Surveys to establish the quantity and quality of coals available for metallurgical, industrial, and energy use, investigations to develop better mining methods, and studies aimed at improving the health and safety of those who mine the coal highlighted Bureau of Mines research and technologic work on coal in 1968. Also being developed are more efficient methods of coal preparation, transportation, storage, and utilization. Supplementing this effort are projects designed to assure minimum disturbance of land, water, and air resources. Research centers and laboratories of the Bureau of Mines are listed in appendix A. Publications released during 1968 are cited with the various projects and in appendix C. Organizations that cooperated in the work in various ways are cited in appendix B.

The operating principle of the classifying cyclone has been described often but some special aspects of the cyclone receive further clarification here. In addition, several uses of the classifiers are summarized and made clear by means of practical examples. In coal and ore washeries, the washing cyclone is widely used for the separation by specific gravity of sizes up to about 12 mm. This application has lately been extended to the separation by specific gravity of particles up to about 50 mm. This use makes special demands on the construction and wear resistance of the cyclone. The sieve bend, a development of the Dutch State Mines which is less well known than the hydrocy-clone, is dealt with at some length. The sieve bend is an apparatus designed for wet screening. Attention is given to the variables influencing the performance of the sieve bend. Hydrocyclones are now so widely applied that it would be difficult to find an industry not, directly or indirectly, using them or knowing how to use them since publications on this subject abound.1-3,5,9-11,13-15 However, because of the large number of variables influencing the operation of classifying cyclones, it is not entirely possible to calculate the results of this type of cyclone. Therefore, a number of lesser known variables will be discussed here along with some special applications of the classifying cyclone. FACTORS INFLUENCING CYCLONE CLASSIFICATION Shape of Particles: The shape of particles may cause a much coarser classification than the one expected, considering the sieve analysis and the cyclone dimensions chosen. This was clearly shown by feeding a mixture of spheres and disks in water into a cyclone. The spheres were 0.36 mm diam and the disks, 3 mm diam and 0.03 mm thick. These dimensions were chosen in order that the disks and spheres might have the same rates of fall under gravity. Both spheres and disks had a specific gravity of 1.05. The United States on a daily basis no consumes about 15MM barrels (2.38 x 106m3) of oil; 5MM (0.79 x 106 m3) of this is imported. This compares tai a daily consumption of 18MM (2.86 x 106 m3) in 1980 when we imported 8MM (1.27 x 106 m3). We are producing the 10MM barrels (1.59 x 106 m3 ) of conventional oil at home from what amounts to just 2% of our domestic energy reserves. Nearly 90% of our total domestic energy reserves occurs in solid forms such as coal, oil shale, and tar sands; this is more than enough to meet our needs for the next 100 years. Worldwide, oil shale is second only to coal as a potential source of energy and the U.S. has approximately one-half of the world oil shale reserves which average over 25 gallons per ton (10.43 x 10-2 L/kg). Since the United States has immense oil shale resources, including some of the richest in the world, and since oil shale produces a superior transportation fuel, it would seem logical that the U.S. would be prudently developing this domestic resource. Unfortunately, despite over 50 years of research and a number of false starts, there is not a commercial shale oil industry in place today. There are a number of recurring roadblocks which have hindered private industry's efforts to develop oil shale and we will look at some of these.

"This paper describes the benefits and disadvantages of fully autogenous grinding when compared to grinding with steel grinding media. The study is a real case study based on a low tonnage, high grade mining project in a remote location in a developing country. The study compares the capital and operating costs of using either SAG mill, Ball mill, Crusher (SABC) or fully autogenous (AG) grinding circuits and produces an economical analysis of the project for both options. The economics have been developed for the overall project, including mining, processing, environmental and the infrastructure as well as for the additional cost of constructing a fully autogenous grinding circuit instead of the original plan of a SAG Mill, Ball Mill circuit.The paper also describes the development of the autogenous grinding circuit at Outokumpu Oy, Pyhäsalmi mine. This experience was used to design the autogenous grinding circuit for the case study. Pyhäsalmi Concentrator has over 30 years of experience in operating autogenous grinding circuits and therefore provides a sound base for the new circuit design.INTRODUCTIONGrinding of ore using steel grinding media is currently the most commonly used method in the mining industry. Autogenous grinding, ore replaces iron media, is also common especially in Europe and Africa. Iron ore industry in North America uses autogenous grinding in primary and/or secondary stages extensively. In gold, copper and other base metal industries, autogenous grinding is not as common, although there are operations where pebble grinding is or has been used in the secondary grinding stage. There are many variations of autogenous grinding in use in the mining industry. These variations include different mill sizes, mill length to diameter ratios, ore lump sizes, screening and pebble crushing configurations."

As part of the Bureau of Mines health and safety research program, a short-range locator system, capable of locating miners who have become trapped following a mine accident, has been devised, The system consists of a lightweight, low-power radio transmitter incorporated into a miner's cap lamp battery and a directional receiver carried by rescuers. Prototype transmitters have been constructed, and the propagation of their signals has been investigated, The detectability of the signal in underground coal mines has also been investigated, This research indicates that a short-range location system would serve as an economical and practical means of locating miners from within the mine following an accident,

The rapid growth of the metallurgical, chemical, and allied industries on the Pacific coast just prior to and during the war caused a sudden increase in the demand for refractories, which was the immediate cause of a revival in interest in refractory clays available on the Pacific coast, particularly in the Pacific Northwest. Population increases and shortage of shipping facilities caused an increase in the amount of various ceramic materials and products used and produced on the Pacific coast, with accompanying demand for information regarding sources of clay. In an effort to supply part of this information, the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the College of Mines, University of Washington, started a program in 1944 to test the refractory and other properties of clays from seven Pacific Northwest deposits that had been drilled and sampled as part of the Bureau of Mines alumina from clay investigation. Figure 1 shows the location of these deposits.

The contiguous Kotre Basantpur and Pachmo (KBP) coal blocks in the Hazaribagh District of Jharkhand State in east India are being developed by Tata Steel Limited (Tata Steel) to supply coking coal to a new steel mill at Kalinganagar in Orissa.The planning challenges are many. The multiple coal seams range in thickness up to 6 m and extend to nearly 500 m depth, with dips up to 25¦ and highly variable quality. Several normal faults with throws up to 150 m intersect the deposit. There is little room for waste dumping on the lease, several large nalas (seasonal creeks) cross the blocks, and the KBP leases are not contiguous with Tata Steel's existing mining operations at West Bokaro. Geotechnical conditions, while not well defined at this stage, are largely unfavourable. There are several villages on the blocks, and extensive paddy fields. In 2009, Adelaide Mining Consultants Pty Ltd (AMC) completed a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for a production level of 8 Mt/a. A terrace mining system was proposed using 28 m3 hydraulic excavators and 185 t trucks working horizontal up-dip slices. Subsequently the viability of in-pit crushing and conveying was assessed, but the full results were not available for this paper.It is planned to extract a total of 147 Mt of raw coal at a strip ratio of 5.2 bank cubic metres per tonne (bcm/t). The planned maximum pit depth is over 300 m.The project includes a washery, a 2 + 25 MW fluidised bed power station to utilise all the coarse washery rejects, and a railway spur line to carry the washed coal to the railhead some 7 km distant.

"A new approach to measure process conditions in flotation cells is presented. Real scale flotation cells in a Zinc circuit are imaged using Outotec LevelSense sensors based on electrical resistance tomography. The latest results from long period plant tests show that the sensors together with FrothControl analysis give new information that correlates well with other process parameters. The sensors can compensate for electrical contact contamination using an automatic calibration technique and they are basically maintenance free. The results indicate that using the LevelSense sensors and FrothControl solution, the process control and optimization can be done automatically, stabilizing and improving the metallurgical performance of the flotation process.INTRODUCTIONThe froth flotation process is widely used in mineral industry for the separation of minerals from low-grade ore slurry. Different property parameters of froth and slurry could be measured to monitor and control the flotation process: air bubble size distribution, flow dynamics, thickness of the froth bed, amount of solids in the froth, etc. Some techniques already exist that can be utilized in studying these important parameters on-line. Examples of the techniques are the high-speed video imaging, simple conductivity probes, ultrasound techniques, floats and pressure transducers (Maldonado et al., 2008). These techniques, however, often suffer from some limitations. For example, the video imaging only gives information from the surface of the froth, simple conductivity probes suffer from contamination and the floats may get stuck and therefore do not give reliable signal for process control and optimization."

The widely accepted concept of mineral resources are that they are finite - mining therefore being intrinsically unsustainable. Yet the modern global mining industry continues to grow production at strong rates - how can this be? In reality, mining is a complex industry, starting with exploration, development, operations and then rehabilitation and closure. A recent major study of Australia has shown that for most mineral commodities, exploration continues to find new deposits, or expand resources at existing mines. In parallel, however, there are a number of key 'mega-trends' which are growing in their importance - declining ore grades (or quality), increasing tailings and waste rock volumes, the need for deeper mining, more refractory ore types, increasing energy inputs and higher unit energy costs, increasing pollution issues and, of course, not to forget greenhouse gas emissions issues. This paper will present a detailed case study of the ultimate sustainability of the Australian mining industry - showing long term historical data sets on ore grades, waste volumes and economic resources and placing these trends in light of major twenty-first century issues such as energy supplies (especially Peak Oil), climate change and existing and emerging land use conflicts (eg agriculture versus mining). Australia is a critical case study in the sustainability of mining, as it is a major global exporter of numerous commodities, and this is expected to continue to underpin the ongoing industrialisation of countries such as China and India. The ultimate question begs - can Australia actually meet this fundamental challenge, or will our resources run out, or will we be constrained by environmental issues such as climate change, land use or perhaps water? Rather than a mere optimist's or pessimist's view, this paper will present a range of hard data which underpins the debate about the sustainability of mining this century: ultimately, we cannot assume that the patterns of past mining will continue to work in the future. The sustainability of mining continues to hang in a precarious balance.

"Modern underground mining is becoming more complex and geotechnically challenging. The engineer uses numerical, analytical, and data-driven methods (empirical and/or experimental) or their combination to overcome these challenges. Each method has its advantages and disadvantages. Nevertheless, given the amount of innovation and experience involved in developing each of these techniques, it will be prudent to use all their benefits rather than favoring one technique over the other. Pillars are the most important support element in an underground mine. A holistic geo-mechanical solution needs to be determined to design mine pillars using a proper sequence and exact mix of the three methods. A combination of these methods, in sync, can encompass the several advantages of the three methods while eliminating their disadvantages. This paper presents a conceptual three-tier solution to the pillar design problem, to improve its design pedigree, using a proper combination of numerical, analytical, and data-driven methods. At the focus of this proposed method lies the Ground Reaction Curve (GRC) concept.INTRODUCTIONAlthough the stability analysis of underground excavations is a challenging problem, its understanding has improved tremendously over recent years through the use of improved tools and techniques. The trial and error method was replaced with more scientific methods like the empirical and analytical methods that are still in use today. Empirical methods were developed based on large data sets obtained from experiments and observations (e.g., coal pillar strength equations). Analytical methods were developed based on mechanical understanding of stability (e.g., safety factor for vertical pillar loading, Convergence Confinement Method). Improvement in computing power and numerical techniques led to the development of several numerical methods (e.g., finite difference, finite element) suitable for geo-mechanical analysis.Each of these methods have certain advantages and limitations. Nevertheless, the user is often puzzled over the proper method selection and over the proper sequence of using them. This exercise becomes more challenging when different methods are combined, where, for example, one has to estimate the pillar strength based on empirical equations (e.g., Mark-Bieniawski coal pillar strength equation), determine the factor of safety based on an analytical approach (e.g., tributary area load divided by pillar strength), and analyze pillar-strata interactions using numerical analysis (see Esterhuizen, Mark, and Murphy, 2010b).Challenges increase when current pillar design methods are designed as passive structures to balance the fixed dead weight of the overburden. This classic suspension design approach does not recognize the self-stabilizing capacity of the overburden (Frith and Reed, 2018). A practical solution to address these issues is the use of numerical analysis. However, one should always keep in mind that the numerical modelling approach may have certain practical limitations."

The purpose of this report is to describe the work accomplished by Mine Safety Appliances Company under Contract No. H0110845. This contract required the design, installation and testing of a permissible mine surveillance and communication system for the USBM Bruceton experimental mine facility. While much of the design and operational detail of this system can be drawn from the instruction manuals delivered with the equipment, some of it will be repeated here in Volume I for the sake of clarity, but the principal objective will be to report on overall system and subsystem performance and to suggest design alternatives for future consideration. Details of the overall system design will be found in Volume II of this report.

Pile driving started October 29, 1993 and was completed on January 27, 1994. Field work included driving piling from ground surface at one site and at or near proposed footing elevations for the remainder. Piles were driven to specified tip elevations or the elevations directed by the Project Manager. In an attempt to address what installation technique(s) performed the best, several methods were used, including varied predrilled depths, open ended piles, closed ended piles, and the use of both impact and vibratory hammers. Piles were driven closed ended where possible to study the feasibility of this option to reduce construction costs associated with pile cleanout. Piles were driven to different depths to measure capacity variations. The 24-inch (610 mm) diameter piling were driven in one piece while the 42-inch (1.07 m) diameter piling was driven in two segments. A total of 79 piles were driven for the four sites, 74 of the 24-inch (610 mm) diameter and 5 of the 42-inch (1.07 m) diameter. Various hammers were used to determine which hammers provided viable solutions to the potential problems anticipated in the design phase. Hammer selection was based on the driveability studies. Equipment included a 175 ton (1.56 MN) crane, support crane for pile stabilization, crane mounted auger drill, offshore leads, Delmag D30-32, D46-32, and D62-22 diesel hammers, an HPSI 2005 single acting hydraulic hammer, a Foster IHC S-90 double acting hydraulic hammer and a Kencho VM2-25000AII vibratory hammer with the weights set to produce 17,500 pound-inch (1.98 kN-m) of eccentric moment.

The deposit has been exploited for Mn oxide and carbonate since 1916. Known reserves of MnO, however, are almost depleted and the survival of the mine will depend on the exploitation of the carbonate. Kriging, inverse distance weighting (IDW) and cross-sectional methods have been applied to the evaluation of the carbonate resources and reconciliation of the estimates obtained shows that kriging and IDW give almost identical block values. A comparison using conditional probability indicates that there is virtually no difference between the global reserve estimates derived from the cross-sectional and kriging methods. The physical causes of these similarities are highlighted and the problems of dealing with multimodal distributions are discussed together with the difficulties of semi-variogram modelling

As far as is known at the present time, important ore occurrences at Mount Isa are restricted to the Urquhart Shale. These occur at Mount Isa itself, and some 13 miles north along strike at the Northern Leases.The primary silver-lead-zinc and copper orebodies occur as adjacent but discretc entities in lithologieally distinct host rocks. The copper orebodies occur in an envelope of "Silica Dolomite", whereas the silver-lead zinc orebodies occur in shale typical of the Urquhart Shale in general.At both Mount Isa and the Northern Leases, secondary lead orebodies occur at thc surface representing primary stratiform silver-lead-zinc sulphide accumulations in the fresh rocks at depth.Secondary copper orebodies are known only at Mount Isa, where they have formed in favourable environments, but unlike the secondary lead orebodies, not in the positions of the former primary mineralization that gave rise to them. The secondary copper is localized in shale remote from the point where the copper was released into solution by weathering. It was derived from very low grade fracture fillings and disseminations of chalcopyrite in the outcropping or suboutcropping crest of the "Silica Dolomite".Primary silver-lead-zinc orebodies arc oxidized without significant transport or secondary enrichment, but secondary copper orebodies arc characterized by considerable transport and extreme secondary enrichment.The original water table stood at approximately 1,150 ft (mine datum) and for the majority of the mine area controlled the base of complete oxidation fairly closely.An oxidized zone approximately 175 ft deep is general in the Urquhart Shale.Structures affecting ground conditions have influenced oxidation and leaching of the silver-lcad-zinc orebodies, and have had effects vital to the formation of secondary copper orebodies.

"A computerized cost estimating program developed with the use of the Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheet program has produced dramatic savings in preparing estimates for operating costs, equipment fleet size and manpower requirements for underground mines.The program is used by Dynatec to support its consulting engineering projects, particularly feasibility studies. The 'first principles' approach is used to prepare detailed estimates under direct labour and supplies categories and maintenance costs for each mining operation . User notes have been developed to guide the estimator and ensure appropriate consideration is given to the specifics of the particular mine.A typical case history is illustrated and the ease by which alternatives and sensitivity analyses can be prepared is demonstrated. Operating companies have access to historical cost data and generally use this for preparing estimates. Consulting engineers do not usually have direct access to such information and must rely on mining companies (the present or previous clients); publications (text books, equipment manufacturers manuals, CMJ reference manual, etc.); annual reports (applicable to public companies); previous studies (to be used with caution as conditions change from mine to mine); and first principles (the subject of this paper), for cost information:Definition of First PrinciplesA first principles approach to cost estimating considers individual primary work elements of an operation. Quantities of work items are developed from the mine plans, production rates, geographic and physical layouts etc. The knowledgeable estimator, assisted by experienced operations personnel, can assign appropriate resources (equipment, labour, supplies and services) to each work element and establish productivities. Completion of the cost estimate is then largely arithmetic."

Newmont Gold Company's Mill No. 4 is located along the Carlin trend, about 25 miles North of Carlin, Nevada. The plant consists of a primary grinding circuit using a 7.2 m (22 ft) diameter by 2.6 m (8 ft) long semi-autogenous mill along with a 2.3 m (7 ft) diameter cone crusher. Secondary grinding is performed in a 4.8 m (14.5 ft) diameter by 9.2 m (28 ft) long overflow ball mill in closed circuit with a set of 66 cm (26 in) diameter cyclones. The ground product is fed to a typical carbon-in-leach gold leach circuit. The grinding/crushing circuit operation and control scheme are the topics of this paper.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation.The recent and active magmatic arcs of eastern Papua New Guinea (PNG) and the Solomon Islands are well endowed with sulfide mineralisation and include deposits such as Ladolam, Panguna and Solwara 1. The majority of the mineral systems in this belt are younger than four million years old, with some deposits remaining active to the present day as exemplified by active hydrothermal systems on the island of Lihir. The geodynamic setting that led to the formation of these deposits is still unresolved, with, for example, both the Pacific and Solomon Sea plates considered responsible for the formation of the Ladolam deposit on the island of Lihir under different models. In order to understand and characterise the formation of south-west Pacific mineral deposits, we must first reconstruct the complex geodynamic evolution of the region. New kinematic reconstructions show that while mineral systems in eastern PNG and the Solomon Islands are hosted within a single arc related to subduction at the New Britain and San Cristobal trenches, variable and discrete geodynamic settings exist within both the upper and lower plates throughout this region, which give rise to distinct mineralised corridors. Most notably, this region is host to: the Solwara 1 deposit, which occurs within a major transtensional corridor in the eastern Bismarck Sea the Ladolam deposit (Lihir), which is interpreted to have formed above but in relation to tearing of the subducting slab the Panguna deposit, which is related to structure in the subducting slab marginal to the actively spreading Woodlark Basin.An evaluation of the nature and variability of these diverse geodynamic settings through time can provide us with a better understanding of the relationship between the active south-west Pacific magmatic arcs and mineral deposit formation. The fly-in-fly-out (FIFO) mining model has significant implications for the industry as it plays an important role in fulfilling the economic, social and workforce needs of the contemporary mining industry. It has increasingly been adopted in countries such as Canada and Australia, but is the current nature of the FIFO model challenging the place women have achieved in the mining workforce? Research in the mining and oil and gas industries reveals that major sources of stress for fly-in-fly-out mining workers are the times of parting and of reunion, the challenges in defining roles within the family, parenting, and conflict between spouses over the use of the leave time and money. So how are women in the industry coping with the FIFO schedules and consequent intermittent relationship with families and partners? How is the mining industry adapting to recruit and maintain female employees in FIFO operations? This paper describes an exploratory study conducted in Canada, which intended to provide some initial insights that might help us answer the questions above. There are several inferences made from this exploratory study. It is clear that FIFO poses significant challenges for both female and male workers. It is largely seen as rigid, extremely challenging for employees with young families and workers who are single mothers, and it is generally incompatible with starting a family and caring for small children. FIFO creates severe stress on relationships and on workers psychological well-being. It seems to be indeed harder for women, since they are often in lower paying positions and therefore have less financial reward for the FIFO lifestyle. On the other hand, FIFO creates the opportunity for young women, including Aboriginal women, to jump-start their careers, as well as opportunities for mature women to work while pursuing other personal interests during their time off. This paper concludes with recommendations to improve the FIFO system in order to increase the ability of mining companies to hire and retain women

Pin Piles are small diameter high capacity drilled and grouted piles also called minipiles or micropiles. They are ideal for building foundations on sites with poor ground conditions, sensitive surroundings, restricted vertical clearance, or difficult access. They are also well suited to foundation underpinning, arresting ground movements, and increasing the capacity of existing foundations. The major factors for selection of Pin Piles are reviewed; drilling, grouting, and design fundamentals are summarized; and a major case history is presented for the underpinning of the 43 story elevator core at the recently opened Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, NV.
