This study was done to evaluate the economic and technical considerations of using pozzolanic materials in order to guide cement manufacturers, pozzolan producers, contractors, Government organizations, and others interested in concrete construction work. Five hundred and thirty-eight samples of pozzolanic raw materials were taken from 27 central and western States. These samples were evaluated by petrographic procedures, and about 200 of the most promising ones were given a complete series of physical tests (American Society for Testing and Materials) to evaluate further their suitability as a pozzolan. This investigation showed that deposits of natural pozzolan materials were widely dispersed in the central and western parts of the United States but that exploiting these deposits would depend on whether they could compete economically with an increasingly abundant industrial waste product--fly ash.

Mineral production may be measured at any of several stages of extraction and processing. The stage of measurement used in the chapter is normally what is termed "mine output." It usually refers to minerals in the form in which they are first extracted from the ground, but customarily includes for some minerals the product of auxiliary processing operations at or near mines.

Paper presented at the IAGOD international symposium on mineralization related to mafic and ultramafic rocks held in Orleans, France, 1-3 September 1993. Geological evidence from tropical laterites indicates clearly that platinum group metals are taken into solution and precipitated to form grains larger than those in the source rocks. Platinum and palladium move differentially in the surface environment, with Pt partitioning into soils and eluvial or alluvial deposits while Pd remains more mobile in natural waters. Natural organic acids, particularly humic acid, can interact with platinum-group elements and concentrate them even in areas where their content in rocks is very low. Experimental work has confirmed that Pt and Pd can be taken into solution by humic acid at room temperature and in geologically short time-spans. Solubility and deposition may be controlled by physicochemical conditions, reaction kinetics or an adsorption effect, or there may be two competing reactions, solubilisation assisted by organic matter and a kinetically slower metal precipitation

A dynamic testing program was performed to evaluate installation procedures, assess capacity of 610-mm (24-inch) diameter open ended steel pipe to evaluate set-up and provide minimum pile tip elevation based on the dynamic testing results. The program was performed for a marine terminal project consisting of a 570-meter (1900-foot) long, overwater railroad trestle. The project location is Santa Marta, Colombia, South America. The subsurface profile generally consisted of 4m (12 ft.) of water and soft to hard silty clays. The piles were installed to an approximate tip elevation of -22 meters (MSL). Three piles were initially dynamically monitored during installation and then later monitored during restrike driving to evaluate pile drivability and bearing capacity including time related capacity increases due to soil "set-up". Knowledge of change in pile capacity with time after end of initial driving is important for design of pile foundations.

Yet, mining is a complex and risky business: plenty of high risk factors can occur and severely affect nature and the miner?s life and health. Especially for small and medium enterprises (SME) risks may also threaten the economic existence of the company. The responsible and sustainable management of a company should thus be based upon the systematic finding and handling of risks or briefly upon an efficient risk management system. Why do we need risk management? Because nobody is perfect and we make mistakes in the normal course of operation.

This is particularly true of the eastern portion of Canada and especially so of the ( authors') province of Nova Scotia. I-Introduction The possibility of adapting low-temperature reduction methods to the treatment of iron ores has been suggested on numerous occasions. Papers published on the subject include, notably, Bulletin 270 of the United States Bureau of Mines on The Production of Sponge Iron, the Symposium of the American Electrochemical Society (1927) on The Gaseous Reduction of Ores and Other Metallic Compounds, and Les Procédés Actuels de Traitement Direct du Minerai de Fer, by A. Mayer (Revue de l'Industrie Minerale, Nov. 15th, 1932) (1). The present paper contains the results of an investigation of the reducibility of some Ontario ores. The concentration of these ores and of the products of reduction has also been investigated.

RECENTLY there has been considerable interest in the production and use of extra hard alloys composed primarily of tungsten and carbon. Dr. Hoyt's recent paper1 gives a good description of these alloys and describes their performance when used as tools. There are a number of these alloys on the market sold under various trade names, and it is the purpose of this paper to describe the results of an investigation of the structure of five of these alloys by means of microscopic and X-ray methods. The samples studied were in the form of small tools or wire-drawing dies, which were either purchased or supplied as samples. They were in some cases not supplied by the original makers but were furnished by the agents in this country, and we wish to call attention to the fact that they may not be truly representative of the materials supplied under the various trade names. No performance data are given and no inference as to the inferiority of one alloy as against any other is made. K. Schröter2 recently described methods for polishing alloys of this type for microscopic examination and has presented photomicrographs of several alloys. However, he did not identify their constituents or describe methods for their identification.

Paper presented at Mineralisation in the Caledonides, the Mike Gallagher memorial meeting held in Edinburgh, 27-28 June 1996. Detailed paragenetic studies of the post-tectonic fracture-hosted vein mineralisation have demonstrated a complex paragenesis, reflecting a multi-phase combination of regional metallogenesis and tectonics through time. Previously published work regarding paragenesis and zoning was oversimplified. Two major epochs of mineralisation resulted in the emplacement of the A1 group of assemblages, from which lead, copper and silver were the main metals mined, and the A2 group, whose galena is only moderately argentiferous but which were major sources of lead and zinc. Tectonic and tentative isotopic evidence points to post-orogenic relaxation as the mechanism for development of the A1 assemblages in the early Devonian, whereas the A2 assemblages are believed to reflect Variscan extensional regimes and regional metallogenesis in the early Carboniferous and Permian

In making judgements on tolerable levels of risk in industry, and in all spheres of life, it needs to be understood that every action gives rise to risk. Without risk, nothing can be done. Without risk, no economy could be advanced. There is a strong tendency to emphasize the risk at work, but persons who are not working are exposed to a different set of risks. Often persons who are not working face greater risks than persons who are working. Simply, in being alive, one is exposed to the risk of an accident, the risk of contracting a disease, and an extremely diverse variety of other risks. According to the Health and Safety Executive of the UK, it is not possible to have a state of zero risk, because ?a state of zero risk does not exist?. Because zero risk is a physical impossibility, it is not possible to design for a state of zero risk in all engineering design. While the strategic target of achieving zero risk is laudable it does not provide any practical guidance to engineers as to what acceptable limits of risk should be. This causes a significant and real problem in the design for and the management of risk. Without meaningful guidelines, engineers, managers and the authorities often find themselves in disagreement. Thus, it has become essential to establish criteria for tolerable levels of risk and unacceptable levels of risk in order to design and manage engineering systems properly.

"A survey of 281 mineral exploration agreements examines the ratios among three ways that may be used to purchase an interest in a mineral property, viz: pay cash, pay shares and make future expenditures on the property.The dollar value of the future expenditures exceeds that of cash or shares by about nine times in most of the 110 agreements that contain cash-expenditure or share-expenditure components. Results suggest that cash and shares are treated about the same in terms of value.Buyers and sellers have opposing priorities for the way that they prefer to purchase a mineral property. These opposing priorities should give rise to a perceived 50:50 balance between cash/share payment and future expenditures to satisfy the idealized situation described by most definitions of fair market value (FMV). This balance between cash/share payments and future expenditures appears to be rationalized in negotiations to a FMV when expenditures are nine times greater than cash and/or payments.On this basis, it is proposed that the FMV of a property may be determined by aggregating the dollar amount of the cash/share payments plus one-ninth the dollar value of future expenditures, as set forth in the respective purchase agreement, and proportionately applying such aggregate to full property value."

An attempt has been made to investigate the performance of green pellet formation of the Daye magnetite concentrate from the weak-magnetic separation plant. The optimum conditions for the commercial production of green pellets was found through experimental research. The satisfactory size range for balling is 75 ¦ 3 per cent -200 mesh. The suitable moisture content is between 8.7 and 9.1 per cent and the optimum amount of bentonite added is between 1.5 and 2.5 per cent. The emphasis is on the size of the feed materials since the grinding fineness, which can be obtained at the plant, at most is 78 per cent -200 mesh. If the optimum fineness for the pellet formation is above this value, this means that the concentrate must be re-ground before balling. The results from experiments showed that a good quality green pellet can be attained by using materials below 78 per cent -200 mesh, which provides a strong foundation for the commercial production of green pellets.

Efforts to evaluate washery performance are nearly as old as the art of coal cleaning, and in former years there was no uniformity in either the methods used or the basic terminology employed. This situation, and the con- fusion it bred, prevailed until about the time of the First International Coal Preparation Conference in 1950, Largely because of the interest of the French coal research organization Cerchar, the subject of evaluating performance was given prime importance at this conference. As a result, there is now a much greater degree of uniformity in terminology and methods of expressing cleaning results. The International Standards Organization currently is working toward international standards of terminology and methods that should improve the situation even more. The various criteria that are used to evaluate the performance of coal- cleaning equipment fall into three categories, depending upon the extent to which they are dependent on the density composition of the raw coal; some are directly dependent, others are only indirectly dependent, and still others are substantially indenpendent.

Unrelieved residual strains can influence the states of stress in rock masses. If cheap, stable structures are to be constructed in Tock in which large pressures are exterted by unrelieved residual strains, the pressures must be either utilized or neutralized. A photoelastic technique has been used to show that the release of residual strains in rocks is influenced by the mechanical properties of anisotropic rock fabrics. The relationships between directions of residual strain release and the attitudes of minor geological structures have been determined. For engineering design purposes it is possible to estimate the principal stress directions in rock containing unrelieved residual strains if the attitudes of such minor geological structures as foliation planes, lineations, and joints are known.INTRODUCTIONQuarry workers have long been aware that near-surface rocks may be highly stressed. In many cases the stresses are too large to be the result of gravitational loads. Dale (1923, pp. 34-35) gives many instances of deformation produced by the violent release of residual strains in quarry rocks. Coates (1963) has described powerful rock bursts and cases of rock deformation underground implying the existence of much larger stresses than are likely to result from present-day gravitational loads. The only explanation is that pressures of up to several thousands of pounds per square inch may be caused by unrelieved residual strains in rock.Instruments have been developed for measuring states of stress in rock masses. Fine tungsten was used to mimic gold and fine and coarse silica and magnetite to mimic gangue. The optimum flow rate of fluidisation water varied from 1.7 l/min for fine silica to 5.6 l/min for coarse magnetite. Overloading at optimum flow rate was then investigated. With fine silica gangue no overload occurred under any of the conditions studied, and there was very little overload with fine magnetite. Coarse silica caused appreciable overload, but only after a significant bed of tungsten had been formed; with fine magnetite gangue the onset of overloading occurred earlier. Finally, with coarse magnetite severe overloading occurred almost immediately. Overloading was modelled using a first-order kinetic rate constant for erosion of the concentrate bed and a critical mass of constant above which it takes place. The results clearly demonstrate the importance of removing oversize to maximise recovery, particularly with a high-density gangue

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the Sheep Creek prospect in the north-central Alaska Range to evaluate the Pb, Zn, Ag, and Sn resources. The studies included field investigations, mineralogical characterization, and concentration tests. Mineralization at Sheep Creek consists of disseminated, banded, and massive pyrite, sphalerite, and galena. Tin occurs as grains of cassiterite (Sn02) in the quartz-mica matrix and within pyrite and sphalerite grains, and Ag occurs in solid solution within the galena. Three bulk surface samples and two sets of core samples were collected at the Sheep Creek prospect for this study. Gravity concentration yielded products with up to 30 pct Sn, and the best result was a product that recovered 52 pct of the Sn at a grade of 22 pct Sn. Bulk sulfide flotation yielded products that recovered up to 89 pct of the Zn, 73 pct of the Pb, and 75 pct of the Ag, but grades were relatively low; selective flotation would significantly increase the grades.

In the mining industry, drilling accuracy has a significant effect on the economy of operations. In this paper, results from the Nkana Division of the former Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines are presented. For the stope investigated, it was found that the extra operational costs alone were 462% of the planned costs! Clearly, there is more than good reason to pay attention to drilling of good quality holes.

Several economic factors have caused the surface mining industry to require large-capacity shovels and trucks for efficient, high-production, low-cost operations. Some of those factors include technological advancements in equipment, commodity market depressions, increased labor and maintenance costs, contractural obligations and harsh operating conditions. The difficult operating conditions in surface mines, however, pose challenges to the use of high-capacity equipment. They include space limitations, weak over-burden, and weathered soils and rocks. So mining companies face major challenges in selecting appropriate shovels to meet the technical, operating, safety, environmental and economic requirements of their mines.
