"Mining companies want to be in a position to move quickly and seize a favorable market or to keep their key staff productively busy. One of the problems for these companies is the time required to compensate for unavoidable impacts that the mine will have on the natural environment and to gain environmental permits. All too often, circumstances that were favorable when the project was proposed have become less favorable by the time all the hurdles have been cleared.Accordingly, many mining companies are interested in ways they can inject more predictability into their timelines for gaining environmental permits, shorten those timelines, and be more certain of getting the permits they need to carry out their next project.One increasingly popular way to do this is through a relatively new kind of service — the mitigation bank.Mitigation banks purchase property or easements through property that has been impacted by agricultural, industrial or resource activity. They then turn it around from an environmental point of view. This might include restoring streams and wetlands so that fish and aquatic organisms can survive, and animals have habitat and food to flourish.Appropriate native species of plants including trees and shrubs are planted, and steps may be taken to introduce wildlife to the new habitat. In some cases, a special focus is placed on creating habitat for rare and endangered species of plants or animals.The property is inspected by regulatory authorities, coordinated through an interagency review team (IRT). If the property is determined to be effective as natural habitat, the mitigation bank is then issued credits that it can then sell to development projects that are creating an unavoidable permitted environmental impact elsewhere. A mining company, for example, would buy credits to offset the aquatic impacts due to construction of a mine, access roads and other infrastructure — as required by the Section 404 Clean Water Act permit that governs those unavoidable aquatic impacts. The mitigation bank used for offset must have an IRT-approved service area that includes the location of the impacts."

A novel system for the depression of pyrite and the ash-forming minerals has been developed. A metal ion, including but not restricted to Fe+2, is added to form a hydroxide coating on the pyrite or ash-forming mineral. A polymeric depressant is then added to attach to this re-surfaced mineral. Nearly 200 flotation tests with a 11 different coals indicate the effectiveness of this system. Many of the important process variables such as the coal source, frother-collector system, grind size and procedure, pH, metal ion, and depressant type and concentration have been studied.

Comminution is an integral part of the mineral extraction process. However, the influence of the comminution method (ball and rod mills) on silica and magnetite particle shapes has not been substantially investigated. Shape parameters for fractions of -250+212, -150+125, and -106+75 μm sizes were examined utilizing a scanning electron microscope and a Clemex vision PE image analysis system. The silica particles displayed higher elongation and flatness parameter values for rod mill products, but roundness and relative width parameter values of rod mill products are less than that of the ball mill products. Magnetite particle elongation and flatness parameter values of ball mill products in fraction sizes of -250+212 and -106+75 μm are larger than rod mill products, but roundness and relative width parameter values of ball mill products are smaller than rod-mill products, but for the -150+125 μm size range the result is converse. Furthermore, particle elongation and flatness increased with decreasing particle sizes of silica, whereas, roundness and relative width decreased for both Ball and Rod Mills. In case of magnetite, ball mill products displayed an increase of flatness and particle elongations with decreasing particle sizes but flatness increased and roundness and relative width decreased. Similarly for rod mills, magnetite fractions of -150+125 μm were found to have the largest values of elongation and flatness. INTRODUCTION Comminution alters the size and shape, causes lattice distortion, changes chemical composition, surface area, surface-free energy, and polymorphic transformation of all materials. The quantity and quality of such changes depend on specifications of the material feedstock, the type of mill being utilized, the specific energy input, ambient temperature, and environmental pressure [1]. The shape difference between the milled products depends on different grinding mechanisms and the respective breakage principles that these mechanisms depend on [2, 3]. With decreasing particle sizes, the nature of the particle surface become crucial [1]. The influence of the breakage technique has been found to be non-trivial and heavily dependent on the type of grinding mill used for particle size reduction [4]. Shape is an important industrial parameter for predicting particle behavior in downstream processes. The shape parameter affects the way particles burn, compact, are recovered, flow in fluids, sinter, float, agglomerate, fluidize, interact with pulmonary tissue, cut, abrade, react with chemicals, form structural materials, and retain and permit fluids to flow [5, 6]. The distribution of particle sizes and shapes are important for mining, civil and chemical, pharmaceutical, and various other industries with interest in the population modeling of atmospheric dusts, smoke, and grit [1, 3, 6]. The shape parameter not only affects the chemical, physical, surface properties of particles but is also important for downstream processes [5, 6]. Image analysis has been found to provide detailed information about size and shape of the particles and can be used for the control of product quality [4].

The Barrick Bullfrog underground mine was established as an afterthought to the main open pit. As open pit ore dwindles, the underground mining becomes increasingly more important as an ore source, and to the overall economics of the project. This situation is similar to many other mines, and there is a strong move towards underground mining in the United States today. There are inherent problems in starting and operating underground mines in the shadow of any open pit operation, and at the Bullfrog there were several attempts at productive increases that were both successful and unsuccessful.

Rhenium is primarily recovered as a by-product from molybdenum roasting circuits. However, rhenium is also present in copper heap leach solutions at very low concentrations and represents a potential new rhenium source. Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold has developed a new process using carbon adsorption followed by ion exchange or solvent extraction to concentrate rhenium from less than 1 ppm to 15 g/L. The product is compatible as a feed to an existing rhenium processing plant. A pilot plant operated at Freeport-McMoRan?s Sierrita mine has demonstrated the technical and financial feasibility of this new process.

The Kinross DeLamar Mine has been operated for more than 17 years producing precious metals dore' from ores, principally silver bearing with associated gold co-products. In late 1995 a new orebody was commissioned, the Stone Cabin orebody, and the site began a phased shift from silver dominance to gold dominance in terms of precious metals revenue. The Knelson Concentrator was selected to remove gold from a portion of the cyclone underflow stream in the grinding circuit. This paper describes the development of the flow sheet, specific mineralogical impacts on Knelson product and downstream materials, and impacts on mine/mill grade reconciliation.

I would like to congratulate Professor Gershon on an idea that is obviously valuable and is certainly new to me. It has, however, to be further developed, in that one can get fallacious results by limiting oneself to positional weights. In the example problem, the positional weight of one block was 8.6 (the 8.0 value in the paper was incorrect) for 36 units in the cone, for a mean block value of 0.239. The positional weight of the second block was 4.4 for 15 units, for a mean block value of 0.293. Surely one would expect the second block to be rated higher. Additionally, the time value of money adjustment cannot be determined by depth, because the time that a block is mined is determined by the mining sequence, not depth. Figure 1 shows a slightly altered version of Professor Gershon’s pit. The overall value of the pit is the same, as are the total values under each of his blocks. The values in the right-hand cone have been reversed top to bottom, and the values in the rest of the pit adjusted to keep the central cone total unchanged. All values have been multiplied by 10. Figure 2 shows the sequence of mining, at three blocks per year, for Professor Gershon’s pit, and Fig. 3, the sequence for a pit under the other block. Table 1 shows the value and discounted value (157. ) of Professor Gershon’s pit, and Table 2 shows similar values for the second pit. It is apparent that the second pit schedule is more valuable than the first.

This paper summarizes the Bureau of Reclamation's experience in the use of boring machines to excavate six major tunnels on the Bureau's water resources development projects in the western United States. The summary of experience is presented as a compilation of brief case studies for each of the six tunnels. Each compilation presents data on the tunnel dimensions, geological characteristics of the excavated rock, the tunneling machine used, machine operation, muck handling, method of tunnel support, ventilation system, and related information. The listing of the six tunnels in Table 1 reflects a diversity of tunnel lengths and diameters. However, despite this diversity of dimensions as well as the variety of rock encountered during excavation, the six tunnels have one major characteristic in common: their excavation was significantly expedited by the use of boring machines. Beginning with the 10,079-foot-long Tunnel No. 1 on the Navajo Indian Irrigation Project in New Mexico - the Bureau's first tunnel to be excavated by a boring machine - the boring machines, or "moles," have demonstrated their effectiveness in rapid and economical tunnel excavation. Tunnel No. 1, virtually 2 miles long, was bored through in 9 months, an unprecedented achievement in Bureau engineering experience, as compared with tunnels previously excavated by conventional means. l, INTRODUCTION Uranium mine and mill workers are exposed to external gamma and beta radiation fields from radioactive ore. In the past the average uranium content of ores mined in the United States and Canada ranged from about 0.1% to 1.0% U308 with pockets of much higher grade ore. Holiday (1973) reported that radiation surveys in the U.S. uranium mines found mean gamma "radiation rates ranged from 0.20 to 0.70 mrem/h. Such radiation rates cause relatively insignificant exposures." Others also concluded that the external gamma radiation fields associated with uranium mining did not result in significant worker exposures (Federal Radiation Council, 1967; Simpson, S.D. [et al], 1959) Gamma exposure levels in most modern-day Canadian uranium mines are reported to be low with average annual exposures estimated to be less than 1 rem/a (Frost, S.E. [et al], 1981). However, two developments are taking place which affect the potential significance of external radiation fields in the uranium mining environment. The first development stems from the most recent system of dose limitation developed by the ICRP which is intended to limit the workers' overall risk from exposure to ionizing radiation through the adoption of a sum rule (ICRP 26, 1977) which combines external and internal radiation exposures. In the case of exposure to radon daughters the sum rule will have the effect of reducing the annual exposure limit below the recommended limit by an amount that depends on external radiation and other sources of internal exposure such as the inhalation of ore dust (ICRP 1980). The Atomic Energy Control Board of Canada (AECB) is reviewing this subject and is expected to produce its recommendations shortly. Irrespective of the form of the sum rule eventually adopted by the AECB, it is clear that the net effect of the sum rule will be a collective reduction of the individual dose limits for individual exposure pathways. The second factor is the increasing development of high grade uranium deposits in Northern Saskatchewan. Some of these ore bodies have an average ore grade of 1% to 5% U308 or greater. Since the potential external radiation fields increase in proportion to the ore grade, it is apparent that increased effort in radiation protection planning is required in order to develop safe yet workable methods for mining and milling such ores. This paper is intended to provide information which can be of assistance in the formulation and development of a mining and milling plan. The principal focus of the paper is source identification and the design of radiation protection measures to limit external gamma radiation exposure. The exposure of workers to external beta radiation fields is also discussed. The paper is organized as follows: - Section 2 deals with source characterization. - Section 3 discusses the effects of finite source size and distance (i.e. geometry effects). - Section 4 presents selected data that are useful in evaluating shielding requirements. - Section 5 discusses the potential beta radiation fields. - Section 6 discusses practical data requirements for worker exposure scenarios. - Section 7 presents a variety of work exposure calculations. - Section 8 is a summary of this paper. 2. SOURCE CHARACTERIZATION This section develops the basic formulae for estimating the fluxes and doses from external gamma radiation. The calculation of the radiation flux due to a distributed source (i.e. a linear, area or volume source) as a function of distance assumes that any distributed source can be treated as a summation of point sources. [ ] Uranium ore contains radionuclides from both the decay chains of U-238 and U-235. In this paper the radioactive daughters are assumed to be in secular equilibrium with the uranium parent. (If natural thorium were present in the ore in significant quantities, the gamma rays originating from Th-232 would have to be added to the gamma rays from the uranium series). Mixed hydroxide precipitate (MHP) is a nickel intermediate product that has economical benefits to downstream leaching of lateritic marginal ores. Usually, this product is subsequently processed and refined to produce nickel by hydrometallurgy, but an alternative route can be made integrating hydrometallurgy and pyrometallurgy. Assessing the overall consumption of ferroalloys to obtain stainless steel, as an increasing practice performed in China, the synergy of nickel extraction from laterites by leaching and precipitation asMHP with the production ofMHP agglomerates applied as rawmaterial to furnaces of ferronickel production is a very attractive practice. This work aims to further the technological development of an agglomerated product feasible to hydro-pyro integration. The agglomeration experiments were performed by traditional pelletizing (firing the pellets) and cold bonded pelletizing (aging the pellets by appropriate stocking). Appropriate compositionswere prepared withMHP, additives and binders for each of these routes. A specific study of binder composition was made to find an adequate melting point. The produced pellets were tested to prove their properties by crushing strength tests. The standardization applied to iron ore was followed. The best result of crushing strength was 98.52 daN/pellet. The agglomerates with approved crushing strength for use in electric furnaces were smelted to produce alloys containing nickel; the agglomerates were characterized by scanning electron microscopy. The alloy obtained was metallic ferronickel with sulphide precipitates. Therefore, MHP pellets can be precursors of nickel alloys, which have to be refined to obtain the desirable composition.

The central Dodoma region of Tanzania is one of the regions defined by the Tanzania Craton (TC). Although the Craton gold mineralization has been well explored and hosts most of the gold deposits in the country, the understanding of the mineralization potential of the Dodoma region is still an enigma. This study using trace elements geochemistry of soil samples aims basically at providing information for future exploration works in the region by delineating the possible mineralized zones, the pathfinder elements, and the lithological facies to target. Generally, there is an anomalous spatial distribution of a probable Cu-Au deposit in the N, NE, S, and SE parts of the region and are prospective areas worth exploring for gold from the Gaussian variogram models. The multivariate statistics shows that Cu, Pb, Zn, and Fe are the main pathfinder elements while searching for Au mineralization in the region. The gold deposit is most probably a Cu-Au porphyry type, although VMS type of Au deposit cannot be precluded in the area. The mineralization in the area is largely associated with tonalitic orthogenesis, tonalities, granodiorite, and granitic rocks with Cr-Ni-Co-V forming elemental association. This elemental association is similar to other gold bearing greenstone belts. The style of mineralization in the Dodoma region is similar to other gold deposits within the TC; hence, successful exploration methods in these ancient gold deposits like Geita and Kahama gold deposits can be adopted in the event of any further exploration exercise in the central Dodoma region.

The Cresson Deposit is located in central Colorado within the historic Cripple Creek Mining District. The deposit has moved from its initial discovery in 1990 to full production in less than five years (current reserve nearly two million ounces). This accomplishment required a great deal of cooperative teamwork between the exploration, development, permitting and corporate groups. Nowhere was this cooperation more evident than in the construction of the geologic block model. The detailed modeling of gold and its metallurgical characteristics formed the foundation upon which critical financial and design decisions were based.

In this paper, we present design and implementation details of a fuzzy-behavior-based controller for an automated excavator. This robotic excavator must be equipped with sensors, actuators and an embedded control system. The excavator controller uses neural-networks to interpret forces and torques gathered from bucket mounted force sensors during the excavation process. Implementation details and experimental results using the fuzzy behavior based excavation controller are given for several excavation tasks. These excavation tasks demonstrate some of the complex skills that are essential for an autonomous mining excavator controller.

The mining sector, which has an important place in terms of raw material and energy supply, is referred as a sector with one of the highest fatal accidents in comparison with other sectors. In this century, where occupational health and safety awareness has increased, it is important to review the past accident statistics and to determine the current deficiencies by using the information in the inventory. In this study, the Malmquist total factor productivity index (MPI) has been utilized to investigate the changes in the work accidents occurring in the Western Lignite Corporation (Turkey), where underground and surface production methods are applied, and to determine the measures to be taken. According to the results obtained, both the decrease in production amount and the increase in the number of accidents caused inefficiencies during the period in concern due to the expected 10-year economic life of the mechanized system operating in the underground production panel that came to an end in 2007 and the flooding took place in early 2017. Compared with the underground operations, it has been determined that production can be carried out at the appropriate scale despite the heavy working conditions encountered due to the changing climatic conditions and the progress of production in the surface operations.

The Bagdad district is 67 kilometers west of Prescott, Arizona, (Figure 1). The area north of the Old Dick and Bruce Mines was originally mapped by Anderson, Scholz and Strobell between 1943 and 1945, (1). The region is perhaps better known for the Bagdad porphyry copper deposit of tertiary age. However, 2 to 5 kilometers south of this deposit are several small massive sulfide occurrences in a eugeosynclinal Precambrian greenschist environment. More specifically, in. the Bridle formation of the Yavapai schist series. Three of these mines - Old Dick, Bruce and Copper Queen - were mined by Cyprus Mines Corporation between 1957 and 1977, and produced nearly 2mm tons of 3.6% copper and 12% zinc. These deposits occur at the interface between andesite and rhyolite and are stratiform in character. Certain structural and textural properties of the Bruce orebody suggest that remobilization of the massive sulfides occurred at some period during the metamorphic history of the area.

In fluctuating airflow, continuous air velocity recording is the most reliable method of air velocity measurement. It allows for fast recognition of changes and the calculation of long-term averages. Also, it enables the mine operator to identify when the airflow has decreased to a point requiring action. Using ultrasonic anemometers provides an accurate option for continuous air velocity monitoring. This paper provides information about the effect of common obstructions in underground mining on air velocity readings. Stationary and moving obstructions are used to represent workers and equipment that would cause discrepancies in measured airflow. Also, it is important to know how large of a sample size is required to ensure reasonable accuracy of results. Statistical analysis is used to evaluate the required sample size. The sampling procedure is further studied by comparing two different sample rates. The results show that obstructions provide noticeable differences in air velocity measurements. Also, movement of obstructions can be recognized from changes in results. Surprisingly small sample sizes provide reliable air velocity information. Standard sample rates are found to be suitable for the underground environment.

Ongoing economic success for mining companies is dramatically enhanced when they really know what they are harvesting, such that they can accurately forecast their head grades for any time period in excess of a month. This is an uncommon experience. It is a very common scenario for resource/reserve estimates to overstate the concentration (grade). Grade is a critical input of revenue, and hence, it is to cashflow projections. With the current direction being taken by the legal climate, it is no longer adequate for directors to accept the resource/reserve estimates of experts at face value. This is because resource/reserve estimates are the foundation of primary mineral economic decisions. Directors of mining assets need to undertake their own due diligence analysis of these estimates, in the best interest of themselves, and the company's shareholders. In the light of the industry's past achievements, this is quite a challenge. This paper suggests a set of new objective tools for directors to undertake an overview of the unique commodity concentration pattern and assess associated economic dynamics of each mineralization. These tools allow the examination of global graphical trends that can be helpful to directors and others in undertaking due diligence of resource/reserve statements. Ensure that it smells right.

This study reports preliminary feasibility investigations for utilization of the selective carbothermic reduction and smelting (SCRS) processing scheme to beneficiate low-grade iron-manganese (Fe-Mn) mineral deposits from MN, USA. The study includes laboratory-scale demonstrations using an induction furnace and production of various products by manipulation of operational parameters. The products include alternative iron (Alt Fe), high carbon ferromanganese (HC FeMn), alternative silicomanganese (Alt SiMn), and upgraded manganese concentrate (Mn conc). All of these products have commercial value and can be used in various applications as raw materials.

Environmental concerns and increasing mine development costs have created a need for early information on gold recovery from its host environment. The habit, association, and approximate abundance of minerals which contain unacceptable metallic ions which may be released during process of concentration of gold should be identified in exploration drill core. One case of a "clean" gold orebody is described to show that early petrographic studies contributed to a rapid decision to mine a small deposit by open pit and to custom mill the ore in an already restricted effluent environment. A second example describes identification of an undesirable mercury content and resulting action taken.

The speed and internal accuracy of today's electronic calculators can be utilized to write an efficient slurry calculation program. The calculator's input/output printing feature offers additional benefits for data organizing and record keeping. This program allows slurry calculations to be performed without the urgency of immediately transferring a calculated result onto a process flowsheet or specification sheet. The number of flowsheets required for some hvdrometallurgical processes means the number of process stream blocks or ladder diagram entries can become substantial. Slurry calculations for such projects tend to become repetitious and tedious, and the chances for errors increase both in calculation and data entry onto process documents. Using this program has minimized both types of errors. Checking process flowsheets is particularly expedient with the program because you may "walk" through the flowsheet on a weight basis, i.e., solids rate and solids density, and have the program verify and/or correct the volume entries, gallons, and specific gravities. The program was initially used on a beneficiation project to check some 500 data entry values on ladder diagrams covering seven process flowsheets. Numerous hand calculation errors were determined and corrected, and the time for completely checking and correcting the flowsheet ladder diagrams was substantially reduced.
