"In December 2011, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of West Virginia, the U.S. Department of Justice, Alpha Natural Resources (ANR) and Alpha Appalachia Holdings entered into a nonprosecution agreement related to the explosion at the Upper Big Branch Mine (UBB) that killed 29 miners. This coal operation was owned by Performance Coal Co., an affiliate of Massey Energy Co., which was acquired by ANR in June 2011, more than a year after the UBB explosion. Pursuant to the agreement, ANR agreed to:• Establish a trust within 120 days.• Pay a total of US$48 million into the trust to be used solely to fund and administer research and development (R&D) projects to improve mine health and safety.• Administer the trust by three highly qualified individuals with academic and/or professional backgrounds in mine health and safety.In April 2012, the Alpha Foundation for the Improvement of Mine Safety and Health was created. The three directors - Michael Karmis, president; David Wegman, vice presidenttreasurer, and Keith Heasley, vice presidentsecretary - approved a plan to expend both the interest and principal of the trust, aiming at an 8-10 year research horizon. The foundation also appointed David Belden, an experienced manager of nonprofits and professional associations, as the first executive director of the foundation. The IRS approved the foundation’s tax-exempt application, as described in Section 501c(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, on Dec. 18, 2012. The board established guiding principles of the foundation, which are as follows:• Mission: to improve mine health and safety through funding R&D projects to qualified academic institutions and other not-for-profit organizations.• Vision: to enable miners in the future to be free of work related injury or disease by the implementation of the results of the projects funded by the foundation and undertaken by the best researchers from any discipline that can contribute. The foundation is now approaching its third year and regularly posts updates, including semi-annual reports, to its website (www.http.alpha-foundation.org/), which serves as the main medium for communication with the broader stakeholder community"

Wellbore enlargement was tested using hydrazine hydrate in a gas-storage well in Ohio to increase the well productivity. The wellbore was to be enlarged by chemical disaggregation of the sandstone adjacent to the wellbore. Productivity immediately declined 49.1 percent and gradually declined to zero in 7 months. A down-hole camera survey showed a white-to-gray precipitate covering the entire wellbore surface. The precipitate was chemically analyzed and identified as mostly carbazic acid, a hydrazine derivative of carbonic acid. Formation of this precipitate was not anticipated; this viscous sub-stance caused the gradual loss in productivity of the well. The wellbore was not enlarged. Laboratory tests were run to determine what clay stabilization measures could be taken in sandstone cores to prevent clay swelling and particle migration caused by hydrazine hydrate. Normal clay stabilization methods did not prevent the virtually complete loss in permeability to hydrazine hydrate. Other laboratory tests using natural gas diluted with small amounts of carbon dioxide confirmed the ease with which carbazic acid could be formed in a hydrazine hydrate-saturated environment within and adjacent to the wellbore.

This presentation covers the results of laboratory studies conducted by the Bureau of Mines Mineral Dressing Section, Northwest Electrodevelopment Laboratory, Albany, Oreg., on alluvial sands from Dismal Swamp, Bear Valley, and Cascade, Idaho. The search for radioactive minerals has led to the reexamination of alluvial deposits; in the process of this reappraisal the frequent presence of minerals bearing columbium and/or tantalum was toted. Because of increased demand for these metals by the defense industries and because these industries depend upon foreign sources for their supply the domestic alluvial black sands are being considered, as a possible domestic source. However, utilization of these alluvial deposits depends upon development of methods of concentrating these valuable minerals. The primary objective of the test work was the study of the effect of attrition scrubbing, sizing, magnetic, electrostatic, and gravity separa¬tion as methods for concentrating and recovering the columbium and tantalum-bearing minerals, samarskite, euxenite, ilmenorutile, and columbite.

The early to mid 1980s was a period of mining consolidation, and many senior design engineers retired from the mill industry. Similar conditions have existed in the last few years. This creates a loss of a tremendous amount of experience. This paper is a look back by two senior mill designers who survived the dips in both time periods. From a continuous design practice of over 25 years, mill designs and fabrication practices are surveyed with a view of identifying what works, and is necessary, and what doesn’t, or is not necessary, in the creation of a safe, economic, long-lived grinding mill.

In the field of mineral processing, although many operations are applied to suspensions of ore particles in fluids, there is a lack of fundamental knowledge relative to the flow resistance encountered by immersed bodies moving through solid-liquid suspensions. Previously proposed equations, based on the Ostwald-de Waele (power-law) model for non-Newtonian fluids, are exam ined in the turbulent flow region relative to a number of pertinent variables and their effects on the movement of immersed bodies. As more knowledge is acquired in regard to the effects of suspension variables on the rheological properties, useful relationships may be proposed to allow predictions of conditions to achieve optimum results for engineering purposes. In the field of minerals processing, many operations are applied to suspensions of ore particles in fluids. The differential movement of solids of various sizes and densities in suspensions is of utmost importance to gravity concentration, wet classification, flotation, hydrometallurgy, and pipeline transport of solids. The subject is also of importance to other branches of engineering; for example, those involved with soil mechanics, ceramic slips, and oil-well drilling fluids. There is a lack of fundamental knowledge relative to the flow resistance encountered by immersed bodies moving through solid-liquid suspensions. The problems encountered in the direct application of the well-known Stokes and Newton's Laws to non-Newtonian systems have been examined in a previous paper.' Equations were proposed based on the Ostwald-de Waele (power-law) model for non-Newtonian fluids. This present paper examines these equations in the turbulent flow region relative to a number of pertinent variables and their effects on the movement of immersed bodies. It is thought that, as more knowledge is acquired as to the effects of suspension variables on the rheological properties, useful relationships may be proposed to allow prediction of conditions to achieve optimum results for engineering purposes. The purpose of this paper is to make an initial assessment of the nature and magnitude of pertinent suspension variables. In order to avoid too voluminous a document, the examination of kinetics and mechanisms will be omitted at this time. THEORY A Newtonian fluid is defined as a fluid in which the stress is proportional to the rate of strain, 2 i.e.: H = viscosity; see Table I. for list of symbols The following equations are conventionally used to assess the motion of spherical particles moving under laminar and turbulent flow conditions through Newtonian fluids: When these relationships are applied in practice to suspensions, the liquid density is substituted by a composite suspension density, and viscosity is usually taken as that of the suspending liquid or an approximated "apparent viscosity." However, suspensions are non-Newtonian in character3 and thus, more than one viscosity parameter is required to describe their behavior. A number of models have been proposed for non-Newtonian fluids;2,4 among these the simplest is the Ostwaldde Waele or power-law model for incompressible fluids which for one dimensional flow may be reduced to:

It will be observed from the accompanying chart that after following a consistent decline for 4 years, the fatality curve turned upward in 1923 and advanced sharply in 1929. Although this increase in fatalities coincided with a period of intensive development it tends to indicate some laxness in the industry during a period of increased hazards. Intensive drilling campaigns are usually started hurriedly and conducted with a great demand for speed, and the result is that accident-prevention work is too often relegated to a position of minor importance.

Aggregate resources consist of sand and gravel, and crushed stone. They are large-tonnage, bulk-minable mineral commodities that are used in construction and industrial activities (Tepordei, 1999, 2001).Rates of aggregate production, use and mine permit approval in the mid-Atlantic region differ by population density. These rates are influenced by economic and human factors, such as demand, costs, land availability and community opposition. In some areas, the local availability of aggregate is limited. This is due to the lack of suitable local source materials for aggregate, the loss of potential high-quality aggregate resource production sites by preemptive land development and restrictive zoning (resource sterilization), and the difficulty of developing and permitting production sites for aggregate.

Although the title of this paper focuses attention to the Winnipeg coal market the following remarks should be considered applicable not only to conditions in Winnipeg but to the whole western coal industry. Technical descriptions of coal and coal-burning have been omitted. These details are already covered in other numerous publications. In discussing a market the first consideration must be the product which is required to be sold. The class, quality and price at the point of origin must be taken into account and therefore this feature will be discussed before proceeding to outline conditions in the Winnipeg local market. The writer thinks of coal as a manufactured article, not, as it is generally considered, a fuel to be dug from the ground and dumped into the consumer's bin. The work of manufacturing must be considered in detail:- 1. Consider first the coal as it is in the ground: (a) What is its fuel value? (b) Where is its market? © With what will it be in competition? 2. Consider secondly: (a) What it will cost to mine the coal. (b) What has to be done to prepare the coal for market after it is mined. This must be considered in conjunction with the answer to question 1 ©. 3. Thirdly, consider the method of business to be adopted by the producer:- (a) Is it proposed to build a market on price? Or (b) On quality?

A seismic monitoring network has been installed in western Colorado (USA) in the vicinity of three underground coal mines to (i) distinguish and characterize seismic activity as either mining related or naturally occurring, (ii) implement a real-time event monitoring and notification tool, and (iii) collect data for use in research studies aimed at quantifying impacts from mining-related and natural seismicity. These potential impacts include dynamic rock mass failures such as coal bumps as well as strong shaking in the vicinity of critical structures such as impoundment dams, reservoirs, mine seals, mine openings, and steep slopes. Examples of two damaging seismic events are presented and the mining and geologic factors attending these dynamic failures are described.

Phase relations of gadolinium alloyed, up to 40 weight-percent (wt pct), with AISI 304-type stainless steel were established. Body-and face-centered cubic iron-rich solid solution phases and several intermetallic gadolinium-containing compounds of variable composition that approximated the formulas Fe9Gd, Ni7Gd2, Ni3Gd, Fe2Gd, NiGd, and NiGd3 were identified. The intermetallic phases Fe9Gd and Ni7Gd2 were noted to melt at about 1,080° C at about 0 to 2 wt pct gadolinium. The melting temperature of Fe9Gd increased with increas-ing gadolinium content to a plateau at about 1,230°C and 30 wt pct gadolinium, and the melting point of Ni7Gd2 decreased to a plateau at 900° C and 30 wt pct gadolinium where Ni3Gd, NiGd, and Fe2Gd coexist. Body-centered cubic iron solid solution was stable from 1 to 2 wt pct gadolinium to higher contents, 30 wt pct gadolinium or possibly more, and face-centered cubic iron up to 12 wt pct gadolinium below 1,200° C. The stability of these phases above 1,200° C was not resolved except for the mel points. A limited number of fabrication variables as well as mechanical and corrosion properties of alloys containing up to 5 wt pct gadolinium were studied. Equilibrating and forming operations were best conducted at about 940° to 1,080° C. Some variability in the yield and tensile strengths of alloys was noted; however, there was a continual decrease in ductility and impact resistance with increasing gadolinium contents. The resistance of gadolinium alloys to corrosion in water at 354° C was about the same as stainless steel.

ThERE are several reports in the literature which indicate that both solid-solution hydrogen and hydride precipitates can promote low-temperature em-brittlement of tantalum.1-3 For example, Imgram et al.2 showed that hydrogen additions in the range of 140 to 580 ppm promoted a ductile-to-brittle transition at slightly above room temperature in both wrought and recrystallized tantalum. This contrasts with the observation that tantalum of norma1 purity is very ductile, even at liquid-nitrogen temperature. Imgram et al. also found that hydrogen additions caused a deterioration of notch tensile properties of tantalum. The purpose of this communication is to present some limited evidence that hydrogen can also cause fatigue embrittlement of tantalum. The material used in this investigation was wrought, stress-relieved (1000°C, 1 hr), are-melted tantalum rod (5/8-in. diameter) containing the following impurities in weight percent: 0.005 C, 0.007 02, 0.0005 H2, 0.003 N2, 0.08 Cb, 0.01 W, and 0.01 Fe. Hydrogen charging was done in an atmosphere of flowing dry hydrogen for 3 hr at 600°C, followed by an homogenizing anneal in purified argon for 15 min at 600°C, and cooling in an argon atmosphere. Typical micro-structures of the hydrogen-free and the hydrogen-charged materials are shown in Fig. 1(a) and Fig. 1(b), respectively. Fig. 1(b) shows the appearance of hydride precipitates which, in many cases, formed preferentially parallel to the rod axis. The hydride dispersion was uniform across the diameter of the specimen. The fact that the precipitate was a tantalum hydride was tentatively confirmed by X-ray diffraction on a metallographically prepared surface. After hydrogen charging, chemical analyses by vacuum fusion revealed the hydrogen content to be 0.0295 wt pct. In addition, the oxygen and nitrogen contents were slightly raised to 0.0095 O2 and 0.005 N2.

During the last two decades, China has expanded its iron and steel industry very quickly, from less than 100 Mt/a steel production to over 700 Mt/a. It caused big increases in both domestic iron ore production and imported iron ore quantities year by year. The mode of iron ore supply has changed from almost all domestic supply to major tonnes of imported ore plus domestic ore supply. Over 200 blast furnaces with volumes larger than 1000 m3 each have been built and put into operation. Sinter machines have been enlarged quickly. There are now 135 sinter machines with =200 m2 sintering area each. Pellet production increased from 11.94 Mt in 1999 to 210 Mt in 2011, resulting from rapidly increasing domestic concentrate supply and rapid development of the grate-kiln process. The typical ferrous burden constitution is high basicity sinter plus pellets plus lump. The pellet proportion increased and the sinter proportion decreased gradually. A lot of technical improvements, like deep bed sintering, sintering with a high ratio of limonite, composite sintering, pellet process optimisation, a high ratio of hematite in pelletisation, blast furnace operation with low-grade ferrous burdens and hazardous element control, etc have been made to enhance iron burden quality and to reduce hot metal cost. Chinese iron and steel production is expected to increase slightly in the next few years. Its overcapacity should be controlled effectively. Given the variations of iron ore supply, pellet production will keep progressing in terms of production scale and pellet quality, the sintering process will be improved further by various measures to utilise different ores efficiently, and ferrous burden constitution will be optimised continuously to realise the lowest cost of hot metal production.CITATION:Sha, Y and Wang, Z, 2013. Lump ore is one of the key ferrous materials used in the blast furnace ironmaking process, typically accounting for 5–25 per cent of the blast furnace ferrous burden. Like other ferrous materials, the characteristics of lump ore have an important impact on stable operation and productivity of a blast furnace. As the cold burden lands on the top of the hot burden in the furnace and descends, it is inevitably subjected to thermal shock, which will likely lead to breakdown of the lump particles, or decrepitation and affect the gas permeability inside the blast furnace adversely. An ISO decrepitation test has therefore been developed to assess this behaviour of lump ore. However, the results obtained according to the existing standard decrepitation test method vary considerably between laboratories even for the same lump ore. To improve the test procedure of the existing decrepitation test, this paper first discusses the mechanisms leading to decrepitation and then studies the factors affecting lump ore decrepitation. Understanding the key factors affecting lump ore decrepitation is particularly important to improve the existing test procedure that enables researchers to achieve a higher degree of precision when conducting the decrepitation test.CITATION:Lu, L, Adam, M, Hapugoda, S and Kilburn. At the Southern Experiment Station, Tuscaloosa, Ala., reports are prepared from time to time on results of washability studies of coal from important beds in the Southern Appalachian region. The investigations that provide the material for these reports are made by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, in cooperation with the University of Alabama and the mine operators. The principal objective of a washability study is to obtain technically and commercially important data to aid in determining the best methods for preparing and utilizing the Nation's reserves, particularly of coking coals. Such information is also important from the standpoint of conservation, because it facilitates the selection of preparation methods that will yield an acceptable product with a minimum loss of coal to the rejects.

In October 2000, temporary seismographic stations were installed above the Trail Mountain Mine, Emery County, Utah, USA to supplement a regional network. Over seven months, 1826 mining-induced seismic events were recorded with a magnitude range of M 0 to M 2.2 (Arabasz et al., 2002, 2005). Routine event locations for this dataset cluster around the longwall mining activity during the recording interval. However, applying a double difference relocation technique to the routine locations significantly improves the correlation between mining activity and event location. The resulting relocations depend greatly on station distribution and the number of arrival time picks. We use this dense temporary array to assess station distribution requirements for applying the double difference technique at other mines by systematically removing data from available stations, thus simulating sparser networks. The insight gained using the Trail Mountain dataset is used to develop a metric for assessing the usefulness of above-mine networks and to develop a tool for expanding seismic network coverage. To verify the appropriateness of these tools for wider application, we examine data from two additional mines located in the western United States. Improving the relative locations of mining-induced seismic events highlights the association of these events with active portions of the mine. Clusters, regions of quiescence and relative timing of events can be used by mine operators to assess hazard, optimize production, and evaluate performance of mine plans. The lessons learned from this study may be used in future network design to improve accuracy of event locations at other mines.

Introduction The term kaolin is derived from kauling, a Chinese word meaning high ridge. This was the name of a hill in China where kaolin was first mined several hundred years ago (Murray, 1976). Other common names used for kaolin include clay and China Clay. Clay technically has a broader meaning and could refer to bentonite and ball clay as well as kaolin. China clay, as a descriptive term, apparently results from kaolin's origin. But it could also be due to a significant historical use in ceramic applications. The terms kaolin and clay will be used interchangeably in this analysis because of the common practice of using these terms in the paper industry. Major reasons for kaolin's wide-spread industrial usages center on kaolinite's physical features of good color, low viscosity, and inertness. Kaolin is described as a hydrous aluminum silicate with an approximate composition of 2H2O • A12O3 . 2SiO2. A new version of the product is calcined clay with modified hydration content. It is gaining widespread use. Components of any particular kaolin, in addition to alumina and silica, are viewed as impurities. The more values deposits and, hence, higher priced kaolin products are those of the highest purity. Kaolin is the most widely used mineral in paper manufacturing throughout the world. Key production centers are located in England and the US. Most of the Tatter's production is located in Georgia. The key markets for Georgia kaolin are paper markets - both paper coating and paper filling. These paper markets extend throughout the world, not just to domestic markets. In fact, export markets are second in size only to domestic paper markets for Georgia's producers of kaolin. Just as the paper markets are important for kaolin producers, kaolin is an important raw material for papermakers. Compared to the other three major pigments - titanium dioxide, calcium carbonate, and talc - kaolin's 1984 tonnage for papermaking represented 85% of the total. Even though titanium dioxide's unit value is much higher, kaolin's estimated total 1984 value still represented 51% of total dollars spent by papermakers for the four pigments. Kaolin grades- are briefly defined using particle size and brightness as principal means of classification. Likewise, grades of papers using kaolin are defined using the American Paper Institute's guidelines. From these definitions, associated kaolin grades used in particular grades of paper are reviewed. Special emphasis is placed on how qualities desired in certain papers are achieved through the use of specialized kaolin grades. During the examination of various commercial brands of copper wire bars, which had exhibited different degrees of adaptability for being drawn into fine gages of wire by the present-day high speed machine, it was found that each brand had a more or less characteristic crystal macrostructure. As the various brands did not differ materially in chemical composition, it was concluded that the differences in structure were the result of variations in casting technique.

ALTHOUGH it has been a matter of about one hundred years since the idea of the internal-combustion engine entered the mind of the inventor, the practical application of its use was not attained till 1860, when Lenoir produced an engine similar to the ordinary highpressure steam engine, with the valves arranged to admit the explosive mixture and the discharge of the exhaust gases. In this case no attempt was made to compress the gas before ignition, as it was then considered that the explosion under these conditions had a detrimental effect, inasmuch as it would act as a sudden blow to the working parts. Indeed, he went so far as to inject steam and water sprays to reduce the explosion.Under these conditions the consumption of gas was exceedingly high-about 106 cub. ft. of coal gas per b.h.p. per hour but the mechanical effect showed that the engine ran in every respect as smoothly and quietly as in best steam-engine practice.The extravagant consumption of this engine was clearly pointed out at the time by Gustav Schmidt in a paper before the German Society of Engineers, wherein he states :-" The results would be far more favourable if compression pumps, worked from the engine, compressed the cold air and cold gas to three atmospheres before entrance into the cylinder. By this means a greater expansion and transformation of heat is possible."
