In March, 1988, a fire occurred in a large underground coal mine. Coal Mine Safety and Health of the Mine Safety and Health Administration was immediately notified of the situation. They requested the assistance of the Pittsburgh Health Technology Center (PHTC) to provide monitoring and analysis of the mine atmosphere in and around the fire area to insure the safety of the miners escaping from the mine and for the miners involved in extinguishing the fire. The capability to provide this type assistance is maintained by the PHTC Offices located at 4800 Forbes Avenue, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The equipment used is maintained field ready and can be mobilized almost immediately. This paper will discuss the response to this recent major mine fire.

Lornex Mining Corporation operates an open pit porphyry copper mine in the Highland Valley southwest of Kamloops with a rated capacity of 43 500 TPD (48,000 TPD). It went into production in April 1972. Its concentrator consists of two grinding and flotation circuits in parallel each composed of a 6 000 KW (8,000 HP) 9,75 m (32 foot) diameter by 4,724 m (15'-6") semi-autogenous primary mill feeding two 3 000 KW (4,000 HP) 5,029 m (16.5 foot) diameter by 7,01 m (23 foot) secondary ball mills each feeding a bank of flotation cells. ,The original tailings system picked up the tailings from the flota¬tion circuits in a concrete collection box in the mill and carried the 36% solids density by weight slurry 488 m (1,600LF) through a 1100 mm (42 inch) diameter wood stave pipeline on a .46 percent slope to three 99,06 m (325 foot) diameter center drive thickeners. From the collection box under the thickeners the tailings line con¬sisted of three sections, carrying 50% solids density slurry. The first section consisted of 1460 m (4,800 LF) of 910 mm (36 inch) asbestos cement pipe for gravity flow from the thickener under flow elevation of 1252,4 m (4,109 feet) to the first pump station at elevation 1207,6 m (3,962 feet). Eight concrete drop boxes were used to limit the maximum slope on the pipeline to 0.5 percent.

Introduction With the increasing need to mine lower grade ores, high energy-related costs in comminution are of major concern. Very fine grinding is needed to liberate the fine mineral particles in these ores. Not only is this expensive, but it leads to greater losses in slimes. Gravity concentration techniques become unacceptably inefficient for particle treatment below 25 to 50 µm, and even flotation fails in the ultra-fine range. Ore from the South Crofty mine near Redruth, Cornwall, was subjected to thermal pretreatment in the hope that differential thermal expansion of the minerals would lead to intergranular cracking, and thus enhanced liberation. South Crofty ore contains about 1% tin as cassiterite associated with a complex assemblage of quartz, chlorite, tourmaline, and hema¬tite in granite and slate. Recovery of cassiterite can be as low as 70%, as overgrinding occurs during stage reduction of the material to 1 mm (primary grinding) and 180 µm (regrinding). Cassiterite is present in grain sizes ranging from submicroscopic to + 10 mm, the bulk being predominantly in the range of 50 µm to 3 mm. Experimental Flat polished sections of the ore were photographed in reflected light using a Vickers M17 microscope. The sections were then heated in a Carbolite LMF4 muffle furnace. The heating rate and temperature were monitored by a thermocouple immersed in the bed of particles. Previous work by Sherring (1981) on the same material showed that a 55% reduction in grinding resistance occurred when the material was rapidly heated and cooled through the quartz inversion tem¬perature (573°C), where a volumetric expansion of 0.86% occurs. The samples were therefore heated to 650°C at 26°/min, and were then water-quenched to room temperature. The effect of heat treatment on the mineralogy and fracture network was assessed by examining the same area after treatment. Results Most of the sections examined showed that extensive transgranular cracking occurred as a result of heat treatment. Such cracking, although weakening the rock and hence reducing the work index, would in no way enhance the liberation of the cassiterite from the host minerals. Intergranular cracking, which would lead to enhanced liberation, was difficult to discern under reflected light, but there was evidence of such cracking in some of the sections examined. Figures 1 and 2 are examples of typical sections before and after heat treatment. Figures la and lb - show cassiterite in hematite, Fig. lb, in normal incident illumination, illustrating clearly that after heat treatment, transgranular fracture is evident in the cassiterite. If any intergranular cracking has occurred, it is not evident in this photograph. Figures 2a and 2b show cassiterite in quartz before and after treatment. Fracturing in both minerals after treatment can clearly be seen, and there is evidence of intergranular fracturing. However, protruding "arms" of cassiterite are severed by transgranular fracture. Subgrains of quartz have also been isolated by trans¬granular fracture. There is major transgranular cracking across the wider sections of cassiterite. Discussion The effect of rapidly heating South Crofty tin ore to 650°C, followed by water-quenching to room temperature, has been studied by observing the fracture networks in mineral grains. The choice of 650°C as the heating temperature was influenced by the work of Sherring (1981), who found considerable reduction in grinding resistance after thermal pretreatment of the same ore. Scheding et al. (1981), however, have shown, by means of a crude calculation, that heat treatment cannot be justified solely on the basis of reduced grinding costs. The cost of heat treatment far out-weighs that of grinding, resulting in the combined costs for heat treatment being over six times that for grinding unheated material. The most economically attractive aspect of heat treatment is the possibility of enhanced liberation of the valuable mineral due to increased intergranular rather than transgranular fracture. Grinding costs would be greatly reduced by improved liberation at coarser sizes, and the costs of ancillary processes, such as dewatering and tailings disposal, would be reduced. The most significant economic effect, however, would be in improved metallurgical efficiency. Improved liberation would increase concentrate grades, and recoveries would be higher, particularly in the case of ores where high slime losses are produced due to the excessively fine grinding required to produce adequate liberation. Manser (1983) has shown that only a 1% increase in tin recovery, at the same concentrate grade, would be sufficient to offset heat treatment costs on South Crofty ore. Heavy liquid analysis and shaking table separation have been used to evaluate the effect of thermal treatment on processing (Binns, 1984; Scheding, 1981; Sherring, 1981). However, treatment of unheated and heated samples of South Crofty ore, ground to the same product size, by such methods have shown little evidence of improved metallurgical efficiency after thermal pretreatment. The large amount of transgranular fracturing revealed by reflected light studies helps to explain this lack of improvement. The recession that began in late 1980 has proved to be not only prolonged and severe, but in certain ways unique in its effect on the mineral industries among the periods of economic slowdown experienced in the Western world since the end of World War II. This time almost all minerals have been affected. In previous business turndowns, by contrast, some mineral sectors have with-stood economic adversity well. They experienced little or no adverse effect-thanks either to a strong secular expansion in the markets for their particular product or to specific factors that caused demand to be well maintained. For example, aluminum, molybdenum, and nickel are three metals that enjoyed extraordinary growth in applications during the years 1946-1973. These metals were little affected during the recessions that occurred in that era. Similarly, coal did not suffer a pronounced drop in sales in the 1974-75 turndown because, with the price of oil rising sharply, a switch away from oil and back to coal was clearly indicated for some energy-intensive applications. Oil itself was largely impervious to the ups and downs of the business cycle until very recently. And the precious metals, gold and silver, have often been regarded as benefiting from reduced economic activity because labor becomes more available, productivity rises, and operating costs diminish. In the current recession, however, no major mineral has escaped the broad trend. The secular growth factors that were previously so evident for aluminum, molybdenum, and nickel have disappeared, at least temporarily. The stable pricing behavior that previously characterized all three of these commodities has been replaced by extreme price weakness and apparent inability of the major producers to continue their roles as market leaders. Coal and oil both have suffered from a sharp drop in energy requirements. There are those who now anticipate a collapse of the market control over oil prices so clearly exercised by OPEC since 1973. If oil prices are no longer effectively controlled by the governments of the exporting countries, then coal prices are also certain to be affected. And the combination of high interest rates, tight money, and a change in public perceptions of precious metals put the skid under gold and silver quotations in 1981 and early 1982. Although inflation has been viewed as the scourge of most Western countries ever since the oil crises of 1973-74, prices-in constant dollars-of most minerals have not risen. On the contrary, with the exception of the precious metals and oil, for most minerals the prices that prevailed at the end of 1982 were close to the levels of the Great Depression of the 1930s in constant dollar terms. Table 1 compares prices for copper, lead, zinc, and aluminum at the end of 1982 with the average prices in 1934, stated in constant 1967 dollars. This emphasis on prices for mineral commodities reflects the fact that profits of mining enterprises vary directly with the level of prices. Manufacturing and retailing enterprises march to a different tune. They establish sales prices based on costs. Their profits tend to vary with volume. Commodities are for all practical purposes fungible, that is the advantages of known brands in marketing manufactured goods have little application in a commodity market. Thus the individual seller of minerals is unable to establish his sales prices. Except where a monopoly is present, he must sell at the going market. His option is to abstain from selling if he finds the price unremunerative. In past recessions, some mineral producers chose to do precisely that-either accumulating a substantial share of their output in inventory or, in prolonged downturns, abstaining from production. During the current recession, however, private-sector mining companies did not have the option of accumulating inventories to any great extent. Capital costs for new mineral projects or for expansion of existing facilities have escalated at an alarming rate since the early 1970s. Added to this has been the heavy cost of installing pollution control or safety equipment to comply with the regulations adopted in most industrialized countries (and particularly the United States) since 1968. The consequence has been that the financial position of most major mineral enterprises in mid-1980 was already strained. To finance increased inventories meant incurring additional funded debt at high interest costs, thus impairing the concern's credit rating. Management Choices Private-sector managements have had to face up to the alternative of either continuing to produce at an unchanged rate and marketing output at unremunerative prices or reducing output. In many parts of the country, electric utilities use spot market coal to make up the difference between the amount of contract coal and the total amount burned. The utilities involved will normally have a structured contract for those companies supplying that spot coal. These contracts will often involve a pricing schedule with bonuses or penalties for coal above or below the specified coal quality goals. Normally, penalties will be assessed on the sulfur, ash, and other coal quality variables. This paper deals with some aspects of the pricing schedule of one of the eastern utilities that buys coal on the spot market. This utility has a number of plants that a supplier can attempt to supply through bidding procedures. The existence of the pricing schedule gives the supplier a number of different options. To the single-mine producer, options are available to send the coal to any demand site and to clean all, part, or none of the coal. In other words, he can ship to a number of different sites and can send different coal qualities to each site depending upon the level of preparation. In addition, the options to deliver blended coal to any given site will provide an additional level of complexity to the problem.

Although chlorine oxidation has been found to be effective in destroying the CN ion, an excess of chlorine is needed to drive the reaction to completion. This often results in the formation of residual chloramines, which are toxic to aquatic life and often regulated by various states. The interhalogen, bromine chloride (BrCl), has been found to be just as effective but without the formation of persistent, residual chloramines. The hydrolysis and subsequent disproportionation of the highly-polar BrCl molecule essentially yields a solution of hypobromous acid (HOBr) and nonoxidizing hydrochloric acid (HC1). Studies have been carried out to directly compare the mechanism of CN destruction with chlorine and bromine chloride.

Since the beginning of operations at the pellet plant at Ponta Ubu ES, Samarco Mineração SA has produced pellets for direct reduction and blast furnace processes. Of the total amount of pellets produced from 1977 through 1993, 55% are used in the blast furnace, about 45 Mt (49.6 million st). The principal components of pellet gangue are calcium oxide, magnesium oxide, silica and alumina. They should be added in adequate quantities to guarantee the mechanical resistance of the fired pellets under blast furnace conditions. Over the years, the pellets produced by Samarco had a silica content between 2.5% and 2.8% and varying binary basicity preferably between 0.8 and 0.85. On the other hand, the increasing amount of industrial waste in siderurgical plants caused by the increase of steel production has caused some countries to put into practice methods to reduce the volume of slag produced in the blast furnace. This paper’s goal is to find an alternative for decreasing the amount of slag produced in the blast furnace. It is possible to decrease pellet gangue by decreasing the silica content to about 2%, leaving the metallurgical properties and quality of pellets unaltered. For this work, Samarco pellets were used with SiO2between 2.5% and 2.8%, pellets with high silica and pellets with SiO2 between 2.0% and 2.3% low silica. Both were partially fluxed by the range of varying basicity CaO/SiO2from 0.8 to 0.95 during production.

Reflections on over ten years experience handling bituminous coal from railroad cars to ground storage and lake vessels. The arrangement of the facilities is described but the basic theme of the discussion is the experience gained and lessons learned from facility operation. The Great Lakes provide the maritime environment for the economical transport of vast quantities of raw materials from their source in the Upper Lakes (the Mesabi Range, for instance) to Lower Lake Ports. Lake Erie, because of its proximity to the steel centers , blossomed with the great ports that now line its southern shore - Toledo, Sandusky, Lorain, Cleveland, Huron, Ashtabula, Conneaut and Erie.

Grouting is a useful engineering tool for tunnels throughout the world. A wide variety of methods and materials are used, reflecting the broad range of geological, hydrogeological, and structural demands. Most tunnel grouting is conducted with cement, which produces acceptable results in appropriate conditions. However, there are cases where such grouts are not practical, but polyurethane grouts can be extremely useful. Regretfully, these grouts are frequently poorly understood, leading to improper application and therefore poor results. This paper provides a fundamental overview of their application, both used individually and in combination with cement. Case histories from Scandinavian practice are cited.

More than eighty years ago, in what we generally consider a more leisurely age, workers and engineers began the construction of the longest railroad tunnel in the world. When completed, the Simplon Tunnel ran more than twelve miles through the alps to connect Switzerland and Italy. Work began in 1898 and the tunnel was completed in 1905. In all it took about seven years to build one of the world's great tunnels. More than seven years ago, in what was hoped to be a rapid and constructive to the deaths of 38 workers in two spectacular tunnel disasters in 1971, the secretary of Labor's Construction Advisory Committee on Safety and Health began in January 1972 a search for an effective standard on tunnel safety. Much hard and useful work has been done, especially by the construction advisory committee' but more than seven years later, we still don't have a tunnel standard. We may speculate that, when the Simplon Tunnel was completed, workers and their bosses assembled to celebrate their achievement and to count their casualities. We have no need to speculate on the lack of achievement up to this time. An so far as I know, the bureaucrats have suffered no casualities except perhaps some unreported cases of ring-around-the-color. The only moral I can draw from all this is thai it is easier to penetrate solid rock than it is to get through bureaucratic fog. We can only hope that OSHA will finally take advantage of the work which was finished years ago and complete the actions necessary to give us a tunnel standard. A new flotation collector, benzyl arsonic acid, was used for the flotation of ilmenite. ESCA, Auger spectroscopy, and chemical analysis were used to investigate the correlation between the variation in surface constituents and the flotation recovery of ilmenite. Experiments indicated that, as the ratio of surface Ti ions/surface Fe ions increases, flotation recovery increases. pH regulation with an inorganic acid was found to be effective in changing the ratio of surface ions, and, hence, the flotation recovery.

The Pawtucket Tunnel is a 2.2-mi, 30.2-ft diameter CSO storage tunnel in Rhode Island. The primary tunnel is built using a dual-mode open-EPB TBM capable of sealing the face within 120 seconds to manage poor ground and water ingress which is launched from within a SEM starter tunnel. The main tunnel connects to four adits along its alignment, three of which are SEM tunnels and one being a MTBM tunnel. This contribution describes the selection process, potential risks, and requirements for the TBM, as well as the design of the main tunnel, the adits, and the adit-bored tunnel connections.

If the past is the key to the future, we will have ?tough? times maintaining Industrial Mineral reserves we have and proving new reserves around our plants and in new locations. The tough times will come from resources being more difficult to find, more hoops to go thru to make them Proven or Probable reserves. As always, Industrial Minerals require competitive quality, location, and costs. Since in most cases the market has suppliers, you will have to take away customers from their present supplier. This may take years or not happen even with lower cost higher quality raw materials. To determine the finished cost for a new deposit you need to design, determine capital costs, and operating costs for a new plant . Stripping, mining, hauling, processing, and transportation costs are part of the equation. After satisfying that your costs are in line you will need to do production tests to make sure the process works on the ore. You may want to complete permitting before purchasing the property. If you are new in the business you will have to prove you can deliver the right quality, the right quantity, on time consistently year after year at lower cost to take away a customer. Without being in the market this will be hard. The cut off grades to enter a market may be much lower than sale indicates because a competitor often lowers the price to keep you out of the market. We have many more items to check before the new deposits can be put on reserves. Our old reserves will require drilling to check for new products and prove that they do not contain items that would make them unusable for our product line or cause permitting problems. Archeological checks, wetlands, more water discharge testing, county zoning, and endangered species are among many items that have been added to mine permits. There will be more. A 4-6 page mining permit becomes 30-300 pages and consists of 5-15 permits, any of which might be a fatal stumbling block. It is not guaranteed that we can mine what we have on reserves. We may fight and lose. Oil-Dri?s loss in Reno and LaPort?s in England are examples where permitting failed. The NOx, sulfur, and carbon problems are just starting. Dioxin is in the background requiring monitoring on food products to Europe. What other anions, cations, endangered species, and land types are going to be problems in the future are guesses now. What new products are we going to have to test for and cause out of balance reserves? If there are none we probably won?t be here. We are competing for land use with ?Endangered Species?, wetlands, farming, forestry, cities, roads, and hunting. We?ve mined the best quality, low overburden, easiest to mine and process raw materials. The price of land and taxes are increasing. Old royalties are 2-3 times the present acre value instead of 8-10 times the property value when leased. Land taxes are up. It was and is best that we get the land in Fee Simple Title. This isn?t always possible. However, plants are closing and people have overlooked, made mistakes in drilling or interpretation of deposits. These may be opportunities. China is eating up high quality ?Industrial Minerals ?which have caused prices to rise. We may need to change our cutoffs? in terms of smaller pit sizes and higher overburden ratios. This is money in the bank. Overburden ratios and other items increasing cutoff costs need to be rethought. Suddenly doubling cutoff ratios for overburden and decreasing pit sizes are good alternatives to looking elsewhere where we might not be able to mine for a number of reasons. The higher prices make them competitive, especially when a competitor goes out of business. However, our low overburden ratios and short hauls around our plants are not safe from new roads, condemnation by county or city governments (N. J.), zoning changes (Reno, FL., CA, and environmental regulation changes (Buffers GA, MS). New roads ?Interstates? can take reserves, increase hauling distances and reduce tons per load. Let?s combine the Refractories, fullers earth, and bentonite industries and use the last 40 years as a guide to the future looking for problems and opportunities. Some or most of the following will apply to other minerals. WHERE DO WE LOOK? First, on our own properties, those next to our properties and on properties near our competitor?s plants. Where the profit margin has increased, the distance from the plant and thickness of overburden we can use is increased. The thickness of clay is decreased. For new locations we pick the ideal location and look at deposits and closed or open operations in ever increasing distances away from that location. We need to be aware of: 1. Increased transportation costs a. Access to Roads -Backhauls b. Haul with doubles and triples c. Railroads - Loading on sidings - Ability to get switches - Cars/backhauls versus rates 2. Cost of building a new plant 3. Cost of infrastructure 4. Cost of repair or new equipment when purchasing an operating or shutdown plant. 5. Local, state, and federal mine and environmental permitting. When exploring around an established operation expect that property acquisition, drilling, mining, stripping, and hauling costs will be greater due to them having second, third, or even fourth the pick of the deposits. I found this in New Jersey looking for refractories and around Quincy, Florida looking for attapulgite. You may be able to get some better properties because the operating company has angered some land owners, their drillers missed the clay, or the property wasn?t available when they were actively exploring for reserves. 10.1-SHAFT SINKING AND RAISING BY CONVENTIONAL METHODS VICTOR L. STEVEN 10.1.1-SHAFT SELECTION A great deal of thought and planning should go into the selection of a mine shaft to provide the most effective use over the greatest, period of time. It sometimes is better to make an additional capital expenditure in the initial shaft program to achieve the greatest overall shaft usage. It is possible to sink a shaft which could be used for mine development, and initial production and later convert it to a ventilation, service or escape shaft. It is important to consider a second shaft in the original planning to provide ventilation, an escapeway and services for overall efficient production and safety. A second shaft usually is required to comply with state and federal mining laws. The main items to consider in shaft selection are: 1. Installation from surface or underground. 2. Vertical or inclined (sec Sec. 10.1.4L for discussion of factors involved in choice). 3. Tonnage to be hoisted. 4. Size of mining equipment to be lowered through the shaft to the underground workings. 5. Amount of water to be handled in the mining operation. 6. Ventilation requirements. 7. Type of ground the shaft is to be sunk through. 8. Position of shaft with relation to ore body. After the main features of a shaft arc determined, such as vertical or inclined, shape, size, type of lining and support, compartments, and shaft. facilities (air, water, ventilation, pump lines, power cahles, etc.), then :I sinking plant and procedures should be planned. At this point it should be decided whether the company will sink the shaft with its own crews or award the job to a competent shaft contractor. Company sinking generally will cost less if competent shaft men are available. Money also will be saved in plant costs, such as for hoist, headframe, compressed air, buildings, etc., as these will be part of the permanent plant and can be used in the sinking operation. Labor costs generally will be lower than contractor construction rates. The advantage of having a contract, or is the speed of completion of the project. Contractors usually have headframes and hoists ready to move on the job immediately and have trained crews ready to complete the project in the shortest possible time. Next, the type of surface sinking plant (hoist, headframe, etc.) should be selected and a determination made whether it is to be temporary or permanent. In most cases it is less expensive to install the permanent, headframe and hoist, and use them for sinking. The type of actual sinking equipment to be used should be evaluated for the most efficient sinking cycle, e.g., mucking method, drilling method, and lining or support means. The proper cycling of drilling, mucking and lining is extremely important in obtaining the most favourable sinking costs. 10.1.2 - GROUND STABILIZATION AND WATER CONTROL Prior to the shaft-sinking operation an investigation should be made into ground-water conditions. Introduction Occurrences of platinum group minerals (PGM) in mafic and ultramafic rocks in association with Cu-Ni mineralization are well known. Yet for the Duluth Complex, a large body of dominantly mafic igneous rocks in northeastern Minnesota with significant Cu-Ni mineralization (Bonnichsen, 1972; Boucher, 1975; Watowich, 1978; Weiblen and Morey, 1980), little has been published concerning its platinum group element (PGE) contents and mineralogy. In a previous study of massive sulfide rock, sperrylite (PtAs2) was found in nickel arsenide and recovery of arsenide minerals by flotation has been investigated (Iwasaki et al., 1986; Ryan and Weiblen, 1984). Recently, an announcement was made of the discovery of significant quantities of platinum and palladium [peak assay values of 9 g/t (0.27 oz per st)] in an interval of a drill core with disseminated sulfide mineralization 16 km (10 miles) southeast of Ely, MN (Anon, 1985; Sabelin, 1985). This paper describes PGM from the Pt-Pd-enriched zone and evaluates their potential for concentration. Geologic setting The Pt-Pd zone occurs in the South Kawishiwi in¬trusion near its basal contact at 734 to 737 m (2408 to 2418 ft) depth. The South Kawishiwi is one of several minor mafic intrusions that constitute the western margin of the Duluth Complex near Ely, MN (Fig. 1). It is com¬prised of a 70.1- to 350.5-m (230- to 1150-ft) thick sul¬fide-bearing basal unit of troctolite with minor amounts of anorthosite, norite, picrite, and oxide layers overlain by a troctolite unit with interlayered anorthosite (Bonnichsen et al., 1980; Foose, 1984; and Foose and Weiblen, 1986). The basal unit, in which the Pt-Pd zone is found, is markedly heterogeneous in rock type, lacking any coherent internal stratigraphy, and shows evidence of both pre- and post-consolidation faulting (Foose and Weiblen, 1986). Geochemistry Chemical analyses were made on 0.3-m (1-ft) intervals of crushed drill core material (1/4 core, BX size) at 731.5 to 740.7 m (2400 to 2430 ft) depth and the results are presented in Fig. 2. The analytical techniques used were atomic absorption spectrometry for silver, chromium, copper, and nickel; a coulometric titration method for sulfur; and a combined fire assay-DC plasma technique for gold, palladium, and platinum. Figure 2 shows the significant enrichment of platinum and palladium at 734 to 737 m (2408 to 2418 ft) depth; it corresponds to a stratigraphic interval rich in oxide minerals. Average values for platinum and palladium contents over the 3-m (10-ft) interval are 2520 and 2580 ppb, respectively, or 5.1 g/t (0.15 oz per st) platinum plus palladium. Platinum plus palladium contents from individual 0.3-m (1-ft) intervals are as high as 9120 ppb or 9.1 g/t (0.27 oz per st) and average 7.4 g/t (0.22 oz per st) in a 1.5-m (5-ft) interval in the richest part of the zone. The Pt-to-Pd ratio is nearly 1:1 over the entire 9.1-m (30-ft) interval and the platinum and palladium correlate closely with chromium, which ranges from 1.9% to 5.3%. Copper, nickel, and sulfur contents for the drill core interval are also given in Fig. 2. In¬terestingly, the Pt-Pd high corresponds to a depletion in copper, nickel, and sulfur. A quantitative estimation of the size distribution of rock fragments is extremely important in mining, metallurgy and other geotechnical fields. This paper presents a new approach to the analysis of fragmentation. The method combines the practicality of digital image processing of the rock surface with the theoretical volume calculations based on the principles and laws of fractal geometry. The final volumetric distribution curve is compared with the results from traditional sieving indicating close agreement.

Heap leaching requires containment and storage of cyanide solutions, the volume of which may increase dramatically following an extreme storm event or extended wet periods. This paper describes a computer operated solution storage model developed to assist in the management of these requirements. It results from the accumulative efforts of various Klohn Leonoff engineers working on a number of heap leach projects throughout the western United States for the past several years.

The U.S. Virgin Islands consist of three major islands (St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix) and some 50 smaller islands that are located primarily along the coasts of St. Thomas and St. John. St. Croix, the largest of the islands, is located approximately 160 km south-southeast of San Juan, Puerto Rico and is about 218 km in area (Fig. 1). St. Thomas, the second largest island is located 64 km east of Puerto Rico and incorporates approximately 77 km2. St. John is located immediately to the east of St. Thomas and incorporates approximately 49 km2. The climate in the U.S. Virgin Islands is maritime tropical. The average annual rainfall at higher elevations is 127-152 cm and at lower elevations 51-76 cm. There is no well-defined wet or dry season. Temperatures generally average in the 80's (F°) with only a 5°-7° F variation throughout the year.
