "fines" is the most difficult phase of coal preparation is probably an understatement of facts. It is the fine sizes from about 1/16-inch to 0 that are mainly responsible for the inescapable sludge and slurry problems at plants using wet methods of preparation. Sludge and slurry are a problem from the standpoints of both cleaning and dewatering. They cannot be cleaned satisfactorily by "gravity" methods, which are used so extensively on coarser Sizes, due to the fact that fine sizes, particularly from 65-mesh to 0, do not follow the same laws of settling as do the coarser sizes. Although fine sizes are cleaned more successfully on wet-wash tables than in jigs, even tables as usually operated in coal-preparation plants fail on sizes below 100-mesh. As to other phases of the, sludge and slurry problem, wet coal preparation plants are almost universally beset with troubles in connection with the recovery and dewatering of the fine sizes from about 14-or 20-mesh to 0. The sizes finer than 100-mesh further complicate the problems in a wet preparation plant by their tendency to stay in suspension and build up a troublesome load of solids in the circulating water. In order to prevent too much trouble from this source, it is, customary at most plants to bleed a fair-sized stream out of the circulating system continuously and replace it by addition of fresh make-up water. The slurry water withdrawn from the circuit is usually run to waste, in which case it carries with it a considerable amount of fine coal, thus increasing the "washer loss." Another evil results from wasted slurry water in that quite often it finds its way into creeks and larger streams, creating stream-pollution problems.

Two processes for agglomerating fine sized ores with low temperature coke are described. One process (Orcarb) agglomerates ores with limited amounts of carbon; the other (ore-carbon pellets) pelletizes fine sized ores, using low temperature cokes as the binder. Data are presented on the products obtained when taconite, magnetite, and hematite concentrates and several titanium oxide ores were used. REDUCTION of finely divided oxide ores has long been a major metallurgical problem. Various methods of agglomerating, notably briquetting, sintering, nodulizing, and pelletizing, have been developed and are in industrial use. Carbon is the usual reducing agent for oxide ores and attempts have been made to agglomerate fine ores with coking coal in order to get the metallurgical advantages of intimate contact and increased particle sizes suitable for subsequent smelting or reduction.1-3 For the past three years, research has been in progress on two processes for combining fine sized ores with reactive carbon in the form of low temperature coke. By one process, designated Orcarb, the ore is coated with coke carbon in amounts limited to that required for reduction and the result is an appreciable but limited increase in product particle size over that of the original ore. The second process, called ore-carbon pellets, produces pellets of fine ore bound by low temperature coke. The first objective was to develop a process for combining an oxide ore with only enough carbon for its reduction, the amount being that derived from the simple reduction equations. The carbon (that amount theoretically required for the reduction of the oxides in an agglomerate with ore), calculated to CO, ranges from 10 pct for zinc calcines Or phosphate Ores to 21 pct for rutile and 26 pct for silica. The carbon required for reducing iron oxides falls between the extremes—10 and 26 pet' When the carbon in the agglomerate is low temperature coke, reduction by hydrogen may be expected to take place, thus modifying the calculated carbon require- ment. On the other hand, in practice, an excess of reducing agent over that required in theory is normally used. Screen sizes of three iron ores on which the greater part of the experimental work was performed are given in Table I. Most of the testing was done with Freeport (Renton Mine) coal, but Pittsburgh and Elkhorn bed coals were also used. The first objective was to agglomerate the ore with sufficient low temperature coke to provide carbon for reduction, i.e., in the range from 10 to 25 pct. This was accomplished by preheating the ore, mixing with pulverized coking coal, and completing the coal carbonization in a plain steel rotating retort. The pilot retort, as it is now constituted, is shown by diagram in Fig. 1 and photograph, Fig. 2. Ore is fed into the upper kiln by a screw; it is heated to 900° to 1100°F by direct flame and it is then discharged into an insulating hopper from which it goes

The optimal maintenance and control of the air flow and pressure distribution in a mine network are achieved by the correct positioning of the mine fans and regulators within the mine ventilation circuit. The principal considerations are the location of the main and underground fans or regulators and the attendant control of mine leakage. Air flow control is achieved by either passive or active regulation. Passive regulation adds resistance, usually in the form of a regulating door. Active regulation adds pressure sources in the form of underground booster fans. Ventilation engineers are increasingly turning to analytical tools to assist them in the design and operation of ventilation systems. Coal preparation plant simulators are used to study flowsheet alternatives and determine product quality and quantity that can be produced under various operating conditions for individual circuits. Some simulators also provide an estimate of the cost per ton of clean coal by determining the number and size of different processing units required for a specific raw coal tonnage and by computing both capital and operating costs for individual units. However, to the authors? knowledge, none of these simulators have the ability to optimize plant performance while satisfying multiple product quality constraints and selecting the most profitable flowsheet from many alternatives. A novel coal preparation plant simulator (SIU-Sim) that maximizes the overall plant yield using a robust optimization tool and selects the best plant cleaning circuit configuration based on maximum plant profitability is presented. The simulator also identifies the best operating conditions for individual circuits of a plant to satisfy multiple quality constraints for the overall clean coal product. It uses a genetic algorithms- (GA) based technique to maximize the overall plant yield for each cleaning flowsheet alternative and uses a net present value (NPV) analysis technique to maximize plant profitability for the entire life of a new plant or the remaining life of an existing plant. The step-by-step development of the simulator along with a case study demonstrating its specific features is presented.

With the burgeoning development of precious metals heap leach mining projects throughout the country regulatory agencies are beginning to take a closer look at the short-and long-term environmental consequences of heap leach mining. This increase in regulatory review is occurring on federal, state and local levels, and is affecting both large- and small-scale mining developments. Small-scale mining developments are receiving especially critical regulatory scrutiny because in the eyes of some regulatory agencies, small developers lack the credibility automatically accorded to major mining companies. This is due in part to a bad image of small miners based upon past environmental problems and permit violations caused by a few, small operators. The proponent of a small mining development thus faces special problems during the project permitting process, and must convince the regulatory authorities of his company's ability and commitment to plan, develop, and decommission a mining operation in compliance with environmental regulations. Not only must the small developer have a thorough understanding of the regulatory requirements affecting his project, he must also devote considerable effort to careful internal planning in order to produce a well organized approach to project permitting. The importance of proper planning cannot be overstated. Project planning is key to convincing the regulatory agencies that the small miner is capable of developing a viable project. More- over, the economics of a small mining project demand permit acquisition at modest cost and in a timely fashion. A well planned permitting effort will thus ensure that permits are received within budget and on schedule. This paper will review the federal, state, and local permitting requirements for heap leach projects, and the variability of these requirements from state to state. The environmental assessment process for projects developed on public lands, and the acquisition of zero- discharge water quality permits, air quality permits, and local special use permits as they apply to small mining developments will be discussed. The paper will conclude with a review of project decommissioning and cyanide neutralization requirements and their implications for small-scale heap leach projects.

The Taupo Volcanic Zone inNew Zealand and the Philippine Mobile Belt in the Philippines are characterized by active subduction, active volcanism and high seismicity. The main factors affecting characteristics of geothermal systems in both countries are: tectonic setting, source magmas, maturity of the systems, and depth to the degassing magma body. Within New Zealand, geothermal systems are grouped into arc- and rift-type. Fluids in arc-type systems contain high amounts of volatiles (<20%), with high CO2/Cl, CO2/He, and N2/Ar ratios. Mantle-type volatiles predominate in rift-type systems. Philippine geothermal systems are largely arc-type, the topography is rugged, leading to the separation of water and vapour upflows, as opposed to the overlap found in New Zealand. The relatively shallow depths of degassing magma bodies in the Philippines results in steeper geochemical gradients, leading to higher proportions of arc-type magmatic water (>40%) and higher Cl contents (3000 - 10 000 mg/kg), Maximum temperatures are also higher, reaching up to >400¦C. Arc-type alteration assemblages in New Zealand and the Philippines are similar. Because Philippine geothermal systems are less mature, have higher temperatures and steeper geochemical gradients than New Zealand ones, advanced argillization is more widespread occurring down to depths of 2000 m. Mineral phases are more varied due to the active input of magmatic waters and the formation of vapor conditions at depth, forming P04-, B-, Li-, Ce-, F-, and Cl-bearing minerals at high temperatures. In the Philippines, high temperature magmatic-hydrothermal to contact metamorphic assemblages containing biotite, amphiboles and pyroxenes are relatively common, but rare in New Zealand.

"As part of the Namew Lake project a mill was constructed to treat 1900 tpd of ore grading approximately 0.90% CU and 2.45% Ni to produce copper and nickel concentrates.Nickel occurs mainly as pentlandite and violarite while copper occurs as chalcopyrite. Two main ore types are present1 lower grade disseminated sulphides in a talcose ultramafic gangue and a higher grade solid sulfide with a granitic breccia matrix.Primary crushed ore from underground is treated on surface in a conventional closed circuit crushing plant using 2-stage cone crushing. Crushed ore is conveyed to storage and then fed at a controlled rate to a grinding circuit employing a rod and ball mill with hydrocyclone classification. Rougher flotation separates and cleans nickel and copper sulfides from waste materials followed by a high lime separation circuit to separate the minerals into final concentrates. Dewatering is achieved through use of high capacity thickeners and pressure filters prior to delivery to a loadout area. The crushing and milling control is highly automated.Plant design was based on metallurgical samples obtained from drill cores. After the first year of operations, plant results compared favourably with design projections.INTRODUCTIONThe Namew Lake Project is a joint venture partnership between Outokumpu Mines Ltd. (Canada) and Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company Ltd. (60%). The project included construction of a mine and milling complex to treat approximately 500,000 tonnes per year of copper-nickel ore grading o.91% and 2.44% Ni. Known reserves are estimated at 2. 65 million tonnes. The deposit is located approximately 65 km south of Flin Flon (120 km by road) and about 5 km east of the Manitoba-Saskatchewan border. The decision to construct a concentrating facility was made June 15, 1987 and construction started a week later. The facility, designed for 1900 tonne per day throughput, was ready for commissioning in September 1988. Outokumpu Engineering of Finland was chosen to prepare metallurgical flowsheets, select and develop plant layouts, and provide construction management. Kilborn (Toronto) contributed detailed engineering for civil, structural, mechanical and electrical components and outokumpu Equipment of Canada, the design, the supply, and commissioning of the instrumentation package. Hudson Bay undertook the initial metallurgical test work and preliminary design work."

"Powder injection for melt refining is widely practiced in the steel industry, and is gaining acceptance in the non-ferrous industries. In these commercially-important systems, the thermodynamics and kinetics may be very complicated. More than one element may be removed by refining, and often the refining agents are not just one compound. In this paper, the thermodynamic and kinetic aspects of these processes are reviewed. A number of examples are given, such as the desulphurization of iron with a variety of reagent mixtures, and selenium removal from copper with several different reagent combinations.IntroductionI am very pleased and honored to present a paper at this Symposium recognizing the many contributions of Professor Howard Womer. Even at the time I was an undergraduate student, the WORCRA process was part of the curriculum. I remember at the time that I was fascinated by the concept, and due to it and the many other rapid developments in Process Metallurgy, I chose it as my field of study. I think the Symposium is testimony that Professor Womer has touched the lives of many others as well.My original assignment was an overview of the basic aspects of gas and solids injection. However, I reviewed most of this material at the Savard/Lee Symposium [1]. In the present paper, I will present some of the basic issues related to refining with powder injection, using work that we have recently completed in both ferrous and non-ferrous systems."

Since the last occasion on which I spoke to you on this subject there has been a considerable increase in the mechanical ventilation of Western Australian mines.The following table compares the figures for 1939 with those of 1941. The type of fan most commonly used is the limit load fan. On account of its higher mechanical efficiency it has very largely superseded the multivane fan with forward curved blades.Two fans of the propeller type are in use and these have given very satisfactory service. This type of fan also has a high mechanical efficiency particularly at the correct duty for maximum efficiency.The maximum efficiencies obtainable from the various types are, for "multivane" 670/0, for "limit load" 75%, and' for aerovane 7810/0.References to propeller fans with variable pitch have appeared in the technical press, but no detailed d~scription has been issued. The advantages of these fans for mine ventilation are not obvious. An aeroplane is required to operate over a wide range of duties, while the speed of the motor for maximum efficiency is pl'actically constant. In such circumstances the propeller can be adapted to the particular work it has to do by varying the pitch of the blades. In a mine the speed of the fan can be varied to suit.the conditions, and it would appear that variable pitch is not necessary while there is a reasonable range of fans to choose from.The question of the correct position for the fan still comes in for considerable discussion. Exhausting fans at the surface have the support of time and custom, and in many cases this represents the only reasonable arrangement. Such fans should be fitted with an evase, especially in the case of fans with a high outlet velocity such as the aerovane types.It is claimed that there are advantages in having the fan at the surface where it is readily available for inspection and maintenance. Experience has shown that these advantages are more apparent than real. Fans will run for long periods with no attention other than occasional greasing and cleaning, and modern electric motors will run without attention for very long periods.In some instances the expense of a power cable to take current to the fan may be saved by placing it on the surface, but in the majority of cases...

The present knowledge on ground movements and mining damage is mainly based on observations made when mining seamlike deposits. The studies, rules, and regulations in different countries agree in that the differential ground movements, especially the strain, account for the damage to structures. Accordingly, large buildings are particularly susceptible. The opinions on what amount of ground deformation induces what degree of structural damage are not quite uniform. Mining damage can be reduced or prevented by structural and/or underground precautions. The latter comprise measures for generally reducing the ground movements (leaving pillars, filling, partial extraction) and for reducing temporary movements (rapid extraction, specially arranged workings). Because the differential movements decrease with increasing depth of mining, safety pillars are largely dispensable at greater depths. Shafts are mainly affected by the vertical derivatives of rock displacements, but extraction in the vicinity of shafts is feasible even under difficult conditions. The theoretical concept of the ground movement process established in part 1 of this work is in qualitative agreement with the facts herein observed. As a quantitative approach, it should be applied to calculating ground surface movements rather than rock movements about underground openings. It can be extended by introducing more detailed strata characteristics.

We encountered several areas of methodologic uncertainty during development of a data collection method for use with vibrating hand tools in metal assembly. A local manufacturer sought our assistance designing a data collection method for evaluating and predicting risks of upper extremity disorders associated with use of vibrating hand tools. Current methods of vibration measurement are described in ISO 5349 [2]. However, the complexity of measuring vibration along with other exposures such as force and posture has limited the number of workplace-based studies of upper extremity disorders that have included direct measurements of vibration. Data from this preliminary study was used to look at two issues: a comparison of vibration values between production and non-production workers when performing the same task, and a comparison of worker ratings of vibration comfort to direct measurement of tool vibration. Methods Eight experienced production workers used each of six metal fastening tools to install fasteners. Vibration was collected by 3 tri-axial accelerometers, one attached to the tool handle following ISO 5349 recommended locations, one attached to the hand dorsum on the 3rd knuckle and one to the thumb side of the wrist. Data sampling rate was 10,000 samples/second. Hand grip and feed forces were obtained using a Novel pressure sensing mat on the palm. Each trial consisted of installing 10 fasteners per tool for each of the 6 tools. The test set-up placed the wrist in the position typically used by the operator during production. Each worker documented subjective comfort and effort ratings on a seven point scale following each series of fastener installations. One series of testing was completed by three non-production workers inexperienced in fastener installation to simulate use of alternative employees for data gathering. Vibration data for each trial were acquired, digitized, and stored using Lab View. The X, Y, & Z axes were used to calculate the vector sum response for each tri-axial accelerometer. The tool data were digitally filtered following ISO recommendations. Calculated data consisted of the mean RMS over the tool’s on- time, the starting and breaking peak impulses, and the peak of the frequency response. Results Production workers (n=8) were right hand dominant males with a mean age of 55 years and normal hand strength (mean right grip = 106 lbs). Non-production workers (n=3) had similar characteristics. We found large and statistically meaningful differences in hand force during tool use between production and non-production workers (mean production workers = 9.77 lbs, mean non-production workers = 43.30 lbs, p = 0.0001). Vibration values obtained from the hand also showed a statistically meaningful difference (mean in production workers = 0.67 Gs, mean in non-production workers = 1.48Gs, p = 0.0014, figure 1). Experienced worker ratings of comfort during tool use demonstrated a moderate correlation with measured vibration (r=0.63). Worker ratings trended with direct recordings from the tool handle as shown in figure 2.

Since its discovery, Cuba has been called the “Pearl of the Antilles.” The country remains that, albeit a little tarnished these days. In Havana, many of the buildings are being refurbished, while some new ones are under construction. Since 1991, the laws have been relaxed so that Cuba is developing a mixed economy of central control with free market. Joint venture agreements have been signed with businesses from many countries. This does not include the United States due to its embargo. But even these regulations have been relaxed some.
