Mineral sand products have been produced from beach sand heavy minerals for nearly a century. These minerals have specific gravities of 3.0 or higher and are extremely resistant to weathering. The most common economic heavy minerals are ilmenite, leucoxene, rutile, zircon, stauarolite, monazite, garnet, and the aluminum-silicate minerals. Of these, ilmenite is the most abundant. In some cases a deposit may contain only one or two economic heavy minerals whereas in others five or six may be present. Heavy mineral mining began in the late eighteen hundreds when monazite was mined for its thorium content. This was followed by mining activity on the North Florida coast just south of Jacksonville Beach - where ilmenite and zircon were first separated during the WW I (1,8). Modern heavy mineral mining began in Eastern Australia during the late nineteen-thirties and spread to the United States during World War II. It is the purpose of this paper to review the commercial heavy mineral products, their sources, and their uses.

FTIR measurements using a special ATR cell were carried out to investigate the adsorption of two thiol collectors, potassium ethyl xanthate (KEX) and sodium diethyl dithlophoshate (NaDTP), on an unoxidized lead sulfide surface. Both qualitative and quantitative determinations of the collectors were made at the coverages from two monolayers down to 2% of the monolayer. The experiments revealed that the thiol collector species coordinate to the lead atoms at the surface of lead sulfide but the surface products distinctly differ from the precipitated bulk lead compounds. There exists a linear relationship between the coverage and the signal intensity of the IR spectra within the coverage range studied.

The mine, recognized as arguably one of the richest rare earths deposits in the world, is at the center of Molycorps? strategic ?Mine to Magnets? plan. It aims to secure America?s future supply of rare-earth-dependent technologies by developing a strong domestic rare earth industry. Molycorp identifies rare-earth-dependent technologies as those that cannot be produced without rare earth materials. The list of these technologies is long and growing. It encompasses everything from personal electronics and batteries for hybrid cars to permanent magnet generator wind turbines and national defense applications.

Since 1882, world zinc production has increased. In contrast, United States zinc production rose until about 1915, but since then has remained nearly constant, with a slight tendency to decrease. Production from the Tri-State district, the largest early source of zinc in the United States, has gone down steadily; this decline has been balanced by a growth in the rate of other districts. These changes in United States production are due to economic, not geological, factors. Recent exploration has located large mineable ore bodies; additional deposits will undoubtedly be found in the strata-bound carbonate rock and volcanogenic environments. A statistical analysis of the exploration effort in the Middle Tennessee district indicates that new discoveries can be expected there. Thus, the United States is in an early stage of the production cycle for zinc. Of major mining districts in the United States, only the Tri-State is exhausted under current economic conditions; large zinc resources of low-grade material, which would repay mining at higher prices or improved technology, are known to exist in that district.

A prevalent technique for the recovery of silver from wastes generated in silver-tungsten electrical contact fabrication is electrowinning. Such scrap is placed in a permeable plastic basket which constitutes the anode compartment and this basket is suspended in a larger cell in which the cathode is mounted. A silver nitrate solution is used as the electrolyte and, upon application of an electric field, the silver migrates to the cathode where it deposits out. At times, there is tungsten migration to the cathode compartment and consequent co-deposition with the silver. This W contamination, which may amount to several thousand ppm, necessitates additional purification of the deposited Ag and its removal would therefore be advantageous. The elimination of the W impurity would also extend the operating period of the cell with corresponding increase in the Ag output and savings in labor costs.

The angular spiral lining system reduces energy consumption and grinding media consumption in grate discharge ball mills. This paper discusses the effect of this lining system on mill product size distribution. Performance comparisons of a grinding circuit outfitted with angular spiral liners in the ball mills are made with respect to standard double-wave liner installations. The angular spiral lining system was developed by Waagner-Biro of Austria. The installation of this lining system at Magma Copper Company, San Manuel, Arizona, is the first of its kind in a grate discharge ball mill used for wet grinding.

The reclamation of an open dragline pit (Pond A3P-2) at the Gibbons Creek lignite mine in east-central Texas required neutralization of acid mine pit water. At the start of treatment with hydrated lime (Ca(OH)2) on March 28, 2000, the pond had partially filled with 913,000 m3 (740 acre ft) of pH 4.9 water. Another 666,600 m3 (540 acre ft) of pH 3.3 water was pumped in from an adjacent pit (PitA3P- 1). By the end of the project (July 5, 2000), a combined volume of 1,579,000m3(1,280ac-ft or 417milliongal) in PondA3P-2 had been successfully treated to pH 8.2 with 431 t (475 st) of lime. This was two to three times more neutralizer than laboratory trials and detailed chemical titration had predicted. The main reasons for the difference are thought to be the inadequate representation in a laboratory setting of some of the chemical reactions that occurred in the field, including incomplete mixing of reactants, reactions with clay minerals in the pit walls, the kinetics of biologically-mediated reactions and the kinetics of aluminum oxyhydroxide polymerization (aging).

This paper presents the results of numerical modeling of the fractured zone around longwall gateroads. The numerical computations have been based on the results of underground measurements of the fractured zone around longwall gateroads, which were performed for various geological and mining conditions and measured with the use of the endoscopic method with a digital camera. Having results of the underground investigations, trials of duplicating them by the Finite Element Method using software PHASE and the Hoek-Brown failure criterion were performed. In order that the fractured zone predicted by the model-based computations closely simulate that measured underground, some selected parameters in the Hoek-Brown failure criterion were modified based on the earlier determined relations used for prediction of the roof-to-floor convergence in longwall gateroads. As a result, the model-based computations produce results very close to those obtained from the underground measurements. Determination of the fractured-rock zone around the mine roads is of great importance to mining practice, especially in planning and designing supports for longwall gateroads. The influence of the front abutment pressure causes the fractured rock zone around the roads to increase and results in an increase of support load. Moreover, proper determination of the fractured rock zone is one of basic elements in the process of planning roof bolting for mine workings.

Common mineral resources (sand, gravel, crushed stone, etc.), which are so necessary for the construction of metropolitan areas, are rapidly being depleted or otherwise rendered unavailable in the very areas that need them most. However, the problem of planning for these resources involves a number of independent and dependent variables that must first be defined and related. Finally, a dollar value must be assigned where possible. Complex interrelationships between the variables and their dependence on outside factors has made mathematical "solution" of the problem of planning for non-renewable mineral resources difficult at the present time. Therefore, the use of computer simulation is suggested as a means by which this complex problem can be investigated. The purpose of this paper is to report on a continuing research program whose objectives are: (1) to delineate the factors involved in planning for the utilization of common mineral resources in urban-suburban environs; (2) to construct a planning model for these materials amenable to computer analysis, (3) evaluate the model by using test cases, and (4) perform a sensitivity analysis to determine the initial parameters in future planning for these materials.

The People's Republic of China has abundant coal resources with proven reserves amounting to 582 Gt (641 billion st). Recognizing coal as a major energy source on which to build the country's industrial and economic base, there has been a rapid increase in production since the founding of the People's Republic. In 1949, only 29.4 Mt (32.4 million st) of coal was mined. Production has increased to 576.5 Mt (635.5 million st), exclusive of Taiwan, at present, making China the third largest coal producing country in the world. Plans call for a 4-5% increase in annual production for the next 20 years. Coal constitutes 70% of the primary energy consumption in China. The remaining 30% is divided between petroleum and natural gas with 26% and hydropower with 4%. Coal use and consumption is divided as follows. General industrial use comprised 48.9%, power generation uses 20.1%, and coking accounts for 10.5% (6.3% for metallurgy and 4.2% for chemical industry). Domestic use such as home heating and cooking makes up 17.8% and coal-fired steam engines for railways uses 4.7%. Coal Districts Coal underlies about 1/18 of China's land area. It occurs in 30 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities. In addition, the western interior region, which has not been explored, may contain sizable reserves. Based on geology, geography, and administration, the coal fields can be grouped into five districts as shown in Fig. 1. The north China district, the heart of the industrial base for the country, has the most extensive and largest deposits of the five districts. This amounts to almost 40% of the country's total reserves. The largest coal basin with proven reserves of 181.4 Gt (200 billion st) and the most exploitable seams is located some 300 km (186 miles) southwest of Beijing (Peking) in Shanxi Province. Centered around Taiyuan, the compound field extends from Datong in the north to Xian in the south. Its western extension is not known fully. The Northwest and Northeast districts contain the second and third largest deposits. The biggest coal field in South China is located in the Sichuan and Guizhou Provinces near Chongqing. At present, it is not known if sizable coal measures exist in the Tibetan district. Coal Types China's coal varies widely both in age and rank. A NIOSH study on occupational deaths between 1980 and 1989 indicated that in the United States, mining had the highest average annual fatality rate (3 1.9 per 100,000 workers) of any other major industry. Since "lack of training" was often cited as the primary cause of accidents, NIOSH has been investigating new methods for effective training. One such method is the use of low- cost, desktop computers to simulate a virtual mining environment. Computer-based training offers several advantages over conventional training because the computer programs provide a three- dimensional environment that allows the trainee to practice using evacuation routes, encounter mining hazards, and view mining operations without being exposed to any real danger. One major focus of the project is mine escapeway multiuser training using desktop virtual reality programs. Researchers have imported mine maps into the software for the purpose of practicing actual evacuation routes and procedures. Various scenarios for evacuation can be practiced in a three-dimensional computer simulation of the mine in a disaster situation, complete with smoke, fire, and other dangers. Depending on the trainee's job description (i.e., foreman, shift boss, beltman, etc.), certain tasks need to be performed in addition to navigating primary and/or secondary escape routes. Each scenario allows for individual or team-based training and provides a means to educate mine workers in hazard recognition and hazard avoidance. Using this program, mine workers can practice evacuating various mine layouts without the danger and expense associated with escapeway training in an actual underground mine. Each scenario can be changed to test the trainee's reaction in a variety of circumstances and run many times so the trainee can practice concepts. This training experience will help reinforce the knowledge acquired during more conventional classroom instruction, and the inherent flexibility of the program allows training materials to be tailored to meet the specific requirements of individual mines.

Examination of cored material from the Southern Extension of the Florida Phosphate District has indicated a decidedly complex and diverse sequence of phosphatic sedimentary units. The perfunctory logging techniques formerly used in the Central District are inadequate to properly describe the intricate geology of these sediments. Adequate geologic training and familiarity with the potential ramifications of his judgement are a necessity for the logging geologist. A combination descriptive-graphic logging model is proposed that utilizes a standardized sediment nomenclature system and descriptive symbols for type materials commonly found in these sediments. Justification for adoption of this or a similar logging model is discussed.

Phytotechnologies use plants to remediate various media impacted with different types of contaminants. These technologies can be implemented either in situ or ex situ. The affected media in which phytotechnologies can be applied include soil, sediments, groundwater and surface water. They are best applied at sites with shallow contamination of organic, nutrient, or metal pollutants that are amenable to one of five treatment options: phytoextraction, phytotrans-formation, rhizosphere, bioremediation, phyto-stabilization or rhizofiltration. Phytoremediation can be used along or, in some cases, in place of mechanical cleanup methods. Phytoremediation can be used to clean up metals, pesticides, solvents, explosives, crude oil, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and landfill leachates.

The stockpiling and reclaiming of bulk materials can be a challenging task for engineers seeking the optimum solution for plant needs, reliability, and at lowest unit cost. The objective of this paper will be to expose advantages, disadvantages and limitations of many storage and reclaiming systems to the responsible engineer and management. The paper will emphasize the practical aspect of stockpiling and reclaiming methods. Many valuable and interesting papers are available dealing with the theoretical viewpoint and application of a particular manufacturer's machine. Several of these are mentioned in the bibliography. As many practical parameters as possible will be given. After twenty years in the field of designing and selling bulk materials handling systems, the needs of the user and the plant are recognized and reasonably understood. This paper cannot give solutions to all problems In this vast field but will stress practical applications and examples of various installations. The evolution of advancements in materials handling is based upon not only technological innovations, but learning from many experiences of others and utilizing them as stepping stones to improved installations.

on' January 6, ,1992, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) issued an Advanced Notice of Proposed Rule Making (ANPRM) for diesel particulate (DP). The ANPRM identified five areas where the Agency was seeking additional information to assist in the rule making process. These areas were exposure 'limits, risk assessment, consideration of other information, sampling and monitoring methods, and feasibility. The period for submitting information relative to the ANPRM closed July 10, 1992. Prior to issuance of the ANPRM, the agency was involved in conducting studies to evaluate sampling and control technologies and to gather information with respect to occupational exposures to diesel particulate in underground mining operations employing diesel-powered equipment. Since issuance of the notice, additional studies have been conducted to provide supplementary information in these specific areas. Results of these additional studies indicate that average DP levels in coal mines not using aftertreatment range from 0.9 to 2.1 mg/m3. Aftertreatment devices can reduce these levels by approximately 50 to 90 percent. Studies conducted in metal and nonmetal mines showed average DP levels ranging from 0.3 to 1.6 mg/m3.

In 1976, a decision was made to install a conveying system to transport ore 10.3 km (6.4 miles) from the new Eisenhower Partnership Mine to Twin Buttes. The system, supplied and installed by Cable Belt Limited, of England, represents a radical departure from conventional conveyor systems. The driving tension is applied through two endless wire ropes while the belt acts only as the carrying medium. Features of the system are a single 2240 kw (3000 hp) drive and a 60° angle bend. Construction was completed in two years. Full production was attained after several months' operation.

The goal of the project reported in this paper was to make recommendations for changes in roof bolting procedures and bolter design that would reduce roof bolter accident rates. To that end the project identified the major hazards associated with each task a roof bolter operator per-forms, normalized task accident frequencies. by the time spent on each task, reviewed equipment design features and operating procedures related to the identified hazards and developed recommendations for equipment and procedural changes that would reduce, if not eliminate, the hazards. The design/build of two adjacent vertical mine shafts in difficult ground conditions at a mining complex in the midwestern United States required innovative construction techniques. Construction of the 267-m-deep Service Shaft required full depth dewatering wells and ground freezing. Blind drilling was utilized to excavate the 257-m-deep Production Shaft and it was finished with a steel/concrete composite liner that was floated into place. An equally unique component of the installation included supplying a high capacity vertical conveyor system, featuring a 273-m-lift. Other components of the project include the mine level development, as well as the design and installation of three hoisting systems, including a 45-ton capacity men/materials hoisting system.

This was perhaps never more evident than through the events that unfolded during August and October in a remote desert in northern Chile. On Aug. 5, the main shaft of the San José copper and gold mine near Copiapó in Chile?s Atacama Region collapsed, leaving 33 miners trapped more than 624 m (2,000 ft) beneath the earth?s surface.

Beginning in 1974, the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, sponsored R & D efforts related to further development and use of continuous face haulage in underground coal mines (Cowan, 1975). The U.S. Department of Energy continued this effort as of October 1977. This paper represents an update of an article previously published in Mining Engineering magazine (Mayercheck, 1979). Development progress is summarized for a variety of prototype systems or components now being built, surface tested, or tried underground.
