BP Minerals America (BPMA) has completed its $400 million modernization of Kennecott Utah Copper's Bingham Canyon mine. Modernized facilities include the in-pit crusher, conveyor, ore storage area, concentrator, ore pipe-line, and tailings pipeline. With modernization, Kennecott will achieve substantial cost reductions. Bingham Canyon is now one of the lowest cost copper producers in the world. And the mine will continue to provide jobs and income in Utah for another 30 years or more. The Modernization Project began in February 1986. The work took 33 months. In late 1987, the construction force peaked at 1100 workers. Kennecott Utah Copper now employs a permanent work force of 2100 employees. Less equipment and more efficiency The modernization work has increased the scale of the facilities that transport and process copper ore. A large, continuous transport system has replaced multiple haulage units. Fewer but larger pieces of equipment have replaced many crushing, grinding, and flotation units. The result is less maintenance, fewer employees, and improved metal recoveries. About one-third of the $400 million modernization project is directed at improving ore movement by eliminating rail transport. The new concentrator accounts for the remaining two-thirds of the modernization investment. The modernized plant was started up in stages. In February, ore was fed to the crusher. By the end of March, the three grinding lines were operating and the flotation circuit was producing copper concentrate. In July, the design through-put rate of 70 kt/d (77,000 stpd) was reached. October saw the achievement of targeted metal recoveries that corresponded to the fully modernized operation. It is estimated that Bingham Canyon will annually produce 181 kt (200,000 st) of refined copper, 9.3 t (300,000 oz) of gold, 71 t (2.3 million oz) of silver, and 5.4 kt (12 million lb) of molybdenite. Current Bingham Canyon production is about 97 kt/d (107,000 stpd) and a similar amount of overburden. Some 70 kt/d (77,000 stpd) of ore are processed through the in-pit crusher and 27 kt/d (30,000 stpd) of ore are transported by rail. The Bingham Canyon mine has yielded more than 11 Mt (12 million st) of refined copper. In 1863, precious metals - silver-bearing lead - were first discovered in Bingham Canyon. What was once a mountain is now a huge open pit. In fact, the mine is the world's largest man made excavation. The pit is some 4 km (2.5 miles) wide and 0.8 km (0.5 miles) deep. Since the pit began operating in 1906, more than 4.5 Gt (5 billion st) of material have been removed. Modernized facilities Electric 21 m3 (27 cu yd) or 23 m3 (30 cu yd) shovels are used to load the haulage trucks. Both 154 t (170 st) and 181 t (200 st) trucks are used to haul the ore to a mobile, in-pit crusher. The crusher replaces three crushers located at the old concentrators. There are two dumping locations at the new crusher, which can handle two trucks a minute. The 1.5 x 2.7 m (60 x 109 in.), 745 kW (1000 hp) Allis-Chalmers gyratory crusher reduces the ore to 254 mm (10 in.) size or less and delivers it to the conveyor. The crusher and conveyor systems are capable of handling 9 kt/h (10,000 stph) of ore.

Introduction The endeavours to mechanise the shaft sinking operations have led to the development of shaft boring using a V-Mole. The method implies competent ground and a pilot hole of sufficient verticality. This connects the top and the bottom of the shaft and serves for air ventilation and the transport of mullock. The shaft boring machine - nick name V-Mole - with a general pattern similar to a tunnel-borer reames the pilot hole to the designed diameter of the shaft. (Figure 1) The excavating of the rock, the removal of the mullock from the face and the lining of the shaft wall are done simultaneously. If they can be done also continuously this than creates a high potential of productivity. The verticality of the shaft can be garanteed due to the laser beam guided steering system. The diameter of the shaft is variable in steps of 0.5 m between 6.0 and 10 m in accordance with the need. It decides the capacity of the V-Mole to be applied. The depth of the shaft does not depend on the machine. It is practically unlimited as long as a suitable pilot hole is available. Up to 1988 almost 12.656 m of shaft have been drilled on 40 individual projects in Germany and the U.S.A. using a V-Mole. The rocks penetrated were Carboniferous sediments consisting of Sandstones, Shales, Conglomerates and Coal seams. The average uniaxial compressive strength was in the range of 300 - 700 Mpa with a maximum of 1700 Mpa in some singular sandstones.

The objective of this study is to develop a better understanding of the collection characteristics of dust measurement instruments used in mine dust control research with respect to properties of quartz and coal dust. Coal and quartz dust of narrow sues, with aerodynamic median diameters being approximately 2 µm, 4 µm and 10 µm, with quartz contents of l0%, 20%, 30%, 40% and 50%, were released in an aerosol characterization chamber using a fluidized bed aerosol generator. Dust was collected in MSA personal gravimetric samplers with l0-mm nylon cyclones, total dust samplers and Sierra 298 inertial cascade impactors. The samples were analyzed for mass and quartz content. A total of 21 experiments were performed for this study. The mass and quartz collection efficiencies of the total and respirable dust samplers and the impactor were determined. The data show that the amount of dust collected by the respirable dust sampler (respirable + oversize dust trapped in the cyclone pre-classifier) was, in general, less than the amount collected by the total dust sampler. The amount of dust collected by the impactor was higher than that collected by the total dust sampler. Quartz analyses of the airborne dust samples showed that the total dust and respirable dust samplers (including oversize dust) collect less quartz dust than at inertial impactor. The larger the median particle sire of the quartz and coal mixture, the lower the quart content of the dust collected in the samplers. For all three sires, the impactor was a better collector of quartz than the other instruments.

The Barneys Canyon orebody is a sediment-hosted disseminated gold deposit located 8 km (5 miles) north of the Bingham Canyon porphyry copper mine. Mineable oxide reserves are 8.6 million tonnes (9.5 million short tons) grading 1.64 g/tonne (0.048 oz/ton) gold. Host lithologies are carbonates and siliciclastics of the Park City and Kirkman-Diamond Creek Formations of Lower Permian age. Gold distributions are controlled by favorable stratigraphic units and associated alteration, and structures. Dominant alteration is decalcification and bleaching of carbonates, and argillization and bleaching of sandstones. Gold to silver ratios are greater than 1:1. Anomalous trace metals include arsenic, antimony, mercury and thallium. The Melco deposit lies 2.4 km (1.5 miles) southwest of the Barneys Canyon deposit. It is spatially associated with a steeply northwest-dipping siliciclastic breccia in the Kirkman-Diamond Creek Formation at the contact with underlying orthoquartzites of the Freeman Peak Formation. Both gold-bearing oxidized and sulfide lithologies are present, often in sharp contact. Mineable oxide reserves are 2.8 million tonnes (3.1 million short tons) grading 2.40 g/tonne (0.07 oz/ton) gold. Anomolous trace metals include arsenic, antimony, mercury and thallium, which are generally present in concentrations greater than those at Barneys Canyon, particularly in sulfide-bearing material. A spatial, temporal and genetic relationship is proposed between the Melco deposit and late-stage gold mineralization at Bingham Canyon, although both the Melco and Barneys Canyon deposits have many similarities to Carlin-type gold deposits.

INTRODUCTION Under a Federal grant by the Urban Mass Transit Administration (UMTA) (80%), and sponsored by the State of New York (200), Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority is constructing a 10.3 km (6.4 mile) light rail rapid transit system in Buffalo, New York. The $450 million project, which began construction in the Spring of 1979, is unique in rail transit alignment designs in the U.S.A. and the first predominantly underground light rail system in North America. The Buffalo project is unique in that the first phase of the expandable system follows the alignment of Main Street and is on the surface in a proposed 1.6 km (1.0 mile) pedestrian mall in the downtown business district. The alignment then progresses northward into a cut-and-cover portal and standard double-box configuration for 2.74 km (1.7 miles) at a depth of 9.1-10.7 m (30-35 ft) and subsequently drops into bedrock at depths of 18.3-27.4 m (60 to 90 ft). The 5.63 km (3.5 mile) rock tunnel section consists of two single tunnels 4.88 m (16.0 ft) nominal finished diam. and includes five stations. The rock tunnel line section was divided into a north and south contract of 2 316 m (7,600 ft) and 3 243 m (10,640 ft), respectively. Over a considerable period of time great interest has been shown in selective dry concentration of fine ferromagnetic particles, although it is only recently that new permanent magnetic materials have been made available to permit building of such permanent magnetic separators. It is well known that the conventional drum separator does' not efficiently separate fine materials. The centrifugal force on any drum acts in accordance with the particle size and gravity, which may beat varying magnitude-.opposite to the magnetic force, especially when the material is not closely sized. The Magnetic-Mechanical Separator (MMS) is designed for the concentration of fine, unsized magnetic materials where the percentage composition of magnetics to nonmagnetics, or the nature and texture of the materials, is such that its unique agitation and shake-out action with no centrifugal force provides greater efficiency than is obtainable by conventional magnetic separation equipment. This machine consists of a complete double belt conveyor unit with a premagnetizing Axial Pole Agitating Pulley at the feeding end of the lower conveyor belt and a special agitating concentrator magnet above the lower belt of the upper conveyor.

Field testing of GPS mining applications has confirmed the technical and operational viability of GPS for precise, centimeter-level positioning in harsh taconite environments. GPS hardware has provided consistent availability exceeding 90%, with precision in certain applications of ± 0.07 foot at 95% confidence levels. Despite these technical successes though, challenges persist in achieving effective GPS integration. These challenges include the acceptance of new job tasks by mine personnel, the capacity of typical mine data communications infrastructure and the need to design GPS interfaces for new mining equipment.

Coal in most refuse ponds including those owned by Consolidation Coal Company can be recovered by froth flotation techniques. Laboratory studies show that the flotation conditions required for coal recovery varied greatly from pond to pond. The variables found to be most important for high coal recovery and low product ash were: a) the amount and type of flotation reagents and b) the degree of conditioning before flotation. Coal recovery at a rate of 0.504 kg/s (2 tons/hr) was demonstrated at a pond site employing a mobile froth flotation unit.

INTRODUCTION The support of openings in weak sandstones can be achieved by spraying on a liquid grout which will soak in and harden to form a shell. In the St. Peter sandstone of the Minneapolis-St. Paul area of Minnesota compressive strength is increased from about 0.7 MPa (100 psi) to over 7 MPa (1000 psi) to depths of 152 mm (6 in.). A shell of this strength and thickness can pro¬vide support much as shotcrete does but at lower cost. If the spray-grouted shell is inadequate for the support needed, it provides a good base for shotcrete application, which is often difficult in weak or friable sand¬stones because the fresh shotcrete peels off along with a thin layer of sandstone. The spray-grouted technique was initially developed at the Civil and Mineral Engineering Dept. of the University of Minnesota using funds provided by RANN Div. of the National Science Foundation. It was used as temporary support in a 3-m (10-ft) wide, 3700-m (12,000-ft) long storm water drain tunnel by the Minneapolis Sewer Construction Dept. Much of the field development at this construction project was carried out with the cooperation of the personnel of the city of Minneapolis. It also was used for temporary support in a 3.3-m (11-ft) wide, 1800-m (6000-ft) long storm water tunnel built in 1978-1980 for the Minnesota Dept. of Transportation in Minneapolis. In 1975, 2000 m (6500 ft) of 1.5-m (5-ft) wide utility tunnels were spray-grouted for final lining. A 50-m (150-ft) long, 1.2-m (4-ft) wide test tunnel built at the university in 1974 was sprayed for half its length and is being observed for long-term behavior which to date (1981) is good. GROUT MATERIALS The requirements for the liquid grout are more severe than those for injection grouting. Besides being able to penetrate the rock and develop sufficient strength, it must have the following properties: (1) be nontoxic, noncombustible, and have a low odor for spraying under¬ground; (2) have controllable viscosity and setting time for adjusting to the permeability of the sandstone and the required depth of penetration; and (3) must "wet" the sandstone and develop capillary "draw" to penetrate to the required depth. A sodium silicate-based grout with the proper setting agent meets these requirements in the local St. Peter sandstone which has a uniform grain size dis¬tribution curve with D,,, = 0.1 mm, permeability of about 10 to 20 darcys, a porosity of about 25%, and less than 5% of silt size or smaller. It is 97 to 99% pure SiO2. The grout mix consists of Philadelphia Quartz Co. Type N sodium silicate and Celtite 55 Terraset Spray Grade (SG) distributed by Celtite Inc., Cleveland, OH. A volume mix ratio of 100:9:125 for sodium silicate to setting agent to water produces a grout with two to four centipoise viscosity, and initial set at 20°C of 20 min. Setting time is temperature dependent, being longer at lower temperatures, but can be adjusted by varying the setting agent concentration a few percentage points. APPLICATION The application is simple. Spray the grout on the surface until the desired penetration is achieved. Penetration rates of about 5 mm (0.2 in.) per min. are realized in the St. Peter sandstone for up to 152 mm (6 in.) of penetration (30 min. of spraying). The set time must be longer than the spraying time. The spray nozzle should be moved back and forth at a rate that minimizes runoff due to surface buildup. Both a single large hand-propelled nozzle and multiple small machine propelled nozzles have been used successfully. The pumping and mixing equipment used consisted of: (1) a hand-held, hand-pumped, 11-L (3-gal) gar¬den sprayer for test patches (mix by shaking); (2) 76-L (20 gal) batch mixing in barrels with small electric pumps for spraying and mixing; (3) two component pumps consisting of Hypro Model 5300 piston pumps (Hypro Pump Co., St. Paul, MN) on a common shaft driven by an electric motor. The sodium silicate is premixed with a portion of the water and the setting agent is mixed with the rest of the water. The two components are combined and mixed just before the nozzle; and (4) a proportioner metering the setting agent just before the nozzle with the water and sodium silicate premixed and pumped from the surface. The proportioner permits the bulk of the grout to be pumped through a single pipe or hose with only the setting agent stored underground. This is efficient and low in cost. COST The grout mix costs about $0.20/L ($0.75 per gal) in 1978 dollars. Filling all the voids 100 mm (4 in.) deep (25% initial porosity) would have a materials cost of about $5.40/m2 ($0.50 per sq ft). The labor cost of application is usually less than the material cost for normal tunnel jobs. A pump and proportioner cost less than $1000. In a previous paper presented at the 1966 Annual Meeting of AIME we reported our work, conducted at the Pennsylvania State University, on the hydrocyclone washing of fine coal.' The initial evaluation based on that work demonstrated the feasibility of hydrocyclones as fine-coal cleaning devices, and in that previous paper we presented selected test data that showed in principle how product yield and assay respond to variations of the major cyclone operating variables. The present paper reports in greater detail on the findings and presents a comprehensive evaluation of our data as follows: ? Hydrocyclone throughput rates were related to feed pressure and other variables by regression equations. These equations are compared with other capacity- versus-pressure drop expressions taken from the literature on classification cyclones.

In 1997, Central Contra Costa Sanitary District undertook the design of the Martinez East Side Trunk Sewer Improvements Project. Microtunneling was specified for approximately 1,035 meters (3,400 feet) of 600-mm (24-inch)diameter pipeline to be installed through estuarine soil deposits (San Francisco Bay Mud) and alluvium beneath the congested city streets of downtown Martinez, California. Directional drilling was specified for approximately 275 meters (900feet) of 200-mm (8-inch) diameter pipeline in four separate segments to be drilled through bedrock within narrow utility easements between residential properties. This paper presents a case history for the design and construction of themicrotunneling and directional drilling aspects of the project.

A review of recent phosphate beneficiation developments shows that Flotaire cells, ranging from 0.20 m to 2.44 m in diameter, have been examined in pilot scale and commercial plants. Applications of the column cells have included sized feed fractions using anionic and cationic reagent systems. In plants where the Flotaire was installed as a test unit or as an optional circuit, its use has been largely discontinued. On the other hand, when management committed to installing the Flotaire as an integral part of the flowsheet, the performance expectations were met or exceeded.

This presentation will describe the underground excavation at the Bad Creek Pump Storage project. It consists of approximately 3,650 m of various size tunnels ranging from 4.2 m to 9.0 m finished diameter, a powerhouse cavern 45 m high by 135 m long by 22.5 m wide, and 422 m of 9 m diameter shaft. A total of 350,000 m of rock will be excavated, hauled, and placed in a submerged wier. Temporary rock support consisting of shotcrete and/or rockbolts is installed as required.

EPA announced, when they proposed to set a potable-water limit on cyanide, in August, 1990, that they had never encountered cyanide in a :sample of potable water, but they felt this was a sufficiently toxic and common material that it should be covered with a specification. The writer worked with both the American Mining Congress and the Aluminum Association in responding to their proposed spec. of 0.2 ppm max. of "cyanide" in· potable water. Although there are many subcategories of "cyanide", they failed to specify which type they meant.

The Golden Sunlight Underground Mine located near Whitehall, Montana was portalled from the bottom of the existing Golden Sunlight Pit in July 2002. Gold was mined by sublevel stoping in the larger ore zones and longhole back stoping in the narrower ore zones. The stopes varied from 30 feet to 100 feet in width, extended up to 200 feet in height, and were completely unsupported. Underground production averaged 1,500 tons per day with a staff of35 people. The mine operated with a break-even cut-off grade of0.080 ounces per ton.

As mining fronts converge in sill pillar extraction, the mine seismic hazard can be significantly altered and large seismic events have been known to occur. This study used common seismological tools to analyze the extraction of highly stressed sills from two deep Canadian mines with the objective of characterizing the rock mass failure process and relation to large seismic events. The approach treated a sill pillar as a mine-scale failure process, meaning the temporal and spatial analysis scales needed to exist on a similar scale to a significant part of the mine. The temporal analysis scale overlapped with the entire mining sequence, included several years of data to establish long term change in the characteristics of rock mass failure. The spatial analysis scale included the rock mass surrounding a large part of the convergent mining sequence. To accommodate the large spatial and temporal scales, the highest magnitude 2% of events in the dataset were analyzed. Similar results were shown for sill pillars in both mines. Changes in event location, time, magnitude, energy index and apparent volume were similar to expected behavior of rock failure. Indications of strain hardening and strain softening were observed in the sills. The hardening period was characterized by a high rate of small events, high energy index and low apparent volume, giving an indication of high stress and low rock yield. The softening phase was characterized by a decrease in the rate of small events concurrent with an increase in the rate of large events, low energy index and high apparent volume, indicative of release of stress and increase in deformation. Large magnitude seismicity was strongly related to the softening phase, with several Nuttli magnitude 3.0+ events occurring shortly after the transition from hardening to softening failure regimes. Sill failure was indicated by consistently low EI and low levels of seismicity and seismic hazard in the sill pillar.

INTRODUCTION The mining of gold commenced on the Witwatersrand in 1884, and reached a mature state by about 1910, when nearly 20 million metric tons were mined. Mining has continued on the central Witwatersrand, the area of the first mining, at a similar rate until recent years. As a result, well over 1 billion tons of gold mining wastes have been dumped along a line over 80 km long, centred on Johannesburg and stretching from Randfontein in the west to Nigel in the east. (see Figure 1). The population of this conurbation, which straddles the line of mining, has grown to about 5 million. In 1922 uranium was first discovered as a constituent of the ore (and thus of the wastes). Investigations in the 1940's revealed that values near Johannesburg were low, but that, at the western and eastern ends of the central Witwatersrand line, and in the new areas centred on the towns of Carletonville, Klerksdorp and Welkom up to 200 km from Johannesburg, values were adequate to permit uranium recovery. Commercial production commenced in 1952, and by 1979 over 100 000 tons of uranium oxide had been produced. There thus arises on the central Witwatersrand nearly 1,3 billion tons of slimes containing an average of about 0,005% uranium and about 1,8% FeS2. The material grading is about 70%-75µm, and the primary mineral is silica (over 85%). The material is contained in dams constructed hydraulically. A typical dam has an area of about 100 hectares and there are over 6000 ha under slimes dams in the area of concern. The treatment of these dams for uranium recovery commenced in 1977. The situation has thus arisen whereby potential uranium ores have unwittingly been dumped in significant quantities within a major metropolis over a period of nearly a century. The purpose of this note is to review the experience arising from the potential hazard over a considerable time.

In planning for the future, Nkana Division deepened the Mindola sub-vertical shaft which was commissioned in 1994 in order to access the 30 Mt of ore between 1274 and 1570 m levels. The Nkana Synclinorium which is estimated to contain 250 Mt of ore is being accessed from the vicinity of Central Shaft. These areas are being planned with the intention of maximizing the use of computers in geological modelling and mine design so as to overcome the inadequacies of manual planning techniques. As a result, there is an increased demand for quality output from the computerized mine planning system the division has been developing over the last few years. A new workstation comprising the Hewlett Packard HP 71 51100 MHz and a CRX graphics monitor was acquired in 1995 together with the LYNX (version 3.09 and version 4.0) Mine Modelling System. Currently the workstation is being used for geological modelling and mine design for the Zerofold at Central Shaft and the Mindola mining at depth project. AutoCAD and Mine Works Planner have been added to the sys- tem configuration. Mine Works Planner is likely to replace Lo- tus123 for mine scheduling tasks. Computer applications in the area of mine planning at Nkana has led to considerable time savings and improved efficiency in areas formerly performed manually and has allowed speedy processing of data that would otherwise have proved too time consuming. Nevertheless, a lot of work still needs to be done in the areas of geostatistics, stope design and financial modelling of mining options. For the foreseeable future computer based planning will operate parallel to manual methods until such a time as sufficient personnel are proficient in the use of computer systems. This paper describes the program of computerization at Nkana Division, reviews current applications and the benefits and experience gained and discusses the promise of current and future developments.

Slimes, especially clays, are detrimental to several processes in the Mining Industry. The efficiency of classification, clarification, gravity separation, and flotation decreases significantly in the presence of slimes and clays. This problem is particularly critical in the Phosphate and Sulfide Industries. To reduce the effect of slimes in mineral processing, several desliming techniques and chemical additives are used, such as sodium silicate, sodium carbonate, sulfuric acid, tripolyphosphate, hexameta phosphate, etc. Lately, the Mining Chemical industry has shift to more “Specifically Developed” reagents that offer the most efficient and cost effective performance, mainly using organic polymers. For this purpose, the Mining Chemical Industry needs to understand the crystal chemistry of minerals, the chemistry of the aqueous media, the interactions in solids-aqueous-gas interfaces, the rheology of the system, and the plant operation conditions and parameters. This paper describes the use of surface chemistry fundamentals on the design of an organic polymer capable of modifying the rheology of clayish slurries of a phosphate ore. The change in the rheological characteristics of the clayish phosphate slurries allow fine ore particles to settle faster by reducing the slurry viscosity. Thus, abetter separation of the ore from the slimes is possible using gravitational or centrifugal forces. As examples of the application of this reagent, industrial and pilot plant tests on desliming using tanks and hydrocyclones are presented. These tests showed the reduction of 32%-36% in ore losses for different phosphate ores during desliming operations, and the increase of cyclones desliming efficiency to 80%. Tests were also carried out to improve the rejection of unwanted iron bearing slimes in phosphate feed. These tests demonstrated that it is possible to reduce by 0.25%-1.23% Fe2O3content in the flotation feed product. As a result, significant economical benefits are observed with the use of this new technology without any adverse effect on down stream operations, such as clay settling or phosphate flotation.
