Agglomeration developments in the iron ore industry of North America are closely related to shifting patterns in commercially acceptable ore grades and even the definition of iron ores. These relationships have occurred mainly during the last 20 years. Many of these changes are an outgrowth of events which involved the history of the Mesabi Range. Although magnetic taconites had been discovered in the Lake Superior area about 1870, they remained unvrorked in part for lack of concentration methods and a generally unfavorable economic climate. Some 20 years later the rich Mesabi hematites were found beginning the era of direct shipping ores which continued through World War II. These Lake Superior iron ores included reserves of an estimated three billion tons. Following World War II, decreasing ore grades and rising costs began to force the closing of many underground iron mines. The early 50's saw the beginning of the decline in direct shipping ores and a spurt in produc- tion of natural iron concentrates. However, the market for unprocessed concentrates began to decline in the early 60's as agglomerated products and foreign ore s began to dominate the U. S. market.

In attempting to tell the general public about the coal industry's land reclamation efforts, we have often said, "We're not doing things by the book, because we're still writing it." Like any good catchphrase, the statement is not only striking but true. It is particularly true in the mountains of Appalachia, where the problems of mining; and of reclamation are made more intense by the nature of the terrain. Mining and reclaiming the land "by the book' --which is to say by the methods of contour mining traditionally used in hill country--hasn't worked too well. So a lot of conscientious coal operators and associations are trying new methods--new ways of mining, new machines for seeding and planting, and new species to seed. Not all their experience can be transplanted to other areas, and of course I don't believe that Appalachia is the only place where new methods are being developed. Nevertheless, there's enough action in Appalachia to make a detailed examination rewarding, so let's focus on the hills to see what's new.

The Trolleyphone was the first successful application of carrier current techniques to a DC power distribution system to provide voice communication between fixed points and moving locomotives and traveling cranes, This was a significant breakthrough because this not only in itself provided a useful new tool for industry, but the knowledge gained in the transmission of voice communication is paving the way for many other things, chiefly, remote control and indication systems which promise to have a far reaching effect during the upcoming age of automation. Once it has been established that we can communicate between men who operate machines, the next step will be to operate the machines themselves.

The Groveland deposit, in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, consists of an E -W trending overturned syncline of Middle Precambrian Vulcan iron formation. At Groveland, the Vulcan formation can be divided into four units or facies. The total succession may be more than 550 feet thick, and consists of a basal unit composed of a lean chemical quartzite with traces of magnetite; a non-banded, partly clastic unit characterized by the preponderance of hematite over magnetite; a transition unit of well-banded magnetite-bearing iron formation interbedded with non-banded oolitic hematite; and a well-banded magnetite-quartz silicate unit at the top of the exposed sequence. The present magnetite-hematite ratios of different units within the orebody are considered to be a primary (post-diagenetic) feature of the original sediment. Subsequent regional metamorphism has increased the grain size of the original iron oxide minerals, but did not appreciably alter the oxidation state of the original sediment.

Although fraught with problems of completeness and comparability, statistical measures of mineral exploration in the United States point downward for 1985 and 1986. Exploration expenditures in the US domestic and Canadian companies have dropped steadily from a 1981 peak of about $400 million to about $190 million in 1985, according to a recent survey of exploration statistics by the Society of Economic Geologists (SEG). These totals have been adjusted to account for differences in the estimated coverage of exploration activity by each year's SEG survey. This survey is now supported by the US Bureau of Mines and the US Geological Survey (USGS). The drop in current dollar amounts does not take into account the effects of inflation, which would make the decline even more substantial. Metals Economics Group of Boulder, CO reported in its Mine Development Bimonthly that announced exploration budgets for 1986 indicated an even larger drop for the past year. Worldwide expenditures for companies covered by the report dropped from about $800 million to $750 million from 1984 to 1985 and plummeted to about $600 million in 1986. Exploration activity has been declining since about 1981. This has been due in large part to low prices for base and ferrous metals. Exploration budgets of mining subsidiaries of oil companies have plunged as parent companies try to conserve cash in the face of the sharpest decline in oil prices in nearly 40 years. Mining subsidiaries of petroleum firms that were either liquidated or divested recently include Anaconda (Arco), Getty Mining (Texaco), and Cyprus Minerals (Amoco). Exploration expenditures in Canada increased in 1984 in regions where gold is a traditional target. But there was little change in 1985, based on preliminary statistics from a federal government report (Energy, Mines and Resources Mineral Bulletin MR 211, 1986). Claim staking in Canada dropped 23% from 1983 to 1984 and declined slightly in 1985. Diamond drilling increased in 1984 to the record levels of 1980 and 1981. The ratio of exploration to development expenditures in Canada, however, fell from a 1981 peak of 0.9 to about 0.5 in 1984. The report also indicated that, since 1981, there has been a massive write-off of reserves with high production costs. Reserve levels of all major metals were down since 1981. Precious metals exploration accounts for an increasing share of total mineral exploration. For example, the SEG data show that 90% of 1985 US exploration expenses by domestic mining companies were devoted to base and precious metals, compared with only 51% in 1980. The restructuring of the mining industry has been accompanied by a decrease in response to the last two SEG annual surveys, but the trend towards precious metals was already established in earlier years. Trade journal reports suggest that the reduction of long-term interest rates has encouraged the mining industry to make cost-reducing capital investments in existing mines to maintain competitiveness. This is consistent with the observations that metals explorations in 1986 was characterized not by announcements of "grassroots" discoveries, but by on-property exploration on identified mines or prospects. In an effort to cut costs, gold mining companies have been following up on low cost production opportunities in their prospect inventories. Short-term, low risk, heap leach operations that can produce rapid returns on investment have been pursued. Introduction Traditional aggregate sources - riverbeds and alluvial fans - located close to developing urban centers are being foreclosed to mining. As sand and gravel reserves are depleted, nearby production plants cannot secure additional, adjacent reserves and are being forced to close down. The sand and gravel industry, in many respects, is its own worst enemy. It promotes development, street paving, home building, and industrial and commercial centers. Economics make us favor developments close to our operations. Thus, we encourage development by our neighbors, who soon become our detractors. Current Aggregate Mining Problems Urban development is not compatible with sand and gravel mining. Neighbors dislike the view of pits and quarries, and they complain about dust, noise, and trucking. In general, the neighbors are not happy being close to an aggregate source. This is reflected in land use or zoning laws. In most localities, mining requires a special-use permit. Public hearings are required before a legislative body. If a large group of opponents show up, legislators will often deny the land use. Urban areas are seeing traditional close-in sand and gravel sites becoming no longer available for industry. A parallel situation is also developing in most urban areas. That is, the not-in-my-backyard attitude toward landfills. As urban areas mature; a significant amount of change takes place in the physical makeup of a city. Streets and parking lots deteriorate and need repaving. Curbs and gutters need to be relocated. This necessitates a place to dispose of excess, or old, paving and structural material. Since landfills have become at least as difficult to permit as sand and gravel sites, they are becoming remote from urban areas. A significant portion of the structural material that needs to be disposed of is concrete and asphalt. This material is heavier than other materials. Thus, the cost of moving a large volume of very heavy material to a landfill becomes very expensive. In California, dump truck transportation is regulated by the State Public Utilities Commission through minimum rate tariffs. A rule of thumb for estimating the cost of such transportation is once the material is loaded, the extra kilometer (mile) costs $0.09/t ($0.08 per st). Thus, to haul an 18-t (20-st) road an extra 32 km (20 miles) will cost about $32. Because of its remote location, the cost of hauling aggregates to the point of use in an urban area becomes excessive - about the same as hauling the material to a landfill. Here is a classic example for synergism. If we could save the transportation cost of heavy demolition material by disposing it relatively close to the central city (its source), and at the same time provide an aggregate source close to the central city (its point of use), two difficult economic situations can be solved. Thus, the develop¬ment of recycling concrete and asphalt. Mining Concrete and Asphalt There are two methods of mining concrete and asphalt. The first is to pick up the old pavement in pieces. Thin, cracked pavement can usually be lifted from the grade with a front-end loader. It will break up into manageable-sized pieces. With heavier pavement, it is sometimes necessary to intentionally break it up with a stomper or heavy ripper. The pieces are loaded into heavy dump trucks and shipped to the crushing site. Discussion by D.G. Krige I read the paper "The jackknife approach" with interest. There appears to be a widespread misunderstanding of the kriging variance as a measure of the error variance of the kriged grade estimate of an ore block. Virtually all mineral deposits display skew frequency distributions and are subject to the well-known proportional effect. Thus, it is usual to find in an ore body, when subdivided a really into subpopulations, that the variances of the grades (or the total sills of the variograms) for the subpopulations will be correlated with the corresponding mean grades (usually linearly with the squares of the mean grades). Thus, the variogram will be station. When this feature is evident, the relative variograms for the subpopulations (i.e., with variogram values divided by the relevant mean squared) will be similar, or they could even be accepted at an averaged model for the whole ore body with stationarity. Using this approach, the kriging variance will reflect the relative error variance that is to be multiplied by the kriged block grade estimate squared to yield the usual kriging variance for purposes of confidential limits. The objection that the kriging variance does not take into account the local grades used for a block valuation then falls away. In the example given by the authors, the global mean grade is not recorded. But the global variance, taken at the value of the total sill, is 0.005, whereas the variance of the 11 values used in the example is 0.000152. The two variances differ by a factor of nearly six. If the relative variogram approach is applicable in this case, the need for a jackknife technique will fall away. Also note that, for skew distributions, the confidence limits for ore-block estimates will be skew as well, and symmetrical normal limits will not apply. RepIy by G.S. Adisoma and M.G. Hester There are a few interesting ways to utilize the block-by-block kriging variance that the authors have encountered. One of them is to classify a particular block into a proven-probable reserve or a possible-resource category, using a somewhat subjectively determined kriging variance value. Here, the kriging variance still represents the drilling density, i.e., data configuration more than the data values. Professor Krige mentions another ingenious approach through the use of relative variograms. This will yield a block kriging variance that takes into account local (block) grade, as he correctly points out, for purposes of confidence limits. However, we are more interested in quantifying the uncertainties associated with grade estimation in a much larger scale than a block. e.g., for a mining phase or the minable reserve. The jackknife, through the block kriging shortcut, provides a simple solution to obtain a single estimation variance for a general shape. The authors' main reference discusses different ways to handle skewed distributions typical in mineral resource estimation, e.g., the weighted jackknife approach or data transformation. Also, as with any technique, we can always improve our estimate by subdividing into smaller populations that are geologically and statistically separate domains. As we have mentioned; the jackknife is but a tool in our collection of tools to solve estimation problems. The jackknife's appeals are its simplicity and versatility. It is handy when no other solution is available, or when the available solution is not practical. It is used with other methods, not to replace them altogether. ?

The importance of coal as the major energy source has led to wider interest in the recovery of waste coal fines as a usable product. An additional incentive for fine coal recovery has been the increased emphasis on environ- mental pollution control and conservation of the nation's natural resources, Accordingly, a series of studies and tests were performed to investigate the feasibility of the recovery, concentration, balling and pelletizing of coal fines as a marketable adjunct to existing mining and beneficiation operations. These studies were conducted at the existing operations of the Eastern Coal Corporation at Stone, Kentucky, and the Metallurgical Laboratory of Arthur G. McKee & Company in Cleveland, Ohio. The purpose of the investigations was to recover the fines from the effluent waste waters of an existing preparation plant and transform them into a high carbon, low sulfur and ash product capable of being handled with a minimum of degradation and dusting problems. The fines were relatively high in ash content prior to processing, and flotation pretreatment served a combined function of beneficiation, recovery and water clarification, The minus 28 mesh coal concentrate containing 40 to 45 percent minus 325 mesh size material had an ash content varying between 5 and 7 percent and a sulfur content of less than 0.5 percent. Chemical and size analyses of the effluent and concentrated fines are presented in Table I for comparison.

In 1971, during the planning and design stages of a $300 million expansion, the Iron Ore Company of Canada Ltd. through its Engineers, Canadian Bechtel Ltd., came out with a preliminary request for two (2) 10,000 LTPH belt conveyor scale systems. These Systems were to provide weighing accuracies within 2.5% of the iron ore pellets and concentrates in transit on two (2) 72" wide conveyors from the stockpiles to the ships. Each conveyor system would be fed by a rail mounted bucket wheel reclaimer, with the conveyed material moving directly to the ship loaders with no inter- mediate surge and/or storage bins between the stockpiles and the ships. The bucket wheel reclaimer discharge rates would vary from 0-9600 LTPH in cyclic periods, with the periods varying from 1-5 minutes - dependent on the level of the reclaim buckets in relation to the stockpile as well as the slewing rate of the reclaimer. There would be frequent interruptions for bucket wheel repositioning (laterally and vertically), changing ship holds, and trimming ship holds. These frequent zero flow conditions, approximately 500 per 150,000 ton ship, could last 1-5 minutes. In addition, the conveyors on which the scales were to be mounted would be over the water and subject to the wind and cold of Northern Quebec. These Systems would be in use 350 working days of the year and would load 30,000,000 LT/yr. (An average of 90,000/working day).

Metalliferous sediments and/or saline brines have now been discovered in numerous sea floor deeps along 900 km of the axial rift zone of the Red Sea (Fig. 1). The Atlantis II Deep remains the most interesting of the the brine deeps both in terms of intensity of submarine hydrothermal processes and in terms of potential economic importance. In fact, successful completion of a pre-pilot mining test in 1979 indicates that the Atlantis II Deep may become the first deep sea base metal sulfide mine (Mustafa and Amann, 1980). Under the most optimistic scenario, the Atlantis II Mine might be established 4-6 years after completion of a year long pilot mining test in 1983-84. If established, mining would produce about 100,000 tons per day of wet mud with about 200 tons per day contained zinc, and proportional amounts of Cu and Ag. Expected mine life would be about 15-20 years (Anon., 1981). In addition to direct economic importance, the Red Sea brines and metalliferous deposits provide significant insight into exploration for sea floor brine-related ore deposits and for analogous ancient deposits. In this paper I will concentrate on the economic potential of Red Sea deposits and sea floor exploration for brine related deposits, but some ramifications of relevance to ancient deposits are extant.

The concept of the system is to minimize costly unscheduled breakdowns of equipment by replacing components earlier than their "life" expectancy. Periodic unit services are scheduled according to pre-set constraints. Service sheets are generated by matching a job and component master listing based on assigned cyclic component lives. The system can provide accountability of all man-hours reported and history information can be selectively retrieved. By reducing unscheduled equipment shutdowns, this system allows for better utilization of manpower and an overall improvement in equipment reliability and availability.

Froth flotation of coal is growing in importance and complexity. Some of the reasons for these changes follow. 1) A need exists for energy resource conservation. 2) Preparation plants are processing widely varying coal -- deep seam, strip and stockpiled either separately or as blends. 3) More fines are being generated because more mines are using automatic mining equipment. 4) It is more practical and economical to remove ash and sulfur at the preparation plant than during utilization.

During the last few years the New Lead Belt of South- eastern Missouri has become the main source of lead in the United States. It also produces significant amounts of zinc, copper, and silver. The mines are located on a narrow, mineralized trend extending southward from Viburnum, Missouri for about thirty-five miles. The area is part of the Ozark uplift and consists of steep-sided, heavily wooded hills with narrow valleys. Surface streams are very erratic, normally having low flows but becoming rushing torrents during the violent thunderstorms that occasionally occur. Because of the pristine nature of the country and the newness of the mining developments, the environmental impact of all phases has been closely watched.

The principal concepts of computer control and automation have been successfully applied in industries world-wide, The enthusiasm generated by the proponents of computer control, and the apparent mystery enveloping the techniques of computer control, have caused attention to be focused on this infant industry from all quarters. Consequently, the motivation to "computerize" may be the hope that computers will solve all economic problems. The truth remains that not only have there been monumental successes, but there have been some colossal failures. This paper will attempt to outline a generalized guide to computer control and present methods for avoiding some of the major pitfalls. Since the investment required for computer control systems has been drastically reduced in the past year, small operations will likely find that computerized process control is attractive in areas where it has never been considered before, The discussion presented here is intentionally non-technical and directed towards those who may soon find they have a possible application for a control computer. The primary purpose of computer control is to reduce expenditure and increase profits by improving the quality of product, increasing the efficiency of operation, reducing the materials and man hours required or a combination of these. Success or failure to reach the desired goal depends, to a large degree, on a well-planned approach. This includes recognizing a possible computer application, properly defining the job which is to be accomplished, evaluating computer systems, selecting a capable manufacturer, and following through with sound systems engineering and programming.

This paper presents an overview of -- the carbon-in-pulp process for gold and silver recovery as seen in the early 1980's. Traced back to its origins in the mid-nineteenth century the process development through the present state-of-the art is described. The process technology and equipment design are described in detail for the carbon-in-pulp process. A typical process flowsheet is given with a description of appropriate design criteria. Technical advantages and disadvantages as compared to the traditional countercurrent decantation process are discussed including some illustrative comparisons of capital and operating costs. A summary of currently operating carbon-in- pulp plants throughout the world is given with an insight into future developments in this industry.

It is well known that processing of the high-silicon bauxites for obtaining alumina by the hydrochemical Bayer process is irrational due to the significant losses of alumina and alkali with red mud. The main source of losses of the mentioned compounds under the conditions of leaching by the Bayer process is the formation of difficultly soluble sodium alumosilicate of the composition Na20 .Al203, 2Si02 . n H20. A conventional method of an extra recovery of alumina as well as of regeneration of alkali out of red mud is the high-temperature sintering of the latter with soda and limestone with the subsequent leaching of sodium aluminate from the sinter by water or soda solution. A sequential version of the Bayer-sintering flow chart recommended for the prosessing of bauxites with an increased content of silica is based on this method. However, the sintering method is not the only alkaline method allowing to make an extra recovery of alumina likewise of alkali from red mud. Our investigations showed/I/, that the components mentioned can be recovered by a pure hydrochemical method of treating red mud with concentrated alkaline solutions, with lime (Ca0) being present, that was earlier succesfully used in the development of the hydrochemical method of processing nepheline rocks/2/. Both bolt profile shape and spacing (rib spacing) have been found to influence the bonding capacity of the grouted rock bolt. The bolt surface profile configuration has greater importance to rock bolting in strata reinforcement in mining than the steel rebar used in civil engineering construction. This is because a rock bolt in mining usually is subjected to greater dynamic loading than the steel rebar in civil engineering construction. The increased bonding capacity of a bolt is important when supported ground is either heavily fractured, faulted or the supported ground is of soft formation, typically that of coal measure rocks. Past laboratory studies have identified the bolt profile spacing as of significant relevance to bolt resin rock bonding increase, however, no attempt has been made to determine the optimum spacing between the bolt profiles spacing. Accordingly, a series of laboratory tests were carried out on 22 mm core diameter bolts, commonly used in Australian mines, installed in cylindrical steel sleeve. The study was carried out using both push and pull testing methods. The push test was carried out in 150 mm long sleeves while the pull testing was conducted in 115 mm long sleeves. Profile spacing tested include, 12.5, 25.0, 37.5, and 50 mm lengths. Additional studies undertaken include modelling the profile of the load-displacement data of pull testing. Bolts with a profile spacing of 37.5 mm were found to provide optimum load bearing capacity as compared to other tested profile spacings.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated froth flotation techniques to remove heavy metals (Pb, Cu, and Zn) from southeast Missouri lead mill tailings. It has been estimated that southeast Missouri contains between 200 and 300 million st of Pb tailings stored above ground. The tailings were classified as two distinct types: (1) pre- 1968 tailings from the Old Lead Belt (some more than 100 years old) and (2) post-1968 tailings from the New Lead Belt. The objectives of the investigation were to reduce the Pb remaining in the tailings to (500 ppm (<0.05% Pb) and to attempt to recover a marketable concentrate to offset a portion of the remediation costs. The remaining dolomite-limestone would then be used as mining backfill or agricultural limestone. Bench- scale froth flotation removed, in percent, 95 Pb, 84 Cu, and 54 Zn, leaving 94% of the original weight containing, in parts per million, 400 Pb, 40 Cu, and 300 Zn from the Old Lead Belt tailings. Separate flotation tests also removed, in percent, 85 Pb, 84 Cu, and 80 Zn, leaving 75% of the original weight containing, in parts per million, 400 Pb, 200 Cu, and 500 Zn from the New Lead Belt tailings . Concentrates recovered from the Old Lead Belt were retreated to produce a final Pb concentrate containing 72% Pb with a cleaner flotation recovery of 79%. Froth flotation proved to be a viable method to remove the heavy metals.

Introduction The Harzwasserwerke, a public body of the Federal State of Lower Saxony, supplies drinking water to an area bordered by Braunschweig, Bremen, the Northern and the Western edges of the Harz-Mountains. From the very beginning in 1928, the Harzwasserwerke have been systematically constructing reservoirs in the western Harz which have the function of collecting and storing the frequently occuring flood waters as well as providing drinking water. The Grane-Reservoir with a capacity of 45 Million cu.m., the last of the big reservoirs, was built in 1968-1970. A system of connecting tunnels effectively enlarges the natural catchment area of this reservoir and the surplus waters of the Oker and Radau valleys - where floods occur particularly during the spring - are being conducted to the reservoir. By building the 4.800 m long "Radau-Tunnel", the waters of the Radau valley will now also be used more efficiently and its surplus waters will pass to the Grane Reservoir via this new tunnel and the Oker-Grane-Tunnel which was finished in 1970. The Project The Radaustollen has been planned and put out to tender by the Harzwasserwerke as a conventional "Freispiegelstollen". The horseshoe profile has a cross-section of 8 m2. Lining was required only in disturbed rock areas; lining of the whole tunnel was not necessary. The gradient of the tunnel is 4 % 0 rising = 25 m over the total length of 4.800 m.

This report concerns Contract No. 3B of the Port Richmond Project, for the Department of Water Resources of the City of New York. It involves the construction of 7, 000 ft. of 7 ft. finish I. D. interceptor sewer by tunneling in soft ground, as well as associated manholes, regulator chambers, siphons and miscellaneous sewers and structures, beneath a heavily travelled perimeter road in Staten Island. The Contractor is Richmond Constructors, a joint venture of Grow Tunneling Corp., sponsor, MacLean Grove & Company, Incorporated, Morrison-Knudsen Company, Inc., and Andrew Catapano Co., Inc. Project manager is Paul DeMarco, Vice-President of Grow Tunneling Corp. The cortract, as designed and bid, requires the use of liner plates 101 -0" O. D., and both cast iron and steel designs of several widths were included in the bid documents by the owner. The specifications also required the contractor to install and put into operating condition, prior to commencement of mining, a complete low pressure compressed air plant and all accessories for mining in compressed air, even though the contractor was given the option of using other methods of ground water control. A third requirement of the specifications was that a shield be used, either manual or mechanical, and with full provision for "breasting". BACKGROUND The first soft ground shield driven tunnel in the United States was in New York City and was built under Broadway in lower Manhattan in 1869
