Utilizing the technology developed for oil well stimulation by hydrofracing, a disposal system which permanently fixes the waste has been proven. Large quantities of radioactive waste can be processed by a single well system making this method an attractive method for permanent radioactive waste disposal. The system depends on locating a relatively thick formation of impermeable, but easily fracturable rock such as a shale, creating a horizontal fracture, pumping the waste into the fracture in a form which will subsequently solidify and seal the fracture from the well system. The paper presents the theoretical considerations from creating and extending horizontal fractures and how these considerations were used in designing a waste disposal system which is now operating.

Historical production data and reserve decline rates can be used both to predict future coal production rates and to estimate when the reserve will be depleted. Reserve estimates inferred herein from historical production data and decline rates are commonly lower than estimates made from geologic data. The latter include significant amounts of lower quality (deeper, thinner, higher sulfur) coal which may be mined when the better deposits are depleted.

The objective of this chapter is to discuss the interrelationship between industrial minerals and chemical manufacturing. It is intended to supplement rather than duplicate the commodity chapters. Particular emphasis is given to the pertinent chemical element and to market factors. Condensing this broad subject into a few pages of this handbook permits treating only the most important elements derived from industrial minerals. Hydrocarbons, which quantitatively dominate as raw materials for the chemical industry, are omitted, as are the metallic elements and the minerals covered in other "use" chapters such as phosphorous, potassium, and nitrogen for fertilizers, and titanium dioxide for pigments. The remaining six elements of major importance are: boron, bromine, chlorine, fluorine, sodium, and sulfur. These elements are treated individually under separate headings. [Table 1] affords an overview of the main industrial minerals, the chemical products derived from them, and end uses of the products. Salt brines have particular importance as raw material sources for the chemical industry. Table 2 is a chart of the chemical compounds derived from four types of brines: (1) Owens Lake-type brines, which are sources of boron and sodium compounds; (2) Midland-type brines, from which bromine, iodine, and chlorides of calcium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium are derived; (3) Searles Lake-type brines, yielding boron, bromine, lithium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium compounds; and (4) Silver Peak- type brines, produced mainly for lithium. MARKET ATTRIBUTES Some of the important market traits common to industrial minerals used by the chemical industry are: 1. They are international commodities, such as fluorspar and sulfur, which largely move to foreign consumers. 2. Grade, and freedom from deleterious elements are important factors affecting their usability in chemical processes. An example is salt (NaCl) used in electrolysis where ultrapure evaporated salt is required to meet rigid specifications. 3. Purified products take on the characteristics of specialty items and command a distinctly higher price than the basic commodity from which they are derived. 4. In practically all cases, chemical users require some sort of cleaning or beneficiation of the naturally-occurring mineral to bring it to specification, and individual specifications may vary from user to user for essentially the same use. 5. In some instances it is necessary to strike a balance between what the vendor can supply and what the buyer requires, with the result that specifications have to be eased to afford the needed materials in marginal cases. 6. Because they tend to be bulk commodities, low cost for handling and transportation are important and such costs may limit the area from which a chemical user can draw his supply. 7. Shipments are usually in bulk and frequently in multiple-car, full-trainload or full-shipload lots to reduce transport costs, which in turn may require large terminal investment facilities. 8. Purchases are generally by contract of one year or longer term, with spot buying playing only a minor role. 9. Contract prices are usually fixed in short term commitments, but may vary according to assay, with premiums and penalties for content above or below the norm; however, general practice is for specifications to be fixed in the contract with minimums being set for the desired material and maximums for undesired elements. In longer term contracts, prices are often escalated on labor, fuel, and other vendor processing costs. 10. Suppliers of individual commodities to the chemical industry tend to be limited in number and are generally medium- to large-size producers that supply a few major consumers. 11. The bulk of the mineral volume is for basic chemical uses, sulfur suppliers to sulfuric acid producers and fluorspar for hydrofluoric acid producers being typical examples. These basic chemical products then are used for the production of other products. 12. Shortage of a supply of adequate quality leads consumers to seek substitutes. In the case of fluorspar, much work is being done on recovery of fluorine from phosphate rock. Success in the form of fluorosilicic acid and/or hydrofluoric acid production could, in time, affect the hydrofluoric acid chemical industry. 13. Markets tend to be characterized by cycles of shortage followed by oversupply, with attendant wide price fluctuations. 14. Baniers to trade can have an adverse effect on the necessary movement of industrial minerals used by the chemical industry in international trade. Antidumping laws, quotas, and tariffs can disrupt or dislocate normal markets. 15. Chemical industry consumers may back-integrate for security of supply or for favorable economics, sometimes by joint ownership and often with experienced mining partners.

The size and depth of the ore bodies and their mineralogy dictate the types of products manufactured and the mining and processing methods which must be employed. The geology of the major deposits is well known and will be but briefly discussed The major emphasis will be placed upon the past history of the districts, the size and depth and configurations of the ore bodies, the ore mineralogy, and how all of these factors govern the types of mining and processing operations which may be employed in each of the districts.

For every million ounces/year of gold produced by mining and process operations, each 1 % loss to tails represents 10,000 oz/year of production sacrifice. Recovering this lost gold would generate aditional revenue of $3 million/year at $300/oz. Similarly, if the average recovered grade is say 0.15 oz/st, every $0.45/st reduction in operating costs will result in equivalent annual savings of $3 million. This paper describes the application of a technique to realize such cash flow benefits for milling operations.

Elastomeric liner products have been used for over two decades in a wide variety of uses including pond liners, hazardous waste barriers, dam face rehabilitation and mining applications. Asphalt blended with polymers is enjoying renewed interest in the engineering community because of its durability, high yield attributes, fewer CQA steps due to seamless installation, and ease of installation and repair. As in other lining technologies, advancements in polymer chemistry and improvements in installation techniques have had dramatic impact on the quality of fluid-applied asphalt (FAA) membranes. Membrane 6, man­ufactured by Deery Oil, Inc. for over 16 years is a hot-applied polymer modified asphalt membrane that can be applied to a variety of substrates in a reinforced configuration or installed directly on an asphalt surface. By blending thermoplastic polymers with asphalt, very favorable stress/strain characteristics can be achieved (Chambers, 1980). Typically the membrane will yield under rel­atively low stress and also exhibit high elongation capability. In service applications where puncture resistance is a concern, fluid applied asphalt materials have the flexibility and com­pressive strength under heavy loading that leach pad designers may find attractive. Additional security is achieved if long term service life is important as in the case of radioactive waste con­tainment. The Department of Energy selected Membrane 6 over seamed liners for a surface barrier that must isolate and contain radioactive waste for 1000 years. Asphalt has a long history of use as a water-stop material and it is believed that this natural construction material combined with SBS polymers will per-form for a millennium. (Freeman, 1994) The process of installing Membrane 6 varies according to job size and the type of surface to be protected. Lining applica­tions on compacted substrates require the membrane to be applied to a scrim cloth (fig 1). Some early pioneers in FAA technology neglected this step and therefore never achieved per­formance levels that satisfied regulatory guidelines. The scrim provides a cohesive surface that promotes membrane flow while achieving high impermeability (2Xl0 '11).

The Floridan aquifer, which underlies all of Florida, yields water with a sulfate content of less than 50 parts per million in the north-western part and throughout most of the center of the State. In the southern part of Florida and along the most of the east coast, the sulfate concentration generally exceeds 100 parts per million and is as much as 1,700 parts per million. The sulfate concentration tends to be higher in the deeper zones of the aquifer. This map shows the sulfate concentration in the upper part of the aquifer. Sulfate is found in almost all natural water. Sulfate in rainwater is dissolved from impurities and gases in the atmosphere. Rankama and Sahama (1955, p. 314) report that the average sulfate content of rainwater is two parts per million; however, concentrations have been as high as 283 parts per million. Much of the sulfate in rainwater comes from hydrogen sulfide gas which is generated in shallow water on the continental shelves. The combustion of bituminous coal used for heating and industrial purposes seems to be an important local source of sulfate.

The areas are identified where the techniques of operations research have been applied in the petroleum industry. Particular emphasis is given to the linear program models that have been used for solving management problems. Of the entire gamut of applications for linear programming, attention is focused on the models that represent underground reservoirs. Such models could be used to help schedule drilling rig operations and to schedule oil production. A framework is established for placing the model for underground reservoirs in the proper perspective along with the models which represent other facets of the oil business. One of the remarkable phenomena of this century is the rapid growth in the size and' complexity of human organizations. The mere size of modern business means that administrative decisions can affect vast quantities of capital and large number of people. Mistakes can be tremendously costly, and a single wrong decision can require years for rectification. Moreover, the pace of modern business is such that decisions are required more rapidly than ever before; the mere postponement of action can give a decided advantage to a competitor. It is not surprising that the increase in difficulty of decision making has been followed by efforts to put this activity on a more objective basis. The growing science of operations research, which relies heavily on the methods that have proved so successful in the physical sciences, is one aspect of these efforts.

Prior Authority experience and the rigorous risk-based approach to develop the preferred alignments played a large role in determining the outcomes along with schedule concerns and permitting and easement acquisition.

Trialkylphosphine sulphides, in contrast to their well known oxide analogues (1,2,3,4), have received comparatively little attention as metal extractants and previous studies have been biased toward analytical rather than commercial solvent extraction applications (5,6,7). The sulphides are soft Lewis bases and only from complexes readily with the limited number of metals in the periodic table which can be classified as soft acids (8) e.g. Ag+, Hg2+ and Pd2+. Consequently, these compounds tend to be more selective than the broad-spectrum, hard-base, phosphine oxide extractants such-as TOPO (trioctylphosphine oxide). The purpose of this paper is to describe a potential application of one phosphine sulphide, CYANEX® 471X extractant, in the selective recovery of silver from base metal sulphate solutions. CYANEX 471X is triisobutylphosphine sulphide (TIBPS).

This progress report covers the results of chemical, physical, and biological studies pertaining to the dump leaching process and discusses salient features and parameters that may be helpful in improving such operations.

Introduction Surface mining is a business, and the objective of most businesses is to make as much money as possible within certain responsible constraints. Businesses normally measure their potential to make money by estimating the discounted cash flow rate of return on new projects or the net present value for ongoing projects. These estimators of profitability are calculated using the following well-known equation: [ ] where i is the year, n is the total number of years, A, is the after tax net cash generation in year I, r is the discount rate and NPV is the net present value. In its simplest form, when the value of r makes the NPV equal to zero, the discounted cash flow-rate of return (DCF-ROR) is defined. The maximum economically recoverable reserve is identified at the point where the NPV or DCF-ROR is at a maximum. Depending on the measure used (DCF-ROR or discount rate) for calculating the NPV, the definition of recoverable reserve will be different for exactly the same deposit. Maximization of the measure of profitability and the economically recoverable reserves should not be separated from the mining method and sequence of exploiting the reserve. The surface mining methods may involve multiple-pass development of the resource, mining to the ultimate limit in one pass or a combination of the two methods with backfill. Multiple-pass development When planning a multiple-pass mining operation, it is important to determine the width of pit expansions that are appropriate for a specific situation. Production personnel typically want wide, open work areas where operations can be set up to run at peak efficiency. While this is understandable, the trade-off between highly efficient production operations and an overinvestment in stripping should be carefully weighed. As long as safety is not compromised, a few cents per bank cubic yard increase in operating cost due to lower productivity by working in more confined spaces may well be offset by a decrease in the overall short-term stripping requirements. A mini study on productivity and cost should help quantify this cost before deciding on minimum phasing requirements. The bigger challenge associated with establishing smaller work areas is securing operations and management buy-in to marginally lower productivity when reporting results. When cost reduction is the important management goal and everyone is focusing on unit costs, one sometimes loses sight of the goal of total cost management and, even more importantly, maximum profitability. The first pit should be defined by the first grouping of recoverable mineral that has the highest after-tax unit value and forms a feasible mining unit. The assumed mining of the first pit should be followed by the assumed mining of the second most profitable practical pit or pit expansion. If this process of grouping and sequencing is followed until the profitability approaches zero, the general sequence required to extract the maximum economically recoverable reserve is identified. The curve in Fig. 1 is constructed for a rate of production, R, and a quality management strategy, Q, by calculating the NPV for a series of sequences, with each sequence assuming that the operations are terminated on successively lower profit pits. These values are plotted to form the curve in Fig. 1. If the operation ceases on a pit that has too high of a profit, opportunity is lost, and the NPV is lower than the maximum. The NPV curve peaks and starts to decline before the zero-profit pit is assumed mined. This occurs because the money invested in advanced stripping would have made more money invested at the discount rate than by mining the next pit expansion. Therefore, the maximum economically recoverable reserve is defined by the pit limit corresponding to the maximum NPV. There may be an opportunity to refine the definition of the "ultimate pit" around the maximum-value point. The precise definition of the ultimate pit early in the mine life may or may not be important today, depending on how far off in the future these limits will be reached. At this point in time, approximately 800 M tonnes (880 M tons) of coal are mined each year in the United States. Forty percent of this coal or approximately 320 M tonnes (350 M tons) is taken from underground coal mines, and from this subtotal 16% or 50 M tonnes (55 M tons) is from longwall panels (1). If, for the sake of argument, an aver- age extraction thickness of 1.5 m (5 ft), an aver- age extraction ratio of 50 percent and an in situ density of 1360 kg/ms (85 lb/ft3) for this coal are assumed, then the 320 M tonnes (350 M tons) of underground coal translates to over 310 km2 (76,000 acres) that is undermined each year. Con- sidering that the total U.S. production of under- ground longwall coal to date is approximately 345 M tonnes (380 M tons), then a total of approximately 165 km2 (41,000 acres) (considering 100% extraction) has been directly undermined by longwall coal production in the United States. If the angle-of- draw is considered, the total area affected by longwall subsidence in the United States is probably twice the above value or 330 km2 (82,000 acres) . In the future, a number of other miscellaneous factors seem likely to multiply the number of potentially damaging situations that occur due to longwall coal mining. First, the overall production of coal in the United States is expected to gradually increase. This factor is further com- pounded by both the fact that the percentage of the overall production due to underground mining is bound to increase, since the vast majority of U.S. reserves (68%) are only recoverable by underground methods, and the fact that the percentage of the underground production of coal that is recovered by longwall mining is drastically increasing (1). Finally, as the nicest underground reserves are depleted, the remaining reserves will tend to be deeper, which increases the affected surface area, and under denser population concentrations, which increases the likelihood and severity of possible damages. Overall, considering the number of factor which are biased towards increasing the amount of undermined acreage, it appears that there must certainly be a corresponding increase in the number of possible damaging situations due to longwall-induced, ground subsidence.

This paper is intended to provide information for one to be able to determine the slurry system head curve for pump applications. The slurry characteristics are the basis for what the size, material of construction, and critical carrying velocity of the pipe will be. The system head curve is adjusted by use of the pipe friction coefficient factor and slurry derate factors. An example using multi-staging of slurry pump curves is presented to compare the wear life relationship of pump parts for a tailing pipeline system head curve.

This presentation will compare actual work site results for the loading and transport of shot rock for two major tunneling projects in North America. "SCARMAR" (the Canadian subsidiary of S & M Construction) is operating a rail bound Hagglund continuous gathering arm loader in combination with a Hagglund nine car shuttletrain system at the West End of Table Mountain on the B.C. Railway project near Tumbler Ridge, Canada. Al Johnson Construction is operating a Hagglund rubber tired continuous gathering arm loader in combination with haul trucks at the Rocky Mountain Pump Storage Project near Rome, GA. This paper will compare: 1) tunnel and ground conditions, 2) the total work cycle as it relates to mucking and haulage 3) efficiencies and related problems with the two systems 4) mucking and haulage rates 5) operating costs, and 6) recommendations for future large tunnel excavations. Bolting the mine roof is one of the noisiest underground mining operations. The main contribution to the high noise is the drilling of the roof bolt holes, especially in hard rock. A previous research shows that the specific energy consumed in drilling the bolt holes is inversely proportional to the bite depth (i.e., penetration per drill revolution). Less specific energy at a reasonably high bite depth means less energy is wasted in the drilling process to produce heat, bit wear and noise. Therefore, control of drilling operation to achieve a higher bite depth can provide an opportunity to reduce drilling noise from its sources as a proactive noise control approach. In order to explore the feasibility and to develop the proactive technology for reducing drilling noise, drilling tests have been conducted in laboratory settings. The preliminary results show significant reduction in noise dose can be achieved by drilling in medium hard rock at a reasonably high bite depth. This paper presents the findings from the laboratory experimental studies conducted so far.

This paper presents the results of an application of the PSU/USBM Open Pit Materials Handling Simulator (1) to a large stripping mine in the Southwestern Coalfield. The specific objective of the study was to demonstrate the application of the simulator to a complex multi-pit operation, with emphasis on simulating short term and long term production plans recommended for the mine by Theodore Barry Associates (2). Mine Description The mine is located in the Southwestern Coalfield, which encompasses parts of the states of Utah, Arizona and New Mexico. The lease area presently covers 121500 x 103 m2 (30000 acres) in a strip 37.007 x 103 m (23 miles) from north to south and up to 1609 m (1 mile) in width, located at an elevation above 1525 m (5000 ft). Three gently dipping coal seams are present, of which the upper seam (#3) averages 0-5.5 m (0-18 ft); the intermediate seam (#2) averages 0-1.2 m (0-4 ft); and the lower seam (#1) averages 0-2.4 m (0-8 ft). Overburden is mixed sand, gravel, calcareous clay, caliche and sandstone, with calcareous shale and sandstone burden between seams. Where the seams are covered by less than 6.1 m (20 ft) of overburden, they are generally weathered and oxidized and are not extracted. Stripping ratios have ranged from 3.5 to 6.0 with an average of 5.4. All future plans were based on a stripping ratio of 5.3.

Peng The highlights of this paper are: The shield supports with lemniscate links will exert a tangential force on the roof strata, causing unnecessary and harmful roof movements, thus damaging the roof structure. The principal source of the tangential force is the horizontal movement of the point O, the pivotal joint between the canopy and the caving shield. When the support height is changed during setting, the point O will move along a curve upward and rearward toward the gob. As a result, it produces a vertical movement, causing the roof to move up a distance of t d, and a horizontal movement toward the gob, creating vertical fractures in the roof. The major purpose for employing the lemniscate- link system is to protect the hydraulic legs against the action of the bending moments induced by the tangential force that causes deformation or destruction of the legs. Based on these two points, the author suggested that, in order to eliminate the harmful effects of the lemniscate-link system and strengthen its advantageous features, a shield support with a new design of that mechanism has been developed. With the new design, the conventional rigid lemniscate links are replaced by hydraulic rams. When the pressure inside the rams reaches a certain level, the ram will yield.
