The world-famous Sang Dong Mine in the Republic of Korea has long been one of the world's greatest tungsten ore deposits. Over the years, the development of the Sang Dong deposit has steadily increased to a point where it now exerts a great influence on the world tungsten market. The mine is located in the mountains of the province of Kang Won Do, approximately 150 miles by road due east of Seoul, the capital of the Republic of Korea. In recent years the transportation system in Korea has greatly improved and the mine is now serviced by an excellent secondary type road from the new railroad line which is 20 miles away. The Sang Dong operation is made up of the underground mining, beneficiation mill, chemical refinery, tungsten metal plant, bismuth refinery, acid plant, foundry and machine shops. The bismuthinite production from the Sang Dong Mine is also of considerable importance, The output accounts for nearly 10 per cent of the world production of bismuth. A small amount of molybdenite concentrate is also recovered from the flotation operation.

The estimated total energy demand for the U. S. is 60 quadrillion BTU for 1970 and is expected to more than double by the year 2000. Today the energy crunch is here. It is evidenced by brownouts to conserve electrical energy, and the shortage of gas and oil. Many such headlines, including suggestions for energy rationing, are in the news today. Paradoxically we have an abun¬dant source of energy in the form of coal. Energy consumers, however, are geared to use fuel in other forms. It is the intent of this presentation to discuss processes under development for conversion of the energy contained in these vast coal reserves to more usable forms. Coal conversion to synthetic fuels should be of particular interest to those engaged in mining. Coal consumption in a single conversion plant is expected to range from 10,000 to 40,000 tons per day. Plants will be located at the mine mouth and will operate continuously 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Further, many such plants will be needed., For example, looking at natural gas only, the supply/demand gap is estimated to reach 13 trillion cubic feet per year by 1985. Assuming that gas from coal conversion were to fill only 101, of this gap, 15 plants producing 250 MMSCFD would be required. These plants would consume about 90 million T/Y of coal or 135 million T/Y of lignite. It will indeed be a challenge to mine, suitably prepare, and transport coal at these projected volumes without interruption. Many ideas have been conceived for better utilization of coal and these are in various stages of development. Those supported by public money are covered by the Annual Report of the Office of Coal Research (OCR), Department of Interior. The two processes to be discussed, the Consolidation Coal Company's (Consol) C02 Acceptor Process (1)(2)(3) and The Pittsburg and Midway Coal Mining Company's (PAMCO) Solvent Refined Coal Process (4)(5) are both sponsored by OCR.

Mining companies have sharpened their refocus on their tailings management strategies in recent years. Mining companies with tailings storage facilities that use the upstream construction method have been challenged to track the evolution of industry standards, assess risks, revise design, and communicate design revisions with regulators. While many aspects of best practices and industry standards have evolved in recent years as an attribute of continual improvement, the controlling standard in the design of many upstream dams is understanding the foundational strengths of hydraulically deposited tailings. Following best practices and industry standards, Hibbing Taconite Company managed by Cleveland-Cliffs, began the re-evaluation of foundation strengths underlying a system of upstream dams at the company’s iron ore mine tailings storage facility in northern Minnesota. Initial steps in the re-evaluation require reanalysis of design parameters and recommendations by the Engineer of Record to the Owner, which was followed by a series of meetings with the Technical Review Board to determine an initial path forward. Once a path forward and preliminary design parameters were determined, the Owner engaged with the State Dam Safety Engineer to discuss and seek approval of the plan. With continuous regulatory engagement throughout the process, further refinement of the design parameters for the hydraulically-placed tailings foundations underlying upstream dams began with field and lab geotechnical investigations. Following a review of risk assessments and trigger actions response plans, Hibbing Taconite revised its tailings storage facility operating plans and budget for the coming years. Based on the findings of the re-evaluation, reanalysis, and refinement of parameters, a paradigm shift was realized with the hydraulically placed tailings foundation strengths underlying the upstream system of dams. This paper explores the path that the Hibbing Taconite Company followed to understand the paradigm shift and construct downstream improvements. The plan involved tailings re-characterization, dam design revisions, operating plan reconciliation, budget revisions, wetland permitting, dam safety permit amendments, storm water prevention plans, borrow materials studies, new concrete decant structures and the pursuit to recognize and be consistent with industry standards.

The total iron ore production in Sweden in 1969 was 33.3 million metric tons. 31.7 million tons were exported mainly to Western European countries. 27.8 million tons (87 per cent) originated from the mines at Kiruna, Svappavaara and Malmberget, located just north of the Arctic Circle in Sweden. Planned production for 1970 is 25 million tons during 10 months, due to a strike at the beginning of the year. Present production plans for the next five years expect an annual export capacity around 33 million tons in 1975, including 5.7 million tons of pellets. The mining and shipping at the loading terminals of Narvik on the Atlantic coast and Luleå at the Gulf of Bothnia are managed by LKAB - a 96 per cent state-owned company. 4 per cent of the share capital is owned by the private Grängesberg Company. The railway - 106 miles from Kiruna to Narvik and 130 miles from Malmberget to Luleå - is operated by the State Railways in Sweden and Norway. Comprehensive expansion of the Narvik ore port will be carried through during the next five years to increase the annual shipping capacity to at least 35 million tons and meet the development of rapidly growing ship sizes.

The rapid decay and disfiguring of stone monuments in urban and desert rural areas has challenged conservators to protect stone surfaces from premature decay. They attempt to halt the natural process of stone decay and possibly to restore the original strength lost mostly by chemical weathering and the loss of binding cement. Ageneral solution is not possible because the physical and chemical characteristics must be considered for different stone types. The failures of stone preservation and restoration are greater in number than the cures. The need for repair of stone decay goes back to evidence of Roman replacement of decaying stone. The presence of excess water in buildings has long been recognized. Moisture tends to enter masonry from air in humid climates, a most important but often underrated factor (Fig. 1) suggesting that sealing should be the answer. Undesirable staining and efflorescence result in accelerated scaling. Today, the great variety of chemicals available to the modem conservator for sealing. consolidating, or hardening stone fall into two very different categories: surface sealers and penetrating stone consolidants, or a combination of both. SEALERS Sealers develop a tight, impervious skin which prevents access of moisture. Surface sealing has saved monuments from decay by eliminating the access of atmospheric humidity. Pressure tends to develop behind the stone surface by moisture escape. Efflorescence, crystal growth action, and freezing can cause considerable spalling (Anderegg, 1949). Flaking results when moisture is trapped behind the sealed surface. Yellowing and blotchiness are also frequently observed. The following sealants are in common use today: linseed oil, paraffin, silicone, urethane, acrylate, and animal blood on stone and adobe. Extensive cracking and yellowing has resulted soon after application. In the past many such treatments have created more problems than cures: 1. Linseed oil and paraffin have been in use for centuries. Embrittlement and yellowing occur rapidly because these are readily attacked by solar ultraviolet radiation. 2. Animal blood as paint has temporarily waterproofed adobe mud and stone masonry. The origin of blood paint has a religious background rooted in the Phoenician and Hebrew cultures. Instant water soluble dried blood can substitute for fresh blood. Winkler (1956) described the history and technique of the use of blood. 3. Silicones have proven very effective and are long lasting. In contrast, acrylates, urethane, and styrene are generally rapidly attacked by UV radiation (Clark et al., 1975). Sealing of Different Rock Types Granitic rocks have a natural porosity traced to 4.5% contraction of quartz, during cooling of the parent magma, compared with only 2% contraction of all other minerals; protection against the hygric forces may require waterproofing of granite in some in- stances. The Egyptian granite obelisk in London is an example. Soon after its relocation from Egypt to London, Cleopatra's Needle was treated, in 1879, with a mixture of Damar resin and wax dissolved in clear petroleum spirit; surface scaling became evident after half a year of exposure to the humid London atmosphere. The treatment of the ancient granite monument from Egypt has denied access of high relative humidity (RH) in London to the trapped salts inherited from the Egyptian desert and has protected the monument from decay (Burgess and Schaffer, 1952). The sister obelisk set up in Central Park, New York City, has fared less favorably because similar treatment was done too late, only after the salts hydrated and hundreds of kilograms of scalings disfigured the obelisk surface (Winkler, 1980). Surface coating of other common stones may be needed. Crystalline marble absorbs moisture from high RH atmospheres: dilation may ensue when curtain panels bow as the moisture starts to expand during daily heating-cooling cycles. A good sealer may prevent the moisture influx provided that no moisture can enter from the inside of the building. Limestones, dolomites and all carbonate rocks are subject to dissolution attack by rainwater, especially in areas where acid rain prevails (Fig. 2). The interaction of sulfates in the atmosphere with the stone can be halted by waterproofing to avoid the formation of soft and more soluble gypsum. The stone surface attack can be diminished if nearly insoluble Ca-sulfite crusts can form, instead of Ca-sulfate. Replacement of fluorite or barium compounds at the stone surface acts as a hardener, rather than a sealant. Sandstones have generally high porosity and rapid water travel can occur along unexpected routes and from any direction. Any surface sealing may do more damage by scaling and bursting than if the stone is left without treatment. Sealing of sandstones is therefore not advised at any time. Testing the efficiency of sealants: Several authors discuss waterproofing materials, silicones, urethanes, acrylates and stearates, as to their water absorption, spreading rates of water on the treated surface, water vapor transmission, resistance to efflorescence, and general appearance (Clark et al., 1975). De Castro (1983) measured the angle of contact of a microdrop (0.004 cm3) on a stone surface as characteristic of the wettability. INTRODUCTION A safe heat stress control strategy for an underground mine has three elements: Application of an environmental measure which reflects physiological strain with sufficient accuracy for the range of conditions encountered underground. Acceptance of a functional relationship between the environ- mental measure and human performance which is used to optimise the environmental conditions achievable with either ventilation or ventilation and refrigeration. A management control strategy based on the environmental measure which is designed to ensure that work in environments where excessive physiological strain may occur is prevented and corrective action is initiated. The environmental measure that reflects physiological strain is the link between the three elements and, since the turn of the century, the discussion of the merits of various indices has been prolific. One problem in selecting a suitable measure or index is the ease with which it can be physically obtained relative to accurately reflecting the physiological strain. For example, wet bulb temperature is simple to measure and, for a particular mining sys- tem, it may adequately represent physiological strain, however, it would not necessarily provide the same relatively safe measure in a different mining system. The acceptance of a measure which can be universally applied has been confounded by both development and predisposition. That is not to say that there is only one "correct" measure and all others are unsuitable. It is self evident that if the application of a particular index has resulted in adequate control, then that mea- sure is correct for that situation. However, an understanding of the limitations is necessary to ensure that adequate control is maintained as mining conditions change. Almost 100 years after the question of heat stress in mines started to be dealt with in a collective manner, an analysis of the available information is leading towards a general strategy to control this problem. In the paper, the developments in heat stress assessment are briefly examined and followed since the earliest published observations on the effect of heat in mines (Haldane, 1905), efforts to determine a relationship between an environmental measure and human performance are reviewed and summarised and the benefits of control strategies such as acclimatisation and shortened shifts are discussed as they relate to Mount Isa Mines. The results of testing the prototype air cooling power instrument are discussed and a heat stress control strategy outlined. HEAT STRESS AND AIR COOLING POWER The operation of the human engine is analogous to other engines where the conversion of chemical energy from the oxidation of fuel to useful mechanical energy is not 100% efficient. In a diesel engine it is about 33% and in a human engine less than 20% resulting in at least five times as much heat produced by the meta- bolic process as useful work done. Metabolic energy production is related to the rate at which oxygen is consumed and is about 340 W for each litre of oxygen per minute. Using measured oxygen consumption and an average body surface area of 2.0 m2, the approximate metabolic energy production associated with different mining tasks is (Morrison et al. 1968):- • Rest, 50 W/m2 • Light work, 75 to 125 W/m2 (machine, LHD or drill jumbo operators) • Medium work, 125 to 175 W/m2 (airleg drilling, light construction work) • Hard work, 175 to 275 W/m2 (barring down, building bulkheads and timbering) • Very hard work, over 275 W/m2 (shovelling rock) Heat balance is achieved when the rate of producing heat (the metabolic heat production rate) is equal to the rate at which the body can reject heat mainly through radiation, convection and evaporation. Heat exchange between the lungs and the air in- haled and exhaled is normally less than 5% of the total and there- fore usually ignored. Any heat not rejected to the surroundings will cause an increase in body core temperature. Since heat stress is related to the balance between the body and the surrounding thermal environment, the main parameters required to be known when determining acceptable conditions are those associated with the heat production and transfer mechanisms. These can be summarised as follows: Metabolic heat production rates (M - W) Skin surface area (A3) (and effects of clothing) Dry bulb temperature (t[ ]) Radiant temperature (t[ ]) Air velocity (V) Air pressure (P) Air vapour pressure (e [ ]) The rate of heat transfer to or from the environment depends on the equilibrium skin temperature t, and the sweat rate S,. These in turn depend on the response of the body to the imposed heat stress and the effect of thermoregulation (Stewart, 1981). Thermoregulation The body contains temperature sensitive structures which send impulses to the brain at a rate depending on the temperature. Both hot and cold signals can be differentiated and the thermoregulatory response ahivated according to which signal pre- dominates. If "cold" signals are dominant, body heat loss is re-

The United States began exporting coal in the late 1800'5, at first in very small quantities to Canada and beginning in 1897 and 1896, to the east coast of South America. Shipments to European countries began on a very limited basis in 1902 and these shipments increased gradually until World War One when shipments overseas increased from the 8 million tons per year level to 22 million tons. After the war exports dropped as fast as they had increased and, with the exception of exports to Canada, remained at very low levels until just after World War 11 when the United States again emerged as a major coal exporter. World War II left the coal industries of Europe in ruin. As the United States was the only country able to supply the large quantities of coal at reasonable prices needed for reconstruction of the European economy, the U. S. coal exports overseas expanded rapidly to 42.5 million tons in 1947. Additionally, we shipped 25 -2 million tons of coal to Canada In that year for a total export of 68.7 million tons. Unfortunately, that level was not reached again until 1957 when exports reached an all-time high of 76 .4 million tons- -a high I might add that has not been reached since.

Using a mine roof simulator press capable of duplicating the expected magnitude of vertical and horizontal forces experienced by underground mine roof supports, load capabilities of some roof support cribbings were measured. Comparative ultimate vertical support strengths are reported for cribs of old and new timber and nonreinforced and steel-fiber-reinforced (SFR) concrete blocks. In terms of load- bearing capability, cribs of new hickory and nonreinforced concrete blocks have about equal strength, and SFR concrete blocks are three times as strong. Wood aged 2 years underground lost 43 pct of its support strength. These data were obtained during the course of the initial familiarization exercise of the complex press.

Roof bolter operators may be exposed to high respirable dust concentrations on continuous miner sections with blowing face ventilation when bolting is performed downwind of the continuous miner. One solution to reduce the high respirable dust concentrations is to use a canopy air curtain (CAC) to deliver clean air from a filtered blower fan directly to the bolter operators under the canopies. The influence of CAC installation in the airflow and dust dispersion around the location of the roof bolter operator can be evaluated by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). This study, performed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), considers two scenarios: (1) a roof bolting machine in the center of the entry for installation of the fifth row of bolts from the face, and (2) a roof bolting machine positioned close to the face for the installation of the last row of bolts. In both scenarios, the bolting machine is placed in an environment which contains 6.0 mg/m3 of respirable dust and is ventilated by a blowing curtain with 3,000 cfm (1.42 m3/s) of air. This environment is used to simulate the roof bolter machine operating downstream of a continuous mining machine. Two operation positions are simulated at the same bolting location: dual drill heads in the inward position for two inside bolts; and dual drill heads in the outward position for two outside bolts. The influence of the CAC on airflows and dust dispersion is evaluated with the CAC operating at 250 cfm (0.12 m3/s). INTRODUCTION Roof bolting machines are used to drill bolt holes into the roof of an underground mine at specified patterns and to install roof bolts to secure the roof from falling. At times, the roof bolting machine is also used to install rib bolts; however, only the roof bolting operation was considered in this simulation. Though the roof bolting operation drastically improved the safety of miners from roof falls, some roof bolter operators are experiencing health problems associated with respirable dust. Based on recent statistics [1], following a low point in the late 1990s where the prevalence of coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP) in miners with 25 years or more tenure was approximately 5%, CWP now exceeds 10% for miners with 25 years or more of tenure. In central Appalachia (Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia), 20.6% of long-tenured miners have CWP and 4.5% have progressive massive fibrosis, the most severe form of CWP. CWP, also known as black lung, is an occupational respiratory disease that has no cure and can ultimately be fatal. The only way to prevent the incidence of black lung is to eliminate miners’ exposure to respirable coal mine dust. Current U.S. regulations require that the overall respirable dust concentration to be 1.5 mg/m3 or less for a full-shift sampling if respirable quartz is not present; otherwise, the standard is 10 divided by the percent quartz (not to exceed the 1.5 mg/m3 respirable dust standard) [2, 3].

The Mission Unit of American Smelting and 'Refining Company is located in Pima County, Arizona, approximately twenty miles southwest of the City of Tucson. The Unit consists of an open pit copper mine and concentrator. The concentrate is shipped by rail to Company Smelters at Hayden, Arizona, or El Paso, Texas Mine stripping began at Mission in the fall of 1959, and construction of the 15,000 tons per day concentrator gas started in the spring of 1960, The first ore was treated in mid summer of 1961 and full ore production was reached in August of 1961. At that time over 46,000,000 tons of material had been moved from the pit. Current production (ore and waste) averages over 100,000 tons per day. Total production to date (ore and waste) over 120,000,000 tons.

There is no single mining problem at Benson that does not exist at some other mine. There are four, however, that require special attention primarily because they occur together and have an influence on each other. These are the nature of the mineral occurrence, the shape of the ore body, the operating schedule, and the climate. It is the purpose of this paper to describe mining practices in relation to these four factors. Iron ore was first noticed in the Star Lake area early in the nineteenth century. Prior to Jones and Laughlin leasing the facilities built by the Defence Plant Corporation, several companies tried to mine the ore body but gave it up as uneconomical. While there is a little high grade (40%) magnetite, most of the ore contains 20 to 25% iron and not enough was known prior to World War II to design a profitable operation. By 1943, and certainly in the years that followed, technological developments in ore dressing and mining not only put the magnetite into the category of a commercial ore, but made possible the concentration of the non-magnetic iron mineral, martite. This last development nearly doubled the ore reserve. Jones and Laughlin bought the DPC holdings in 1946 and has since expanded the plant to its present capacity of 4,400 gross tons of concentrates daily or 1,600,000 gross tons per year. Magnetite makes up 62% of this production at the present time, but it will be necessary before long to bring martite production up to about 45% of the total because of the ratio of the two ores in the reserves. To keep the plant supplied, 14,000 to 15,000 tons must be mined and crushed daily, with a ratio of concentration that varies from 2.8 to 3.4. The ore body is 12,000 feet long and varies in width from 600 to 1,500 feet. The waste rock is, for the most part, a granite gneiss, and the overburden, of which little is left, is a glacial drift sand. For the entire reserve, there is a half ton of rock for every ton of concentrate, but the stripping ratio is more than one to one at present because of the existence of more rock in the upper mining levels in relation to the ore. The dirt stripping or development work that cannot be handled by company facilities is contracted to an outside firm. The need for this diminishes every year and will soon disappear. The deposit looks like a "J" in plan, with the long leg running approximately north and south and the short leg to the west. The primary crushing plant, consisting of a 54" gyratory followed by two 18" gyratories and a 1,500 foot conveyor belt to the fine crushers, is located on the third level where the long and short leg of the mine meet. The widest part of the pit lies just the north of the crusher. The mine is operated on a lease that expires in 199l0 There are two fee owners, the Benson Iron Company, which owns slightly overhlf of the reserves, and the Newton Falls Paper Company, which owns the balance. There is no appreciable difference in the mining on the two fees, so the ore is removed in strict proportion to calculated reserves during each year. Basic mining equipment consists of eight 45 yard electric shovels, a fleet of twenty-five 22 ton end dump trucks, eleven churn drills for nine inch blast holes, and two small percussion drills for four to five inch holes, There are the normal auxiliary items, such as dozers, graders, wagon drills, and two drop-ball cranes. Power is purchased and, where practical, is used at 4100 volts. Pit drainage pumps can handle a maximum of 11,500 GPM from the several sumps, but water is a problem only during the spring or when a sudden thaw follows a heavy snowfall.

INTRODUCTION In open-pit mining of high grade ores, operators of mining equipment in a pressurized cab are protected from inhaling radioactive aerosols by the use of filtered air through a pre-impactor and a HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filter. At present, a limited amount of scientific information is available on the worker exposure to airborne alpha emitters in the mining of high-grade ores. (Miller, 1977, Nielson, et al, 1979). Factors affecting the worker exposure to alpha radiation are: the grade of uranium containing ores, the environmental conditions inside the mine pit, the protection factor of the cab filter system, the workers' attitude towards the hazards of radioactivity and the adopted contamination control in the cabs. Four series of field samplings were conducted during the fall of 1980 and the summer of 1981 at a mining site in northern Saskatchewan to investigate the extent of protection an equipment operator has against cab internal exposure to airborne alpha emitters with short and long half-life radionuclides. The variation in the breathing zone concentrationnof aerosols as a result of resuspension is discussed, however no attempt was made to isolate and investigate the factors and the associated parameters of the aerosol resuspension phenomenon. AEROSOL RESUSPENSION IN A CAB Mechanisms of Resuspension [Sources]: The presence of radioactive aerosols inside a cab and in the breathing zone of an operator may be due to initial concentration inside [(CO)], concentration in the filtered (HEPA) air (CC, at the flow rate [QC]), the concentration of the aerosol through resuspension ([CR]), the aerosol concentration in the air outside the cab ([CE]) and the concentration of the aerosol in the leaking air [(CL)], at the flow rate of [(QL)]. [Volumetric Equilibrium]: Assuming a uniform concentration of the aerosol in the cab, the aerosol concentration in the breathing zone[ (CBZ)] may be expressed as, [CBZ+CO+CC+CR-CL] If [QC] remains greater than [QL], there is pressurization in the cab. There is particle loss as a result of the leaking air from the tight cab, however the condition of adequate pressurization ensures that [CL ~ CC]. Also for dust particles filtered through HEPA [CC – 0] thus [CBZ + CO + CR] For the radioactive gases, [CBZ - CO + CC] Over long periods,[ CBZ – CE] but if [CBZ] exceeds the value of CE then the aerosol build-up in the cab has, occurred. [Resuspension]: Turbulent bursts are generated within the core region of a cab confinement, such that the down sweeps and the up sweeps of the air bursts cause resuspension of dust from the surfaces. Particles initiate resuspension by four major modes: namely, sliding, rocking, rolling, bouncing or sudden ejection or by combinations of these. Nevertheless the adhesion force between the particles and the surface must be overcome by ejection forces before ejection takes place (Kline et al, 1967, Corino and Bradkey 1969, Kim et al 1971). The phenomenon of particle resuspension from a surface may be expressed in a generalized form as: CR =f (Uz . R . D . H) where CR = Rate of particle resuspension UZ = Surface shear velocity R = Surface roughness parameter D = Aerodynamic diameter of particle H = Frequency of surface airburst A detailed discussion of the individual parameters was attempted for the case of farm tractor cabs by Atiemo (1981), such a treatment is out of the scope of this study. Only the effects of the properties of surface roughness will be discussed. Effect of Surface Properties The roughness of the surface from which dust particles are ejected plays a significant role in the deposition and resuspension of the dust. The roughness or the amount of protrusions greatly influence the intensity of air turbulence in the immediate vicinity of the surface (Schmel 1976). For most roughened surfaces therefore, larger particles may be dislodged in greater quantities than smaller particles. The deposition and the resuspension of dust particles from different surface materials of glass, cloth, metal and rubber have been studied in a wind tunnel (Atiemo, 1981). Introduction Minicomputers have been gaining acceptance in mining. Low cost interactive processing and plotting can now be controlled by geologists or engineers needing rapid solutions and specialized mining software in formats that allow noncomputer personnel to readily interact with computer processes. User-oriented programs maximize the use of interactive display features and graphics, as shown by the HP9845 minicomputer, a unit with portability, processing power, graphics capabilities, capacity, and peripherals such as plotters, digitizers, disk drives, and printers. Application Coal exploration projects require that much effort be spent determining coal volumes within trial pit limits. This determines a prospect's viability and potential. Adapting volume calculations to a computer has been limited, since it was difficult to create reasonable representations of complex coal seam geometry with a digital process. So many of the simple mechanical procedures needed to produce pit reserves are still performed manually by geologists and engineers. But with new minicomputers and their interactive graphics, it is now practical to accurately model complex structures without tedious calculations. GEOSEM (Geomin Seam Oriented Exploration System) is a computer system designed to analyze coal prospects. The system shows how a coal prospect, with complex geology, can be quickly analyzed, modeled, displayed, and evaluated for mineable reserves. Its interactive graphics allow rapid visual presentation of data, high-speed tabular reports, and precision plotting. The system is most effective when used by a geologist or engineer who selects the required operations and specifies relevant parameters via screen and keyboard interaction. Rolling Hills The Rolling Hills prospect represents a typical Rocky Mountain coal deposit. Enough geological interpretation has been done to show a complex system of block faulting with coal seams following synclines of stratified lithologies. With the completion of initial drill hole exploration, questions arose concerning coal volumes and strip ratios involved with various pit limits. Quality information had been gathered on the coal intercepts. It was decided that coal vol¬umes and pit designs were of prime importance. The objective was to enter and display data, create a computer model based on interpretation, develop pit designs, compute seam/ waste volumes, and report various contents. The project, begun by entering data in the GEOSEM system, was completed in several days. Data Entry For modeling, the prime information was seam identity and drill hole intercept. Other information-rock type, Btu rating, and percent of ash, sulfur, and moisture-was also available. It, too, was entered into the data base through the computer keyboard and then reported, verified, and corrected. Various reports can be produced, according to user specified sort parameters. For example, from an analysis of available data, only 14 intercepts could be found with Btu value greater than 8000 and sulfur content less than 0.4%. The sort option can also be used prior to entry into the analysis routines. Data Analysis Though the objective was to create a seam model and compute reserves, it became necessary to project quality information into unsampled areas. Statistical analysis was then war-ranted. A typical analysis correlated the lack of relationship between percentage of ash and Btu. Although histograms were also produced, these typified a lack of samples and "ragged" distributions. A geostatistical analysis was also applied, showing the results of computing a 2-D variogram on the largest coal seam. Results showed an average range of 18 m, with a poorly defined variogram. Data Display and Drafting Scaled plans and sections were required so seam locations could be compared to hand drawn interpretations and drill coordinates verified. At the same time, topography could be interpolated from collar elevations to determine whether surface control points were needed for better definition. In addition, a new set of 50 final-scale drawings were required, showing new drilling information. By using the computer screen as a "scratch pad" device, various sections were displayed and then plotted on a drum plotter at the desired scale for overlay on original sections. INTRODUCTION The United States Uranium Registry (USUR) tissue program was funded in 1978 by the United States Department of Energy (DOE) through its Human Health and Assessments Division, and registrant enrollment began in 1980. It is operated by Hanford Environmental Health Foundation (HERF), Richland, Washington, with support provided by Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL).** The USUR tissue program is the first systematic effort to contact and gain assistance of workers occupationally exposed to uranium and to seek and study uranium deposition in human tissue. This paper describes the program objectives, populations selected for study, procedures for enrolling workers in the program, types of tissue to be studied, and analytical procedures to be used. PROGRAM OBJECTIVES The objectives of the USUR tissue program are to: 1) Determine the distribution and concentration of uranium, if any, in the tissues of occupationally exposed workers. 2) Compare bioassay measurements of exposed individuals with the results of analyses of tissues obtained at autopsy. 3) Seek evidence of histopathologic changes related to any uranium deposition that may be present. 4) Conduct analyses of whole bodies, when available, to obtain more precise data on the uranium burdens, if any, in the body and organs, and especially the distribution in parts of the body, such as the skeleton, that are not usually accessible for sampling. 5) Develop data that will assist in evaluating a) the accuracy of current in-vivo measurement techniques, b) the propriety of existing regulations, and c) the adequacy of current protection programs. SELECTION OF POPULATIONS FOR STUDY Selection of the populations for the USUR tissue program was based on studies of the United States Uranium Registry described elsewhere (0c81). Potential populations for study were quite varied because of occupational exposure to different chemical forms of uranium, different levels and eras of exposure, varying ability to identify populations exposed in the past, and the general interest and cooperativeness of the populations. Nevertheless, certain identifiable populations emerged that were both willing to participate in the study and likely to provide useful information. Among the targeted populations are individuals who were exposed to uranium prior to the existence of modern exposure standards. These individuals are presently being enrolled by the USUR. The reliability of concentration and distribution data and the demonstration of effects are more likely in such individuals than in those who have received less exposure. However, the targeted groups also include individuals who Have been exposed to permissible levels of uranium, and reference employees in uranium plants who have not worked with uranium. The lesser exposures are of immediate interest because of the rarity of heavy exposures under current standards. The sampling of potentially exposed individuals with negative in-vivo measurement results may serve to check the adequacy of in-vivo measurements in the detection of deposition. [ENROLLMENT PROCEDURE] The enrollment of participants follows three patterns. 1) Presently employed workers are enrolled by the cooperative efforts of USUR staff with the medical, industrial relations, and/or health physics personnel of the uranium facility. Volunteers may be enrolled by medical personnel at the time of their physical examination or by health physics personnel at the time of a bioassay or lung counting procedure. Follow-up after initial contacts with currently employed uranium workers is carried out by on-site personnel, but subsequent follow-up is the responsibility of the Registry. 2) Retired workers are contacted by mail, with a covering letter from their former employer supporting the principles of the study but leaving participation in the program on an entirely voluntary basis. 3) An alternate method of enrollment is to obtain a USUR autopsy consent after death from the next of kin. As part of enrollment in the program, permission is requested for access to the individual's medical and exposure data, and a short occupational history is filled out. The autopsy permission agreement signed by the individual is for an initial period of 5 years; the USUR ordinarily seeks renewal of the agreement upon its expiration. While this agreement provides

The reliable quality assessment of grouting operations is one of the key issues in establishing impermeable grout curtains around shafts, drifts and tunnels. Reliable opera¬tional information on the decrease in the permeability of rock during the grouting process facilitates the assessment of the effectiveness of the completed curtain and assures production quality. Quality control and assurance also fa¬cilitates the early detection and elimination of possible de¬fects in the grout curtain. Thorough control of the grouting process provides the capability to evaluate decreases in the permeability of water-producing fracture zones prior to the beginning or the continuation of excavation of the shaft, tunnel or drift. In order to achieve this objective, post¬grouting hydrodynamic investigations are conducted prior to the initiation or re-initiation of work on the underground workings to measure the decrease in the permeability coef¬ficient of aquifers during grouting operations. 8.1 QUALITY ASSURANCE AND CONTROL OF THE ISOLATION OF ROCK BY GROUTING THROUGH HOLES DRILLED FROM THE SURFACE Quality assurance and control are based on measuring the decrease in the permeability coefficient of water-pro¬ducing horizons as a result of injecting grout into the drill¬holes. For this purpose, the value of the acceptable residual permeability coefficient is calculated beforehand based on the acceptable value of ground water inflow into the shaft, drift or tunnel as specified by the "construction norm and integrated practice (SNIP)" (Anon., 1976). Having ob¬tained the values of aquifer thickness, permeability, and head distribution for each aquifer from flowmetric data (dis¬cussed in Chapter 3), the average value of the permeability coefficient of all aquifers intersected by the shaft is calcu¬lated as [ ] where Ki is the permeability coefficient of the "ith" aqui¬fer; Pi is the pressure of the "ith" aquifer; and M; is the thickness of the "ith" aquifer. The total expected inflow of ground water into the shaft is [ ] where RK is the radius of the contour of influence; RCFB is the radius of the shaft; and p is the coefficient of dynamic viscosity of the ground water. The necessary reduction of the coefficient of permeabil¬ity of the aquifer [ ] where Q is the expected inflow of ground water into the shaft from eq. 8.2; Q.-fin is the acceptable inflow of ground water; and a is the safety factor. By knowing the average permeability value of the rock and the permeability reduction coefficient, it is possible to determine the value of the acceptable residual permeability coefficient for all the aquifers [ ] The values of the permeability coefficient, pressure, and thickness for each aquifer are determined from the data gathered during the hydrodynamic investigations conducted in grout holes prior to beginning the grouting operations as discussed in Chapter 3. After injecting the grout into the first of the holes, the injection into each of the following grout holes is preceded by repeated hydrodynamic investi¬gations. Using the data obtained for each water-producing zone, a graph is constructed where the numbers representing the grout holes in their order of grouting are placed on the abscissa, and the values of the aquifer permeability coeffi¬cient are placed on the ordinate (Fig. 103). This curve char¬acterizes the change in permeability of the given hydro¬stratigraphic unit as grouting operations are completed, one hole at a time. The results of grouting operations are considered to be positive when each sequential observation records a steady decrease in the permeability of the aquifer. The permeabil¬ity measured prior to the injection of the grout into the last hole must be lower than or equal to the acceptable perme¬ability as determined by the application of eqs. 8.1 through 8.4. Table 8.1 presents illustrative data on the hydrogeo¬logic properties of aquifers at a mine shaft prior to the initiation of grouting operations. Data also are presented on the reduction in the permeability coefficient during the in¬jection of the grout. The shaft in question intersects eleven aquifers. Based on data concerning aquifer pressure, thick¬ness, permeability, and the expected inflow rate of water for each of the strata, the average permeability coefficient is calculated according to eq. 8.1 as K = 0.2 x 10-12 m2. P.L. 95-87 contains explicit demands for land-use planning in its reclamation and designation sections. Both sections require recognition of local land-use plans; however, the sections are not well integrated. Accommodations to these planning requirements may be found in suggestions based on British mineral planning practice. Better links can be created among local land-use planners, the state's permitting authority and designation office, and mine designers. Mining companies should take more interest in local land-use plans and in resource inventories; states should consider devolving to local government responsibility for accepting mine permit applications and designation of unsuitability petitions.

The concept of mobile crushers is not new. Since their introduction about twenty-five years ago, mobile crushers have continued to gain widespread attention. Mobile crushers reduce minerals in the open pit mine to sizes which can be transported by belt conveyors thereby reducing or eliminating the need for truck haulage. Truck haulage is costly, often representing as much as 50% of the total mining cost. More than 80% of the cost of truck haulage is for fuel and lubricants, tire replacements, and operators' wages, and it can be anticipated that the cost of these items will continue to increase at a steady pace. Compared to truck haulage, transportation by belt conveyor is more energy-efficient, less labor-intensive, and less subject to inflation. Therefore, mobile crushers, used in conjunction with belt conveyor systems, offer one of the most effective available methods of reducing energy consumption and mining costs,

Separation of valuable constituents from a complex mineral mixture was examined. Nitric acid leaching produced a solution containing copper, zinc, iron and a large proportion of silver. The residue contained antimony, lead, the remaining silver and elemental sulfur. A caustic sodium sulfide leach dissolved the antimony from the residue, producing an insoluble, high-grade silver-lead product and a filtrate for electrolytic recovery of antimony. The pH of the primary filtrate was raised, precipitating the iron and leaving a solution containing the copper, zinc and the soluble portion of the silver, which would be recovered by conventional means.
