In many underground mines the excavated ore is produced during the blasting process. Drilling machines that are used to drill the blastholes, where later the explosives will be mounted, are crucial for this task. In order to optimize the currently used techniques, great emphasis is placed on increasing the efficiency and safety of blasthole drilling operations. The natural consequence is the development of monitoring systems and algorithms for processing operational and historical data. In this article, we present the result of the analysis of drilling data carried out as part of the IlluMINEation project. The paper proposes an algorithm for work cycle detection for drilling machines, together with the estimation of general operating parameters and diagnosing the drilling process on the basis of long-term data. Based on the available data, selected components of the drilling cycles have been indicated. Several approaches based on the parameters of the defined cycles are proposed. These approaches can be used in the future to create a full-fledged system for examining the effectiveness and safety of mining drilling rigs.

A good understanding of the hardness of ore being handled and processed in a mining operation can significantly improve operational efficiencies by providing valuable data to support decision-making through the mining value chain (drilling, blasting, comminution). This study presents the results from the application of Machine Learning (ML) to predict rock hardness using various geophysical and geochemical features. Core samples from a mine site were logged using a multi-sensor core logging system. Measurements including ultrasonic p-wave and s-wave velocity, elemental concentration via portable XRF, and Leeb Hardness, were measured every 2 cm along the length of the core. The ML model was set up to predict the Leeb Hardness using the elemental concentrations and ultrasonic velocities as predictors. The Leeb Hardness values were grouped into three bins and used as a classification target for the ML models. Various ML models, including linear regression, support vector machines, decision tree, XGBoost, Random Forest, K-Nearest Neighbors, and Naïve Bayes were tested. The model performance demonstrated that the Random Forest and XGBoost models produced the highest accuracy of 74-91%. Random forest and XGBoost were then selected to perform regression models to estimate a Leeb hardness value rather than a hardness class. These models were able to estimate the Leeb hardness value by 4.57-4.87 % error.

In situ recovery (ISR) of uranium alters the baseline groundwater geochemistry in order to mobilize and complex uranium to extract and concentrate it. ISR wellfield restoration is often challenging, and primarily relies on groundwater sweep, reinjection of treated permeate, and/or injection of reductants. Greater focus should be placed on injection-based approaches (using existing infrastructure) based on established engineering concepts used for in situ remediation of groundwater plumes. Such injection-based approaches could shorten restoration timeframes consequently reducing long-term operational costs. This paper addresses various types of injection-based approaches to wellfield restoration based on in-situ remediation success with other constituents that require similar treatment. This paper describes necessary design practices for injecting reactive chemicals (e.g., reductants or biostimulants), operations and maintenance (O&M) strategies to prevent fouling of the chemical delivery system and well network, and natural constraints to restoration. Best practices for successful biostimulation strategies that minimize residual uranium, radium, oxoanions, and other trace elements are as described. Advantages of such injection-based approaches could include significant reductions in restoration times, and consequently, lower restoration costs.

This paper presents an experimental method to determine the degree of gangue entrainment in mechanical flotation cells and proposes new and inexpensive methods to lessen it. The applicability of froth washing and vibration was studied in laboratory, pilot plant, and plant scales. The effect of wash water on metallurgical performance was tested with various streams from the Falconbridge Strathcona mill at laboratory, pilot, and plant scales, with the 2nd cleaner at the Eastmaque Kirkland Lake mill, and with the 2nd and 3rd zinc and 3rd and 4th copper cleaners at Les Mines Selbaie mill. It was found that gangue recovery was closely related to water recovery in all systems. Wash water at an optimum superficial rate from 0.03 to 0.07 cm/s reduced entrainment by anywhere from 30X to 70X. Wash water can be further assisted by mechanical and ultrasonic vibration of the froth. A further rejection of 10 to 20X becomes possible. As a result of this work, a number of plants in Canada and in the United States have evaluated and/or are now using froth washing.

The Tennessee Valley Authority began employing geophysical well logging for foundation investigations in October 1973. Since that time more than 3,000 holes have been evaluated for engineering purposes. The Tennessee Valley Authority has not actively used geo-physical well logging for exploration of construction materials, but we feel that much of the information derived from geophysical logs for foundation exploration is applicable to the construction materials industry. This paper will then discuss geophysical logging as applied to foundation engineering and, by implication, the feasibility of use in construction materials exploration. The use of geophysical logging and percussion drilling instead of coring has greatly expanded TVA's data acquisition capabilities and has also resulted in substantial savings in time and money. Economical boreholes are obtained through the use of large percussion track drills (Figure 1). This equipment is capable of drilling through the overburden, setting steel casing on the top of rock, and drilling the rock beneath the casing. Holes as deep as 400 feet (121.9 m) have been drilled by this method.

"Iron as an impurity in pyrophyllite ore affects pottery, ceramics and tile quality. We carried out the characterization of a pyrophyllite ore sample using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and wet chemical analysis. The study revealed the presence of 2.15% iron oxide (Fe2O3 ) along with silica and alumina as the major components, which constituted around 90% of the total sample. We carried out the removal of iron from the pyrophyllite using magnetic separation and acid leaching and found that wet high-intensity magnetic separation (WHIMS) could remove 28% of iron values while oxalic acid leaching could remove up to 99.3%. The leaching kinetics of iron removal and the effects of pulp density, acid concentration, leaching time and temperature were also investigated. The optimum conditions for leaching were found to be leaching time of 60 minutes, temperature of 90°C, pulp density of 5%, oxalic acid concentration of 0.3 M, and particle size below 100 microns. Iron dissolution from the pyrophyllite sample can be best described by the diffusion of ions through the product layer of constant-size spherical particles. The breakdown of the pyrophyllite structure was evident from the FTIR and TGA studies. The activation energy of the leaching process over the temperature range was calculated to be 43.47 kJ/mol. IntroductionPyrophyllite is a naturally occurring phyllosilicate mineral composed of aluminum silicate hydroxide [Al2Si4O10(OH)2] as the major component and often associated with other minerals such as kaolinite, mica, quartz, rutile and epidote. It occurs in fine-grained sericite schist that is quarried as pyrophyllite (Pandit et al., 2008). In India, pyrophyllite occurs mainly in Madhya Pradesh state, Uttar Pradesh state and the Keonjhar district of Odisha state (Harpavat, 1995). Pure pyrophyllite is a highly desirable material for various applications due to its unique properties. It exhibits high refractive behavior, low thermalelectrical conductivity, low expansion coefficient, low hot-load deformation, low bulk density and high corrosion resistance to molten metal and basic slag (Rieger, 1997). It is used in the ceramics, refractory, foundry, electrical-insulation, sanitary-ware, glassmaking, pesticide and rubber fields. Compared with clay, it has lower thermal conductivity and coefficient of expansion, making it more suitable for refractory applications (Harben, 2002; The Minerals Yearbook, 2011)."

"Colorado School of MinesResearchers at Colorado School of Mines (CSM) have developed computational fluid dynamic (CFD) models to study gas distributions and explosion and fire hazards in longwall gobs. In underground coal mines, methane continuously emitted from surrounding strata mixes with air from active mine workings and may form explosive gas zones (EGZs). Some western United States coal mines are also prone to spontaneous combustion (spon com). Insight into oxygen concentrations within the gob is crucial for assessing spon com hazards and mitigation strategies. Nitrogen injection used in conjunction with progressive gob sealing can reduce EGZs and spon com hazards by forming a dynamic seal that separates the methane in the gob from the air that ingresses from the face. This paper describes CFD modeling simulations studying the formation of such dynamic seals by optimizing the nitrogen injection locations. The impact of nitrogen on oxygen ingress and formation of EGZs is discussed. Optimum nitrogen injection quantities and injection locations were determined. Dynamic seal formation is most effective if the headgate nitrogen injection locations are split between the first crosscut inby the face and a second location about 300 m (1,000 ft) further inby. INTRODUCTION Underground longwall coal mine ventilation systems are designed to dilute hazardous gases and to provide breathable air to miners working in the area. Methane gas is liberated as the mining process extracts the coal and disturbs the surrounding strata. Methane mixes with the ventilation air and often produces explosive gas zones (EGZs) within longwall gobs (Brune 2013). Past CFD modeling research of underground coal mine ventilation systems has shown the effects of face air quantity on EGZs (Worrall 2012) and nitrogen injection to control spon com (Balusu et al. 2005; Ren et al. 2012; Ren et al. 2011; Smith and Yuan, 2008; Yuan and Smith, 2014). Other modeling approaches include network ventilation models of oxygen ingress (Dziurzynski and Wasilewski, 2012), and coupled Linear Network CFD algorithms (Wedding 2014). In a project sponsored by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), CSM researchers are using Fluent®, a CFD software package by ANSYS, Inc., to model gas compositions and flows in underground longwall gobs. Figure 1 shows a progressively sealed gob with a U-type ventilation system in a three entry development. As the longwall advances, seals are constructed along the headgate in the crosscuts between the center entry and the gob. Additional gob isolation seals are built to block off the headgate entries inby the face. Nitrogen is injected through the seals in the first two crosscuts on the headgate side and at the first crosscut inby the face on the tailgate side, as shown in Figure 1."

A method and equipment have been developed Tor measuring the impact strength of grains of brittle materials. It is shown that brittle materials develop a characteristic particle size distribution when fractured by impact. A simple mathematical model has been found to describe this distribution, and one of the parameters of the model has been designated the r value. The r value is directly proportional .to impact energy and, for fixed impact energy, it becomes a useful criterion of grain strength. Data are presented on the variation of the r value as a function of sample history, initial size, energy input and number of impacts, The results are interpreted in terms of the flaw theory of brittle fracture.

"The ultimate objectives of the post-tensioned strands are to connect the precast segments into a ring and provide pre-stress in the tunnel circumference. The method involves inserting the strand through the preliminary embedded duct in the precast concrete segments and then tensioning the strand by jack and fastening it. The post-tensioned strand eliminates the necessity of bolt connections between the segments and may reduce the labor cost and increase speed of lining construction. Pre-stressing of the segmental lining reduces the steel reinforcement or fiber volume in precast segments and/or thickness of the precast segments which would result in reducing the manufacturing cost of them. Pre-stressing would reduce cracking and increase water tightness, and would provide smooth intrados due to eliminated bolt joints and pockets in the tunnel lining. Pre-stressing would increase resistance to internal pressures as well. Further, this system could work very well structurally in tunnels with squeezing rock or tunnels with high seismic loadings. INTRODUCTION OF THE METHODPost-tensioning is commonly used in the construction of bridges, large buildings, nuclear power stations, and water tanks but its utilization in tunnels is still in its infancy.The precast pre-stressed concrete segmental lining can be used for shield tunnels. Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) performed laboratory testing to examine and improve airborne dust capture and methane removal performance of flooded-bed scrubbers on continuous mining machines using a blowing face ventilation configuration to reduce respirable dust exposure to shuttle car operators. Several testing conditions were examined to minimize shuttle car operator dust exposure without adversely affecting continuous miner performance and production. Curtain-to-face setback distance of 9.1 m versus 15.2 m (30 ft versus 50 ft), face ventilation airflow of 226.5 m3/min versus 339.8 m3/min (8,000 ft3/min versus 12,000 ft3/min), and the use of side-body-mounted blocking sprays (on versus off) were the three primary parameters compared. Scrubber airflow was set and maintained at 198.2 m3/min (7,000 ft3/min) throughout testing. An examination of slab cuts versus box cuts and the location of the shuttle car (present behind the continuous miner versus not present in the entry) was also performed to demonstrate the effects of these constantly changing scenarios on scrubber performance. Results show that the best blowing face ventilation setup for minimizing shuttle car operator dust exposure for the tested parameters uses a 15.2-m (50-ft) curtain-to-face setback with 339.8 m3/min (12,000 ft3/min) face ventilation while operating the side-body-mounted blocking sprays. INTRODUCTION Coal mine worker overexposure to respirable coal dust continues to be a problem in U.S. underground coal mining operations, potentially leading to coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (black lung). The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requires that respirable dust exposure to coal mine workers does not exceed a 1.5 mg/m3 average over the actual working shift (79 Fed. Reg. 24814 (2014)). Although using a blowing face ventilation configuration on continuous miner (CM) sections is beneficial for removing methane emissions from the mining face, it can be detrimental for dust control for shuttle car (or ram car) operators and any other workers on the return ventilation side of the CM when compared to exhausting ventilation. Even with machine-mounted scrubbers on CMs, shuttle car operators still have some of the higher dust exposures with blowing face ventilation systems (NIOSH 2011, Beck et al. 2015). Although scrubber discharge air is not completely clean, dust being blown around the scrubber inlet and therefore not being captured by the scrubber can further increase these dust exposures (Goodman 2000). Dust control problems are also caused by inadequate face ventilation quantities causing scrubber face airflow recirculation issues (Schultz et al. 2010). In order to minimize respirable dust exposures on blowing face ventilation sections, ventilation, water spray, and scrubber parameters were experimentally examined to improve operating ranges for both dust and gas control. Several blowing face ventilation factors were examined with respect to CM spray systems and scrubber operation. Curtain-to-face setback distance and side-body-mounted blocking sprays were previously examined in the laboratory for dust control on a full-scale CM model using a scrubber on a blowing face ventilation system (Goodman 2000). The blocking sprays produced larger dust reductions at the CM’s rear corners and return for a 6.1-m (20-ft) curtain setback distance as compared to a 12.2-m (40-ft) curtain setback distance with equal face and scrubber airflows of 169.9 m3/min (6,000 ft3/min). Because face ventilation airflow quantities, shuttle car operator locations, and tracer gas concentration gradients were not previously examined during these experiments, additional research was required to determine improved operating parameters for blowing face ventilation systems.

This paper describes some of the unique features in mining, milling and water treatment operation at Grey Eagle. In addition, major start-up problems in the mill and water treatment plant are discussed along with measures taken to correct these problems.

Respirable rock dust poses serious long-term health effects to workers in mining and tunneling underground hard rock environments. When inhaled, respirable silica particles commonly found in quartz and other minerals will scar sensitive lung tissue and cause irreversible lung diseases. Characteristics such as concentration, type of mineral, particle size, and particle shape inhaled can harm workers to various extents. Therefore, this study characterizes rock dust particles less than 100µm in aerodynamic diameter that are released from cutting hard rock in the underground mining environment. In this study, laboratory full scale cutting tests on samples of potash rock were performed with radial picks to generate dust. Three stages of pick wear were tested: new, moderately worn, and severely worn. Comparisons between different stages of pick wear to dust concentration, size distribution, and particle shape characteristics are drawn from this study to start determining the scenarios when the released airborne dusts become potentially most hazardous for workers. Although further testing needs to be conducted to make viable conclusions, the moderately worn pick, or the pick with the most blunt tip, in these experiments are potentially the most dangerous. The blunt pick tip released the highest concentration of dust and generated particle shapes with the highest aspect ratio compared to the other two picks. The preliminary results of this study allow for the further development of optimum bit management and maintenance systems to control the exposure of respirable dust to mine workers.

Alkyl hydroxamates are well known collectors for oxide copper minerals as evidenced by the large amount of published literature. Our studies on a wide variety of copper ores from around the world have shown that alkyl hydroxamates will recover most of the "floatable" oxide copper minerals from an ore. They are available commercially, and they offer many advantages over alternative technologies for oxide copper recovery. In spite of this, the full potential of hydroxamates has not been exploited in the industry. The objective of this paper is to provide relevant practical aspects and guidelines to facilitate successful application of hydroxamates in operating plants. A critical analysis of the available information and data, based on several case studies, notation testing, and microscopic analysis indicates that alkyl hydroxamates can effectively recover well-defined oxide minerals of copper, but not copper occurrences such as Cu-bearing goethite (often misidentified as cuprite) which report as Acid Soluble copper in chemical assays. Prior to any notation testing with hydroxamates, it is necessary to assess the various modes of occurrence of Acid Soluble copper using microscopic and microprobe analysis.

Surface mining of coal in the South developed into a major industry during the 1960's. The economic significance of the industry is much greater than is readily apparent when one considers only the value of the coal mined. The abun-dant supply of relatively inexpensive steam coal for electric power generation that has been derived from the surface mines has provided the foundation for the industrial expansion that has occurred throughout the South. The region, in gen-eral, has enjoyed the benefits of plentiful low cost electric power. However, re-cent political decisions, at all levels of government, threaten to destroy or severely curtail the surface mining of coal and eliminate the economic advantages once enjoyed by the region. These political decisions are rapidly changing the basic rules of operation and fundamental economics of surface coal mining. Recent changes, resulting from the enactment of environmental and health and safety laws and various bureaucratic rules and regulations, have had a three-fold effect: 1) Greatly increased operating cost, 2) increased lead times for mine development, 3) limited potential reserve base for future mining. Also current legislative proposals are casting a shadow of uncertainty over the future of all coal mining operations that has created serious delays and in-creased cost for the expansion of the coal industry necessary to meet our project independence goals. Technology Surface mining is the safest and most economical way to produce raw materials from the earth's crust. It also affords a more healthier working environment for the individual miner. A spatial modeling technique based on the Bayesian neural network (BNN) is proposed. Incorporation of the Bayesian method for posterior probability of the output parameter helps calculate the uncertainty associated with the estimate. Parameters of the BNN model were selected using a grid search algorithm. The expected value and the variance of block support were calculated by Markov chain Monte Carlo sampling of the posterior distribution at discretized points within the block. The BNN model was validated by applying it to the Walker Lake data set and comparing the results with ordinary kriging results. The comparison revealed that the proposed BNN method performs marginally better than ordinary kriging. The variance map is less smooth than with ordinary kriging, and the proportional effect is less in the BNN-based model than in the ordinary kriging model. The developed BNN model was applied to the Coho block of a placer gold deposit in Nome, AK. Results reveal that the BNN model is globally biased for the Coho block and underestimates the sample mean. The grade volume curve was developed by calculating the block mean and block variance after discretizing the block into a number of points and applying the BNN model to each discretized point.

The definition of high sulfur coal varies from plant to plant and is subject to changes over time as the environmental regulations change. In plants constructed after September 1978 hardly any domestic coal can currently be burned without the use of Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) because a 70 percent reduction in potential S02 emission is mandatory even when the potential emission is less than 0.6 lbs. S02/106 Btu heat input. On the other hand older power plants may in many cases be legally emitting up to 6 lbs. S02/106 Btu or more under some State Implementation Plans (SIP). The Clean Air Act requires, however, that in the long run all stationary sources of S02 pollution must abide by the ceiling of 1.2 lbs S02/10 Btu heat input.. Coals with a potential to exceed this limit must, therefore, be considered as high sulfur coals. Such a definition would be unrealistic because many SIP's aim at an emission level of 1.8 to 2.0 lbs. SO2/106 Btu for existing plants and a stricter limit does not appear to be enforceable in the next 5 to 10 years. As a result, coals with an emission potential of greater than 2.0 lbs of S02 per 10 Btu heat input are considered high sulfur coals for the purpose of this investigation. Based on this definition and the 1984 actual consumption of coals by U.S. electric utilities (table 1) only 7 out of the 24 coal producing states could be categorized as low sulfur states. The actual S02 pollution, however, depends on total tonnage of a type of coal as well as the sulfur content of the coal. Table 1 also indicates that only 6 states--Kentucky, Illinois, West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Indiana-account for nearly 77 percent of S02 pollution potential in the United States. These 6 states have therefore been chosen for this investigation.

During the year of 1972 ASARCO's Silver Bell embarked upon a project that would test a modified grinding circuit using direct digital compute against the performance of its other five grinding lines, implementation and subsequent outcome of that project has been previously reported in a paper by Pitts, et al. The main purpose of the present paper will be to describe major problems incurred during the implementation of this control strategy on the remaining five primary grinding lines and their solutions. Also included will be a discussion of changes made in operating philosophy and methods used since that report was written. Description The Silver Bell concentrator is a 10,436 tonne/day copper sulfide plant supplied by ore from two separate open pits approximately 4 km. apart. As well as receiving ore from these two main pits, ore is received from several exten¬sions of both pits. The ore bodies are variable in rock type and the extensions have increased this variability. Grinding is carried out by six primary, single-stage, 3.20M x 3.66M Allis Chalmers grate discharge ball mills in closed circuit with four Krebs D20B cyclones (Fig. 1). Each of these grinding circuits is controlled by four independent but interactive control elements. These control elements are the fresh ore feed, the water added to the feed end of the mill, the water added to the ball mill discharge sump, and the cyclone feed pump speed. At the present time, instrumentation for measuring primary process variables consists of Merrick weightometers for fresh ore feed, orifice plates coupled with differential pressure transmitters (dp's) for incoming water measurements, back-pressure diaphragm coupled with a dp for estimating ball mill discharge sump level, a magnetic flowmeter for determining cyclone feed velocity and a nuclear density gauge for measuring cyclone feed density. All measuring instruments develop electrical signals that are measured as 2-10 V DC "inputs o the computer interface.

Preliminary geophysical surveys for nickel deposits are usually carried out by airborne magnetometer and surface electrical methods. Once an anomaly is discovered by these techniques, one must resort to chemistry to identify nickel and determine its concentration. Consequently, a method to determine nickel quickly and quantitatively at the exploration site could help guide detailed sampling and provide analytical data that might otherwise be delayed at distant laboratories. In addition, borehole probes capable of indicating nickel in the rock adjacent to the hole, should prove attractive to the exploration geologist. With these needs in mind, preliminary investigations have been made to demonstrate an in situ analytical technique which appears feasible for nickel exploration. The method depends on the very high energy gamma rays emitted when nickel absorbs a thermal or low energy neutron. These neutron capture gamma rays should be distinguished from the lower energy gamma rays emitted during decay of radioactive nuclides as in conventional activation analysis.

A resource of low grade good quality diamonds has been discovered through the Diamond Company NL-Moonstone Diamond Corp. Joint Venture. A limited bulk sample diamond test of two large kimberlite pipes on the Kelsey Lake Property, Colorado, has been completed. These kimberlite pipes have petrological and mineralogical indications of the presence of diamond. Small diamonds were recovered from surface samples. Drilling and trenching revealed both pipes were complexes of diatreme facies kimberlite. One pipe contains crater facies kimberlite as well. This is the first reported occurrence of crater facies kimberlite in the Province. Approximately 1000 tonnes of kimberlite rock was excavated and processed through a scrubber -HMS -Sortex -Grease Plant. Significant diamonds were recovered. The diamonds were generally of good color and clarity, with many being in the gem and near gem categories. Grades are considered low however. Additionally, a small potential resource of alluvial diamonds is present.
