Following a study by NIOSH on the availability of teams in the U.S. as well as existing training sites and their capabilities, the Penn State University, leaders of the Pittsburgh Section of SME, providers of mine rescue equipment, and industry sponsors united to establish and make fully functional a student mine rescue team at Penn State University. With the growth of MERD and mine rescue competitive events at Missouri S&T, the Mine Training and Technology Center in PA, and at Colorado School of Mines Edgar Mine, a critical mass of effective training venues were made available to help student teams progress and develop mine rescue skills. The challenges to be met in creating and developing a student mine rescue team will be discussed. The rewards from this type of effort will be the quick capability of graduates from mining engineering programs to be involved in not only mining operations, but industry mine rescue teams and other leadership roles as well.

Microorganisms are finding more use in the mineral industry, with extensive research efforts being reported in 1991. Most of these research efforts were presented in two major meetings, the SME Annual Meeting in Denver (February, 1991) and the Engineering Foundation Conference about Mineral Bioprocessing in Santa Barbara (June 1991). In addition, several articles were published in the IMM Transactions, Minerals and Metallurgical Processing and Water, Air. and Solid Pollution Journal. The literature can be categorized as: • Review articles presenting an overview of the activities in the use of biotechnology in mineral processing. • Research efforts into genetic manipulation of microorganisms to perform a specified job. • Studies in bioleaching of metals from different types of ores. • Biotreatment of wastes from the mineral industry including acidic mine waters, uranium tailings, cyanide destruction, etc. • Investigations into the role of microorganisms in the energy materials, such as oil, coal, tar sands, oil shales, etc. Smith (Mineral Bioprocessing Conference) presented a review of research efforts as well as practical applications of biotechnology in the mineral industry. In another article, Smith et al. (Minerals Engineering) emphasized that extensive fundamentals and applied research work should be pursued to explore the fundamentals, potential and practicality of the various possible uses of microorganisms in mineral engineering.

Using mines in Canada, Boart Longyear, a leading provider of drilling services and products, has put its Stage 3 Coring Bit to the test and each time the bit has passed the test with great success. After more than a year in the field at a major mine operation in Sudbury, Canada, the Stage3 coring bit broke life records to become recognized as the most productive design in the industry. In addition to the proven advantage seen in regular bit life increases of as much as 300 percent in some cases, the design is quickly being recognized for its cost-saving operational impact. In Sudbury, the mine operation realized actual cash savings of more than C$45,000 within an eight-month period by making the switch to Stage3 bits. For years, the Sudbury Basin team has relied on the Alpha Extended Crown bit with the Express Waterway geometry option, ordering approximately 500 units per year. This 07 COM ECEX configuration performed well in medium-hard, non-abrasive to ultra-hard, non-abrasive formations with an average bit life of 150 m (490 ft). While satisfied with the performance of the Alpha Ex-tended Crown, the team agreed to put the new Alpha Stage3 to the test. Boart Longyear?s field engineers supplied five drill sites with Alpha Stage3 bits in a 07 COM configuration. After thoroughly testing the Stage3, the results were clear. Even with the well-known performance and versatility offered by the previously preferred configuration, the Stage3 set a new standard of bit performance. The new bit maintained its cutting edge for up to three times longer than the Alpha Extended Crown, a significant performance increase when compared to the 07 COM ECEX.

Tunnel boring machines (TBMs) have been used for the construction of various tunnels for mining projects for the purpose of access, conveyance of ore and waste, drainage, exploration, water supply and water diversion. Several mining projects have seen the successful and economic beneficial use of TBMs, and there is an increasing awareness of the benefits of TBMs for mining projects. Key technical considerations for the use of TBMs for the construction of tunnels for mining projects include geological issues (rock type, rock alteration, rock strength, rock abrasivity, durability, ground water in flows), depth of cover and the potential for overstressing/rockbursts, site access and terrain, portal locations, TBM constraints, minimum tunnel size, tunnel support requirements, contractor and labor experience, and project schedule demands. TBMs offer key project schedule benefits with high rates of progress, which is a unique economic advantage recognized for mining projects where timing is of the essence in order to advance mining development and achieve early startup for operations. A thorough evaluation of the anticipated ground conditions should be performed as part of the decision to adopt a TBM for a mining project. Minimum specifications for TBMs are necessary in order to prevent the incorrect type of TBM from being used. Appropriate geotechnical investigations are necessary in order to provide key information on the anticipated subsurface conditions for careful planning and design of the proposed tunnel alignment. The overall site and geological conditions associated with some projects may suggest that it is not appropriate to use TBMs for some mining projects due to a perceived higher risk. Fossil resin types occurring in the Hiawatha seam of the Wasatch Plateau coal field, Utah, have been separated according to color and their physical and chemical properties evaluated. These resin types were separated into four color fractions, yellow, amber, light brown, and dark brown. Each resin type has then been subjected to comprehensive spectroscopic examination and other physical methods of characterization. Included among the spectroscopic methods of characterization are FTIR and 13C NMR spectroscopy. Physical properties that have been measured include density, optical, and magnetic properties. These analyses reveal that the resins are distinct from other macerals, predominantly nonaromatic in nature with small amounts of oxygen functionalities and a low degree of unsaturation. The four resin types show distinct differences in certain physical and chemical properties such as density, hexane solubility, magnetic susceptibility, and aromaticity.

Adaptations and redesign of the existing already very successful and proven road milling machine concept and technical innovations such as an optimized, specifically for mining application developed cutting drum, cutting housing design and cutting tools, high manoeuvrability achieved via a tight turning radius, a three disk clutch system and a cutting drum drive that allows for the acceptance of higher loads, a complete reinforcement of the chassis to withstand higher vibrations and torque, the installation of increased engine power via a modern drive unit, a specifically for mining/construction applications developed operator’s platform and finally a redesigned air intake system and the adaptation of the levelling system resulted in far more cost effective and advantageous capabilities of Wirtgen Surface Miner in soft to medium hard mining and construction applications. As the achieved results show for the first time in modern surface mining history mechanized cutting is capable to compete successfully against traditional drill, blast/ripping and other conventional mining methods.

Accurate prediction of gold (or other metal) production from a heap leach operation is essential to the economic vitality of any such operation. However, this is also one of the most challenging issues facing managers of these facilities. Three approaches to modeling gold production from the Valley Leach Facility (VLF) at Anglogold’s Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mining Company are presented. Evolution of these modeling methods has been necessary as ore heights and volumes have increased. The aggregates industry is the largest minerals industry in the United States producing over 2.6 billion metric tons of crushed stone, sand and gravel annually. Approximately 5% of that production is fine material, passing a 75-micron mesh sieve. Of that amount, about 77% is not sold and represents one of the major industry issues. The material accumulates in stockpiles and settling ponds having an operational and economic impact on the site’s bottom line. Many factors cause this material to be produced: from blasting and processing techniques all the way to end use specifications.

Micro-computers have made it practical to install a high-speed acquisition system to collect data from a longwall face in near real-time. By simultaneous data analyses using neural networks and fuzzy sets, information regarding longwall mining performance and underground behavior can be provided and forecasting longwall instability and detecting geological anomalies is feasible. This paper presents details of the application of neural networks and fuzzy sets in developing on-line evaluation of longwall roof behavior. Techniques for interpreting longwall shield pressures and characterizing roof conditions are discussed.

The heap leaching process has been widely used for recovering different metals since its first application at the end of the 1960s. In Chile, copper production via heap leaching has accounted for between 30 and 40% of annual copper production over the past 10 years. This level of production has been achieved through and supported by the use of a mathematical relation, known as the leaching ratio (LR) or irrigation ratio (IR), which relates operational parameters with metal extraction in a heap leaching operation. This ratio has been used to develop leaching column tests, to scale up results from the laboratory to industrial operations, to design new heap leaching plants, and in metallurgical control and production estimation. In spite of the widespread industrial use of this relation, few scientific studies mention it. This is due to its simplicity and basic theoretical foundations. This disparity between industrial practice and scientific research could lead to operational decisions which lack substantial theoretical support, and to scientific studies which have limited industrial impact. Against this background, several questions arise about the use of the LR: What are the constraints on the use of the LR? Are there practical advantages with respect to reported kinetic models? What is the main reason that industry prefers the use of the LR over kinetic models, which enjoy greater theoretical support? In order to guide its future use, this paper describes the leaching ratio and its current uses and limitations, through a literature review and case studies.

Asbestos analysis is conceptually simple. The objective, in most environmental analyses, is to determine the number of asbestos fibers per unit area or volume in a sample. The sample may be a consumer product, an ambient air sample, or a water sample. This determination is complicated by several factors including sample collection and preparation, counting techniques, and the operational definition of asbestos in use. Three different definitions have been used in the study of environmental samples; these are summarized in Table 1. [ ]

Theoretical development of comminution models has come about in the last 10 years. These models assume that the material being broken is homogeneous and that the compression or energy wave is uniform throughout the specimen. Obviously, this is not the case because most comminuted materials are rocks with either many phases and/or definite grain size. The mathematical models deriving the size distribution of daughter fragments resulting from the comminution of brittle, single particles are of two schools. The first model, proposed by Gilvarry in 1961, was based on the concept of volume, surface, and edge flaw activation. The second, proposed by Meloy in 1960, was based on the concept that the crack density is a function of the energy in the comminution wave. The flaw theory has run into increasing theoretical problems and is now being abandoned. On the other hand, the crack density theory has been expanded and has successfully considered the case where there are inhomogeneities in the comminutive wave. However, the main constraint of a homogeneity in the solid being comminuted has hitherto never been overcome. In this paper, a very general derivation of the crack density model is made for inhomogeneous solids by replacing the assumption of homogeneity with an arbitrary function, P(y), which describes the susceptibility of the material to comminution as a function of position. The restraints on this function, P(y), are very broad and, hence, the derivation is extremely general. General use of the equation derived necessitates a detailed a priori knowledge of both the fracture process and of the physical properties of the material being fractured; this knowledge is expressed in open form as, P(y), the linear probability density that a plane of fracture intersects at point y on an arbitrarily oriented line segment of total length xo through the original particle. From these assumptions, a general expression for the cumulative mass distribution of particles resulting from fracture is then postulated. It is: [ ] where, B(x), is a cumulative mass of material finer than size x, r is the average number of crack,, (y), is defined above and xo is the initial particle size. It is shown that suitable assumptions reduce the expression to the theoretical results of Gaudin and Meloy and to special forms of the empirical equations of Rosin-Rammler, Gaudin and Schuhmann. Semi quantitative agreement is demonstrated by Grimshaw with experimental results of a very complex fracture of heterogeneous sandstone blocks. A need is expressed for more theoretical development of P(y), and a more extensive experimental study of both homogeneous and heterogeneous fracture. The full mathematical derivation is presented for the first time in this paper. The general implications of the equation and its application are also discussed.

The sinking and lining of a large mine shaft with 8.0 m i.d. and 1,133 m total depth is described in detail. The ground freezing method was applied to safely sink the shaft through unstable, waterbearing strata. Following a brief introduction to the geological and hydrological conditions and the owner's shaft requirements, is the general technical concept to sink and line the shaft. Particular emphasis is put on the lining system which has to provide stability and absolute watertightness for the lifetime of the shaft, even though mining takes place in its immediate proximity. Machinery and equipment used to execute the work are mentioned and commented. Furthermore, the excavation and lining of the large filling stations using rock anchors and shotcrete are described. Details on performance rates are given.

The observation method is a design optimization approach for the drill and blast method in tunneling. This method includes first identifying the hazard scenarios through site investigation, formulating suitable solutions, obtaining feedback during construction, and finally using that data to optimize the design methods. This paper illustrates the application of the observational method for T-48, a railway tunnel project in the Himalayas. It is a 10.2 km long tunnel with a parallel escape tunnel and 26 cross passages. The use of observational methods in this project optimized the overall tunnel design and considerably saved the overall project cost.

The combined 80th Annual Minnesota Section of SME Meeting and 68th Annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium was held April 17 and 18, 2007, in Duluth, MN. About 350 mining industry professionals attended the conference, including engineers, executives, mining managers and suppliers from the United States, Canada, Australia, Finland and Brazil. This year’s theme was “Consolidation – Growth – Technology.” The 80th Annual Minnesota Section of SME meeting included concurrent technical papers sessions, a keynote session that featured two distinguished speakers and a general managers session in which taconite mine operators provided updates on their operations. The Minnesota Section meeting also offered an SME short course titled “Control the Feed, Control the Mill.” More than 50 individuals at-tended the short course.

Despite limited discussion, Chemistry of Flotation is a good text and reference 1985 by M. C. Fuerstenau, J. D. Miller, and M. C. Kuhn Society of Mining Engineers Caller No. D Littleton, CO 80127 Softcover, $23.50 (member), $18.50 (student member), $28.50 (list) Review by Richard R. Klimpel Chemistry in Flotation, as stated by the authors, is intended as a textbook for students as well as a reference book for practicing flotation engineers. It covers subject matter related to surface phenomena; collectors and collector salts; natural floatability; the flotation of sulfide minerals, insoluble oxide and silicate minerals, semisoluble salts, and soluble salts; and slime coatings. There are no discussions in the book on practical plant implications of flotation chemistry, such as the influence of rate, particle size effects, dosage, flotation equipment, and methods of chemical addition. The book itself is small (only 177 pages), and, as published, is in an easy-to-handle soft cover. Once one accepts the intent of the authors, this book really does represent a very concise and convenient summary of the chemistry of flotation. It is, however, far from complete in its discussion of concepts and implications of data. Very often in the presentation, key prior knowledge (or at least subject matter awareness) not given in the book, is assumed. Thus, depending on one's familiarity with the specific subject matter, some sections can be easily followed while others could be tough going. Some of the discussion is so brief and terse on important subjects that unless the reader already realizes the meaning of the presentation, the conclusions to be drawn are not always clear. Therefore, if one is not expecting a self-contained primer on flotation chemistry, this book is very useful. To this end, the book is recommended to practitioners of flotation chemistry. The presentation of data in figures and tables is good. It helps considerably in the book achieving its conciseness. The authors certainly are qualified and knowledgeable in the subject matter - apparent in the style of presentation. In summary, this reviewer thoroughly enjoyed this book and will use it as a concise review of flotation chemistry. Richard R. Accurate definitions are given without technical jargon, cross-references are included, and commonly used abbreviations are provided. Investigators there reported the latest discoveries, developments in commercial practice, and state-of-the-art reviews of scientific principles and applications of various technologies for handling, processing, and use of high sulfur coals. Growth for magnesium metal is expected in the motor industry for use as a possible substitute for aluminum. Some magnesium producers are altering their marketing strategies to cultivate this market. This study also includes a review of the worldwide magnesium industry, its end uses and consumption, and international trade and price trends.

Extensive exploration has resulted in delineation of a massive sulfide district on the north flank of the east-central Alaska range. The district covers approximately 400 square miles and contains numerous stratiform; transported and some replacement type sulfide deposits ranging in size from less than 1 million tons to 20 million tons. Five types of ores were sampled for the study. Mineralogical analysis revealed that the minerals are too fine grained for conventional grinding and beneficiation. Hydrometallurgical studies were con-ducted using ferric chloride as a lixiviant. Ore microscopic studies as well as electron microprobe analyses of minerals in the raw samples and leach residues explained the low recoveries for certain elements as well as sources of impurities that need to be eliminated from the process streams.

The future of the world's minerals industries is often painted as bleak. Peter Drucker has repeatedly proposed that the demand for minerals has become "uncoupled" from world economic growth.' This implies that, while mineral demand was in the past linked to the growing demand for and consumption of goods and services, further world development will not require substantial mineral inputs. Lester Thurow noted that for these reasons the US minerals industry is diminishing in scale and economic importance.2 There is some documented evidence of such uncoupling, and the demand for minerals may indeed diminish in the future. But such announcements are, to this point, no more than speculation. For instance, is it not just as likely that renewed environmental concerns will cause increased demand for the relatively innocuous environmental properties of metals, replacing plastics? And even if the prophesied demand decreases do occur, a sufficient fall in metal prices due to technological advances could increase the quantity of minerals demanded above current levels, in spite of leftward shifting demand curves. Thus, worldwide mineral production activity may increase or decrease in the future and no one can say whether more or fewer of the earth's citizens will become involved in the extraction and processing of minerals.

Road tunnels in recent infrastructure projects in Sydney, Australia, are designed to have a fire resistance level of either a 4-hour cellulosic fire or a 2-hour hydrocarbon fire. Where permanent ground support for tunnels consists of systematic rock bolts and relatively thin layer of shotcrete, it is important to ensure that during and after the fire event the ground support is designed/predicted not to pose risks to the tunnel occupant. The global behavior of the ground support can be predicted using finite element analysis, and its resistance is derived with consideration of the material strength degradation due to the elevated temperature.
