Abstract - Most of the gold in the Late Archean Witwatersrand Basin is of detrital origin but, in its present form, it is metamorphosed. The only relict detrital features preserved are the morpho­logical characteristics of some placer gold particles. Regional burial metamorphism in the shallower and deeper levels of the Witwatersrand Supergroup reached temperatures around 300°C and 350°C at pressures between 2 kbar and 3 kbar, respectively , estimated from phase relations, chlorite-chloritoid exchange thermometry and chlorite thermometry . Metamorphism of the gold involved compositional homogenization of individual gold particles and partial recrystallization. Various infiltration events caused the partial mobilization of the gold at slightly lower temperatures, between 240°C and 300°C. These infiltrations can be related to crustal extension during the deposition of massive carbonate sequences of the Transvaal Supergroup (around 2.5 Ga), and later to the emplacement of the Bushveld Complex, and to the Vredefort event around 2.0 Ga ago. The mobility of the gold was dependent on the sulfur fugacity prevailing in a particular horizon which, in turn, was deter­ mined by the amount of pyrite (and other sulfides) present in that horizon. With the sulfur fugacity being controlled by stratigraphy, low fluid:rock ratios in a pyrite-rich horizon were most conducive for the mobilization of the gold. Thus, long-range gold mobilization in the Witwatersrand Basin can be expected to be the exception rather than the rule.

Laser coatings are used for a wide variety of applications. TiB2/Ni intermetallic matrix composite coatings were fabricated on Al-substrate by a high power Rofin Sinar Nd: YAG solid-state laser. The characterization of the coatings was carried out by optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM/EDS) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD). Electrochemical study of the laser coatings in 3.65 per cent NaCl at room temperature revealed that with very high weight proportion of nickel the corrosion resistance of the coatings deteriorated due the presence of AlB10 phase. 50 wt per cent TiB2+50 wt per cent Ni laser coatings exhibited the highest corrosion resistance in test solution. In this work, the floatability of Jordanian phosphate slime (-38 µm) was evaluated in a batch column flotation cell, 100 cm high and 5 cm inner diameter. Flotation was conducted using sodium oleate as a collector and methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC) as frother. Rougher flotation yielded concentrate assaying 29.19% P2O5 with 90.29% recovery at the following flotation parameters: 2.6 cm/s superficial gas velocity, 20 ppm frother dosage, 0.205 mM collector concentration and 40% weight solids. It was also found that conditioning with the same collector dosage but with a different solids weight percent gave different flotation results. However, pulp collector concentration was the key operating parameter; increasing collector dosage at the same solids weight percent decreased flotation recovery by 3%, while increasing solids weight percent at the same collector dosage increased phosphate recovery by 18%.

The current study is part of the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) on-going subsidence research program. The long-term objective of the DOE program is to develop analytical methods of subsidence prediction applicable over a broad range of geologic and mining conditions encountered in the United States. The DOE currently has several contracts in progress to develop a sound data base that can be used in the development of predictive models. Dames & Moore is currently under contract to the DOE to collect and analyze detailed subsidence and hydrologic data from a coal mine employing longwall mining methods in the Eastern Coal Province. Work under Contract No. DE-AC22-80PC 30335 began in October of 1980 and will continue through September of 1984. This paper summarizes the work that has been completed through September of 1981 and presents the results that have been achieved during this period. Technical difficulties encountered during both the installation and monitoring phases are discussed, and recommendations for future work are presented.

The mining industry in Colorado faces the same problems the industry faces throughout the United States and the world — record low commodity prices and increasing regulatory and environmental restrictions that seemed designed to curtail mining activities. Despite those obstacles, the mining industry in Colorado still contributes about $8 billion annually to the state’s economy in the form of base and precious metals, industrial minerals, coal and associated service businesses and jobs. So the 300 attendees at the102nd National Western Mining Conference felt reason-ably positive about the industry in their state. The meeting is the Colorado Mining Association’s annual conference and was held at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs in November. The theme was “Mining in the New Millennium — Achievement + Innovation = Survival.” Experts from Colorado’s mining industry and abroad discussed the challenges faced by the mining industry as it enters the new millennium. They offered insights into how the industry will operate during the early years of the 21st century and how it will survive low prices and increased regulatory restrictions.

The robustness of the large-sections correction procedure, Hill's fast approximation, Barbery's correction and the PARGEN correction was examined by comparing their ability to reconstruct the true liberation distribution using sectioning data from computer-generated spheres. The results indicate that the flexibility of a correction procedure is related to the assumptions it makes about the continuity of the liberation distribution, locked-particle characteristics and ore texture. Overall, the large-sections procedure appeared to be the most generally applicable. The Hill fast approximation performed well, but this was probably because it partially incorporates the sphere model; the performance of the PARGEN and Barbery corrections varied from case to case.

Flyrock is the unexpected and undesirable projection of rock fragments during detonation of a blast and managing this risk is becoming an increasing challenge as urban development encroach toward mineral extraction sites. The basic factors associated with flyrock are discussed in relation to geology, blast design and management. Published data of historical flyrock events are investigated and compared with local information on incidents. Good agreement was found between the data sets. A computer program of flyrock was developed using projectile motion based on launch velocity and angle, rock size, shape and density. This deterministic model was coupled with a probability model to simulate blast events. The impulse time ?t of the explosive pressure was taken as the stochastic variable to replace launch velocity. The variables were calibrated to replicate field data. A simulation was executed to demonstrate the capability of the approach to defining flyrock danger zones. For a simplistic situation it was identified that an appropriate distance to be cordoned off for the blast danger zone is a radius of 120 m in front of the blast and 65 m behind.

The method of chloride-hypochlorite leaching has the advantages of short process, low pollution and higher in reaction rate compared with the traditional leaching method. In this research, NaCl - NaClO solution is used to leaching gold from a refractory gold concentrate, and the influence of NaCl and NaClO concentration, reaction time to the leaching rate were investigated in this experiment. The raw materials and the leaching residue were characterized by a series of analysis methods such as XRD, XRF, SEM and EDS. Results indicate that the leaching rate and the desulfurization rate can be achieved at 96.26% and 98% with most optimum conditions as follows: NaCl concentration 50g/L, NaClO concentration 200g/L, Liquid-solid ratio 10:1, the best reaction time was 150 mins. And these conditions should be guaranteed pH<8.0, ORP>900mV.

The resulting effects of this slide were thousands of ounces of gold that were now deferred and an unstable wall above which made mining the slough material unsafe.

"SynopsisAlmost 20 years have passed since the cutting-edge research by Thompson and Visser on the design and management of opencast mine haul roads was conducted in South Africa. This system is based on three principles, namely the structural ability to support the ultra-heavy truck loads, the selection of vehicle and environmentally friendly riding surface, and an appropriate level of maintenance to counteract wear and tear. Obviously, proper layout and geometry are essential.These principles have been implemented worldwide, and it is useful to review the lessons learned. The objectives of this paper are to present a critical review of the status of mine haul road design and management, and the impact that these principles have made on operations, particularly the cost-effectiveness. The paper briefly reviews the principles of the haul road design and management and the extent to which they are applicable. Case studies of a number of implementations are presented to demonstrate that the principles are sound and have been applied effectively. For example, at an international operation the transport cost of coal was 40% more expensive than anticipated in the feasibility stage, and this made the mining operation uneconomic. Correction of this problem resulted in a viable enterprise. Although designed for opencast operations, the principles are equally valid for underground operations, and initial development work will be discussed.The main conclusions are that the research approach is valid and its effectiveness has been demonstrated in a number of applications. The anticipated financial benefit has been derived, and has made the mining operations that used the principles more effective. An accepted statement of fact is that, next to agriculture, transportation is the second most important industry in the world. The transportation networks of the United States have greatly contributed to our nation&apos;s growth and prosperity. The objective here is to make the reader aware of the need for communication between geologists, mining engineers, purchasing agents, and transportation managers. Only through a cooperative effort is it possible to reap the benefits of transportation in the industrial minerals field. Transportation is often thought of in terms of trucks, rail cars, barges, and covered wagons. There is much more. Corning Inc. Corning Glass Works is a worldwide organization with more than $2 billion in annual sales. It supplies more than 60,000 different products a year to some 47,000 customer firms and millions of individual consumers. Corning operates 32 of its own plants worldwide and is also an investor with a 50-50 or minority position in 24 affiliated companies in 11 countries. Corning competes in four broad business categories: • specialty glass and ceramics; • consumer housewares; • laboratory sciences; and • telecommunications Binding these four sectors together is the glue of technology. Coming&apos;s research laboratory, established in 1908, was one of the first in American industry. That early commitment to research has never wavered. Today, Corning spends annually on research and devel¬opment, as a percentage of sales, at double the average rate for all manufacturing industry in the US. Some 1500 scientists, engineers, and support personnel are now employed at the company&apos;s research and development centers in the US, Japan, and France. Petalite background A family of materials melted conventionally as a glass, then converted by special processing to a ceramic was invented in 1957. One of the basic minerals in this glass ceramic product is petalite. Petalite is a monoclinic mineral with a framework silicate structure and a low iron content, about 0.06% Fe2O3. Petalite is found in very few places throughout the world and no commercial petalite deposit has been found in the United States. Sizable deposits occur in Zimbabwe, Southwest Africa, Brazil, Australia, the Soviet Union, and Sweden. Coming&apos;s purchasing and geology departments located a source of petalite with proven reserves in what was then known as Rhodesia. The supplier was Bikita Minerals. The relationship with Bikita was one in which Bikita supplied bulk ore that Corning processed into a finished material at its US facility. This bulk ore method of shipment resulted in high losses through contamination and processing. It also caused tank upsets at the Corning plant because of iron contamination picked up through the numerous handlings of this product in bulk. The relationship with Bikita continued until 1965 when the white political leadership of Rhodesia declared its independence from Great Britain. This led to the imposition of international sanctions. The sanctions were lifted in 1980 and the relationship with Bikita was reestablished in 1983.

The methane content of virgin bituminous coalbed can now be measured accurately in the field with exploration core samples from vertical boreholes. The gas content of the coal per unit weight can be used either to design a mine ventilation system or to determine if degasification of the coalbed will be necessary before mining, and to determine the gas resources in the coalbed. The equipment necessary to conduct the test costs less than $50. The gas content of the coal in place in the ground is determined by summing the gas lost from coring, gas measured during desorption, and the residual gas in the coal. Upon removal from the borehole, the core sample is placed in an airtight container and desorbed for several weeks until the desorption rate is below 0.05 cm3/g for 5 consecutive days. The gas lost from the core while it was being cored and the residual gas are estimated by a new graphical method. The amount of gas remaining depends upon whether the coal is friable or blocky. Friability appears to relate to the depth of the sample below the surface, fixed carbon percentage, Hardgrove grindability index, and proximity to tectonic disturbance. Friable coals emit nearly 96 pct of the total gas during desorption whereas a blocky coal emits only 60 pct of its total gas. Coalbeds that are ill defined as to their blocky or friable nature must be tested in the laboratory for unambiguous analysis.

"The innate ability of microorganisms to adapt to changing or inhospitable environments has often been exploited for industrial purposes and forms the basis of many current biotechnological processes. The ability of bacteria to adapt and adhere to specific mineral surfaces ensures that the energetic or nutritional requirements of the cell are met and often serves as a survival mechanism under unfavourable?growth conditions or conditions of stress. In this process, cells may rearrange or modify the macromolecules expressed on the cell surface itself or produce extracellular molecules, modifying mineral surfaces to render them more suitable for growth. The modifications that these molecules produce on mineral surfaces may result in changes to the surface charge and hydrophobicity of a mineral. As a result, these biomolecules may have some potential application as flotation collectors or modifiers.In this work, the effect of long-term exposure of Paenibacillus taiwanensis to goethite and common gangue minerals associated with Australian iron ores on the differential expression of membrane and extracellular proteins was determined. Both groups of proteins play a role in cell adherence to mineral particles. Cells were adapted to grow in the presence of each mineral over time. The proteins expressed on the cell membrane and the extracellular proteins excreted by the cell were isolated and analysed by two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2D gel PAGE). Many factors govern the size and shape of an open pit, and these must be properly understood and used in the short and long-term planning of any open pit and quarrying operation. The importance of each factor will depend on the particular project, but the geology, grade, and localization of mineralization, extent of the deposit, topography, property boundaries, production rates, bench height, pit slopes, road grades, mining costs, and cut-off grades are key elements of open pits. This paper discusses the work done on the above parameters in order to provide an optimal production plan for a limestone quarry and clay deposits that provide raw material for a cement factory in Turkey. Soke cement factory has 1 400 000 tons of clinker capacity and is located on the western part of Turkey, in the province of Aydin. It is one of the largest facilities in the cement sector in terms of capacity, and it has a large advantage over facilities because the location of the factory was chosen to obtain the raw materials necessary for cement production within very short distances. However, the old reserves that supplied limestone to the factory had been reported to have run out, and therefore new limestone reserves in the same province have been investigated over the years by experienced geologists. From surface samples, high MgO content was reported in the neighbourhood of limestone formations with high dolomatization; hence, other alternatives were taken into consideration. One alternative with better chemical composition had been found 24 km away from the factory, but the haulage cost of limestone was unacceptable for the factory due to high diesel prices in Turkey. The maximum allowable MgO content in the pre-mix feed to a rotating furnace is 2.5% MgO content in pre-mix from both limestone and clay deposits. The clay deposits belonging to the cement factory have higher MgO content than the limestone deposit, and therefore this quality problem was taken into consideration first, instead of transporting material from 24 km away. This study gives the details of work done to evaluate both the clay and limestone deposits, statistical analysis performed on core samples taken from drill holes, mathematical modelling for both sites, and most importantly of all, in-pit homogenization work that reduced the pre-mix MgO content. As a result of this study, the profitable limestone quantity has been improved in order to serve the cement factory over a projected 25 additional years without using any material from the close deposit.

Most Blasting Programs are developed focussing on the environmental impact with respect to blast vibration and airblast. Compliance with existing regulations or policies limiting the immissions are generally achieved through constrains in the blast design, or monitoring programs. Efficient monitoring programs combine compliance monitoring and blast assessment. Signals, which are obtained in the area of direct influence of the seismic source, can contain valuable information about the blast design parameters. Techniques to analyze blast vibration signals have advanced and can assist in understanding the contribution of individual blast parameters to blast vibration and airblast. Advanced signal analysis encompasses magnitude analysis, Fast Fourier Transforms (FFT) and frequency scans in the frequency domain, as well as filtering in the time domain. Through examples, the advanced signal analysis techniques and their limitations are described and discussed, showing the impact of blast timing, timing accuracy, charge configuration and the geology dependent transmission behavior. Optimization criteria and pragmatic monitoring programs can be developed on the basis of the most influential blast parameters. In addition, however, safety and the cost efficiency of the blasting program are essential to the success of an operation. That is where advanced signal analysis techniques can interface with blast planning, computer assisted modeling and information systems. A valuable process can be developed to ensure compliance with existing regulations and efficient risk management for mining operations, while tracking cost and supporting operational decisions. A conceptual blasting information system is presented.

Several commercial polyacrylamide flocculants most widely used in Western Canadian mineral processing plants have been analyzed chemically and compared in standardized settling tests as aids to thickening and clarification. Data are included for both dry and liquid-type flocculants. Percentages of active ingredients in these commercial products varied Widely. Performances were compared on the basis of: equal additions of active ingredients, nearly equal molecular weights and nearly equal degrees of ionic character. Based on zone settling velocities and supernatant clarities of siliceous slurries coagulated by lime additions, dry flocculants proved more economical than liquid flocculants. Using these same two criteria, the most highly anionic were more effective than either weakly anionic or non ionic polyacrylamide- type flocculants.

This report documents the design, fabrication, testing, and coal mine demonstration of a hopper-feeder-bolter during a four-phase program for the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The machine was designed to increase productivity and safety in under-ground room-and-pillar mining. It performed well as a hopper-feeder for continuous haulage during a coal mine demonstration. Testing in a simulated mine showed that the machine also has good roof bolting capability.

Part 2 presents short abstracts of the publications issued during this period in the Bureau series and in other media. Part 3 describes a short study on the shock initiation of hydrogen peroxide not destined for publication elsewhere. This chapter deals with the concepts of shock waves and detonation waves together, because a detonation wave is really a shock wave, supported by the explosive reaction that the shock wave ignites and propagates as it travels through the explosive material. In the c.ootext of rock blasting, furthermore, there is justification for treating shock waves and detonation waves together, because the mechanical effect of the detonation in an explosive in a drillhole in rock is propagated and its effects are spread throughout the surrounding rock by means of a shock wave. The overall performance of sn explosive in rock blasting or any other application is of course dependent on how much thermal energy is released in the chemical reaction that occurs when the material detonates, and on how much useful mechanical work the reaction products can do as they expand. A major portion of this chapter deals with the prediction and measurement of explosive performance, a subject which is now still in a process of rapid development.
