SUSTAINED growth characterized the U.S. economy in 1964. Many new peaks were achieved in production, sales, employment, employee earnings, and business profits. At the end of 1964, the economy had experienced 4 years of uninterrupted expansion, and the greatest net gains in output for all postwar cyclical advances had been registered. There were no indications of the various weaknesses which have previously characterized advanced stages of business expansion. Both gross national product (GNP) and national income were 6.7 percent higher than in 1963. In 1964 GNP totaled $628.7 billion, a gain of $39.2 billion over the 1963 figure. On an overall basis, prices rose 1.75 percent in 1964. The real volume of output of goods and services (GNP in constant dollars) increased by 5.0 percent ill 1964; this was more than the 3.8-percent gain in 1963 but less than the 6.6 percent gain in 1962. The 1964 output gain also exceeded the average 3.7 percent annual increase for the postwar period. Congress authorized a two-stage tax reduction designed to further stimulate economic growth and employment. The tax cut favorably affected the 1964 economy in the following ways: By helping to boost personal income, corporate profits, and industrial production; by accelerating the pace of consumer spending and business capital expansion; and by increasing employment, thereby reducing unemployment to 5 percent. PRINCIPLES OF MINE PLANNING During the initial planning stages, all mining operations are analyzed and evaluated in a similar fashion. This similarity holds true because the mine-planning procedure can be reduced to a network of interrelated systems that are tied together by a common philosophy of mine planning: namely, that the resource is to be extracted in a manner which is safe, efficient, and profitable. The success of the mining operation cannot be guaranteed unless each of these three requirements is met. Fig. 1 shows a flowchart for the initial planning of any mining operation. Notice that there is a preplanning stage that leads to the planning of four interrelated systems. The preplanning stage includes property exploration, estimation of production and manpower requirements, and the establishment of construction timetables. The four systems, evaluated after the pre-planning stage, are broken down into the following: (1) Excavation and handling system, (2) Strata control system, (3) Operating support system, and (4) Service support system. The Excavation and handling system includes the selection of all the equipment for the removal of the resource from its in-place deposit (e.g., draglines, continuous miners, rock drills, etc.) and for the transportation of the mined material from the face (e.g., belt conveyors, trucks, etc.). The Strata control system incorporates all those considerations which maintain the integrity of the roof, ribs, floor, and overburden both during and after the extraction phase; typical considerations in this area include pillar sizing, artificial support of the immediate roof in mine entries, and subsidence protection. The Operating support system contains the "necessary evils" of mine planning; the system consumes a large percentage of the mining engineer's planning time but does not contribute to the actual extraction of the resource. However, if proper attention is not paid to the various components of the system, such as ventilation, drainage, and power, then the mining operation will not perform to its capabilities. Finally, the Service support system is composed of those operations which keep the mine running efficiently; typical examples of these include maintenance and sup- ply. One important concept that Fig. 1 is designed to emphasize is that the four systems are interrelated; typically, a slight alteration of one can affect the performance of another. If these interrelationships are ignored, the effects on the system can be disastrous. The mine preplanning stage and the four subsequent system evaluations constitute the Analysis portion of the mine planning flowchart. After this portion of the study is completed, the overall projected operation can be evaluated by techniques such as financial analysis. This last step in the study is referred to as the Synthesis of the previously calculated parameters into an overall plan. Much has been written about the overall evaluation of mining properties, but, over the past thirty years, very little has been written about the analysis of mine- planning systems in a coordinated manner. Further, those texts which attempted this topic have failed to give sufficient examples for successful implementation, thus supporting the operating engineers' lament that it is easy to discuss theories but difficult to show applications. This text is intended to bridge this gap. Examples of the various stages of the analysis portion of the mine planning flowchart shown in Fig. 1 will be covered in this text, with the exception of the Service support system, since this system is oriented more toward day-to-day planning than long-term mine planning. INTERNATIONAL STANDARDIZATION The benefits that can be derived from an international standardization of the units used in mining engineering calculations are numerous. The interchange- ability of equipment parts and the ability to analyze and compare performance and design specifications on an equal basis are just two of the goals desired by both manufacturers and mine operators. Unfortunately, conversion to an international standard has not been rapidly achieved by engineers in the United States, due to their training under the English system. The Society of Mining Engineers of AIME has made the commitment for the adoption of the Systeme International d'Unites (SI) in all mining engineering calculations. Since many practicing mining engineers and students in undergraduate programs still find difficulty in relating to SI units, the calculations in this textbook will use the English system, with Table 1 available for conversion into SI units.

The technical literature on the general subject of crushing contains many references to the work of investigators on the laws governing, and the factors entering into, the economical production of fine materials. In fine grinding, whether for the purpose of producing fine material, or for the unlocking of minerals in an ore, close control of the screen sizes of primary-crusher products is of secondary consideration and accordingly has received very little attention. The growth and development of the nonmetallic industries, however, have drawn more attention to primary crushing. Many of these industries are interested in the production of relatively coarse products that meet certain definite size specifications, a condition entirely different from that existing in the field of ore dressing. Under such conditions, a knowledge of the factors governing the selection Paid operation of primary-crushing equipment is essential to the economical production of a satisfactory material.

At first sight, the extinction of a mine fire by the action of some such gas as carbon dioxide would appear to be quite a simple and practicable operation. From a consideration of the theoretical aspects only of the question, it becomes evident that the matter is not so simple as it appears to be at first sight. The fire at the Senghenydd Colliery occurred as the result of the disastrous explosion of October 14th, 1913. This explosion was confined to the west side of the colliery; and as a result the timbers in the main intake on this side were set on fire; but these were soon buried beneath falls, and the tire continued under them. Attempts were made to extinguish it with water, with the aid of chemical extinguishers, and by digging it out; hut these had to he abandoned, and ultimately the fire-zone was sealed off by “ bashings” (stoppings). By December, progress in the decrease of combustion was so slow that it was decided to try the effect of inert gas. Under the first phase of this contract as reported in the Phase I report it was determined that certain types of commercially available molded case breakers are capable of interrupting mine dc power supplies of nominally 300 volts or 600 volts rating. These circuit breakers incorporate conventional overcurrent trip units but also can be operated by means of low power signals fed to a shunt trip coil. Further development in the Phase I program produced a means whereby a discriminating circuit breaker detector unit could sense the presence of illegitimate loads on the dc electrical system and cause the circuit breaker to trip. The detector unit operated by detecting the presence of 3000 Hz currents which were generated in the illegitimate loads by means of a 12 volt, 3000 Hz signal applied to the dc system. Further development of the program has continued in Phase II with the aim of verifying the practicability of the complete discriminating circuit breaker concept and developing other types of equipments required to implement a system. These other equipments include electronic means for raising the apparent impedance of high power legitimate loads and static filters for smaller loads. The results of laboratory work and limited underground tests have been successful. This report describes the system and the tests that have been conducted on the various equipments that comprise the complete Discriminating Circuit Breaker Concept.

In this study, graphical and mathematical methods used to determine operating points in single or multiple fan ventilation systems are summarized. The problem is mathematically formulized for parallel connected fans in which analytical solutions are not possible. For n number of parallel connected fans, a non-linear equation system that consists of n number of non-linear equation sis derived. The Newton-Raphson method, which is a numerical analysis method, is adapted to solve this non-linear equation system and the solution steps are given as an algorithm. A computer program based on this algorithm is written and its applicability is proved.

A new warehouse built with prefabricated components over an area underlined by soft marine soil deposits started showing differential settlements well before its completion. Its 103 spread footings carrying up to 4,000kN (450t) axial loads had been cast on jet-grouted columns extending and penetrating a layer of sand at a depth of 10m (33ft). Investigations performed to assess the wholeness and consistency of the jet-grouted columns revealed a state of loose jet-grouted masses and uncontrolled, off target migrations of the jet-grouting. Most of the jet-grouting itself was settling. The following remedial solutions were suggested: 1. Construction of new and better controlled jet-grouted columns. 2. Cement-based soil grouting. 3. Expanding resin injections. 4. Minipiles drilled-through the existing footings and reaching into a denser layer of sand existing at 23m below grade. Remedial solution 1. was immediately discarded due to cost and the possibility of a repeating failure in this non-granular and highly compressible soil. Tests of remedial solutions 2. and 3. were carried out. The outcome of the grouting was monitored by Electro Resistivity Tomography (ERT) (Bares et al., 2003), an innovative 3D electro tomography procedure showing where grout had been actually placed and its migrations off target. A successful 4,000kN (450t) load tests confirmed the validity of the solution. Finally, upon the completion of a successful load test, solution 4. was chosen. It supplied the highest degree of reliability thanks to the ease of controlling the final and actual location of the minipiles and to the higher safety factor provided. All remedial work to install the minipiles was eventually performed inside the building. Additional load tests and settlement measurements confirmed the adequacy and success of the chosen solution.

Iron and steel scrap has accounted for 45 to 50 percent of the metallics used by the steel industry. In an electric furnace which utilizes a 100-percent cold charge consisting of about 99 percent scrap and 1 percent pig iron, sensible heat from molten pig iron is not present as it is when hot metal is charged to open hearths and converters. A study of means for more efficient utilization of iron and steel scrap in steelmaking indicated that the time and fuel requirements to melt scrap were important cost factors, particularly in arc-furnace steelmaking. A process to preheat scrap economically prior to charging into the arc furnace has been developed, utilizing efficiently the heat from combustion of fossil fuels as a substitute for electric-arc heating in the initial stage of arc-furnace steelmaking. Scrap is loaded into a portable vertical cylindrical furnace body that is open at the top and has a perforated dropout door at the bottom. In the heating operation, the furnace body containing scrap is placed upon a hollow base connected to a flue, and then the burner and combustion-chamber unit is lowered on top of the furnace body. The stream of hot-combustion products flows down through the bed of scrap imparting heat to it, and the cooled gases exhaust through the flue. After the heating operation the furnace body containing hot scrap is transported to the arc furnace for charging. Thus, the furnace body serves as a charging bucket for top-charged arc furnaces, enabling this preheating process to be integrated into existing material-handling patterns in many arc-furnace plants.

The phenomena of nature cannot present themselves to any thinking wild without claiming from it some solution. The earth, as it has often been observed, is laid out like a well ordered cabinet, presenting to us, in measure, some means of judging how the laws of nature and the essential properties of matter have worked out all we see before us. "That there have been depositions of strata gradually laid down aud stocked with the remains of the living objects, vegetable and animal, that flourished when they were being imposed, is an universally acknowledged fact. It speaks of a constantly maintained series of operations whereby the globe has been brought to its present condition, and which are ever advancing it to stages that are still before it. We witness the very graduated rate of the existing advances and can see that the past action must have been conducted in the same slow deliberate manner. There are many questions, however, upon which inquirers are not agreed, hence they are still within the domains of fair discussion.What has led to those great climatic changes whereby the same portions of the earth have had at various times climates that were glacial, temperate, and tropical? What causes the constant contortions and dislocations of strata and the upheaval and depression of land levels, and that there is a tendency to alternation in the parallel areas undergoing opposite kinds of movement as if the sinking of one area balanced the rIsing of another? What is the reason that the centres of volcanic action are continually shifting, and that the line of greatest activity is always upon the rising areas? That portions of the earth have been subjected to intense alid long continued volcanic action, and again to long periods of repose, and that the periods of activity and repose are·recurrent at long intervals of time? What the mountain chains of the world are in broadly parallel bands? What has caused the stratified rocks to be tilted from their original?

The ability to accurately model the movement of grade boundaries during a typical bench blast would be of significant benefit to mine operators. The movement of grade boundaries during the blasting process may have significant impact on grade recovery if not accounted for. The paper describes the preliminary stages of a research project which combines numerical blast models and conventional mine planning software to allow practical use of the results of a numerical blast simulation. A two dimensional bench blast is simulated using the Universal Distinct Element Code (UDEC). The results of the simulation are used to provide input to the Surpac mine planning package which can be used to generate grade control plans.

"The development of Galfan, a new generation 95% zinc-5% aluminum-mischmetal alloy coating for steel, offers opportunities for greater fabrication flexibility and upgraded corrosion performance in automotive applications. The formability of Galfan is equivalent to that of electrogalvanized steel, based on laboratory tests and automotive component fabrication. Corrosion resistance of Galfan exceeds that of hot dip and electrogalvanized, including performance in automotive industry tests. Automotive production applications for deep drawn and stamped components in France and Germany are based on the ability to meet dual performance requirements for upgraded formability and corrosion resistance. The first U.S. Galfan application was on 1985 model Ford cars and light trucks for transmission oil cooler lines which has now expanded into a number of power steering tubing uses. IntroductionContinuing requirements for improved vehicle performance coupled with the ever present need for reduced cost have spawned the development of a number of new coated steel products. Among this new generation of coated steels is Gaifan™, a 95070 zinc-Solo aluminum-mischmetal hot dip alloy coating. Galfan exhibits particular promise for automotive use based on broad fabrication advantages and upgraded product performance(I ),The unique characteristic of Galfan is the key combination of greatly improved formability with much longer corrosion life. Galfan provides significantly better formability than any other hot dip coating. Testing shows that formability is limited primarily by the steel substrate to which the Galfan coating is applied. Galfan exhibits excellent resistance to flaking and microcracking during commercial forming operations. The result is the elimination of unnoticed damage to the coating which would show up later as premature rusting on the finished product."

In 1992, a detailed inspection of the Southfield Sewer revealed a reach of approximately 0.8 kilometers in length, located directly below the freeway lanes, which was severely distressed. Failure of this section of the sewer would result in the closing of the busiest roadway in the state as well as the potential backup of sewage into homes and spilling into nearby surface waters. As such, repair of the distressed section required development of a procedure that would not jeopardize the conveyance of flow through the existing sewer nor impede travel on the overlying freeway. Based on these constraints, the DWSD and NTH team developed a repair concept that entailed the mining of a new, 3.05-meter (10-foot) diameter bypass away from the traffic lanes. The new bypass section was connected to the existing sewer, up stream and down stream of the distressed area, using a “top down” construction approach, that required only minimal freeway closures during weekend periods. This paper, prepared jointly by the Owner, Consultant and Contractor will describe existing conditions, design considerations and construction methods.

Trends in Test Filtration to Respond to Decreasing Sample Size There has been a steady decline in the quantity of samples available for testwork when developing new mining processes due to the maturing mining technology and the increasing costs of pilot testing. Larox, a supplier of filtration equipment and its co-operation partner Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT) have been actively developing new equipment, testing methodologies and tools to plan test campaigns with the objective of being able to determine the optimum filtration technology and the parameters for sizing full scale equipment with a minimum sample size. With smaller sample sizes, the test scale diminishes from pilot scale to bench scale, and the small equipment size has implications for scale-up. Redesigning the equipment to simulate full scale equipment rather than to match filtration theory has led to some interesting developments. Comparisons between bench scale equipment and production units help identify the limitations of bench scale testing. The nature of filtration is such that it is unreliable to estimate filterability theoretically, and different testing methodologies have been investigated to be able to test the feasibility of filtration from samples as small as few grams. While not optimising the filtration technology, these methodologies provide an adequate level of accuracy for scoping studies. Together with improvements in equipment, a software tool has been developed to reduce the number of tests necessary to optimise filtration technology and parameters for sizing.

Copper-Nickel ores in northeastern Minnesota could establish a new industry in a region where underground mining has not been active. This study reviews geotechnical data relevant to the selection and design of underground mines in this region and by numerical structural analysis evaluates the importance of some geotechnical parameters to mine method selection. Because of the rapid development of computer modeling many new techniques have become available for modeling rock mass behavior in recent years. An overview of these methods is presented and their applicability to mine design reviewed. Methods included in this summary were the differential continuum models, such as finite Pint and finite difference, integral continuum models, such as boundary element, displacement discontinuity and boundary integral equation methods, and discontinuum methods such as the distinct block model. The displacement discontinuity method was used to evaluate the influence of geotechnical parameters on some aspects of mine design. Three problems; room stability, pillar stability on a weak inclined contact and sill pillar thickness influence on sill pillar stability, were analyzed to evaluate the relative importance of insitu stress field and joint properties on design. It was concluded that for stability analysis the initial horizontal stress is of most importance in all aspects of design. The position, orientation, persistence and strength of joints is also of primary concern. In a more general sense, however, it was concluded that detailed geotechnical parameters have much less influence on mine method selection than more general factors such as rock quality, initial stress state, orebody shape and economics.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Huoqiu iron ore field in north-west Anhui province is located in the south-east margin of the North China Craton and hosts large iron resources. Orebodies are hosted in Neoarchean amphibolite facies metamorphic rocks, forming silicon-iron bands from north to south. The area is dominated by an Early Precambrian basement consisting of Neoarchean grey gneisses, amphibolites and metasediments. The gneisses are similar with assemblages of Trondhjemite-Tonalite-Granodiorite in compositions and intercalated with amphibolites. Igneous zircons from gneisses and amphibolites have U-Pb ages of 2.86 and 2.75 Ga respectively, which are interpreted as the crystallisation ages of their protolith. Zircons from amphibolite and gneiss have eHf(t) values of 2.4–15.5 and -3.0–1.5 respectively. The tDM2(Hf) model ages of the gneiss range from 2.87 to 3.14 Ga, which is consistent with tDM1(Hf) ages of amphibolite (2.84–3.16 Ga). The U-Pb-Hf isotopes thus confirm that the gneisses were generated by partial melting of amphibolite. Two granites produce two group Hf isotopic compositions. The older one (1916 ± 42 Ma) has eHf(t) values and tDM1(Hf) ages of -9.4–3.4 and 2.24–2.71 Ga respectively, whereas the younger one (1823 ± 41 Ma) shows a large variation in eHf(t) values of -18.1–12.5 and tDM1(Hf) model ages of 1.73–2.92 Ga. Geological and geochemical characteristics indicate that the Huoqiu banded iron formations are a Superior-type iron formation rather than an Algoma-type as previously considered.CITATION:Yang, X, Liu, L and Wang, B, 2015. The simplicity off Ø=0 analysis has been taken advantage of to evaluate the geotech­nical problems of open caissons, slurry trench walls and piles in Shanghai. Undrained shear strengths obtained by various testing methods are correlated with case record and experimental data. Some problems posed by the construction of tall buildings are briefly discussed. Comments on applications are made to help engineers deal with practical problems.

The epithermal gold-silver deposits wall poster is one in a series of posters on different mineral deposit types being produced by GNS Science to raise awareness of the characteristics of New Zealand mineral deposits and their prospectivity. Epithermal deposits consist of quartz veins, quartz vein stockworks and hydrothermal breccias that are mainly hosted in subaerial andesitic or rhyolitic rocks of Tertiary age. The deposits were formed at depths of typically less than 1 km and at temperatures between 180¦ and 320¦C, although ore grade mineralisation was generally deposited at less than 270¦C.   In New Zealand, epithermal deposits occur in association with late Cenozoic volcanic rocks in the Northland, Coromandel and Taupo volcanic regions. All of the past and present gold production, estimated at greater than 380 t (along with 1300 t Ag) comes from the Miocene-Pliocene Coromandel Volcanic Zone, where about 50 epithermal gold-silver deposits occur over a 200 km long belt. In Northland, silver and mercury have been produced from hot spring type epithermal deposits, and several gold-silver prospects have been identified. Ore grade gold-silver mineralisation is currently being deposited in several active geothermal fields of the Taupo Volcanic Zone, and extinct geothermal systems occur on the western side of the zone. The active systems have provided natural laboratories to help understand the processes of epithermal mineralisation.
