The industrial practice of froth flotation for upgrading the quality of fine coal is a relatively complex, expensive, and inefficient process when compared to the coarse- and intermediate-size coal cleaning circuits. The differences in cost and process efficiency can be attributed mainly to the lower equipment throughput, the added cost of flotation reagents, and the fact that flotation is typically a manually operated process susceptible to fluctuating feed characteristics that influence the overall operating efficiency. The emphasis in recent years has been on improving the flotation process efficiency and lowering the cost per clean ton. This has been achieved by larger flotation cell designs, implementation of flotation reagent evaluation programs, and improved process instrumentation and control. These developments are reviewed along with other current coal flotation practices.

The number of spontaneous combustion incidents in the U.S. is expected to increase as the consumption of lower rank coals and the use of longwall mining becomes more prevalent. A spontaneous combustion incident holds the potential for substantial loss of life from a mine fire or explosion if not prevented or controlled at an early stage. Laboratory tests have been developed which are useful in ranking the susceptibility of various coals to spontaneous combustion. Ventilation circuits and mining methods can be designed to minimize the risk of spontaneous combustion. Early detection of spontaneous combustion is possible with the combined use of continuous monitoring, periodic gas sampling, and inspection.

The Porgera gold district, like many other large gold deposits, has a long history of awareness, but only in the last five years has a geologic understanding of the district permitted the discovery of economically attractive gold reserves. The following sequence of events highlights the various significant steps in the evolution of the discovery process. The history of the district goes back about 50 years, and for several decades it was known only for its placer gold. Gradually, as gold became a more interesting metal, more and more attention was centered on the district. The sequence of events does not overstate the problems caused by isolation and climate, but the reader can imagine the difficulties inherent in such an area.

The appropriate software and hardware necessary to adapt an X-ray CT analyzer for the determination of coal washability was developed and successfully tested for well-characterized samples under laboratory conditions. Evaluation of the CT-based analyzer under simulated on-line conditions is also presented to verify the on-line capabilities of the newly developed X-ray CT analyzer for the control of coarse coal cleaning circuits. The investigation shows that the data obtained from CT washability analyses compare favorably with experimental sink float data. Further, image frequency was considered to evaluate the CT-Based coal washability analyzer for simulated on-line conditions. Specifically, the number of observations (image spacing) needed for accurate sampling and the total time required to perform the calculations for a representative data set were determined. Cationic flotation of quartz is currently utilized in the concentration of iron ores and the cleaning of phosphate concentrates. The present work deals with depression of quartz in the presence of aluminum aqueous species during cationic flotation. It was established that aluminum species depress the flotation of quartz with an amine, especially under neutral and slightly alkaline conditions. With an amine as the collector, studies of the adsorption (abstraction) of Al species on quartz surfaces, as a function of pH, correlated well with the depression of this mineral. The presence of Al species also enhanced the depressant action of corn starch on quartz. In addition, the sodium salt of ethylenediaminotetraacetic (EDTA) was found to be an effective complexing agent to suppress the depression caused by aluminum ions.

Sand bed filters are used to remove large and small particles from liquid streams. The large particles are removed by the straining action of the filter bed and the small particles are removed by particle deposition on the surface of the bed particles. Particle deposition, while being essential for the filtering action of colloidal particles, is not the only process that occurs in the filter bed. Other processes that occur are (1) the substrate becomes filled with particles limiting further deposition, and (2) some deposited particles are resuspended. The sum total of all these processes determine the performance of a filter bed.

Market data commonly perceived as being useful to industry for decision making include prices, production and trade quantities, production and transportation costs, stocks, customer's needs, and competitor's qualifications. Costs and factors affecting costs are particularly important in determining competitive positions and possible future prices. These costs include relative cost of production as well as cost experienced by the buyer in making the final product. Care must be taken to calculate costs in a consistent manner to achieve meaningful analyses.

The vast majority of valuations produced for mineral properties using the net present value method provide an estimate of investment value or use value. Such an estimate can be a long way from the price that the property would actually sell for if placed on the market. Indicators from the market need to be used to validate or modify the net present value calculation if market value is being appraised. The comparable sales and replacement cost methods used in the appraisal of urban buildings generally fail when used in the appraisal of mineral properties. Other methods of sales analysis are introduced. Guidelines for what a minerals appraisal report should contain are presented.

In tunneling through water-bearing formations, the expense of controlling the water can have a major impact on overall project cost. The author has seen the cost of an eight-foot, finished sewer tunnel rise from under $500 per foot to over $1,000 when a water problem, anticipated as modest, became severe. There is need for greater professionalism in the approach to groundwater control. The days of the forked stick should be behind us. The basic technology exists. Its application is not yet widespread. This paper discusses predrainage; that is, the lowering of water in advance of tunnel excavation. Both free air and compressed air tunnels are considered. Examples from recent tunnel projects are described. SPECIAL NATURE OF TUNNEL DEWATERING Tunneling is unlike other excavations below the water table in a number of significant ways. The tunnel excavation is always on the critical path; if production slows or stops, there is no other work for the heading crews, no other work to carry the cost of service crews and job overhead. The dewatering commitment must be made well in advance. Construction of wells, and pumping down take time. After the heading reaches a trouble area, time is not available

TRANSPORTATION TUNNELING The use of tunnels for transportation, namely rapid rail transit systems and highways is on the increase. How much that increase might be through the 1980's is the question that is discussed in this paper. In 1975, there were 218 route miles of subway tunnels for rapid rail transit and 154 lane-miles of highway tunnel. From the viewpoint of many transportation planners and designers, the tunnel is one of the tools which may be used to by-pass many types of obstacles: a mountain, a body of water, or a Central Business District (CBD). Therefore, the transportation tunnel is a rural as well as an urban solution with major emphasis on the latter because of the current transportation needs of our cities. In the case of rural locations, tunnels are usually constructed through mountains in order to eliminate miles of steep grades and dangerous curves, such as the Eisenhower Tunnel which cuts through the Continental Divide in Colorado along 1-70 and saves 10 miles and 40 minutes of driving time. Tunnels also provide an excellent transportation link across bodies of water in order not to interfere with shipping lanes. The Chesapeake Bay Tunnel and Bay Tubes of the BART system are excellent examples of this type of tunnel.

Because of its many advantages, roof bolting has been widely used in hard-rock underground mines. In this paper, the applicability of roof bolts to mine openings in frozen ground, and the affects of bolts on the stability of the openings are presented. A comprehensive finite-element program, ABAQUS, was used to analyze the temperature distribution, the stress field and the displacement, field around a mine opening. Openings that were supported by roof bolts and openings that were unsupported were both analyzed. The thermal and mechanical processes were treated as a quasi-coupled problem, with the thermal analyses being conducted first, followed by the mechanical analyses in each case. For the opening under consideration, i.e., a roof area of 15 m2, five to seven roof bolts are appropriate. When the number of bolts is less than five, the displacement within the ground can be improved only locally.

INTRODUCTION Phase I of the Los Angeles Metro Rail Project, known as MOS-1 (Minimum Operable Segment-1), is the first phase of the 27 km± (17 mi) subway starter line. MOS-1 is currently under construction and involves approximately 6.4 km (4.4 mi) of subway, five stations, yards and shops routed through the downtown area of Los Angeles. The project will form the initial heavy rail backbone of a more extensive light and heavy rail transit system planned for the greater Los Angeles area in the future. Construction Contract A-171 is one of 4 tunnel contracts within MOS-1 and involves construction of twin tunnels running from the downtown metropolitan area west to MacArthur Park. The heavily populated and developed downtown area, potentially gassy ground conditions, and the possibility of undocumented abandoned oil wells in seismically active southern California made the design and construction of Contract A-171 a uniquely interesting project. This paper summarizes the construction history to date (December, 1988) including design geotechnical considerations, tunnel support design, as-built geologic conditions, shield tunneling performance through soft ground, and ground response. The success of any industrial mineral project requires an accurate forecast of the demand fir the material as well as accurate projections of costs and prices. This paper develops a general method of predicting mineral requirements and applies it to the case of graphite. The basic method is to explain graphite consumption in each of its major uses by the output and manufacturing technology of the using industry. Once these underlying factors are determined, they can he projected to establish future requirements. This forecast is critical to the evaluation of a new source of supply, such as the graphite resources of Upper Michigan.

The development of liquid-level control algorithms, based on sets of linguistic rules expressing human operator's "intuitive" control strategies, have been reported. The main objective of the present paper is to illustrate the implementation methodology. The experimental work was done with a 28.3Lflotation cell. The control variable (height of pulp in the cell) was controlled by manipulating the outflow rate. The controller algorithms were programmed and implemented using an Applelle computer and a Keithley das Series 500 measurement and control interface. It is pointed out that the scheme of fuzzy controllers is simple to use and powerful enough to handle complex and nonlinear systems.

Innovation can be organized, practiced and managed. The perception of change as an opportunity rather than a threat is mandatory, as is the systematic measurement of innovative performance. Innovation is enhanced by specifically designed policies regarding organizational structure and staffing, daily management practices and compensation and incentives.

This paper addresses the effects of using jet fans as booster fans in mine ventilation networks. A method was developed to determine the pressure generated by jet fans using the momentum theory. The influence of a reduction cone and other ventilation parameters on the jet fan pressure was analyzed. Verification experiments conducted in the Waldo Mine are described. Examples are given to demonstrate the conditions for the effective use of jet fans.

Interest and research in biorecovery of metals has focused mainly on cell-based metal leaching and precipitation. However, production of non-enzymatic metabolic products by microorganisms related to metals bioprocessing also deserves attention. For example, it is well known that biogenic inorganic (e. g. H2S04 ) and organic acids play a role in metal dissolution. There are other metabolic products of microorganisms which can catalyze useful metals transformations. These include methylated metabolites such as alkyl halides which can dissolve metals from ores and also reduce certain metal ions in solution to pure metallic particles. This paper describes some of our research on metal dissolution and precipitation by such metabolites. Examples include the production of high purity elemental metal particles of gold, platinum and palladium by volatile metabolic products.

During sulphide ore grinding, electrochemical interactions between grinding medium and the minerals play a significant role in bringing out enhanced ball wear on the one hand and alter the surface property of the ground minerals on the other. The role of the flotation reagents added simultaneously during grinding with respect to ball wear as well as flotation is yet to be established. Electrochemical measurements such as rest potential, combination potential and galvanic current between sulphide mineral and ball material couples have been carried out in the presence and absence of flotation reagents to understand the nature of electrochemical interactions between ball material and sulphide mineral. Electrochemical mechanisms and models have been proposed to explain the role played by the flotation reagents during different binary, ternary and quaternary interactions with respect to ball wear during grinding.

Large-scale equipment can reduce both capital and operating costs for concentrators. Large semiautogemus (SAG) mills can be effectively utilized in big mills but they must be kept fully loaded to tab advantage of their great potential. With varying hardness ores, controlling throughput is difficult and careful design must take this into consideration. A variable speed drive on large primary semiautogemus mills can overcome this problem to a considerable degree. This paper provides a base case using standard accepted technology of two wound rotor single speed 4476 kW (6000 hp) motors to drive the primary SAG mills of a hypothetical 36,364 t/d (40,000 stpd) typical porphyry copper mill. One other fixed speed drive will be described and jive variable speed drive configurations will be reviewed. Capital costs for the entire grinding circuit, from crusher product to flotation feed, were developed for the base case and each of the alternatives. A technical evaluation comparing the advantages and disadvantages of each drive is presented.
