Three case studies were undertaken to investigate the role of land use potential evaluation in reclamation planning and to determine the impact of regional differences on final land use plans. The three surface mines studied were representative of operations in the Appalachian, Interior, and Northern Great Plains provinces. The scope of the investigations included a survey of regional characteristics, a detailed investigation of the mining operations and site conditions, and an assessment of local land use planning activities in the area of the mines. Special attention was given to key factors that presently determine the use of reclaimed land. Also, for each case study, the postmining land use potential was evaluated using site planning principles. Specifically, the environmental, economic, and social impacts of several potential postmining land use plans were considered.

In the mid-1970's a major new prospect was proved in a previously unworked region of North East Leicester- shire, United Kingdom. Preliminary estimates from borehole information showed over 500 million tonnes of recoverable reserves. A special Planning Team was set up, to co-ordinate the work for the two local Areas, South Nottinghamshire and South Midlands (management of production of the UK National Coal Board is organised in twelve such Areas). The team was led by one of the authors as Deputy Director, Mining, North East Leicestershire Prospect (NELP). The remit imposed by the National Coal Board was to analyse the possible options of number, location and eventual rates of output of shaft or drift access; to select a recommended alternative in the light of geological, mining, topographical and environmental considerations; and prepare submissions in accordance with standard Board practice on major projects - such submissions including detailed engineering design, financial appraisal, and full risk assessment. To assist the Planning Team, surface and underground consult- ant engineers were appointed to prepare feasibility studies of specific civil and engineering problems.

Industries dependent on pyrometallurgical processing generally find themselves facing a common set of problems, namely, serious environmental restrictions, heavy capital requirements for new facilities and for plant modernization, the certainty of rapidly escalating fuel costs, and the uncertainty of fuel availability. To remain competitive, it has become clear to industry that a new dimension of attention must be given to assuring the maximum performance from plant facilities already in place and from those that are built in the future. In the last decade or so, in response to these needs, there has been an acceleration in the development of new pyrometallurgical process concepts. Their application, though spotty, is increasing. A common factor in this developing base of technology is the need for effective process control. Digital control is an indispensable element of meeting the challenge. We cannot make the point, however, by looking to a general survey of instrumental control of pyrometallurgical processes. Computer control is in its awkward adolescence. Its application is so new that only isolated applications can highlight the trends. For this reason, the authors have chosen to focus on the nonferrous smelting industry to illustrate the status of pyrometallurgical processing and control. We believe this approach will best meet the interests of most readers of this edition and the background of the authors.

The geostatistical method of indicator kriging (IK) was extended to analyze two-dimensional distributions of rock joint orientations. The IK method provides a non-parametric approach for spatial analysis of local probability distribu- tions. By taking into account the spatial correlation of rock joint outcomes and the relative geometry between estimation unit and samples, the IK method provides optimum, spatially conditioned estimates. The estimation method was tested by comparing distributions of actual mapped rock joint orientations with their corresponding kriged estimates. The comparisons show the unbiasedness and accuracy of the non-parametric approach for estimating local probability distributions.

A PC-based simulation model using the software packages SIMAN and CINEMA was developed to simulate and animate truck-shovel operations. The model is capable of simulating one mathematical dispatching strategy using linear and dynamic programming and six heuristic dispatching strategies. Data were collected from an actual operating mine through time studies and analysis of historical records. Statistical analyses were performed, and appropriate theoretical distributions were fitted for various time events in the truck-shovel cycle. The model was then applied to study overall impact of these dispatching strategies on constrained and unconstrained mine productivity. The simulation/animation model developed in this study seems to be an efficient planning tool for choosing optimal fleets and finding an optimal dispatching strategy to produce an equilibrium between the quality and quantity of production.

INTRODUCTION The flotation of minerals from their ores in flotation cells involves understanding many chemical and physical processes ranging from electronic events in the bulk mineral and in the mineral surface regime. molecular events at interfaces, the statics and dynamics of thinning and rupture of microscopic to molecular intefacial films, the fluid mechanics of bubble- particle events, the dynamics of air-water-solid colloid states in a flotation machine, etc. etc. D.W. Fuerstenau, whom we honour in this symposium has made unique contributions to many of these diverse physico-chemical and technological sub-processes. The present paper is concerned with a number of observations of the behaviour of minerals in flotation cells and the surface science of some mineral sulfide-water systems. We do not intend to be comprehensive in our analysis, but rather to highlight the challenges that face the scientific masochist who chooses to understand "froth flotationn. In what follows, emphasis is placed quite deliberately on technologically relevant, dynamic or realistic flotation processes i.e. the recovery in a froth of a given sulfide mineral particle of a given size and history from synthetic or actual ores in a flotation cell. Evaporite units of the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin are known to host native sulfur. In British Columbia, a large number of oil and gas exploration drilling holes reported intersections with native sulfur. The most important ones include 6 meters (20 feet) and 27 meters (90 feet) of native sulfur among 23 occurrences in Devonian Muskeg evaporite or adjacent Slave Point reef facies carbonates. A small Frasch sulfur deposit is known from Devonian Wabamun Group sediments near Camrose in South Central Alberta. Occurrences of native sulfur are common also in association with presently mined gypsum of Devonian Burnais Formation in southeastern British Columbia. Triassic sediments with evaporite members in British Columbia are also known to contain native sulfur showings. A widespread presence of anhydrite in many sedimentary units of Alberta and British Columbia together with oil and gas fields in the same areas and associated native sulfur occurrences point to a possibility for Frasch sulfur deposits in this part of western Canada.

The Muruntau gold deposit is situated in the Kyzyl Kum Desert of Uzbekistan. It is currently being mined in the world's largest open pit gold mine with production believed to be of the order of two million ounces per annum. The open pit measures about 3.5 by 2.5 km and extends to a depth of 350m. The gold ore resource in the Muruntau deposit, including production, is about 170 million ounces of gold (Anonymous, 1996). This paper presents a summary of the deposit geology and its regional geological setting. Information used in this paper has been generated from observations made on two visits to the mine and its environs, and a review of the Russian-and English-language literature.

Precambien in age, the phospate deposit under study which outcrops to the south forms a synclinal consisting of only one mineralized horizon. The synclinal strikes SSW/NNE, dips from 30 to 60 NNE and is about 5 km wide. The deposit has been explored by : - trenches and pits about 50 m apart in the outcropping area ; - core drill holes forming lines perpendicular to the outcrop. These lines are about 100 m apart. On each line, the drill holes are about 50 m apart The phosphate layer is clearly visible and has then been defined from the geologicia1 description of drill hole logs. The layer has been divided into two parts : a very rich, altered part at the hanging wall and a poor part displaying opposite physical characteristics, i.e. a fresh and hard rock. With open pit mining in view, the deposit has been divided into a 3-dimension network of blocks, each block measuring 50 X 50 X 100 m. The tonnages of rich and poor ore, PO25, MgO, Si02, CaO and R2O3 grades and the tonnages of barren waste at the hanging wall and the footwall have been calculated for each block. Given the dip of the phosphate layer ranging from 30 to 60° and its relative thickness (between 10 and 15 m), it was impossible or inappropriate to carry out direct calculation by 3-dimension kriging : too many neighboring blocks to obtain sufficient date and impossibility to draw up the morphology of the layer.

The Late Miocene San Cristobal Ag-Zn-Pb deposit represents syngenetic and epigenetic mineralization with low- and high-sulfidation characteristics. The geology of the deposit is characterized by barren dacitic ring fracture domes, mineralized resurgent rhyodacite domes, strongly altered and mineralized tuffaceous lacustrine sedimentary rocks and an extensive crystal-lithic tuff debris apron. The orebody is hosted by intracauldron sedimentary rocks and breccias. Fluid inclusion data suggest that silver, lead and zinc were transported as chloride complexes and precipitated by cooling in veins from <5% (by weight) NaCl eq. fluids at 170° to 215°C. Silver spatially and perhaps temporally associated with resurgent rhyodacite was transported as a chloride complex and precipitated by increased H2S activity or increased fluid pH.

The expansion of gold production in Nevada&apos;s Carlin Trend over the last few years has been staggering. To increase gold production while minimizing capital requirements and providing for the safe and efficient mining and processing of ores has required a tremendous effort by the mine engineering group at Newmont Gold. Organizational changes were implemented by the company to effectively deal with a full range of engineering problems. Specially developed computer software and its applications will be explained in this article as well as improvements in the techniques used in converting geologic resources into reserves. Scheduling procedures for the mining of multiple pits to feed multiple processing facilities will likewise be presented. Ore control procedures and current mine engineering practices are discussed. Growth at Newmont Gold Expansion of production levels at Newmont Gold Co. was brought about primarily by the economic incentive to exploit increased reserves. All copper ore haulage at Isamine was transferred to the new 19 level haulage network by mid 1975. Previous experience together with design studies had indicated that a three train operation would be required to haul the scheduled ore production. The ore train with a gross weight of 600 tonne is made up of 15 bottom dumping trucks hauled by twin electric locomotives (Figure 1). Present train speeds reach 40 km/hr and, in the future, this speed could be increased to 55 km/hr. The planned operation on the restricted track network and the relatively high train speed meant that the train driver operated block light system would be inadequate on the grounds of haulage safety and meeting production targets. Some form of Centralised Train Control (CTC) system emerged as a necessity, and as an initial step, tenders were called for a relay control type CTC system. The high cost of these systems and the anticipated high maintenance costs and inflexibility of the offered systems led to the rejection of the tenders. It was decided to develop a CTC system locally and to use a digital computer to perform the basic track [ ] equipment interlocking tasks and monitor haulage operation.

Though computer simulation of coal beneficiation has been in use for nearly two decades the models used in the programs for the simulation of the crushing processes concentrate mainly on the size distribution. This paper suggests the use of an empirical equation approximating to the cumulative probability or error function for the simulation of the liberation process in coal crushing. The algorithm outlined here can be incorporated in a computer program already having a size distribution model.

This report is a review of current research being conducted in the United States which is intended to increase the utilization of coal ash. In order that this report be as timely as possible, the majority of information was obtained by direct comunication with the people listed in the references. Due to the magnitude of the flyash research program, some projects may be inadvertently omitted. Field research on flyash for use as an agricultural fertilizer is being monitored at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.1 This research is directed at determining the plant nutrients that are available in flyash as well as the quantities of flyash that can be applied to agricultural soil without adversely affecting plant growth, Coal mine spoil and refuse bank reclamation with power plant flyash is being demonstrated by United States Bureau of Mines, Morgantown, West Virginia.2 Numerous highly visible coal refuse piles and strip mine spoil banks contribute to air, water, and land environmental problems. Revegetation of several experimental sites with flyash from bituminous coal-fired power plants was undertaken in West Virginia and Pennsylvania. Conventional farm equipment was used at some of the sites while large earthmovers were required at others. The flyash served as a neutralizing agent, dilutent, and soil amendment to provide some nutrients which enhanced vegetation of the barren areas, Estimated cost of reclamation by this method is $300.00 per acre of previously leveled area. This figure can vary considerably depending upon the topography of the site, haul distance, quality of the soil and quality of flyash.

Computer oriented simulation techniques can be effective in the design and analysis of complex mining systems. In fact, a number of computer software products are available for mine systems simulation. However, previous models have tended toward being either data-intensive and deterministic, or data-limited and highly stochastic. The need for a fully integrated package with a simplified user interface has never been more apparent. In this paper, the design of a surface mining simulation model documented in Albert (1986) is described. The basic features of the surface mining system and their counterparts in the simulation model are discussed. The methods and algorithms used to implement these subsystems are presented. Considerations of information management and software design are illustrated, especially as they apply to the application of the package by a mining engineer. An example is provided to demonstrate the concepts embodied in the model and to show how a surface mine is simulated from mine parameters.

The commissioning of a distributed digital control system for the grinding circuit at Cuajone was completed by mid-August 1985. Development of a successful strategy, excellent operator acceptability, and the visual aspects offered by the display of the central console improved mill through- put significantly. The inherent features of a digital system enhanced the flexibility in grinding control and allowed the milk and classifiers to be operated at maximum capacity. This paper discusses the strategy development and the production restrictions encountered, and evaluates the overall performance of the digital control system.

In today&apos;s "information age", we have the ability to collect volumes of data about a company&apos;s performance. The challenge is to turn that data into information employees can understand and use to fine-tune equipment, modify work processes, and ultimately manage production. Software programs have increasingly given end users control over what data is used and how it is presented. Kennecott has implemented an information system capable of collecting and storing data at the primary level. This enables plant personnel to transform historical data into information for action. Kennecott plans to expand its data collection and use trending and reporting capabilities to move toward a fully optimized operation.

Based on theoretical and experimental researches of phosphate and carbonate minerals flotation in the presence of soluable glass at various pH values and sodium silicate concentrations, it has been established that the presence of soluble glass in solution leads to formation of silicate compounds on the surface of phosphate and carbonate minerals causing change in their floatability for the worse. The harmful influence of soluable salts is done by tying of collector as metallic soaps, forming precipitates on the surface of minerals to be floated and causing their depression of flotation, and breaching of the froth etc. Depressing action of slimes and products of interaction with collector depends on the ratio of values and signs of potentials of the mineral surfaces. The possibility of phosphate and gangue minerals separation can be evaluated by comparing the minimum-necessary concentrations of collector required for their flotation.

The three-dimensional finite element technique combined with a progressive failure approach were used to simulate stress distributions in a complete mine section that occur in response to a longwall mining operation. Due to the availability of a Cray supercomputer, a large-scale, three-dimensional, finite-element model was developed for the analysis. The Hoek-Brown failure criterion, which describes a realistic behavior of rock masses, was used for the simulation of progressive failure. A comparison of calculated and monitored stresses in the mine has shown that the model gives a good representation of stresses in the mine structure.
