Mining is essentially a materials management process where materials are classified, excavated, moved to a desired location, processed at a cost and sold for a price hopefully to generate a profit. ?How much is that cost and can it be reduced?? is the age-old question. The requirement for a paradigm shift with regard to materials movement in search of low-cost production has not just happened by chance but, rather, has been driven by agents of change that include mining companies, consultants, governments and equipment suppliers. During the past 100 years of mining, surface mining technology has involved humans with hand tools, humans with machinery and unmanned automated equipment. In the past 50 years, surface mining technology has evolved and now takes the form of trucks and loaders (TL), in-pit-crushing conveying (IPCC) and autonomous haulage equipment (AHS).

Real-time operational excellence is achieved through the seamless integration of various components. Key aspects include precise instrumentation, real-time data collection, data analytics, and an efficient optimization platform. Additionally, to ensure success, the real-time optimization platform must be incorporated into the site’s internal process control system (Nunez, 2022). This paper provides an overview of practical lessons and best practices for autogenous (AG), semi-autogenous (SAG), and ball mill (BM) grinding. It highlights the implementation of advanced instrumentation, specifically vibration sensors on the rotating mill shell. The paper also delves into the application of advanced analytics necessary for generating new measurements that accurately represent real-time grinding activity in the mill. These Advanced Analytics Measurements (AAM) are compared with well-known grinding curves to determine the optimal grinding point. The discussion focuses on key industry opportunities using real-time mill shell vibration results to derive new correlations and optimize the grinding process.

Virtually all structures show some signs of distress due to deterioration of the building components, to changed loads, or to changed support conditions. Changed support conditions result from ground movements. In mining regions many cases of structural distress are attributed to mining without considering alternative causes. This is particularly true of coal mining since it occurs under extensive areas. Coal mining is estimated to have already undermined more than eight million acres and may eventually undermine 40 million acres in the United States (HRB Singer, Inc., 1977). Other nonmetal and metal underground mines impact much smaller areas. Although it is sometimes difficult, even with careful study, to identify the actual cause of damage, persons responsible for underground coal mining should at least be aware of possible causes of building stress other than mine subsidence. This paper presents information on distress to structures and briefly reviews a number of causes of ground movements other than subsidence: Mass movements, dissolution, erosion, frost action, shrinking and swelling, yield into excavations and compressibility

"The impact of mine closure is perceived through a veil of compliance to human laws and regulations rather than the laws and equilibrium of nature. This perception motivates present research. Understanding the causes and effects of mine closure defines levels of responsibility. This understanding evolves from mine closure's legacy. Mine closure is characterized in perpetuity by three aspects: Future liabilities; level of technologies for extraction and, usage of mineral resources. These aspects must be updated to a rationally appropriate level. This paper will address the following questions: Will the minerals remaining in the process of mine closure ever be recovered? Will the mine closure inhibit the availability of minerals for the next generation? How many mines are designed to perform a successful mine closure? Do we close the mines or do we close nature? Is it responsible to continue mine closures as we do them today? Is mine closure a complement of mine operations or a contradiction of mining? Do we need to perform mine closures, yet? This paper reviews mine closure practices and principles with the level of responsibility to nature and for the next generation.PREFACE The planet has irreversible issues to deal with regarding the depletion of mineral resources and contamination occurring from human activities. The population increased exponentially to more than seven billion, this high population with its lifestyles, demands a higher supply of minerals. In spite of these conditions, mining is a vital industry to keep ""civilization"" in society. This is evidenced by what we see around us, in that everything ""made"" in society is directly or indirectly due to mining. Hence, mining cannot be avoided or ignored. Society misunderstands the importance of mining in relation to other activities. At this time, mining is fragmented and economically oriented to supply cheap minerals to a market with peculiar characteristics regarding products that could be designed for recycling and stimulate nature’s equilibrium. These issues add important “variable factors” to the equation, when they are considered as parameters for the next generation. It also raises many questions regarding principles and attitudes about morals and ethics exercised in all anthropogenic activities. The industry's practices have many flourishing paradigms which are subject to a variety of criticisms and observations. Some of these observations will be described in this paper. It is important to clarify in advance a ""normal disclaimer"" about the ""apparent contradiction"" that could take place in the writer's comprehension when we abruptly ""jump to conclusions"". We must remember that we are profiling the future in an arena that demands a better understanding of solutions to problems created by actual mining."

"Grade estimation is the cornerstone of longrange mine planning. Pit designs, metal recovery, mining costs, reserves calculations and reporting are all dependent upon a reliable grade model. If the geology is poorly understood or the interpolation methods and parameters have been haphazardly constructed, then massive financial losses will be the inevitable outcome. Therefore, a properly trained geologist must use all of the appropriate tools available including deposit knowledge and advances in modeling technology to construct the most geostatistically and practically sound long-range block model.Certain deposits, such as the sedimenthosted deposits at Tenke-Fungurume, require an interpolation method that best suits the style of mineralization. In 2014, Hexagon Mining developed a tool in MineSight called dynamic unfolding (MSDU) that has the potential to improve upon previous Euclidean-based interpolation methods. MSDU utilizes the nonstationarity of a folded grade trend to more accurately construct variograms and improve interpolation results based upon a modeled three-dimensional surface.Geology overview. The sediment-hosted Tenke-Fungurume mining district is located in the southeastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Fig. 1). The rocks within the district are primarily dolomites and shales from the lower half of the Roan Supergroup that were mineralized by ascending pregnant copper and cobalt rich brines within a massive sedimentary basin (Cailteux et al., 2005) (Fig. 2). These oxidized brines likely found a fluid channel in the porous RSC unit. The surrounding rock units provided a redox boundary for copper and cobalt precipitation along organic rich beds, forming a massive stratabound deposit that was later broken up by several subsequent tectonic events (Dewaele et al., 2006)."

"Mine refuge shelters are designed to protect mine workers from hazardous environmental conditions after a mine disaster, but high temperature and humidity levels inside these shelters may pose a significant safety risk. Due to the safety risks associated with human testing, detailed thermal models of shelters and human occupants have been developed using TAITherm simulation software. These models are used to predict the temperature and humidity within the shelter resulting from metabolic heating, evaporation due to sweat and respiration, moisture and heat from the shelter’s carbon dioxide scrubbing system, and heat transfer within the shelter. A detailed human thermoregulation model simulates the sensible and latent heat generated by the shelter occupants, and predicts the occupant’s body core temperature and moisture lost due to sweating and respiration. This information is used to assess the safety of the shelter. This paper presents the technical details of the human thermal model, validation comparing the human model to human subject test data, and results of a mine shelter analysis. IntroductionPortable mine refuge chambers are used in U.S. coal mines to provide protection to mine workers from hazardous conditions following a traumatic event. Although these shelters are designed to supply clean air and sustenance for up to 96 hours, prolonged exposure to the mine shelter environment itself can pose a substantial risk to human safety. Heat generated by the shelter occupants combined with heat from the carbon dioxide (CO2) scrubbing system can raise the shelter interior temperatures and relative humidity to dangerous levels that can lead to heat stress in humans. Unfortunately, the thermal burden associated with mine shelter exposure is not well characterized due to potential hazards associated with underground human subject testing. In order to assess the thermal burden on people within a mine shelter environment, a detailed thermal model was created to accurately predict the temperatures and humidity levels within the shelter, and the impact of these environmental conditions on human occupants. The model consists of a mobile inflatable tent-type mine shelter with 23 humans, and includes the surrounding mine environment. The thermal simulations were performed using a validated commercial heat transfer prediction computer software. Additionally, a module of the software provided the capability to simultaneously model the thermophysiology of 23 unique humans contained within the mine shelter. The human thermal models accounted for the thermal interaction with the environment and provided a core temperature response prediction that can be used to evaluate survivability in heat stress situations (U.S. Army, 2003). The models can also be used to determine maximum occupancy in order to maintain safe temperature and humidity levels inside the shelter in specific mine environments, to optimize shelter size for maximum heat dissipation, or to simulate active cooling systems."

On April 30, 2003, representatives of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration, Inc.(SME) met with the staff of the Division of Corporation Finance of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The meeting was held to discuss issues related to the estimation and publication of mineral resources and ore reserves. It took place in the Washington, D.C. offices of the SEC. SEC staff members included Roger Schwall, assistant director, Division of Corporation Finance; Jill Davis, senior accountant; Roger Baer, senior mining engineer; Carl Chavez, chief mining engineer; Ron Winfrey, senior petroleum engineer; and John Murphy, senior petroleum engineer. Federal regulations require refuge alternatives in underground coal mines to sustain life for 96 h while maintaining an apparent temperature below 35 °C (95 °F). Research by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has shown that heat and humidity buildup is a major concern with refuge alternatives because they have limited ability to dissipate heat, and high internal air temperature and relative humidity (RH) may expose occupants to heat stress. The heat transfer process within and surrounding a refuge alternative is complex and not easily defined, analytically or experimentally. To investigate heat and humidity buildup in refuge alternatives, NIOSH conducted multiple in-mine, 96-h tests on a 10-person tent-type refuge alternative, a 23-person tent-type refuge alternative and a six-person metal-type refuge alternative. The results show that when moisture was introduced to represent perspiration and respiration from miners (wet tests), the average temperature at midheight increased by 10.5 °C (18.9 °F) and the RH approached 88 percent for the 10-person tent-type refuge alternative; the average temperature at midheight increased by 9.4 °C (16.9 °F) and the RH approached 94 percent for the 23-person tent-type refuge alternative; and the average temperature at midheight increased by 7.7 °C (13.9 °F) and the RH approached 95 percent for the sixperson metal-type refuge alternative. For the dry tests, where no moisture was introduced, the average internal temperature increased by 12.6 °C (22.7 °F) for the 10-person tent-type refuge alternative, by 10.3 °C (18.5 °F) for the 23-person tent-type refuge alternative and by 8.4 °C (15.1 °F) for the six-person metal-type refuge alternative. These results may provide refuge alternative manufacturers and mine operators with guidelines and considerations for evaluating temperature profiles for portable refuge alternatives. The information may then be used to make decisions on occupancy ratings and heat mitigation strategies based on the thermal environment in which the refuge alternatives will be installed.

Companies in the mining industry have been involved in a range of controversies over planning, siting, permitting, environmental, and enforcement issues. Through the use of conflict resolution case studies, this paper will present approaches and procedures that can help companies and other involved parties to successfully manage and resolve differences in a mutually acceptable manner.

"Fatigue presents several challenges for the mining industry. Depending on the specific occupation, daily work or operational setup on any given mine site, mining jobs can have a fair amount of labor-intensive tasks mixed with monotonous and repetitive duties. Combined with the long working hours and shift-work schedules of mining work, the prevalence of fatigue in mine workers may seem rather unsurprising.Mining is certainly not alone in facing the challenge of addressing worker fatigue. Indeed, many of the characteristics above mirror the similarities of fatigue in other industries, such as health care, aviation and security. To the extent that fatigue in mining acts like fatigue in any other industry, then any fatigue management applications, trainings, or interventions in existence can be borrowed from other industries and applied to mining in a cookie-cutter approach. However, some have argued that mining in particular is especially susceptible to increases in the prevalence of fatigue beyond the characteristics listed above due to the multifaceted combination of factors in mining environments associated with fatigue: dim lighting; limited visual acuity; hot temperatures; loud noise; highly repetitive, sustained, and monotonous tasks; shiftwork; long work hours; long commute times due to mine site remoteness; early morning awakenings; and generally poor sleep habits (Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety, 2012; Legault, 2011). Legault (2011) in particular argues that it is the combination of these factors simultaneously that can make mineworkers particularly susceptible to sleep deprivation and fatigue in comparison to other industries where these factors are often not present all together. If fatigue looks and acts different in mining, as others have argued, more research is needed to determine if, how, and why worker fatigue might need to be managed differently in mining.While the burden of fatigue on the mining population has not yet been evaluated thoroughly, methods and measures of fatigue management remain a popular point of discussion. Many commercial suppliers and consultancy groups have begun to develop technologically based fatigue monitoring systems (McMillian, 2013). One of the critical challenges facing the mining industry ? and not just in the United States ? is the looming labor shortage. A significant percentage of the industry?s professional workforce is, well, getting old, and many will be retiring in the next 10 years or so. This is not a new issue to the industry. It has been discussed at various industry meetings and conferences for many years. How does mining, with its largely negative public image, attract young people to mining schools? And, equally important, who is going to teach them? Mining schools, what?s left of them in the United States, are beginning to lose qualified faculty to retirements, and no one is available to replace them. SME addressed this issue during the keynote session at its annual meeting in February in Denver, CO. This year?s theme was ?Mining: It?s About the People.? Despite a blizzard that blanketed the city on the day most attendees were to have arrived, the meeting still attracted a record 7,202 people. And the accompanying exhibit sold 822 booths, also a record. The U.S. Department of Energy?s National Energy Technology Laboratory contracted with the National Academies? National Research Council to complete a study concerning the availability of skilled workers to meet the energy and mineral security requirements for the United States. The National Research Council, in turn, asked SME to collect and analyze workforce trends in these industries. The result of SME?s analysis is the report ?Emerging Workforce Trends in the U.S. Energy and Minerals Industries.? It is available on the SME website, www.smenet.org. Click on Government Affairs. While the report did not paint a completely dismal picture, there were some disturbing results. It concluded that within 20 years there will not be a sufficient number of skilled professionals to satisfy the labor demand. That said, the report said that most of those positions would likely be filled. However, the U.S. mining will go through a period of time when the workforce will be made up of very young and senior workers.

Enclosed cabs have been used for many years to isolate workers on mobile equipment in the mining industry for health and safety reasons. These enclosed cabs create a microenvironment for workers where they can be either more protected or more vulnerable to contaminants. Over the past decade, the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has performed substantial research efforts to improve the air quality inside enclosed cabs of underground and surface mobile mining equipment. In these efforts, NIOSH has partnered with mining companies, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and manufacturers of filtration and pressurization systems in a synergistic effort to reduce respirable dust and improve the air quality inside these enclosed cabs. Various field studies over this time have shown an array of results ranging from very minor to very significant reductions (protection factor: 3-89) in respirable dust levels inside these enclosed cabs. In addition to and concurrent with the field work, NIOSH also performed a comprehensive laboratory study to evaluate all the factors involved in cab filtration and pressurization systems and identified those factors that were most significant for an effective system. From this comprehensive research effort, the key components for an effective filtration and pressurization system have been identified in an effort to provide the best air quality to equipment operators inside of enclosed cabs of mobile mining equipment, thus minimizing respirable dust exposure.

In 2008, the authors developed a methodology for identifying underground coal mines at high risk for major-hazard events. It focused on major hazard-related violations of safety standards associated with high-risk conditions. Later, using a sample of 103 mines with 2008 and 2009 data, injury measures and U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) citation data were combined into a safe performance index (SPI). The SPI was used to assess the relative safety-related risk of mines, including by mine-size category. In this paper, comparisons are made of SPI-associated, normalized safety performance measures across mine-size categories, with emphasis on small-mine safety performance as compared to large and medium-sized mines. Different reefs being extracted from a mine will, in all likelihood, have significantly different semi-variogram models - and these will probably vary from geozone to geozone. As errors of estimation are dependent on the semi- variogram parameters, it follows, if a mine samples all reefs in all sections using the same sampling grid pattern, that estimation errors (or limits of confidence) will not be the same throughout the mine. This may be an undesirable situation! A geostatistical study of the relative merits of alternative sampling arrangements has been carried out by considering different reefs in different sections of a South African gold mine.

Northwest Alloys, a wholly owned subsidiary of Alcoa, produces magnesium from dolomite by reduction with ferrosilicon and aluminum. This process produces alkaline by-products in quantities that allow their consideration for use as commercial by-products. Two such products are dicalcium silicate slag, Di-Cal, and magnesium oxide condensate, MgO. The alkaline properties of these materials offer acid neutralizing capability comparable to the traditionally used lime, therefore, warranting a study for their use in applications where the neutralization of acidic waters or process solutions is required, such as treatment of mine waters. In this ongoing study, three mine waters (Bunker HillMine, Berkeley Pit, and Blackbird Mine) were selected for treatment with Di-Cal and MgO. Lime was used as the background control. The solid precipitates were subsequently contacted with pure water at four different pH conditions for stability testing of prepared metal precipitates (expanded TCLP). It was found that neutralization with Di-Cal results in precipitates which are of equivalent to superior stability than those from lime treatment.

The accurate estimation of ore reserves along with capital and operating costs are two key components to the successful outcome of any feasibility study. In recent years, there have been many project failures caused by improper estimation of ore reserves. The accurate estimation of ore reserves for any deposit relies heavily on understanding its geology and underlying assumptions unique to the estimation techniques being used. The assumptions unique to commonly used traditional and geostatistical reserve estimation technique will be reviewed. The shortcomings of the estimation techniques and their possible impact on a given project's economic outcome will be discussed. The latest developments in geostatistics in overcoming existing reserve estimation problems will be presented.

The effects of pressure and cake thickness were studied using a split-plot design for pressure filtration of a fine refuse slurry obtained from a bituminous coal preparation facility. Pressure filtration offers the potential to significantly reduce the moisture content of the fine refuse stream with the addition of little to no flocculants, thereby minimizing the volume of refuse stored in impoundments and providing a recycle water stream for use within the plant. Experimental results showed that the final cake moisture decreased with increase in pressure and decrease in cake thickness. In addition, specific cake resistances calculated for the various tests indicated an increasing trend with increasing pressure and decreasing cake thickness. With increase in cake thickness, an increase in cake moisture and the weight of solids deposited in the cake was observed. An ANOVA analysis indicated that both cake thickness and pressure significantly affected the cake moisture, while only cake thickness statistically influenced the weight of solids in the cake. A regression model was developed with an R2 value of about 0.99 to relate cake thickness, the single largest statistically significant factor, with the weight of solids in the cake. Filter capacities were calculated in terms of the solids deposited per unit time based on a product specification of 25 percent cake moisture, and it was observed that the thinnest cake had the highest filter capacity.

In recent years, economies of scale have continued to drive copper projects to larger throughputs to offset depleting lower grade resources. A decade ago, there were only a small number of projects that stretched beyond 100 kt/d (110,000 stpd) throughput rates. Today, and moving forward, virtually all the major copper projects are sized beyond this, with throughput rates up to 250 kt/d (275,000 stpd) now under evaluation for a number of key projects in Chile and Peru. This paper explores the development from the 160 m3 (5,650 cu ft) flotation cells, through to the 257 m3 (9,076 cu ft) cells and to the current 660 m3 (23,380 cu ft) machines. The contributions of specific copper concentrators to this growth phase are reviewed in this article. The historical basis of flotation machine scale-up is also briefly discussed. Metallurgical results as well as layout, maintenance and operational aspects are highlighted.

On March 15, 2012, about 24 attendees from several western states attended Roundtable 2012, hosted by Knight Piésold and Co. at the Red Lion Hotel and Casino in Elko, NV. The focus of this year?s discussion was ?Acid Rock Drainage for Engineers and Environmental Scientists.? Other names may have been more suitable for the event, perhaps combining geochemistry, with air and water quality and their long-term effects on soil and rock mechanics. Bryan Ulrich (senior vice president, Knight Piésold?s Nevada operations) and Steve Lange (senior geochemist, Knight Piésold, Denver, CO), helped facilitate the discussion. Attendees included personnel from a dozen mining properties, various corporate offices and academia. There were also attendees from a geochemical testing laboratory to help respond to specific questions pertaining to testing protocol and procedures.
