INTRODUCTION The County of Cornwall is situated in the South Western extremity of England, see Fig. 1, and has for hundreds of years been an historical centre of mining activity. In the last century many thousands of Cornish miners emigrated to Canada, U.S.A., Australia and numerous other countries throughout the world to form the nucleii of mining industries in those lands. At present there are four active underground mines within the county, all mining tin, together with a relatively large china clay industry. All the operations are directly or indirectly associated with the three main granite intrusions, namely the Land's End Granite, the Carnmenellis Granite and the Bodmin Moor Granite. The report which follows relates to two mines, owned by the South Crafty Group of Companies, namely the South Crofty Mine itself and its smaller subsidiary, Wheal Pendarves. Both these mines are adjacent to the Carn Brea Granite ridge, see Fig. 2, which is an off-shoot of the main Carnmenellis Granite mass. The Carn Brea Granite has provided one of the most intensive areas of copper and tin mineralisation anywhere in the world. Many of the mines worked during the last two centuries and the early part of this century were situated close to the metamorphic aureole surrounding the granite intrusion. Both South Crofty and Wheal Pendarves have their shafts collared in the overlying slate, locally known as killas, but the major part of their workings are in the granite beneath. The ore bodies, or lodes, of both mines are generally steeply dipping and approximately one to four metres in width. They have been, and continue to be, worked by either back or under-hand stoping with the major level interval being approximately 37 metres. A feature of both stoping systems is that they require no back filling and in many cases the completed working areas have remained open for many years due to the competent wall rock conditions. The stoping operation necessitates having box-holes or draw points at regular intervals along the strike length at 4 to 7 metres centres; thus a stope some 50 metres long may typically have ten box-holes or draw points through which air can percolate into the empty stopes above. The granite country rock contains traces of uranium minerals, namely pitchblende or uraninite, and it is the decay of this uranium mineral which leads to the formation of the mobile radon gas which, together with its short lived daughters, may create a hazard. The presence of uranium minerals has long been known, but the quantities being so minute, it was not appreciated until some ten to fifteen years ago that these might present a hazard. The Mines and Quarries Inspectorate approached Management approximately ten years ago with a view to taking samples in areas of the mine that they felt might contain the highest concentrations of radon. Samples were thus taken in several areas of both mines, normally well away from working areas and where there was no through ventilation. The results of these initial tests were published by the National Radiological Protection Board in a paper entitled "Radon and Its Daughters in Various British Mines". The results of the initial surveys made it apparent that improved ventilation was the most important factor in reducing radon daughter concentrations within the mine atmosphere, with increased flow rates having three beneficial functions, viz. (1) To dilute radon daughter concentrations. (2) To prevent radon and its daughters reaching a state of equilibrium. It is not uncommon for radon and its daughters to have a disequilibrium factor of 1,000 in some uranium mines.

The long and arduous process of bringing aggregate produced in Mexico to the Gulf Coast of the United States really began in the 1970s when the first exploratory trips were taken by Vulcan's geologists. It was not until the middle of the 1980s that all of the elements of the project seemed favorable and the largest capital investment in Vulcan's history was given the green light. The history of the project will be covered along with a discussion of the role that market forecasting played in the process. Is this the first of many or a once in a lifetime project? In July 1987, Vulcan and its joint venture partner broke ground in Mexico for a world-class limestone quarry and crushed stone production facility. This project is the largest ever undertaken by Vulcan's Construction Materials Group, with a total cost of over 200 million dollars -a cost shared equally by Vulcan and its joint venture partner, Ingenieros Civiles Associados, or ICA, a diversified Mexican company which is also the largest construction firm in Latin America.

The subject of this paper is mineral processing chemicals - how they work and where they end up environmentally. First of all, it is necessary to recognize that water is the most universally and widely used chemical used by the mining industry to separate desirable minerals from unwanted wastes, sands, and slimes. Of the total world's water supply, over 97 percent is found in the oceans. Another two percent is tied up in the ice caps, leaving roughly only one percent for us to work with. This one percent is distributed either as ground or surface water and makes up the bulk of all water used industrially. Even with such a small proportion available for immediate use, there appears to be enough fresh water to meet our needs for at least another hundred years. This availability, however, depends heavily on how we handle our waste waters, how we process them, and how we plan for their reuse. Certain governmental agencies have been charged with the task of setting up standards of water quality which must be met prior to environmental discharge. There is even discussion of zero discharge from industrial operations. Due to limited supply and availability, the mining industry has always been forced to reuse its process water or to treat it prior to discharge. Consequently, we are in an enviable position and are presently able to live with the environmentalists demands. To stay on top of the situation, it is necessary to continually concern ourselves with the .effects of changing orebodies and reagents on the final mill effluent. From a process standpoint, it is also important to recognize the impurities of plant recycle water and how they might tend to influence overall operations

Based on the mechanical essence that large-scale plastic failure zone appears in all or part of surrounding rock in soft rock roadway, the numerical simulation method is used to study the rectangular roadway in layered rock strata. It is clarified necessary conditions must be met for soft rock: firstly, the strength condition is that the maximum confining pressure is greater than the uniaxial compressive strength of rock strata. Secondly, the stress environment condition is that the ratio of maximum confining pressure to minimum confining pressure is greater than 3. Thirdly, the angle condition is that The direction of principal stress action enables the plastic zone of weak rock layers to fully develop. At the same time, the quantitative description method of soft rock is given, and the soft rock roadway is redefined. Soft rock roadway refers to the roadway that meets the strength conditions, stress environment conditions, and rock structure angle conditions under certain surrounding rock conditions and in-situ stress environment conditions. After the excavation of the roadway, a large-scale plastic failure can be formed, that is, a butterfly-shaped plastic zone is formed, and the conventional support cannot be adapted. It is difficult to support in engineering. It provides a theoretical basis and engineering analysis method for the identification of soft rock roadway, and the research results have engineering value Soft rock tunnel engineering in coal mines constitutes a vital aspect of soft rock engineering. This field broadly encompasses rock engi- neering concerning large plastic deformations, e.g., soft rock slope engineering and soft rock tunnel engineering. The intricate geological conditions encountered in soft rock tunnel engineering present a significant challenge to support, which has harmed coal production in China. China leads global raw coal production with the annual output of 4.6 billion tons. Annual tunnel excavation supporting this production spans approximately 11,000 km, with over 10% of these tunnels classified as soft rock formations. Soft rock is commonly associated with soft rock tunnels due to their prevalence in engineering projects. However, reaching a consensus on the definition of soft rock has long been an enduring challenge for scholars and engineers. Numerous definitions have been proposed, includ- ing descriptive, index, and engineering definitions. For instance, the International Society for Rock Mechanics defines soft rock based on its uniaxial compressive strength σ ranging from 0.5 to 25 MPa. China's Engineering Rock Body Standards, established in 1994 (GB 50218-94), take a qualitative and quantitative approach to classifying rocks. Rocks are categorized as hard or soft based on criteria such as hammering sound, fragmentation, water immersion effects, and weath- ering degree. Additionally, the integrity of rock bodies is assessed across five categories intact, relatively intact, soft fractured, fractured, and extremely fractured. This classification considers factors like the number and spacing of structural planes, their combination, and the types of structures. Descriptive and index-based definitions fall under the category of geological soft rocks, providing a comprehensive geological perspective on the surface features or strength characteristics. However, these definitions have limitations in engineering practice, which leads to contradic- tions. For instance, rocks with uniaxial compressive strength less than 25 MPa may not exhibit soft rock characteristics if the tunnel is shal- low with low horizontal stress levels. Conversely, rocks with compressive strength exceeding 25 MPa at sufficient depth and high horizontal stress may exhibit soft rock characteristics. Definitions originating from engineering practice have emerged after realizing the inadequacy of discussing soft rocks without considering engineering. For instance, Dong's loose circle theory defines soft rocks as rocks with a loose circle thickness exceeding 1.5 m, which chal- lenges conventional supports. This intuitive definition, widely accepted by engineering professionals, emphasizes the difficulty in supporting tunnels due to extensive damage. However, various tunnel damage poses a challenge in relying solely on the loose circle thickness of tunnels for determining soft rocks. He introduced the concept of engineering soft rocks, which are defined as rock formations exhibiting significant plastic deformations under applied engineering force. Two fundamental mechanical properties of soft rocks are identified the critical softening load and critical soft- ening depth. In metallurgical applications, coal fulfills dual roles as a chemical feed stock and as a fuel source. These applications range from cokemaking, ironrnaking (including pulverized coal injection), foundry, basic oxygen furnace / electric arc furnace coal additions, direct ironrnaking, Corex, and the futuristic direct steelmaking. In all steelmaking related processes, chemical reactions are simultaneously temperature and chemical dependent. Therefore, coals used in these processes must consistently comply with specific quality parameters in order to promote efficient operations. This paper limits discussion of Metallurgical Coal Quality to cokemaking and ironmaking applications. Its purpose is to present the customer's perspective on the control of critical coal and coke properties.

INTRODUCTION Historically, pollution control in the metal-ore mining industry has been very limited. Unless mine water contained large quantities of solids, it was generally discharged without any treatment. If treatment was used to control solids, it was principally the provision of a settling basin in the form of a tailings impoundment used in conjunction with an associated metal ore dressing facility. Recently, however, a growing awareness of the adverse environmental impacts of mine drainage, coupled with strict environmental laws, has prompted the mining industry to look at new technologies and to refine the existing methods to further treat the wastes generated. This industry is unique in that waste loadings are extremely variable, and a "typical facility with typical waste loads" does not exist. Consequently, one waste- water treatment system cannot be utilized on an industry wide basis; rather, each treatment system must be designed specifically for the pollutants in each individual discharge. Public Law 92-500, the Federal Water Pollution Control Act (FWPCA) Amendments of 1972, became effective on Oct. 18, 1972. This law completely restructured Federal laws and philosophies underlying the Federal approach to water pollution control. Prior to the 1972 amendments, the principal Federal regulatory tool had been water-quality standards based on a designated use for a particular body of water. The concept was that waste disposal into water bodies is a desirable and acceptable use of the water body if it does not interfere with other beneficial uses. This had the effect of requiring various degrees of treatment and, consequently, various economic hardships on industries de- pendent upon their location. In many waterways. it is very difficult to quantitatively relate discharges to water quality. The 1972 amendments changed the basic philosophy, as stated in the Senate Committee report on the bill, to ". . . no one has the right to pollute . . . that pollution continues because of technological limits, not because of any inherent right to use the nation's waterways for the purpose of disposing of wastes." Pursuant to Sections 301, 304(b), and 306 of the FWPCA Amendments of 1972, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was required to establish effluent standards applicable to all industrial discharges. These standards must be based upon the application of the "best practicable control technology currently avail- able" (BPT) and the application of the "best available technology economically achievable" (BAT). The BPT and BAT levels must be achieved industry-wide by July 1, 1977, and July 1, 1983, respectively. WASTE SOURCES The waste-water situation in the mining segment of the ore mining and dressing industry is unlike that encountered in most other industries. Most industries (e.g., the milling segment of this industry) utilize water in the specific processes they employ. This water frequently becomes contaminated during the process and must be treated prior to discharge. However, in the mining segment, process water normally is not utilized in the actual mining of ores (exceptions are hydraulic mining operations and dust control), but it is a natural occurrence that interferes with mining activities and must be removed before mining can commence. Water enters mines by ground-water infiltration and surface runoff, and it comes into contact with materials in the host rock, ore, and overburden. The underground mine must pump large quantities of ground water to prevent flooding of the mine. Water from surface mining operations generally occurs as a result of surface runoff of rainwater. Generally, mining operations control surface runoff through the use of diversion ditching and grading to prevent, as much as possible, excess water from entering the working area. Nevertheless, some surface runoff does come into contact with the working area and may become contaminated. The quantity of water from an .ore mine is unrelated, or only indirectly related, to production quantities. De- pending upon its quality, the mine water may require treatment before it can be discharged into the surface drainage network. The variability of water quality from mines can best be demonstrated by looking at Table 1. This table shows the range of pollutant concentrations in untreated discharges from three different categories of mines (as categorized by EPA in the development of BPT and BAT effluent standards for the metal-mining industry). Data for this table were obtained during EPA's preparation of effluent standards for this industry. The parameters shown on the table are the pollutant parameters of primary interest in this industry; blanks in the table indicate that data were not available, and the parameter is not expected to be present in significant quantities. Other pollutant parameters are present in mining waste water, but they are either incidentally removed in the treatment process or are found only in trace amounts. The three categories comprise more than 90% of the metal production value in the United States and approximately 95% of the total mine discharges. It is important to note that not all parameters are found in significant concentrations at all locations. IMPACT ON WATER QUALITY One of the most troublesome mine-drainage problems is acidity. Although generally associated with coal mining, acid mine drainage frequently occurs from other types of mines. Although the exact mechanism of acid mine drainage is not fully understood, it generally is believed that pyrite (iron sulfide, FeS,) is oxidized by oxygen (Eq. 1) or ferric iron (Eq. 2) to produce ferrous sulfate (FeSO4) and sulfuric acid (H2SO4) . The mining of ores associated with pyritic material exposes the pyrites to water and oxygen and grossly accelerates the natural oxidation processes, resulting in the significant production of acid mine drainage.

A thorough geological engineering investigation is required before surface lands overlying abandoned underground mines can be safely recommended as building sites. The major problems confronting the geological engineer are assembling accurate geologic and mining information and developing an accurate rock mechanics model of the situation. A successful investigation requires a combination of technical expertise in rock mechanics and engineering geology tempered with practical engineering judgment. The results of a good study are not always favorable to the prospective builder.

As an advanced method of rock engineering construction safety monitoring, microseismic monitoring technology can monitor the micro-fracture of rock masses within an effective range, and then perform forecast analysis of rockburst, cracking, falling blocks and other disasters. Although the application of microseismic monitoring technology has become more mature, how to improve its application efficiency remains to be further studied. At present, artificial intelligence has been extensively developed, and the use of intelligent algorithms to improve the efficiency of rockburst forecast can provide a valuable reference for the safe construction of underground engineering. To this end, this paper proposes a microseismic multi-parameter rockburst early warning model based on dynamic Bayesian networks. First, the sensitivity of microseismic source parameters to rockburst forecast is analyzed based on microseismic monitoring data and actual rockburst information of a hydropower station. Second, the main seismic source parameters and their data are selected and imported into a dynamic Bayesian network for learning to obtain the rockburst forecast model. The model is confirmed in its self-validation and K times cross-validation, and the receiver operating characteristic curve of the model is also analyzed, it is found that the area under the curve is close to 1, indicating that the model has good accuracy. Finally, the analysis of the influence strength of the parent and child nodes in the model reveals that the moment magnitude and source scale are the most sensitive parameters, which can be used as an important reference for rockburst forecast.

Conditional simulation provides a model of the ore body that represents variability in the data. This can be used to determine the impact of various grade control and mining strategies. A number of transfer functions are discussed that assist in optimizing grade control sampling. The cost effectiveness of various drilling and trenching techniques are discussed. Modelling of the expected performance of a mill head grade sampler is investigated. Conclusions are drawn about the likely impact of various sampling techniques on the economic performance of an operation and about applying sampling theory to grade control sampling.

A liquid and solid waste management plan for an operating uranium ore processing mill was developed to efficiently and effectively dispose of existing solid wastes and related, affected surface and ground water resources. The goal of this management plan was to achieve satisfactory clean up of these existing wastes ad their by-products as well as to prevent similar situations from occurring in the future. An existing, modern system of synthetically lined tailings ponds, constructed after many years of mill operations, now provides an approved site for the disposal and containment of waste streams currently generated by the mill. This system was thought to be readily adaptable to serve as a key element of the waste management plan. The potential presence of extra capacity in these ponds could eliminate or reduce expenditures for new facilities required solely for proper management of liquid and solid wastes generated by operations prior to construction of the modern tailings ponds as well as for a range of anticipated future operations.

Theoretical considerations, experimental results and plant experience have lead to a new design concept called the unit reactor approach. It has been successfully implemented to the largest flotation cell on the market, the 4000 cu ft OK TankCell. The work has also lead to a new operating idea called size specific flotation. The paper discusses these concepts in the view of full scale field experiments. In large scale porphyry copper flotation experiments conducted in Chile the new large TankCell with its new low energy input Free Flow mechanism out-performed the more conventional designs. The recovery was substantially better, especially in the coarse fractions. In some experiments the difference in total recovery was up to 10%-units and the savings in total energy consumption at the same time over 40%.

Mining induced seismicity and rockbursts have been part of the deep level gold mining industry in South Africa for many years. One could be forgiven for thinking that we should know everything there is to know by now to have rockbursting under control to a level that it has minimal impact on safety and production. Well, we don’t… There are things we know that we know, and they are implemented, or should be. There are thigs we know that we don’t know, and they are researched, or should be. There are things we don’t know that we don’t know, and, well, we don’t know… We know that seismicity and the associated potential for rockbursts generally increase with an increase in stress (increase in mining depth and/or mining span and creation of remnants) and proximity to faults and dykes. We know there are a number of potential sources of events in a mine; that is: mining abutments, pillar abutments, mining faces and geological structures (faults and dykes). We know there are a number of event mechanisms associated with these sources; that is: slip on a geological structure, shear through intact rock and bursting of the rock near the edge of a mining excavation. One of the tools used more and more and with increased success to identify event source mechanisms is Moment-Tensor analysis (MT). This typically assist in differentiating between three event mechanism components: volumetric deformation component, axial deformation component and slip / shear component. The insight gained from MT assist greatly in identifying the most likely event source to assist in understanding the rockmass response to mining. We know that the seismic response in our mines are mining induced (not natural). This may seem trivial, but it is important to realise that we influence the seismic response with the way we mine, and by how much we mine (extraction ratio). Therefore we put design rules and strategies in place to reduce the seismic hazard and we install rockburst support in our mining excavations. We know the seismic response to mining is influenced by the properties of the rockmass, including strength, stiffness and brittleness, but quantifying its influence is typically more difficult than expected. We know numerical modelling can improve the engineer’s understanding of the potential rockmass response associated with designed mining layouts and strategies. For our environment (narrow, tabular large area) elastic boundary element modelling remains the most convenient and practical approach, but it overestimates the stress at mining abutments and underestimates the stress further away from these abutments. Adding a crushing (based in limit equilibrium) modelling approach vastly improves the boundary element modelling ability to simulate the deformed (interpret fractured) zones and associated redistribution of stress. We don’t know how to quantify what an acceptable seismic risk is. We don’t know if we can mine remnants at an acceptable seismic risk. Some remnants are extracted surprisingly easy, others serve us with devastating rockbursts. The limit equilibrium modelling shows potential to significantly improve our ability to quantify the rockburst risk. We don’t know if large-scale preconditioning is possible and will be effective to significantly reduce the seismic risk associated with remnant and pillar mining. Research is required (and has been initiated). Vast areas of ground have been extracted historically in the South African gold fields. Most gold reserves are now in deeper ground (4000 m) and historic remnants (areas left before due to mining difficulties) as well as pillars (regional stability pillars). If we cannot find ways to extract these reserves at acceptable risk levels, the future of the South African gold mining industry is very short.

"The immediate ring closure method, in which the entire periphery of the excavation area is closed immediately with an initial support within a short distance from the excavation face, has been increasingly used in Japan, especially, as one of the most effective countermeasures against difficult ground conditions in conventional tunneling. For reasonable design of this method, the performance requirements for the initial support should be clearly stated. The analysis of construction data of 30 road tunnels and the three-dimensional numerical modeling based on real data suggest that the immediate ring closure stabilizes the tunnel structure and the ground around it because of the inner pressure effect of the initial support, especially, for low ground competence factor and small internal friction angle. Finally, the bending compressive strength and the cross-sectional geometry of the initial support have to be considered in the tunnel design while considering the earth pressure and ground properties. INTRODUCTION Conventional tunneling methods often deal with difficult ground conditions such as soft ground or squeezing ground conditions. The immediate ring closure method, in which the entire periphery of the excavation area is immediately supported within a short distance from the excavation face (Figure 1), has been increasingly used in Japan as one of the most effective countermeasures against difficult ground conditions in conventional tunneling (e.g. Takahashi et al., 2011; Nakaoka et al., 2013). The immediate ring closure method was empirically identified as effective for reducing ground surface subsidence and tunnel deformation. However, the working effects of the method have not been clarified sufficiently. To improve the design of this method, the working effects of this method and the performance requirements for the initial support need to be clarified. The relation between the effect of immediate ring closure and earth cover has been clarified (Mashimo et al., 2008; Awaji et al., 2013),"

Infrastructures continue to age and drinking water supplies are becoming scarce in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles, California. Frontier-Kemper Constructors, Inc. (FKCI) was engaged by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) to complete the River Supply Conduit Improvement Upper Reach—Unit 7 Project (RSC7). Two tunnel sections were bored using a 2.64 meter diameter Microtunnel Boring Machine (MTBM) and a 4.12 meter diameter Earth Pressure Balance Tunnel Boring Machine (EPBTBM) to excavate approximately 3,733 meters (3.7 km) of tunnels through highly abrasive late-Pleistocene-age Quaternary alluvial deposits (Old Alluvium) and Holocene age Young Alluvium deposits above the water table. This paper discusses the challenges encountered managing the TBM’s equipment degradation, use of soil conditioners, cutterhead wear, torque and advance rates while maintaining the necessary face-pressures and parameters to limit over excavation and ground settlement.

The use of tritium in manufacturing and its subsequent loss to the local environment in Tucson, Arizona resulted in a great debate relative to the physiological effects of low level radiation. This paper reviews some of the facts of the release and attempts to quantify the degree of hazard encountered by the local community. Some of the difficulties in assessing the true degree of absorbed dose and the assumptions necessary for calculation purposes are presented.

A heavy mineral sand sample was tested containing 13% heavy mineral consisting of rutile, zircon, and ilmenite. Eleven tests were run at a mill site with a Mineral Deposit Limited MG 4 spiral to determine the effect of the addition 0; magnets to the spiral compared to conventional gravity separation. Different magnet configurations and field strengths were tested. Optimum results were obtained with the spiral retrofitted with magnets. The heavy mineral content of the concentrate was increased from 55.5% in the control to 64.2% with the magnets. The 8.7% improvement in heavy mineral recovery was due not only to the weakly-magnetic ilmenite, but also to increased recoveries if the non-magnetic zircon and rutile. The increased recoveries were achieved with no loss of concentrate grade.

Technology and economies of scale have, in the past decade, brought about the emergence of giant vessels. Meanwhile, to answer the need for rapid dispatch, as a means of combating the proportionately far greater demurrage charges, shiploading and unloading speeds have soared (Ref. 1, 2, 3). As the loading and unloading rates have dramatically increased, so has the cloud of dust grown in unbearable proportions. It not only has threatened to be a real menace to machinery and men, but in certain instances has also seriously jeopardized fish and marine life (Ref. 4). In an era when ecology is king, dust in shiploading and unloading can no longer be shrugged off as a mere public nuisance, and its control is now duly recognized as of grave concern to all. Even if public outcry were not a problem, from the operator's own parochial point of view, dust can adversely affect productivity and the well-being of the operating personnel. Without adequate control, it can also result in costly equipment maintenance, particularly when the dust is micronic in size, and abrasive. Glencore’s Nickel Rim South Mine, located in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, is a primary/secondary blasthole operation with ore zones lying between 1,100 and 1,700 m below surface. One of the main benefits of the primary/secondary mining method in high stress ground is that up to 50% of the mining will take place in secondary stopes that should be in a yielded rock mass state. Every future secondary mining stope begins as a primary stope abutment pillar. As with many mines, the stress loading history and rock mass conditions can vary considerably in space and time. Safe mining practices cannot allow for an assumption that the planned secondary stopes are indeed yielded. An incorrect assumption can result in mining development and stoping taking place in high stress ground rather than the expected yielded rock mass conditions. This can result in higher levels of seismicity than expected and incorrect ground support recommendations in areas where workers could be exposed. Seismic monitoring is the mines’ premier tool to track the actual rock mass response to mining. Yielded zones have a reasonably clear seismic signature/pattern over time that is visible in the collected data. The ability to accurately locate small magnitude seismic events can help define and delineate different stages of rock mass failure. The vast majority of the seismic data recorded by the microseismic monitoring system is below moment magnitude (Mw) 0.0. Examples are provided showing how small seismic events (Mw < -1.5) can help provide feedback from the rock mass deformation that allows the ground control engineer to gain a better understanding of how the rock mass is responding to mining processes.

The Broken Hill proprietary company Limited grate kiln pellet plant (1) located at Whyalla in South Australia commenced production on May 13, 1968. During commissioning, about 25,000 long tons of fluxed pellets were produced. Plant performance was satisfactory and acceptable under the plant guarantee. For production reasons, it was necessary to curtail the fluxed pellet run and revert to the production of acid pellets. In 1970, some 250,000 long tons of fluxed pellets were produced under varying operating conditions to determine the requirements for optimum quality pellets at acceptable production rates. In excess of 180,000 long tons of these fluxed pellets were exported to Japan. Problems experienced in production of the fluxed pellets are detailed, and the quality of the fluxed pellets compared to that of normal acid pellets produced at Whyalla. Brief Plant Details Run of mine ore treated was predominantly soft and friable and contained an average of 66 per cent Fe, 1.7 per cent Si02 and 1.8 per cent Al203. The main iron mineral in the ore was hematite with some martite also present. Plant feed was ground dry in ball mills 11 ft in diameter by 29 ft long to a Blaine surface area of 1600 sq.cm/g and the ground ore was wetted in a pug mill. Balling was carried out in balling drums 10 ft in diameter by 32 ft long. Induration equipment included an eighteen windbox grate 12 ft 2 in. wide by 164 ft 1 in. long, a rotary kiln 18 ft 6 in. diameter by 118 ft 8 in. long and an annular cooler 50 ft mean diameter by 7 it wide.
