The Lower Olentangy Tunnel project includes 47,000 cubic yards of planned ground improvement for earth pressure balance machine (EPBM) tunneling (5.2 km) and microtunneling (335 m) in glacial soils. Jet grouting started in late 2021 and will continue through 2023 to complete operations at 5 shafts, 14 safe havens, 5 watermain ground improvement zones, and a river crossing. Typical jet grout columns are installed at depths between 15–24 meters. Discrete soil-cement blocks range from 267–8,900 cubic yards in volume. This paper discusses the methodology, testing, and technical considerations associated with jet grouting operations in glacial overburden across an urban environment.

In recent years, junior mining companies, mostly listed in Canada, have taken a beating in the finance markets. Simply put, potential investors have been leery of sinking millions into exploration and mining projects due to volatile commodities prices and an uncertain regulatory climate in developed and developing countries. The 2014 edition of the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC), however, seemed to be a bit different for some juniors. Equity valuations have improved and metals prices appear to be stabilizing. So, for some of the stronger junior companies, there is some hope. Merger and acquisition (M&A) activity is picking up and, believe it or not, companies are raising some capital. Billed as the largest annual mining meeting in North America, the PDAC conference attracted more than 25,000 mining and exploration professionals from around the world. Organizers were anticipating attendance to break the 30,000 mark. But, given the state of the exploration end of the mining business, 25,000 is still a respectable number. Junior companies that are in the project feasibility stage, or have made promising discoveries that stand a good chance of proceeding to production, are being looked at by potential investors. Those are the survivors of the last three years of dismal M&A activity. On the other side are the juniors that are still around ? and there are plenty of juniors that were at the PDAC last year but have since disappeared ? but have little or no working capital. One analyst calculated that there are about 850 companies with less than $200,000 in working capital and about 600 with negative working capital. This will likely result in fewer junior mining and exploration companies as the year progresses but the ones that remain should be stronger.

It is axiomatic that in designing a bulk material handling system the primary consideration is the functioning of the machines. The structure is secondary -its reasons for being are to support, enclose and provide access to the machine, for servicing. This results in a wide variety of supporting structures. Other considerations are: plant layout, local soil conditions, climate, local laws and codes, and last, but by no means least, the Customer's wishes.

The mining industry's image is molded by what the general public knows, or thinks they know about mining. As we prepared for the production of Caterpillar's educational film, Common Ground, we first had to find out exactly what the public perceptions about mining were. Before we could educate people about mining, we had to find out what they already thought. As we broke down those perceptions, we were able to narrow our focus to relevant, realistic approaches for the film. We found out what people didn't know about mining. And most importantly, we singled out the facts they should know... facts that could create more favorable attitudes. This research was instrumental in our final direction for the Common Ground project.

The Andacollo gold mine is located near the small town of Andacollo, Chile (population 14,000) in the fourth region. It is approximately 35 miles by paved road from the coastal city of La Serena, and Santiago lies about 300 miles to the south (see map.) Site elevation varies between 3300 feet and 4200 feet. The climate at the site is moderate but arid, with an average annual rainfall of only five inches. Because there is little rain, and the temperature varies only a few degrees (57"F to 75°F); there are no freezing, solution dilution, or pad saturation problems. The climatic conditions are ideal for heap leaching.

In this paper, we show that the methane emission and the dust generation in under-ground mining currently and in the future pose operational, health and safety conditions which adversely Impact face productivity and worker satisfaction. One solution is the use of a dual-aircourse system of ventilation. In this concept, one aircourse captures and exhausts to the surface the dust generated and the methane emitted in coal/mineral fragmentation while a second aircourse provides workers with cleaner air for breathing and comfort. Various dual-aircourse configurations adapted to the Variable Wall Miner are analyzed and compared with conventional mining in gassy seams, indicating a marked reduction in the required air quantity and the number of aircourses.

Although the Sagasca deposit has been known for 76 years, the property was never put into successful operation because of various adverse factors including low market price for copper, legal entanglements, unsuccessful financial arrangements, and an inadequate metallurgical process. Late in 1963, Continental Copper & Steel Industries, Inc., obtained legal control of this property. Since that time there has been a concentrated effort to complete the necessary mine appraisal, process development, and engineering design, and to solve the legal and financial problems to bring this property into production.

Lake Dufault Mines, Limited, is located ten miles north of Noranda, Quebec. Following discovery of a copper-zinc orebody late in 1961, metallurgical investigations of diamond drill core were conducted by Lakefield Research Limited during 1962 and 1963. These were followed by pilot-plant tests in May and June of 1964, utilizing underground development ore. Milling operations commenced on August 16, 1964, and reached rated capacity of 1,300 tons per day by October 1, 1964 (Figure 1). Since that time, tonnage was gradually increased to a maximum of 1,400 tons per day and since January 1, 1968, gradually decreased to the present rate of 1,100 tons per day due to an increase in the hardness of the ore. The ore milled from start-up until January, 1968, was mainly massive sulphides, consisting of a complex mixture of iron, copper, zinc and minor amounts of lead sulphides with important associated values in gold, silver and cadmium (aver- age specific gravity 3.8). From January, 1968, until the present, the ore being processed is described geologically as a boxwork of sulphide stringers of chalcopyrite, pyrite and pyrrhotite and some local dissemination in siliceous rhyolite (average specific gravity 2.9) supplemented by the massive copper-zinc ore. The limited size of the orebody and the mining method employed (open stoping by blasthole and slash and bench methods) would have made grade control from the mine difficult and expensive. It was decided to try to cope with grade variations in the mill. The resulting rapid and wide swings in mill heads, hardness and specific gravity have presented many and varied challenges for the mill personnel.

Central to Newmont Gold's Mine planning system is the ability to interactively perform cut and fill operations on topographic contours and to accurately evaluate grades and tonnages within contour outlines using polygon set manipulation routines. This paper develops the applied geometry concepts that underlie these routines. Included are representation of volumes with contours, point in polygon test, block proportion in polygon calculation, polygon area and centroid calculation, and intersection, union, and complement between polygon sets.

An experimental study was carried out to compare the results of laboratory column flotation versus conventional flotation for the cleaning of fine coals of different rank and their oxidized samples as well as discrete size fractions. Surface oxidation caused a significant reduction in the flotation yields achieved with both methods. However, the column flotation produced concentrates? of lower ash content. The recovery -size curve achieved with column was similar in shape to that obtained with conventional cell, with superior results in the region of fine fractions. The influence of some column operating parameters was also discussed.

In many instances, blasting exerts the dominant control over the economics and safety of excavation, where the materials involved are too hard and tough to be fragmented efficiently by other means. However, associated with the fragmentation process other effects very often result that are not desirable and may even be hazardous, such as fly rock, air blast, excessive overbreak, and damaging ground virbrations. It has always been the desire of those concerned with blasting to better control the forces involved so as to improve the breakage of materials, but at the same time reduce, or eliminate if possible, the unwanted side effects. Until the last decade or two, little was known of the phenomena concerned with blasting. However, since that time many investigators have studied blast mechanisms produced from both chemical and nuclear explosions, with the result that general concepts of the principles have been developed. But, in general, it is assumed that the energy from the explosion would be propagated spherically throughout the material, the latter of which for convenience of analyses is considered homogeneous and isotropic, i.e., the properties are the same in all directions, However, rocks are not isotropic as a rule, and evidence clearly indicates blasting forces rarely function uniformly or in spherical form as theorized.

Surface mining consists of the removal of the geologic strata overlying the coal seam usually with large electric shovels, draglines or bucket wheels. The method produces more or less parallel ridges or peaks of cast overburden, usually called "spoil banks". The mined lands vary widely in their inherent characteristics to produce a vegetative cover and thus can be put to a wide variety of uses. Use is the key to economic and social benefits. Physical and Chemical Characteristics of Soil Material of Surface Mined Lands after surface mining operations, the soil material is a heterogeneous mass whose physical and chemical properties are dominated by the character of the geologic strata overlying the coal. These strata are highly variable in thickness and character. They may include the surface soil, loess, glacial till, sands, shales, slates, limestone and sandstone rock. The method of mining with the several types of mining equipment will also affect the resultant mined area.

Rock strata, natural and mining-induced stresses, and structural features can combine to create dangerous instabilities in or around longwall panels. Rock noises and properties variations associated with local stress systems can be used to characterize developing instabilities. Through a learning process at a particular mine, guidelines can be developed to allow the determination of relative risk and timing of a potentially disastrous instability. Once a dangerous instability has been identified, operational modifications can be employed to get through the instability, or active measures such as destressing can be used to mitigate the instability. This paper will discuss how an integrated monitoring system and associated data processing can be used to develop a hazard prediction capability for a longwall mine.

Glenrock, WY is underlain by two abondoned coal mines. Subsidence events have been recorded over the years, with the frequency increasing in recent years. As part of Wyoming's Abondoned Wins Lands Program, investigations including mining history/methods/mappings, subsurface drilling and material site searches were performed. Portions of the mines less than eighty feet from the surface, were identified as probable for subsidence. Subsidence control by hydraulic backfill was selected. Design included search and injection boreholes, water supply from the mines and the slurry mixing, transport and injection system. Injection system performance and backfill success is king monitored during construction.

An automated method of microscopy for determining the pyrite size distribution on two base coals that were crushed to 28 mesh x 0 has been developed. Polished epoxy-bound coal pellets were prepared and examined by a Zeiss IBAS image analyzer utilizing a program developed from provided software. Pyrite size distribution determination is considered a necessary first step in pyrite characterization that could lead to successful predictions, by microscopy, of a coal's theoretical pyritic sulfur removal. Our research efforts to date have indicated that the IBP-S can be a reliable instrument for determining pyrite size distribution in crushed coal. A program was also developed to convert pyrite size data to a weight basis for comparisons to the results from chemical analyses. The problems encountered in our research and their solutions will be presented in the discussion.

The objective was to determine operating protocols for a lead and silver column flotation cleaner, being considered for installation at Sunshine Mining & Refining Co.'s Kellogg mill in Northern Idaho. In this column, tetrahedrite and galena were floated, and pyrite and other gangue minerals, including siderite and silica, were depressed. The procedure was to develop a dynamic simulation using a linear transfer function approach. The transfer function related cause and effect variables such as the influence of collector and depressant dosages on recovery and grades. Bench-scale flotation tests followed by pilot column testing provided the data used to develop a linear transfer function. The transfer function was derived using a spreadsheet. This model was applied to simulate how the flotation column could be made to respond to disturbances in feed grade. The results were that xanthate, zinc sulfate, and sodium cyanide were found to be suitable controls for grade and recovery. Simulations showed the best sequence of manipulations of these reagents, and these sequences were useful for future operator training. The conclusion was that linear transfer functions were able to simulate lead and silver recovery, develop scenarios for operator training, and provide a foundation for future on-line control.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION The undercut-and-fill method of mining was devel¬oped by Inco Ltd. in the Sudbury district of Ontario, Canada, to deal with abnormal ground conditions en¬countered in pillar recovery. Although it is now some¬times utilized as a primary stoping method, the main application continues to be in pillar recovery. In any mining method in which fill is employed, pillar systems tend to fail gradually as stoping pro¬gresses. As a result, most pillars are completely destressed and broken by the time pillar recovery com¬mences. Control of the back in such ground becomes a major problem and is contingent on local conditions as they exist in the workplace. In most mining methods, operations such as drilling, blasting, slushing, and tim¬bering can be readily assessed and the mining cycle pre¬dicted. However, in the mining of pillars with overhand methods, the time and effort required to maintain a safe back varies to a quite unpredictable extent. For years the square-set method was the most effective means available for pillar recovery. However, in areas where bad ground was encountered, square setting was a costly and sometimes hazardous method. As the tonnage mined from pillars increased, it was apparent that a safer and less expensive approach was required. Past experience indicated that the best way to deal with broken ground was to mine from the top down. Top slicing systems were examined but were rejected due to the major sub¬sidence which resulted. However, ideas generated from studying top slicing finally developed into the present method of undercut-and-fill. This method, which has almost completely replaced square-set mining, exhibits reduced costs, has improved safety and efficiency, elimi¬nates the factor of bad ground overhead, and allows a closer prediction of the actual mining cycle. The result is more accurate scheduling of pillar production. This factor is of increasing importance as the tonnage from pillar recovery increases in relation to total mine pro¬duction. Undercut-and-fill is a method of extracting a block of ore by mining successive cuts, working from the top down. After a cut of ore is completely mined out, lami¬nated timber stringers are constructed along the sides for the full length of the cut. Round logs covered by a wire screen are laid across the stringers to form a mat. The cut is then tightly filled with hydraulically placed cemented sand fill. Mining is then resumed on the cut immediately below the mat. As the cut advances, the timber stringers are supported by round timber posts seated on the solid bottom of the cut. Drilling, blasting, muck removal, and timbering operations are repeated until all the ore in the cut has been removed. At this time, another log mat is laid and the cut is filled. This sequence is continued until the block has been mined from level to level. The basic principles of undercut-and-fill can be adapted to a variety of mining situations. It can be applied transversely or longitudinally in ore bodies of varying width, that dip from vertical to flat lying. The method can be applied using conventional equipment or it can be mechanized through the introduction of small diesel or air-powered units for muck removal. Undercut¬and-fill is a selective method, ore recovery is high, and dilution can be controlled to an acceptable level. How¬ever, it is a high-cost, labor-intensive method and as such its use is restricted to areas where the less costly meth¬ods of ground support are not successful or where bulk mining methods are not adaptable. One basic require¬ment for undercut-and-fill is an adequate source of hydraulically placed cemented sand fill and a dependable sand plant and distribution system. The success of the undercut method is to a large degree dependent on the competence of the fill placed in each of the successive cuts. In theory, the weight of the fill on each cut is supported in part by the cemented sand itself as it binds to the rough sides of the mined¬out areas next to the pillar walls, and in part by the tim¬ber support. As mining progresses beneath the mat, a downward pressure is exerted within the cemented fill and a voussoir arch develops above the mat, across the full width of the cut. This supports the major portion of the load. The log mat and posts have a double func¬tion in that they carry the remaining weight not sup¬ported by the voussoir arch and in addition prevent any pronounced settling of the fill mass. Excessive settling breaks the bond between the cemented fill and the pillar walls, eliminating the arch effect and transferring the entire load to the mat and posts. The theory of a voussoir arch forming within the cemented sand fill mass is substantiated in practice by the fact that pillars have been mined from level to level with no more significant weight on the bottom cuts than was experienced on the top cuts. In effect, as mining progresses downward, there is no additional transfer of weight from previous cuts to the cut being mined. APPLICATION OF UNDERCUT-AND-FILL Because of their size, the Sudbury ore bodies are, for the most part, mined transversely and, to a considerable extent, by filling methods. Transverse stoping blocks are designed with 9-m (30-ft) crown pillars established be¬low each level and with stopes separated by vertical rib pillars. In past years, floor pillars were left above the level as well, but present practice favors the silling of primary stopes at the base of the rail. Rib pillars are designed to meet the ground control requirements of the primary stoping methods. Local conditions and past experience generally dictate their size. Historically, since the square-set method was to be used for recovery, rib pillars were designed to accommo¬date standard 1.7-m (5'h-ft) sets. A typical rib pillar is four sets wide [6.7 m (22 ft)] when located between two square-set or cut-and-fill stopes having a width of 8.4 m (27.5 ft). In Colombia, more than 15 regions and around 100 municipalities develop gold mining at different scales, and these operations generate mining waste composed of processing fluids and crushed rock with metals and high silica content. Cement production requires clinker, gypsum and other corrective additives. Clinker results from the partial fusion of some minerals including silica. In this study is proposed to evaluate the effect of the use of mining tailings sands from gold mining in the manufacture of clinker. The proposed methodology will allow the characterization of the sands to manufacture a cement specimen and measure its physical and fire properties

"Surface settlement adjacent to sensitive structures is a challenging issue in the tunnel engineering. In this study, 3D simulation of TBM excavation has been performed with the FLAC3D code and then the results compared with real monitoring data. Sensitivity analysis was carried out for all parameters affecting the surface settlement, such as the tail void grouting pressure (Pt), the face pressure (Pf), the tunnel diameter (D), overburden (q), shield thickness (t) and the length of the shield (L). The results show that the face pressure, tail void grouting and tunnel diameter have a considerable effect on the maximum ground displacement.In this paper, the monitoring data from Mashhad Metro was used to verify the numerical simulation. Data monitoring for about 47 sections between A2 and D2 stations was selected and a multiple regression analysis was performed. Based on this analysis, an empirical relationship was obtained for the coefficient of regression relationship which confirmed the sensitivity analysis.INTRODUCTIONThe surface settlement due to tunnel excavation is a complex issue, since the surface displacement is a function of several parameters that they are related to the excavation method, soil characteristics and TBM elements. Prediction of deformation is a very important issue, especially in urban areas, since these displacements may be affected the superficial structures. In recent studies, one of the most popular empirical relationships that is used to predict the surface displacement has gussian curve that it was suggested by Peck [1, 2]. An analytical relationship was proposed by Chow that its base assume was isotropic of soil, that surface settlement can be estimated based on the tunnel geometry and the shear modulus(G) [3]. Besides these methods numerical approaches such as the Finite Element Method (FEM) and the Finite Difference Method (FDM) have been used over the last twenty years, since numerical modeling has a high capability to simulation a complex soil conditions and irregular geometry [4]. In this study, all aspects of the EPB-TBM on Mashad Metro Line 2 were modeled and the most important influences on surface displacement in urban areas were determined [1, 3]."
