Many of the major international gold mining companies provide data on rates of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions as part of their environmental reporting commitments. These data are evaluated by an index defined as the annual GHG emission rate in metric tons, divided by the annual amount of gold produced in grams, and referred to as GHGgold. This paper examines ranges of GHGgold values for a cross section of gold mines as a function of mining method (openpit, underground and combined operation) and ore-processing method (mill, heap leach and combined methods) for reported ranges of operational data, including annual total tons mined, ore processed and gold grade. The evaluation shows that ranges and distributions of rates of GHG emission are approximately similar across different mining methods and ore-processing methods. The data presented in this paper provide the context needed to make comparisons of GHG emissions reported in companies’ annual reports to the ranges reported for the overall gold mining industry.

Organisms living at hydrothermal vents are adapted to catastrophic disturbances in their environment caused by processes such as tectonic activity and mineralization that shift the locus of fluid flux and volcanic eruptions that pave over active systems and reset the hydrothermal cycle. The scientific community appreciates this risk of natural, local loss of species, genetic, and habitat diversity. The risks of more profound loss of diversity and ecosystem function and health as a consequence of additive commercial activities in hydrothermal systems are unknown, and are not the same across all deep-sea hydrothermal systems. Vent communities differ from one ocean basin to another, as do the geological settings and geochemical dynamics of vent systems. Communities on the East Pacific Rise represent one end-member in the catalog of hydrothermal vent communities. In these systems, the life cycle of a hydrothermal field is on approximately the same time scale as the lifespan of the species that live there. From studies of the 1991 and subsequent eruptions at 9N on the East Pacific Rise, we understand the rapidity with which new vents are colonized when nearby brood stocks are available to repopulate the system. Almost instantaneously, microbial biofilms and mats form, followed quickly by invasion of mobile opportunistic organisms (especially crabs, copepods). In a matter of a few months, a predictable succession of sessile organisms recruits, grows, and reproduces. Within two to three years, the system returns to levels of species diversity that begin to match those of the pre-eruption condition. Vents on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) represent a different end-member, with catastrophic disturbance rare relative to the life span of the organisms that make up the bulk of the biomass. We have no experience with an eruptive event or other major transformation of venting activity on the MAR and thus have no knowledge or insight regarding the time it would take for the biological diversity to return to pre-cataclysmic levels.

Investigation and uptake of filtered tailings continues to grow throughout the globe. This is driven by a wide range of site-specific considerations, which include such factors as tailings characteristics (e.g., amenability to filtration), production rates, climate, water availability, cost drivers, environmental requirements, and social factors. Despite the aforementioned technological growth, the currently available filtration technology is not able to meet the needs of many operations and projects that would otherwise adopt the technology. Experience with large-scale industrial filtration shows that vacuum belt filter systems meet the needs of many modern users, exceptions being the inability to effectively dewater tailings at altitude and/or with a fine particle size distribution: a potential fatal flaw. This paper presents a case study on the utilization of the patented Viper Filtration technology on gold tailings to overcome this challenge and shares the resultant full-scale plant design, highlighting the features designed to overcome cost and scalability deterrents. This technology is a novel mechanical process which complements the vacuum pressure in dewatering the filter cake as it travels along the belt filter. This project commenced with a pilot testing program, which successfully met the objective to rigorously test, measure and record any performance improvements achieved when engaging the Viper technology. Of the two tailings products tested, gross improvements of 4.2%w/w and 5.7%w/w were achieved when compared to the conventional vacuum belt filter operation. This pilot testing facilitated measurement of operating and design data, which forms the basis of the full-scale system design and resultant equipment supply of three vibration roller assemblies for retro-fitting on the existing vacuum belt filter.

A compact 4.87 m (16 ft) diameter tunnel boring machine (TBM) is capable of boring a 12.2 m (40 ft) radius curve while gripping horizontally, or vertically, as may be required for the excavation of turnouts. The machine's 5.0 m (16.5 ft) length and a patented machine structure allows steering while boring without causing harmful eccentric loads. An extremely stiff thrust system, rigid front and rear grippers, and the torsional stiffness of a front end electric cutterhead drive combine to create superior machine stability and boring efficiency. A 2.2 m (7.2 ft) diameter prototype, complete with a soft ground shield attachment, was used successfully on a tunnel project in Scotland.

Within ten to fifteen years, coal-fired power generating stations will be producing over 40 million tons of coal-ash annually in the United States. The largest part of this ash will be emitted from the boilers, entrained in the off-gas stream and trapped as flyash. However, about 15 percent (six million tons) will he removed from furnace bottoms as bottom ash or molten coal-ash slag. In current practice, the molten coal-ash slap is generally water quenched and then transported either as a slurry or in granular form to storage or disposal areas. Although a small amount of this slag is marketed as abrasive grit or as roofing granules, most of it is considered a waste material which must be disposed of at considerable cost to the power companies and therefore to the public. The accom¬panying economic loss in terms of unused raw materials and displaced land is not as obvious but is just as real. The Coal Research Bureau at West Virginia University under the sponsorship of the U. S. Bureau of Mines has been examining the possible utilization of both coal-ash slag and flyash in the mineral wool industry as a method of partially alleviating the growing national problem of solid waste disposal. The potential marketing situation for mineral wool manufactured from coal-ash is illustrated in Figure 1. This bar graph depicts the growth in value of mineral wool shipments1 from 1949 through 1966. In this 17-year period, the value in¬creased by over 350 percent, more than 20 percent per year, despite a decrease in unit cost of mineral wool. It therefore appears likely that coal-ash could find a steady market as a supplement to existing sources of raw materials for mineral wool production.

"Mineral deposits require substantial amounts of energy to transport and be processed into usable form and, as such, present a real processing challenge in that the deposits are never homogeneous and orebody compositional characteristics are all over the map. Extracting the desired mineral(s) from the deposit at sufficient profit margin, despite severe fluctuations in market price, requires process automation architecture capable of supporting an integrated enterprise solution. Such an architecture will encompasses the activities of individuals, process units, process areas, plant level activities, mine management and business planning, and accounting systems. Key to the automation process is the aspect of value generation. This article brings together the various requirements for the automation of a mining enterprise and presents the different aspects of how to obtain value across the entire mining operation.Minerals’ processing sites are historically long lived, with 20-year life-of-mine not uncommon and 75 years not unheard of. Considering that hardware technology advancements are introduced every six months, or less, it is prudent to select process automation systems that adhere to “open” industrial standards versus proprietary based systems. In the minerals processing industry, the key to survival is driving the cost of production per unit volume to the lowest possible level and provide enough profit to sustain operations. Control system architecture and business information technology are rapidly becoming important tools in the quest for productivity. Getting key dynamic business performance information at the right time to the right person or process unit is crucial to successfully achieving corporate goals. The process automation architecture selected must, therefore, be able to integrate to the various networking enterprises and business systems.The mining industry is generally known as an extractive industry that is physically oriented with respect to operations and the activities in which workers engage. Large numbers of people performing manual tasks in difficult surroundings, produce variable outputs. But times are changing – and so are industry best practices. While the nature of work still consists of activities such as ore extraction, ore movement, ore concentration, refinement and logistics, automation innovations are starting to change the nature of many of the production steps. The industry has transitioned from requiring more physical activities by workers to more information management, automated control and collaboration within the operation. Humans are good at situational intervention and nonlinear reasoning and do best when empowered with an overall production perspective. Machines and automation are good at repetitive functions, steady state operation, and managing transitions. Thus, a combination of advanced technology solutions, reliable and useful information and full human contributions are necessary to mining operations for value generation."

The Rochester Mining District is located some twenty-five miles NE of Lovelock, Nevada. The District was discovered and named in the 1860's by prospectors from Rochester, New York. For a number of years, they worked Rochester Canyon, sinking shafts and inclines and making open cuts. After reaching a depth of approximately eighty feet, the miners tapped an underground channel and were driven from these workings by a strong flow of water leaving pumps in the shaft and barely escaping with their lives. With the Rochester workings no longer accessible, the miners went to the southeast and established the Relief Mining District. About 1881, gold was found in the gravel at the mouth of American Canyon, to the east of Rochester. These placers were worked until 1895, first by the Americans who reportedly took out $1 000 000, and later by the Chinese who mined the gravel with great skill. It was estimated that the Chinese took out as much as $10 000 000.

Mining operations adopt a variety of measures to combat dust underground. These include ventilation systems, water sprays, physical barriers, and personal protective equipment (PPE). Respirators are a class of PPE that can provide clean particulate- free air to the users. Powered Air-Purifying Respirators (PAPRs), used commonly in medical and other sectors, are not prevalent in the mining industry. PAPRs use P100 filters that have 99.97% dust capture efficiency. We present our results from computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations performed to understand the impact of a PAPR on airflow and dust particle concentration in the vicinity of a miner. These results show that donning PAPRs can lower the miners’ exposure to respirable coal dust in their workplace.

"Acid rock drainage (ARD) is produced when sulfides are exposed to oxygen and water. Oxidation reactions typically result in a depression of pH and leaching of solutes and metals. Many oxidation models have been developed based on oxygen diffusion, but in environments with high permeability, other transport processes (i.e., convection and advection) can play an important role. Multiple sulfide mineral phases with differing oxidation rates should also be incorporated. WROC, a finite-difference model, was developed to account for these factors in predicting ARD. The program includes sulfide mineral oxidation using a shrinking core mechanism, heat transfer by conduction, heat of reaction and oxygen transport by diffusion and advection. The model was validated using data from the literature. After validation, the WROC model was used to simulate several different waste rock scenarios, including different forms of sulfide mineralization and the effect of implementing a waste rock cover. The results demonstrate that including specific sulfide mineral phases can have a significant effect on oxidation and that implementation of a cover can also aid in reducing waste rock oxidation.IntroductionAcid rock drainage (ARD) is a notable environmental concern in areas where rock or other material with acid generation potential is disturbed. ARD is defined as drainage that occurs as a result of sulfide oxidation in rock exposed to air and water. ARD is characterized by low pH, elevated metals concentration (especially aluminum, iron and manganese), sulfate and high total dissolved solids. The low-pH water that results from acid generation is capable of solubilizing heavy metals contained within the rock. The principal sulfide mineral in mine wastes is pyrite (FeS2). Pyrite oxidation is complex and can involve chemical and biological reactions. Oxidation of pyrite by atmospheric oxygen produces one mole of Fe2+, two moles of SO4 2- and two moles of H+ for every mole of pyrite oxidized, as described by Eq. (1)."

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Office of Mine Safety and Health, Ground Control Engineering Branch is investigating the use of shotcrete in weak rock mass mines with the objective of reducing fatalities and injuries resulting from rock fall accidents. When shotcrete is used as part of a multielement ground support system, there is a need to know the support characteristics that the shotcrete contributes to the overall system. To quantify the support provided by the shotcrete, flexural strength tests were conducted with two common, commercially available fiber-reinforced shotcrete (FRS) mixes using the round determinant panel (RDP) test method, ASTM C 1550. A portable RDP test machine developed by NIOSH researchers was used to determine the peak flexural load and residual load capacity for a steel FRS and a synthetic poly FRS that were sprayed using dry mix procedures and equipment. Besides the flexural strength and loading behavior determined from these tests, a method was also developed for measuring the width of cracks exposed on the underside of a shotcrete panel during a RDP test and relating these measurements to residual load values. Quantifying the peak flexural load and residual loads of a shotcrete mix through on site testing at a mine and visually assessing the loading cycle and load-carrying capability of the shotcrete applied to underground workings will improve mine safety by providing a better assessment of the stability of shotcrete supported entries.

Large language models (LLMs) have generated a lot of hype since ChatGPT was released in early 2023. In essence, they allow people to interact with computer systems through natural language and have the ability to generate highly complex text, images and videos (Patil and Gudivada, 2024). It is clear that this technology has significant potential, however most mining companies have not yet found practical applications for it within their operations. In this paper, we present a range of such applications along with the tactical considerations associated with developing and implementing them. We have identified use cases across a variety of operational and functional areas within the mining industry and evaluated them based on their potential business value and ease of implementation. Firstly, we provide an overview of how LLMs work and a review of how LLMs are being applied in other industries to provide best practice inspiration for mining. Next, we present a list of possible applications in mining and a critical assessment of each use case. This section also includes a technical deep dive into the different methodologies for developing the technologies as well as an analysis of barriers to adoption within mining organizations. Finally, we share a discussion of the potential path forward for LLMs in mining and the impact they could have on the industry. We analyze the potential differences between early adopters and laggards in the artificial intelligence (AI) space. This research draws on interviews and surveys with artificial intelligence experts as well as mining subject matter experts to connect cutting edge thought leadership with the specific problems faced by our industry.

Installation of a Load Commutated Inverter (LCI) provides an economical method for conversion of a Fixed Speed Semi-Autogenous Grinding Mill into one with variable speed, qualities. Though capital intensive, the conversion appears to be one of the most cost-effective methods to gain the advantage of critical speed variations for variable ore characteristics. Expected advantages from the installation of LCI drives at the Goldstrike Mine were decreased liner wear, decreased media consumption and additional grind for increased production rates. These issues as well as construction, economics and performance will be discussed in the presentation. The utilization of the existing equipment came to play an integral part of the study and economic justification of the overall project.

The use of mining tailings-based geopolymer binder as a substitute for cement can be an interesting alternative to the problem of final disposing of large volumes of them. Indeed, mining tailings have a high silica content, which makes them suitable for geopolymerization. The tailings samples contain Cu, Pb, Zn, As, Sb, Cd and Bi, mainly. X-ray diffraction results show that the tailings are composed of quartz, SiO2 (81%). Geopolymerized tailing samples (GTPS) were obtained by varying the ratio of SiO2/ Al2O3 and SiO2/NaOH. The compressive strength of the GTPS varied between 2 MPa and 8 MPa. The electrical conductivity in the leaching tests varies between 13.91– 16.11 mS/cm2 indicating that ions are present in the solution. However, the pH = 10.5 indicates that acidity is not being generated. The element that mostly leaches is iron. The highest percentage of leaching is observed for cadmium (69%) and chromium (93%). The concentrations of elements are under the maximum permissible limits for water according to the Peruvian legislation. However, mass transfer leach tests and immersion leach tests must be realized.

Oxidized coals are difficult to float. Therefore, in this paper, a special flotation procedure was investigated for upgrading this type of coal. The procedure is called direct contact flotation. It relies on mixing dry coal either with pure (anhydrous) flotation reagent(s) or microemulsion. By applying the new direct contact flotation procedure, a coal yield reaching > 95% using anhydrous flotation reagents was achieved, but with relatively high consumption of reagents (up to 30 g/kg). This high reagent consumption may be attributed to the fines included in the flotation feed (100% less than 0.5 mm, with 40% less than 75 µm). On the other hand, the clean coal yield was found to be approximately 88% when mixing dry oxidized coal with microemulsion droplets from dodecane and dodecyl tetra (ethylene glycol) ether (C12E4) in water at a total reagent dosage of 10 g/kg. The direct contact of coal either with unhydrous reagents or microemulsion also provided a high flotation selectivity.

The preparation of coal-water slurry fuel (CWSF) has the potential to be a commercially viable technology for the coal industry. The technology base required to prepare stable CWSF using grinding circuits has been developed over the past decade and is now being applied to the preparation of CWSF from wet coal fines which are generated during coal beneficiation. When preparing CWSF, the optimum CWSF formulation must be determined to ensure that the fuel will be stable while having acceptable atomization and combustion properties, and the production run must be monitored closely to ensure that the CWSF quality is maintained. This paper describes the CWSF formulation process, CWSF preparation circuits, and some of typical problems encountered in, and solutions to, the transportation and storage of CWSF.

According to statistical theory, the geostatistical methods of ore reserves estimation are greatly superior to any other method. However acceptance of geostatistics by the mining industry has been slow and not as wide spread as one would expect. One of the reasons for this cautious approach is that it is often questioned whether the geo- statistical assumptions are satisfied in real world situations. When blocks of ore are estimated in a mineral deposit, geostatistical theory can be used to determine which method of estimation should give the best results. Using this theory, the relationship between estimated value and true block value can be quantified. There is a need to verify that this theoretical relationship is actually observed in practice, and that the block estimates ' obtained using the theoretical ly best method of estimation, are actually most similar to the true block values. In this paper the results expected according to the theory are compared with the results actually obtained. Sample values from a large bedded gold deposit have been used. Blocks of ore have been estimated by a number of methods, including the polygone, inverse power of the distance, kriging, logarithmic kriging and other geostatistical methods. The block estimates have been calculated from samples on a large grid, and compared with the true block values obtained from additional samples on a much smaller grid. The results of this comparison show extremely good agreement between theory and actual results.

8.1 INTRODUCTION Under room and pillar mining if the extraction ratio is low, (i.e., < 50%) a pillar can support the overburden without collapse and there will be no surface subsidence whatsoever. In other words, if the pillar sizes are properly determined to support the overburden weight, the roof strata cannot cave and there will be no surface subsidence, provided the entry width is small and properly reinforced so that a continuous roof fall leading to piping or the total collapse of the roof does not occur. Under the prevailing mining conditions in the US if only development mining is em¬ployed in room and pillar mining (i.e., no pillar extraction), the extraction ratio is usually less than 50% and generally no surface subsidence will occur. If pillar mining is employed, surface subsidence may occur, depending on the extraction ratio and the size of the remnant pillars (or stumps) left in the gob. The higher the extraction ratio, the smaller the stump pillars left behind in the gob. As the size of the stump pillars becomes smaller, the possibility of their support¬ing the roof without collapse is smaller. If all stumps are crushed completely, the roof will collapse and surface subsidence will occur. Again, whether surface subsidence occurs, it depends on whether the remaining stumps can support the overburden or not. Therefore, since the weight of the overburden which the stump pillars have to support is proportional to the mining depth, a fixed¬size stump pillar can support the overburden at a shallow depth, but will collapse under greater depths. In this context extraction ratio is not the only parameter for determining whether surface subsidence will occur. Furthermore, during pillar mining a pillar can be cut away in many ways to finally reach the same extraction ratio. Therefore, the safest way to determine whether or not sur¬face subsidence will occur in room and pillar mining is to compare the strength of all stump pillars in the panel of interest with the weight of the overburden that the pillars have to support. If they are too small to support the overburden, surface subsidence will occur. Under normal mining practices the characteristics of surface subsidence profiles vary with methods of mining. In the US there are two types of coal mining methods, i.e., longwall and room and pillar mining. Longwall mining is indisputably a total extraction method, but different percentages of coal recovery are achieved in room and pillar mining. Recovery is much higher for sections with pillar extraction than those without pillar extraction. For those without pillar extraction, coal recovery increases with increasing entry width or decreasing pillar size. For those with pillar extrac¬tion, the total coal recovery depends on the amount of coal ex¬tracted from each pillar which is in turn dependent on the roof conditions and methods of pillar extraction. Bauer and Hunt (1981) analyzed the characteristics of the subsidence profiles due to the three types of mining methods in Illinois. Fig. 8.1 shows the range of locations associated with the following profile features: profile edge, maximum tensile curvature, maximum slope, maxi¬mum compressive curvature, and maximum subsidence. The scat¬ter of the data increases with decreasing percentages of extraction. The profile is much sharper for longwall mining and becomes milder as percentage of extraction decreases; for longwall mining the profile edge is always beyond the opening, while in room and pillar mining it may fall within. The location of maximum tensile strain moves outward, while that of the maximum compressive strain moves inward as the percentage of extraction decreases and the maximum subsidence decreases with decreasing extraction ra¬tio. The general concepts discussed in this chapter may not apply to the entry development sections between two longwall panels where roof caving in both panels are very severe and overlap each other. Consequently, it must be treated differently. 8.2 CASE STUDIES Kohli et al. (1982) described several case studies on surface subsidence due to room and pillar mining with pillar extraction. In one case, the seam was 6 ft thick and ranged from 650 to 800 ft deep. The panel was 720 ft wide (Fig. 8.2) and was developed with seven entries. Each entry was 18 ft wide and the pillars were driven at 88 ft center-to-center between entries and crosscuts. Dur¬ing retreating, two additional pillars (pillars J and K) were devel¬oped, two blocks ahead of the pillar line, to take the barrier pillar, 160 ft wide, between panel No. I and No. 2. Pillar extraction began by taking a central slice across the whole panel, beginning from pillar 0 through J. After that, each pillar was sliced by 6 wing-slices, 3 on each side, leaving 4 stumps, 2 on each side. One of each pair was triangular shaped approximately 6 ft wide by 26 ft long. The other was trapezoidal, 26 ft long by 16 ft and 10 ft wide at the upper and lower bases, respectively. This resulted in a total extraction ratio of 85% within the panel. Obviously the stump pillars were not large enough to support the overburden and col¬lapsed completely. The final subsidence profiles were rather smooth, just like those under total extraction (Fig. 8.3). The max¬imum subsidence on Lines A and B was about 3 ft for an average mining height of 6 ft, but the locations of the maximum subsidence were skewed toward panel No. 1. Along Line D, the central por¬tion was flat-bottomed, but the maximum subsidence was only 2 ft, mainly because Line D was only two blocks from the right-side edge. Notice in every profile there was heaving of as much as 0.3 ft, beyond the edges above the solid coal. In another case (Fig. 8.4), the seam was 6 ft thick under 650 to 850 ft cover. Three panels, 710, 400, and 350 ft wide, respec¬tively, were extracted side by side. The entries were 18 ft wide and the pillars at 88 ft center-to-center between entries and crosscuts. Pillar extraction was practiced the same way as described previ¬ously. According to the mine maps, there was no barrier pillar left between the adjacent panels. Thus after extraction the three panels formed a common gob of more than 1460 ft wide. This was re¬flected in the development of the subsidence profile along the county road. After Panel No. I was mined, the maximum subsi¬dence of 1.2 ft occurred at Monument No. 1. This was increased to 1.6 ft after the extraction of Panel No. 2 and went to a further 1.8 ft after the extraction of Panel No. 3. The final maximum subsidence of 4.3 ft occurred at Monuments No. 6 through No. 8, while the remaining portion of the county road showed rebound. However it must be noted that the subsidence profiles were rather bumpy and fluctuated, perhaps an indication of the irregular stump pillars that were left and crushed at various time after mining. INTRODUCTION During the nineteenth century, the federal mining law was enacted with the objective of promoting the development of the western United States by providing unrestricted access to vast areas of federal land for mineral exploration. Prior to the advent of comprehensive federal, state and local land use plans, there was little, if any, regulation or restriction of mineral exploration activities. Today, the laissez-faire policies of the past that encouraged mineral exploration have gradually given way to the public&apos;s legitimate concerns regarding environmental protection, multiple use and planned land development. As a result, the contemporary prospector confronts a maze of statutes, ordinances and regulations with which he must comply to obtain the requisite approvals and permits before commencing mineral exploration on federal, state or private lands. This presentation will provide a broad overview of the exploration permitting process. The first section of this paper recommends certain general management practices to follow when attempting to obtain exploration permits. The second section presents two hypothetical cases, one involving a drilling program on private property in California and the other involving a drilling program and the removal of a bulk sample for metallurgical tests from federal land in Nevada. The cases are used to discuss jurisdictional issues and application of certain federal, state and county laws and regulations that pertain to mineral exploration. The final section contains a brief analysis of three important recent United States Supreme Court decisions. These decisions address the scope of the federal pre-emption doctrine as it applies to activities conducted on unpatented mining claims and the constitutional limits of permissible state and local land use and zoning regulations. The Parallel Thimble Shoal Tunnel project involves the construction of a bored tunnel under Thimble Shoal Channel in Chesapeake Bay (VA), between two artificial islands and parallel to the existing tube tunnel, built in the sixties. It will be the first transportation tunnel constructed in the Mid-Atlantic region using a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), a 44-foot-diameter Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) named "Chessie," manufactured by Herrenknecht, and which was assembled at the CBBT's southernmost island, with extremely limited room, live adjacent traffic, and difficult access. "Chessie" was successfully launched in February 2023 and this paper describes this complex and challenging process.

The phosphate mining industry is a highly competitive one, one in which survival depends on the plant&apos;s ability to produce at costs equal to, or below, the competition. The solution toward getting costs down is usually one of scaling up the plants to get the most tons through at the lowest possible cost. Control of these plants has been an art. Few of them are well instrumented because until a few years ago reliable instrumentation was non-existent. International Minerals and Chemical Corporation was a pioneer in applying computer techniques to ore reserves analysis and mine planning and the success in these areas led to the question of whether we could not extend the advantages of computer processing into the plant itself. There was a great deal of doubt on the operator&apos;s end that this could be done successfully because of the lack of instrumentation and the fact that plant control was largely an art that was learned only after many years of experience. However, in 1965 the instrumentation picture began to look up and the new generation of process computers just coming on the market were considerably lower in cost than the previous ones. A preliminary study of the installation costs and the probable benefits that could be realized from computer control convinced us that a process control computer should be seriously considered for a new phosphate mining plant which was being designed.
