Selective Blast Mining (SBM) makes use of milli-second sequential blasting technology to separate the valuable reef material from waste rock in the blasting operation at stope faces in the mining of tabular ore bodies such as exist in the gold and platinum mines in South Africa. The waste rock is cast blast to the back of the stoping area, and the reef material is fractured and deposited close to the stope face. Only the reef material is transported to the surface. A simplified economic model is presented to evaluate the economic benefits of SBM. Although premature, in that adequate experimental demonstration of the validity of the model has not yet been possible, the model is presented since it indicates substantial benefits in the case of narrow reef gold mines. It is suggested that many marginal mines should seriously consider SBM. Benefits can also be realised in platinum mines, but a lot more experimental work is necessary to establish cost parameters more reliably. Some practical experience in the use of SBM in the mining of the UG2 reef is presented.

"The Texada Mill is a unique iron operation producing High Grade sinter iron concentrate and a by-product copper, gold, silver concentrate. The plant is complex and extremely flexible to handle the many varieties of ore. Two iron concentrates are made and blended. A coarse iron concentrate from primary grinding and a fine concentrate after rougher flotation to remove all the sulphides.All the tailings from iron processing are collected, dewatered, reground and floated for additional copper recovery.The entire milling operation has been carried out in all sea water for seven years and mixtures of sea, fresh, and reclaimed water for ten years prior to that.A very stable float results from the use of sea water at the natural pH8. Reagent Consumption is lower and Metallic Corrosion of mill liners and grinding media is actually less than local fresh water or mixtures of fresh and sea water.Marine growth in pipe lines can be periodically removed by violently bubbling high pressure air up through the water filled mains.Location:Texada Mines is located on tide water on the west side of Texada Island 100 miles northwest of Vancouver, B. C.The Island is served by a 30 car ferry, tug and barge and a scheduled air service from Vancouver to a company maintained air strip near the mine.The climate is moderate with about 30 inches of rain during the winter and relatively dry summers."

Risk analysis is an important step in the design of rock slopes in open pit mining. Risk is defined as the product of the probability of slope failure and the consequences of the failure, and is generally evaluated in terms of safety and economic risk. Most of the risk analysis done at present is based on the use of limit equilibrium (LE) techniques in evaluating the probability of failure (POF) of the slopes. The approach typically makes use of full Monte Carlo simulations of the limit equilibrium models, with all uncertain variables randomly varied. The number of required simulations is generally over a thousand, at times as high as 20 000, in order to produce statistically valid results of the POF. Such an approach is clearly not practical when using numerical modelling programs dueto the high computational effort required. This paper explores the impact of using numerical modelling instead of the traditional LE techniques in evaluating the probability of slope failure. The difference in the overall assessed risk, in terms of economic impact, for the mining operation is then evaluated. With numerical models, approximate methods are used in the calculation of the probability of failure instead of full Monte Carlo simulations. This paper will use a method called the response surface methodology (RSM) for estimating the POF from numerical analyses. Simple slope models were used to verify the accuracy of the RSM method by comparing the results with those obtained from full Monte Carlo simulations. It is shown that there is good agreement between the POF values computed using full Monte Carlo simulation and those obtained using the RSM method. Finally, the use of numerical modelling in the assessment of risk is shown to bring a significant difference in the result compared with that from LE methods. One of the reasons for the difference is that LE models tend to underestimate the failure volumes and hence the consequences of slope failure.

There has been much debate in recent years regarding the number of Geology (Earth Science) graduates produced in Australia. The key variable has commonly been assumed to be the placement of graduates in the mineral and petroleum industries. Although not wishing to deny the importance of this element, we contend that Geoscience studies should be given to a wider variety of graduates. The essence is to make students and future citizens more environmentally aware. INTRODUCTION Geoscience is fundamental to exploration and to the well-being of the minerals industry and hence the Australian economy. The value of mineral primary products exports for the past three years has been: 1895 $15.3 billion 1986 $14.8 billion 1987 $16.3 billion (Data source: B.M.R) The mining industry supplies about 40% of Australia's export earnings. However the overall value of Geoscience to the Australian economy is much greater. At the opening of the ANZAAS conference in Townsville during May 1987, Sir Bruce Watson , Chairman of the Mt. Isa Mines Ltd., made a plea for a national re-examination of the way science is taught in secondary schools. In particular he emphasized the point that the community should be more aware of the importance of Geoscience and the value of the mining industry to Australia.

This is the third in a series of reports on properties of commercial motor fuels, made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Cooperative Fuel Research (C. F. R.) Committee and the Bureau of Mines of the Department of the Interior. The first report gave data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36.3/ The second report gave the same data for motor gasolines sold during the summer of 1936)4/ As was the case with the first cooperative gasoline survey, reports were received for some areas from only one company and in other areas from two companies that did not in all instances report on the same brands of gasoline. In still other areas reports were received from five or six companies on the same brands of gasoline. Thus, it can be seen that data on gasolines are unequal in regard, to the number of reports that were averaged in calculating the data shown in table 1. The data from the Pacific Coast were averaged by the Pacific Coast technical group before submission and are published exactly as they were submitted.

The Gilt Edge Superfund Site is a former heap-leach gold mine that currently is being remediated in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Mine runoff water is treated before release from the site. The field pH, before treatment, is about 3, and the water contains arsenic and some heavy metals, in addition to sulfate concentrations of about 1400 to 1500 mg/L. In the Keystone area of the Black Hills, naturally occurring arsenic has been detected in ground-water samples from wells. Keystone City Well #4, which is not used currently, showed arsenic concentrations of 36 parts per billion (ppb) and sulfate concentrations of about 19 mg/L. With field samples of water from these sites, a limestone-based method was successful in reducing arsenic and heavy metals concentrations. The results are significant because previous research with the limestone-based method mainly had involved samples prepared with distilled water in the laboratory, in which interference of other ions such as sulfate did not occur. The research indicates the potential for broader field applications of the limestone-based removal method.

In today's rapid changing construction world, the business pressures on piling and deep foundations reach sky-high levels. Ever increasing complexity of construction projects do severely contribute to these business pressures. Projects are often constructed in densely populated areas and located close to vulnerable buildings and infrastructure. The inherent uncertainty of ground conditions plays a dominating role in these foundation projects. Effective risk management is a key success factor for profitable and sustainable operations of piling and deep foundations. It starts with a fundamental requirement to be aware of risks. Next the different risk perspectives of all stakeholders in any foundation project have to be acknowledged. A simple and structured risk management approach is introduced, to demonstrate that effective risk management is not necessarily that complicated. A major element is the contractual allocation of risks, as a result from differing ground conditions. It is based on the so-called Geotechnical Baseline Report (GBR). The main objective of the GBR is to provide a clear contractual arrangement for the allocation of risks, arising from differing site conditions. The benefits of explicit risk management in general and contractual risk allocation in particular are illustrated with an example and experiences. The presented structured risk management approach, including contractual risk allocation, is still rather new. It proves to be promising for cost-effective risk control of piling and deep foundation projects, anywhere in the world.

Eleven workshops were held in various locations throughout the country in an attempt to reach the many diverse groups working in various mineral commodity areas and special ties. These meetings were held between March 1, 1974 and June 25, 1975. They were held under the auspices of the Bureau of Mines Contract to the University of Missouri-Rolla which was designed to help define Bureau research and development priorities. At each workshop a summary of current Bureau research and development was presented and the attendees were asked to present their ideas on what Research and Development programs should be undertaken to meet their needs locally. Participants included representatives of federal and state agencies, educational institutions, mining companies, equipment companies and other interested parties. The workshops covered under this report include lead mining in Missouri, limestone mining, coal mining both surface and underground in the midwest and in the Rocky Mountain area, iron mining in Minnesota, two top management meetings on institutional problems and, finally, a special two-day meeting on roof control.

Por ello, el presente texto señala la optimización del oro control de Tintaya a través de la metodología Six Sigma, donde se logra mejorar el proceso desde el muestreo de blasthole hasta el envío de mineral a las plantas, se minimiza los eventos de fuga de mineral a los botaderos y con la data confiable de los blasthole, se elaboran modelos de corto plazo que permiten generar planes predecibles de minado.

This paper is one of a series on milling methods and costs being. published by the Bureau of Mines. The milling practices and special problems relating to grinding, tailings disposal, and choice of a treatment process at the Cardinal mill are discussed. The property of the Cardinal Gold Mining Co. is about 18 miles southwest of the town of Bishop, Inyo County, Calif., at an altitude of approximately 8,500 feet. The camp has been designated Bishop Creek by the postal authorities. The property comprises 33 mining claims, including fractions and millsite in sections 19, 20, 29, and 30, T. 8 S., R. 31 E. These claims are located in a general way along the strike of a band of quartzite.

The excavatability of the rock mass in a proposed open pit mine at Globe-Progress has been assessed. The rock mass was initially evaluated by determining variations in seismic velocity and by using the Revised Size-Strength Chart. These two assessments should be performed during the feasibility or early investigation stages of a project. A complete rock mass excavatability assessment using a suite of geological and geotechnical properties was then performed using three methods: RMR System; Modified Rippability Rating; and a productivity estimation method. These three methods should be applied during the investigation and design stages of a project. The preliminary assessments show that most of the open pit rock mass is expected to be rippable. The complete assessment differentiates weak, fair and good rock masses within the open pit. Weak rock mass exists along the Globe-Progress Shear zone, located along the northern and eastern pit walls and also in the western pit wall where the Chemist Shop Fault is located are both regions are expected to be diggable. Relatively weak rock mass also exists along the Globe-Progress Shear axial hinge. The Globe-Progress Shear limbs are generally fair to good rock where moderate to hard ripping should be expected.

"The SUSOP« Framework is a new technique that helps incorporate sustainable development principles and objectives into the design and operation of businesses. Developed through the Co-operative Research Centre for Sustainable Resource Processing, it brings a design methodology to sustainability, similar to what hazard and risk techniques such as HAZOP did for safety.Metallica Minerals Limited (æMetallicaÆ) adopted the SUSOP« framework to help identify opportunities and risks that could directly improve or affect its flagship SCONI (nickel-cobalt and scandium) project. This project has the potential to become the worldÆs largest producer of scandium oxide (æscandiaÆ) which is used in solid oxide fuel cells and strengthens aluminium alloys. Located northwest of Townsville in Queensland, the plant site will be located within the previously mined and partially rehabilitated Greenvale Nickel Mine. By applying the SUSOP« framework through a series of multi-disciplinary workshops and offline analysis, Metallica was able to identify numerous sustainability opportunities and risks. Opportunities were clustered together to form concepts to develop a more holistic understanding of the projectÆs overall potential contribution to sustainable development as well as determine where key risks could be mitigated. Four key concepts were identified: Waste and Water Workforce Community and Enterprise Development Energy and Greenhouse Gases (GHG). Metallica was able to include a range of initiatives that could deliver enhanced environmental, social and community outcomes into their mine development plan. These included measures to reduce reliance on water, reduce the volume of waste, provide local opportunities for training and skilled employment and create support for local enterprise development. These measures also resulted in a significant reduction in the capital estimate of the project.This paper provides an overview of the SUSOP« framework, details its application to the SCONI project and discusses the outcomes that will help establish the projectÆs strong sustainable development credentials and improved business outcomes.CITATION:Corder, G, Currey, N and Becker, G, 2013. The three-dimensional (3D) fractal dimension is an important parameter to analyze the 3D structure and flocculation effect of the hematite flocs. In this work, the 3D fractal dimension of hematite flocs was predicted by establishing the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm optimized with the back propagation (BP) neural network (PSO-BP). The proposed model considers four factors, namely, the flocculant quantity, flocculation time, stirring speed, and temperature, as the input parameters. We normalize the input data during the preprocessing stage. The BP neural network was optimized by using the PSO algorithm for realizing the 3D fractal dimension. The prediction accuracy and effectiveness of the model were evaluated. The experimental results showed that the predictions performed by the proposed PSO-BP neural network were better than that of BP neural network. In addition, the root mean square error (RMSE), mean squared relative error (MSRE), mean absolute error (MAE), and mean absolute relative error (MARE) of the proposed model are lower, compared with the errors of the BP network. Similarly, the measurement coefficient R2 of the proposed model is higher, compared with the BP network. The maximum absolute error of the model is 0.0772, the maximum relative error is 0.02405, and the regression coefficient r is 0.98592. These results showed that the proposed model has a good performance and high prediction accuracy. When verifying the practicability and the effectiveness of the proposed PSO-BP model, the prediction results of 10 groups of hematite flocculation experimental data under different conditions showed that the prediction value of the proposed PSO-BP model was closer to the ground truth as compared to the BP model. Therefore, the proposed model is suitable for predicting the 3D fractal dimension of hematite flocculation.

U.S. Minerals Coordinating Council Advised. -The Critical Materials Act of 1981, H. R. 4281, introduced on July 27, would create a Council on Critical Materials in the White House Executive Office to oversee Federal materials programs involving $1 billion committed to research by 14 agencies, and to serve as the President's focal point to evaluate materials policy. It was introduced by Congressman Fuqua (D-Fla.) whose Committee on Science and Technology has over-sight over the implementation of P. L. 96-479, the National Materials and Minerals Policy, Research and Development Act of 1980. Bulgaria's Mineral Bank. -Recently Bulgaria established a mineral bank to facilitate receipt of foreign credits for exploiting Bulgaria's mineral raw materials. The bank has wide powers to enter into business arrangements with foreign creditors. Bulgaria's main interest in trading with the West is to import the technology for developing energy and mineral resources.

Argentina follows Venezuela and Mexico as the largest producers of crude petroleum and natural gas in Latin America. Argentina 1S practically self-sufficient in fuels, but relies substantially on imports for its supply of copper, iron ore, ferroalloys, sulfur, and fertilizers. Mining activity is limited and is in an incipient stage of growth, considering the country's potential for mining. Most nonfuel mineral output in 1979 consisted primarily of minerals used for construction, while only 9% are other nonmetallic, and 2% are metallic minerals. Argentina is Latin America's major producer of boron minerals and uranium (yellow cake). Mineral exports consist primarily of borates, uranium concentrates, and of late, some tin. These exports have in the past been shipped mostly to Great Britain. London banks have been involved in arranging financing for St. Joe Minerals Corp. IS planned development of the El Pachon copper deposit (see map), and were being counted upon to also back the development of large copper and manganese projects. The following is a review of Argentine mineral production in 1979: (For 1981, the production of boron minerals is put at 167,000 metric tons and uranium at 300,000 metric tons.)

The iron ore deposits of the Port Hedland district of North Western Australia are associated with band'ed sedimentary iron formations that form part of the local succession of folded and faulted Archaean volcanic and sedimentary rocks. The iron formations are regarded as the protore beds or sources of the iron which became concentrated by supergene processes to form commercial grade iron ore deposits.Iron oxide deposits occurring in situ within the protore beds are considered to be of residual-replacement origin, due to supergene leaching of gangue minerals and' deposition of secondary iron oxides in their place, Two types of deposit have been recognized. Lode deposits are deep lenses of massive hematite located adjacent to major faults. These deposits are thought to be very old and to have originated by supergene processes during the long period of erosion represented by the major unconformity between the Archaean rocks and the overlying Proterozoic beds. The other type, known as crust ore deposits, are shallow cappings of hematite and goethite on hills formed by the outcrops of steeply dipping protore beds. These deposits could have originated as far back as the early Mesozoic and it is possible that the ore-forming process is continuing at a slow rate at the present day.Deposits formed by erosion and re-deposition of material derived from pre-existing residual-type deposits are known as derived deposits. These include conglomerates and scree accumulations of various types and ages and pisolitic deposits formed by supergene leaching of transported detritus. Derived deposits range in age from early Proterozoic to Recent. While Acid Rock Drainage (ARD) occurs naturally, its management poses challenges especially at the decommissioned sites. Two passive systems were designed and implemented at two different decommissioned mining sites in Canada in order to treat the seepage with ARD characteristics. One seep originating from a reclaimed tailings pond was neutral mine drainage (NMD) containing circumneutral pH and dissolved metals (e.g., nickel, zinc) in elevated concentrations. The other ARD from a tailings stack showed net acid drainage characteristics with low pH and higher metal concentrations than regulated limits. Due to the different ARD characteristics occurring at each site, different types of treatment systems were designed and implemented. Both sites experience extreme winter conditions. The NMD has been treated mainly by limestone drain and aerobic systems since 1997. The acid ARD has been treated by a system consisting of an anaerobic sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) cell, an aerobic cell and a limestone filter since 2004. As this site has no access roads, space, or power, a significant capital cost as well as sludge disposal/storage requirements would have been required to institute a chemical (active) treatment system. Both systems have been successfully treating seepage and producing a water quality year round that could comply with regulated objectives.

The u.s. Bureau of Mines investigated electrode designs for electrowinning lead metal from a LiCl-KCl-PbCI2 electrolyte at 4500 C. The major objective of this investigation was to decrease the energy requirement for lead electrowinning. Electrolysis was performed in a bench-scale cell using several graphite electrode assemblies. Such parameters as electrode spacing, current density, and chlorine gas removal from the anode were investigated in the bench-scale tests. An optimum electrode assembly, termed the sawtooth design, was scaled up and operated at 3,000 and 4,000 A. The sawtooth electrodes operating at 3,000 A produced lead for 0.66 kW·h/kg. The electrodes were constructed by cutting large triangular grooves in the electrode surfaces. The electrodes were placed together such that the triangular peaks of one electrode projected into the triangular valleys of the other electrode. Chlorine did not build up on the anode with the sawtooth electrodes.

Bureau of Mines Information Circular 16, Bibliography of Investment and Operating Costs for Chemical and Petroleum Plants, was published in October 1949 as an aid in making estimates of investment and operating costs of processes for manufacturing synthetic liquid fuels. Development of such processes by the Bureau of Mines was authorized by Public Law 290, 78th Congress. This bibliography included refer¬ences to and abstracts of publications appearing from 1930 to September 1948 on all processes in general use in the petroleum refining and chemical industries. Publications in this field have been numerous since compilation of the above bibliography, and the present report was prepared to cover the field from September 1948 through June 1952.3/

The mechanistic approach to comminution consisting of incorporating particulate breakage functions into a suitable population balance equation has been developed by a number of researchers over the past decade or so. (1) To date this approach has been developed and demonstrated primarily for batch-operated, laboratory or small-scale ball mills. However, since industrial mills are mostly quite large and operated in the continuous mode; suitable population balance models and methods for obtaining the necessary breakage and other model parameters must be developed. This paper describes and investigates a radioisotope tracer technique for this purpose, Population balance models previously developed(2,3) are adapted for this study.
