At mine sites, the operational and required storage volumes of solution and water storage ponds and reservoirs are usually calculated based upon a water-balance approach. Many climatological variables including precipitation, air temperature, solar radiation, pan evaporation and relative humidity along with operating parameters, are used in the water-balance model. The water-balance model often seeks to find a “critical period” of wet or dry climatological sequences which result in a “maximum” pond storage volume or water demand. The problem with this approach is that the designer usually does not know when the project will come on line in relation to the historical record. To avoid this pitfall, we use a more robust approach. In the more robust method, the water-balance calculations begin in each year of the historic climatological record. This method results in the same number of water-balance runs (or realizations) as the number of years of climatological record. Results of this type of analysis guarantee that the critical period or maximum required pond volume will be found if it is assumed that the historical climatological record repeats itself or if a synthetic time series is used. In addition, this method permits calculation of the likelihood (probability) that a given pond volume will be equaled or exceeded in any given month of the operational life of the facility. In this paper, the results of the sizing of a heap leach pad solution pond are presented along with the probabilities of a given solution pond size being equaled or exceeded based on the robust water-balance approach.

Colorado has recorded more than 100 years of industrial mineral production. Much of the state's history, culture, and economy is based in mining, but the industrial minerals and construction materials comprising the nonmetallics sector of the industry very often are overlooked or overshadowed by mineral fuels and the metals. Indeed, many of these materials find use in seemingly unimportant industrial applications essential to our economy and life style and yet are not so recognized by the consumer. Unlike many other mineral resources, the numerous industrial minerals occur in many different and often exotic geologic environments, some of which are characteristic only of the western states. In Colorado only a few of these minerals have continued production through the years; many saw only "boom" periods or other critical times of need, such as the world wars. The changing needs and demands of our society in the 1980s will stimulate yet another era of intensive activity in our industrial minerals storehouse. Researchers are finding new uses and applications for these materials in dealing with the energy crisis and fuel shortages, the need to develop domestic mineral reserves of all kinds, and the goals of reuse and recycling. Some of Colorado's little-used and unused industrial minerals hold extraordinary promise in solving some of these problems on the regional and national levels. In this paper we will look at the history of development of Colorado's more prominent nonmetallics and especially at current research on and future potential of several other commodities among which Colorado contains the largest known reserves.

Novel dewatering aids were tested on various coal samples from the U.S. and Canada in laboratory and pilot-scale filtration experiments. The reagents substantially improved the dewatering kinetics and reduced the cake moistures. The cake moistures were typically reduced from 20-30% by weight to 8-14% range in vacuum filtration. When the reagents were used in conjunction with a pressure filter, higher degrees of moisture reductions were achieved. In the present work, the novel dewatering aids were tested using different types of pilot-scale vacuum filters. The results were consistent with those obtained in laboratory experiments.

The Harts Range deposit, owned by Olympia Resources is located some 130 kms northeast of Alice Springs, in central Australia (part of Australia’s Northern Territory). The core economic minerals here are industrial grade garnet and alumino magnesio hornblende (AMH). The resource contains an estimated 2.3 million tonnes of recoverable garnet and 6.2 million tonnes of recoverable AMH, making Harts Range one of the most significant abrasive medium deposits in the world. Part of the general marketing axiom of Olympia Resources is to make high quality products from the garnet and also a special series of blended garnet/AMH products to match the needs for other sectors of industry. The deposit mineralization is of alluvial origin and thus, requires no significant liberation regimes. Over 50% of the head feed is in the form of SiO2/quartz and as much as 17% is –63micron clay slimes and mica. Original pilot scale testwork for flowsheet development centred around fairly conventional wet gravity systems, with spiral concentrators being the pre-eminent separating device. To a point, this type of flowsheet was going to achieve some of the aims albeit fairly predictably. The one area that this circuit would be very limited though is in the recovery of the very coarsest of the medium SG minerals. This was going to be a very important and longer-term costly flaw. Amongst the highest demand, greatest value of products to be produced will be the range of garnet & AMH in the +600 microns sector. A flowsheet dominated by spirals would be fated to forfeit a significant proportion of these coarse minerals to tails. At the Outokumpu Technology P/L test facilities in Perth, testwork was conducted using a pilot scale Floatex® Density Separator, the LPF-230 model. Using a twin stage approach, whereby a primary Floatex® underflow reports directly to a secondary Floatex®, recovery of the economically important +600 micron garnet was increased from 65% in the spirals-only flowsheet to 95% using the Floatex® based flowsheet. Finally, the other significant aspect of this approach is in substantial simplification of the circuit required and a huge reduction in plant footprint. Also, the nature of using hindered settling provides substantial opportunities for process control and automation.

The theoretical analysis of tumbling mill energetics and performance has largely neglected mill dimensionality, and, in particular, the importance of the length/diameter ratio. This is in spite of the fact that practice varies substantially in this area: geographically, for semi-autogenous and autogenous mills, as between North America and South Africa/Scandinavia; historically, for overflow ball mills, for which the L/D ratio has increased significantly from the earliest small mills to/the largest mills currently. The present study is concerned primarily with the influence of the L/D ratio on the design and operation of overflow ball mills; on the occurrence of the overload phenomenon; and on the limits, if any, it may impose on mill capacities because of critical pulp axial velocity limits. It will be shown that the shape face or is of major importance in this area; and that its adjustment to the extent that this is practical should remove the diameter limitations previously postulated for this mill type.

At that time the financial markets were on the verge of collapse and my presentation described the issues. Unfortunately I was correct, and global markets went into a steep nosedive, creating the largest economic downturn since the Great Depression.In hindsight, there were plenty of signs that this was coming. The Supercycle had created massive new wealth. This wealth was largely invested in the United States due to the country’s political stability and credit worthiness. In 2004, the large investment banks convinced the U.S. Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) to allow them to triple their borrowing leverage ratios. This made the banks more vulnerable to market volatility. The banks then lent money to NINJAS - people with no income, no job and no assets. Even worse was the fact that these unqualified home owners used adjusted-rate mortgages (ARMs) which they, of course, intended to refinance prior to interest rates rising. These mortgages were then bundled up by the banks and sold to investors as “safe” investment products. The money flowed into these products because the rating agencies gave these instruments high marks. These same agencies earned their fees from the very same banks seeking high ratings. (No conflict there). Private debt exploded and peaked out in 2008.These mortgage products were sold in an unregulated shadow banking system and the ARMs came due. Toxic mortgage default rates skyrocketed and the mortgage-backed securities collapsed in value. This house of cards had a negative feedback loop that accelerated the market crash and resulted in more than $1.5 trillion being lost in the securitization sector, a 47 percent decline in the Dow Jones Industrial Average, foreclosure rates skyrocketing and housing prices collapsing. The financial markets were in a nosedive."

In a solvent extraction (SX) plant, stage efficiency calculations are used to determine mixer efficiency. With modern extractants and mixing equipment, it is generally taken for granted that stage efficiencies will be above 95%, but this is not always the case. Dependant on mixer/solution conditions, stage efficiencies can occasionally be low, therefore leading to higher reagent usage. Proper methods to identify when stage efficiency performance is below expectations, and ways to identify if it is an equipment or chemical issue are valuable tools for a plant metallurgist. With these tools and skills an on-site metallurgist can more quickly return their SX plant to proper operation. This paper will discuss methods for analyzing stage efficiency, evaluating factors that may affect stage efficiency, and evaluating the impact of stage efficiency on the overall operation.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) can occur as a natural phenomenon through oxidation of sulfide minerals. Oxidation by air and water can be exacerbated by mining. Because AMD can exhibit low pH, it is capable of extracting heavy metals from mineral deposits. The result is highly acidic drainage with elevated heavy metal concentrations -the combination of which can cause extensive environmental damage. Because of the importance of these factors, this paper is focused on sulfate based AMD. Due to widespread mining, the occurrence of AMD is ubiquitous. As a result, several approaches to treatment have been developed. Chemical treatment using alkali is most commonly employed to treat AMD. There are alternative methods of treatment, as well as alternative ways of handling treatment sludges or concentrates. Dewatering of sludge or concentrates is beyond the scope of this paper.

Heap and valley leach operations rely on solution collection piping placed within the heap to enhance both solution recovery and to assist overall solution management. The most common piping used in leaching operations is solid or perforated High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) pipe and Corrugated Polyethylene pipe (CPE). These pipes are widely used because of their low cost, ease of installation, durability, and flexibility. The typical recommended maximum design depth of burial for HDPE and CPE pipes is on the order of 30 meters (100 feet). However, ore heap heights at many facilities exceed 30 meters and some are now approaching 180 meters (600 feet) in height. At very high ore heap heights, the stability and performance of HDPE and CPE pipes becomes a critical issue for leaching facility design and operation. Failure of solution collection piping can lead to poor solution recovery, high hydraulic heads on the liner system, and in some cases, unstable ore slopes due to high solution pressures near slopes. This paper presents a review of methods that have traditionally been used to evaluate pipe stability under high normal loads. A common shortcoming of these methods is the inability to account for beneficial effects of ore arching around pipes and the time-dependent creep (stress relief) behavior of polyethylene (PE) materials. A new analytical approach is developed and presented which includes the effects of ore arching around pipes and creep of PE materials. The results of the new approach show that PE pipes will deform under high heap loads, but can remain stable and functional. Pipe stability is shown to be dependent on the type of pipe backfill and initial backfill compaction. The new approach represents a useful tool for designing applications for PE pipe under high normal loads.

The molecular structures of isobutyl xanthate (IBX), diisobutyl dithiophosphate (DIBDTP), O-isobutyl-N-ethyl thionocarbamate (IBETC), O-isobutyl-N-ethylcarbonyl thionocarbamate (IBECTC) and O-isobutyl-N-ethylcarbonyl thiourea (IBECTU) were fully optimized using density functional theory (DFT) at the B3LYP/6-31+G(d,p) level with the integral equation formalism for the polarizable continuum model (IEF-PCM) in the aqueous phases. The effects of the polar groups in these thiol molecules on their collecting performances were determined by the energies and compositions of frontier molecular orbitals and the atomic charge values. Our results indicate that the sulfur atom(s) in IBX, DIBDTP, IBETC, IBECTC, or IBECTU molecule is the centre of reactivity. And the collecting abilities of these reagents for copper sulfide minerals follow the order as: IBX > IBECTU ? DIBDTP ? IBECTC > IBETC, and the order of their selectivities against pyrite is suggested as: IBX < DIBDTP < IBETC < IBECTU < IBECTC. The theoretical analysis provides an insight into the collecting powers of these collectors, and offers an atomic scale approach to understand the experimental data available in the literature. With increasing land development, the potential of fatalities from abandoned mine shafts increases. To minimize potential liability, shaft closure should be a critical part of mined land reclamation. The Bureau of Mines is conducting research into using lightweight foam concrete in sealing abandoned coal mine shafts. A demonstration seal consisted of a 3m thick foam concrete plug to provide lateral stability inside the shaft. A high density concrete cap provided load-bearing capacity for a 100-year service life. The USBM has also completed research into changes in foam concrete when it is pumped or dropped from different heights. It is concluded from the research that foam concrete can undergo significant air loss with pumping or dropping. This foretells significant changes in the characteristics of the concrete as well as an increase in the weight and cost of the in-place concrete seal. When using foam concrete to seal abandoned mine shafts, care must be taken to minimize air loss during placement.

According to the scientific views formed by the middle of nineteen seventies there should be no possibility of commercial diamondiferous kimberlites in the north of the west European platform. However a later analysis of the geological data gave rise to the concept that diamond bearing kimberlites would be present in the north but on the mineralogical level they would differ from kimberlites of South Africa and Yakutia. Further investigations resulted in the confirmation of these conclusions and with discovery at the beginning of 1980 of diamond bearing kimberlite pipes in the Arkhangelsk region.

Methane has been a hazard since the beginning of coal mining and has influenced, more or less, every aspect of coal mine design. It is receiving increased attention lately because the rate of methane emission in coal mines is increasing as increasing demand for coal leads to exploitation of deeper seams and the use of higher productivity equipment. Consequently, the government and private industries have directed a great deal of effort towards understanding and solving the problem of methane emission in coal mines. In the United States, Consolidation Coal Company has pioneered research in this area since the early 1950&apos;s.1 Currently this work is being expanded by Consol through the Mining Research Division of the parent company, Continental Oil (Conoca), to find new techniques for degasification of virgin areas as well as control of methane in gob areas. Basic reservoir properties of coal seams, such as gas content, reservoir pres-sure, diffusivity, porosity and permeability are better understood today largely through the efforts of the U. S. Bureau of Minese2,3,4 It is possible now to identify and model the basic mechanism of gas emission from coal and to forecast steady as well as unsteady state emission of methane in coal mines with some degree of reliability. Combining this knowledge with any ventilation simulator should often identify problem areas in advance and permit adequate methane control measures to be planned.5 Another recent innovation in methane control is the horizontal hole drilling technology. The U. S. Bureau of 1-1ines and the Mining Research Division of Conoco have independently developed techniques for drilling horizontal holes 300 to 600 m deep6 The Bureau&apos;s method employs a rotary drill string while Conoco uses a non-rotating string with a down hole drill motor. It is the authors&apos; view that the latter provides more positive control on bore hole deviation both vertically and laterally and appears to be faster, though somewhat more difficult to operate. "Steel members of the ground support systems in underground mines are routinely exposed to corrosive environment that may range from acidic to alkaline. Corrosion of steel bolts leads to metal loss and thereby, reduction in strength and useful life. Protective coatings are commonly applied to the steel bolts to combat corrosion. However, coatings are expensive and often cumbersome in practical applications. Instead, Minova has developed an innovative technology based on sacrificial anodes. The anodes were designed from non-ferritic alloys that are inferior to steel on the Galvanic Series. This paper will present data from field testing to show significant benefit of the technology. Potential applications in current products will be discussed. INTRODUCTION Corrosion is a physical alteration of a steel material from electrochemical reaction with its environment that often results in reduction of the mechanical and physical properties of that material. Mine roof bolts, the subject of this investigation, are particularly susceptible to corrosion as they can be exposed in their working environment to ground water and air with high humidity. As other researchers have determined, corrosion increases markedly in sulfide ore bodies due to acid runoff. There are several types of corrosion that a rock bolt is likely to undergo when used for ground reinforcement in underground mines (Aziz et al., 2013). Of all the types of corrosion, pitting is particularly dangerous as it can remove capacity for the bolt to deform with subsequent strata movements. Sudden failure of a bolt is likely to occur when severe pitting corrosion is experienced. The type and nature of corrosion depend on the nature of the ground condition and bolt encapsulation. Generally, the type of corrosion and severity of the corrosion varies along the axis of bolt. Almost all of the mine roof bolts used in mines, with the exception of fiber reinforced polymers, are made from steel. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) constructed four passive biochemical reactor systems (BCRs) to treat mining influenced water (MIW) in the Bunker Hill Superfund area near Coeur D?Alene, Idaho between 2002 and 2003. Initially, the BCRs operated very effectively. However, in the past couple of years, the zinc removal effectiveness of the four BLM BCRs has declined [1]. The central objective of this study was to characterize the microbial communities and substrate present within the BLM BCRs and to use these factors to propose strategies to promote sustained sulfate reduction levels. Microbial communities were characterized by quantifying total bacteria and sulfate reducing species. Substrate was characterized by quantifying the percent organic, acid soluble organic, acid insoluble organic, and bioavailable material within the BCR. The results suggest the depletion of bioavailable organic substrates is the primary cause of the decline in zinc removal and not the microbial community structure. The ability to assess the amount of bioavailable organic substrate and microbial community is important to the understanding of the sulfate reducing capacity of the BLM BCRs and developing strategies to facilitate performance enhancement of the current BLM BCRs. The characterization of organic substrate and microbial community structure are also important to improving design of future passive treatment systems for mining influenced waters.

"INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND Weakness zones or faults containing clay-rich gouge represent one of the most challenging rock mass conditions to be encountered during tunneling. In Norway, such conditions count for a large part of the rock support costs, and in cases where the rock support has been insufficient, serious instability and cave-in have in many cases been the result. Most commonly, such cave-in has occurred after water filling of hydropower tunnels, but in some cases it has also occurred in tunnels under excavation and in completed “dry” tunnels. To avoid instability, two important requirements have to be fulfilled: 1) The location of the weakness zone and its character have to be identified in time. 2) The rock support has to be sufficient to withstand the loading caused by the zone. An incident which really brought the problems related to swelling clay into focus was the cave-in at the Hanekleiv road tunnel in 2006. Here, rock fall from the roof as shown in Figure 1 occurred unexpectedly about 10 years after the tunnel was completed. Fortunately this happened at a time with very little traffic, and nobody was injured. This incident emphasized the significance of the issue of swelling clay, although it was found to be caused also by gravitational collapse of the clay-rich gouge material of the weakness zone, and not related to swelling only (Nilsen et al. 2007).In this paper, main focus will be on discussing the characteristic features of swelling clay, test procedures which are being used for characterizing swelling clay, and the reliability of the results from testing for use in support evaluation and design in conditions with swelling clay. It is generally well known that swelling clay may cause considerable pressure on support elements, but quantifying this pressure for reliable analysis and design of rock support is still a great challenge."

The Anshan Iron and Steel Co. (AISC) broke its steelmaking design capacity in 1978, bringing its total production of steel products to 6.86 Mt. Located south of the industrial city of Shenyang, Liaoning Province, in northeastern China, it is by far China’s most important iron and steel complex, ranking twentieth among world centers. The complex represents a unique blend of old ecluipment and new ideas for increased production and improved products. Under a state plan, the Chinese hope to raise capacity to almost 15 Mt/a in the future. Originally started by the Japanese in the early 1920s, Anshan has had a rather turbulent 60-year history. It was disassembled by the Soviets after World War II, only to be reassembled by them in the 1950s. Production was also suppressed during the Cultural Revolution. Since the present-day organization, AISC, emerged, the center has experienced progressively improving conditions as well as increased production. Today, the center includes 10 blast furnaces, 24 open hearths, and two basic oxygen units, designed for 7 Mt/a ironmaking and 6.5 Mt/a steelmaking. In addition, it has six batteries of cokemaking facilities with combined 4.4-Mt/a capacity. Solid Iron Resources Anshan’s iron resources consist of a proven reserve base of over 7 Gt of 30~0 Fe, according to Kao Yang, president of the Anshan Iron Mining Co., a subsidiary of AI SC, Most of that, he continued, is amenable to surface mining. Five major mines located to the north and northeast of the city of Anshan are the principal iron ore producers. These mines trend in a somewhat circular manner and combined, represent an estimated 28.6 Ylt/a of ore capacity. In addition, some 2.2 Gt of magnesite, a necessary ingredient in steelmaking, are also part of the reserve base, according to Kao. Annual production is around .2 Mt/a of 47% magnesite, well over the steelmaking center’s annual requirements, Excess production is shipped to other steel-making centers. The largest of Anshau’s open-pit mines is the Chitashan operation with a design capacity of 8 Mt/a. Ore reserves here are well over a billion tons of 30% Fe. Earlier plans to expand production at this mine to 15 Mt/a, with the help of US Steel, have been temporarily shelved. The other mines in the district and their rated design capacity are: Kungchangling, 7 Mt/a; Donganshan, 6.4 Mt/a; Dakushan, 4.2 Mt/ti; and Yenchienshan, 3.0 Mt/a. The Kungchangling mine is the richest in terms of ore grade at 6076 Fe. Reserves are somewhat smaller at 100 Mt. The unit also operates a small shrinkage stoping operation. Methane Rating has been developed from a need, in South Africa, for quick and simple measurement of coal face methane characteristics. It employs proven existing direct measurement methods, adapted specifically for rapidly advancing coal face conditions, to deal with the short term high release rates encountered during continuous miner coal cutting. The Rating is a comparative value, relative to the normal or average conditions encountered within a maintained data base. The seam gas content and the initial emission rate are plotted against each other on a graph, where they are compared with the average conditions to obtain the rating. The higher the seam gas content, and the higher the initial methane release rate, then the higher the Methane Rating, on a scale of 1 to 4. Methane being released from a newly mined coal sample is measured once underground, from a sealed gas-tight canister. The sample is returned, still sealed, to surface and milled to rapidly release the remaining methane. It is later intended that the milling process is also completed underground. Applications include the identification of changing methane conditions, outburst prone conditions, methane emission against advance, and mining in devolatilised coal.
