The use of cyanide in the processing of gold has been documented for over a century. It is still one of the more effective methods of isolating gold, as witnessed by the fact that in 1987 cyanidation was used in the processing of 91.5% of the gold produced in the United States.

Introduction The need for water is fundamental to every minerals processing operation. Though this may sound rather elementary, it is one area that cannot be over- looked. Frank C. Quinn in his paper entitled "Water Is Water Is Water" (1967) said, "but it isn't as simple as that. Very often research is slowed down and production is hampered because of a lack of appreciation for the behavior of water." The quantity of water needed for any operation is determined from bench and pilot plant testing. The quality required by the process for both fresh and reuse water is also established during these two testing phases. Quinn's statements are true whether the process involves the paper industry, the minerals industry, or any other industry. It is not the author's intent to cover water quality, quantity, or re- cycle in specific terms, but to provide the reader with a general outline of the topic with reference to several valuable sources of information. The first part of the chapter will cover several of the areas that have been de- tailed by others and also provide a list of reference sources. The references at the end of the chapter are not all inclusive but will provide a good starting point. In the second part of the chapter, a detailed description, with flowsheet illustrations, is pro- vided on the evolution of the reclaim (reuse) water system at the Tilden concentrator. Mineral Industry Water Needs Beresford and Edler (1978) surmnarized the minerals industry's need for water this way: "minerals are necessary to a modern complex technological society. The minerals industry, while its water needs are relatively minor compared to large users such as agriculture, nevertheless requires a large quantity of water to carry out daily operations from mining to final product refining." In 1973 total water use in the United States was estimated at 15.14 billion cubic meters (4 trillion gallons) for the minerals industry. Of this, about 69% was recirculated within the system. In 1982 Watt and Horton stated that the percent of recycled water in the minerals industry had improved to 73%, showing the minerals industry is an efficient user of water and that steady improvement in water recycling is something the minerals industry can look to with pride. The percent of water needed by the United States' minerals industry was estimated in 1962 to be about 2% of the total water required by industry

Thirty years ago, the appearance of a female mining engineer, geologist or miner in a company, union or mine environment would have been unthought of, unwelcomed and violently opposed. Twenty years ago, the intellectual perception of the news that women were interested in becoming mining engineers, geologists and miners had been accepted by the industry-but no one wanted to be the first to hire one of these exotic creatures. Ten years ago, those who had been most vehemently opposed to the philosophical idea of women working in these areas were faced with competent, productive engineers, geologists and miners-who only incidentally happened to be women-and began hiring them. Historically, of course, one can always find the isolated individual who worked in these areas-the first female graduate of the Colorado School of Mines with a mining engineering degree graduated in 1903-but the concept of woman as professional engineer was very slow in arriving in the United States. The few who worked as miners generally worked in small family enterprises, such as some of the coal mines in both Eastern and Western United States. Others accompanied husbands or sons into wilderness areas searching for gold and other precious metals.

Experiments have been conducted on a 76¬mm water-only cyclone treating cowl below 2 mm size having different proportion of -0.075 mm fines. The effect of cone angle of the cyclone (compound cone) has been analyzed on water split, separation of -0.075 mm fines, separation of coarse solids, and on separation behavior of individual size ructions of the feed. It has been noted from the results that there exists a linear relationship between the flow rate of water in the feed and flow rate of water reporting to overflow stream. This relationship is independent of the cone angle and, with changes in the fines content in the feed, only the intercept of the straight varies, keeping the slope constant. Further, it has also been found that the percentage of fines below 0.075 mm reporting to the overflow is directly proportional to the percentage of feed wafer reporting to the overflow. This relationship is found to be independent of the cone angle and the fines in the feed. The performance of the water-only cyclone has been analyzed by plotting partition curves for different experimental conditions. In addition to this, the Rosin-Rammler equation has been fitted to the partition curves of the hulk feed and individual size-fractions. Tile analysis of the results has revealed that the specific gravity of separation increases with increase in the cone angle of the cyclone while it decreases with increase in percent fines present in the feed. Mathematical relationships have been developed to relate the variation in SG50 with cone angle and percent fines in the feed.

In this paper a simple three-layered medium is considered. A circular hole is centrally located in the intermediate layer. The layered sheet is loaded uniaxially perpendicular to the stratification. The Young's modulus of the intermediate layer is lower than that of the outer layers. The stress distribution around the circular hole in a stratified medium is significantly different when compared to the case of a continuous homogeneous medium. The distribution depends upon the ratio of the height of [the] intermediate layer and [the] hole diameter. A comparison of stress the distribution and procedures for preparation and testing of [the] model are given. The potential of the technique is outlined.

[INTRODUCTION] The significance of gamma exposure to uranium miners has been recognized only in the last few years. Most ore deposits which have been underground mined, were 1% or less U308. Full-time mining of this grade ore can result in exposure exceeding 1 Rem per year. Several companies in Saskatchewan are planning to mine recently discovered ore bodies which contain ore pods in excess of 10% U308. The purpose of this paper is to present dose data which can be used to estimate gamma exposure from high-grade ore deposits, and to present mining techniques which will minimize miner exposure. [Dose Estimates] When one has a point source of radiation, the conventional laws of isotropic emission and the fall of dose with square of the distance, make dose calculations relatively easy. However, if one has an area source of infinite thickness, the assumption must be made that a uniform gamma flux is being emitted from all faces of the source (Figure 1). Dose from gamma emission would fall off only due to air attenuation up to such a distance at which the source can be considered to be a point source (usually 10 times the largest dimension of the source). For short distances, such as to the cab of ore-moving equipment, the dose reduction would be negligible. Assumptions: 1) Radium and gamma-emitting daughters are in secular equilibrium with uranium. 2) All gamma radiation is emitted from radium and its daughters. 3) Average gamma energy of 0.8 MeV. 4) Uranium ore has a linear attenuation coefficient of 0.212 cm-1, similar to that of Si02(sand). 5) Uranium ore density of 3.0 gm/cm3. 6) One curie of radium emits 6.84 x 1010 photon/sec(l). 7) One percent uranium ore contains 1 x 10-8 Ci/cm3 of radium. 8) Each MeV of 0.8 MeV photon results in a dose of 2.10[ ]10-3 mRem/hr. per MeV/cm2 -sec. 1) 9) Minimum ore depth 100 cm. 10) Linear attenuation coefficient instant for radium gamma of 0.374 cm -1 [ ] The photon flux from a radioactive slab is computed as follows: [Flux = photon/cm3 3(1) 2u S] [where, us is the linear absorption coefficient of s the source (uranium ore).] Thus, 1% uranium ore, in the form of an infinite slab, emits 1613 photon/cm2-sec, which results in a dose rate of 2.71 mRem/hr. CURD started producing pellets in 1969, with one two-million ton straight grate plant. In the beginning of April '73, the second unit came on stream with an additional capacity of 3 million TPY of pellets. In January '77, the third unit started, bringing the annual capacity to 8 million TPY. For the present year 3 more units, 3 million each, are expected to begin production. CVRD's experience is given about the use of different binders and additives. Over the years several kinds of pellets have been produced to satisfy the market requirements. General quality information is given regarding each.

Direct-reduction processes for converting iron ores to metallic iron in the solid state have been available for some time; and whenever scrap becomes expensive, there is a new wave of interest in these processes. It is well established that direct reduction, coupled with electric-furnace steelmaking, is a technically viable method for making steel and in some circumstances is economically competitive with the conventional blast-furnace--basic-oxygen-process (BOP) route to steel. This raises a number of interesting questions, several of which could be of great interest to the coal and ore mining industries. For example, what are the quality requirements of the raw materials for direct-reduction--electric-furnace steelmaking? Would they be different from the present requirements for blast-furnace--BOP steelmaking? Other questions relate to how much steel will be made by the direct-reduction route in the future. The quality questions can be discussed with a fair degree of certainty, but a prediction of the amount of steel that will be produced by the direct-reduction--electric-furnace route is beyond the scope of this paper. However, an attempt will be made to identify some of the factors that will influence whether there is a swing to direct reduction and the rate at which it may occur.

Mining activities have recently been taken place in Vourinos mountain, northern Greece, exploiting the so-called ?olivinite?. A representative sample was collected from this mining area. Mineralogical analysis was conducted using X-Ray powder Diffraction (XRD). A thin section was prepared and analyzed under optical microscope. X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) was employed for the chemical analyses of major, mi-nor and trace elements. Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy coupled with energy dispersive x-ray analysis system (ESEM-EDX) was also applied for the characterization of the sample. Forsterite (Mg-rich olivine) and enstatite (Mg-rich orthopyroxene) were the main mineral phases determined by XRD, with a 56% and 44% content respectively. Trace amounts of chromite spinels were also determined. Based on this characterization, the industrial rock proved to be a hartzburgite (a type of peridotite in petrological terms). Optical microscopy and ESEM-EDX provided similar observations and confirmed the above-mentioned results. XRF revealed a composition of 43.31 MgO, 44.25 SiO2, 9.98 Fe2O3, 1.40 CaO, 0.67 Al2O3, 0.22 MnO, 0.01 TiO2 and negligible amount of LOI (<0.1%). Trace elements with high concentrations were Cr (2678 ppm) and Ni (2044 ppm). The comprehensive characterization of this mining product suggested the suitability for various uses, such as refractories, foundry and slag conditioner. Additional experiments are being carried out for environmental applications, e.g. wastewater treatment.

A process for the separation and recovery of cobalt and nickel was optimized for a sulfate leach solution of Indian Ocean sea nodules containing 80 g/m3 cobalt and 730 g/m3 nickel using the sodium salt of Cyanex 272 as the extractant. Extraction of both cobalt and nickel increased with an increase in equilibrium pH and extractant concentration. The extracted species with respect to cobalt appears to be CoA2.3HA. More than 99.6% extraction of cobalt was achieved using 0.04M solvent in a three-stage counter current simulation at the A:O phase ratio of 3:2. The co-extraction of nickel was about 0.6% only. Two-stage countercurrent stripping of cobalt from the loaded organic at an A:O ratio of 1: 7 resulted in a pregnant electrolyte enriched by 0.8 kg/m3, thus enabling a ten times overall enrichment of cobalt. From the cobalt free raffinate, nickel extraction was carried out using 0.25M solvent in two countercurrent stages, and the extraction showed a 99.8% recovery. Stripping of nickel from the loaded solvent was carried out at an equal phase ratio with the advance electrolyte of pH 1.75 in two countercurrent stages. The nickel stripping efficiency was found to be 98.8%. The present studies indicated that complete recovery of cobalt and nickel was possible using nine counter-current stages.

The near-infrared (NIR) (12,000-4,000 cm-1) region of the electromagnetic spectrum, between the mid-infrared and visible, has often been viewed by spectroscopists to be of limited utility. This is unfortunate, and recently the use of the NIR has increased greatly, primarily for the quantitative analysis of food and agricultural products. However, many other areas of application of NIR spectroscopy remain unexamined. In this paper a novel use of NIR in the area of flotation chemistry is demonstrated. Specifically, it is shown that NIR/Internal Reflection Spectroscopy (IRS) can be used to quantify collector adsorption reactions in-situ.

The Environment Weipa is located at 12° south latitude on the west coast of Cape York Peninsula, North Queensland, Australia. The climate is tropical with most of the 1 600 mm. average annual rainfall falling between November and March. During the short winter months (May/ August) the weather is clear and pleasant, with temperatures seldom exceeding 27°C.Throughout the remainder of the year, conditions are frequently oppressive due to consistent high ambient temperatures accompanied by high humidity. The terrain is of low relief, and generally not more than 6 to 10m. above mean sea level adjacent to the coast. The coastline features numerous short estuaries which discharge run-off from the heavy rains collected by creeks and rivers. The whole area is covered by an open forest, the predominant species of which is Eucalyptus tetradonta. These eucalypts have only limited commercial value and are heavily infested with termites. Despite the fact that Weipa is close to the location of the first reported sighting of the Australian coastline by a European (William Janz - 1606), it remains very isolated. There is no developed road or rail connection to centres of population, so that transport of practically all products, personnel and materials to and from Weipa is by sea and air. Before the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990, coal policies-especially coal research policies-were geared to find a solution to the sulfur emission problem. However, technologies to reduce sulfur emissions cannot be tailored for a single coal. A technology that will clean Illinois coal to compliance levels will do the same, or nearly the same, for most other types of coal. This paper will discuss an integrated approach to the analysis of the future of coals from different regions in the United States and its implications for coal-related policies by government and industry.

An application of goal programming (GP) in evaluation of proposed purchases of major mining machinery is presented. It incorporates historical operating data compiled on mechanical delays to production time. The goal programming technique, which is an extension of integer programming, is used to maximize an objective function. The objective function combines the capital budgeting evaluation methods of net present value, payback period, profitability index, and total net earnings as goals weighted according to a management preference. The GP method gives an optimal solution to a multiple-goal problem. A sensitivity analysis is performed to determine the effect of an increased production forecast or a tightened budget on proposal selection.

There are a number of factors, including mine geometry, local geology, geotechnical properties of overburden materials, surface topography, sequence of overburden strata, and extraction rate, affecting characteristics of surface subsidence imposed by large underground excavation. Among the factors, the first three have the major impact on magnitude and area of influence of final subsidence. Hence, a model has been developed, considering mine geometry and geologic and geotechnical properties of the associated area, to predict maximum possible subsidence and subsidence profile at any cross-section within the subsidence influence zone. Based on extensive field measurements and mechanics of strata behavior, under the action of overburden pressure in the vicinity of the large underground excavation, the vertical plane of influence zone has been divided into five areas: 1) excavated, 2) caved, 3) fractured, 4) highly deformed but continuous, and 5) subsided zones. In the final state of subsidence each area maintains a certain volume expansion/contraction, i.e. a factor which depends on geologic, geotechnical properties of overburden strata and state of stress within the subsidence trough. The cumulative volume expansion and contraction partially compensates for the extracted volume and the difference between the two is reflected as the subsided area in the form of the area within a curve defined by a probability function. The input parameters for the model are mine geometry (i.e. length and width of the panel), depth of cover, and geologic and geotechnical properties of overburden strata (i.e. percentage of hardrock, sandstone and limestone, and soft rock, shale within the overburden strata and Rock Quality Designation). The model calculates angle of draw for the site, expansion factor for each zone utilizing empirical relationships, maximum possible subsidence and plots the subsidence profile curve. The model is developed for a longwall excavation with unique characteristics of prediction of angle of draw and maximum possible subsidence for a given geologic and mining condition at any cross-section within the influence zone of subsidence.

The successful selection of a slurry pump depends on the accuracy and completeness of the information provided for the application. Inaccurate or incomplete information can result in incorrect pump selection and / or operational problems. Some information is more critical to the selection process than other information. A full description of the slurry (liquid -solid mixture) including the particle size distribution and maximum concentration, the flow, head and NPSH requirements are most important for successful slurry pump selection and operation. Common problems resulting from improper slurry pump selection will be discussed to illustrate the need for correct selection requirements.

The world&apos;s largest fluidized bed steam generator located at Rivesville, West Virginia is currently undergoing initial operation. This unit is designed to generate 3708 kg/s (300,000 Ib/hr) equivalent to 30 MWe of superheated steam while firing coal in a fluidized bed of limestone. Coal was first fired in this unit in December, 1976 and start up operation is progressing.

In May 1975 the U. S. Bureau of Mines contracted with the University of Missouri-Rolla, Rock Mechanics and Explosives Research Center to develop a Hydrominer modification to a long-wall shearer unit, wherein the rotating pick-laced drums and connecting gear drives are replaced by a water jet cutting head.1 The concept of the water jet cutting head is based on using the high localized energy of the water jets to isolate a slice of coal by cutting a slot under, at the back of, and at the top of the web. The plow blade of the head then advances into the cut and wedges the pillar over onto the conveyor (Figure 1). There were several potential advantages foreseen for the system of which perhaps the most significant were the elimination of coal dust from the working area2 and the ability, with a variation in nozzle geometry, to cut webs of greater depth with a small increase in equipment horsepower. The University initially designed the head, based on experiments carried out in the laboratory, under an earlier Bureau of mines contract. The experiments showed that it was more advantageous to work at a pressure of 10,000 psi with an estimated flow rate of 50 gpm than go to the higher pressures and lower flow rates which have been advocated elsewhere.

Field data combined with theoretical derivations were used to design a surface mining operation using explosive casting. Calculated casting results varied from 44% to 65% depending on bench height. The field tests were performed at an Eastern, contour, coal stripping operation. Results from five experimental casting shots, using a shovel and trucks, are summarized and compared to conventional mining methods. The overburden material removed by casting ranged from 35% to 65%, with an average of 50%. Fragmentation was improved, and it was demonstrated that this procedure is economically attractive, with a resultant cost savings of $0.59/m3 or $5.93/t of clean coal.
