The Ortiz Mine is operated by Gold Fields Mining Corporation, a subsidiary of Consolidated Gold Fields Ltd., one of the world's major gold producers. The Ortiz Mine is Gold Fields only heap leaching facility as well as being their first operating mine in the U.S.A. The hydrometallurgical processes utilized for recovery of gold and silver at Ortiz are discussed along with the several practical changes in operation adopted since start-up. Included are heap leaching by cyanidation, concentration of values on activated carbon, desorption, and the final electrowinning steps prior to shipment. Construction costs and pertinent technical data are shown.

This paper analyzes the opinion in Bragg v. Robertson, 72 F.Supp. 2d 642 (S.D. W.Va. 1999), a case which threatens the future of surface mining in West Virginia and which will almost certainly result in new policies or rules that will affect surface mining everywhere. This paper addresses: (1) the jurisdictional bases of the action which relies on the federal surface mining laws to enforce a state mining program; (2) settlement agreements reached in the case that threaten to alter federal policies beyond West Virginia borders; (3) a programmatic environmental impact statement on mountaintop mining being undertaken by the federal government; and (4) an opinion by the Court outlawing excess spoil disposal in intermittent and perennial streams.

"Stainless steel castings are used in abundance in the mineral processing industry. In rotary kiln-based processes, these castings are typically exposed to high loads, corrosive elements, mechanical abrasion and cyclical temperature exposure. In the processing of iron ore pellets, it is typical to use a traveling grate preheater or a straight grate furnace to heat the pellets. Both machines have a conveyor that is mainly comprised of high temperature stainless steel castings. It is these castings which are the focus of this study. The expected life of these castings can be quite short, their cost quite high and the effort to replace them very labor intensive. The goal of this study was to gain a better understanding of the failure modes of these castings. With that basic understanding, modifications to the alloy content could be made to achieve a new operational paradigm. That paradigm could be a cheaper casting, a longer lasting casting or a casting tailored to special operating conditions (for example, highly corrosive gases or sudden temperature shocks). Over the past 4 years, Metso Minerals has sought to achieve a better understanding of the failure modes through modeling, laboratory testing and sampling of used castings from various end-users. In addition, we have tested new alloys in a laboratory setting and also in the field to see how they would perform compared to the existing ""standard casting"". Our testing has revealed interesting data concerning the impact toughness, sigma phase content and formation, chloride attack and other performance attributes of various grades of stainless steel when exposed to cyclical temperatures. Interesting results were also obtained concerning the addition of rare earth elements (Niobium, Boron, etc), nitrogen and manganese to a typical ASTM A297 grade of stainless steel. To date, a few hundred test castings have been installed in iron ore pellet plants worldwide. Many of these test castings have already experienced a year or more of operation with good results.INTRODUCTION Cast stainless steels (ASTM A297 and similar) are a main constituent used in the construction of iron ore pelletizing equipment. A typical straight grate pelletizing machine would contain upwards of 160,000lbs of ASTM A297 Grade HH castings. With a typical casting lasting only two to four years, and a casting costing around $35USD, it is easy to see that the castings are a main contributor to the overall cost of producing the pellets. Grade HH and HI (see chemical composition listed below) became the “go to” materials in the 1960’s and very few changes have been made to this day (the exception being plants that switched to flux pellet production in the 1980’s)."

Fatigue-related risk is a persistent safety concern for the mining industry. However, fatigue and sleepiness are often treated interchangeably, which can lead to confusion and potentially less effective reduction of safety risk. To provide clarity, we present an overview of similarities and differences between work-related fatigue risk and sleepiness including definitions, theories, measurements, and mitigation strategies. As a supplement, a summative visual model which highlights these similarities and differences is presented. Expanding industry knowledge in this area will assist safety professionals in crafting more targeted risk management practices appropriate for work-related fatigue risk, sleepiness, or both.

Public Law (PL) 95-87 contains explicit demands for land use planning in its reclamation and designation sections. Both sections require recognition of local land use plans; however, they are not well integrated. Accommodation to these planning requirements affords an opportunity to create better links among local land use planners, the state's permitting authority and designation office, and mine designers. Mining companies should take a more positive interest in local land use plans and in resource inventories. States should consider handing down to local government the responsibility for accepting mine permit applications and designation of unsuitability petitions.

Nuclear gauging is used world-wide in almost every industry. From mining and ore-grading to finished product, the metallurgical industry is one of the biggest users of nuclear sensors for inventory, process control, and quality assurance. This paper will discuss the basic theory of gamma transmission gauging techniques found useful in mining, milling and metal production. Techniques to be discussed are gamma transmission for level and density. A major new technique will also be discussed. This technique is called gamma backscatter. The uniqueness of this technology, how to apply and the differences between transmission and backscatter will be accentuated.

Fans used to ventilate subway, passenger rail and vehicular tunnels are similar to the fans used to ventilate underground mines. However, tunnel ventilation fan systems are typically designed to meet NFPA 130 or 502 standards, while mine ventilation fan systems must comply with the appropriate federal mine safety regulations. As a result, fan operation requirements and performance criteria, as well as typical fan and duct configurations differ significantly for tunnel and mine ventilation applications. Variations in environmental conditions in tunnels as compared to mines also result in differences in fan performance and material specifications. The need to enclose tunnel fans within building structures creates space restrictions impacting fan size selection that are not commonly encountered in mine fan installations, resulting in different approaches to selecting fans for the two types of tunnels. This paper discusses the various similarities and differences in design considerations for tunnel and mine ventilation fans.

The terms “powerful” or “selective,” which are commonly used to characetrize frothers, have intuitive rather than scientific meaning. A research program has been set out to study fundamental properties of the flotation frothers and to identify the tests which can provide information needed to characterize and classify such flotation agents.

The tremendous engineering advances occurring during this past century are very evident within the boundaries of the Anthracite Section of AIME. The Steelton plant of Bethlehem Steel Corporation, located along the Susquehanna River just east of the Commonwealth's capital at Harrisburg, for more than 105 years has experienced a most dynamic life which has paralleled America's industrial growth. (Figure 1) In June 1865, just after the Civil War, a group of men met to organize the Pennsylvania Steel Company. The war had brought into sharp focus the vital importance of the railroads to the country's expansion. Until that time wrought iron rails were used, and the replacing of track after only several months wear had become an almost unbearable cost. The spirit of free, competitive enterprise and the prospects of a lucrative market compelled these men to form that first Pennsylvania Steel Company and to develop better rail products. They issued the following statement: "...our desire to free ourselves from dependence upon a foreign market (has) led to the organization of the Pennsylvania Steel Company, and the parties who have connected themselves with it are determined to produce upon American soil all the principal manufactures of steel that are now, at such a serious cost for freight, commission, insurance, exchange, duty, etc., and often, with so much delay and uncertainty, imported from abroad. Goldberg will be the 2017 Hall of Fame Inductee and will serve as the keynote speaker at the awards banquet. Goldberg was appointed president and chief executive officer and joined the board of directors of Newmont Mining Corp. in March 2013. Prior to this appointment, he served numerous companies in key positions including Rio Tinto Minerals, US Borax and Coal & Allied Industries. At every appointment, he was able to improve safety concerns and reduce injury rates. While serving as chairman of the National Mining Association, Goldberg launched the CORESafety initiative and US Borax was the first mining company to receive the California Governor’s Environmental and Economic Award.The Medal of Merit will be awarded to John C. Lacy, a shareholder of DeConcini McDonald Yetwin & Lacy, P.C. and a director of the Global Law Center at the University of Arizona’s Law School. Lacy’s law practice concentrates on mining and public land law and encompasses transactional and title consideration involving acquisition of mineral rights. He played a crucial role in the revisions to the mining law of the Republic of Bolivia and the English translation of the mining laws and regulations of Mexico. Lacy’s expertise in mining law impelled the University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law to approach him to head the new Global Mining Law Center in 2015. "The National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum (NMHF&M) announced the 2015 National Mining Hall of Fame inductees and the 2015 Prazen Award winner. This year’s inductees, selected by the National Mining Hall of Fame’s Board of Governors, represent the technology, management, mineral policy, education and health and safety aspects of the mining industry. They envelope a diverse cross section of the mining industry and were selected for being visionaries, leaders, educators and ambassadors.In 2015, Frank F. Aplan, T S Ary, Ralph E. Bailey, John Campbell Greenway and Edward Steidle will join 227 other mining industry honorees when formally inducted into the National Mining Hall of Fame. The Second Narrows Water Supply Tunnel crossing beneath Burrard Inlet is an important component of the Greater Vancouver Water District’s plans to increase seismic resilience and meet increasing water demands. The project included the 110-meterdeep (350 ft) South TBM Receival Shaft, one of the deepest shafts to date in the sedimentary rock unit underlying much of Metro Vancouver. The shaft encountered varied sedimentary rock types, including fractured rock, with accompanying high groundwater inflows. This paper discusses the design and construction challenges associated with this shaft and the necessary means to complete the shaft in time for TBM arrival.

As the program says -we'll he talking about the expectations of the Management of an Industrial Mineral enterprise relative to the activities of geologists engaged in that enterprise. Industrial Minerals is such a large industry both in tons produced and in value of product -and of such diversity and complexity of participating enterprises, minerals and products that I doubt if anyone person can speak for the entire industry as to the expectations of management with respect to the geologist. I'm sure there are major differences in emphasis between segments of management as to the relative importance of the different aspects of the geologists' role in the scheme of things. However, we will try to generalize concerning what we consider to be important factors and to be more specific perhaps of some of the factors with which we have had direct assessable experience.

The USSR, over the last 20 years, has continued to increase its out-put year by year and it is now almost four times what it was at the end of the Second World War. In 1975, it exceeded 700 million tons of run-oi-mine coal (all ranks) which amounts to over 20 percent of world output. This rapid progress has been due to modernization of the industry, by means of increased mechanization and automation and the development of new machines and systems for underground workings and by the expansion of open-pit workings and the development and implementation of larger earthmoving machines.

"In copper solvent extraction, managing the quality of the organic phase is a key parameter to ensure optimal physical and metallurgical performance in the plant. Increased throughput as a result of declining ore grades coupled with advances in plant design and practice, resulting in reduced organic losses, has pushed the limits of the status quo with respect to organic quality. Clay treatment of plant and recovered organic at the optimal dosage is critical in maintaining quality, however, achieving the optimal dosage through existing filtration capacity and practice can be difficult. Cytec has developed a process aid that increases efficiency of existing filtration equipment that has been successfully implemented at two commercial SX operations. ACORGA® CB1000 enables higher dosages of clay while allowing for more efficient use of existing filtration capacity. This study analyzes results from commercial trials and demonstrates that improved organic quality and clarity is achievable through optimization of current treatment practices. INTRODUCTION Decreasing ore grades have prompted copper solvent extraction operations to raise PLS flow rates, increasing plant throughput to maintain production1. The ability to process higher flow rates through existing mixer-settlers historically came at the expense of increased entrainments2. However, advances in mixer-settler design, practices and improvements in organic recovery processes have enabled operations to maintain, and in some cases reduce organic losses while achieving higher flow rates through existing equipment. Based on the increased demand on the SX equipment and reduced losses (or more efficient recovery) maintenance of the circuit organic quality through efficient clay treatment is now more important than ever. This paper discusses common industry practices and related issues in organic clay treatment, and presents benefits achieved in commercial operations through the use of ACORGA® CB1000 Clay Binder. IMPROVEMENTS IN DESIGN AND PLANT PRACTICE Mixer-settler design has improved since the first commercial copper SX operation in the late 1960s. Advanced designs in mixer, settler, and settler internals have contributed to reductions in entrainments. For example, improved impeller designs have been reported to decrease organic in aqueous entrainment from the ‘old designs’ of 50-200 ppm3 to as low as 4 – 10 ppm confirmed via diluent and reagent consumptions . Similarly, operations are reporting a 20-50% decrease in reagent consumption when compared to the original design criteria3. Operations have optimized settler internals to increase coalescence and have improved settler operating practices which have been shown to reduce entrainments7. Comparison of the SX world operating data from 1999 and 2007 shows reductions in organic entrainment losses with increases in flow rates."

INTRODUCTION The headrace tunnel in Amlach is part of a hydro electric power scheme near the city of Lienz in south west Austria. The project is owned and developed by Tiroler Wasserkraftwerke AG, the regional electrical supply utility. The construction work was divided into seven contracts for the entire scheme. The power output will be 60 MW, this being developed from a head of 370 m and water flows of 20 m3/s. The water will be tapped from the river Drau and lead through a 22 km long headrace on the south side of the Puster valley through the Lienzer Dolomiten mountain range. Contract No. 4, which is a joint venture between Mayreder, Züblin, Strabag, Rella and Innerebner, involves the construction of 13.5 km of the headrace. It was decided to bore this from one single adit, which probably makes it the longest pressure tunnel driven from one side by a TBM. (See Fig. 1.) For the tunnelling an Atlas Copco Jarva MK 12 TBM was chosen. The excavation diameter is 3.90 m, with the final lined diameter being in the range of 3.20 to 3.40 m. The back-up is a 145 m long single track rail system supplied by Mühlhäuser (Germany). Side-tipping cars with a capacity each of 8.2 m were used for removing the muck. One California switch was attached to the back-up after 3,000 m, and a second fixed switch was installed after 8,000 m of boring. 3 m long

In 1967, Lone Star Industries, Incorporated, established a program to carry out the necessary Research and Development work to bring the Snyder Process to commercial application. The purpose of this paper, is to present the detailed metallurgical results gathered in comparing the Snyder Process of Comminution to conventional grinding techniques for the milling and beneficiation of certain ores and other materials. The ore primarily dealt with in this paper is a fine-grained magnetite ore, containing approximately 23% acid-soluble iron, from the Lake St. Joseph ore body of Steep Rock Iron Mines, Ltd., (Canada). This particular example was selected for presentation in this paper because extensive comparative results with conventional methods of grinding were available. Also briefly described in the paper are the comminution of other ores and materials such as porphyry copper ore and alumina.

The process of flotation is an extremely important solids separation technique employed in a wide variety of industrial process applications. Froth flotation is practiced in the coal industry to recover fines produced during the mining and cleaning of coal. A recent review article by Aplan (1) covers the processing variables encountered in the flotation of coal and the variety of chemicals and operating conditions which affect recovery. Numerous engineering and scientific studies have been performed with the goal of providing semifundamental laws of flotation behavior for improved screening of flotation chemicals, better equipment scale-up factors, etc. Often the results of such work are expressed in the form of mathematical models (e.g. 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) which are potentially useful for evaluating (simulating) on paper such alternatives as possibles process operating or configuration changes, the effects of ore and reagent changes, etc. It appears to be commonly accepted that a complete scientific/engineering characterization of flotation is immensely complicated and not sufficiently developed at the present to accurately predict (or understand) many important industrial facets of flotation. Thus, one is often reduced to detailed experimental characterization in both the laboratory and plant in order to fully evaluate flotation changes or alternatives. It is the purpose of this paper to describe a method of batch laboratory data characterization that is useful in evaluating flotation chemical reagents including froth flotation of coal. The approach consists of running a series of time-recovery curves in a batch float cell followed by the computer curve fitting of this data to a series of mathematical models based on semi-physical reasoning. The unknowns or parameters of these models are then optimally chosen so as to best fit the experimental data. In order to best-discuss the met spar industry let me take the liberty to review our involvement, that is, my company's. Our organization has been involved in the fluorspar industry for approximately thirty-five years. We started our activity in Western Kentucky as a mining company and a beneficiator of spar, that is, grinding and grading. After a few short years, the mine became contaminated and rather than invest in a flotation plant, the property was sold and our spar activity was moved, primarily to Mexico. It was decided not to establish ourselves as a Mexican corporation, so, it was necessary to take the position of backer-financier of numerous mining operations. We served in this capacity for quite some time. We also built processing plants on the border in Texas, that is, sizing, grading, etc. in order to market into the steel industry. In 1957, generally speaking, fluorspar for the steel industry was purchased as gravel fluorspar with a maximum of 10% -1/16". The price of this material was $23.50 to $24.00 per ton f.o.b. railcar at the Rio Grande Crossings and about $26.00 or $26.25 f.o.b. barge, Brownsville, Texas. Usually the material was purchased on an effective basis. As you know, 2-1/2 times the silica total, subtracted from the total CaF2 gives the effective calcium fluoride. This was normally the extent of the chemical specifications. Consequently, material was shipped with no regard whatever, to anything other than effective units. The variations in material was absolutely unbelievable. In addition to this, quite frequently, cars were shipped, as they say in the industry, topped. This being, good material placed in the top of cars or barges over bad or low grade. The entire shipment may very well have met the effective unit spec, but the complete imbalance of the sub grade vs. the high grade more or less guaranteed that the consumer was probably using a great deal of low grade and therefore, his usage had to be way higher than it should have been. He came to the conclusion, that because of these conditions and the new technology developing in the steel industry, it was just a matter of time that the entire raw material industry would have to improve. Rather than spend our efforts directed to a substitute flux, we put together a sizing and grading plant in order to ship a controlled crude product, with independent laboratory analysis confirming size and quality. The age of control was started. We began shipping 70 to 72-1/2, 80 and 85 effective with sizing 1/2" by 2", 1" by 3", and 2" by 5" with absolute control on the amount of fines. A material with no fines was a premium product. Incidentally it sold for $24.50 -60 effective up to $28.50, $29.50 for 80 effective.
