This Bureau of Mines report describes the laboratory processing of manganese nodules and the results of tailings characterization obtained during the cooperative program with the Department of Commerce's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Bureau. Five technically feasible first-generation nodule processing methods were operated at bench scale to generate sufficient tailings and slags for physical and chemical analyses. A description is given for the laboratory operation of the individual unit operations of each process. The laboratory-generated tailings and slags were tested for physical properties, mineral content, elemental and ion content, and leachability for all five processes. The results of leachate testing using the Environmental Protection Agency extraction procedure (EP) toxicity test, the American Society for Testing and Materials shake extraction test, and the EPA-U.S. Army Corps of Engineers seawater elutriant test showed very low to negligible leaching of metals from the tailings and slags. Results of the EP toxicity test demonstrated that the wastes are nonhazardous as defined in the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (Public Law 94-580).

Paper presented at a meeting on: Artificial intelligence in the minerals sector, held in Nottingham, UK, 20 April 1993. The design and scheduling of open pit operations are consistent problems encountered by the surface mining industry. Numerous techniques and algorithms have been developed to assist the mining engineer in the creation of optimum development strategies. Virtually all the practical techniques that have been produced have concentrated on one of the aspects (limit definition or scheduling) at the expense of the other. It has long been recognised, however, that the two activities are intrinsically linked and thus solving either problem independently of the other can only ever produce sub-optimal results as a whole. This has been termed the "circular reasoning problem". It has also been recognised that, for all practical-sized situations, solving both problems simultaneously is virtually impossible using conventional techniques due to the massive size of the search space involved. A technique is presented which is based on a self-learning genetic algorithm, which provides a combined pit limit and extraction schedule simultaneously in order to maximise the NPV (net present value) of the extraction. The theory is developed in two-dimensions and a number of examples of its application are presented. It is proposed that this approach is a highly efficient, heuristic technique offering the potential to transcend the circular reasoning difficulties of separate pit limit and extraction scheduling systems. It is well known in the robotics community that the ability to determine the position of vehicles in real time is a key enabling technology required for automation, traffic management, and to ensure safety in the presence of multiple vehicles. Because of this, the introduction of global positioning systems (GPS) has had a remarkable impact on the surface mining industry, enabling real-time tracking of mobile assets, improved safety, and production optimization. Unfortunately, satellite-based GPS is not available underground. This paper reports on the preliminary results of a study to develop a robust method for globally consistent mapping of large-scale underground mine environments. We believe that this may additionally become the first step towards the development of a novel underground positioning technology. Presented are preliminary results from data collected at two underground mines using an Atlas Copco ST14 LHD machine.

With the development of larger mine-haulage trucks in recent years, the visual field of the driver has diminished correspondingly. Specifically, the operator's lack of direct vision in the right front area and directly to the rear constitutes a serious hazard to personnel in nearby small utility vehicles. Recently developed electronic technology has made it possible to supplement the use of mirrors and fresnel lenses to warn the operator of specific collision dangers in the truck's blind areas. This Bureau of Mines report describes the results of a coordinated contract and in-house research program to develop and test in-mine prototype electronic systems to detect the presence of smaller vehicles within the blind areas of large mine-haulage trucks. Each system utilized transmitters installed on the smaller vehicles and receivers installed on the haulage trucks. Transmitting techniques tested included both low-and high-frequency radio waves. On-vehicle testing established the engineering feasibility of each approach. Further private sector product development to improve reliability and reduce system costs is recommended. Mining companies should consider the advantages of each type of system.

"The operation of industrial flotation columns requires the control of at least two variables, the interface position and the bias rate, by manipulation of some appropriate operating variables. Problems arise due to the reliability of existing methods of measuring the bias (i.e bias = tailings water - feed water), a situation which has often forced the industry to disregard this control loop. Moreover, when using such a measuring approach, the identification of the process dynamics is impossible. A second problem arises from the possible interaction between both control loops that might call for the use of a more complex multivariable control strategy.Recent work done at Lava1 University has demonstrated the feasibility of an independent sensor for bias, which models the relation between the conductivity profile across the interface and the bias value using a neural network algorithm. A 250 cm height, 5.25 cm diameter Plexiglas laboratory column was equipped with a series of conductivity electrodes in its uppermost part (across the interface) to measure both interface position and bias rate. Using such equipment, the flotation column dynamics were identified. The results thus obtained permitted the design and implementation of a distributed PI control strategy, where bias was associated to wash water rate and froth depth to tails rate. Both PI controllers were tuned using a frequency-response tuning method. Results of both identification and process control are presented and discussed.INTRODUCTIONFlotation columns are used for the separation of valuable minerals from a carrier gangue. Typically, this device is a tall (9 to 14 m height) cylinder (1 to 3 m in diameter) although other cross sectional shapes are also used. Finely ground ore is fed as a pulp at about 2 m from the top of the column, and pressurized air is introduced through a sparger at the bottom. If the pulp has been properly conditioned with adequate chemical reagents (collectors and modifiers), the valuable mineral particles falling by gravity will attach themselves to the rising air bubbles, and the air-particle aggregates will rise to the top of the column where they overflow as a stream called the concentrate. The gangue particles,, that do not attach to the air bubbles, fall down the column being withdrawn at its bottom in a stream called the tails.A particular characteristic of flotation columns is the addition of a fine spray of water at the top. As the water flows down through the froth zone, it washes out the entrained gangue particles from the mineralized bubbles, thus improving the quality of the concentrate recovered at the top. As a result of its cleaning action, this water stream is called the wash water and the upper zone, the cleaning zone. In order to ensure a downward flow of wash water, a proper water balance must be kept in the froth zone, otherwise the water added at the top might shortcircuit to the concentrate without performing any cleaning action. This net downward flow of water inside the froth zone is called the bias and represents an important operating variable of a flotation column."

"Xstrata Alloys – Eland Platinum concentrator (South Africa) has recently been commissioned and is now initiating a challenging optimisation program encompassing the entire operation. Process control improvements are key elements of the program and initial results have demonstrated how leveraging from current assets can bring significant improvements through overall reduction of variability. This paper gives a brief overview of the operations and details how Eland is striving to become a top tier leader with advanced regulatory control strategies recently implemented. Results reveal that what can be achieved in a standard control system (PLC or DCS) should not be underestimated as the first interventions led to a steadier operation of the primary ball mill circuit. Following the improvements, significant and sustained reductions of standard variation were observed for key process variables around their set-point: primary ball mill feed rate (72 %), rougher feed density (58 %), and rougher feed flow rate (47 %). A path forward has been identified to tackle further opportunities around the primary grinding circuit: water balance management, throughput optimisation as well as charge and power draw control.INTRODUCTIONThere are numerous approaches to mineral processing plant optimisation. As the benefits of determining the right reagent types, mix, dosage and addition points, or the proper charge of grinding media in a mill are fully appreciated, there is still nowadays some misunderstanding and misconceptions about process control in general and how it can contribute to the whole optimisation process. The confusion between the various disciplines involved, i.e. instrumentation, control system programming, automation and process control, certainly does not serve the best interest of the industry with this regard."

"In recent years the Environmental Research Group of the KVI has been developing a number of radiometric techniques that may be employed in mineral sand exploration. These techniques involve: radiometric fingerprinting for assessing sand provenances and mineralogical composition; thermoluminescence for dating and provenance determination of sediments; a towed seabed detector to map seafloors for radiogenic heavy minerals and assessing heavy mineral volumes; and simplified transport mechanism models to explain and predict heavy mineral concentrations.All techniques exploit the property that heavy minerals as a group contain concentrations of naturally occurring uranium and thorium that are a hundred to a thousand times higher than in light minerals. In this paper the physics of a number of methods will be described together with a number of results. Based on these results potential applications to mineral exploration and mining are discussed."

Batu Hijau is a porphyry copper-gold deposit located onSumbawa Island in the western Banda Arc of Indonesia. The deposit has been evaluated from 54 000 m of drilling in 105 diamond drill holes over a surface area of 1.2 km2 and to a depth of 1000 m below surface (412 m below sea level). A provisional plan is being evaluated to mine 642 million tonnes at an average grade of 0.61% Cu and 0.55 g/t Au (variable cut-off) from an open pit in the higher grade portion of the resource.   The deposit is associated with a calc-alkaline intrusive complex that was emplaced in a thick sequence of andesitic pyroclastic rocks. The oldest and most widespread intrusion is porphyritic to medium-grained, equigranular, quartz hornblende diorite. At Batu Hijau the western diorite contact zone was intruded by two phases of tonalite. The older tonalite is a stock increasing from 200 m diameter at surface to 500 m at sea level. It consists of quartz, plagioclase and hornblende phenocrysts set in a groundmass of similar composition. A younger tonalite intrudes the tonalite stock, quartz and plagioclase phenocrysts are more abundant and it has a finer groundmass than the older tonalite. Brecciation occurs near the older tonalite contacts but there are no breccia pipes or late-stage features such as pebbledykes or postmineralisation intrusive rocks.   Hydrothermal alteration of Old Tonalite and adjacent rocks is centred on the Old Tonalite and is zoned from a core of pervasive potassic alteration grading to an outer propylitic halo. At depth a propylitic assemblage is developed in the low grade core in the Old Tonalite. Phyllic alteration, late stage and mainly fracture controlled, overprints both potassic and inner propylytic zones. Intermediate argillic alteration overprinting is widespread, particularly on the eastern side of the hydrothermal system, where advanced argillic alteration overlies argillic alteration.   Ore grade mineralisation is cylindrical in shape, up to 800 m in diameter, and is centred on the Old Tonalite. A high grade shell (>0.75% Cu) forms an upward tapering cone in and around the Old Tonalite and reaches the surface in the centre of the deposit. Lower in the shell >l g/t Au and >2 g/t Ag accompany >1% Cu. Below 75 m above sea level mineralisation in the Old Tonalite rapidly decreases as a weakly mineralised core develops, but the limb continues to contain mineralisation to at least 412 m below sea level. Fracture and vein-controlled chalcopyrite and bornite are the dominant hypogene copper minerals and are the hosts for most of the gold mineralisation. Gold occurs free and in the lattice of the copper sulphides, and has been observed in quartz.   Weathering, especially where argillic alteration is developed, has produced a strongly leached cap, up to 147 m thick, below which is an irregular copper enriched supergene zone. Where leaching is not developed, such as over the centre of the deposit, an irregular oxide zone and a weakly developed supergene zone may be present.

An advanced semi-stochastic algorithm for constrained multi-objective optimization has been adapted and combined with experimental testing and verification to determine optimum concentrations of aJ10ying elements in heat-resistant and corrosion-resistant H-Series austenitic stainless steel alloys. The objective was to simultaneously maximize a number of alloy's mechanical properties. This research will result in a rigorous tool for the design of high-strength H-Series steels and other types of alloys unattainable by any means existing at the present time. Such a material-by-design tool will also be able to reduce or minimize the need for the addition of expensive elements such as Cr, Ni, Co, Nb, Ti, V, etc. and still obtain the optimum properties of an aJ1oy.

One of the best methods by which the results of accident-prevention work can be measured for any particular period is to keep an accurate record of the accident experience, which may then also be compared with the experience of others. The purpose of this report is to compare records of the salt-mining companies operating in Louisiana, and their assistance in making available their accident records is gratefully acknowledged. PRODUCTION Four companies produce salt in Louisiana -Avery Salt Co., Avery Island; Jefferson Island Salt Mining Co., Jefferson Island; Myles Salt Co., Weeks; and Carey Salt Co., Winnfield. Three of these companies operate within 30 miles of each other in the southern part of the State, and the other operates in the central part.

"Synvolcanic structures played a fundamental role in the genesis, morphology, and siting of volcanogenic massive sulfide ores and associated hydrothermal alteration in the Archean South Sturgeon Lake caldera complex. The most voluminous and persistent hydrothermal venting and massive sulfide deposition occurred along synvolcanic rifts and grabens associated with faults and tectonic fissures that created permeable fracture zones deep enough to access the underlying hydrothermal reservoir. The type of fracturing is highly variable and changes with the composition, competency, degree of consolidation, and alteration of host rocks. Synvolcanic structures and fracture styles also vary according to the amount and type of tectonic movement, including extension-related collapse, shearing and faulting perpendicular to the principal direction of extension, and orthogonal faulting and shearing. Permeable conduits were created by tension fracturing along fault zones, brittle deformation at the intersections of orthogonal faults, and by extensional fractures in stockworks. In texturally uniform footwall rocks, the distribution of alteration zones was controlled by the morphology of the structural conduit. In rocks with vertical and/or lateral facies, permeability, and competency changes (e.g., Lyon Lake graben), there was an additional stratigraphic control over fluid migration. Some crosscutting synvolcanic structures, alteration zones, and intrusions appear as stratiform units at the present erosion surface due to regional deformation and the present attitude of the volcanic stratigraphy.Hydrothermal mineral assemblages (e.g., quartz, carbonates, chlorite, pyrite, chalcopyrite) infilling structurally induced fractures provide good evidence of fluid migration pathways. However, mineralogy can vary significantly according to the fluid characteristics, host rock geochemistry, and subsequent metamorphic history of the area.Clearly, one of the best methods for locating volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits is to delineate the attitudes of synvolcanic structures, and explore those that show evidence of associated high-temperature hydrothermal mineral assemblages. Excellent exploration targets occur where synvolcanic structures with hydrothermal alteration intersect paleo-seafloor horizons."

The Triton lode is a schistose feldspar biotite chlorite rock with quartz, carbonate, pyrite and some pyrrhotite. Its more chloritic sections strongly resemble the enclosing greenstones, its more feldspathic portions are indistinguishable from the flne-grained phases of the porphyry dyke into which the southern extremity of the ore body merges. The ore body' has a length of 880 ft. and an average width of I2t ft.; in places this widens to as much as 30 ft.The average dip is 85° west and pitch of the ore shoot 75° south.METHOD OF SAMPLING.With the exception of a limited amount of channel sampling (a reference to which is made elsewhere in this paper) all the sampling is by chip sample.The samplers use a hammer weighing approximately 11 lb. and chip directly into the sample bags. Sampling is generally carried out over 3-ft. sections and portions thereof to the nearest half foot-thus a face 8t ft. wide is divided up into two sections of 3 ft. each and one section of 2 ft.-no measurements of less than 4 ft. are used and calculations are all in feet and dwt. per long ton.In the oxidised stopes wp.ere the lode is much narrower, .i.e., 6 ft., sampling is over 2-ft. sections. The need for the hydraulic transportation of coal in the New South Wales coal industry, both from the coal face to the surface and from the coal mine to the consumer or the port for export, is explained. Details of research projects currently in progress and involving the hydraulic transportation of New South Wales coals are given together with information on the hydraulic transportation of coal in the United States of America. The potential of hydraulic transportation as a viable alternative to the proposed expansion and upgrading of the New South Wales railway system to meet the projected New South Wales coal production to the year 2000 is described.

THE purpose of this paper is a comparison, based on genesis, of the ore deposits associated with the igneous rocks of the central Montana Rockies. Considered separately, without attention to their origin, the orebodies appear to be distributed haphazard, with no fundamental laws controlling their position and character. It is believed, however, that if all the factors be weighed, this apparent confusion will to a large degree disappear. The, first essential to such a comparison is detailed knowledge of the individual mines, as to their geographic position (see Fig. 1), their mineralogical character, and in particular the derivation of their ores.1 The authors of this paper have pursued such an investigation for the past 6 years, and have accumulated a mass of evidence that enables a preliminary correlation to be attempted. In connection with the gathering of data for a report on the geology of the Humacao district of southeastern Porto Rico during the summer of 1916, under the auspices of the Scientific Survey of Porto Rico and the Virgin Islands, conducted by the New York Academy of Sciences, the writer had an opportunity to make a brief examination of the magnetite deposits of the eastern portion of the island. Inasmuch as these deposits have attracted some attention as possible future sources of iron ore, and as there is only scanty reference made to them in literature,' a short description based on this reconnaissance survey was deemed to be worthy of record. The magnetite deposits of eastern Porto Rico occur in association with a belt of limestone, trending approximately S 53° E, which begins 11/2 miles east of Juncos and can be traced for about 6 miles toward the coast. Four outcrops of magnetite were observed, which are designated as Nos. 1, 2, 3, and 4, respectively, on the map shown in Fig. 1. Pillars with width to height ratios of less than 1.0 are frequently created in underground hard rock mines. The strength of slender pillars can be estimated using empirically developed equations. However, the equations can provide variable results when the width-to-height ratios approach 0.5. This paper investigates some of the issues affecting pillar strength at low width-to-height ratios in hard brittle rock. The investigation includes an evaluation of empirical pillar strength data presented in the literature and observations of pillar performance in underground limestone mines in the eastern United States, supplemented by numerical modeling in which failure processes and sensitivity of slender pillars to variations in rock mass properties are evaluated. The results showed that the strength of slender pillars is more variable than that of wider pillars. The numerical model results demonstrated the increasing role of brittle rock failure in slender pillar strength. The absence of confinement in slender pillars can result in a fully brittle failure process, while wider pillars fail in a combined brittle and shearing mode. The onset of spalling in slender pillars occurs at or near the ultimate strength, while this is not the case for wider pillars. Slender pillars are shown to be more sensitive to the presence of discontinuities than wider pillars, which can partly explain the increased variability of slender pillar strength. Two examples are presented, which illustrate failure initiation by brittle spalling and the sensitivity of slender pillars to the presence of discontinuities.

Eng (Mining Engineering) degree The stability of a ferrosilicon dense medium suspension is one of the most important parameters to keep under control since it determines the density gradient of the medium in the separation zone and thus directly influences separation sharpness. The stability of ferrosilicon suspensions were characterized using settling tests employing a differential pressure method. Particles smaller than 45 µm and especially the ore fines played an important role in the settling behaviour of the solids. The short process of electric furnace steelmaking with direct reduction iron (DRI) as raw material is an important process for smelting high-quality and special steels. In order to prepare high-quality DRI, the pellets with basicity of natural basicity and 0.4 were prepared from magnetite concentrate (MR=0.09, MR=0.4) and hematite concentrate (HR=0.02, HR=0.4). Based on the HYL method, the gas-based direct reduction experiments were conducted under the condition of rich hydrogen (H2/CO = 2.6). The reduction index (RI), reduction swelling (RSI), cold compressive strength (CCS), and phase changes of the pellets were systematically studied. The results show that the RI of four kinds of pellets is greater than four in the temperature range of 800~950°C. For the magnetite pellets, at a fixed reduction temperature, the RSI increases and then gradually decreases, reaching a peak between 50 per cent and 80 per cent. Moreover, the RSI enhances with the increase of the reduction temperature. In general, the RI, RSI, and reduced CCS of the MR=0.09 pellets are better than those of the MR=0.4 pellets. For the hematite pellets, the maximum RSI decreases from 23 per cent to 17 per cent during hydrogen-rich reduction, while the compressive strength increases from 500 to 1070 Nꞏpellet-1. The main reason is that the glass phase generated by the increase of basicity adheres to the surface of hematite grains, hindering the contact between reducing gas and particles. As a result, the apparent activation energy is reduced, which is not conducive to the reduction process. In addition, the glassy phase attached to the hematite reduces the migration rate of Fe2+/Fe3+, resulting in a difference in the reduction expansion rate of hematite in the inner and outer layers of the pellet. Thus, concentric cracks are formed inside the pellets, the RSI increases and reduced CCS decreases.
