A variety of environmental financial assurance instruments are in use across the globe. This paper reviews some of the more common forms currently used in New Zealand, Canada, USA and Australia. In order to be effective, the form of assurance instrument selected needs to be aligned with a countryÆs specific environmental objectives, geography and political climates and also allow for a healthy investment climate. Industry and Government both have a strong interest in ensuring financial assurance criteria meet these objectives.   Recently Golder Associates have been involved in financial assurance assessments for various mining and quarrying companies across the South Island. Multiple stakeholders and regulatory agencies can make the setting of effective and fair financial assurance criteria a complex exercise for both regulatory agencies and industry.  The author relates experience gained in assessing financial assurance under current New Zealand legislation (RMA, 1991), effectively dealing with issues such as ôdouble bondingö and overviews potential approaches to dealing with transitional issues for historic and existing operating mine sites.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines developed an experimental method to evaluate the relative effectiveness of water additives on the extinguishment of coal fires. The experiments were conducted in the fire zone of the multiple-entry section of the Bureau's Bruceton Experimental Mine. Four-hundred-pound Pittsburgh Seam coalbeds were ignited and allowed to burn until well-developed fires were achieved. Extinguishing agent-water solutions were then applied to the fires, and the quantity required to extinguish the fires was compared with the quantity of water alone required to extinguish similar fires. A 20% diammonium phosphate-water solution required an average of 5.8 gal to extinguish the coal fires, while two commercially available additive-water solutions required an average of 8.1 and 8.0 gal, respectively. The average amount of water required to extinguish the fires was 7.4 gal. An analysis of covariance, using the thermal energy of the coalbed to quantify the fire at the time of extinguishment, showed that the diammonium phosphate-water solution was slightly more effective at extinguishing these coal fires than water alone, and the two commercially available additive-water solutions were statistically equivalent to water alone.

Soft laminated iron ore (SLO) having a higher hematite content and Martite goethite iron ore (MGO) having a higher goethite content were subjected to detailed characterization and beneficiation. The present research was designed to investigate if these abundant, low-grade ores can be enriched adequately using standard industry techniques. No significant enrichment of the ores using jigging operation on the coarse (-3,200 +595 mm) size fraction could be achieved. Good liberation was only attained in the 150 to 300 mm particle size range in both cases. Desliming enriches the ground ores significantly. The effect of the feed size on the separation efficiencies of the ground ores were studied using flowing-film concentration on a Wilfley table. Better enrichment is obtained in the case of 150-mm sized feed by tabling. The grade of SLO is improved from 56.14% to 66.51% Fe, while the Fe content of MGO is enriched from 55.16% to 65.83%. Substantial rejection of alumina and silica is also achieved. Due to the friable nature of MGO and the higher goethite content in it, the loss of Fe in the form of ultrafines is greater in this case compared to that of SLO.

Rock deformational structures in a deep mine were analyzed by petrofabric techniques to learn (1) the relative magnitude and direction of the principal stresses involved in tectonic deformations prior to mining, (2) the preferred orientation of rock planar discontinuities which define rock anistropy prior to mining, and (3) the relationship of mining-induced rock failure to inherent rock stresses and inherent rock anisotropy. Rock fabric elements used for petrofabric analysis consisted of bedding planes, faults, joints, fractures, foliation, sericite plane (001), quartz axis [0001], quartz deformation lamellae, and microfractures. Structures and structural symmetries from different areas within the mine and from different scales of observation were compared to learn the nature of rock anisotropy and the orientation of the principal stresses defined by rock deformations. Analysis of such fabric as regional and macroscopic faults, b-c joints, quartz [0001], sericite (001), and microfractures, indicate that during the epochs of tectonic deformation, the maximum and minimum principal stresses were horizontally oriented and acted along northwest and northeast axes, respectively. This condition of regional stress appears to have continued during folding and the associated period of faulting. The most recent tectonic deformation represents a rotation of the minimum principal stresses into a vertical position, as shown by the development of a tensile joint system, quartz deformation lamellae, and microfractures. Good interscale correlation and statistical homogeneity of tectonic fabric indicate a stress field homogeneity in this area during tectonic deformation. Rock physical anisotropy is genetically associated with tectonic fabric and consists of preferentially oriented planar discontinuities intersecting along a nearly vertical axis. The mining-induced deformations were correlated with the inherent rock anisotropy which either directly controls or greatly affects their development. This phase of rock deformation shows a greater degree of stress field heterogeneity than was the case with tectonic deformations This is explained as a result of nonconfinement afforded by underground openings and the increase in ground stresses due to mining activity"

To improve SO2 emission compliance, pyrrhotite from Sudbury copper-nickel ores is being depressed with DETA. To understand the mechanism of depression, the role of complexing in controlling metal-ion activation of pyrrhotite was investigated. DETA was found to remove Cu and Ni ions but leave hydrophilic ferric species on the pyrrhotite surface. The metal:DETA ratio appeared to be 1:2. Cu was more readily removed than Ni, but the combination of DETA with sulphur dioxide was equally effective for both metal ions. Certain combinations of DETA, Ni ions, xanthate and dithionite (S2O4) or dithionate (S2O6), as representative derivatives of SO2 in water, produced hydrophilic precipitates. The 2101 lean duplex stainless steel has wide potential application in storage, heat exchangers, and in the oil and gas industries. This work investigates the electrochemical behaviour of 2101 duplex stainless steel with an addition of 0.15 wt% ruthenium, using potentiodynamic techniques in 1M H2SO4 at 25º, 40º, 60º, and 80ºC. The microstructures of samples were characterized using optical metallography and scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that the ruthenium addition moved the corrosion potential of alloy 2101 to a more positive potential. All samples containing ruthenium displayed longer passive regions at 25°C and 80°C compared to those without ruthenium. Alloys without ruthenium had higher critical current density (icrit) values when compared to the alloys with ruthenium. Ruthenium additions decreased the passive current densities and inhibited anodic dissolution. At room temperature the corrosion rate of alloys with ruthenium was lower than these without ruthenium.

Shotcrete has become a strategic component of support in underground mines. The ductility of reinforced shotcrete makes it a safe and economic means of surface support under adverse static and dynamic loads. The ability of ductile shotcrete to sustain load at large deflections enables excavations in squeezing conditions to be stabilized and the safety in excavations subject to rock bursting, to be assured. A Shotcrete Working Group was formed to find the configurations of fibre reinforcement that would give shotcrete the same ductility as when reinforced with mesh. Beams and panels reinforced with various types and lengths of fibre were accordingly tested. A single mix design consisting of river sand, ordinary Portland cement, fly ash, condensed silica fume and gunite dust and segregation suppressant was used. Steel and polypropylene fibre varying in length from 25 to 50 mm were used in nominal contents of 5 % and 0.5% by mass respectively. Beams, panels and control specimens were shot into specially made formers. Suitable mixing procedures were developed for the different types of fibre. The test specimens were shot in a semi-dry mix process. The shotcrete was cured until tested 28 days after shooting. The fibre contents and uniaxial compressive and Brazilian tensile strengths of the shotcrete were determined from the control specimens. The beams and panels were tested in bending in specially manufactured test rigs. The beams were examined for simple supports and fixed ends. The panels were fixed in a manner that simulated underground conditions and were loaded statically under uniform pressure. The beams were loaded and the corresponding deflections measured up to failure. The panels were loaded up to mid-span deflections of 150 mm. The results are presented in the form of load-deflection graphs. The peak loads and ultimate deflections for the fixed end beams were considerably larger than for the simply supported beams for the various types of fibre considered. None of the beams tested, however, were able to sustain load at relatively constant value beyond the peak load. The panel tests showed that 40 mm and 50 mm long steel fibre and 30 mm, 40 mm and 50 mm long monofilament polypropylene fibre reinforcement gave shotcrete the same ductility as mesh.

"Underground blasting operations are challenging from the standpoint of the distribution of explosivesenergy representative of ring blasting. Energy from both shock and pressure regimes of commercialexplosives may appear concentrated in the collar region of a typical ring blast and diluted at the toes of holes due to the oblique geometries of blastholes. The non-homogenous nature of ore in whichexplosives are distributed via drillholes, adds to the complexities of generating particulate profiles from fragmented material with consistencies that are predictable from blast pattern to blast pattern - well suited for specific underground handling equipment and mill processing. In an ideal world, it would be the blasting operations themselves that represent the primary crushing mechanism, or at least mitigate mechanical crushing that can comprise a large component of the cost in generating suitable muck. This paper presents a dynamic break view in 3D that allows a planner to visualize the potential break zone around a blasthole generated by an explosive load using a Kleine field. Simple as it sounds, this methodology provides information that can be used in conjunction with cavity monitoring surveys (CMS) to potentially judge dilution due to overbreak as well as recovery for a typical blast. As examples, there are two break geometries that are examined regarding circular breaks and elliptical breaks around blastholes. Using a Kleine field to define break, a planner generated isosurface can be generated and compared to CMS data for calibration and prediction, using AEGIS 3D ring design software."

The spillage of liquid diethyl ether in rooms at floor level and 3 feet above the floor resulted in flammable vapor-air mixtures in the immediate vicinity of the exposed liquido The liquid temperature was found to decrease by as much as 35° C., with a resultant decrease in vaporization rate. A search of the literature yielded numerous references to unstable peroxide (residue) formed by the autoxidation of ether. Such residues appear to constitute an explosion hazard in the condensed state.

"The St. Lawrence deposit is a large wollastonite skarn (ca. 9 Mt @ 41.3% wollastonite) adjoining the gabbroic-to-syenitic Leo Lake pluton in the granulite facies Frontenac Terrane of the Grenvillian Central Metasedimentary Belt. It occurs within a horseshoeshaped horizon of quartzite, open to the east. The skarn extends over 1.2 km2, and comprises wollastonite-dominant, wollastonite-clinopyroxene, and diverse quartz-feldspar-sulphide (-titanite) layers, interbanded with, and strongly folded within, the quartzite. As in the world-class wollastonite deposits of the Willsboro district, New York, no carbonate protolith is preserved, and calcite is a negligible constituent of the mineralized zones. Wollastonite development is nonetheless ascribed to metasomatism of a metacarbonate unit by magmatogene, silica-rich, CO2-poor (XCO2 < 0.05) fluids, at P = 350 MPa and ca. 560°C, or, alternatively, 550 MPa and ca. 630°C.Several high-grade zones, averaging >40% but locally exceeding 80%, of translucent, white, tabular wollastonite grains, with lengths of 0.2 cm to 5 cm, have been delimited by drilling. Preliminary beneficiation studies yield high aspect-ratio and high-purity (low Fe and Mn) concentrates.St. Lawrence compares favourably to other known prospects and operating wollastonite deposits: having good chemical and physical properties, low iron content, and high aspect ratios (>20:1). In addition, the deposit has a favourable size and location, and will benefit from a low Canadian dollar. Canada currently has no wollastonite production."

INTRODUCTION The Point Lepreau nuclear generating station was constructed in the late 1970&apos;s and early 1980&apos;s by the New Brunswick Electric Power Commission. Point Lepreau is a small peninsula on the north shore of the Bay of Fundy, about 55 km west of St. John, New Brunswick. Cooling water for the plant was to be obtained from and discharged into the Bay of Fundy by the system of shafts and tunnels illustrated in Fig. 1. The design engineer for the cooling water system was Albery, Pullerits, Dickson and Associates, Ltd., Toronto. Ferrera-Resco Ltd, Windsor, Ontario, was contractor for construction of the cooling water shaft and tunnel system, which was done between 1976 and 1979. The senior author was project manager for Ferrera-Resco, the junior author served as consultant to Ferrera-Resco on evaluation of certain geotechnical questions which arose during construction. SITE CONDITIONS Geology Except for limited overburden soils at the onshore shaft sites, the tunnels and shafts were constructed entirely in Triassic conglomerate, sandstone, and siltstone, with some shale interbeds. The bedding strike averaged about N6°E, The dip was to the west at about 30° along the Discharge Tunnel and 40° along the Intake Tunnel. Rock along the Intake Tunnel was mostly sandstone and siltstone and more thinly bedded, with RQ D generally in the range of 50 to 60%. Rock along the Discharge Tunnel tended to be coarser sandstone and conglomerate and more thickly bedded, with higher RQ D averaging about 80%. The combination of Stage 1 Geoinformatics legacy data intervention processes with the Stage 2 ultra-detailed airborne geophysical prospecting demonstrates a new approach to converting data to information to knowledge, and converting that knowledge into exploration results. &nbsp; The Coromandel region of the North Island of New Zealand has long been know to host gold deposits of economic viability (Hauraki Gold Fields). To the SE of this area lies the Taupo Volcanic Region (TVR) where the geology and structural setting mirror the Hauraki Gold Fields, however mineral exploration in the past has been hindered by the blanketing volcanic ash deposits. Glass Earth Limited recognised that this whole potential epithermal gold province could be effectively explored utilising rapid, risk orientated processing to review legacy geoscience data: The Geoinformatics Data Intervention Process; which in turn directed ultra detailed airborne geophysical surveys over the TVR. Results have outlined 21 new drillable potential epithermal gold targets; and a plethora of other targets with high prospectivity.

An improved method for preparing gravimetric standard gas mixtures of helium-4 in nitrogen has been developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. A single-pan 12-kg analytical balance that has a sensitivity of 3 mg is used to prepare the mixture. The balance will accommodate a cylinder having a volume of approximately 4 L that weighs approximately 5 kg. The method has been improved to a precision of ±O.04 pct by performing four successive dilutions, by improved handling of gases in the manifold, and by using an improved analytical method to select high-purity gases.

Through 1996 and 1997, CANMET and the Cape Breton Development Corporation (CBDC) conducted a project to study the Phalen Mine’s 7 East longwall ventilation network to help determine methane emission patterns that were having a negative impact on coal production. Increased methane emissions were primarily related to mining depth and were also affected by the influence of a large sandstone body located above the worked seam. The research included the installation of tube bundle systems to monitor waste (gob) methane and pressure differentials. The focus of this paper is on the novel use of tracer gas techniques that helped shed light on the performance of the ventilation system and in determining the methane migration paths in the waste.

The Barrick Zaldivar mine is an openpit, heap-leach copper mine in Region II of northern Chile at an elevation of 3,300 m (10,826 ft), approximately 1,400 km (870 miles) north of Santiago and 175 km (109 miles) southeast of the port city of Antofagasta. In 2006, Zaldívar produced 307 million lbs of copper, with reserves estimated at 5.7 billion lbs. The mine uses conventional methods of openpit mining: Pure cathode copper is produced by three stages of crushing and stacking the ore, followed by heap leaching and bacterial activity to extract copper from the ore into solution. A solvent extraction and electrowinning process then removes the copper from solution and produces the cathode copper. A flotation plant also recovers copper contained in the fine fraction of the crushed ore. In 2006, an existing A-frame structure that covered copper ore from the mine?s secondary crushing operation was damaged beyond repair. The material delivery configuration of this original structure had the conveyor carrying incoming ore directly over the low roof to drop ore into the building at its peak, and ore trickling from the sides of the conveyor had accumulated on the roof, overloading it. A better solution had to be found, and fast: First, the Chilean Commission does not permit uncovered piles of this type since the extremely fine material leads to serious pollution problems. Second, Barrick Zaldivar is very concerned about worker safety, and the amount of dust created by the uncovered pile was not acceptable. "Ventilation is one of the meet important factors in mining, although until recent years less thought has probably been given to effective ventilation than to any other one phase of mining. In the past, very little, if any, attention was given air courses until they became so constricted by falls that the volume of air was greatly reduced; and, in addition, the stoppings and doors were so poorly constructed that only a very small percentage of air reached the face workings.As a matter of fact, mines have been visited where the volume of air being circulated in certain sections was much larger than in others, and where the management was striving to increase the flow of air in those sections with the least air current, believing the ventilation to be deficient. After sampling and analyzing the return air from the various sections in such mines it has been found that the quality of the air in certain places with the largest flow was more impure than in some of those with the least flow.In past years, practically all mine fans were operated by steam-driven engines supplied with steam from the mire boiler plant. No check was made on the steam consumption or the power cost of operating the fan, therefore the management had very little if any definite information as to cost of ventilating the mine.With the increased use of electrically-driven equipment in mines electricity is being used more and more to drive mine ventilating fans, and since in many instances the current is purchased from central power plants operators have come to realize that in many cases the cost of operating the fans is very high. Some engineers estimate that it ranges from 20 to 50 per cent of the total power cost of the mine. This information, together with the fact that mines are now being developed on a larger scale, requiring larger quantities of air for the men to dilute the gases liberated, has caused the large progressive companies to make, a more comprehensive study of mine ventilation, resulting in a decided improvement in the quality and quantity of air at the face workings, as well as reducing materially the ventilating costs."

Total milling cost is composed of energy, liner and grinding media costs. In primary high ball load milling, the grinding media play the biggest role in total milling cost. This cost can be drastically reduced by improving the impact condition inside the mill. The impact condition inside the mill is influenced by shell liner design (as well as feed end and discharge design) and the type of discharge. The improvement of the impact condition will result in a significant decrease in grinding media consumption. The softened impact condition allows for better alloy optimization, resulting in a further reduction in grinding media consumption. Optimized liner design can also improve energy consumption as less energy is wasted in the projection of the grinding media. Magotteaux utilizes tools to simulate and show the grinding media trajectories for shell and end liners. This paper will present some practical examples where the media and energy consumption can be or has been reduced by optimizing liner design.
