The rapidly expanding economy of the West, with its growth of heavy industry, and increased steel production, is primarily responsible for the refractory clay industry's concern over the adequacy of the clay supply in States of the Great Plains and Rocky Mountains. Hence, the investigation by the Federal Bureau of Mines of the occurrence and use of refractory clays in North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, and Arizona has been encouraged by the major consumers and producers of this commodity. The Wyoming investigation is a part of the national program devised to close gaps in the domestic supply of specific types of clays to determine their characteristics and properties and to provide information that will assist the refractory-clay industry. Forty-two locations of clay-bearing rock in 17 areas in Wyoming were examined (fig. 1). Location 3 was not examined during this survey. Its description was taken from an earlier report. Locations 20, 21, and 22 were previously reported but were, also, examined by the Bureau. No samples were collected from these locations because field examination indicated that the shales were not refractory grade. The Hulett, Aladdin, and Newcastle areas are discussed in the section on the Black Hills district; the other 14 areas are described separately.

The two basic resources on which we all depend for our food, clothing, shelter, and other comforts are agriculture and minerals. Our endowment and how we use it; the spirit and industriousness of our people; our form of social organization all converge to make up our standard of living-our way of life.

Problem: Mining in the United States remains one of the most hazardous industries, despite significant reductions in fatal injury rates over the last century. Coal mine fatality rates, for example, have dropped almost a thousand fold since their peak in 1908. While incidence rates are very important indicators, lost worktime measures offer an alternative metric for evaluating job safety and health performance. The first objective of this study examined the distributions and summary statistics of all injuries reported to the Mine Safety and Health Administration from 1983 through 2004. Over the period studied (1983 2004), there were 31,515,368 lost workdays associated with mining injuries, for an equivalent of 5,700 person years lost annually. The second objective addressed the problem of comparing safety program performance in mines for situations where denominator data were lacking. By examining the consequences of injuries, comparisons can be made between disparate operations without the need for denominators. Total risk in the form of lost workday sums can help to distinguish between lower and higher risk operations or time periods. Method: Our method was to use a beta distribution to model the losses and to compare underground coal mining to underground metal/nonmetal mining from 2000 to 2004. Results: Our results showed the probability of an injury having 10 or more lost workdays was 0.52 for coal mine cases versus 0.35 for metal/nonmetal mine cases. In addition, a comparison of injuries involving continuous mining machines over 2001 2002 versus 2003 2004 showed that the ratio of average losses in the later period to those in the earlier period was approximately 1.08, suggesting increasing risks for such operations. Discussion: This denominator free safety measure will help the mining industry more effectively identify higher risk operations and more realistically evaluate their safety improvement programs. Impact on Industry: Attention to a variety of metrics concerning the performance of a job safety and health program will enhance industry's ability to manage these programs and reduce risk.

The importance of United States coal exports as a component of the national economy, the potential for growth of these exports, and the inter-national character of this sector of the coal industry are described in this report. The report summarizes some of the many background elements in the rise of United States coals to preeminence in highly competitive world markets. It presents some insight into this important sector of United States industry and the positive contribution of this sector to the Nation's balance of payments. It contains pertinent basic statistics on production, trade, and consumption of coal in most major markets for 1960-66. The report examines the movement of United States coals from mines to export markets, tracing and describing origins, exit ports, prices, and trends as well as inland and ocean freight rates and other data vital to an under-standing of some of the practices and complexities of the United States coal markets abroad. A brief sketch of coal production and consumption in principal importing countries is also presented with a short review of some of the more current practices and problems of these countries. Coal produced in inland areas of the. United States can be moved to and distributed economically within coal-producing countries overseas and in Canada. Quality coals from the United States can successfully compete with foreign coals in nearly any area of the world on a truly economic basis because of their high grade and their low cost which derives from the high productivity of the miner and from reasonable ocean freight rates. Because of tariffs, trade embargoes, quotas, and other restrictions, how-I ever, foreign coal markets are relatively limited. Further limitations are imposed in some countries by economic conditions which restrict all imports as a matter of financial and economic necessity. Despite these obstacles, United States coals have brought lower cost quality coals to a large segment of the foreign energy market.

The upper Arkansas basin has some of the greatest potential for geothermal development in Colorado. Over several summers, students conducted an investigation using seismic, gravity, and magnetics in order to help identify the large structures and basin fill associated with the Rio Grande Rift. Adjacent to Mount Princeton Hot Springs, near surface geophysics was conducted to help understand the faulting and fractures that act as a conduit for hydrothermal flow. The methods used included high frequency 3D seismic, magnetics, gravity, D.C. resistivity, and self potential. Throughout the Mount Princeton area, passive seismic, vertical seismic profiling, and well logging were also used to better understand the geology and activity of the region. The results indicate for the area northwest of the hot springs, a 40 to 50 m thick unconsolidated layer overlying the fractured granitic basement. The DC profile shows a deep geothermal anomaly of low resistivity which correlates with a positive SP anomaly in the same region. In the Chalk Creek valley, a shear zone extends from the north east to the south west, just south of the Chalk Cliffs. There appears to be an upward migration of the water through this shear zone which then flows along the porous sediments towards the south in this area. The deep seismic data collected in the center of the basin suggests that the depth to the basement is approximately 2000m. Also identified on the deep seismic are two major faults on the west end and two minors at the east end of the cross-section. An alteration zone is identified between the faults and a possible Precambrian northeast trending shear zone. The potential for developing an Enhanced Geothermal System (EGS) near the center of the valley is high. Our geophysical results indicate a deep basin fill near the center of the basin providing high temperatures. The range front (Sawatch) fault is observed to penetrate under the center of the basin and is an attractive target for natural fractures.

A1though the expanding Eltran1 configuration has been used in induced polarization exploration for several years, there has been little application of this method to straight resistivity problems. A comparison of results of resistivity exploration by this technique versus those obtained from Wenner configuration surveys reveals a number of advantages in interpretative resolution as well as in field operation. The application of electrical resistivity to ground-water exploration is well known.= In the past a major portion of this work has been accomplished by use of one or more variations of a technique employing the Wenner3 electrode configuration. With the introduction of the frequency domain technique of induced polarization measurements, used primarily in the exploration for disseminated sulfide deposits, there arose the need for an electrode configuration by which potentials could be measured externally to the current electrode spread in order to minimize coupling between current sending and potential receiving circuits. It was also deemed desirable that the configuration would provide information laterally along profile as well as with depth. To reach these objectives the expanding dipole-dipole configuration (which probably first was used in the electrical transient method of exploration and from which the name 'Eltran' was derived) has been adapted to induced polarization exploration. All 231 Canadian primary gold mines that produced from 1946 to 2004 were analyzed with respect to their production and economic characteristics. Trend analysis revealed that the average annual capacity of Canadian gold mines, as measured by ore processed or gold produced, has increased over time. Conversely, the average grade of gold mines has decreased over time. The distribution of gold output is highly uneven: for example, the 22 giant mines producing more than 100 t (metric tonnes) of gold account for 62% of total output. Small mines producing less than 10 t Au account for 54% of total mines, but less than 4% of total gold. Each historical mine in the database was evaluated on the basis of a set of economic and technical assumptions to determine if it would be economic to develop today. Based on the net present value using an 8% discount rate, only 103 of the 231 mines were determined to be economic. About 80% of the uneconomic mines had less than 10 t of contained gold, and 63% had less than 5 t. It is concluded that these small mines would not be viable today due to a combination of real capital cost increases, and more stringent permitting and environmental regulations. The implication is that future gold supply in Canada will hinge on the discovery and development of a new generation of larger mines. Given that only one giant mine has been discovered in the past 20 years, it seems likely that gold output will decrease in the future.

This paper deals with the influence from blast induced stress waves on the performance of shotcrete support in the Kiirunavaara mine. Time histories of stress waves from blasting were obtained from measurements during production blasts in the mine, followed by failure mapping. A finite element model, consisting of beam and spring elements, was used to calculate the shotcrete response to vibrations from blasting. The modelling approach was similar to that of a building during an earthquake, with accelerations measured in-situ used as loads. The analysis showed that the calculated adhesive stresses exceeded the strength in the interface between rock and shotcrete near to the blasted ring. It also indicated that tensile rock failure did occur. These types of failure will presumably result in ejection of joint defined rock blocks or rock slabs and will require a ductile support, such as fibre reinforced shotcrete. The predicted failure was confirmed by the mapping, which also showed that the zone of failed shotcrete was much larger in areas with plain shotcrete compared to areas with reinforced shotcrete. L’influence de l’onde de pression générée par les sautages à la mine de fer de Kiruna sur la performance du béton projeté est étudiée dans le présent article. Les ondes créées par les sautages ont été enregistrées et les domages résultants ont été cartographiés. La réponse du béton projeté aux vibrations de sautage est étudiée à l’aide d’un modèle d’éléments finis, constitué de poutres et de ressorts. L’approche est similaire à celle d’un immeuble subissant un tremblement de terre, avec les accélérations internes utilisées comme charges. L’analyse montre qu’à proximité des sautages, la contrainte adhésive dépasse la résistance de l’interface roche-béton. L’analyse confirme aussi l’existence de ruptures en tension. Ces types de rupture induisent probablement l’éjection des blocks définis par les structures du massif rocheux et requierent un support ductil, comme du béton projeté renforcé par exemple. Le type de rupture est confirmé par les observations de terrain, qui montrent aussi une extension plus importante des domages lorsque le béton projeté n’est pas renforcé. In diesem Konferenzbeitrag geht es um den Einfluss, der aus einer Sprengung hervorgerufenen Schwingungswellen auf die Ausführung der Spritzbetonverstärkung in dem Kiirunavaara Bergwerk. Die Aufzeichnungen der Schwingungswellen von Sprengungen gemäß einer Fehlerkartierung beziehen sich auf Messungen, die während der Sprengungen durchgeführt wurden. Ein Finite Elemente Modell, bestehend aus Stab- und Federelementen, wurde für die Berechnung der Spritzbetondeformation in Bezug auf die Schwingungen aus Sprengungen angewendet. Die Modellierungsmethode war ähnlich der eines Gebäudes während eines Erdbebens anhand der gemessenen Beschleunigungen vor Ort, die als Lasten benutzt wurden. Die Untersuchung hat gezeigt, dass die berechnete Haftspannung größer war als die Festigkeit in der Verbindung zwischen Gestein und Spritzbeton in der Nähe des Sprengungscentrums. Die Analyse hat gezeigt, dass die Zugfestigkeit des Gesteins versagte. Diese Arten von Versagen werden als Folge der Herausnahme von Gesteinsbrocken oder Gesteinsplatten erklärt und benötigen eine faserverstärkte Spritzbeton. Das vorausgesagte Versagen bestätigte sich beim Kartieren, welches auch zeigte, dass die Zone des versagenden Spritzbetons in Bereichen mit unverstärktem Spritzbeton viel größer war als in Bereichen mit armierten Spritzbeton.

The last issue included a discussion of recent indications of a 1983 recovery and a brief analysis of the contribution of the U.S. mining industry to the gross national product (GNP). In this issue we present sales and other data indicating the strength of the 1983 recovery and quantitatively analyze the structural shifts that have taken place in the U.S. economy and mining industry since 1972, and changes in electricity consumption by the mining industry. U.S. Economic Recovery The tentativeness in the February/March issue of Minerals and Materials regarding the strength and sustainability of the U.S. economic recovery can now be replaced with a note of increased confidence. Real growth of GNP on an annual basis in the first quarter of 1983 was 2.5 percent, compared with 1.4 percent predicted in the Economic Report of the President.1/ Preliminary second-quarter 1983 data provide further cause for optimism. Recently released data indicate that consumer spending is playing a key role in the recovery. Retail sales have increased significantly across a wide array of goods, especially consumer durables, where sales increased 4 percent from March to April (table J) and were 12 percent higher in April [ ] than the 1982 monthly average. Consumer durable sales were led by sales of building materials spurred by the growth in residential construction, motor vehicles and parts, and household durables, including appliances and furniture.

As part of the regeneration of the centre of Dublin, a multi-functional development is being constructed on the site of the historic Smithfield Fruit Market. The site is being developed in three phases, and includes one of the deepest basements (10m) constructed in Ireland to date. Until the recent improved economic climate, there has been little requirement for deep basements in Dublin, and this is the first to be constructed entirely within fluvio-glacial gravels and boulders. The difficult ground conditions led to the adoption of a diaphragm wall solution to ensure a watertight construction. Tie-back anchorages are utilised in the temporary case, and the wall is propped by floor slabs in the permanent case. Where required by high bedrock levels, the diaphragm wall is dowelled into limestone bedrock to ensure toe stability. The recorded lateral movement of the wall is significantly below that calculated by numerical analysis. Temporary bentonite cut-off walls were installed to divide the site into discrete sections. The basement was constructed as a tanked structure, and is subject to uplift water pressure. Passive tension minipiles provides an innovative alternative to the standard stressed anchorage solution. Increased contamination due to sand in spiral feed has had a negative effect on the efficiency of spiral concentrators at Navigation Plant. The no. 1 seam at Kromdraai opencast, which was previously mined by underground bord and pillar methods, is now susceptible to spontaneous combustion because of air ingress into the old workings which are exposed in the opencast high wall. This posed a risk in the loss of reserves to burnt coal. As solutions, buffer blasting of the preceding cut to collapse bords and soft overburden dressing of un-collapsed bords were implemented to prevent air entering the workings. The latter remedy resulted in increased contamination due to addition of sand in Run of Mine. After evaluating alternatives, a low capital option was selected. The 110t/hr Teetered Bed Separator (TBS) has been installed, primarily to desand and upgrade the feed to the spiral concentrators. The unit indicated an upgrade with a yield increase of 0.4% during test work and is currently showing an overall plant yield increase of 0.97%.

During the past two years, a large number of creep tests has been carried out on electrolytic lead, special assay lead and ordinary refined (Port Pirie) lead. Some of these tests have already been reported.1§ In addition, an attempt has been made to estimate the influence of the individual elements present in small traces in Port Pirie lead. The present paper gives the results obtained when small additions are made to "U" lead of the composition shown in Table 1.(which has been used throughout these investigations during the past few years). The additions were silver, antimony, bismuth and zinc. The results of the addition of tellurium have already been communicated. This investigation was intended to run parallel with a similar one using electrolytic lead as a basis and adding one element at a time.Actually, the experiments using "U" lead have got rather ahead of the others. The important point has emerged, however, that the effect of a .given addition may be appreciably influenced by the presence of traces of other elements.In most of these tests, an initial stress of 500lb. per sq. in. has been used. Whilst it is fully appreciated that this stress is higher than those used in practice, it has to be borne in mind that an improvement in creep resistance was *Manuscript received December 11th, 1936.

In 1991, local prospector C. ?Mickey? Clement recovered at least three alluvial diamonds from the Michipicoten River. Two of these stones were sent to the Department of Mineralogy, Royal Ontario Museum, where they were identified as industrial grade diamonds with weights of 1.05 and 1.13 carats. Both stones were described as frosted and graphite-inclusion riddled. In 1995, prospector Sandor Surmacz and geologist Marcelle Hauseux discovered diamonds in bedrock approximately 20 km north of the Michipicoten River. An 18.1-kg bulk sample of a xenolith-rich lamprophyre, taken from an outcrop at the side of the Trans Canada Highway north of Wawa, yielded 1 macro diamond and 5 micro diamonds. All but one was gem quality (Sage 2000). Since then, more than 36 occurrences of diamonds in bedrock have been reported in an approximately 30 km2 area centred 20 km north of the town of Wawa. The occurrences are hosted within a sequence of unusual, Archean-aged, heterolithic breccias previously considered to have no economic significance. Ten kimberlite occurrences also have been confirmed in the Michipicoten greenstone belt in the last 5 years. Two of these kimberlites are diamondiferous. To date, expenditures on property acquisition and diamond exploration in the Wawa are estimated at $120 million (CAN). This paper summarizes the geological observations made on these occurrences and discusses including the relationship between the occurrences and the regional geology.

MEANING OF TERM, The term "minerals" when used in grants or in reservations or instruments of conveyance is not limited to metals or metalliferous deposits, whether contained in veins that have well-defined walls or in beds or deposits that are irregular and are found at or near the surface or otherwise. The term "mineral" in its commercial sense has been defined as any organic substance found in nature having sufficient value sepa- rate from its situs as part of the earth to be mined, quarried, or dug for its own sake or its own specific use. It can not be said that the term "minerals" includes only such substances as are procured by tunnelling and shafting, as much gold is procured by placer mining and rich deposits of manganese and other like ores are found upon the surface of the earth and are some- times obtained without either quarrying or mining. Since the first longwall panel development started in the new mining, (Southern) area, a number of roof falls have occurred in L1 and L2 gate-entries. The longwall was delayed for a total of two months due to roof falls in the gate-entries. To prevent roof falls in future gate-entries, an extensive ground control analysis has been conducted which incorporated regional horizontal stress and panel orientation, tectonic stress, roof strata, surface stream valleys, etc. Results of the analysis indicate that a combination of these factors caused the roof falls. Therefore, a Roof Instability Rating (RIR) system was constructed to predict the roof condition and identify areas where supplemental support should be implemented. The L3 gate-entries, supported by the prediction using the RIR system, have not experienced any roof problems.

The Eskay Creek Mine is a high-grade gold and silver underground mine in northwestern British Columbia. The mine started operations in late1994. For the first three years, ore was crushed to -50 mm(-2 in.), blended to satisfy smelter terms and shipped to smelters in Japan and Canada. Preliminary evaluations indicated that a complex metallurgical facility, requiring a large capital investment, would be required to recover the precious and other economic metals. So markets for raw ore were identified and underground mining and ore transportation operations began at a production rate of 300 t/d (330stpd).

Augercast piles are formed by drilling a continuous-flight auger into the ground and, on reaching the required depth, sand-cement grout or concrete is pumped down the hollow stem as the auger is withdrawn. The sides of the hole are supported at all times by the soil-filled auger, eliminating the need for temporary casing or bentonite slurry. The augercast piling method is fast and economical; there is no vibration, very little noise and, if executed properly, no ground displacements during installation. The method is well suited to sands which are easy to drill and are readily transported up the auger. Relatively little attention has been given to augercast piles in the literature which might be part of the reason for the considerable variations in local practice, building code requirements and design methods. The purpose of this paper is to discuss some of the features of augercast pile installation that are known to influence both the structural and geotechnical capacity of the pile, to evaluate several empirical design methods and to look at some important aspects of quality control of augercast pile installation.
