With commodity prices rising again and market conditions stabilizing, the Metals Economics Group (MEG) found that most mining companies increased their exploration budgets in 2010. In the groups 21st edition of the Corporate Exploration Strategies (CES), MEG found a 44-percent rise in the estimated worldwide exploration total for 2010. MEG found that the estimated total 2010 budget for nonferrous metals exploration reached $12.1 billion, reinstating almost two-thirds of the industry?s $6 billion in cuts to exploration in 2009. Nonferrous exploration refers to expenditures related to precious and base metals, diamonds, uranium and some industrial minerals; it excludes iron ore, aluminum, coal, and oil and gas. In 2008, exploration budgets were at an all-time high of $14.4 billion. This capped a six-year run in which budgets rose. In 2009, nonferrous exploration budgets dropped 42 percent in 2009 as the global economic crisis and declining prices for almost all commodities took their toll on the industry. Metals prices - the primary driver of exploration spending - have improved markedly since bottoming in early 2009, and have traded well above their long-term trends throughout 2010. In response, major, intermediate and junior companies have all increased their aggregate exploration allocations in 2010. In particular, the significant improvement in the availability of equity financings for the juniors over the past 12 to 18 months has allowed this group to account for the largest share of the overall increase in exploration spending this year.

This article describes and analyzes the history of research into the origins of the uranium-vanadium(-radium) deposits of the Paradox Basin. For several decades after their discovery in 1881, research was desultory and almost entirely descriptive, fluctuating with demand for vanadium and radium. Systematic geologic descriptions, accumulated between 1910 and 1950, supported rapid progress during a government-backed surge of research in the 1950s, when uranium was the chief commodity of interest. Most of the major theoretical innovations date from this decade, including the use of concepts from solution chemistry to identify the conditions and constrain the processes of deposit formation and alteration. Research from this time was highly influential in geology at large, providing the model for sandstone-hosted uranium deposits worldwide and numerous new minerals and mineral structures. After about 1960, mine production remained high but research dwindled, and most new advances were to the details of the hydrothermal model of ore formation rather than its core concepts. By the end of the 1960s, the deposits were understood to have formed at the mixing interface of an oxidized, metal-bearing water with a reducing fluid of debated origin. Research was desultory over the ensuing decades; the source of the metals and the nature of the chemicals constituting the trap were not clearly established. They remain questions today, as do factors like the relationship between ore mineralization and the geologic history of the basin. (More in the full paper.)

In order to filter small amounts of fine slimy solids the reversible cake-filtration process was developed. The filterable solids contents lion in feeds can range from less than 1 ppm up to about 5%. The relative advantages of this process, are usually the greatest in the range of 0.05% to 1.0% filterable solids. Filterable solids that average in particle size about 20 microns& are non-compressible are very easy for this filtration process. Some feeds have been all sub-micron in particle size. A 1/8 inch thick cake is considered to be very thick. The usual cake is between 13/2 and 1/16 inch thick. A new line of injection molded plastic filter plates were developed for use with the reversible cake filtration process. The first commercial sized installation of this system was made 3 years ago in the Wakefield Y.M.C.A. swimming pool. Over 70 filters ranging in size from one plate to 63 plates have been produced. In addition to the process advantages there are the low cost and corrosion resistance advantages of the plastic plates.

Derjaguin and Dukhin [1] were the first to develop a first-principle flotation model by considering the role of surface forces in bubble-particle interactions. According to the model, the ζ-potentials of particles constitute the energy barriers, E12, for particle (1)-bubble (2) interactions, which corroborates well with the observation that flotation recoveries reach maxima under conditions of zero-zeta potentials. In the present work, a series of surface force measurements were conducted for the quartz-dodecylamine hydrochloride (DAH) flotation system, for which detailed studies had been conducted by D.W. Fuerstenau [2], including the measurements of zeta-potentials, contact angles and collector adsorption as a function of pH.

California's Surface Mining and Reclamation Act (SMARA) was passed in 1975 to identify and protect mineral resources in areas of high land-use conflict and ensure reclamation of mined lands. Under SMARA, aggregate resource availability is quantified and compared to forecasted demand in specific market regions. Fifteen regions studied thus far cover 20,000 square miles and contain 50 billion tons of high-quality aggregate resources which have been legally designated as ?regionally significant?, providing a measure of protection previously unavailable. SMARA reports and State testimony at local hearings have supplied objective information and helped reduce conflict in mine-permitting decisions.

This prevents localized wear on the throatbush, improves hydraulic efficiency and lowers the total ownership cost for the operator. To avoid impacting the plant’s production, these adjustments are often performed while the pump is operating. However, this can have safety implications for individuals working at the front of the pump unit.“Manually adjusting an alloy throatbush on a large pump requires several people and is laborintensive. We wanted to find a safer and quicker way to extend the wear life of the pump with regular adjustments, which led us to development of this technology,” said Marcus Lane, global product manager for centrifugal pumps for Weir Minerals.“Our automated throatbush adjustment solutions are available for pumps fitted with either rubber or alloy throatbushes on Warman slurry pumps used in the most arduous applications, and have been designed with our customers’ safety and pump operation in mind. By mechanizing the adjustment procedure, personnel are removed from the line of fire, and the accuracy of axial movement is increased,” said Ron Bourgeois, director of slurry pumping technology group for Weir Minerals."

"The effectiveness of reagent adsorption onto hematite ore particle surfaces is critical during beneficiation to promote effective selective flocculation and dispersion and increase iron oxide recovery. The relationship between aqueous calcium in the process water and the effectiveness of common iron ore dispersants has never before been studied. The nature of common dispersants was studied in the presence and absence of calcium in the process water. The settling behavior of hematite-rich iron ore at pH 11 was assessed in the presence of calcium and inorganic dispersants: sodium silicate, sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP), sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP) and organic dispersant ethylenediamenetetraacetic acid (EDTA). It was found that inorganic dispersants are ineffective at a pH of 11 without activating the surface sites of the ore particles with calcium. Organic dispersants, however, were found to be effective with and without surface site activation.IntroductionThe United States produced 54 million metric tons of concentrated iron ore in 2011 (Jorgenson, 2013). Over 8 Mt were produced using a process known as selective flocculation and dispersion (CCI, 2011). The grade of this ore is slowly depleting, making it imperative that processing efficiency improves. To increase processing efficiency, a complete understanding of the effects of chemical reagents in the process must be acquired. This process relies heavily on dispersants to disperse iron oxides from gangue minerals in settling processes. The mechanism that these dispersants use to disperse the ore and its relationship to calcium in the process water has never been studied. The following extended abstract summarizes the relationship between aqueous calcium in process water and the effectiveness of common iron ore dispersants at dispersing hydrated hematite ore. These tests were carried out at a pH of 11, as this is a typical pH used to ensure dispersion in selective flocculation and dispersion processes."

The underground coal mining systems have kept pace with the developments that have occurred in other types of mining industry. A diversified group of machines with high horsepower motors, built-in microprocessor technology and with numerous options to satisfy the miners need in a varying geological environment are now available. A brief review of this existing technology and its likely status within the next 21 years is presented. Discussed also are some of the on-going advanced developments in electronic mechanization, remote control and automation together with mine wide data monitoring and management systems and facilities to process and transmit data to remote computerized stations.

The Seismic Interactive Interpretation Workstation (IIW) integrates various sets of geophysical and geological data to form a network of information which is stored in a database. Computer models are generated from known drillhole information and later correlated with the processed seismic data. Seismic color processing adds another dimension to the interpretation process. Complex trace attributes provide better definition of subtle features not easily observed from black and white sections. Utilizing the computer workstation, the explorationist gains valuable insight and conducts more intelligent interpretation of seismic data through a more comprehensive network of data analysis.

The nature of water and clay in carbonate rocks is currently being investigated at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute by various thermal and sorption techniques. Two basic concepts 'led to the present research. (1) To explain the expansion and contraction on wetting and drying of some unsound argillaceous carbonate rocks, it was postulated that the pore space around each clay particle is such that when water is sorbed by the clay, force is exerted against the pore walls. (2) The clays in expansive rocks are rejected from the growing dolomite crystals during their growth, and form a more or less connected network, thereby becoming "wettable," or available to water. New quantitative cold differential-thermal-analysis (electrocalorimetric) equipment was designed and constructed to check the "limited space" and "wettable clay" concepts and to determine the thermal nature of the transition of water to ice in rocks. This DTA equipment can detect the release of heat in freezing of less than 0.001 per cent water in a rock. Twenty-three rock cores (nine sound and fourteen unsound) and 4 procelain cylinders for standards were studied. In the nine sound rocks and in all the procelain cylinders, the rapid freezing of from 50 to 100 per cent of the water was readily detectable after 7 to 10° C of supercooling. No further freezing could be detected to -20° C. However, in eleven of the fourteen unsound rocks, no freezing was detected to as low as -40° C; in the other three, less than 50 per cent of the water froze. As a check of the DTA measurements, adsorption isotherms were determined for all materials. Calculations of theoretical freezing points for sorbed water again demonstrated that the least sound rocks had the most nonfreezable water. "Frost" sensitivity in these carbonate rocks is, therefore, probably not the result of the force of expansion of water to ice. The disruptive force is believed to result from expansion of sorbed, ordered water on clay surfaces. The relationship between the unfilled rock pores after 24-hour water saturation and the water sorbed at 85 per cent humidity at 30° C (i.e., the theoretical nonfreezable water delineates the sound and unsound carbonate rocks.

Improvement of grade and recovery requires the use of optimum processing circuits. Critical to an optimum circuit is the set point for separation. With the introduction of the concept of circuit analysis (Meloy, 1982), it became possible to determine optimum circuits for a given task. No analysis, however, has yet been made as to the grade requirements of the larger circuits. Williams and Meloy (1982), reviewed the literature and concluded that, within the operating range, most unit operations involved in particle separation behave linearly. For the purposes of this analysis, linearity will be assumed. Grade, G, is defined as the weight of the coal mineral, C, that appears in the product, divided by the weight of the coal mineral plus the weight of the gangue mineral or waste mineral, Q, which appear in the product.

The Carson Hill mine in Calaveras County, California, was explored and developed by Grandview Resources Inc., as an open-pit heap-leached operation, with production commencing in the fall of 1986. Grandview entered the district in 1983 after a 40-year period of quiescense, the initial contact being by Barden Stevenot, V.F. Hollister, and J.J. Crowhurst. The last dividend declared by the Carson Hill Gold Mining Corp. was 3 1/2$ per share paid in January 1943. The mine was originally discovered in August 1848 by Jim Carson. Preceding the entry by Grandview in 1983, Cyprus Mines explored Carson Hill in 1975, and drill exposed a mineral inventory of 7.3 Mt (7,982,000 tons) averaging 1.4 g/t (0.040 oz per ton) gold. From that time until the Grandview entry, R.W. Thomssen and B.E. Stevenot continued investigations into the potential of the deposit. Grandview successfully investigated many of the metallurgical problems involved with heap leaching the ore. Metallurgical investigations were con- cluded under the direction of R.S. Shoemaker. By November 1984, J.A.C. Ross had prepared a prefeasibility report that included the earliest Grandview investigations. This report concluded that the deposit contained at least 6.8 Mt (7,440,000 tons) of ore that average 1.5 g/t (0.045 oz per ton) gold and that this ore could be mined with a 2: 1 stripping ratio. A final feasibility report was prepared by D.W. Pringle in September 1985. It showed a final ore reserve of 14.7 Mt (16,160,000 tons) of 1.7 g/t (0.049 oz per ton) gold. The Felder ore deposit is a 5,000,000-pound uranium deposit in the South Texas Coastal Plain. It occurs in the basal sand of an Oakville Formation (Miocene) alluvial system. The host sand is a carbonate-rich arkose which contains virtually no carbonaceous debris and has been reduced by the local introduction of hydrogen sulfide. The ore lies well within the reduced zone and occurs as coffinite and uraninite that fill interstices and coat and replace grains. The overall geometric configuration of the ore is that of a winged, crescentic ore roll. Weak mineralization extends the wings of the ore roll and gives greater expression to the roll character. Departures from the shape are controlled by discontinuities in bed- ding and by proximity of the ore to the surface. Associated with the uranium is a broad halo of anomalous molybdenum. Subsidiary mineralized trends suggest a pre-existing up-dip position for the main roll. Oxidation from the surface largely destroyed this previous roll by solubilization of uranium. Uranium subsequently migrated into favorably reduced sand and reprecipitated at the present roll position.

The former mayor of Los Angeles, CA is a believer in public transportation but thinks neither his city nor the entire country is spending enough on basic infrastructure. In fact, the United States has fallen behind most other developed nations in improving public transportation, the former mayor said. Antonio R. Villaraigosa was the keynote speaker at the North American Tunneling (NAT) conference, held June 22-25 in Los Angeles, CA. The event, held every two years, is sponsored by the Underground Construction Association of SME (UCA). This years? conference attracted 1,091 underground construction professionals from around the world. The accompanying exhibition continues to grow, attracting 142 exhibiting companies occupying 162 booths. As always at NAT, registered attendees received the proceedings volume of the conference, which contains 132 papers. The proceedings volume, including a CD of the papers, is available from SME for $149 member, $139 student member and $189 nonmember. Utah Development Company (UDC) operates five large opencut coal mines in the Bowen Basin of Central Queensland, Australia. In total, over 20 million tonnes of coking coal are exported annually from the five mines. Typically, the coal seams dip at 5 percent, are 2 to 10 metres thick, and sub-crop some 20 to 40 metres below surface. In the main, the operations are single seam, but multiseam (2, 3 or 4 seams) operations do exist and will form an increasing proportion of the mining activities as depths increase. Draglines are used as the major stripping equipment, highwall depths currently ranging from 20 to 65 metres. Whilst project feasibilities were based on stripping to a 60 metre highwall, it is now proposed to continue opencut mining to depths exceeding 100 metres. This will entail large quantities of prestripping (ahead of the draglines) and overcoming problems associated with steepening seam dips, including haulage of coal from the pits.

In May, 1966, the General Services Administration (GSA) announced a program to encourage additional domestic production of copper in the interest of national security. Upon learning of the copper production expansion program, Duval Corporation entered into negotiations with GSA for development of the Sierrita copper-molybdenum property under the program. Agreements between the GSA and Duval Sierrita Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Duval Corporation, were concluded in 1967, with the Sierrita Concentrator beginning operation in 1970 at a designed capacity of 72,000 STPD. Subsequent additions and modifications have expanded capacity to 90,000 STPD. This property, located approximately 20 miles south of Tucson, Arizona, represents an investment including working capital of about $200 million. These funds were provided from an $83 million loan from GSA, repayable in copper valued at 38 cents per pound, $48.75 million of bank loans subject to U. S. During the 1980's. the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) proposed new regulations for the use of diesel equipment in underground coal mines, and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recommended that whole diesel exhaust be regarded as "a potential occupational carcinogen", and that reductions in exposure to exhaust pollutants would reduce excess risk. During the same time, the Bureau of Mines tested new emission control technology to minimize diesel emissions. The objectives of this paper are to discuss the major issues regarding diesel exhaust emissions. especially diesel particulate matter (DPM) , and to highlight emission controls that will be available. DPM is a potential health threat because it is respirable in size and is composed of nonvolatile carbon with adsorbed or condensed compounds. These compounds include potentially mutagenic or carcinogenic hydrocarbons such as polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons and sulfates. DPM contributes to the degradation of air quality in mines with typical mean concentrations ranging from 0.2 to 1.0 mg/m3. In addition to adequate ventilation, control of DPM can be achieved by implemention of improved work practices, regularly scheduled engine maintenance, and emission controls.

The purpose of this study was to develop guidelines to enable mine operators to maximize longwall dust reductions, while optimizing the use of ventilating air and shearer water consumption. A recent investigation by Foster-Miller Incorporated, under a Bureau of Mines contract, quantified the effect of increased face airflow and shearer water supply on face dust concentrations. A 70 pct reduction in respirable dust levels was achieved at the shearer operator's position during tail-to-head cutting by an incremental increase in average face air velocity from 83.8 m/min (275 fpm) to 123.4 m/min (405 fpm), while holding shearer water consumption constant. A 60 pct reduction was achieved through an increase in shearer water pressure and flow from 9.1 kg/cm2 (130 psi) at 0.19 m3/min (50 gpm) to 19.7 kg/cm2 (280 psi) at 0.28 m3/min (75 gpm), holding airflow constant. The combined effects of increasing both parameters produced an 85 pct reduction. Optimal usage of ventilating air and shearer water consumption can be achieved by defining a "point of diminishing returns" above which further increases no longer reduce dust concentrations, proportionately .
