The mine of the Eureka Standard Consolidated dining Co. is at Dividend, Utah, in the Tintic mining district. It is operated under the same management and controlled by the Antic Standard Mining Co.; the two properties adjoin each other. The Eureka Standard is worked through a vertical shaft; the ore is mined by a stringer-set-and-fill method. One hundred and thirty men were employed in April 1933. The normal daily tonnage is 100 tons; the ore is shipped to the smelter at Garfield, Utah.

Many years ago, a relationship was established between dust inhalation and pneumoconiosis. Since then, various government agencies have regulated crystalline and amorphous forms of silica material in the workplace. In 1987, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified crystalline silica as a probable carcinogen. With this listing, crystalline silica became a regulated substance under the Hazard Communication Standard. The minerals and chemicals industries have responded in various ways. They have: • developed worker and user training programs and literature; • labeled products with appropriate warnings; • continued to implement dust reduction programs; and • developed meaningful epidemiological studies of workers. • begun development of reliable analytical methods for measuring crystalline silica at the 0.1 % threshold level; Background Silicosis historically has been the major health hazard resulting from exposure to crystalline silica. Silicosis is the scarring of the lung from excessive exposure to crystalline silica. It has been recognized as an occupational disease for more than 2000 years, since early Greek physicians noted the respiratory problems of miners, stonecutters, and quarrymen who were exposed to excessive quantities of mineral dust. During the industrial revolution, the incidence of the disease was greatly increased by the use of machinery that increased dust levels. Montana Tech is located in the historic mining town of Butte, MT and is adjacent to the Orphan Boy mine. This abandoned underground mine will be the heat source for a down-hole heat exchanger (DHE)/heat pump system. The mine was abandoned in the 1950?s and has since filled with water to within approximately 30 m of the surface. The shaft is composed of a 245 m vertical shaft connected with horizontal crosscut drifts at 60 m and 150 m below the water level that connect to a large stope with approximately 1250 million liters of water at a consistent 75-78°F temperature. The intent is to build this heating system to augment or fully heat a newly built 2,000 m2 building on the Montana Tech campus. As designed the system uses ?off-the-shelf? parts making the basic configuration straightforward with the exception of the DHE?s which need to be placed into the vertical shaft. Because there is little or no examples of placing the heat exchangers in a vertical shaft, the primary focus of this work was to model the heat exchanger placement and configuration in the vertical shaft such that thermal currents develop between the stope and vertical shaft in, via the horizontal crosscut drifts, in order to move the water and thereby provide the required energy. This study includes the modeling of water flow, temperature profiles, and the heat contribution from the surrounding rock walls.

It is no need to say that exploitation of industrial minerals has a close relation to development of the industries related. In the first stage, a small scale manufactures were initiated in areas producing some main raw material minerals. China and cement manufactures, for example, were established depending on the local occurrence of raw materials such as kaolin and limestone without exception. That is, the industrial development is greatly influenced by the local production of the raw materials in the stage. With the development of industrial technology, various kinds of raw material minerals are explored to meet the demands of industries in the second stage. New materials become indispensable, and low-grade raw material minerals, which were left as useless, are developed as useful materials. In the stage, the development of raw material minerals is accelerated by that of industrial technology related. However, industries mainly rely on domestic production of the min raw material minerals.

"The Louvicourt Mine located near Val d’Or, Quebec has been in operation since 1994. It produces copper and zinc concentrates. The tailings generated from the ore processing operations have a strong net acid generating potential. Louvicourt Mine, a grass root project, was designed for closure with the best available technology at the time of design. In order to inhibit short and long time acid potential generation, sub-aqueous disposal was selected at the design stage. Given the fact that disposal in a natural lake was ruled out up front for obvious reasons related to loss of natural habitat and risks of permitting delays, a man made facility built with dams was planned. This mine includes therefore the first fully man-made sub-aqueous tailings disposal facility built in Canada. The requirement of using sub-aqueous disposal had serious implications on the placement of tailings. This tailings facility located about 9 km from the mine site has been selected based on the available natural confinement, the favorable foundation and hydrogeological conditions. This paper describes the site and the design criteria that were used. A presentation is also made on the placement technique to maximize storage and its impact on the operation of the basin. The performance of the basin, the dams and the decant structures is reviewed.Résumé : La mine Louvicourt, située près de Val d’Or, Québec est opérationnelle depuis 1994. Elle produit des concentrés de cuivre et de zinc. Les résidus générés par les opérations de traitement du minerai possèdent un fort potentiel net de génération d’acide. Le parc à résidus de la mine Louvicourt, implanté dans un milieu naturel intact, fut doté dès sa conception initiale de la meilleure technologie de fermeture disponible à l’époque, soit la déposition sous couverture aqueuse et ce, dans le but de bloquer le potentiel de génération d’acide à court et à long terme des résidus. Etant donné que la déposition dans un lac naturel fut mise de côté dès le départ pour des raisons évidentes reliées à la perte d’habitats naturels et au risque d’introduire des délais dans l’émission des permis, un étang artificiel délimité par des digues a été conçu. Cette mine fut donc la première au Canada à être dotée d’une installation anthropique de disposition des résidus sous une pleine couverture aqueuse. L’exigence d’une déposition sous couverture aqueuse a eu des implications sur le mode de mise en place des résidus. L’emplacement de l’installation de gestion des résidus a été choisi en un lieu situé à environ 9 km du concentrateur sur la base du confinement naturel disponible et des conditions hydrogéologiques et géotechniques favorables. Cet article décrit le site et les critères de conception utilisés. Une présentation est faite sur la technique de mise en place utilisée pour maximiser l’entreposage et son impact sur l’opération du bassin. La performance du bassin, des digues et des structures de décantation est également revue."

Bulk materials handling systems are extensively used in the mining and minerals industry, where a fairly high incidence of structural failure is experienced, notwithstanding design compliance with appropriate standards. A number of case studies are explored to demonstrate how insufficient controls or protection systems have contributed to structural failures on mobile bulk handling equipment. The importance of design integration across engineering disciplines is highlighted. The revision of ISO 5049-1 (1994) is proposed to provide specific rules and guidelines pertaining to machine protection systems. It is further recommended that the structural design engineer of the original equipment manufacturer(OEM) fulfils a more prominent role during the final acceptance and handover of mobile bulk handling equipment, with specific reference to protection systems.

"7.1. INTRODUCTIONThis chapter addresses the joint venture and examines a number of general concepts of the joint venture relationship. Chapter 8 looks at some specific concepts related to the provisions of a joint venture agreement, which are equally applicable to a shareholders’ agreement or other contractual relationship. The term “joint venture” is used because the author is a common law solicitor (a matter of convenience for which apologies are offered to civil law readers), but it should be noted that, in many aspects, the legal structure of an entity is irrelevant. It is the relationship of the parties, be they venturers or shareholders, that is important, and the areas of concern are surprisingly similar (except for terminology).The details of the joint venture relationship and agreement could fill several books. Accordingly, this chapter and the next focus on selected topics that appear to have caused problems or confusion or to be the basis for disputes. And remember that, although the following discussion is in the context of a joint venture, many of the comments apply, either directly or indirectly, to virtually any common undertaking and the agreement defining it.For interest’s sake, this chapter starts with a summary of some of the earlier types of agreements and arrangements that have evolved into the joint venture agreement of today in Canada, the philosophy of their format, and the reasons for their demise.7.2. EVOLUTION OF THE CANADIAN JOINT VENTUREThe Early DaysMuch of the opening up of Canada’s north is due to exploration for and development of mines. The early discoverers were relatively free to roam and explore at will and, if they were fortunate enough to find something, they dealt with the appropriate government to acquire exploitation rights. The early interests lay in gold or silver. Workings were small, usually worked by the owner alone or with only a couple of helpers to extract the native gold or silver. If the owner wanted to move on, he could sell his property outright and use his stake to look elsewhere.As logging and mining camps were opened, the development of better roads and railways made access easier. Entrepreneurs saw the opportunity to make money by assembling large parcels of land and working them as a single operation. In order to do this, some owners who were not ready to sell out had to be convinced to do so through more attractive offers"

This paper presents a case history of design, prediction, probe and production pile driving monitoring, loading tests and installation of over 3,300 prestressed concrete piles for a building complex consisting of 12, 5- and 6-story over parking buildings. The project was recently completed in three-phases over a span of 4 years. The subsoil conditions were explored by performing 25, Standard Penetration Test (SPT) borings throughout the site. Various types of driven pile foundations were considered and following an evaluation of high structural loads and site-specific constraints such as variable depth of bearing layer of Florida limestone and quality of clay and limestone layers, a prestressed concrete pile support system was selected as the most economical and effective foundation approach. The building foundations were designed for a pile capacity of 353 kN (40 tons) in compression, 45 kN (5 tons) in lateral capacity for a deflection of 0.64 cm (0.25 in.), and 133 kN (15 tons) in uplift capacity. The axial and lateral allowable pile capacity and lengths were predicted using SPT91 and LPILE computer programs, which are generally used in Florida. The validation of these capacities was derived from 144 probe piles and performance of 12 pile loading tests on selected probe piles. Prior to installation of probe or production piles, a termination criterion was established using 1-dimensional wave equation analyses in addition to the design pile embedment requirement. The predicted pile capacities compared very well with the capacities from the loading tests on probe piles. This information was effectively utilized as part of the overall quality control program to install a total of 4,186 prestressed concrete piles (including 144 probe piles) in different building areas across the project site to depths ranging from 8 to 21 m (25 to 90 ft) below existing ground elevation as part of foundation support system. This engineered, monitored, and tested foundation solution provided an effective and satisfactory basis for completion and approval of the foundation work for this 12, 5- and 6-story over parking building complex. A recent reconnaissance has indicated that all the building foundations are performing satisfactorily.

The methane emission rate into an underground mine environment from overburden strata during longwall mining is impacted by reservoir and geomechanical characteristics of the coal measure rocks in the overlying strata, as well as the presence of any coal seam. The reservoir characteristics and how they change during mining potentially affect the performance of gob gas ventholes, which consequently impacts the efficiency of methane control in the mining environment. This study presents reservoir and elastic properties of coal measure rocks in the Lower Monongahela Group in Greene County, southwestern Pennsylvania, of the Northern Appalachian Basin. Since the source of methane in this region from underground mining is located between the Sewickley coal and the Pittsburgh coal, a specific emphasis was given to this interval. Core analyses were performed in the laboratory to determine rock porosity and permeability. Geophysical logging data (gamma, density, sonic) obtained from two exploration boreholes were used for evaluating formation boundaries, shale contents, log porosities, and geomechanical properties of formations. Permeability was also calculated using density-log data and empirical equations and compared with laboratory measurements and slug tests performed in isolated intervals of boreholes. The results presented in this study can be used as data sources for reservoir studies related to the production and control of methane.

This research was part of an effort to investigate means of reestablishing non¬polluted hydrological systems in areas where surface mining directly impacts shallow ground-water resources. Chemically undesirable overburden material was selectively backfilled with the intent that it would be below the future root zone, be above the reestablished aquifer, and would not be leached as a result of deep percolation. After 2 years the buried material remains above the spoil aquifer and below the maximum rooting depth. Unsaturated water flow from the land surface to the buried material occurred during wet climatological periods. No significant leaching of buried material was observed, however. Overburden sample contamination from drill stem joint grease with Pb, Zn, and Cu additives caused substantial error regarding DTPA extractable trace metals. A grease with teflon and talc additives was recommended for use in future sampling programs. DTPA extractable trace elements in overburden material had no statistical relationship to post-mine ground-water quality. Overburden columns leached with water produced leachates comparable to overburden and spoil ground-water trace metal quality. A depositional model described the Rosebud Coal overburden as a fluvial system with distinct units of sand, silt, and clay, with distinct chemical properties. Physical and chemical characteristics of the model were comparable to the in situ geochemical system, a relationship which may aid in locating overburden materials unsuitable for reclamation.

This paper describes the tower foundation design and construction experience for the 345kV Youngheung marine transmission line, which has been in commercial operation in Korea since July, 2004. This transmission line was designed and constructed to meet the rapidly increasing power demands of metropolitan areas and supply stable, bulk electric power from the Yonghung thermal power plant into metropolitan areas. This transmission line passes over the west sea, Lake Sihwa and over land. In order to successfully complete this project, and to safely support the tower during severe maritime conditions, several types of tower foundation such as Pad and Chimney foundation, Pier (Cylindrical) foundation, R.C.D foundation, Jacket pile foundation and Steel pipe pile + concrete mat foundation were developed and used. As the world?s first and longest marine transmission line, the 345kV Yonghung marine transmission line operates successfully, thanks to several high-tech civil engineering technologies and KEPCO?s accumulated experience.

"1 INTRODUCTION Around the world, there is a demand for larger structures, tall buildings and large bridges. While good footing design is important for all structures, it is even more important in the case of large structures. Recent experience with footing design for tall buildings (e.g. Burj Al Alam development and Nakheel Tower in Dubai, the Gate of Kuwait in Kuwait, the City Centre Project in Bahrain and Eureka Tower and Freshwater Place in Melbourne) has shown the benefits of investing in footing planning, design and construction (Haberfield, 2011, Poulos and Bunce, 2007). The footing systems for most of these projects include the use of deep bored piles or barrettes (piles of rectangular cross-section). Many use piled rafts where the piles, while acting to support the load, are primarily used to reduce settlements. A clear understanding of the factors controlling the behaviour of the footing system is needed to enable a good engineering design to be achieved. This starts with a sound understanding of the ground characteristics and individual pile performance, including adequate collection of data and testing. The best footing solution can then be found using recent improvements in data collection and analytical techniques, complex and highly capable computer-based models and the availability of high speed computers. This paper focuses on the axial performance of deep bored piles socketed into rock – both their individual performance and their performance as part of a larger footing system. Recent research and construction practice is discussed. In practically all cases, serviceability conditions control the behaviour of the footings. Methods of establishing the parameters for input into sophisticated computer programs are described. Application of the methods to case studies is included and it is shown that the behaviour of individual piles can be closely predicted. These developments lead to lower construction costs, better constructability and shortened construction time because of the better understanding of footing behaviour. 2 FACTORS AFFECTING PERFORMANCE OF FOOTINGS ON ROCK For a typical pile-supported footing, it is necessary to consider both individual pile, pile group and raft performance. These require consideration of the behaviour of the ground immediately beneath the surface raft or footing, along the pile shaft, and at and beneath the pile toe (Figure 1). Immediately beneath the surface raft or footing, the important factors are strength for bearing capacity and stiffness for settlement and interaction effects. Along the pile shaft, of most interest are strength for bearing, excavatability and stability; stiffness for settlement and interaction effects; geology and permeability for pile stability and, most importantly, pile shaft resistance. At the pile toe all the above factors for the pile shaft are present and in addition the pile end bearing is of interest. Below the toe, stiffness for pile settlement is important to at least a depth of twice the building width."

A new strain of Thiobacil/us ferrooxidans (SPK I) has been isolated which has a higher copper to iron release ratio (2.04) than the standard T ferrooxidans (CPBI) (1.12). The diminished iron oxidizing ability enables almost quantitative release of copper (93 per cent) from a chalcopyrite-rich concentrate without interference by iron reprecipitation. In a single batch leach, Bougainville copper concentrate yielded 9.3 grams/litre soluble copper from a 4 per cent w/v suspension in 100 days at 32°C.Solvent extraction recovery of soluble copper is recommended as a final step in a leaching process.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report describes the results from an in-mine investigation of an alternative longwall gate road design. The coal mine operator modified the pillar layout (reversed the location of the big and small pillars) in a portion of a three-entry longwall gate road area. The modified pillar layout was an attempt to reduce stress and, subsequently, stress-related ground control problems (cutter roof and dynamic floor heave events) in the tailgate region during "second-panel" mining. The results from borehole pressure cells installed in the modified gate road area showed that the ground pressures in the panel edge and adjacent small pillar were significantly reduced during second-panel mining compared with ground pressures experienced in the typical pillar layout gate road areas. The reduced stress levels around the tailgate entry adjacent to the second panel, as compared with the tailgate stress levels with the typical pillar arrangement, contributed to improved tailgate ground conditions in the test pillar zone.

Recent exploration has identified the presence of detrital iron deposits (DIDs) associated with banded iron formation (BIF) units in the north-west of the Congo Craton, Gabon. The regional geology comprises a complex of granitoids and gneisses assigned to the Archaean Chaillu Complex, within which older slivers of lower amphibolite-grade greenstones are preserved including muscovite-biotite-garnet-bearing felsic schist, amphibolite and BIF. These units are typically overlain by several metres of residuum comprising colluvium, eluvium and duricrust. The residuum is overlain by a regionally extensive loess cover from 2 m to 10 m thick.The DIDs occur within the weathered residuum as mostly unconsolidated gravels with lesser canga (CAN) duricrust draped over deeply weathered hematite. Head grades are in the range of 45 to 52 per cent Fe. Fresh BIF, located from 30 to 50 m below surface, is comprised of magnetite-quartz±amphibole. The detrital iron gravels are comprised of rod- and plate-shaped clasts of hematite (martite)-maghemite-goethite composition, in a ferruginous sand to clay-sized matrix. The DID form ridges and plateaus that coincide with magnetic highs defined using high-resolution ground magnetic surveys.The field relations and petrography indicate that the detrital iron accumulations are the result of weathering (including enrichment) and erosion of primary BIF. This includes removal of quartz, further oxidation and re-cementation of BIF to form ferruginous caprock. This cap and the in situ oxidised BIF were subsequently disaggregated and liberated, and further weathered to form the detrital iron accumulations.Metallurgical test work on bulk detrital iron samples has shown this material can be upgraded to lump and fines iron ore products with grades of 62 to 65 per cent Fe using simple scrubbing and wet screening, followed by dense media separation of the -1 mm fraction, with overall mass yields from 75 to 85 per cent. "CANMET’s research into underground coal mining is primarily conducted at the Cape Breton Coal Research Laboratory (CBCRL), established in 1981 to conduct safety research in underground coal mines. Located close to Canada’s largest underground coal producer, in the Sydney Coalfield of Nova Scotia, CBCRL’s program also includes the two western underground coal operations. CBCRL is a relatively small laboratory with a staff of thirteen — eight professionals and five support staff — with an annual budget of over $1 million. In order to maintain effective research response, flexibility is key and staff are increasingly working in project teams, crossing traditional section ties and also drawing from specialist expertise elsewhere within CANMET.CBCRL’s research activities have had a substantial impact on the Canadian underground coal mining industry, particularly in Cape Breton. CBCRL contributed to Cape Breton Development Corporation’s (CBDC’s) threefold reduction in lost-time accidents in the 1980s. Also, in the last four years alone, CBCRL’s work has enabled CBDC to save over $17 million in improved utilisation of reserves and cost savings. The work embraces the three traditional areas of mine environment, strata mechanics and mining technologies, however the current direction has been strongly influenced by recent external and internal factors. It is timely to review progress and recent directions."

Although ASARCO Incorporated, the only domestic producer, had terminated copper smelting operations and associated recovery of byproduct arsenic trioxide at Tacoma, WA, in 1985, it shipped small quantities of both trioxide and metal from its remaining stocks in 1986. Imports for consumption of arsenic trioxide increased significantly, owing to increased demand for arsenical wood preservatives and the decrease in domestic shipments of trioxide. Prices remained unchanged throughout the year. Development of gallium arsenide integrated circuits, important in advanced military and commercial electronics circuitry, continued to gain momentum during 1986. Domestic Data Coverage.-Shipments of small amounts of arsenic trioxide and metal from remaining stocks by Asarco were reported voluntarily to the Bureau of Mines.
