Process development is one of the principal tasks required in the course of turning an exploration discovery into a mine. Exploration geologists should have an understanding of the more important metallurgical processes and the test work required for each process. The paper discusses the important metallurgical processes, the test work and sample requirements for each, and the costs and time requirements to accomplish the testing. The limitations of reverse circulation drill samples for metallurgical testing are discussed. The level of process definition required to support engineering studies: scoping, pre-feasibility and feasibility studies are also described.

US coal production increased 3% to a record 832 Mt (917 million st) in 1987, according to preliminary Energy Information Administration (EIA) data. Most of the increase was due to the unusually warm summer and the increased coal-fired electricity demand for air conditioning. Drought conditions in the Northwest lowered hydroelectric generation, contributing to the higher use of coal by electric utilities. However, excess production capacity and increased competition from natural gas added further downward pressure on delivered coal prices, continuing the declining price trend of the last several years. Coal production by region Appalachian coal production reached 402 Mt (443 million st) in 1987. This is about 3% more than in 1986 and just short of its 1984 peak. Virginia produced 7% more than its 1986 level, due to increased coal-based electricity demand. Smaller percentage increases were attained in eastern Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Ohio and Alabama were the only major coal-producing states in Appalachia that produced less coal in 1987 than in the previous year. In the Interior region, 1987 coal production reached a record 182 Mt (201 million st), about 2% above 1986. Illinois is the largest coal-producing state in that region. Production there fell about 3.7%, primarily because of lowered demand at electric utility plants in Alabama and Tennessee. However, this was more than offset by production increases in western Kentucky, Texas, and Indiana. After falling slightly in 1986, coal production in the West resumed its upward trend to a record 248 Mt (273 million st). Wyoming is that region's dominant coal producer. It mined 7% more coal than in 1986. Wyoming's increase offset the 11% decline in New Mexico production and smaller declines in other Western states. Coal consumption and prices Domestic coal consumption reached a record 759 Mt (837 million st) in 1987. Most of the increase resulted from the unusually warm summer that led to higher than normal peak demands for electricity in the third quarter. Electric utility coal consumption was also boosted by the below-normal hydroelectric generation that resulted from low water levels in the Northwest. These factors more than offset the effects of increased nuclear power generation and competition from natural gas. As a result, coal provided 56.9% of electric utility generation in 1987, compared with 55.7% in 1986. Electric utilities consumed a record 651 Mt (718 million st) of coal. While electric utility coal consumption increased, the average cost of coal to utilities was down, from $1.58 per million Btu in 1986 to $1.52 in 1987. The average price of coal delivered to utilities in 1987 was $35.09/t ($31.84 per st), the lowest since 1981. Coal prices were held down by a glut of coal supplies and by a decline in the average price of natural gas to electric utilities. Coal consumption at coke plants in 1987 was 2.6% above the 1986's 32.5 Mt (36 million st). This increase reflects steel's recent resurgence. Coking coal demand, though, was reduced by the increased use of continuous casting and electric furnace technologies. The average price of coal delivered to coke plants fell from $56.02 to $51.35/t ($50.83 to $46.59 per st). Coal consumption in the industries other than coke plants amounted to 68.2 Mt (75.2 million st) in 1987, slightly less than in 1986. Coal lost part of its market share to natural gas, which was priced favorably relative to coal. The average price of coal delivered to manufacturing plants was at its lowest level of the current decade. It fell from $39.50/t in 1986 to $37.27/t ($35.84 to $33.81 per st). Residential and commercial coal consumption fell to 6.2 Mt (6.9 million st) that is 9.8% below 1986 and the lowest since 1980. This decline is also attributed to the relatively low price of natural gas in 1987. Coal stocks Coal consumers held 169 Mt (186 million st) of coal stocks at the end of 1987, 5.9% above the 1986 year-end level. Most of this increase was due to stockpiling by electric utilities in anticipation of a possible strike by the United Mine Workers of America early in 1988. Stocks at electric utilities increased to an estimated 154 Mt (171 million st) at the end of 1987, 5.6% higher than the previous year. This was much lower than 1984's stock buildup. Coke plants increased their coal stocks by 30% in 1987 to 3.5 Mt (3.9 million st), rebounding from the unusually low inventories of 1985 and 1986. ABSTRACT Recent advances in computing, rendering, and display technologies have generated increased accessibility for virtual reality (VR). VR allows the creation of dynamic, high-fidelity environments to simulate dangerous situations, test conditions, and visualize concepts. Consequently, numerous products have been developed, but many of these are limited in scope. Therefore, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health researchers developed a VR framework, called VR Mine, to rapidly create an underground mine for human data collection, simulation, visualization, and training. This paper describes the features of VR Mine using self-escape and proximity detection as case studies. Features include mine generation, simulated networks, proximity detection systems, and the integration and visualization of real-time ventilation models. INTRODUCTION There are many definitions of virtual reality (VR) that include various levels of immersion and features [1]. Some definitions refer to specific technologies [2], while others are limited to visualization [3]. For this paper, a more general definition of VR will be adopted. VR is defined as the collection of hardware and software that interactively engages users and stimulates their senses within a synthetic or virtual environment. From a hardware standpoint, this can include anything from a phone to a head-mounted display (HMD) to a large-scale theater as well as speakers, microphones, haptic sensors, and interaction devices. The software used to create virtual environments (VEs) generally includes a game engine, custom software components and libraries, and two-dimensional and three-dimensional graphical assets. Recent hardware and software advances have increased the fidelity and availability of VR. New and improved technologies including HMDs and high-resolution monitors and projectors can display sharper, more detailed visualizations. For example, in the past five years between the release of the Oculus Rift DK1 (2013) and the HTC Vive Pro (2018), there was a three-fold increase in resolution along with a 50% increase in the refresh rate. Furthermore, despite early claims that low-cost VR technology was readily available [4], computational power has not been sufficient to handle the large amount of data generated by these systems [5]. In the past five years, however, rendering speeds have more than doubled and memory has more than tripled [6], allowing these visualizations to be incorporated into higher-complexity and -fidelity VEs that more closely mirror the real world. Similarly, software capabilities have also significantly improved through game engine advancements and feature development. In the past several years, game engines have added and improved features such as physics, lighting, platform support (e.g. Android), and asset development integration. Some of the current leading commercial game engines are Amazon Lumberyard, CryEngine, Unreal, and Unity, but this can quickly change as is evident in the literature [7, 8].

If there is a single key to managing a mineral extraction company, it is the control of productivity. American labor costs, in general, tend to be in the range of 10%-15% of total costs. American coal mining labor costs, however, exhibit ranges of 30%-60% of total costs. Is it any wonder that the industry finds itself at a competitive disadvantage? When labor costs take as much as sixty cents of every dollar of revenue, there is little room for profitability. The American coal mining industry must set as a long range goal the reduction of labor costs to the 10%-15% range of total costs in order to be competitive.

The Filblast Cyanidation Process incorporates the advantages of intense high shear mixing, high dissolved oxygen concentra­tion and high pressure to achieve extremely rapid gold dissolu­tion rates. This is made possible without suffering from high energy or wear rates by the unique design of the Filblast gas shear reactor. The reactor is a rugged and compact in-line device which can be constructed from a variety of wear and chemical resistant materials. High temperature tolerance is also possible so that the device can be incorporated into a pressure leach circuit with significant capital cost savings because of the high capacity to volume ratio that is an inherent feature of the device. For cyanidation applications the outer casing is protected by a polyurethane coating and the internal parts are of wear resistant polymer. The largest unit built to date has overall dimensions of 1200 mm length by 300 mm diameter and has a capacity of about 150 dry tonnes per hour at 40-45 % solids. Service life at this throughput is at least three months. Six mines are currently employing the Filblast Process and another six are conducting plant trials. The ore types range from highly reactive, almost impossible to treat, pyrrhotite/ arsenopy­rite to deeply weathered clay ore which forms a highly viscous pulp. It has been found that the effect of shear thinning has resulted in improved leaching and adsorption kinetics resulting in higher carbon loading and reduced soluble gold loss. Total tonnage treated is approximately eight million tonnes per annum. This paper presents the operating benefits and cost savings which have been achieved in four plants, two treating oxide/ sulphide ore blends and two treating highly reactive sulphide ore and concentrate. Filblast leasing and maintenance charges and pump operating costs are about ten percent of the benefits. A conceptual cyanidation circuit based on the Filblast Cyanidation Process is also discussed. The Filblast System is an in-line pressure leach aerator/ reactor which generates very high shear and greatly enhances mass transfer rate by generating extremely small gas particles where oxygen gas is required for oxidation reactions and/or utilising the high shear characteristics to minimise the diffusion boundary layer. Both of these rate limiting factors effect the rate mechanism for gold cyanidation. Initially two multi-stage Filblast aerator cartridges formed a leach train but now the trend is to install a single submersible cartridge of equivalent perfor­mance. This design simplifies installation and minimises change-out times. However the in-line concept can be employed where high pressure leaching or pressure oxidation is required. The reactor is submerged in the leach tank so that the mass of gas micro-bubbles contained in the discharging slurry is entrained in the agitator vortex and is thoroughly dispersed throughout the tank. A diagrammatic representation of a leaching circuit incorpo­rating the Filblast Reactor is shown in Figure 1. The recirculation pump takes new feed directly from the cyclone overflow trash screen either under gravity or pump fed and recirculates the balance to maintain 250 - 270 m3/h total slurry flow. All of the leach feed slurry gets at least one pass through the Filblast thereby eliminating short-circuiting. Typically a 6/4 EAH Warman pump drawing 60-70 kW is required to circulate 250 m3/h through the system. The back pressure generated by the Filblast is in the range of 400-500 kPa depending upon pumping rate, pulp density and slurry rheology. The high shearing rate effectively negates the viscous effect of slurries and the addition of a gas further reduces the pulp density by virtue of the intensely aerated, homogeneous medium. The gold leaching Filblast cartridge elements are made of polyurethane but stainless steel, ni-hard, rubber or ceramics can be used depending on the operating temperature and design duty. The efficiency of the Filblast Leach Reactor in gold cyani­dation is due to the extremely efficient mixing, oxygen dissolu­tion and surface polishing action of the Filblast design. Either air or oxygen may be used but Atomaer recommend the use of oxygen because of the rate benefits gained from cyaniding at [02] significantly > 20 ppm D O in the reactor. Very high DO concentrations have been measured; in excess of 50 ppm. There is some debate as to whether the value is a true measure of the DO or the oxygen meter sensor is measuring the effect of a mass of very fine bubbles of free oxygen. Regardless of the fact the reactor has registered some amazing gold dissolution rates commonly in excess of 80 % during transit of the pulp through the reactor. The elapsed time is less than half a second!

The ASTM standard method D 5744-96 was developed to provide a well-defined kinetic test protocol, conducted under controlled reaction conditions, with the intent of generating reproducible results. A preliminary indication of the repeatability of a simplified alternative method (MN DNR method) was assessed and results from the MN DNR method were compared to those from the ASTM method. To provide an indication of repeatability, six samples from three different rock types were subjected to dissolution testing for periods of 20 to 68 weeks. Drainage pH values at the end of the tests were within 0.5 units in all cases and within 0.05 units in four cases. The percent difference from the mean for overall sulfate rates from paired cells ranged from 0.04 to 1756, with a median of 6.3%. Nine samples from four rock types were subjected to both MN DNR and ASTM tests for periods of 20 to 132 weeks. The difference in final drainage pH values forsix of the samples was less than 0.1 unit, and these values were less than pH 3.65 or greater than pH 8.0. The final drainage pH difference for the last three samples ranged from 0.15 to 0.4, and these values were ill the pH range of 6.2 to 7.2. The sulfate release rates for the periods of record for the MN DNR method were 70 to 150% of those for the ASTM method, with a median value of 110%. Sulfate and calcium release from the two methods was not substantially different. The MN DNR method typically produced higher magnesium release.

During the past two years a computer program called "COPOR," Computerized Open Pit Optimization Routine, has been developed and used for mine planning of several base metal deposits. This routine utilizes a three dimensional computerized block model of an orebody, some economic parameters and operating constraints to locate the mineable or economic limits of the deposit schedule the yearly production from the mine and produce bench by bench ore reserve summaries and maps of the yearly and ultimate pit configurations. The moving cone method is used to perform these functions with a conventional block model. This model is conventional in the sense that each block is assumed to be homogenous; i.e., either ore or waste but not a mixture of the two. Due to the nature of a seam type deposit this approach is not realistic; therefore, revisions have been made to form a new version of the COPOR program. This version has been named "COALOR," Coal Optimization Routine. COALOR contains all of the power of the COPOR program but is equipped to handle the intricacies of coal seam type deposits. The deposit can be composed of a single seam or multiple seams which are horizontal or dipping at any angle. The numerous coal quality values can be incorporated to aid the optimization of the economic pit limits and yearly scheduling.

Optical fibers have revolutionized the telecommunication industry, because of their ability to transmit large amounts of data over long distances. Without optical fibers many of the communication technologies on which business, industry and research rely would be impossible. In addition to their use as communication devices, optical fibers are often used as sensors. Despite the great promise that optical fibers have for the development of many types of remote sensing devices, few remote sensing devices have been built for use in the mineral industries. This paper will describe the use of optical fibers as sensors for surfactant adsorption at mineral surfaces.

"INTRODUCTION Over the past twenty years this Linear-Regression Modeling has become widely accepted for ensuring limits are not exceeded at a site, using the Scaled-Distance variable. In today’s industry, numerous equations are present for different scenarios, geologic environments, hole sizes, and numerous other factors with an emphasis on site-specific equations developed for all major projects; however, underground blasting applications have not been analyzed to a great degree of detail. Without previous knowledge this puts underground blasting operations into a guessing-game to ensure that vibration levels are not exceeded. This paper will review two recent projects that have been worked on by the authors and linear-regression models that were used with both burn cuts and stope blasts. BLAST VIBRATIONS MODELING The first major research project conducted in the United States on blasting vibration was Bulletin 442 (Thoenen & Windes, 1942) which looked at the relationship between blasting and blast vibrations in the fall of 1940. This study examined numerous blasts and began the investigation into topics such as damping, structural damage from vibrations, frequency dependency on vibration, resonance vibration, delayed blasting, and numerous other factors. Bulletin 442 had two major conclusions which are: 1. The vibration from a blast can be predicted with a relationship of size of the shot and distance to the structure (now known as scaled distance) 2. “The vibration of a structure at resonance does not in itself cause damage because of the restraining effect of damping inherent in the building” (Thoenen & Windes, 1942) Due to the increase of blasting near homes and busier areas the USBM commissioned an additional study to further develop a few of the topics covered in Bulletin 442; this study would go on to be published as RI 6561 (Duvall, Johnson, Meyer, & Devine, 1963) with the study looking into delayed blasting and the relationship between charge weight, distance, and peak particle velocity of the blast. Pluess-Staufer (California) Inc. Lucerne Valley California operation is one of the largest producers of high brightness high purity fme grind limestone products in western North America. The San Bernardino Mountains area of southern California contains the largest high brightness, high purity limestone mining operations and undeveloped reserves in western North America (Fig. 1, Brown 1987). Combined annual production of high brightness limestone products from several operations is approximately 1.5 million tons, with an estimated gross value of $75 million dollars per year (Fig. 2). An additional 5.0 million tons of cement grade limestone is mined by several large cement producers in the nearby Mojave area (Brown, in press). The purpose of this paper is to summarize the geologic setting, genesis and mining of white, high purity crystalline limestone by Pluess-Staufer (California) Inc.

The dispersion of oily collector has significant effect on the flotation recovery of ultrafine coal. Generally, reagent dispersion is accomplished by mechanical mixing and/or ultrasonic agitation, followed by direct addition of dispersed collector into the flotation cell. However, such dispersion and reagent addition techniques are invariably inadequate and non-selective. A new collector utilization technique involving gas phase transport of atomized collector has shown improved results when compared to conventional reagent addition techniques. This new technique involves atomization of the collector into the gas stream. Under these circumstances an aerosol is introduced into the flotation cell. Initially, the oil is dispersed within the gas phase (continuous with respect to oil) and the gas phase is dispersed within the pulp (continuous with respect to aerosol). In the flotation cell, the atomized oil droplets coalesce on the bubble's surface and create a de-facto oil-encapsulated bubble. This approach provides excellent dispersion, increases selectivity, and most significantly increases the flotation rate of ultrafine coal. Furthermore, atomization of collector/frother combinations yielded improved flotation yields and maintained near uniform froth levels which is a desirable feature in coal flotation. In addition to flotation experiments, microscopic examinations of the attachment of oil-coated bubbles at a coal surface were conducted by attachment-time and contact-angle measurements. The oil coated bubbles attach at significantly faster rates and with a higher contact angle than do oil free bubbles.

Corrosion has long been identified as a potential risk to the long-term ground support stability due to degradation of internal ground support elements such as rock bolts but also to surface support from mesh, straps, bolt plates, and ancillary support of utilities such as hangers. The emphasis is to understand the corrosion mechanisms on the primary ground support elements and any supplemental steel or arch sets. The water and chemical processes from oxidation(rust), stress corrosion cracking, and even the electrical charge created during these reactions contribute to the corrosion of the steel support elements. The main goals are to mitigate the effects of corrosion and to be able to predict those areas of high water or high sulphide for potential rehab maps. It is also essential to identify and classify the visible corrosion as part of damage mapping and provide bolt testing to those areas of suspected internal damage from corrosion. This is important to get an estimate of the support longevity or expected life before rehab to minimize the overall cost of the operation.

West Virginia, although having adequate solar insolation, has witnessed very little actual solar development to date. The reasons for this lack of development are varied, but the primary obstacles to future development appear to be the absence of state-level policies and regulations promoting growth in the solar industry. West Virginia possesses large tracts of under-utilized land throughout the state created by previous mountaintop mining operations that could theoretically be re-purposed for solar farm development. Accomplishing this task will require not only revisions to the current legislation, but also acceptance by utility companies, landowners, and mining companies. Solar developers will need confidence that they can secure revenue from the electricity and Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) generated by solar projects. Additionally, solar companies will need assurance they will be protected from any non-related environmental liabilities that could arise in the future. The primary avenue in bringing significant solar development to West Virginia will come through large corporate clients demanding or partnering with utility companies for incorporation of solar options into their energy portfolio to help meet established sustainability goals. This scenario has been witnessed in other states where a large client demands renewable options. Solar development could also represent a means through which mine operators might alleviate some of their reclamation and bonding obligations; where the landowner could supplement income from their underutilized land holdings; and where displaced miners could be repurposed in solar installation/maintenance jobs. Utilizing data from the West Virginia Permit Database, this report identifies several mine sites that hold potential for solar development in the future. INTRODUCTION The diversification of energy sources in the United States (US) has seen major shifts during the past decade resulting from: • A sudden abundance of low-cost natural gas becoming available through advanced horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing techniques. • Incentive-driven policies leading to new development in alternative energy. • The emergence of renewable energy sources, proliferated by state and federal level incentives and falling capital costs. Coal was once the primary low-cost fuel source for the generation of electricity in the US for most of the last century, providing approximately 50 percent of the total production capacity. However, within the past decade lower-cost natural gas has overtaken coal as the primary source of fuel used in electricity generation, and renewable sources have steadily grown to account for approximately 10 percent of the overall mix.

Indian coals, which are of Gondwana origin, contain high amounts of mineral matter, wherein the extraneous material was intimately mixed in the coal matrix during the formation stage, causing a high level of impurity in the run-of-mine (ROM) material. These coals possess difficult to very difficult washability characteristics. Beneficiation of high-ash non-coking coals of India has become the prerequisite for improving the overall economics and efficiency of power generation. The use of dry cleaning systems in India for beneficiation of non-coking coals has gaining renewed interest recently. The benefit of the dry beneficiation process is to exploit the given resources while providing a more reliable and consistent quality fuel with a low operating cost. M/S Allmineral has introduced a technique for the dry beneficiation of coal, which is being tried in India for the treatment of high-ash non-coking coals. The first commercial air jig of 50 t/hr capacity was installed and commissioned to beneficiate high-ash coals of 40 x 5 mm feed with an ash content of 40%; a clean coal product of 33% ash was produced and is being used for a sponge iron plant.

Following on from many years of research aimed at improving the effectiveness of truck haulage operations in mines operated by BHP Minerals, BHP Research developed a concept for an Innovative Large Mining Truck, (ILMT) which has the potential to significantly improve the cost effectiveness of rear dump mining trucks. The ILMT concept reduces the empty vehicle weight dramatically, greatly reduces unequal rear tyre loading and improves ride and handling characteristics. The concept has been taken to the "proof of concept" prototype truck stage with the cooperative efforts of BHP Coal, BHP Research, Liebherr Mining Truck, Inc., Liebherr-Australia and Birrana Engineering. Testing of the prototype truck commenced at a coal mine in Queensland, Australia during May 1996. Preliminary results from the testing program are very encouraging. Expectations are being met and in some cases exceeded.

In the estimation of recoverable resources, geostatistical techniques such as Multiple Indicator Kriging require a change of support correction to derive theoretical recoveries based on an assumed level of mining selectivity. The change of support models most widely used in practice entail model based generalized corrections either on a global or local basis. Examples include the affine and indirect lognormal methods. Change of support corrections derived empirically through short-scale conditional simulation realizations often show notable differences compared with theoretical corrections determined using model variogram parameters. The existing changes of support models are reviewed and an alternative method is proposed.

The Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project is a $3-billion project that will link Dulles International Airport with the downtown center of Washington D.C. by way of a single seat train ride. The project is mostly above ground, but it does include two short, yet complex, tunnels through the area of Tyson?s Corner. The project is being completed in two phases. The Dulles Transit Partners (DTP), led by Bechtel, was awarded the first phase, a $1.6-bil-lion phase that includes 17 km (11 miles) of track with five stations. At Tyson?s Corner, the project includes twin 730-m- (2,400-ft-) long, 6-m- (20-ft-) diameter tunnels. Bechtel is self-performing construction for the $1.6-billion design-build job. Gall Zeidler Consultants was hired by DTP as designer for the NATM tunnel portion of Phase 1, and Beton-und-Monierbau was hired as tunnel subcontractor. Tyson?s Corner is an affluent and congested area that sits 152 m (500 ft) above sea level. To get through the area, it was decided that tunnels would be the best option with the least amount of disturbance to the surrounding areas. However, with extremely shallow groundcover above some points as well as soft soil throughout, the tunnels are also the most complex aspect of Phase 1. About 213 m (700 ft) was constructed utilizing the cut-and-cover method. The remaining 518 m (1,700 ft) is being constructed using the New Austrian Tunneling Method, which integrates the principles of the behavior of rock and soil masses under load, and monitoring the performance of underground construction during construction. ?The tunnel only falls 2 m (7 ft) from one end to the other and we pass through two soil conditions, they are both soft ground,? said Dominic Cerulli, tunnel task manager for Bechtel. ?Soft ground is very tricky because you have to close the ring in a timely manner to minimize settlements at the surface. If you don?t close the ring quickly to achieve a round structure that?s good in compression, the tunnel could start necking and squatting and the ground above it will settle. We are under major roadways, so excessive settlement would be a bad thing.?

Requirements for full extraction in underground coal mining call for inexpensive, safe, techniques to be competitive with conventional methods. Longwall and shortwall systems are to some extent employed for this purpose. Another method would be rib pillar extraction (and pillar extraction). These methods are compared with each other with respect to procedure, equipment, safety, roof control, investment, output, performance, costs The advantages of r.p.e. show this method very attractive. Number and cost of equipment are lowest. Safety and roof control becomes improved by a mobile roof support recently developed in Austria. Its successful use in the R.S.A. is being explained.

Design of the Bajo de la Alumbrera Project started in June 1995 and concentrate production commenced early in the Third Quarter of 1997. The project is situated in North-Western Argentina and is being developed by Minera Alumbrera Limited which is owned by MIM Holdings Limited of Australia (50%), North Limited of Australia (25%) and Rio Algom Limited of Canada (25%). This paper outlines the key features that were incorporated in the design from both process and plant layout perspectives. It explains the background of flowsheet and equipment selection for the plant. A feature of the flowsheet is that it incorporates gravity gold circuits in both primary and regrind circuits for recovery of gold to dore as well as in the copper concentrate product.

Rising demand, artificial market conditions, increased overseas competition, and a fluctuating international situation have brought ever increasing pressures to bear on the nonferrous metals industries, and particularly in the United States, Although capacity is being expanded by the construction of new plants and the development of new ore deposits, increasing attention is being focused on the possibilities of improving the performance of the existing installations and of getting the most out of the new equipment now installed. At first sight the task appears formidable. Based on raw materials which are nonhomogeneous, and possessing characteristics which are hard to quantify, even the processes by which the values in the ores are concentrated and extracted are in many cases not fully understood. The necessary analytical equipment and transducers demanded by these industries have also been slow in development and their earlier absence has hampered the application of modern control technology, This is reflected in plants which have been designed for ease of manual rather than automatic control, and in which the application of control techniques at first sight appears economically prohibitive. However, in any industry progress often comes only in small steps, It may be that by the wise choice of limited objectives and perhaps only partial solutions, substantial improvements in plant performance can be implemented now, and with only a modest investment. If modern control equipment is chosen of the type which can be reprogrammed, advantage can be taken later of more sophisticated solutions as the technology of the industry advances. This task of improving plant performance can and must be commenced even though our knowledge is incomplete. The experience of a related mineral consuming industry, with similar problems in the past, can be encouraging.
